Crystal Gala: ‘It was magic’ With a celebrity MC, a high-end auction and enthusiastic donors, the annual Crystal Gala breast cancer fundraiser brought in more than $140,000 on Saturday. “We had so much fun, and it was neat to have a little bit of star power this year,” said Crystal Gala committee chair Gerri Charles. The MC was Pamela Martin, longtime CTV British Columbia news coanchor. Health Minister Michael de Jong , the Abbotsford West MLA, also spoke, and was one of many local celebrities at the $200-per-plate fundraiser at the Ramada Inn. One of the highlights of the evening
was the live auctioning of the Man Cave, which included a 50-inch plasma TV, recliner, shag carpet, bottle of scotch, and a motorized cruise-in cooler that Charles drove into the banquet. It was purchased by Freda Nielsen, one of the members of the Women Presidents’ Organization of Vancouver which had a table at this year’s event, and whose members were generous supporters of the live auction. Nielsen bought the ‘man cave’ for $6,500. “That’s a nice wife,” noted Charles. Another high-bid auction item was a Conair flight to Vernon for a round at
Predator Ridge Golf Course and a stay at the Sparkling Hills Resort, which went for $3,000. “It was magic – people were so good to us,” said Charles. This year’s event was themed Taming the Dragon, featuring an Oriental dragon and the Lion Dancers of SFU. There were 400 people in attendance, and “The Ramada was bursting its beautiful seams,” said Charles. The event has been running since 1999 and has raised over $1 million. All funds raised go toward the Crystal Gala Breast Health Unit of the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.

Daleman, Coughlan join race for mayor
Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
The battle for the mayor’s chair has two more contenders – 17-year-old Travis Daleman and 32-year-old Meghann Coughlan. Daleman is one of the youngest candidates to run for political office in Canada. The local man will celebrate his 18th birthday DALEMAN on Oct. 26, making his candidacy for mayor legal, just in time for the Nov. 19 municipal election. A student at the University of the Fraser Valley, Daleman was motivated to run by the need for the younger genera-
tion to be involved in government, and hopes to draw attention of residents to the election and the local issues in Abbotsford. “I’m really interested in getting younger people to take an interest in local politics ... I’ve noticed a lot of students talking about issues and I’m really excited about that,” he said. He feels it’s important that people vote and would like to see more young people running for political office. “There’s always talk about getting new blood in council and in government, and that’s what I’m trying to do.” Coughlan has lived in Abbotsford since 1992. The mother of four is originally from Niagara Falls and has held a variety of positions including an internship with Aboriginal Initiatives for
the Correctional Services of Canada. Coughlan said on her website that if she is “not elected mayor, I will return to university to begin working towards my long-term goal of attaining my doctorate.” She also said she has a “passion to be a voice for the people of Abbotsford.” Daleman and Coughlan join current COUGHLAN mayor George Peary, Gerda Peachy and Bruce Banman as candidates for mayor. Watch for more council and school board candidacy coverage in upcoming issues of The News, and online at abbynews. com.

Policing plan backfires B.C. might have shot itself in the foot with Ottawa’s gun by threatening that municipalities were prepared to abandon the venerable RCMP and form a provincial force. The remarks, made recently by Langley’s Peter Fassbender, the Union of B.C. Municipalities’ observer in contract negotiations between the province and Ottawa, came as a reaction to what many consider an unpalatable policing deal with the Mounties. While the proposed 20-year contract for policing services throughout much of the province is indeed expensive and undesirable, the comments that we’ll take our gun and strike out on our own are somewhat premature. For one, we don’t even own the gun. In Nanaimo, taxpayers foot the bill for 90 per cent of all costs to have the RCMP police the community, yet all the city really owns is the building out of which the officers are based. Everything else, from the guns and handcuffs to the cruisers and comput-
ers, ultimately belong to Ottawa. Despite the threat to form B.C.’s own force, it appears no one has really done the homework on how feasible that really is. No one is presenting any numbers that show what starting a provincial force would cost, nor how it would save us money and hassle in the longterm. Solicitor General Shirley Bond called it a “very expensive, very challenging” prospect. In other words, we can’t afford it and probably can’t figure out how to do it. It’s no surprise then that Ottawa called B.C.’s bluff recently, issuing an ‘ultimatum’ that we either sign the contract or the Mounties will march into the sunset. Next time, before we go off making threats half-cocked, perhaps we should make sure we’re not taking aim at our own boots and the gun isn’t about to backfire. – Black Press
Discrimination starts a slippery slide Tricia

