Abbotsford Police say they are pleased with a new tactic they have used to alleviate gang-related violence and murders in the community. The gang suppression unit (GSU), which formed a year ago, has been deemed a success, said Const. Ian MacDonald. He said one only has to look at some prominent statistics that plagued Abbotsford in the two years prior to the GSU. The community was dubbed the “murder capital of Canada” in 2009 and 2010, based on having had six homicides in 2008 and 11 the following year. For the first time, 60 per cent of households will receive a letter replacing the traditional paper questionnaire. This letter will provide information to allow respondents to complete the questionnaire online. It will also contain a toll-free number respondents can call to request a paper questionnaire if preferred. Imprisoned for assaulting three girls Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Abbotsford Police have issued a public warning about the release of a convicted sex offender. James Douglas Campbell, 60, is scheduled for statutory release on Wednesday, after having served his third federal sentence, and is expected to reside in Abbotsford. His 90-year-old wife lives in the community. Campbell’s criminal history includes sexual assault, theft, break-andenter, forgery and illegal possession of a firearm. He is completing a 24-year sentence for sexual offences against three girls – ages 12, nine and seven.

He abducted one of the girls while she was walking to school. Police first issued a warning about Campbell a year ago when he was granted unescorted temporary absences (UTA) from prison. His case management team opposed the UTAs, saying that Campbell had not been fully compliant with some requirements of the Sex Offender Maintenance Programming. Campbell used the passes to visit his wife, which caused concern among neighbours, said Const. Ian MacDonald. “They became quite vigilant in observing him and being mindful of where he was and where their

children were in the neighbourhood,” he said. One of the conditions of his UTAs was that he abstain from alcohol. The Parole Board of Canada (PBC) found that he breached that condition last September, and his UTAs were revoked. The PBC said his alcohol consumption was “indicative of an increase in (his) risk to public safety.” MacDonald said there have been some indications that Campbell and his wife may move from Abbotsford, but anyone who observes him breaching the conditions of his release should notify police. Not guilty pleas were entered by two men facing seconddegree murder charges for an incident that took place in west Abbotsford in 2008. Shavinder “Shevy” Brar, 24, and Amrit Gill, 23, appeared in Chilliwack Supreme Court on Monday morning for the stabbing murder of Harmin “Harvey” Hans, who was 18 at the time. On May 24, 2008 at 2:20 a.m., police were called to Hans’ home on Ridgeview Drive after hearing of a fight between a group of IndoCanadian men in front of the house. Officers arrived to find Hans lying on the lawn with a stab wound to his neck. Shortly after Hans’ death, police investigators expressed their frustration at a “lack of co-operation” from a group of young people – and their parents – whom they believed could assist with their inquiries. Following a threemonth investigation, members of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team arrested the two men. Hans, who was known to police, was a student at Rick Hansen Secondary. The case is currently in its preliminary stages. The trial starts on June 6.

Mel Gerling made his first appearance yesterday in Abbotsford provincial court, with co-accused Damara English and Patrick English, his former business partners. The three have been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC) with causing unnecesssary pain/suffering to an animal, and under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act with causing an animal to continue to be in distress. Back in Japan helping with relief efforts

An Abbotsford man who was living in Japan at the time of the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 10, and then

came home for a few weeks, has returned to the nation to help with relief efforts. Mike Luzia arrived Sunday (May 1) in Onagawa, Japan – a small fishing village

that was one of the hardest hit areas – to resume his teaching job and find out what help is needed. Mike lived in Onagawa for two and a half years and lost his

apartment there – and everything in it – when the tsunami swept through the village of about 10,000. He had been teaching English four days a week in Onagawa and one day

While in Abbotsford, he raised about $5,000 from friends and family to help with whatever immediate needs he discovers in Japan. Another purpose for Mike’s trip is to inform supporters of the needs in Onagawa. The village of Steveston in Richmond has adopted

living at the school in Onagawa. Before heading there, he spent some time in China with his girlfriend, Hui Wen Shi, and her family. Shi, who was attending university in Japan, was in Mike’s apartment at the time of the tsunami and escaped to high ground as the water swept over the village.

