Pushed to the limit The third annual 3 Alarm Adventure Race on Sunday attracted 26 teams: 14 competitive, eight recreational and four high school. The race was divided into three parts, the forest loop, taking place at Clearbrook Park and Downes Bowl, involved mountain biking and orienteering; the water loop at Mill Lake featured paddling canoes across the lake; while the field loop at Matsqui Recreation Centre, consisted of swimming as well as on-ice tobogganing and target shooting using hockey sticks. Participants also had to compete in two of three firefighting events including pushing a fire truck, an obstacle course while wearing full firefighter gear, or water hose target shooting. In the competitive division, Pro Motion Physiotherapy took first place with a time of three hours and 45 minutes. In the recreation category, the Chiefs and Chiefettes (made up of local firefighters) won in a time of 3:58 while W.J. Mouat took the high school title in a time of 3:57. While figures have yet to be finalized, organizers estimate $10,000 was raised for the Abbotsford Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.

A local couple now living in Slave Lake, Alta. are among the 7,000 people who had to flee the community after wildfires ravaged the area. Barrie Alden of Abbotsford said his daughter, Denise, and her husband, Masato Deguchi, have left their home with their two young boys, ages one and three. Alden has been unable to talk to the couple, but was relieved to see them on a TV news report that showed the lineup of vehicles leaving Slave Lake. The family was travelling in their trailer, en route to Edmonton. “I think they’re OK. They got out, but their house is a total loss, I think,” Alden said. Denise, who grew up in Mission, and Masato, from
Aldergrove, moved to Slave Lake about a year ago. Masato is a bank manager and was transferred there from his previous job in Nelson, B.C. Alden said they lived in a subdivision on the outskirts of Slave Lake. “She (Denise) tried to get me to move to Slave Lake, but I said, ‘I’m not going up there.’ The winters are too cold, and I live in fear of forest fires,” he said. The couple could not be reached for comment on their cellphone. The entire town and surrounding areas were evacuated Sunday after wildfires quickly spread due to gusting winds of up to 100 km/h. As of press deadline yesterday afternoon, one-third of the town had been destroyed or damaged, according to police.

Lorissa Arndt of Communitas was one of the leaders of a flashmob group that took over a portion of Sevenoaks Shopping Centre and was “dancing out crazy” on Saturday at 1:30. A flashmob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire. This flashmob was done for charity, and included members of the Abbotsford Police Department, Board of Education, Mission Parks/Rec and many more. The dancers all paid $5, and $475 was donated to Communitas.

The tale of a boy who fell from a fourthstorey window of an Abbotsford apartment building on Saturday afternoon has a “happy ending, bordering on a miracle, said Const. Ian MacDonald. The day after the accident, the eightyear-old was recovering from bruises and some minor damage to his spleen. He did not suffer any broken bones, despite initial beliefs that he had. MacDonald said, as of Monday morning, the boy was still in the hospital but was likely to be released later that day. “He was watching TV and was eating and was anxious to get out of hospital, he said of the last update he received on the boy’s

An Abbotsford man was sentenced Friday in Seattle to a 10-year federal prison sentence for possessing $7 million worth of cocaine that was intended to be smuggled from Washington State into Canada. Curtis McLay previously pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute. A charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine was dismissed. He and a woman, Leah Norton, were arrested on Dec. 6, 2010 outside of a Bellingham restaurant, where investigators searched a truck driven by McLay. Found inside the vehicle were 184 kilogramsized bricks of cocaine, camouflage face paint, knives, pepper spray, walkie-talkies, global positioning systems and camouflage clothing. The cocaine seizure was considered to be one of the largest made by federal agents patrolling the U.S.-Canada border in the western district of Washington. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had found two abandoned jet skis in Hale Passage,
an area known for the smuggling of drugs and other contraband, on the day before and the day of the arrests. One of them had been purchased by McLay two weeks earlier. According to sentencing documents, Norton told investigators that McLay and another person had entered the U.S. at night on two jet skis with intentions to pick up the cocaine – which had been transported from California – at a cottage on Lummi Island. Their plan was to transport the drugs back to Canada. However, Norton said the plan was abandoned when one of the jets skis began taking on water. The new scheme involved Norton driving the drugs to a rural area near the border, where someone would cross, pick up the cocaine and take it back to Canada. She said McLay was to follow her in another vehicle. The arrests occurred before the plan could be executed. McLay, who has seven previous criminal convictions in Canada which were not listed on the

However, he was wearing two military dog tags – one imprinted with his name, ID number and blood type and the other with his lawyer’s name and phone number.

McLay was sentenced to the mandatory minimum term. Because his prior convictions occurred in Canada, they could not be considered in the sentencing. If they had taken place in the U.S., McLay would have received a term of 17.5 to 22 years. Norton pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to distribute cocaine and will be sentenced on May 27.