My View Here we go again. Let’s target the smokers. Last month, Health Minister Mike de Jong floated the idea of charging smokers extra MSP premiums – though the idea was quickly opposed by Premier Christy Clark. But while de Jong goes after smokers, he’s apparently not considering charging obese people, who pose an ever-increasing drain on the health care system – a drain that is fast overtaking the threat smokers pose to health care. Or pot smokers, coke snorters, heroin addicts, meth heads or alcoholics. What about people who participate in extreme sports? Some doctors call motorcycle owners ‘organ donors’ … you still ride your motorbike, Mike?
De Jong attempts to use the excuse that smokers should take responsibility for their actions. He’s right. But what about all of the above? Should they not also take responsibility for their actions? He suggests smokers should contribute more. They already do. About $3.70 per pack – in taxes. And each time those taxes were raised – several times in recent years – the government said those funds would go toward the smokers’ drain on the health care system. It would be interesting to find out exactly where all those tax dollars go. Too bad government can’t tax marijuana or cocaine or meth or ecstasy. What taxes do obese people currently pay toward their expanding pull on health care dollars? What do heroin addicts currently contribute? Racecar drivers and motocross athletes? Heck, even our hockey-playing population should probably con-
tribute more, with all the injuries that send players to B.C. emergency rooms every year. Not just the pros, either. You still play hockey, Mike? Bottom line is, it’s discrimination.
Thing is, once you start with the smokers, where does it end? Perhaps other addicts will be atargeted first. And likely just another government money grab. Gotta find the money to repay the federal government because de Jong’s Liberals brought in a tax they said they wouldn’t bring in before the election, right? Gotta pay back for something no one wanted in the first place – and they proved that at the polls. Maybe the Liberals should put out
more attack ads saying their opponents are untrustworthy. Thing is, once you start with the smokers, where does it end? Perhaps other addicts will be targeted first. But once one personal choice is attacked, it opens the door to all personal choices being attacked. No one wants that. Or things like invasive health checks to ensure whether people are actually smokers or not … or is it just the honour system? If so, effective much? De Jong would be wise to drop such a discriminatory idea and focus on being safe on the road while he rides his motorcycle, a behaviour many believe is risky and irresponsible. Of course, donating organs would be a much better way to support the health care system than targeting addictive behaviour. Stat holidays cost employers
The announcement of Family Day, another statutory holiday in BC, has predictably met with widespread approval, especially by employees. Who wouldn’t want another day off with full pay? Let’s have at least one each month! And yet, there is another perspective. There is a major downside to adding another day to the nine current paid holidays, which do not include Easter Sunday, Easter Monday or Boxing Day which many employers also treat as if they also were statutory paid holidays. The cost on employers is high. A firm having 30 employees averaging $30 an hour for an eight-hour day suddenly, with the premier’s smiling an-
nouncement, becomes responsible for paying out $7,200 for precisely nothing in return. And the owner wasn’t even consulted! Beyond that, the owner also loses production and service for clientele. What about public employees? Take the case of the Fraser Health Authority. It has 26,000 staff members, not counting the 2,500 physicians. The FHA cannot close its hospitals and care homes for a day. It must continue with its operation, but thanks to this new regulation, it must now pay its hourly employees time and a half for working on a statutory holiday. This scenario takes in all of B.C.’s health care workers and all other civil servants and Crown agency employees,
such as ferry workers, police officers, firefighters and more. This additional holiday turns out to cost millions. There are many other additional costs. What about restaurants, hotels, gas stations, bus drivers, farm workers, and media personnel? The provincial economy produces less. And when employers close their firms for a day because they can’t afford to pay time and a half, the government gets less tax revenue. There may be justification for creating a paid Family Day. Some other provinces have done so, but we should at least be aware of the costs to employers, to taxpayers, and to the provincial economy. John H. Redekop
Hundreds of millions at stake
Water shortages do not happen overnight. This is something that develops over time and anyone who knows how quickly Abbotsford is growing should know that the availability of water could become an issue. So, why didn’t city council start thinking about this before it became a “crisis.” We all know that water supply is a priority. Why has council insisted on wasting millions of dollars supporting a Calgary hockey team, building a museum and cultural centre that
nobody I know has seen or has any interest in, putting up raspberry statues, etc? What happened to city planning and budgeting? My income is no longer keeping up with all these increases. Why does the mayor and council wait until the last minute and then expect us all to okay another tax hike when they can’t seem to control the spending of our tax dollars? Debbie Mendini

