One of Canada’s most popular and successful singer/songwriters, Sarah McLachlan performed in Abbotsford on Sunday night.
For three hours on Sunday night, the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre was a loud, energetic and emotional support system for Sarah McLachlan. From the moment she belted out her first verse, to the inclusive question and answer periods, the fans were on McLachlan’s side, especially when she spoke candidly about her divorce and struggles as a single mom. It was the last performance for the Canadian singer and songwriter on her Sarah and Friends Tour, which has taken her across North America. She was promoting Laws of Illusion, her first studio album of new material in seven years, in which time she has divorced and learned how to be a single mother of two. Since starting her career in 1988, McLachlan has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, won three Grammys, eight Junos, received the Order of Canada, and has been recognized for advancing the careers of women by starting the Lilith Fair Concert Series, the first all-female touring festival. As soon as McLachlan walked onto the stage, wearing black leather boots, black skinny jeans and a silver tank top, which was dripping in strands of glitter, the crowd started to scream, whistle and cheer – something they kept up throughout the evening. During the first half of the show, McLachlan performed hits such as Building a Mystery, Loving You Is Easy, I Will Remember You and
A man who is awaiting sentencing for aggravated assault in the 2008 death of his common-law wife was arrested and charged again on Wednesday in Abbotsford. Daniel Raymond Casgrain, 57, was charged with resisting or obstructing a police officer and breach of his bail conditions. Const. Ian MacDonald said police received a call from a clothing store in the 2300 block of McCallum Road that an intoxicated man was causing a disturbance. Police then found Casgrain, the alleged suspect, in the 33000 block of Mayfair Avenue. Casgrain allegedly tried to punch the officer who arrived on scene and placed him in handcuffs, MacDonald said. One of the conditions of his bail is that he not consume alcohol. Casgrain was taken into custody and was released on $500 bail. He is next due to appear on the charges May 5 in Abbotsford provincial court. He is also slated to be sentenced Sept. 6 in Chilliwack Supreme Court after pleading guilty to the aggravated assault of Hendrikje (Ricky) Priester.
Priester, 52, was found dead by police in the couple’s Mayfair Avenue apartment approximately 12 hours after a 911 call was made from the home on March 25, 2008. An operator who answered the call did not believe it was an emergency and thought it was related to a theft that might have occurred. Abbotsford Police formally apologized to the Priester family for not dispatching officers to the home when the call was placed. Casgrain was initially charged with second-degree murder. Those charges were stayed in May 2008, and Casgrain faced the lesser charge of manslaughter a few months later. That charge was dismissed last year, due to lack of evidence for a conviction, and he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. Sentencing was originally scheduled for September 2010, but has been delayed numerous times because Casgrain was recovering from being struck by a car while crossing the road in his mobility scooter. More details of Priester’s death will be revealed at the sentencing.

Fast dominates
‘They gave us the majority we asked for.’ Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
Abbotsford MP Ed Fast easily held onto his riding, returning to Ottawa as part of a “strong, stable, Conservative, majority, government,” as he said in his acceptance speech Monday night. “This is an historic night. Canadians have spoken, and they have spoken clearly,” he told an enthusiastic crowd of about 100 Conservative faithful at the campaign headquarters on South Fraser Way. “They gave us the majority we asked for.” As The News went to press on election night, the Conservatives were leading or declared in 166 ridings – a considerable cushion over the 155 needed to form a majority government. The NDP’s orange wave swept through Quebec, washing away all but three of the Bloc Quebecois’ former 47 seats (at

Jack Layton’s NDP improved to official opposition status, going from 36 seats to leading in 105.
Fast said local NDP candidate David Murray had warned about the orange wave. “It appears that wave crested well before it hit Abbotsford,” joked Fast.

