Incumbent George Peary loses seat as P3 proposal soundly rejected Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Abbotsford voters crushed the Stave Lake water project referendum on Saturday night, and replaced Mayor George Peary with political newcomer Bruce Banman. More than 74 per cent of voters (23,649 vs. 8,119) said no to the plan to create a public-private partnership (P3) to create a new water source and treatment plant at Stave Lake. Just over 38 per cent of the Abbotsford’s 86,736 eligible voters went to the polls, up from 33 per cent three years ago, and compared to a provincial 2011 average of 29.6 per cent. Peary said while it’s hard to pinpoint just one thing, the public backlash against the P3 proposal was likely a major reason for his defeat. “I was a champion for the P3 water project and it went down dramatically. It was way, way worse than I thought it would be,” said Peary. Banman was opposed to the project. Despite replacing Peary, voters returned all incumbents to city hall. The top two vote-getters, Coun. Patricia Ross and newcomer Henry Braun, both campaigned against the P3 plan. Ross said speaking to voters prior to election night had her convinced it would be a no vote, but she was surprised by the three-quarter margin. “People weren’t comfortable with a private company running our water for 30 years,” said Ross. And she said people wanted to know more about the city’s options, and needed Continued on A7

In the end, he won by 1,143 votes, garnering 13,837 (43.2 per cent) to Peary’s 12,694 (39.6 per cent). Peary told The News, “I’ve really enjoyed being mayor. I thank them (residents) for the confidence they’ve had in me, 18 years on council, three years as a school trustee and three years as mayor. So, I’ve had a great run. “My head is bloodied but it’s unbowed. I leave with no regrets.” Peary said the city has some challenges ahead, but he’s confident that Banman and the council will “meet them head on and keep things moving.”

NewsBytes ARREST IN PEPPER-SPRAY INCIDENT A public plea from Abbotsford Police has helped capture a man wanted in the pepper-spray attack of two people. Const. Ian MacDonald said Christopher William Baird, 30, was arrested Friday afternoon after police received a tip. He was found in an outbuilding on a property in the 1800 block of Shore Crescent. Police released Baird’s photo after he fled from the scene where he allegedly pepper-sprayed a man and a woman with whom he had been in a verbal dispute. The incident took place Nov. 14 in a parking lot in the 30800 block of Peardonville Road. Baird was charged with one count of uttering threats and two counts of assault, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. His criminal background includes convictions for assault, theft and drug possession, according to the provincial court database. Earlier this month, he went on trial in Chilliwack and was convicted of possession of a firearm and carrying a weapon with ammunition. He was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and a lifetime firearms ban.

BORDER JUMPERS FOUND Two border jumpers were found in a berry field and arrested by Abbotsford Police on Sunday night. Police were contacted by U.S. border patrol at about 7:40 p.m., saying they had located a vehicle with four people on their side of the border, but two others had likely made their way into Canada in the area of Ross Road and O Avenue. Patrol officers and a K9 unit found the two men, ages 24 and 35, in the 29000 block of O Avenue. Const. Ian MacDonald said the two spoke limited English and were of South Asian descent. They have been turned over to the Canadian Border Services Agency.

coming weeks. City manager Frank Pizzuto said staff will not take any action other than to brief the new mayor and councillors. He explained that in the first quarter of 2012, council will spend a lot of time on orientation, strategic directions, the 2012 budget and the water source issue. “At that point I suspect council will give staff some direction ... so I don’t think it’s time for us to step out anywhere, other than getting council up to speed,” said Pizzuto.

Mission residents cleared out the mayor and nearly the entire council in a victory by the Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government (CRMG) slate. Local business owner Ted Adlem unseated the two-term incumbent, earning 3,728 votes compared to James Atebe’s 2,465. Mike Gildersleeve took 827 votes, while Dan Williamson tallied 343. CRMG came out with an early lead and held it; the gap widened by a few hundred votes as each new polling station reported, and shortly after 8:30 p.m., Adlem was the winner. Jenny Stevens, also with CRMG, received the highest number of votes (3,720). Sitting at council with her now will be Dave Hensman (2,546), Jeff Jewell (2,843), Tony Luck (2,956),

During his victory speech, a jubilant Adlem said that he “could not have dreamt we would have swept.” He added with this decisive victory, things will be changing in Mission, and then thanked all the supporters and volunteers. “I’m really excited about the future of Mission,” said Hensman. Atebe said that he has accepted the results. “At the moment I have to say that, while disappointed, I can’t question the community’s decision. I am proud of my record and I have left a very strong foundation for the community.” See the Thursday edition of the Mission City Record and missioncityrecord.com for more coverage.

