Clerk beaten and cut in store robbery
CHARITIES PREPARE Salvation Army looking to raise $500,000 this Christmas season A5
Police arrest 18-year-old suspect a few hours later
Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A robber who brutally attacked a female clerk at an Abbotsford convenience store on Sunday night was arrested shortly after the incident. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the 18-year-old man is now considered a suspect in three previous robberies, all
occurring in less than a week. Police were called to the latest incident just before 6:30 p.m. A passerby heard screams coming from Granny’s Market in the 3500 block of Gladwin Road. The woman entered the business, causing the suspect to flee, and police were called to the scene. Surveillance video showed the suspect
running across the parking lot, entering the store, leaping across the counter and attacking the 51-year-old clerk. The robber repeatedly punched the woman in the face and cut her with the knife he was wielding. “This poor woman didn’t even have a chance to do anything,” MacDonald said. Continued on A7

Charities gear up Christmas donations fund year-round services Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
The local Salvation Army has seen similar client numbers this year compared to 2010, but the public relations director says expenses have gone up. Some programs and services have been added, said Deb Lowell, while existing programs have faced increasing costs, resulting in a need for more money. The agency has set a $500,000 goal for its Christmas fundraising campaign, compared to $475,000 last year. The funds raised by the Sally Ann during the holiday season support the organization year-round. But Lowell said fewer people are donating cash, choosing for example, to give an in-kind donation such as food. “People are still giving, but they’re giving in different ways,” she said. The Salvation Army’s main fundraising source at this time of year is the red kettle campaign, starting Dec. 1. Kettles will be set up at 10 locations in Abbotsford and three in Mission, with all funds remaining in those com-

The public is invited to remove a paper angel from the tree and purchase a new unwrapped gift for the child listed. Lowell said gifts for about 1,200 children are expected to be donated this year. Among the services provided by the Salvation Army year-round are a meal centre, emergency shelter, referrals to community resources, counselling, and supportive independent living. The agency deals mainly with single people and couples without children, while families are handled by the Abbotsford Community Services’ Food Bank, which operates as the Christmas Bureau at this time of year. Co-ordinator Dave Murray was not available for comment before press deadline, but the bureau holds a Christmas campaign to raise funds for year-round services. These include food hampers for families in need, an onsite dental clinic, mentoring, school supplies, financial management workshops and more. At Christmas, the bureau provides

Value in municipal A-G
Premier Christy Clark’s announcement that a municipal auditor-general will be appointed is good news for taxpayers, and it could be helpful to municipalities as well, should they choose to adopt a conciliatory approach. When Clark suggested this new office, many mayors and councillors condemned it, stating that their expenditures were already audited. This is disingenuous. Yes, their books are audited‚ but a year-end audit by an accounting firm is far different from specific performance audits of specific programs. Year-end audits pronounce judgment on general financial management, and rarely single out specific programs. On rare occasions, auditors will include a note about a specific program that raises some questions, but it is not part of their job to follow up. A municipal auditor-general should be able to follow up on some of those types of “flagged” issues, as well as
issues that are raised by taxpayers. Some of these may revolve around specific programs, particularly ones where accountability is less than transparent. If municipalities accept the reports and advice from the new municipal auditor-general, it could go a long way towards improving their financial management. It will also help them to be more accountable to taxpayers. The new legislation being proposed has one major flaw. It does not give the new officer the power to audit TransLink, which is a separate corporation, albeit largely under the political oversight of Lower Mainland mayors. There were suggestions in the municipal election campaign that TransLink needs to be restructured again. If that does take place, there needs to be provision for either the provincial or municipal auditor-general to have the ability to regularly examine TransLink’s delivery of services to the public. – Black Press
The routine returns, a few weeks late Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand It’s good to be back in the saddle … a place I probably should have been for the past six weeks instead of flirting with political ambition. This is the first autumn in I don’t know how long that I haven’t been in the northern Cariboo following ungulates of various order. When I say ‘in the saddle’ I truly do mean in a saddle, on a horse, chasing cows. But instead I spent the latter part of October and most of November chasing votes, to which it appears I was particularly unsuited. I did not have an ‘internet presence’ … no website, and thus those who don’t read the newspaper had no idea who I was. Such was my folly. But when I look at the numbers that came out of this past election,
the result wasn’t about anything that most assumed would turn the tide. The water referendum, other than failing massively, did not factor into the decisions made by the one-third or so who actually voted. Neither did Plan A, the Heat contract, escalating taxes or anything else. If they had, none of the incumbent councillors would have been returned to office, yet they all did. Even Mayor George Peary lost by fewer than 50 votes a poll. This election was not a massive rejection of the way our city is being run. In fact, save the mayor’s defeat, it was mostly an affirmation that everyone seems to be happy with the way it is. I find that hard to believe, but then I wasn’t elected, so at this point I’m not going any further on the subject. Actually over the past few days, following that major windstorm we all experienced, I’ve been busy putting to great use all the election signs I collected up. The wind ripped the canvas roof
off my woodshed. It now has a new covering made of my smiling face, perforated many times by roofing nails. Better than darts, launched by others perhaps. I also know the world has returned to normal when, beside
This election was not a massive rejection of the way our city is being run. the coffee pot this morning was a ‘to-do’ list: rake the leaves, clean out the gutters, tidy the garage . . . the usual stuff I am commanded to do when time permits, and I can no longer avoid the home-based suggestions that putting off the inevitable is no longer acceptable, despite my thoughts of other more desirable activities. Neglecting to look at the calendar,
I had intended to escape for a few days into the wilderness, and last week a buddy suggested it might be a good time to take off into the mountains for a couple of days. I regretfully reminded him that the hills were now blanketed rather deeply in snow, which not only makes travel into the boonies a tad difficult, but camping downright uncomfortable. And if I needed other reminders of the time of year, Christmas carols now dominate the airwaves on the truck radio and Shaw’s ‘fireplace’ on the TV makes the point that the world is a different place anywhere outside the low portions of the Fraser Valley. But despite the warm sun shining as I write this, a nasty northeaster is but a weather system away and even here in the banana belt, winter will come upon us soon enough. Then, perhaps, a get-away will occur, but it won’t be in the truck and it certainly won’t be to anywhere snow might fall.