During his speech, a cheer went up from the crowd when TV news reported that Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff had lost his seat. “Let’s not gloat,” said Fast, noting Ignatieff had served his country, and adding “let’s give him the respect he deserves.” Fast thanked his wife Annette and family, mentor George Ferguson, God, his key volunteers and even his opponents. “I want to thank you for running a clean but vigorous campaign,” he said. With 240 of the 278 polls reported, Fast had 65 per cent of the vote, Murray 20 per cent, Liberal Madeleine Hardin 10 per cent and the Green Party’s Daniel Bryce at four. Murray said his campaign had laid a foundation for future NDP campaigns in Abbotsford, noting that the party was headed toward its best campaign ever in the riding. “It’s a great day to be a New Democrat in this country,” he said. In Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission, Conservative incumbent Randy Kamp had a lead of more than 8,000 votes at press time.
UFV city campus planned for Clearbrook Library facility Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
A new satellite campus for the University of the Fraser Valley could be open by the beginning of 2012. UFV and the city have an agreement in principle to allow the educational facility to lease the basement of the Clearbrook Library. An information report, presented to council on Monday, outlined the proposal which would see UFV fund all the renovations. The deal has a completion deadline of January 2012. As part of the basement renovations, a small expan-
sion will be made to the city’s UFV a stable presence in the record storage (1,700 square heart of the city. feet) which is also located in Discussions between the the basement. two parties have been “This is a great deal ongoing, ever since the for the city and UFV,” basement became availsaid Mark Taylor, able for use. full details are now being released because the city recently received permission from the provincial Ministry of Advanced Education to move forward. According to a report by UFV’s Dr. Sue Brigden, enrolment in Abbotsford has increased to the point that UFV lacks sufficient space to accommodate some programs. Several years ago, UFV leased property from the city and created the Marshall Road Annex (at 34194 Marshall Rd). Classes offered there will be relocated to the bigger library space.
Discarded debris from a wood stove is believed to be the cause of a house fire Friday morning at 31611 Harris Rd. in Abbotsford. A neighbour reported the fire just before 10 a.m. Crews arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the rear of the one-storey home. Deputy fire chief Mike Helmer said the occupant of the house had left just a short time before the blaze began. Approximately 20 firefighters and eight rigs from two fire halls fought the fire, bringing it under control in about 10 minutes. Fire, smoke and water damage is estimated to be $60,000.
GUNS FOUND IN SUSPECT’S TRUCK It began with a break-in at a store in Sevenoaks Shopping Centre and ended several days later with two loaded handguns being found in a suspect’s pickup truck. Abbotsford Police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald said the incident began April 23 at a clothing and sporting goods store. The alarm was triggered, and video surveillance revealed a man had hidden himself in the store and had broken the exterior glass door and lock to escape. He did not steal any items. An officer recognized the man, and arranged a meeting with him, but didn’t tell him the reason. The two met at a coffee shop on Sunday, and the suspect was arrested for the break-in. MacDonald said the culprit had driven there in his pickup truck and asked the officer to go to his vehicle to obtain his OxyContin pills. As the officer was searching the truck for the pills, he came across a loaded .45-calibre semi-automatic handgun in the centre console. This warranted a further search, after which a second loaded gun – a .357 Magnum – was found in the driver’s door, MacDonald said. Also found in the vehicle were gloves, two balaclavas, large zap straps (cable ties), a hatchet, a pry bar and a hammer – items that are commonly used in robberies and break-ins.

‘It never gets old’ From A4
World On Fire. Before and after the intermission, McLachlan handed the stage over to her “musical family” and band-mates, Butterfly Boucher and Melissa McClelland, singing backup for both. Throughout the night, remarks like “I love you, Sarah,” and “Stay single, Sarah,” could be heard – especially when she spoke about how divorce and motherhood has changed her as a person and inspired her music. But nothing got the crowd as involved as the question and answer period, where McLachlan answered inquiries submitted before and during the show, pulling them from a black top hat. The first question of the night: Have you ever caught a sturgeon? McLachlan said she had caught a fish once, but when she saw her boyfriend at the time club it over the head, she decided it was her last time. The questions ran the gamut, inquiring about everything from McLachlan’s weight (to which she responded that she’s over 140 and loving every pound of it), to what other instruments she plays besides piano and guitar. The latter saw

McLachlan coaxed onto the drum set for an impromptu jam with her band. She was also asked about the importance of her girlfriends, who were all in attendance. “My friends are here tonight – if you haven’t already noticed,” she joked. The group of women danced and cheered from beside the stage for the entire show. When asked her favourite tour memory, she answered, “Right here, right now.” “This is my favourite show ...” she said. “It never gets old, never gets tired,” she said at the end of the performance. “I’m privileged to keep getting the opportunity to play for people that still care about live music.” Following a standing ovation, McLachlan returned to the stage for an encore. Sitting at her piano, flanked by Boucher and McClelland, she sang Angel. “Everyone needs a little dessert,” she said, leading into the song Ice Cream, singing it with the help of the audience. After the upbeat tune, she raised her guitar in one hand, offering a thank-you to Abbotsford for a great show.