It concerns me that I do not know enough about the P3 water project to make an informed decision. Even more troubling, I wonder if Abbotsford council knows enough about it. The website created to promote the project makes it seem too easy. There is an answer for every question – at least every question the promoters want to answer. There seems to be a firm conviction that every possible problem has been considered and dealt with. But citizens have experience with contracts that have promised a lot and delivered headaches. The sewer contract with the City of Sumas almost delivered us into the hands of the infamous SE2 gas-fired power plant. Another example of a contract disappointment is our agreement with the Abbotsford Heat. Instead of generating money, it is burning it. Privatization of water is a multi-billion dollar business. All over the globe, cities have contracted water companies to operate their systems. In some cases, the companies are providing satisfactory service. According to Alex Prud’homme in The Ripple Effect, there have also been problems. Atlanta, Georgia cancelled its contract because people were “complaining of rate increases, brown water coming from their pipes, a dearth of maintenance, and terrible customer service.” Paris, France also took back control of its water system. In several cases, mayors have faced litigation and even prison time for accepting
bribes from water companies. Prud’homme reports that protests against the practises of water companies have sprung up in Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. Fredrik Segerfeldt of the Cato Institute, writing in the Financial Times, admitted that “many privatizations have been troublesome. Proper supervision has been missing. Regulatory bodies charged with enforcing contracts have been non-existent, incompetent or too weak. Contracts have been badly designed and bidding processes sloppy.” Private water companies have deep pockets. They can hire the most skilled lawyers. Also, they have plenty of experience in designing contracts that are to their benefit. Can our city compete at this level? My mind is still open concerning P3, but I’d like to know more about the 2009 report to the Abbotsford-Mission Water and Sewer Commission. According to Lynn Perrin of Water Watch, this report states that Abbotsford will have enough water until 2031. I’d also like to know how the city can assure us of the total cost, even though as yet there seems to be not even a hint of a contract. And then there is the matter of likely cost overruns. We may have to go somewhere other than the consulting firm, hired on our behalf with our tax dollars, to get beyond the easy answers. Art Martens

Prostitution is a “service” that thousands, maybe millions, of Canadians want. If it wasn’t, prostitutes would be out of business. We already have brothels. We call them massage parlors. And we have out-call services. Look in any newspaper classifieds. No amount of legislation will stop these practices. Keeping them illegal simply makes criminals out of millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens and puts the profits in the hands of gangs and criminals. It’s time for the government to accept, legalize, and tax these professions Greg Tyler

Obstruction charge NOTICE OF APPLICATIONS FOR SCRUTINEERS 2011 ASSENT OF ELECTORS (Other Voting – Referendum) On Saturday, November 19, 2011, qualified electors within the City of Abbotsford will be voting on the following question: Are you in favour of the City of Abbotsford developing a new water supply source at Stave Lake (consisting of a water intake in Stave Lake, a pump station, a water treatment plant and a water transmission line from the Stave Lake to the City of Abbotsford) to ensure that the current and long term water needs of the City of Abbotsford are met by: the City entering into a partnering agreement with a private sector partner that will design, build, partially finance and operate a water supply and distribution system from Stave Lake for up to thirty (30) years, incurring a maximum capital cost and liability to the City of TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY-ONE MILLION DOLLARS ($291,000,000)
YES
of which up to $61,000,000 will be paid for through a federal contribution; and Abbotsford City Council adopting Bylaw NO. 2105-2011, “Stave Lake Water System Loan Authorization Bylaw, 2011” to authorize the borrowing by the City of the remaining TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS ($230,000,000), for up to thirty (30) years, for the capital cost of constructing the water supply and distribution system from Stave Lake?
A charge of obstruction of justice has been recommended against Abbotsford Police Const. Nathan Brown, following an APD investigation into whether he crashed a police cruiser while impaired by alcohol. On April 14, Brown had authorization to drive an unmarked police vehicle home from work. On the way, he stopped at a facility run by the police union for use by its members, said APD Const. Ian MacDonald. Later, while driving home, the officer collided with a pole, causing moderate damage to the police vehicle. One aspect of the subsequent criminal investigation focused on how forthcoming the member was when he reported the incident to the APD. MacDonald said the APD forwarded the results of its investigation to Crown counsel, which determined to proceed with an obstruction charge, based on the discrepancies that existed between the facts of the event and the initial explanation provided by the officer. The Police Act investigation into the matter is continuing. Constable Brown remains suspended from duty. He has worked for the Abbotsford Police Department for four and a half years.