Back to the table

What a tumultuous night. Saturday evening, Abbotsford voters decisively sank the P3 Stave Lake water project, with almost 75 per cent opposed – a far different picture than the close race predicted by two phone polls commissioned by the city in preceding weeks. Clearly, the 38 per cent of the local electorate who turned out to the polls either did not accept the water requirement scenario depicted by the city, rejected private involvement in water delivery outright, and/or didn’t trust city hall to negotiate a P3 contract, and resented the lack of options to the nearly $300-million plan. And while he is only one vote on council, Mayor George Peary paid the price, losing his seat to a political newcomer, chiropractor Bruce Banman. It may have been a combination of the taxpayer-supported Heat hockey deal, the financially struggling sports arena, rising taxes, or a number of other issues in addition to the P3 pro-

posal, but voter dissatisfaction targeted the mayor. It’s deeply ironic, in that the voters who punished Peary for council’s decisions re-elected every incumbent who ran. The only new face at the council table other than Banman will be Henry Braun, who took the seat left open by departing Coun. Lynne Harris. Nevertheless, the public did deliver a message to elected representatives. The water issue must be revisited, and alternatives explored. And, if federal funds become available again, they best not be tied to a P3 deal. The city’s need to address its water supply isn’t altered by a change in mayors. Neither are the challenges of growth and development. A fresh examination of the situation may yield different visions for the future – or conceivably, some time from now, we may be back at Stave Lake. It’s going to be an interesting term for this ‘new’ council.

Who needs Superman when we’ve got Banting and Best Katie

Bartel My

View Ahhh insulin, we’ve had quite the ride, haven’t we? In the beginning, I thought for sure you were my enemy, and just like the scared, little kid I was, I avoided you at all costs – health included. Instead of me being your recipient, my mom’s plants were injected full of you. But after the plants had all been massacred, and I had been sentenced to Children’s Hospital, and was forced to accept your wisdom, our relationship gradually evolved into something that is now quite beautiful. Some might even call it BFF-like. And so today, dear insulin, I give you homage. November is Diabetes Awareness Month. I’ll be honest. Despite having this disease for more than 24 years,

I had no clue that Nov. 14 was World Diabetes Day until just last month. It probably had something to do with the fact that I never really cared, and quite frankly I’m still kind of dubious about the whole “day” thing. All day last Monday, the Twitter feed, blogs, even my own email were buzzing with people expressing happiness about this day. I don’t know how many times I saw “Happy World Diabetes Day” posted. Really? Are we happy about diabetes? Really? Diabetes, despite its many attempts, hasn’t ruined me. I’m alive. I’m healthy. I’m happy. But I’m not happy about this disease. So no, I did not say “Happy World Diabetes Day” last Monday, but I did say thanks to those super duper, totally awesome Canadian superheroes for the invention of insulin. I do every day. In 1921, 90 years ago, Dr. Frederick Banting and med student Charles Best discovered that insulin taken from the pancreas of cows could save the lives of humans. They went against the odds, fought to do the

research when others doubted its importance, and even when they were given a tiny, decaying lab to work out of at the University of Toronto, didn’t back down. Their discovery was like a miracle for us diabetics.