Fund ailing justice system Health care. Education. The HST. There’s no shortage of hot-button issues clamouring for government attention as a possible provincial election looms. But there’s an elephant in the room, one that has been ailing for nearly a decade. B.C.’s legal system is in big trouble. Justice Denied, the five-week Black Press investigation into the various components of the system, has revealed a precarious house of cards. Provincial funding cuts dating back to 2003 have reduced the number of sitting judges, fuelling a trial backlog that increasingly lets criminals go free because of unconstitutional delays. The result? More than 2,100 cases are now at risk of being tossed out of court due to waits that threaten to violate the accused’s right to be tried within a reasonable time. Savvy defence lawyers are exploiting the dysfunction in the system to their advantage. Accused criminals – some charged with serious crimes such as impaired driving causing bodily harm – are getting away scot-free.
But perhaps the hardest hit are the victims – regular people impacted by crime and relying on a deteriorating legal system. The verdict on the possibility of a quick fix is grim. February’s provincial budget approved another $14.5 million in cuts to the judicial system for 2011-2012 – followed by a funding freeze for the next two years, until 2014. This despite the fact a tax on legal services – originally created to support legal aid – funnels $145 million each year into the province’s general revenues. It’s estimated about $25 million annually in additional funding would bring staffing levels in the court system up to the levels they were six years ago. Aside from health care, one would be hard-pressed to identify an issue that cuts across all walks of life and has, directly or indirectly, affected nearly everyone. If Premier Christy Clark is serious about her “Putting Families First” platform, fixing B.C.’s debilitated justice system must be among her top priorities. – Black Press

Other Hand Sunday night Barak Obama certainly knocked questions of the authenticity of his birth certificate right off the radar. He also knocked the wind out of the sails of The Comb-Over and Shotgun Sarah. Obama’s comment that he had contacted former President George W. Bush to let him know Osama bin Laden was dead also brought a smile to my face, imagining the conversation to begin with something like “Hi Dubya, we got him and you didn’t . . . Na, Na, Na, Na!” And on the day of what may become Canada’s most important election, not a word of it on the front pages of our daily newspapers, completely consumed with the death of bin Laden, followed by snippets of Will and Kate’s nuptials. Just shows you where Steve, Iggy and Jack rank in our consciousness on this national day of reckoning. Interestingly,
while Osama’s swan song was sung in Abbottabad, Harper was delivering his last campaign hurrah in Abbotsford ... the Conservatives hoping, I’m sure, for a considerably different end-result of those two meetings in similar sounding towns on opposite sides of the world. But the tale is being told as I write this, and by the time you read today’s newspaper, Canadians will have, for better or worse, richer or poorer as they said in London last week, determined our national future – probably only for the time being, if past history is an indication. What is more secure, after the dispatching of bin Laden, is Obama’s presidency that up until now seemed to be tottering on the same brink as a majority government for Stephen Harper. I have to wonder what political crisis it was that triggered Sunday’s firefight, considering that the Americans have known where the al-Qaida leader has been ensconced for the past nine months. Surely it couldn’t have been the above-mentioned birth certificate, though that appears to have been the only questionable, and challengeable, piece of news raised by the Republicans
in recent days. Regardless, Obama is now a hero and by implication George W. is the goat, and the royal wedding is no longer top of mind for American wanna-be monarchists whose only real flirtation with Camelot was the long-past Kennedy
Unlike Sunday’s killing of bin Laden, the victims of our homegrown terrorist act still have no closure. years. At least in this 10th anniversary year of the terrible and tragic attack on the World Trade Center there is some kind of closure, a feeling that in a small way the loss of those thousands of innocent lives has been avenged. What continues to worry, and is cause to consider that this may have been expected, was the commitment a week ago by extremist Muslims that should
bin Laden be killed, a nuclear device hidden somewhere in Europe would be detonated. Extremism and the terrorists it spawns has no place in religion, or anywhere else, and it is shameful that the clerics of the world do not unite in condemnation of it. Until they do, we will continually face the prospect of sombre commemorations of the deaths at the World Trade Centre or, as we also remember on this 25th anniversary year of the worst act of terrorism developed on Canadian soil – the bombing of Air India Flight 182. Three hundred and twenty-nine men, women and children, almost all Canadian citizens, died in that tragedy when Sikh extremists from right here in British Columbia blew them out of the sky over Ireland. Unlike Sunday’s killing of bin Laden, the victims of our homegrown terrorist act still have no closure. Maybe we, like the Americans, need to take our politics and the ability to act with relentless conviction a little more seriously.