letters Community builder There are just not enough words to describe the impact of Lynne Harris on this community. Lynne was a community builder and advocate. When our children can enjoy the multifacetted playgrounds, access to a good schools and community facilities or a community event like Canada Day, we can thank Lynne for her hard work in making these things happen. Over the years, she worked tirelessly, quietly and with full energy to make this a community worth living in. Lynne didn’t only think about good ideas, but she worked hard to make them happen. She emulated humble servant leadership, and did not do things because of a pay cheque or to get her name in the headlines. Thank you, from someone who worked with you on council. I appreciate you and will miss you in your leadership role. Enjoy the next stage of your life. Mary Reeves (former Abbotsford mayor)

the world happy. Samaritan’s Purse plans to distribute 75,000 boxes from Canada in Haiti this year. That country has had more than its share of tragedy recently as a January 2010 earthquake killed 230,000 people and left 1.6 million homeless, a hurricane caused flooding, and a cholera epidemic has killed close to 4,000 people. The deadline has passed for boxes to be picked up at local dropoff points, but people can still contribute online, through the website http://www. samaritanspurse.ca.
The Importance of Being Earnest Locals encouraged to audition for new play If you are between the ages of 17 and 65, you are invited to attend the casting call for Gallery 7 Theatre and Perfor ming Arts’s production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. The satirical play explores Victorian morals and manners, with a twist that has the two lead male roles assuming alternate identities, and winning the favour of two women through their disguised charm and wit. Directing is the theatre’s artistic director, Ken Hildebrandt. “There are outstanding roles for both men and women. This play poses some fun challenges, especially in terms of language and character.” The show will run March 9-10, 15-17, and 22-24, with matinees on March 10 and 17. Rehearsals begin Jan. 4 on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Auditions, rehearsals and performances will be at the MEI Theatre at 4081 Clearbrook Rd. Convicted of stabbing wife nine times Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A Mission man had an appeal of his firstdegree murder conviction dismissed in the B.C. Court of Appeal in Vancouver on Tuesday. Jamie Robert Kokotailo, 47, was convicted by a jury in August 2009 of fatally stabbing his wife, Lori Lynn Elaine Kokotailo on Dec. 1, 2002. It was his second trial, after his first conviction in 2005 was overturned and a new trial ordered. Kokotailo received an automatic life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years. At his latest appeal hearing, Kokotailo’s lawyer argued that the judge in the second trial failed to give proper instructions to the jury regarding the issue of intent. The judge in that trial inferred that “sane and sober persons intend the natural and probable consequences of their acts, according to court documents. “His (Kokotailo’s) principal argument is that such an instruction should not be given when an accused is unable to recall what his or her intention was at the relevant time. Kokotailo has maintained that he was provoked by his wife and didn’t know what he was doing at the time of the stabbing. Lori was stabbed nine times in the bedroom of the couple’s Tanaka Terrace home in Mission. Portions of the incident were witnessed by two of her four daughters. Lori was killed the night she returned from Seattle, where she was having an affair that Kokotailo said he had found out about the day before through an email he discovered. In his evidence, Kokotailo said he
wanted the marriage to continue and did not intend to kill Lori. He said he began to choke her when she made insulting remarks that enraged him, and testified that his next memory was of getting up off the floor and seeing her holding a diving knife. A struggle ensued, and Kokotailo said he then recalled seeing blood everywhere. He admitted stabbing her, but that he did not remember doing so. The Crown alleged that Kokotailo had known about the affair for several days prior to the incident, and had planned the murder. Duct tape, a baseball
A11
bat and the murder weapon found in the bedroom were pointed to as evidence of his intentions. A first-degree murder conviction requires proof that planning and deliberation were involved in the killing. The three-judge appeal court panel were in agreement that the trial judge did not err in his instructions to the jury, and the appeal should be dismissed. “Based on the charge as a whole, the jury would not have been left in any doubt that it was required to consider all of the evidence, said Justice David Frankel in the written ruling.