Less toxic environs It looks as if B.C. will soon get a ban on cosmetic pesticides. On Thursday, newly-minted NDP leader Adrian Dix proposed legislation to ban the use of cosmetic pesticides across the province, then challenged Premier Christy Clark to take action. Clark, the new BC Liberal leader, says she has supported a ban for years and wants to work with the opposition and the public to work out the best way to further restrict the use of lawn and garden weed killers. If the two leaders can work together to pass a bill it would be a promising sign that bi-partisan co-operation is possible in a forum more noted for rancorous debate. We are not sure how much there is to study. The dumping of toxic chemicals on such weeds as dandelions and chickweed is unnecessary. Why should those who don’t weed by hand endanger others by creating a toxic environment? The province can look to such cities
as White Rock, which has had a pesticide ban in place since July 2008; and Surrey, which first enacted a bylaw in 2010, and further strengthened it last January. The bylaws came about in part from pressure from the people in various communities. In the case of Richmond – which has had a cosmetic pesticides bylaw since 2009 – the Richmond Pesticide Awareness Coalition was formed by concerned citizens, some of whom had actually been sprayed by weedicidal maniacs. The message is being heard, and B.C. appears set to join Ontario and Quebec with province-wide bans More than 20 cities throughout B.C. have already banned cosmetic pesticide use. But for such a ban to be effective, it needs to be province-wide, so people can’t buy their dandelion death juice from a neighbouring municipality. Here’s to a less toxic environment, both in the legislature and on our lawns. – Black Press

Rushton On the
Other Hand There are occasions when one must reluctantly admit that he may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer. Last week, unfortunately, seemed filled with those events, and try as I might it wasn’t even possible to place the blame on mental decrepitude brought on by advancing age. In one of the unceasing torrential downpours that are plaguing us lately, I was driving home along the new and not quite completed Whatcom Connector when, the wipers struggling to beat back the flow, something lodged beneath the blade on the driver’s side. That caused a huge streak to form directly across my line of vision, requiring remediation if I was to continue to drive safely. Since rain was thrashing down, and having previously solved the problem, I did what I normally do while continuing
to drive: wait until the wiper reaches its apex, shoot my arm out the side window, momentarily flick the blade off the windshield and dislodge the offending piece of crud. Now, I happen to wear my wristwatch with the face on the inside of my wrist, a quirky habit that, among other things, allows me to surreptitiously glance at the time during long meetings or other events where I’d rather not be any longer than necessary. Coincidentally, as I shot my arm out the window I drove over one of the humps in the road that shield the manhole covers until the final coat of asphalt is laid on the new road. The resulting thump caused my wrist to catch against the side window frame, tearing off the watch and sending it a graceful arc onto the roadway. Since the watch has considerable value, I quickly stopped and ran back to locate it, horrified as a number of cars following me were driving right where I thought the watch had landed. And there it was, looking like road kill, the bracelet in one location, and watch itself further down the road, displaying evidence that both had been driven over. At a gap in traffic I ran out and gathered
up the pieces, bruised though relatively intact. The watch, as a commercial for another timepiece once said, “though taken a licking, kept on ticking.” The next day, parts in hand, my favorite watch repairman in Sevenoaks gave me a grim look, observed with veiled admon-
And there it was, looking like road kill, the bracelet in one location, and watch itself further down the road... ishment that substantial repairs were in order and leaving me with the impression that rehabilitation would an expensive affair. Three days later the watch was back on my wrist, bearing scars but performing perfectly – the bill a mere $15! On my way home with unspent cash in my pocket, I stopped by a pet shop to buy my pup two new squeaky toys. Thus discovery number two of dumb things not to do. Don’t get puppies excited
right after they’ve eaten. The pup, as usual, hoovered his food. Then as a treat I tossed him his new toys. It was rather cute watching him haul and maul each one, squeaking the guts out of them. A few minutes later he came up to me wagging his tail, all sparkly-eyed and happy, and hiccupping like crazy. Thinking (wrong word) he’d just overdone the speed of his food intake and that he needed a little more time to digest it, I spoke some silly dog-talk, patted his head and continued reading the book I was engrossed in. Five minutes later, there on the hardwood, was his dinner. Apparently not finished with (or understanding) my lapses in mental acuity, a couple of days later I decided to show off said pup at the office. Much to my horror, embarrassment and lengthy assertions that he never does it in the house, he again chose to evacuate, though this time the food had been amply processed. I wish I could say I’ve learned a lesson or two, but knowing myself, and human nature, I know no matter how smart you think you are, you’ll eventually do something stupid again, and again and ...

letters Government will adjust HST to make it palatable
On Tuesday evening I had the opportunity to take part in the HST town hall phone conference, along with 24,000 other Valley residents. I found it interesting and informative. The technology blew me away, and it all seemed to work very well. I had no prior knowledge of Minister Falcon other than seeing him the odd time on TV, and was most impressed by his grasp of the subject matter and his patience and courtesy in taking the calls.
He was quick to admit that the government had made an error in the way they introduced the tax with so little discussion with the public, and frank in admitting that there was a cost to the average
family to having the HST. On the whole, I think the government is doing their best to handle a difficult situation, and they will do their utmost to adjust the tax to make it as palatable
as possible, while still paying the province’s bills.

the money for the federal grant repayment and the cost of
instituting the new tax regime? Carol Ebenstiner
Unfair to cut discounts The proposal by ICBC to cut discounts is unfair and overreaching, and could lead to a number of unintended consequences for the taxpayers of B.C. It is hard to know exactly what the cost would be, as it depends on the level of coverage and the existing discount rate held by the ticket recipient. However, assuming a “lost” five per cent discount for each of three years, and an undiscounted insurance premium of $3,000, that ticket would end up costing an additional $150 for each of three years, on top of the “base” fine of (say) $138 and more. So, a one-time ticket, which could have been unusual and out of driving character, could end up costing a long time “good” driver $588 (3 x $150 plus $138) and more. That means that there would then be a very strong incentive to challenge every single ticket, whether validly issued or not. This proposal is both unfair, overreaching, and, in the end, could cost far more than it generates. Let’s hope that ICBC reconsiders or that the regulator reigns them in. Ian MacLeod