letters PIZZA & PLAYOFFS Speed bumps on Whatcom WATCH THEM HERE!
Re: Speed control on Whatcom Road and Mountain Drive. I think speed control bumps, as those along O Ave. would be an effective, less costly answer to controlling speeding. How much would a few blobs of asphalt cost to spread out? Our mayor stated that cars speed down McKee Road as well, but that is a
straighter road without the amount of housing alongside, and is not as steep as Whatcom. The downward slope starts at the top of the new connector. By the time a car reaches the first lights at Regal Park Way, which is situated around a blind corner, the potential for a high rate of
speed is great. There are five more cor ners on the downhill route before reaching the freeway. The potential for a high speed crash or a car losing control is high. Bumps at the major intersections – at the very least Lower Sumas Mountain Road and Whatcom would work in
decreasing speed. I fear it will be only a matter of time before an accident occurs, bringing back memories of the deaths on the Mission bridge, and two cars sailing off the slope of Whatcom and McKee due to the dragging of feet by officials in addressing road safety issues. Edward Bunker

T-Wolves can’t be topped Seventh straight title for Bateman girls highlights city sevens tourney Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
JOHN VAN PUTTEN
Abbotsford News
Bateman’s Lauren Kerr tackles Tiffany Picketts of Abby Collegiate during Friday’s city sevens final.
This was supposed to be a rebuilding season for the senior girls rugby team at Robert Bateman Secondary, but the Timberwolves are simply refusing to conform to those expectations. On Friday, the T-Wolves extended their incredible run of success at the Abbotsford city sevens tournament, winning a seventh consecutive championship. The T-Wolves rallied from an early deficit to beat Abby Collegiate
12-5 in the final. The victory is all the more remarkable considering Bateman graduated 13 players from last year’s provincial AA championship squad. More than half the current roster is comprised of Grade 9 athletes. “I don’t know how we seem to do it, mused Madi Blakeburn, who starred for Bateman’s B.C. championship team last year and now serves as the T-Wolves’ coach. “Even though we’re young, we’re coming together. The players
really feed off each other. In other city sevens action, Yale Secondary swept to victory in the
senior boys and junior boys divisions, while Eugene Reimer Middle School dominated the Grade 8 level. The
Ravens finished atop both the boys and girls draws. For more coverage, visit abbynews.com

The Magnuson Ford Mariners U18 boys celebrated a Coastal Cup title on Saturday.
Mariners hoist Cup Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
In the wake of his team's triumph in the Coastal 'A' Cup final on Saturday, Magnuson Ford Mariners FC under-18 boys coach Alan Errington offered the highest praise that can be given to an Abbotsford soccer team. "I think we're even a stronger squad than we had when we won nationals twice in a row," Errington said, referring to the much-celebrated Abbotsford side which claimed Canadian titles in 2002 and 2003. "Whenever I've got the starting lineup on the field, I look at the bench and I go, 'Wow.' There's not one weak player." The Mariners' depth shone through during Saturday's 2-0 win over the North Shore Selects at Richmond's Minoru Stadium. The Abbotsford side dominated from the opening whistle, and could have easily scored four or five more goals with a little better finish. "Sometimes, when you make changes, it weakens your team,"
Errington said. "But we actually got stronger, because the players who came in, I think some of them were actually a little upset that they didn't start. They came in with the attitude of, 'I'll show you.' And they were absolutely fantastic." Both Abby goals were created by right back Colton O'Neill. In the 22nd minute, the Abby captain's throw-in sprung his twin brother Connor on a breakaway, and he chipped the ball over the keeper. In the 53rd minute, Colton's free kick from 40 yards found the foot of Trent Mayer, who buried it to give the Mariners a 2-0 cushion. Striker Justin Sekhon was named game MVP, while keeper Matthew Kidwell picked up his third clean sheet in four Coastal Cup games. The Magnuson Ford club moves on to the B.C. title game against the the Interior champ. Since the Interior clubs are just beginning their season, that game won't take place until the first weekend of July. The winner advances to nationals, Oct. 5-10 in Fredricton, N.B. Forest Stewardship Plan Amendment #1 Notice is hereby given that the Leq’a:mel Forestry Limited Partnership submitted Forest Stewardship Plan Amendment #1 for Non Replaceable Forest License (NRFL) A79504. This amendment was submitted with a request for an exemption, of Section 20(1) of the Forest Practices and Planning Regulation (FPPR), to provide a period of public review and comment. The reason for this exemption was that this amendment was prepared to update the Forest Stewardship Plan to include the requirements expressed in the Spotted Owl Management Plan 2 for the Chilliwack Forest District. As provided in Section 20(3) of the FPPR, the Delegated Decision Maker granted this exemption, and, as outlined in Section 20(4) of the FPPR, this notice has been prepared to specify that the Forest Stewardship Plan Amendment #1 has been approved without having been made publicly available for review and comment. Additionally, operations under the Forest Stewardship Plan #1 have been authorized to commence on April 29, 2011.