I can eat chocolate, I can run marathons, I can have a love-hate relationship with the Grouse Grind. I can dream. I can live. Before Banting and Best, before Humulin-R and NPH, Humalog and Lantus, Novorapid and Levimir (all insulins I have taken over the years), we diabetics were crammed into a hospital room and starved – like Third-World-country, hair-falling-out, belly-extended-starved – to enable us

just a few more years on Earth. Betting those weren’t exactly the most enjoyable years. My life, while not always easy, has been nothing like that. I can eat chocolate, I can run marathons, I can have a love-hate relationship with the Grouse Grind. I can go to work every day. I can dream. I can live. Thanks to Dr. Frederick Banting and Charles Best. Insulin is not a cure, not even close, but it has given me, and thousands of others like me, life. So, for my parents, my siblings, my husband, my friends, myself, I give thanks to Banting and Best from the bottom of my healthy heart. And apparently I wasn’t the only one giving homage to Canada’s superheroes on World Diabetes Day, which also happened to be Banting’s birthday. Have you seen Canada’s new polymer $100 bill that was unveiled? Front and centre, an old-school insulin vial. Good job, Canada. Katie Bartel is a reporter with the Chilliwack Progress.

letters Thinking needs to change I am sure that the old guard at city hall who got re-elected spent the evening congratulating themselves on a job well done. Well, from where I sit, it should have been a night of introspection for the majority of them. The voters in Abbotsford sent a resounding warning to its elected officials – we don’t trust you. To prove that point, we have a new mayor and the water project was not only defeated, it was crushed – a project that almost all the old guard supported. Was it the best plan? Maybe, but because it was being sold so

hard by the old guard, the residents of this town didn’t believe it. It is not the people of Abbotsford who made the mistake of voting no, it is the elected officials whose old way of thinking needs to go. Plan A and the Heat are topics that council has supported and have been a disaster in this community. So why would the water be any different? When questioned about these topics, the arrogance from many of our elected officials was sickening. The people in Abbotsford don’t think you have the best interests of this

town at heart and don’t believe the decisions you are making are good. Unfortunately, in civic politics there are just too many unknown names for real change to take place. Gaining a seat at city council is like winning the lottery, or at least like being an appointed senator – who cares how crappy a job you do, you still get paid and unless you die or quit, you aren’t getting replaced. There were many candidates running that should have been at the table, but unfortunately, people are afraid of change. They would

rather hang with the devils they know than the one they don’t. I wish our new mayor well, and I hope the old council starts to act in the best interest of the people of Abbotsford and find ways to reduce taxes, increase efficiencies and run this city like a business and not a public-funded trough where you think that you can continually come to businesses and homeowners to pay for everything. I know that that is not an easy thing for a council that has been made up primarily of retired school teachers, university professors and public service employees. Neal Diamond

Gouged on event tickets I adamantly voted no against the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, yet I continually do my part to help pay off its debt by purchasing tickets for events that take place there. In my latest ticketpurchasing experience, I had the pleasure of being offered 20 per cent off my tickets during a special pre-sale, only to be blind-sided by a myriad of ticketing fees. Each of my four

tickets was subject to a $2.75 facility fee and a $5 item fee. Next, I received a $3.50 order charge, and a $2 print-athome charge, the latter of which was chosen for me by the obviously American man who was helping me over the phone (don’t even get me started on the fact

that we are employing Americans). In buying four tickets for an entertaining evening spent supporting my home town, I was subjected to $36.50 in fees alone. Not only are my tax dollars being used to pay off the arena (and the Heat), but I am also being gouged almost $10 per ticket

(on top of the ticket price!) to support and attend events held in an arena that I was not in support of in the first place. Hopefully under the leadership of a new mayor, taking your family to the AESC won’t cost you your grocery money for the week. Wendy Pronick

I’m so proud of the people of Abbotsford for using their common sense in the face of a shameful and immoral spending of tax dollars on this biased campaign. What the incumbent council gambled on using to get them elected (P3) proved their own undoing. We clearly needed fresh thinking on this council. New council, prove us right to have given you our trust. No more wasteful spending. Terry Schulz