The next generation of Canadian volleyball stars was on display in Abbotsford on the weekend, as the city played host to the Canadian Open U17U18 Championships. The numbers associated with the tournament were simply staggering. The event brought together 227 teams from coast to coast, and approximately 4,000 athletes, coaches and staff. The tourney utilized 31 courts at six different venues around the city, with Tradex serving as the nerve centre. It was wall-to-wall volleyball at the exhibition centre, with 19 courts running simultaneously. Abbotsford native Tyler Koslowsky, who played for the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club (FVVC) U18 Blue squad, marveled at the atmosphere. “I’ve never been to a

Local teams acquitted themselves well, producing a series of solid results. The FVVC, a regional program linked to Trinity Western University, saw a trio of teams go on deep runs.
The FVVC Blue under-17 boys team won bronze in the Tier 1 draw, defeating 204 Volleyball Club of Winnipeg in a threeset thriller (25-15, 23-25, 15-9). The team featured a quartet of Abbotsford athletes – Jeremy Lieuwen, Angelo Alvarado and Zach Funk of Mennonite

The FVVC Blue U18 boys fell just short of the Tier 1 podium, dropping a straight-sets decision to Northern Alberta Volleyball Club of Edmonton in the third-place game (25-22, 25-20). MEI’s Koslowsky, Connor Nickel and Dillon Peters were part of that team. The FVVC Blitz, featuring Yale setter Emilia Amiama, won the U17 girls Div. 1 Tier 2 final, beating a team from Lac-Megantic, Que. (26-24, 25-23). The Columbia Volleyball Club Airwalkers made a run to the Div. 1, Tier 2 semifinals, where they fell to the NAVC Gold Pandas. Local players on the squad include MEI’s Sadie Ball, Jill Ratzlaff, Jessica Braaksma and Sharaya Schulte, and Mouat’s Reena Randhawa.

Serenity isn’t usually a term associated with the rough-andtumble sport of rugby. But that’s precisely the word longtime Abbotsford women’s rugby standout Jen Ross chose to describe her team’s 29-10 victory over Kamloops in the provincial Division 1 championship game on Saturday. The Abby women fell behind early, but maintained their composure and blew away Kamloops in the second half. “We maintained some sort of serenity,” explained Ross, who plays standoff for the Abby club. “We were pretty confident that eventually everything would click, and we were able to get the ball moving up the field and expose some of the holes.” After a slow start at Vancouver’s Brockton Oval, the Abbotsford side scored two

New Special Edition model adds popular features to CR-V LX The 2011 Honda CR-V provides a versatile and accommodating crossover SUV package with space for up to five passengers and a versatile cargo area for utility. The CR-V also provides fuel economy and refined, comfortable handling similar to a mid-size sedan. A new model for 2011, the CR-V SE (Special Edition), adds to the standard features of the CR-V LX with alloy wheels (replaces styled-steel wheels), a 160-watt AM/FM/6disc changer with six speakers (up from a single-disc CD and four speakers), steering wheel-mounted audio controls and rear privacy glass. The previous, 2010 model-year CR-V received a wide range of enhancements including sharpened styling, additional features on certain trim levels, higher fuel economy ratings, and increased power. The CR-V’s interior emphasizes functionality and style. The front row storage areas are designed to accommodate items such as a handbag between the seats. For comfort, there are driver’s and front passenger’s center-folding armrests. A center console replaces the retractable center tray table on the CR-V EX-L with navigation. Standard safety equipment includes: the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle. Additional standard equipment includes side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; front side airbags with a passenger-side

Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); active front seat head restraints; an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist; and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The CR-V’s unit-body construction makes extensive use of high-strength steel (58 percent) to save weight and create a high-rigidity body structure, which significantly contributes to the vehicle’s ride quality, fuel efficiency and safety performance. The suspension is comprised of a front MacPherson strut layout and a rear multi-link suspension. The high-rigidity body and independent suspension offer a comfortable and engaging driving experience for a crossover SUV. State-of-the art noise absorption materials help to reduce engine and road noise for a quieter cabin. The CR-V comes standard with an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission that uses an active lockup torque converter. Wide overall ratios help maximize acceleration in gears one through four and optimize fuel economy in its overdrive fifth gear. Grade Logic Control helps to reduce gear “hunting” on hilly roads. The available Real Time™ 4WD system - ideal for enhanced traction on snow, rain, dirt roads and sandy conditions - sends power to the rear wheels automatically when needed. Real Time 4WD’s always-ready and fully automatic dual-pump system hydraulically proportions rearwheel torque via multi-plate clutches.