Hyundai takes a different approach to mid-size hybridization Hybrid shoppers are invited to Abbotsford Hyundai to experience the new 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, one of the top five ranked greenest cars of 2011. The award goes to the car that proves to the least harmful to the environment while getting the most MPGs. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has proven itself with a fuel economy of 37 city and 39 highway miles per gallon. The Sonata also can reach 62 miles per hour when in all-electric mode, one of the highest speed hybrids can reach in this mode. A special feature also lets the driver know how ecofriendly or efficient they are driving by showing images of the sky. Starting from grey the more efficient you drive the bluer the sky gets. The Hyundai-developed Hybrid Blue Drive architecture is a full parallel hybrid drive system, which can operate on an electric motor, gasoline internal combustion engine, and a combination of the two depending on driving conditions and driver demands. Hyundai’s proprietary full parallel architecture differs from the power split technology used
by most competitors, allowing significant efficiency advantages at higher speeds. Hyundai Hybrid Blue Drive is the first and only system using lithium polymer battery technology – leapfrogging competitive inmarket nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion applications. Hyundai Hybrid Blue Drive is a new addition to a full suite of eco-focused products and technologies that Hyundai offers in its goal to be the auto industry’s global eco-leader. According to the EPA, Hyundai has led the U.S. industry in fuel economy for 2008 and 2009, and is currently the only automaker with average fleet fuel economy of more than 30 miles per gallon. The Sonata Hybrid is also fluidly designed, combining sophisticated styling with advanced hybrid technology. Hyundai designers have taken Sonata’s fluidic sculpture design language a bit further with Sonata Hybrid, making it even more aerodynamic. The goal was a modern, eco-friendly design, with “ata-glance” differentiation from the non-hybrid Sonata models. FAVOURITE VEHICLE: ‘67 MUSTANG

Students find their

he youth of Abbotsford have come together to form a single voice of reason. And now they’re looking for some changes to take place in the community – including the elimination of racism and bullying, improved bus schedules, better ways to manage stress, the creation of a youth crisis hotline and more opportunities for exchange programs in schools. Those are a few of the points that made it onto the A9 Youth Declaration – a document resembling the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It was drafted following the A9 Youth Summit last week, which saw a handful of young ambassadors lead a forum attended by representatives from local high schools and community members. They discussed and listed the main issues facing today’s youth and how

Under diversity, the youth highlight the importance of multicultural clubs in schools. They also suggest that student-volunteers connect with international students and immigrants to provide assistance at school and in the community. When it comes to safety, the youth want to utilize social media to advertise positive life choices. They also aim at expelling the “cool” stigma associated with criminal activity, and hope the Abbotsford Police Department will continue providing education in local schools. Increasing youth-oriented activities in the community will help youth reach their potential, according to the declaration – as will providing more opportunities for youth to showcase their talents, ranging from artistic to Continued on B8

