Charges laid against Dorozans Abbotsford brothers arrested for multiple break-ins
A total of 21 charges of break and enter have been approved against brothers Dane and Darwin Dorozan of Abbotsford. The charges stem from crimes the pair have allegedly committed in Surrey, Langley and White Rock over the last several months. Dane, 35, is facing two charges of break and enter and has been released DANE DOROZAN on strict conditions, according to the Surrey RCMP. Darwin, 36, is currently in custody and is facing 19 charges of break and enter, one charge of possession of stolen property, and one charge of assault with a weapon. The pair were arrested Aug. 15 following a residential break-in in South Surrey. Their next court appearance is Oct. 19 in Surrey.
Darwin has a long list of charges and convictions through the Lower Mainland, dating back to 1995, according to the provincial court database. His convictions include possession of stolen property, theft, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and break and enter. Dane has previously been convicted DARWIN DOROZAN of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and break and enter. He was most recently charged with drug possession charges last December in Abbotsford, with his trial due to begin Oct. 20 in Abbotsford provincial court. A third brother, Dennis, 38, also has a criminal history, but was not charged in the latest offences. He was previously convicted of possession of stolen property, and break and enter.

Water project
City campaign to inform public Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
The city has launched a $200,000 information campaign on the Stave Lake Water Project, set for referendum Nov. 19. Calling it an awareness project, the city has hired the consulting firm, The Pace Group, as well as 13 part-time staff to help spread the message regarding the city’s current water situation. “The fact of the matter is, the city is going to need a new water supply by 2016,” Abbotsford Mayor George Peary said at Monday’s campaign launch, held at Calais Farms. Jay Teichroeb, the city’s general manager of economic development and planning services, said the “biggest challenge is to make people informed.” He also said a recent phone poll performed for the city (the results of which were scheduled to be released yesterday at city council) indicated that many respondents didn’t even know about the water issue. According to a city

Jay Teichrob, the city’s general manager of economic development, addresses a press conference on Monday morning. release, “by building the necessary water delivery infrastructure through a publicprivate partnership (P3), the proposed $291-million project is eligible for a federal funding contribution of $61 million. “The estimated maximum cost of the Stave Lake Project as a traditional (non-P3) procurement is $328 million and is not eligible for the same federal funding.” Peary said both the federal and provincial governments indicated no other funding is currently available. “The federal govern-
ment directed us to P3 ... they said that’s where the funding is,” said Peary. By going to referendum, “the public will get a chance to decide,” and the city campaign will help them make an informed decision, said Peary. “There’s a lot at stake here ... We have pulled out all the stops. We will be promoting this, encouraging people to take an interest.” The program has a website, www.stavelakeproject.ca, along with an exhibit tour that will be going to
public locations in the city in coming weeks. P3 projects are often controversial, as some people fear private businesses involvement in what is normally a public-sector industry. The Stave Lake project would see a private company build and operate a water treatment plant for 25 years. This would be a secondary water supply as Abbotsford already uses Norrish Creek. Critics of the P3 proposal say the city’s campaign is more “fear-mong ering” than informative. Lynn Per rin, spokesperson for Water Watch MissionAbbotsford, pointed to a 2009 report presented to the AbbotsfordMission Water and Sewer Commission, stating the current water supply is sufficient – as long as conservation measures take place – until 2031. The group is opposed to what they call “the privatization of water,” quoting an Environics national poll which indicated 87 per cent of Canadians “think our drinking water is a precious natural resource that should remain public and be protected from private corporate interest.” The city counters that argument, claiming the water will al-