The chance to win fortune, fame and bragging rights has returned with The Intern 2. Those are just a few rewards that 20 local University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) students are competing for with the return of the biggest reality contest from The Abbotsford News. One student will win the grand prize of $5,000 cash, the title of Intern of the Year and a summer internship with the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) marketing department. “The Intern 2 provides students with real life experience within an organization of great significance in the city”, said Andrew Franklin, Publisher of The News. And like most great reality contests, you’re the boss.
THE CHALLENGE: Twenty UFV students will be divided into 10 teams. Each team is associated with a corporate partner in the community. Their task is to create a marketing plan for the business with the specific goal of reaching the 18-to-35-year-old demographic in Abbotsford. They will create a video to be showcased at abbynews.com, a full-page advertisement to be run in The Abbotsford News Daily and exploring opportunities in social media. There will also be a mini-task of promoting an event for AESC. The objective is to be the last team and finally the last individual in the running.
(Click on the Intern banner ad located in entertainment), and as often as desired with original print ballots from the Abbotsford News. However, every contestant has immunity for the first four weeks. The News will track the weekly votes and announce them via Twitter every Tuesday at 8 a.m. at twitter.com/abbynews. On Monday, June 7 there will be a mass elimination of seven teams. Voting for the remaining three teams will continue until Monday, June 14.
THE FINALE: Three last teams will be invited to the grand finale at Finnegan’s Pub on Monday, June 20. In a boardroom setting, the judges will take into consideration the votes, the teamwork, the project and the sponsor evaluations. In addition, each contestant will provide an individual pitch as to why he or she should be the Intern of the Year. There, the winner will be announced and presented with the prize.
FACEBOOK: Each contestant will have their own Facebook page, accessible by visiting The Abbotsford News Facebook site at facebook.com/myabbynews. From there, voters can link to each competitor’s page or link to The Intern fan page. Keep an eye out for other platforms used by interns to win votes.
WHY VOTE? THE ELIMINATION:
E M E R T X E
T R E L A T TALEN
Starting today, readers will have the daily opportunity to fire two teams based on a list of questions and answers completed by the competitors, their full-page advertisement and their video. Votes can be entered five times a day, per IP address, at abbynews.com.
WHY VOTE?
The contest is based on your votes, which is why we are awarding a grand prize for one person. Following a draw, the winner will receive a trip for two to Victoria, BC. Airfare courtesy of Island Express. You can vote in two ways: online at abbynews.com, or with the paper ballot in the newspaper.
You could win a trip for 2 to Victoria!

An experience with benefits Contest benefits According to Leslie Courchesne, director of marketing and communications at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), taking part in The Intern 2 will benefit all of the students in the contest – not just the winner. The tasks that students are given to impress local businesses, along with their short deadlines, will teach them the immediate value of their efforts, said Courchesne. “Competing in this contest is an excellent experience for UFV students. It challenges them to excel, to stand out and to really show their stuff... It will help them build connections with local businesses and gain new skills and confidence from the experience.” And when the students return in the fall, they will have a new perspective on what they are learning in the classroom,” added Courchesne. Being a part of the competition will also look like “gold” when featured on their
resumes when it’s time to enter the job market after graduation. Overall, the contest is showcasing the quality of UFV students. It’s also preparing the next generation of decision-makers and community leaders who will shape the future of the Fraser Valley, said Courchesne.
What will the Intern do? Working with Michaella Petrik, the director of marketing at the AESC, the intern will be assisting with the promotion of numerous upcoming shows. They’ll be doing everything from the grassroutes stages of marketing, like handing out flyers, to dabbling in show marketing and working with local media, said Michaella. The Intern will be helping with items such as press releases, and promoting the venue through different avenues, such as working with social media. “This is absolutely a great opportunity for students,” said Petrik. “They get to have some real life experience in
AESC experience Seeing first-hand how to run a large event, and what it takes to bring a high-calibre show to the Fraser Valley are a couple of the things the Intern of the Year will get to experience, said Jason Blumenfeld, general manager of the AESC. “A lot of people start as interns,” he said, adding that he was once an intern himself. Some of the skills that the intern will take away from the experience and be able to apply elsewhere, include brainstorming, organization, creating time lines and dealing with budgets.
venue marketing before they hit the real world.” Many students don’t typically get to have real life experience while in school, continued Petrik. “It will show that they took ownership and have tangible items for their resume to land a secure job when they graduate.” A lot of the skills can be carried over, she added. “Marketing relates to a lot of the things in your life. Even when it comes to trying to get a job – you’re promoting yourself... Even though marketing a show might be different from marketing a tube of toothpaste, you still want the same things: recognition, brand awareness and a sale.”

Facebook Etiquette 1 Don’t post things you wouldn’t want your boss or mother to see or read; show some class. 2 Don’t forget when you have co-workers as friends, calling in sick and then posting photos after a day at the beach is a no-no. Making fun of your boss – who you’ve friended – in your status line is an even bigger no-no. 3 Keep the relationship between you and your significant other private. Mushy love notes do not need to pop up on everyone’s wall. Likewise, if you’ve just been dumped, don’t post angry comments claiming your ex is evil.

We’re an interesting bunch. We’re tech savy, family centric, achievement oriented, team players and attention craving. But most of all – we’re plugged in. We’ve forgotten how to live without the internet. We were just kids when it exploded onto the scene. And like a child who has grown up learning to speak a foreign language, we’ve become fluent in technology. We’ve come to rely on high-speed connections, 3G wireless and smartphones. To us, the words Facebook, Twitter and Google are verbs. Everyone who’s anyone has a blog. Those old fashioned thank-you cards our parents made us send out have turned into instant
messages via our latest gadget. Instead of writing pen-pal letters, we video-chat our friends on the other side of the world using Skype. Born in the mid-1980’s and later, Generation Y is comprised of professionals in their mid-20s who are just entering the workforce. According to about.com, there’s approximately 70 million of us out there. Also known as the Millenials, we’re the fastest growing segment of today’s workforce. And we’re always teaching our parents – typically Gen X – how to do the same. (But we’ll probably chuckle as we do so. How could you not know how to Tweet, stream live video or upload photos to Facebook?) According to an article by
the National Center for Health Statistics, growing up in the age of technology has put a computer in the hand of almost every child. It’s given Gen Y such a strong understanding of technology that we’re able to keep up with its constant advances. “Three out of four teenagers are online, and 93 per cent of those aged 15-17 are computer users,” said the article. And according to an article entitled Managers Must Set Example for Gen Y Kidployees, we have a multitude of choices at our fingertips. “The wealth of information available in seconds from the Internet, hundreds of television stations to choose from and a different shopping centre every 10 miles has given Gen
Y members the notion that if they do not get what they want from one source, they can immediately go to another,” says the article. It goes on to say that this attitude transcends the workplace. Gen Y employees are more likely to question workplace regulations, such as uniform requirements and schedules, and know that there are other options out there if they are not satisfied with the answers. Generation Y holds a special knowledge and drive that employers want and are beginning to seek out. Just remember to keep your chuckling to yourself when your boss asks what RT means.