Forum on mental illness A free public forum on mental illness and substance use takes place Wednesday, May 11 at Sevenoaks Alliance Church (2575 Gladwin Rd.) in Abbotsford. The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and is hosted by the Abbotsford Mental Health and Addiction Advisory Council (AMHAAC). This year’s event features personal stories from people who have lived with mental illness and/or substance

use, as well as from their family members. Facilitator is Mark Goheen, a clinical specialist with Fraser Health’s clinical specialist in mental health and substance use services. More power, less power The NDP’s MPs – all 102 of them – are in a uniquely odd position. They’ve just experienced the biggest election in party history, propelling them to ofﬁcial Opposition status. Yet while the party’s popularity has grown steadily under Jack Layton, translating into more seats each election (19 in 2004, 29 in 2006 and 37 in 2008), the culmination of that steady increase in numbers – last week’s 102seat performance (more than doubling the party’s record of 43 under Ed Broadbent in 1988, which is, ironically, also the last time the Conservatives won a majority) – corresponds with a sudden and remarkable drop in inﬂuence. With the Conservatives winning a 167-seat majority, due to the collapse of the Liberals (34 seats, down from 77) and Bloc Quebecois (four seats, down from 49), the impact of the NDP accomplishment is counter-intuitive. The NDP’s growing power leaves it

with less power. Layton can put whatever rosy spin on it he chooses, but his party held the balance of power for much of the last decade, since 2004’s Liberal minority, and will now find swaying the Tories to compromise on key policy issues markedly more difficult. As Layton moves into Stornoway, the residence of the leader of the official Opposition, and the euphoria of the May 2 historic results subsides, he and his party must prepare themselves for four years of increasing frustration. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has pledged a commitment to work ‘with’ the opposition, but there’s only one reason political parties hunger for a majority – to push their own legislative agenda through Parliament without having to worry about compromising policies and principles to earn a minority party’s support. This is our new political landscape. – Black Press

Other Hand It became patently clear Monday morning that one should always attempt to solve the problem before trying to repair its result. Having spent much of Sunday neatly spreading and smoothing soil along the mole and mouse paths that had turned my lawn into a network of mini-canyons over a winter of neglect, dismay (followed by a litany of words unsuitable for a family newspaper) greeted my walk to the gate for the morning newspapers. The Mole was back, with a vengeance! If I thought it had the mental capacity, I’d swear it was laughing at me while rooting up the ground. On the other hand, the indignity of it all has spurred retribution, or at least a temporary cure to the problem. Mr./ Ms. Mole will soon be dispatched. And

so few decent days to make up the time wasted. Like last weekend, when I backed the truck and trailer behind the barn to pick up a load of branches from a downed tree. Took me 15 minutes to load up, and three hours to winch the truck out of the mud. And it was so cold, that on the third of May I had to order more oil for the furnace that gets worse ‘mileage’ than my pickup truck. On April 28 it snowed, and this weekend, in cleaning up the yard, I discovered that our banana trees, which I swear produced bananas last year, melted to nothing in the frigid weather this winter. The magnolia is only now beginning to ﬂower, at least six weeks late, and the garden that is usually planted is a mass of weeds embedded in soil that would swamp the rototiller. The horses are still on hay and the cows are still on ‘winter vacation,’ because the ﬁeld grass, unlike that of the lawn, continues with its reluctance to recognize that spring, according to the calendar, has sprung. Even the ducks who show up every

year to mooch grain don’t appear to have nested yet, and the swallows must be starving for lack of ﬂying insects. But up north it seems, from a European perspective, things are positively balmy. The prognosticators are predicting that the ice melt in the Arctic is