Abbotsford News
The University of the Fraser Valley would like to expand its Chilliwack-based theatre department, and is in the early stages of discussing and planning a new theatre in Abbotsford. “We would like to bring theatre courses and production to Abbotsford long-term,” said Leslie Courchesne, UFV’s director of marketing and communications. In the future, if the school accomplishes its goals, students at the Abbotsford campus will be able to major in English with a minor in theatre, she said. The UFV theatre department operates only from its Chilliwack campus, with approximately 50 students involved in programs. Courchesne wanted to clarify that UFV intends to maintain those programs, operating out of a 100-seat studio theatre and classrooms that are part of the new $40-million Canada Education Park. UFV put its performance theatre on Yale Road up for sale, but Courchesne said it will be leased back from the buyer for up to five years so productions can continue there as well. She said UFV also wants to stage more theatre productions in communities throughout the Fraser Valley. “We are in early, internal discussions about what a theatre in Abbotsford would be,” she said. “We are open to partnering.” She said there is space on the Abbotsford campus to build a theatre facility, but that has not been decided.

Yaris emphasizes driving and performance With the right size for drivers who need an agile and functional vehicle, the new 2012 Toyota Yaris Hatchback arrived this fall with sporty styling, class-leading safety features and improved fuel economy. “There is a lot of excitement in the subcompact category today, and the new 2012 Toyota Yaris is at the top of the list when it comes to combining value and fuel efficiency with style and fun,” said Mark Smith, General Manager at Sunrise Toyota “Today’s young, price-conscious shoppers want the complete package that the new Yaris offers: room for their friends and gear, along with a strong list of standard convenience and safety features.” The all-new Yaris features a remarkable attention to detail in the design and engineering of the
vehicle. From its smart, interior design and quiet, refined passenger cabin to its responsive driving dynamics, the 2012 Yaris Hatchback answers carshoppers’ demands for a no-compromise vehicle. Starting with nine standard airbags, the all-new Yaris offers an impressive array of safety features. In common with all Toyota vehicles, the Yaris features Toyota’s Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The new Yaris also features Smart Stop Technology, Toyota’s brake-override system, as standard. The new 2012 Yaris was designed for fun and functionality. Both three-door and five-door
models are powered by a 1.5-litre, 16-valve, fourcylinder DOHC engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), producing 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. The broad torque curve provides plenty of response for both manual transmission and automatic transmission vehicles. All Yaris CE, LE and SE models are available with a new four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, featuring a more compact, lighter-weight design and reduced friction for greater fuel efficiency. A smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models. Electric power steering provides good road feel at highway speeds while aiding low-speed parking manoeuvres.

ONLY FOR A LIMITED TIME. ONLY AT YOUR FORD STORE.
Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program is a great incentive for consumers looking to save on their next vehicle while responsibly recycling their old one. Since the program was first offered in 2009, Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program has retired more than 50,000 old vehicles. And now, in an effort to recycle even more, the program has been expanded to include 2005-model-year-or-older vehicles. So even more people can receive between $500 and $3000* in incentives towards purchasing or leasing our smartest, safest, and fuel-efficient Ford vehicles. Like the Focus, Fusion, and F-150. Even the award-winning Fiesta and Edge. Our goal is to replace as many older vehicles still on the road today with more fuel-efficient, lower-emission Ford cars, CUVs, SUVs, and trucks. And you can help. If it’s time to recycle your ride, just visit any Ford Store across the country. But hurry, because Recycle Your Ride is only back for a limited time.