BC Hydro cuts 300 jobs, 150 more to come Tom FLETCHER Black Press
BC Hydro is moving ahead with its costcutting program, eliminating 300 positions this week and announcing 150 more will be gone in the next two years. BC Hydro CEO Dave Cobb gave few specifics about the type of positions being eliminated. He said the reductions were identified starting in January as the Crown utility prepared for a review of its operations ordered by incoming Premier Christy Clark. About 250 positions were phased out before this week, for a total reduction of 700. Cobb said most of the reductions are
through attrition, but there will be “some layoffs” to reach the number needed to limit rate increases as directed by the government review. Three deputy ministers reviewed BC Hydro operations and reported to Energy Minister Rich Coleman in August. Cobb and Coleman agreed to roll back the general rate increase to eight per cent this year and 3.9 per cent in each of the next two years. BC Hydro’s previous application to regulators was for a 9.73 increase in each of the three years. The Canadian Office and Professional Employees, one of BC Hydro’s two unions, says it is losing 400 meter reader positions as a result of BC Hydro’s installation of
wireless smart meters that automatically report consumption and power outages. The review endorsed BC Hydro’s business case for upgrading to smart grid technology. It focused on BC Hydro’s 650 staff engineers, and Coleman said the utility should be contracting out more engineering work. The review found overall staff grew by 41 per cent between 2006 and 2010. Speaking on radio Thursday, Cobb said he is examining procedures for engineering projects, but he’s not convinced of the need for reductions given the utility’s current array of major construction projects. Hydro Quebec has 1,700 engineers on staff, he said.

New drinking driving law unfair: Judge
Dan FERGUSON Black Press
An Abbotsford resident who says she was injured by an “aggressive” Langley RCMP officer during a drinking driving stop has won a victory in B.C. Supreme Court. In a written decision, Justice T. Mark McEwan ruled that the new law that
expands the police power to suspend a driver’s licence on the spot for suspected drinking was unfairly applied to Kristen Debra-Lee Spencer after she was pulled over by a Langley RCMP officer on Oct. 31, 2010. Spencer’s driving licence was seized and she was issued a 90-day suspension by
Langley RCMP Const. Veronica Steiger for refusing to blow into a breath alcohol testing device. Spencer filed a challenge of the suspension with the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, saying she never refused to blow, never told the officer she’d been drinking and could prove that she wasn’t

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 207 brand-owner members, 37 collectors and processors, 480+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.
Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than 1.3 million litres of used oil ends up in BC landfills every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore. BCUOMA is a non-for-profit organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers. Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.
Protecting our province from the harmful effects of used oil and antifreeze must be a responsibility we all share, together. So please, next time you look to dispose of used oil or antifreeze materials, find a collection facility near you. Here are three easy ways to do so:

stress. The adjudicator simply accepted officer Steiger’s claims as fact, the judge said, without subjecting them to the same level of scrutiny applied to Spencer. In the judgment, the adjudicator wrote “there is no reason for (Const.) Steiger to provide inaccurate evidence on this

point whereas you have a vested interest in the outcome of this review.” “That is a flat statement of bias,” Justice McEwan said. The judge ordered the case re-heard by a different adjudicator who will not grant the police what McEwan described as a “credibility advantage” over an ordinary citizen. The judge said the case raises serious questions about the fairness of the process, noting a person challenging a speeding ticket has a right to a hearing before a trained justice of the peace, while someone charged with the more serious offence of impaired driving does not. “The compelling social objective of removing drinking drivers from the road cannot justify a process that is incapable of reliably differentiating between those who have and those who have not offended,” the judge said. Spencer has also sued the Langley Mountie and the provincial Solicitor General, saying Const. Steiger didn’t explain why she was being pulled over, simply produced the device and ordered her to blow. In her statement of claim, Spencer says an “aggressive” Steiger did not tell her failing to immediately blow would be considered a refusal. When Spencer asked for an explanation, she said she was then told. When Spencer then offered to take the breath test, she says Steiger refused, telling her “that option is off the table.” The statement of claim, filed in Surrey Provincial Court, contains unproven allegations. The lawsuit seeks compensation for injuries allegedly suffered when Steiger cuffed Spencer and put her in the police cruiser, including a fractured bone in one hand, bruising, shoulder and neck injuries, and a broken tooth as well as “emotional and mental trauma.”