million to build the facilities. They pointed out that Abbotsford’s Indo-Canadian population rose to almost 20 per cent in the 2006 census, and noted they have been tax-paying members of the community for a century. Cremation is an important part of funeral ceremonies in the Sikh and Hindu religions, and large processions with hundreds of guests mean that local people from these faiths travel to other communities, often Surrey, for their services. Local private facilities and the crematorium in Mission cannot accommodate large crowds. A crematorium at Hazelwood was part of the civic cemeteries master plan which was adopted by city council in 2007. That same year, council gave the plan approval in principle, but voted it down in 2008 regardless. Baljinder Bains, a member of the Fraser River Crematorium Society, was one of those addressing council in 2008. He said the new crematorium plan is the result of 10 years of work by organizers, and there were other groups tackling the issue even before that. “It’s very important. The time when someone dies is a critical time.” He said the group is happy with their new location. It offers 1.7 acres, and can provide adequate parking. The building will be large enough to house two assembly halls, allowing two simultaneous services of 550 people. The new property has the correct zoning, meaning the crematorium committee will not have to seek council approval or go through public meetings. The facilities will generally be used on weekends and long weekend statutory holidays. The crematorium is a partnership of all of Abbotsford’s Sikh temples, the Abbotsford Hindu temple and the Mission Sikh temple, but Bains said the entire community will be invited to book it for funeral services. The facility is expected to open as soon as summer 2012.

Dispute involves machete Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A disagreement between two teens resulted in one hitting the other with a machete on Sunday afternoon. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the dispute between the the 16- and 17-yearold boys began over repairs to an all-terrain vehicle they had been riding the day before on a property in the 5000 block of Lefeuvre Road. The vehicle broke down, and the

owner wanted to know who was responsible for the repairs. The teens were arguing over the issue in an outbuilding on the property, and the younger boy swung a machete, first hitting a wall and then striking the hand of the 17-year-old, MacDonald said. The boy was treated in hospital for a three-inch gash to the top of his hand. The 16-year-old was found by police on a property in the 1600 block of Bradner Road. He now faces charges of assault with a weapon.

THANK YOU! Thank you Abbotsford for your vote of confidence in electing me to city council.

The grin was ear to ear, said her mother, Montana, adding that she hadn’t seen Cheyann that happy in a long time. Cheyann, 6, was diagnosed with leukemia at age five. After a year and a half of chemotherapy, she is now finally in mainte-

nance (the first stage of recovery). But some of the new medication affects her mood. So when Montana explained that Disney On Ice was inviting her daughter to the Toy Story 3 show, she was elated to see Cheyann “jumping off the walls. Pink wand in hand, Cheyann watched the show, the intensity peaking when Mickey and the cast came out. Asking her parents how the characters got there, they explained they took a special

trip from Disneyland. Cheyann’s request for the Make A Wish Foundation is to go to Disney World. The family is planning the trip in the new year. Commenting on Cheyann’s recovery, Montana said, “She’s on her way. But in actual fact, it’s harder for her to get anywhere. Staying home from school last week, it was good for her to get out of the house, her mom said. Cheyann’s medication makes her tired.

With her family, Cheyann Taylor focuses intently on the show. But her fatigue didn’t stop her from sharing the excitement. She called her teacher Patti Evans on the weekend to tell her details about the Friday event. Among her favourite parts – the green aliens dancing on their knees and Barbie’s performance. Sitting with her

mom, step-dad and little brother, it was a family night out. “She was in awe seeing everyone. On Sunday she asked for more family time, Montana said. The Disney On Ice Toy Story 3 show ran Nov. 18-20 at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.

‘Taking over’ Climbing the music charts

Melissa WELSH Abbotsford News

She’s been travelling to big cities like Toronto and Montreal for the last seven months, preparing for upcoming shows at Much Music and YTV, yet Victoria Duffield is most excited to come back to Abbotsford and perform in her hometown. The 16-year-old has a high profile in the community, singing at annual Canada Day celebrations, and other community events. In school hallways, friends have stopped to say they heard her new single, “Shut Up and Dance,” on the radio. It’s been a whirlwind for the songstress, who’s been singing and dancing since the age of seven. Duffield was signed with Warner Music Canada last May, and has since worked with noted producers and choreographers. Most recently, Duffield collaborated with So You Think You Can Dance judge Luther Brown in creating a music video for her first released single. Being a finalist on YTV’s The Next Star in 2010, a reality show for young singers filmed in Toronto, helped Duffield get noticed. While her excitement about her growing national success is appar-