Clothes that work.
In the wake of his team’s thrilling 14-13 win over Vancouver College in the B.C. AAA high school football semifinals on Saturday, W.J. Mouat Hawks coach Denis Kelly was left with a powerful sense of déjà vu. Back in 2005, in the provincial final against Van College, the game came down to a missed convert. In the fourth quarter, Mouat defensive lineman John Smeysters burst through the line to get a hand on Fighting Irish kicker Brody McKnight’s extra-point attempt, and it was the difference in a 7-6 Mouat victory. Fast forward to Saturday, and Van College appeared poised to level the score with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter, when fullback Liam Mahara dove into the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the one yard line. But Fighting Irish senior Justin Sanvido pushed his kick wide, allowing the Hawks to escape with a one-point win. Mouat moves on to the AAA title game for the third time in four seasons, and they’ll face the Mount Douglas Rams of Victoria at B.C. Place on Saturday at 7 p.m. “It was almost the exact same thing,” marveled Kelly, recalling that memo-
rable ’05 title game. “It wasn’t pretty . . . but what the heck – we’re in the final.” Playing in a steady drizzle at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium, the defences ruled. The two teams battled to a 7-7 stalemate in the first half, with the Hawks’ lone touchdown coming on a one-yard run by Devin Logan. When Vancouver College tried to stretch the field, Mouat’s defensive backs were up to the task, as Tanner Strauss and Nathan Henczel had interceptions to snuff promising drives. Henczel’s pick came early in the third quarter, and Mouat took over on their own 21 yard line. QB Daniel Markin led a methodical 79-yard march that ate up nearly six minutes of game time, and he eventually capped the drive with a six-yard TD scamper. In the fourth quarter, Markin threw a costly pick that gave the Irish great field position at the Mouat 34. That turnover yielded the Mahara TD plunge, but Sanvido missed the convert. Afterward, Kelly expressed sympathy for the VC kicker. “This must be heartbreaking,” the Mouat coach said. “He’s had such a good year and he’s such a great player.” Markin, recapping the crucial TD drive, noted that the Hawks got a lot of tough yardage on runs by Taylor Hinton and Maleek Irons. “It was frustrating at times, I tell you,” he said with a relieved grin. “It was back and forth, and we were playing bad. Our defence stepped it up, and we somehow got away with that win.” This Hawks football season has been marked by sorrow. In June, cancer claimed longtime Mouat equipment manager John “Opa” Smeysters. In July, former wide receiver Desmond Bassi – a recent graduate ticketed for Simon Fraser University – was killed in a hit-and-run accident. “We always eat a pregame meal (as a team), and we always put up a sign to remember Opa and Des,” Kelly said. “They’re always in our thoughts this season, and forever more, really. The kids played with that kind of passion.”

Heat humbled at home Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford Heat came into the weekend red-hot, but the San Antonio Rampage cooled them off in a hurry. The visitors from Texas swept a pair of games at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, crushing the Heat 5-0 on Friday and following with a 3-1 win Sunday. The defeats continued the Heat’s counterintuitive home/road split. They’ve been tremendous away from the AESC, winning 11 of 13 games, but they’re just 2-5-1-0 in Abbotsford. Sunday’s loss was their fifth in a row at home. “We just didn’t have the same intensity we had on the road,” Heat blueliner Joe Piskula said. “We got home here finally, and I think we were a little too comfortable with a good record on our hands.” The Heat were coming off a stellar road trip where they won six of seven games, but they fell flat Friday. The Rampage chased reigning AHL player of the week Leland Irving from the Heat net not once, but twice, and Abby head coach Troy Ward benched his ineffective top line of Ben Walter, Krys

Heat forward John Armstrong traded punches with San Antonio’s Eric Selleck on Friday. Kolanos and Guillaume Desbiens for more than half the game. “We got everything we deserved tonight,” Heat captain Quintin Laing said in the aftermath. “It was a humbling experience.” While the Heat gave away Friday’s game, they felt Sunday’s rematch was taken from them, to an extent. The pivotal moment came midway through the second period, when Kolanos scored an apparent powerplay goal that would have tied the score 1-1. But referee Mark Lemelin waved it off, ruling that Desbiens interfered with the goalie. Desbiens was irate, pointing repeatedly at the video replay screen, which seemed
to indicate the contact was minimal. The call was all the more baffling because Lemelin didn’t assess Desbiens a penalty on the play. Had the goal stood, it might have changed the complexion of the game – Laing scored just over two minutes later, which would have given the Heat a lead for the first time all weekend. But Rampage forward Bill Thomas got the game-winner at 6:56 of the third, and David Marshall scored a late insurance goal. The Heat, now third in the West Division at 13-7-1-0, head back out on the road for a fourgame jaunt, beginning Tuesday against the Milwaukee Admirals.