Dignity contributes to hospice facilities
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Bob King (left), president of the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show Society, and Eugene Klassen, chair of the Matthew’s House committee, pose in front of a classic Thunderbird.
Car show benefits youth For the third year in a row, proceeds from the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show have gone towards building Matthew’s House, a residence that seeks to provide long-term respite care for children and adolescents who live with a significant disability, while supporting and encouraging the families of these children. Matthew’s House welcomes children aged infant to 19 who struggle with physical and medical challenges that may limit their independence, as well as those who wrestle with terminal or life-limiting conditions.
This year marked the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show’s seventh year of operation, with four blocks of downtown dedicated to food, entertainment and the showing of locally owned, classic vehicles. Admission to this family-friendly event was free. Communitas Supportive Care Society said in a press release that it appreciates the continued, and increasing, support of the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show Society. Over the last three years, annual proceeds from the car show have grown from $6,000 to $10,000.
Over the last four years, through an annual golf tournament, Dignity Memorial has raised over $80,000 for hospice societies in Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Langley, Surrey and White Rock. At this year’s golf tournament on Sept. 20, Angelo Rea, area general manager of Dignity Memorial Funeral Homes, and Jayson Gordon, market director for B.C. and Alberta, presented a cheque for $31,715 for all six Fraser Valley hospice societies. “We, as a group of funeral homes, are pleased to give back to our community to support such a crucial service. Contributing to our community is the essence of Woodlawn and Henderson’s funeral homes,” said Rea, who is also the chair of the board of directors for the Abbotsford Hospice Society and serves on the
AHS capital campaign committee. A portion of the funds raised this year will benefit the construction of Holmberg House, the first adult hospice residence to be built in Abbotsford. Dave Holmberg Sr. said it meant a lot to his family. “My family is so grateful for the support given to us in our time of need when we lost our son, brother and husband, Dave Holmberg Jr. Hospice in any community serves the needs of people in their time of need so well, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to help secure these funds, a portion of which will go towards our family’s dream of completing Holmberg House.” More information can be found on Dignity Memorial at www.dignitymemorial.com.
Driving away hunger
Weighing food at a school stop during FCC Drive Away Hunger.
Farm Credit Canada (FCC) was travelling through Abbotsford recently in a drive to help local food banks. The FCC Drive Away Hunger tour ended its day with a total collection of 37,814 pounds, with donations still rolling in. The tour is a unique food drive that involves driving a tractor and trailer through communities to collect food and cash donations for food banks across the country. In Abbotsford, schools got involved in the drive, and were
major contributors. Of those assisted by a food bank each month, 30 per cent are children. FCC Drive Away Hunger is about making a difference in our communities by working together to help Canadian food banks feed people in need. Since 2004, the program has raised over 5.2 million pounds of food. Characters from the popular preschool TV show Big & Small perform at Clarke Theatre in Mission on Sunday, Nov. 27. Big & Small is a children’s television series that started in the United Kingdom in 2008 and is about two best friends who couldn’t be more dif-
ferent. Big is big, thoughtful and patient, while Small is small, loud and messy. Even though they are opposites, they always find a way to get along and have lots of laughs. Their concern for each other encourages preschoolers to
think beyond themselves, to be more aware of the different views around them, and learn to be more sensitive to others, says a press release. Joining Big & Small at the Mission show are a cast of characters including Ruby, Twiba, The Frogs and T-Rex.
The show starts at 6:30 p.m. at Clarke T heatre, 33700 Prentis Ave. Tickets are $24.50 (plus facility fees and service charges) and are available at all Ticketmaster locations, by phone at 1-885-985-5000 or online at ticketmaster.ca