I don’t get that very often.” Going from open mike nights, to then booking her own gigs, the starlet worked hard to promote herself and never lost sight of her goal of “taking over the music industry.” Now as a signed artist, Duffield Continued on A19

But having Warner backing me, it makes me feel that this actually happening.” Since being released, her single has made the Top 20 Countdown on Much Music, and her music video was in the Top Ten Hottest

Singing of hope Melissa WELSH

THE BEST JUST GOT

Abbotsford News

A local band hopes its Christmas carol spreads more than just holiday cheer this season. Members of Topaz have recorded the song “Give Them Hope,” and are selling copies in order to raise funds for the food banks in Abbotsford and Mission. Written by students of the Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts – Michael Fox, Natasha Stobbe and Abram Thiessen – the song highlights the hardships of Christmas. Empty cupboards, and layoffs are depicted in the verses, amongst the festivities of shopping and carollers. “The idea is to use music to help raise public awareness of how challenging Christmas can be for those in society who are struggling financially. The message is that we can all help make a difference by giving the gift of hope,” said Scott Boyes, who sings and plays bass and acoustic guitar. Playing for over 30 years, Topaz has performed as the opening act for Merritt Mountain Music Festival, the BC Lions Street Party, and big names like George Canyon and Edgar Winter. Following the Christmas tree lighting in Abbotsford on Dec. 4, the country and blues band will perform at the Abbotsford Food Bank. Copies of the CD can be found at Abbotsford Community Services at 2420 Montrose Ave, Baby Blossom Boutique at 2623 Montrose Ave, Clayburn Gourmet Gallery at 320-3033 Immel St, and First Nails Salon 6-32330 South Fraser Way. The band is asking for a minimum donation of $2.

District considers more Punjabi classes

Vikki HOPES

Abbotsford News

The Abbotsford school district is now formally looking into the possibility of offering more Punjabi language classes at local schools.

The program is currently offered at Rick Hansen Secondary; Eugene Reimer Middle School; Dave Kandal, Blue Jay and Harry Sayers elementaries; and Abbotsford Virtual School. In April 2010, a group of

parents asked that the district expand the program, saying it was warranted due to Abbotsford’s high IndoCanadian population. At that time, parent spokesman Balbir Gill said many students learn Punjabi at home,

but many don’t know how to read and write in the language. Signatures from 105 parents were obtained in support of expanding the offerings. The board of education agreed at its regular public meeting on Monday to have staff look fur-

ther into the matter, including the potential demand, the pros and cons, and the long-term viability of program expansion. The board has asked that the review be completed by February.

port two worthwhile community organizations: the Christmas Bureau and the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley, which provides shelter to women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. “Both the Christmas Bureau and the Women’s Resource Society desperately need the funding this event provides to allow them to offer the much-needed services they provide to people throughout the valley,” said John Agnew, founder and producer of the benefit concert. This year, organizers have set their goal at $30,000, and thanks to the support from two new sponsors, Fraser Valley Building Supplies and Prospera Credit Union, they are well on the way. Agnew says he’s excited about the move to Saturday. He promises a bit of something for everybody’s tastes. There will be old Christmas favourites, a little country, blues, rock and roll, and jazz from several of the best entertainers and groups in the Valley, including 1066, Horizon and Topaz, to name a few. The concert has been sold out in the past, and now that it has moved to Saturday night, tickets should move quickly. Tickets are $15 for adults, seniors and students, and $10 for children 12 and under. Agnew said all revenue goes directly to the two charities. Tickets are available in Abbotsford at the House of James, at 2743 Emerson St., and in Mission at London Drugs, Rex Cox Men’s Wear, Murdoch’s Book Shoppe, and Shoppers Drug Mart. The 2012 Ram 1500 today was named the "Best Half-Ton Pickup Truck" by the Canadian Truck King Challenge team. The announcement follows a few days of intensive real world truck evaluations with the focus on fuel consumption and capabilities. The testing included 8,000 lb (3,629 kg) of towing; 1,800 lb (817 kg) of heavy payload and some off-roading performed by the Truck King Challenge judges in Central, Ontario. “The testing performed by the Truck King Challenge is a great third party evaluation of the highly competitive half-ton truck segment and we are thrilled that our Ram 1500 took top honours,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO, Chrysler Canada. “The Ram 1500 is the most awarded Ram truck ever and has the longest lasting line of pickups in Canada. It’s no coincidence that more Canadian pickup buyers are switching to Ram 1500 than to any other truck.”