Lindsay Meloshinsky — Intern of the Year 2010 Since earning the fortune, fame and bragging rights associated with winning the first season of The Intern, Lindsay Meloshinsky has landed business contacts, gained confidence and widened her future opportunities. After being named Intern of the Year, Meloshinsky completed her 200-hour summer internship in the marketing department at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC). She stretched it out over the entire summer, working three days a week for eight hours. The psychology major, who recently switched from business, said she received many benefits from the experience. Not only was she offered a permanent job at the AESC as a marketing assistant, which she turned down to continue her degree, she also expanded her business contacts within the community. She still keeps in touch with her sponsor Lanka Jewels. Meloshinsky also gained more self assurance in her work abilities. “Now I feel more confident that when I finish my degree I can find work,” she said. “It’s not as intimidating as I thought it would be.” With her winnings, she’s hoping to do an exchange trip to Australia. “Overall, it was a great opportunity,” said Meloshinsky. WAARDENBURG James James (Jim) Waardenburg was born July 30, 1936 in Winterswyk, Netherlands. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and brother Albert when he was 17 years old joining his older brother Wayne and sister Rene. He married Phyllis Rolls in 1957 and they raised four children: Lawrence (Andrea), Debbie, Barry (Sharon), and Darryl (Joanne). Jim loved his family which also included grandchildren Brandon (Tiffany), Kyle, Pamela, Makayla, Kira, Bryanna, Dakota, and Wyatt and great grandchildren Isaiah and Jacob. Jim enjoyed working at the Royal Bank for 16 years (1953 to 1969) and being an active member in the dairy industry. He served on several boards - Director and President with the Fraser Valley Milk Producers Co-op Assn, Chairman of the BC Farm Debt Review Board, Director and President for Dairy Farmers of Canada, Vice-President of Dairyland, and President of the MSA Society of the Mentally Handicapped (now known as the MSA Society for Community Living). He has made many lasting friendships over the years. He was a proud owner and operator of the Waardenburg Brothers Dairy Farm in Matsqui from 1968 to 2000 along with brothers Wayne (Clara) and Albert (Ann). His nephews Paul Van Dokkumburg and Wesley Waardenburg later joined the operations until the farm retired in 2000. Jim loved camping and fishing with his family and friends. His favourite camping and fishing spot was in Powell River, BC. During retirement, in addition to RVing, he took a keen interest in gardening and worked in the yard keeping the gardens neat and tidy. Jim passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Centre after a courageous battle with lung cancer. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and brother-in-law, Pat Bolen, who gave exceptional care during his stay. This will ensure health sciences students have access to the most cutting-edge health technology available, and learn in a setting that simulates a health care working environment. “This funding will support the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for the new health sciences training facility we are building; an investment in the education of nurses and other health care professionals that will have both immediate and long-lasting benefits for us all,” said UFV president Mark Evered.

Team cycling for diversity A local group is cycling from Mission to Victoria, starting on Wednesday, May 18 to raise awareness about cultural diversity. The four-day 200-kilometre trip, called Cycling for Diversity, is led by Mission resident Ken Herar and includes stops in Mission, Abbotsford Langley, Surrey, New Westminster, Burnaby, Vancouver, Richmond and Victoria. The group will visit several elementary and high schools, participate in civic celebrations and meet with civic leaders. During the trek, Herar will ride a Devinci Oslo Hybrid road bike loaned
from Wentings Cycle and Mountain Shop in Mission. He hopes to raise funds to purchase the bike and donate it to someone in need. On the first day of the trip, the Cycling for Diversity team visits Griner Park in Mission at 8:15 a.m. for a diversity tree planting. The District of Mission has also declared May 16 to 21 as Cultural Diversity Week. Also on the first day, the team stops in Abbotsford to visit Dasmesh Punjabi School, W.J. Mouat Secondary and Howe Middle School. A second tree planting takes place at
2:30 p.m. at Old Yale Road and South Fraser Way. The next stops are at Safeway at 3:30 p.m. for an hour-long diversity celebration featuring Korean drummers and at 5 p.m. at the Sikh Temple on South Fraser Way. The group then makes its way to Langley, and concludes its trip in Victoria on May 21 at the legislature. An ongoing journal of the trip can be viewed on the Cycling for Diversity Facebook page. Donations for the bike Herar will be riding can be made at Envision Financial, account 4577128 (Mission branch). Interested riders are invited to contact Herar at 604-615-2499.