Luyken’s late free throw lifts Cascades past Pandas Dan KINIVG Abbotsford News
University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball coach Al Tuchscherer was disappointed with how his team responded in crunch time on Friday, as they let a
winnable road game slip away against the Saskatchewan Huskies. Twenty-four hours later, he couldn’t have been more pleased. The Cascades thrived under pressure on Saturday, grinding out a 68-67 upset victory over
the Alberta Pandas, the No. 5-ranked team in the nation. Aieisha Luyken played the hero, hitting one of two free throws with four seconds left to secure the win. “I thought the game was up for grabs against
Saskatchewan, and I didn’t think anybody did anything special to seize the opportunity,” Tuchscherer said, reflecting on the weekend. “We talked about that after the game, and I don’t know if Aieisha took that personally,
but she really stepped up in the fourth quarter against Alberta. She wasn’t going to let us lose.” Luyken finished with 11 points and four assists as the Cascades improved to 5-3 heading into the Christmas
break. On Friday, UFV had a 34-30 lead at halftime over the No. 6-ranked Huskies, but the hosts rallied to win 75-65. The UFV men’s hoopsters had a golden opportunity to earn a signature win of their

Joel Friesen had a big game in defeat with 29 points, including five three-pointers, on 10-of-17 shooting. The Cascades struggled the next night against Alberta, falling 79-57. They’re also 5-3.

When Allan Dicks found out in the preseason that the Vanier Cup was going to be held at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, it gave him an extra dose of motivation to help his McMaster Marauders get there. On Friday evening, that dream came to fruition, as Dicks – a W.J. Mouat Secondary grad – helped the Marauders to a thrilling 41-38 double-overtime win over the Laval Rouge et Or to clinch the CIS football championship. "It's nice to do it in front of friends and family," Dicks, a 19-year-old sophomore defensive back, told The News. "It hasn't even sunk in yet. You catch yourself thinking about it, and you almost c a n ' t believe DICKS you've won. It's unreal." Local football fans remember Dicks best as a running back, but since heading to Hamilton, Ont. to join the Marauders, he’s been used exclusively as a defensive back. He's made a seamless transition, and notched two interceptions this season. On Friday, the Marauders raced out to a 23-0 lead at halftime, only to watch Laval rally to take a 24-23 lead in the fourth quarter. But McMaster hung in, and ultimately prevailed on Tyler Crapigna's 20-yard field goal in double-OT. "It was stressful, very stressful," Dicks said with a chuckle. "A blowout would have been nice, but we can say we were part of one of the most exciting Vanier Cups in history."

RENPENNING (Maria) Irene April 1939 - November 2011 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Maria Irene Renpenning. Irene passed away in Abbotsford on November 11, 2011 at the age of 72 years. She is survived by her brother David (Lillian), nephew Darwin (Margo), niece Denise (Randy), 5 grandnephews, one grandniece and 2 great grand nephews. Irene was predeceased by her father, John Renpenning, mother, Elisabeth Renpenning and nephew, David A. Renpenning. Irene was born in Cuahtemoc, Mexico. In 1952 she moved to Clearbrook BC with her family. After living and working in Abbotsford for several years Irene moved to Williams Lake where she made many friends and worked in a variety of different businesses. Irene owned and operated Celebrations Plus where she spent many hours creating joy for others with her beautiful balloon arches and floral arrangements. Irene was fluent in English, Spanish and German. She loved to travel and have new adventures. Becoming very interested in Genealogy, she created a cherished Family Book as a legacy to her love of life and the importance of family. Irene will be remembered by her many friends and family as a feisty and hardworking woman that was loving, caring, generous, a gracious hostess and a marvelous cook and vintner. A celebration of Irene’s life will be held Tuesday, Nov. 29th 2-4pm at Silverwood Manor. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Salvation Army.