In addition to the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 which produces 390 hp (283 kW), 407 lb.-ft. (548 N•m) of torque and 20 mpg, the 2012 Ram 1500 offers a flex-fuel capable 4.7-liter V-8 providing 310 horsepower (231 kW) and

330 lb.-ft. (447 N•m) of torque, and a 3.7-liter V-6 generating 215 horsepower (160 kW) and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque; five and six-speed automatic transmissions; part-time and on-demand fourwheel-drive transfer cases; and 3.21, 3.55, 3.92 and 4.10 axle ratios. Equipped with the HEMI, the 2012 Ram R/T regular-cab 4x2 model with a short bed and 4:10 gears blasts from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. The 2012 Ram 1500 is offered in regular cab, Quad Cab and Crew Cab models, with three box lengths: 8-foot (regular cab), 6-foot4-inches (regular cab and Quad Cab), and 5-foot-7-inches (Ram 1500 Crew Cab). Eleven trim levels are available, each with a unique appearance: Tradesman, Express,

Outdoorsman, ST, SLT, Sport, Sport R/T, Lone Star, Big Horn, Laramie and Laramie Longhorn. The 2012 Ram 1500 Crew Cab, Quad Cab and short bed Reg cab features an available first-in-segment RamBox cargo management system that provides weatherproof, lockable, illuminated and drainable storage compartments integrated into both fender sides for effortless access and convenience. Each box holds up to 140-12-ounce beverages. The RamBox system includes a bed divider/2-foot bed extender for oversize loads and a rail system with sliding, adjustable cleats for infinitely adjustable tie-down capability. The Ram’s tailgate features a standard assist feature that reduces the effort needed to

raise and close the tailgate. Another segment-first innovation for the Ram 1500 crew cab is a pair of “store in the floor” bins with removable liners that offer even more versatile storage—large enough for ten 12-ounce beverages and ice. Locking lids are available from Mopar. In addition to the exterior, the interior of the 2012 Ram 1500 stands out with an emphasis on craftsmanship expressed in premium interior appointments including six-ring instrumentation, controls, chrome accents, premium seating with bolsters and twotone upholstery. An automatictransmission floor shifter, incorporated into a configurable center console, is available. All

Ram 1500 interiors feature “softtouch” materials with premium fit and finish. Full-width contrasting stitching is offered on soft-touch instrument panels for select models. On the exterior, the Ram 1500 features an aluminum hood with a large power bulge and a forwardcanted grille, imparting a “head down, ready to charge” attitude, while front and rear bumpers wrap around each body side. The rear bumper on HEMI-equipped models is radiused over chromed dual exhaust tips. Attractive 20inch wheels are available. Sills are pulled down to cover frame rails for a premium appearance. Badges are three-dimensional, rather than decals, and are designed to stand out.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Goalie wins AHL player of week as Abbotsford goes 6-1 on road trip Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

Wading through all the impressive numbers Abbotsford Heat goalie Leland Irving has compiled this season, one stands out above the rest. It’s not his 13 victories or his three shutouts, though both totals lead the AHL. And it’s not his goals against average (1.94) or his save percentage (.927), though he ranks fourth and 10th in the league in those respective categories. No, the number that truly sets Irving apart is his 1,022 minutes played, another league-leading total which represents a significant outlier. Only two other AHL goalies

trip, and his steady play was a primary reason Abbotsford emerged with a sterling 6-1-0-0 record on the jaunt. Overall, Irving has started 18 of the Heat’s 19 games this season, and he merits a great deal of the credit for the fact his team sits in first place in both the West Division and Western Conference with a 13-5-1-0 record. With 27 points, they’re also tied for first overall in the AHL with the St. John’s IceCaps, though the Winnipeg Jets’ affiliate has one game in hand. Irving was recognized on Monday as the AHL’s player of the week after

It wasn't so long ago that the University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams were where the UBC-Okanagan Heat find themselves right now – as firstyear CIS programs trying to find their way in the tough Canada West conference. But while the Cascades might be able to empathize, there was little mercy afforded the guests from Kelowna at the Envision Athletic Centre on the weekend. The UFV squads, now in their sixth season of Canada West participation, crushed the new kids on the block – the men beating UBC-O 74-52 on Friday and 108-63 on Saturday, and the women prevailing by scores of 81-53 and 71-50.