‘Sliders’ high on reno list By Maggie Calloway
Patio doors have come a long way from the aluminum sliders that once did little more than gain access to outside.
Once you have decided to invest in making your outdoor space more inviting, there is one item that should be right up there on your list. To make the transition from your interior to your new outdoor room, the choice of doors can make all the difference. Loewen is a well respected lead-

Kyle Exner of B.C. Greenhouse Builders suggests an 8’ by 8’ greenhouse for the starter gardener, but warns if you plan to add on in the future, you have to keep that in mind when placing your greenhouse. Martin Knowles photo
Garden room no longer a pipe dream Greenhouses are great yard additions, perfect for growing vegetables and other plants year-round. By Maggie Calloway Lurking deep in the heart of most gardeners is the dream of installing a beautiful greenhouse in the back garden. Many have visions of growing vegetables year-round, volumes of spring flowers and plants ready for planting, and a place to just generally
putter around even on those grey, drizzly days. Considering buying a greenhouse entails much the same decision-making process as home renovations. Just how are you going to use this new addition: are you really planning on becoming self-sustaining in the veggie department, are you dreaming of turning the back 40 into a mini botanical garden, or do you just enjoy growing your own vegetables and flowers from seed and want a place to protect delicate plants and shrubs though the winter? These are all important questions which need well-considered answers to avoid investing in a building which turns into an expensive white elephant.
Now that you have thought through why you want a greenhouse, you need to be realistic about your climate. Do you live in a spot subject to high winds or heavy snow? Let’s face it, life is not all sunshine and roses but sometimes long periods of ice and snow, which means your greenhouse needs to be able to withstand such extremes. One needs to consider these pesky details before taking the plunge. Kyle Exner, of B.C. Greenhouse Builders, is an expert who has very definite ideas on what it takes to pair the perfect greenhouse with the

Thinking of enjoying the benefits of natural gas? Quadra Homes offers high efficiency and lower homeowner expense at Yorkson Creek townhomes in Langley
Something exciting is happening in Langley Quadra Homes has been building quality homes in British Columbia for more than forty years and has earned their reputation as a company with integrity. The Townhomes at Quadra’s Yorkson Creek are built to high standard and are offered at a good price. Features, which would normally be upgrades, are included in the competitive price. Wonderful kitchens include granite countertops and deluxe wood cabinets. A stainless steel appliance package consisting of a side-by-side fridge, dishwasher and microwave is included in each home. A gas range, which is the dream of home chefs, is also included. “A gas dryer is a very compelling component of our townhome package because in the Lower Mainland, using a gas dryer costs about 11 cents to dry a load of clothes. This compares to between 14 cents and 20 cents when using an electric clothes dryer” says Shawn Bouchard of Quadra Homes. This exceptional quality continues throughout the rest of the home with genuine hardwood floors, nine-foot ceilings, natural gas fireplace; all in a central Langley setting with good access to public transit. Now, homebuyers will realize even more value as a result of a very interesting collaboration between
Quadra Homes and Fortis BC. These two British Columbia-based companies have collaborated to make the townhouse section of Quadra’s Yorkson Creek project hit a high environmental standard EnerGuide 80.
For the homeowner this means the monthly cost of running the home is greatly reduced. An added bonus for the first time buyers is that they can obtain a credit from CMHC because this is an EnerGuide 80 project.
“We collaborated with FortisBC on a natural gas pilot program for a number of reasons, including cost savings, unlimited hot water supply, the comfort of a high-end Carrier multi-speed furnace plus the tremendous advantages of gas dryers, stoves, barbecues and fireplaces. After reviewing all these considerations and the EnerGuide 80 rating for the home, we knew this package was a winner” said Quadra Homes Vice President, Paul DaDalt.
Quadra Homes worked with a Certified Energy Advisor to determine the least cost path to a more energy efficient home using natural gas appliances for space heat and domestic hot water. This study was an important first step in ensuring that the project would achieve EnerGuide 80 rating even before construction. Once the studies were complete, decisions were made to install Navien
Shawn Bouchard of Quadra Homes shows the small space used to produce all the heating and hot water needs for each townhome.
gas powered hot water heaters. These on-demand water heaters eliminate the need for a standard hot water tank and the energy needed to maintain water temperature. The Navien, powered by natural gas, boasts the industry’s highest efficiency rating at 98% which means low operating costs. This water heater also provides hot water at a very high gallon-per-minute (GPM) flow rate, which is very convenient for homeowners. The safety of the natural gas powered Navien system is enhanced by dual microprocessors that continually cross monitor performance to assure proper operation at all times. These microprocessors also maintain the steady hot water temperature. The second recommendation of the FortisBC study was the installation of a high-efficiency gas furnace. Quadra installed the Carrier Performance 96 Gas furnace. This furnace is aptly named as 96 cents of every dollar spent is going toward supplying usable heat to the home. The care taken to include highefficiency natural gas powered mechanics and appliances, coupled with high insulation, means the new owner will have a home which is warm and comfortable for the family, respectful to the environment, and costs less to run. Be sure to visit Yorkson Creek located at 208 Street and 82 Avenue in Langley. It is a winner all-around.

Renovations done without permits can seriously hurt the resale value of your home . . . or worse, your family’s safety. The best way to protect your family and your home is to hire a BC Safety Authority licensed contractor with the appropriate permit.
For peace of mind we recommend you hire a licensed contractor. Use this checklist for to make sure they:
A licensed contractor not only ensures safety practices are adhered to, they can help make sure the job runs smoothly. The contractor can obtain the permit on your behalf and manages the inspection process plus they can correct any deficiencies.
• Have liability insurance
A good contractor has the training and expertise required to do the job well and safely. And they employ people who are qualified and bonded. If you wish to “do-it-yourself” and have sufficient knowledge and ability to do the work, you may apply for a permit, provided that the work will be done on a single-family fully detached dwelling that is, or is intended to be, your permanent dwelling. It must not include one or more selfcontained suites and no person is being paid to do the work. If it’s a “do-it-yourself” job, an inspection is required and will be done by a BC Safety Authority Safety Officer to ensure that it’s safe. If the work is to be done by a licensed contractor, the inspection is arranged by them.
• Hold a valid BC Safety Authority Licence
Switch ‘n’ Shrink and get a $1000 rebate Switch from oil or propane to natural gas, install an ENERGY STAR® heating system and get a $1000 rebate.