Reach opens four shows simultaneously open at 5:15. Event starts at 5:45 p.m. About the shows: Punjabi Visions – This contemporary Punjabi-Sikh exhibition presented by The Reach is in celebration the 100th anniversary of the Khalsa Diwan Society Gur Sikh Temple in Abbotsford. Punjabi Visions brings together regional, national and international artists who explore the social memories and cultural heritages of the Punjabi/Sikh communities. The artists in this exhibition employ various visual strategies revealing original and unconventional approaches that are characteristic of some of Canada’s most divergent, rising visual artists. Randall Steeves: Somatic Evidence – Steeves’ thickly painted, scratched
and gouged paintings invite the viewer to reconsider the gesture of painting itself. The canvases explore the relationship between the photographic index and the painterly trace with a wry nod towards conceptual art practice. The subject of the canvases is, without exception, the fingerprint. Patrick Wood: Opstraction – Wood has been investigating the concept of Gestalt, abstraction, mathematics and patterning – all lend themselves to this poignant reference point. From prehistoric to modern times, civilizations have employed repetition and patterns as if conveying a secret language, mathematics or meaning. This investigation of pattern, colour and mathematics were the starting points for this series of paintings,

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Weekend split with Rockford, despite huge edge in shots Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
Hockey, much like life, is not always fair – a truth which the Abbotsford Heat discovered anew on Sunday afternoon. The Heat turned in their most dominant performance of the season, but sustained their first loss, falling 3-2 to the Rockford IceHogs at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. The hosts peppered IceHogs goalie Alec Richards with 33 shots, while surrendering just 13 against – a franchise-low total for Rockford. But the IceHogs capitalized on their rare scoring chances, and Richards stood tall between the pipes as Rockford salvaged a split of the two-game weekend series. “It was a good night in a lot of ways,” Heat head coach Troy Ward mused afterward. “I thought structurally we were good, I thought we did some nice things. But I didn’t feel a lot of emotion or passion with this particular 60 minutes.” Sunday’s game followed a simi-

As in the home opener, the Heat allowed the visitors to race out to a two-goal lead in the first period, with Jeremy Morin and Brandon Pirri doing the damage.
Other than those two breakdowns, the Heat owned the first period, but Richards was up to the task. Brendan Mikkelson finally got the Heat on the board at 4:18 of the second, hammering home a point shot on the power play.
Early in the third, the Heat had a golden chance to equalize, as Ben Walter was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway. It marked the second consecutive game the Heat had earned a penalty shot, but as with Lance Bouma’s attempt on
Friday, Richards came up with a huge stop, turning aside Walter’s blocker-side wrist shot. “To see them in back-to-back games is pretty rare,” Richards noted later. “But I’ve got confidence one-on-one with a guy, and the pressure’s on him.” Walter got his revenge just over a minute later, unleashing a wrist shot that went off the stick of IceHogs forward Brett McLean and floated over the shoulder of Richards to knot the score 2-2. The Heat continued to press, but Rockford’s Brandon Segal struck for the game-winner with 4:12 remaining. Brian Connelly lofted a high clearing attempt that landed in the skates of Abby defenceman Clay Wilson just inside his own blue line, but he was unable to settle the bouncing puck. McLean stole it, then dropped a pass to Segal, who ripped a shot just under the crossbar on Heat goalie Leland Irving. “When you’re giving up the first two goals of a game, it’s tough,” Walter noted afterward. “At the same time, we’re 3-1, and we’re doing some good things out there. Once we get everything together, I think we’ll be a really good team in this league.” Q The Heat (3-1-0) host the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday and Saturday (7 p.m. both nights). Pilots pour it on in wins over Kodiaks, Flames Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford Pilots racked up some eye-popping numbers last week, scoring a dozen goals and registering over 100 shots on net in road victories over the Aldergrove Kodiaks and Ridge Meadows Flames. The local Junior B hockey
club blitzed the Kodiaks 6-3 on Wednesday, and followed with a 6-2 win over the Ridge Meadows Flames on Friday, as they improved to 5-2-0 on the season. But even though the numbers suggest the Pilots are coming into their own as an offensive juggernaut, head coach Jim Cowden sees things differently.
"We've still got lots of things to work on," Cowden insisted, mentioning the forecheck and defensive-zone coverage as areas in need of upgrading. "No question, we had some good scoring opportunities," he added. "But we're only seven games into the season. Other teams are going to get better,
and we have to get better, too." On Wednesday, the Pilots avenged a 3-2 loss to the Kodiaks the previous weekend, exploding for four goals in the first period en route to the decisive win. Brad Parker (2), Kevin Lourens, Riley Lamb, Matthew Genovese and Adam Rossi scored for the Pilots, who registered an eye-
popping 62 shots on goal. The Pilots potted another halfdozen on Friday against Ridge Meadows on 43 shots, with Lourens (2), Dakota Schipper, Brady Lawlor, Ryan Stewart and Kyle Star doing the scoring. Q The Pilots are back in action Friday against the Mission Icebreakers (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).