alcoholism, drug addiction, depression, mental disorder, body image and STIs. Under the umbrella of education, increased support for student-led clubs and activities and a more personalized learning environment were two prevalent items. Recognizing teachers who are positive mentors was another topic. Environmentally, the students would like individuals in Abbotsford to take on roles that will assist with the conservation of the environment. Community gardens and a more eco-friendly environment at school were also important. And finally, the students believe that increasing the number of internships and apprenticeships within the
athletic, along with more outlets to express opinions, ideas and thoughts. The transportation section suggests the development of a more advanced public transit system, including more effective routes. A need for affordable driving instructions and a review of the certain restrictions on Class 7L and 7N licence was also listed. Health-wise, the students would like to create confidential meetings that give youth with similar health issues the opportunity to share their experiences, as a means of support. They’re also hoping to develop a greater understanding of health issues that affect the community, such as

community, and putting an end to age discrimination, will provide Abbotsford youth with more opportunities. Once the declaration has been signed by the mayor, the delegates will print copies and distribute them to local schools, education centres and public buildings. During the coming months, the team will also be brainstorming ways to implement many of the changes listed, hopefully with help of the community. Bae plans to turn the A9 Youth Summit into an annual event, where the declaration will be reviewed to see what has taken place since the last meeting. For more information visit www.a9summit.com.

Vines can provide a fast cover up
Looking for a simple but fast cover-up to screen an old fence or wall, an unsightly building or a nosy neighbour? Why not make good use of some interesting and attractive vines. Most folks plant vines, like clematis and honeysuckle, for their lovely flowers, but attractive, carefree foliage is also something to be considered. One of the most un-
usual and attractive is a delightful kiwi vine that has dappled pink edges on its leaves all summer long. The leaves come out green in the early spring, then turn white and, eventually, pink. It has small white flowers that can be pollinated by planting both male and female vines. Its fruit, which is simply delicious, is very similar to the small grape-like kiwi. Its proper name is
Actinidia koBrian lomikta. For fast g r o w i n g vines that are great coverups on chain fences or unattractive cement walls, try one of the many forms of Virginia Creeper. Parthenocissus quinquefolia is the traditional large-leafed variety that turns brilliant red in fall. The so-called Boston
Minter
Gardening Ivy, P. tricuspidata ‘Veitchii, has smaller and more elegant foliage with all the same characteristics. Its new growth is a purple red all summer long, and this plant is quite pollution resistant.
Borrow to get ahead. Really?
There are a few new varieties now available, like P. henryana, that have attractive variegated foliage. Even in winter, the massive network of vines makes them effective. A very classy and elegant vine that is sel-
dom used is a dainty small-leafed akebia. It is a semi-evergreen vine that produces fragrant small purple flowers that are in bloom right now. This Japanese native also produces small, sausage-shaped fruit. It is an effective, fast growing vine that would be useful almost anywhere.
B9
The vine being promoted in many magazines today is the Hummingbird Vine. In our region it does not bloom until midsummer, but when it does, its huge orange to scarlet blossoms are really quite something. Its leaves are very lush and fast growing, making it an Continued on B10

ideal cover for old stumps, walls or trellises. There are many varieties available today, but ask for Campsis radicans or C. tagliabuana Madame Galen for the bright orange flowers that appeal to hummingbirds. The newest variety, Indian Summer, has a slightly lighter orange colour but blooms earlier and longer. It’s quite amazing. All campsis need little care but must have a hot, sunny area for the best performance. They can be invasive, so root pruning is recommended to keep them well behaved. If you want fast, then one vine I really should mention is the Silver Lace Vine, Polygonum aubertii. Often called the Mile-a-Minute Vine, it is among the fastest growing, stretching up to 12 feet per season. To cover a patio, pole, old fence or anything unsightly for that matter, it is the best. I have run these vines up evergreen trees for a striking effect each summer as the lacy white blossoms provide a nice contrast. It is the vine which seems to grow anywhere, with little care.

In honour of the centennial, the Centre for Indo Canadian Studies at UFV is hosting this international conference. The theme of the conference builds on the concept of juncture as a point of time, especially one made critical or important by an occurrence of circumstances. The conference questions the juncture of transnational Punjabis in their collective realities and imagination in the 21st century and/or departure from accepted norms. We seek to better understand the guide posts for this transnational cultural community in its continuous trajectory of immigrant, settler, citizen, activist, futurist and leader. The goal of the conference is to develop a greater understanding of Punjabis in the 21st century as a transnational entity with an ever-evolving identity, form and development of communities. The conference seeks to engage local, national and international scholars on Punjabi Diaspora, Migration, Transnational communities, Religion, Language and Literature, Art and Culture, and Identity and Cultural Politics.