Patio doors add ambiance ›› from page.1 er in the well-defined area of windows and doors. With over 100 years of experience in production and design, they have come a long way from church pews and bee-keeping equipment. The decision to specialize in windows and doors has allowed them to embrace new technologies while staying true to a long tradition specialization. Loewen’s Matt Penner says, “We have some beautiful choices available today to fit both the style of your home and add to the ambiance of your outdoor space. “At Loewen, we strive to provide our customers with the world’s most inspiring windows and doors – but as we inspire, we must also build reliability into everything we make.” We are all familiar with the classic French doors, sometimes referred to as terrace doors; traditional terrace doors hinge in the middle so that one panel is fixed and the other operates. By contrast, French terrace doors are hinged on the outside to allow both doors to operate from the middle. If this is your choice of
door, make sure you decide in advance which way you want the door to swing: inside or outside. Sliding patio doors are still around, but wooden doors that function like large moving windows are more popular than the traditional aluminum version. These striking doors are a huge improvement on the shuddering aluminum doors of yore. Those of us who are dedicated viewers of all things related to home design have seen the bifold terrace doors which, when folded back on themselves, virtually disappear. The bifold allows you to create a feeling of spaciousness by joining the interior and exterior living space. When closed, bifold doors provide privacy and protection while allowing unobstructed views. A fairly new system on the scene is the Loewen LiftSlide. This system allows expansive glass panels, some weighing up to 850 lbs., to roll smoothly and easily. The LiftSlide doors glide, with just the touch of a hand, on almost invisible stainless steel tracks, again allowing a blurring of the division between the interior and exterior space.
Patio doors from Loewen are available in several styles, including French terrace, bifold and LiftSlide. Submitted photos

“My electrical panel may be old, but it doesn’t look bad and it still works ...
It’s still OK, isn’t it?” Safety Tip: Every electrical panel should be assessed regularly by a professional electrician to determine whether it is still safe. I recently had the tires replaced on one of my service trucks because the tread had worn thin. I could clearly see that the tires needed replacement because tires wear out from the outside in.
Worn circuit breakers, deteriorated bus bars, corrosion, overloaded circuits and loose connections are just some of the problems that may exist in a system that is not inspected or properly maintained.
Your home’s electrical service, however, deteriorates from the inside out. Without regular professional maintenance and testing, you will never know when a dangerous and potentially life threatening failure might occur. Rarely will you see or experience anything seriously wrong with your system until it is too late. This requires the eye of a trained and experienced professional.
This is why residential electrical failures account for over 7,400 household fires a year. Many of these failures could have been prevented with a thorough electrical panel inspection.
The Primary Reasons for electrical system failures in residential homes are: Q Corrosion Q Heat-related damage Q Electrical Surges Q Improper original installations Q Improper additions & modifications

project exactly what you dreamed. “The company started with the owner, Don Fraser, selling railway ties from his garage then moved to the property on Byrne Rd in Burnaby many years ago,” says Northwest’s David Nelson. “He gradually added products as the demand grew and here we are today. The next step was buying up basalt quarries up along the Squamish/ Whistler corridor, which still harvest today.” Nelson’s advice to homeowners planning on building a drystacking wall, which are recommended up to three feet high, is to first make a base of gravel which helps level the ground and assists drainage. Stacking the stone is easy, but make sure you use the one-over-two method. This makes sure the seams are not in a straight line, which is not only unattractive but creates water channels. Halfway up the wall you need bond stones, which are longer stones that front the wall as the other stones, but reach further back into the bank to anchor the wall. As you begin to stack the wall, working from one end to the other,
you must slope it back toward the high ground, or “batter the wall.” With this slight leaning back, the bond stones and gravity all contribute to producing a solid wall. Another hint is to place landscape fabric behind the wall, which stops mud coming through the wall and spoiling the look. “It’s great when customers come back and show us photos of their beautiful completed projects,” says Nelson. “Large boulders are very popular, either as a focal point in the garden or as part of a larger setting. Northwest uses boulders from their own quarry, and don’t do any blasting. “These fall off the mountain naturally, some are 4 to 5ft across some with the moss and lichen still in place … We are very proud not to blast or bore into the mountain side; we let Mother Nature take her course and harvest what she sheds. “We are also very careful not to handle the harvest more than necessary. This maintains the natural look of the stone without claw marks, etc. from overhandling.”