Years ago I’m certain stuff froze, or wouldn’t ever grow here, and I’m also sure that at other times you could grow bananas in B.C. Climate changes, ice ages come, warming trends cycle through. Flooding, frost, hot, cold – it’s all been here before, and will continue so long as the Earth turns. Yes, carbon emissions created by our thirst for consumer goods and luxury are contributing to the speed of change, but try as we might, real change is out of our control. The only difference is that today we have the ability to communicate our concerns, though no more real ability to manipulate inevitable change than there was in the time of cave dwellers, mammoths or dinosaurs. Which means of course that, try as I might, whacking the mole is only an interim and brief solution to keeping my, and the world’s, garden neat and tidy.

letters Fewer gov’t controversies When most look at Parliament, they attribute the unprofessional behaviour of MPs and the major pitfalls between political parties a result of minority parliaments – I think otherwise. Since 2004, minority governments have exposed Canadians to the many antiquated and ill-defined aspects of Canada’s Parliament. Simply put, Parliament has not developed to meet the needs of the 21st century. Its inability to deal with documents on Afghan detainees, continuous debates over access to information, and the rights of cabinet demonstrate the many weak aspects of Canada’s democratic system. Over the next four years many of the controversies Canadians have witnessed in the

last few parliaments will most likely disappear. With a majority government, Prime Minister Harper will not have to depend upon other parties to support his legislation nor will he be subject to Parliament making decisions which he does not agree with. Although another minority government may be years away, the same problems that plagued our democracy since 2004 will re-emerge and Canadians will once again wonder why politicians in Ottawa have such a hard time getting along and getting things done. For now, however, we can be confident that Harper will rule his party and avoid all the unnecessary bickering that comes along with minority parliaments. I am afraid that as

in government’s past, this majority will simply hide the many aspects of Parliament that need fixing by a very powerful prime minister, as was the case with Jean Chretien. People in Abbotsford once supported a movement and party that called for reform. The Reform Party wanted individual MPs to use their conscience and make decisions that best reflected the de-

sires and well-being of their constituents. Although MPs will claim they still do this, the reality is the buck most often stops with the prime minister and the other party leaders The people of Abbotsford, however, have hope. All-new Ford Focus Sharpens Dynamic Driving with Available SE Sport, Titanium Handling Packages The all-new Ford Focus will take dynamic driving to new levels with optionally available handling packages on SE and range-topping Titanium model. Driving dynamics and responsive handling have been elevated across the entire all-new Focus range for 2012. All Focus models feature standard specifically tuned electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system, independent Control Blade rear suspension and torque vectoring control. These features combine to make Focus more agile and confidence-inspiring for enthusiast and normal drivers alike. “Our enthusiast customers told us exactly what they want in an all-new Focus,” said Mark Rushbrook, Ford vehicle dynamics manager for the 2012 Ford Focus. “They asked us to give Focus more responsive handling, and they asked that we develop and offer a factory-engineered handling package with beefier suspension hardware.We’ve done just that, fine-tuning a pair of available packages for mid-level SE and up-range Titanium models.”

Two additional wheel packages are offered with the Focus SE Sport Package. A 16-inch machined alloy wheel with painted pockets is offered as an upgrade, while serious enthusiasts may wish to add the 17-inch machined and painted alloy wheel option. Abby rugby women win big in B.C. semis

Head coaches are generally their own team’s harshest critics, but Abbotsford Rugby Football Club women’s bench boss Dave Chambers couldn’t find a single flaw with his side’s performance on Saturday. The Abby women’s dominance was comprehensive as they rolled over the Brit Lions 44-5 in the provincial Division 1 semifinals at Exhibition Park. “From my point of view, they did everything right that a coach could ask for,” Chambers enthused. “We had good control of the contact points, and as a result we were able to move the ball and put ourselves on the front foot as we attacked. Our defence was really good also.” That six different players scored tries was evidence of the Abbotsford side’s crisp ball movement. Alicia Noger and Jerusha Dunsmore notched two apiece, while Jen Ross, Megan Hamm, Steph McLean and Elyssa Phillipson added singles. The Abby women, the defending B.C. champs, had finished atop the Div. 1 regular season standings at 7-1, but the Lions were the team that had handed them the lone defeat. “They tended to play a very tight game, with a lot of one-off runners from rucks,” Chambers said, reflecting on that loss. “Over the ensuing weeks, we worked very hard to be able to stop that, and to be able to produce our own balls so we could move it.” Abbotsford moves on to face Kamloops in the B.C. final on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Brockton Oval in Vancouver. “That’ll be a tough, tough game,” Chambers predicted. “They’re very athletic, and they like to move the ball as well.”