A versatile performance from Devin Logan and lights-out play from the defence paved the way for the W.J. Mouat Hawks to steamroll the Terry Fox Ravens 33-0 in high school football action on Friday evening. Logan, the Hawks’ talented senior tailback, accounted for a trio of touchdowns in the first half – on a 65-yard punt return, a 20-yard run, and a 55-yard pass on an option throw to receiver Deion Bain. “We knew he could throw the ball pretty well, so we put that play in,” Hawks coach Denis Kelly explained. “I think teams are going to have to respect that in the future.” Kelly felt it was the best all-around team performance of the year for the Hawks, ranked No. 2 in B.C. among AAA teams. BATEMAN 46, PITT MEADOWS 29 The Pitt Meadows Marauders went to their bag of tricks early and often against the Robert Bateman Timberwolves, recovering three onside kicks in the first half on Friday. But once Bateman sorted out their specialteams snafus, they were off to the races in their AA regular season opener. “It often happens in atom and peewee – it shouldn’t happen at varsity,” Bateman coach Rick MacDonald said with a wry chuckle, referring to Pitt Meadows’ success with onside kicks. “I’m going to write it off to two weeks without a game, just being rusty. We woke up after that.” T-Wolves fullback Freddy Lyhne led the way with 121 rushing yards and three TDs. ABBY COLLEGIATE 30, LANGLEY 0 A multi-faceted performance from Dallas Yassinsky paced the Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers to a 30-0 road win over Langley Secondary in non-conference action on Friday. Yassinsky had a team-high five receptions for 84 yards and a major, an 85-yard punt return TD, and an interception on defence. Dillon McGuire rushed for 105 yards and a TD on six carries, while QB Carter Williams threw for 149 yards and two TDs – one to Yassinsky, and one to Jesse Neufeld. MISSION 43, HANSEN 7 The Mission Roadrunners, the province’s No. 2-ranked AA squad, lived up to their advance billing, thumping the Rick Hansen Hurricanes 43-7 in Mission on Friday. Mission quarterback Kevin Wiens threw for two majors and rushed for another, while the Hansen score came on a five-yard pass from Harpreet Dhaliwal to Shanjot Brar. UFV’s playoff hopes fading A tough weekend on their home turf pushed the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team to the brink of elimination in the playoff race. The Cascades suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat to the Regina Cougars on Saturday, then needed a late goal from Megan Webster to salvage a 1-1 draw with the Manitoba Bisons on Sunday. “Our lack of ability to put the ball in the back of the net continues to plague us,” noted head coach Rob Giesbrecht, whose team out-shot the Bisons 17-3. “It’s a very tough result to take.” The Cascades finish off the regular season with a home-and-home set with the UVic Vikes, who hold the fourth and final Canada West playoff spot at 5-4-3 for

In men’s soccer action, the Cascades lost 3-1 to UBC on Saturday, and 2-1 to Trinity Western on Sunday to fall to 1-8-1 on the season. Quiring’s kills pace Bearcats past Blues A record-breaking weekend from Will Quiring paced the Columbia Bible College men's volleyball team to a pair of wins at Capilano University to open the PACWest regular season. Quiring, a sophomore outside hitter, racked up a team-record 30 kills in a five-set win on Friday, with the Bearcats prevailing 16-14 in the fifth set. Hadwin 70th at PGA Tour event
Adam Hadwin made the cut at the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island, Georgia on the weekend – his fifth made cut in five PGA Tour events this season – but he didn't get the payday he was looking for. The 23-year-old Abbotsford golfer struggled to a six-over 76 during Sunday's final round, leaving him in 70th place at seven-over for the tournament. Hadwin went into the event hoping to crack the top 125 on the PGA Tour money list, which would have earned him a tour card for next season. His McGladrey finish was worth just $8,000, though, leaving him in 159th place on the money list at $440,752. He'll attend the second round of PGA Q-School next month.

Saturday. Jenna Evans notched 13 kills in the second game. The UFV men split with Douglas, winning in four sets Friday and falling in three on Saturday.