Restoring this old house a labour of love Bill Farrand always loved the little farmhouse he saw every day on his way to work. It took until 2005 for him to make the purchase. By Maggie Calloway Have you ever thought about rescuing an old derelict farmhouse? Maybe a grand old dame of a house that needs a lot of TLC? Well fasten your seatbelt because you could be in for a bumpy ride. The story of Bill Farrand and the 1910-era house he turned into a much-loved home is one of inspiration, determination, and love. This house, which Bill was strangely drawn to for years, turned out to have previously unknown connections to Bill’s family over the last hundred years. The house was built by Charles Feedham in the early part of the last century in South Surrey, but the connection to the Farrand family started in New Westminster. The Farrand family came to New Westminster in the 1880s. When Bill was doing research into his family history he discovered that Charles Feedham lived very close to his great-grandfather in New Westminster, which was then a small town. Then in the 1890s they both lived in Burnaby, again very close neighbours. For years, as Bill drove back and forth to work, he saw this little farmhouse set back in the trees and he always thought it was an interesting house. In 2005, he saw a for sale sign. Feeling he couldn’t afford the house as it was sitting on a sizeable piece of property, he didn’t consider making an offer. Within a week a sold sign appeared, which put an end to any possibility. However, this was not the end of the story. “I found out the person who had bought the land, with house, was an old … friend of mine. I still had his phone number so I called and we got together,” Farrand says. “The buyer planned on sub-dividing the property so a deal was made for me to buy the house and one lot and then move the house about 50 feet onto its new, permanent spot. “This house which had intrigued me for years was now mine.” Farrand moved into the house, in its original location and condition, to provide security and to get a good feel for the bones. Once it came time to move the house, he had to move into rental accommodation and get the house ready for its journey. Once moved, a new foundation had to be built before the house was lowered into position. Next, work commenced on the carriage house/garage with its large suite on the upper floor so Farrand could move back on site. Now that the house was firmly on a new foundation, the real work began. The house is not huge, as was the style in early part of the last century. Two floors are only 625 square feet each but because a new foundation was necessary, Farrand was able to expand the lower floor to the exterior dimension of the veranda which turned into a generous 1,000 sq. ft. What was originally a cellar with a ceiling you would bang your head on, became two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room and a family room. “The main floor has the kitchen, the entrance, the living room and dining room. What were originally four little rooms has been opened up,” says Farrand. “Upstairs there are two bedrooms and two bathrooms.”
The farmhouse was built around 1910, and was originally quite small. Homeowner Bill Farrand was able to expand the lower floor from 625 square feet to 1,000, and moved the house from its original location by about 50 feet.

Greenhouses offer enthusiasts year-round opportunity to exercise their green thumbs ›› from page.1 home gardener. “Do they want a productive greenhouse that’s going to be the easiest possible greenhouse to grow in, or are they looking for a greenhouse which will be a showpiece in the garden?â€? Exner said. “If the goal is a greenhouse which will add value to the property and look fabulous with hanging baskets and flowers, we would steer them towards a glass greenhouse but if the primary focus is on, say, food production we would steer them towards a polycarbonate greenhouse.â€? Other practical details also come into play – do you need a building permit in your municipality? What is the best location for your greenhouse? If you’re looking for the best spot, keep in mind that the optimal position is with the longest side of the greenhouse facing south. Six hours of available sunlight in the winter is ideal. Find out what kind of foundation is suitable for your location. If you choose concrete you are committing to a permanent site, whereas a wood frame foundation permits both the ability to move the greenhouse if necessary and the possibility of extending the structure’s length in the future. Flooring is another decision; if you leave the soil as is, so as to grow directly in it with tomatoes for instance, keep in mind that if your tomatoes get a disease, you have a problem that may take a couple of years to resolve. Gravel is a popular choice as it is easy on the feet, can easily be installed and is easy to maintain. A concrete floor, as mentioned ear-

lier, is a more permanent choice that can be maintained just by hosing off into a drain. All are good choices which need to be thought through in advance. “A good starter greenhouse is an 8’ x 8’, says Exner. “This is much better than a 6’ x 8’ because it gives two 32-inch wide growing benches plus a 30-inch walkway so you are not cramped. Exner warns that if you are planning to add onto your new greenhouse in the future, you will need to keep that in mind when you’re building the original structure. Gardeners who would like a larger greenhouse but are concerned about the cost of heating a big space can control the area being used at any given time in the growing season by installing a temporary wall. This allows just a section of the greenhouse to be
heated, say early in the season when seeding. As you start potting up and require more space, the temporary wall can be gradually moved to accommodate your specific needs. At the other end of the season, a temporary wall allows you to section off the greenhouse to keep tropical plants safe over the winter in one section and keep plants dormant in the other. The heat spillover from the tropical side is enough to keep your dormant plants from freezing. If you are looking for a space in the garden which expands your living and entertaining space, a garden room may fit the bill. “Our garden room greenhouses are the ultimate in glass houses. These are definitely estate greenhouses, says Exner. “We make them a fully functional growing or living/growing space meaning you will
have active ventilation and exhaust system and motorized ridge vents. We use different gauges of tubular aluminum frames to give them a wider profile; they look like they are wood beams. This means that, along with stainless steel fasteners, there are no maintenance issues, he says. “Typically, garden rooms are all glass, although we have produced some with polycarbonate roofs for both insulation and shading, Exner says. “But now, with the high performance soft coat Low E glass available, all-glass garden rooms work well. If you are a gardener, installing a greenhouse is the ultimate, so enjoy every minute of it for years to come. For info, visit www.bcgreenhouses.com. ADVERTISEMENT

Mowing a large lawn seems like such a simple task and it can be if you have a yard or garden tractor with the right features. Turn Tight™ Technology enables homeowners to manicure their lawn quickly and easily while reducing the amount of gas needed to get the job done. This is because Turn Tight™ technology features an innovative steering system to help the user closely mow around objects, like garden gnomes, and quickly and easily cut grass around tight spaces created by trees and flower beds without the need to reverse. Turn Tight™ Technology is an
innovative steering system that offers a tighter turning radius to be able to efficiently mow around obstacles, such as garden beds and shrubs, without using the reverse motion. This means that in many instances you do not have to get off your tractor to complete the job manually. For open areas, a tight turning radius is important as it allows users to quickly turn around and mow parallel to the last mowed swath in the opposite direction. Tractors with a large turning radius require more time and more use of the reverse gear to properly position the unit for parallel path mowing. Turn Tight™ Technology is unique to models of Craftsman yard and garden tractors and is a great choice for homeowners as it offers the maneuverability of a zero-turn tractor but in a comfortable, compact design that is easier to learn to drive and better on hills. The new Turn Tight™ Technology is available exclusively at Sears Canada.