The early portion of the B.C. Premier Baseball League season hasn't been kind to the Abbotsford Cardinals, but an offensive explosion on Sunday afternoon offered a ray of hope. The Coquitlam Reds won the front half of the doubleheader at DeLair Park 3-2 in extra innings, but the Cards battered the Reds' pitching staff in a 13-2 blowout in the back half. The game ended after five innings via the mercy rule, and the offensive outburst represented more than a quarter of the 44 runs the Cards have scored to this point of the season. Abby catcher Tyler Krahn had a big game from the leadoff spot, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs. Brandon Todoruk drove in three runs, while Matt Buse and Steven Federau also had multi-hit outings. The victory also featured a terrific pitching performance from Abby starter Brand Molnar, who no-hit the Reds over five innings, but surrendered a pair of unearned runs after his teammates committed four errors. "The boys have been battling hard lately, and there were signs in the first game that things were coming around – we just couldn't punch one through when we needed to,” noted Cards coach Andy Rempel, whose team now sits at 5-10 on the year. “The second game, it just seemed like things came together. "We obviously had a bad start to the year, but if we keep working hard the way we have, we'll get to .500 and we'll get past that."

Abbotsford wrestler Chanmit Phulka staged a breakthrough on the international stage on Saturday, grappling his way to a gold medal at the Resita International Junior Championships in Romania. The Resita event is considered one of Europe's top tournaments, and featured athletes from 14 European nations. Phulka, a 19-year-old Rick Hansen Secondary grad, earned a spot on the Canadian junior national team by virtue of his gold medal at the Canadian junior championships in Edmonton in March. He defeated opponents from Italy, Bulgaria and Germany en route to the 96 kg final, where he defeated another Bulgarian athlete to clinch the gold. In the title match, Phulka dropped the first round 1-0, but battled back to win the next two 6-1 and 1-0. "It's outstanding," marveled Sucha Mann, Phulka's longtime coach with the Miri Piri Wrestling Club. "He's doing so well at the international level. I couldn't believe, as a coach, that he beat all those top guys." Phulka's next stop is Ankara, Turkey, where he'll participate in another international tourney with Team Canada this weekend.

A gritty performance from Jordan Hernandez boosted the Valley Rebels to a 9-8 victory over the Royal City Capitals in their home opener on Friday at MSA Arena. Hernandez, the captain of the local senior B lacrosse squad, was playing through a torn hamstring, but that didn’t stop him from scoring the game-winning goal in the third period. “That’s what a captain does, I guess,” Rebels coach Jim Nishiyama marveled. “He just kept plugging along, and as the game wore on, the hamstring got worse. But he stayed in there.” Hernandez, who finished with a goal and four assists, tracked down a loose ball and whipped a low shot home to snap an 8-8 tie. The Fraser Valley Volleyball Club cleaned up at the provincial U15-U16 club championships, held at Tradex on the weekend. The FVVC Blue U15 boys team won gold, rallying to beat Eagles Volleyball Club of Surrey (20-25, 25-15, 25-12) in the Div. 1 final. Tim Edge was named tourney MVP, while Jake Hagan and Michael Hsu were all-stars. Two other FVVC teams also climbed the podium at provincials, which brought together 129 teams and over 1,000 athletes from across B.C. In the U16 boys division, FVVC Blue took bronze, with Ben Lieuwen earning an all-star nod. FVVC Tim finished third in the U16 girls Div. 1 Tier 1 event, with Rachel Windhorst picking up an all-star award. The Mission Wildcats U16 girls squad won a gold medal in the Div. 2 Tier 1 draw.