Suspect ball security cost the Rick Hansen Hurricanes a golden opportunity to advance to the provincial AA high school football semifinals, as they dropped a 16-12 decision to the Vernon Panthers at UBC on Friday. The ’Canes dominated the game in terms of yardage GILL gained and time of possession, and the defence surrendered just one Vernon drive of any consequence, which resulted in a field goal. But the Hurricanes turned the ball over five times, including two fumbles that were returned for touchdowns by the

could,” Panthers coach Jay Fujimura said. “But then the floodgates opened on a couple of our turnovers, and the score got a little lopsided.” Despite the loss, it’s still been a terrific season for the Panthers, who finished second in the AA Eastern Conference and earned their first playoff berth since resurrecting the football program four years ago. Q The W.J. Mouat Hawks were set to face the Kelowna Owls on the road Saturday in the AAA quarter-finals, but that game was wiped out due to heavy snowfall in the Okanagan. The game was rescheduled to Monday afternoon at Mouat, but the score was unavailable at press time. In junior playoff action, the Mouat Grade 10 squad lost 39-20 last Thursday to No. 1-ranked and undefeated St. Thomas More of Burnaby.

Abbotsford Pilots drop two of three On Friday at MSA Arena, Jarrett Martin's power-play goal at 12:05 of the third period gave the Pilots a 3-2 lead on the Delta Ice Hawks. But the visitors rallied for a 4-3 win, behind late goals from Cody Fidgett and John Proctor.

JOHN BARSBY 40, ABBY COLLEGIATE 6 The Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers also saw their season come to an end in the AA quarter-finals, falling 40-6 to the top-ranked and undefeated John Barsby Bulldogs. The Panthers hung tough with the heavily favoured Bulldogs in the early going, trailing 14-6 at halftime after quarterback Carter Williams passed to Jesse Neufeld for a major in the second quarter. But Barsby pulled away after the break. “They kept grinding us down, and we held out as long as we

UFV men shoot 64 per cent in blowout win From A31

Abbotsford News file photo

Sam Freeman shot 4-for-5 from beyond the threepoint line in UFV’s big win on Saturday over UBC-O.

The men's game on Saturday was most illustrative of the experience gap between the two programs. After turning in a mediocre offensive performance in Friday's opener, the Cascades executed to perfection in the rematch – they built a 30-point lead in the second quarter and expanded it from there. Jasper Moedt, with 18 points, led six Cascades in double figures, including Joel Friesen (17), Kyle Grewal (15), Sam Freeman (14), Jordan Blackman (12) and Mike James (10). UFV, ranked No. 9 in the nation, shot a scorching 64.4 per cent from the field and 12-for-18 from

beyond the arc as they improved to 5-1 on the season. "They're in a tough situation," Cascades coach Bar naby Craddock said, reflecting on UBC-O's trial by fire after moving from the college to the university ranks. "It's a very competitive league." The UFV women also won by comfortable margins to improve to 4-2, but head coach Al Tuchscherer wasn't all that impressed in the aftermath. "I've been banging my head against the wall the last couple of weeks, trying to get our chemistry going," he said, pointing to his team's shooting percentages this season

– 36.2 from the field and 23.3 from three – as an area of concern. "We're doing some good things, but we're

Heat home this weekend vs. Rampage the week ending Oct. 30. With another successful road trip in the rear-view mirror, the Heat now lead the AHL in road wins, having won 11 of 13 dates away from home. Quizzed as to why the Heat have been so good on the road, Irving offered a reasonable theory. “On the road, in some ways, I think there’s less pressure,” he said. “You don’t always feel