Pot left burning on the stove A fire at a rural Abbotsford home sent five people to hospital late Friday night. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called to the home at 140 Mt. Lehman Road at about 11 p.m. When crews arrived, they found the kitchen on fire and smoke coming from the eaves. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said the fire started from an unattended pot left on the stove which ignited nearby combustible materials and spread through the range vent into the attic space. He said the adult occupants of the home had fallen asleep and were awakened by smoke
coming from the kitchen. The man suffered smoke inhalation and cuts to his hand after he broke a window and attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose. He was taken to hospital, as were his wife and three children – ages nine months and five and six years old – as a precaution. Helmer said 24 firefighters and six trucks from four halls fought the fire and were able to contain it after about 10 minutes. Damage to the home is estimated at $50,000. He said the family was fortunate to escape the fire, as there were no smoke alarms within the home.
City first applied to PPP in June 2010 From A5
ways be publicly owned. “It’s important for everyone to know that the City of Abbotsford will always be in control of water quality testing, the water distribution from the new plant, as well as retain all control and ownership over the treatment facility and the water supply,” said Peary. “At no time will a private operator ever have the ability to set water rates, or sell any of the water from the plant.” But critics aren’t convinced. Perrin said there is plenty of time to consider other options, including future federal funding possibilities. Water Watch is promoting a no vote for the referendum. The city was scheduled to vote on the wording of the referendum at yesterday’s meeting.
Funding:
The city is expecting an announcement from PPP Canada on its funding request in the coming weeks. A report indicates officials first applied to PPP
Canada for funding in June 2010, 10 months before Abbotsford council voted to move forward with the P3 Stave Lake Water Project. Critics of the P3 proposal find that worrisome. Perrin said the city goes against the community charter “with impunity. “There are so many questions that have not been answered,” she said. But city manager Frank Pizzuto said there is nothing unusual about the timeline. “The city applies for all kinds of grants to see if there are any opportunities for funding out there.” He said the city made an initial application to see if there was senior government interest. When council voted in April 2011 to approve moving forward with the P3 endeavour, a formal funding request was made. The referendum question contains a federal funding amount of $61 million, and Pizzuto said if the city does not receive that amount, it would make the referendum “null and void.”

The Trotman Auto Group didn’t have to go far for its latest acquisition – just across the street. The owners of Abbotsford Hyundai in the Fraser Valley Auto Mall have acquired Abbotsford Chrysler, effective Oct. 1. The group, operated by Abbotsford brothers Mitch, Mike and Brad Trotman, started with the family business Langley Chrysler. They added Comox Valley Dodge in 2003 and diversified to an import brand with Alpine Toyota of Cranbrook in 2008. They bought their first hometown dealership in 2009, acquiring Don Quast Hyundai and changing the name to Abbotsford Hyundai,

then added the fifth dealership this fall. “We grew up here. We know the town, and we like the town,” said Mitch Trotman, who will operate the group’s two Abbotsford dealerships. He said the Fraser Valley Auto Mall, where the Trotmans now own two of eight dealerships, is a unique place to shop for a vehicle. “Where else, in the Lower Mainland, can you get 40 acres of cars in one spot?” he pointed out. The Trotman Auto Group has emerged as a major player in the automotive industry in B.C. The Group generated $110 million in sales in 2010, and Mike Trotman, the president and CEO, was named to the prestigious Top 40 Under 40 list chosen by Business in Vancouver magazine.

Two stabbed in fight
Vikki HOPES
Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Police have not yet tracked down a group of people connected to a double stabbing outside a Denny’s restaurant early Friday morning. Two men were stabbed in the parking lot on the east side of the restaurant, located at 32720 Simon Ave. (just west of Gladwin Road), during a physical altercation. Const. Ian MacDonald said the incident began inside the restaurant between two groups of people from the ages of late teens to early 20s. MacDonald said one group was leaving the restaurant at about 2:30 a.m., when “either something was said or somebody looked at someone the wrong way.” The second group then followed them into the parking lot, and two men from each

When it was over, the first group got into a vehicle and drove away, while the other group went back into the restaurant to retrieve their belongings. MacDonald said while the first group was driving away, two of them noticed they had been stabbed and were bleeding, and they were then driven to Abbotsford Regional Hospital to be treated for non-lifethreatening injuries. One of them, age 19, had suffered some internal damage and
was transferred for surgery to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. The other, age 24, was later released from hospital. MacDonald said police have spoken to the group, and they have all been cooperative. Some of them are from outside of B.C., but they do not appear to have any gang or criminal connections, he said. Police are still trying to track down the other group and have had difficulty identifying them.

Still time to consult One of the hot topics at this week’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention is BC Hydro’s controversial decision to bring in smart meters. This has been an issue for many people around the province. Aside from some irrational fears of radiation, there are legitimate public concerns over privacy, loss of jobs for meter readers and billing based on time of use. However, the smart meter issue boils down to one simple fact. The government pushed the idea through without proper consultation, and has continued to stick with the proposal despite a change in leadership and a new minister of energy, who has already taken a much closer look at all aspects of Hydro’s operations. Energy Minister Rich Coleman is perhaps one of the most pragmatic members of the cabinet. He was asked by former premier Gordon Campbell to take on many challenging files, and he relishes hard work.
He has already shown a willingness to make some changes in the way Hydro does things. Thus it would be no real problem for him to ask Hydro to delay the smart meter program, at least until there has been full consultation with the public. Coleman knows, as do all members of the cabinet, that this lack of proper consultation is what doomed the HST, and it is unlikely that he would like to see a repeat of that fiasco. BC Hydro could arrange a series of public meetings on the topic, and give the public a chance to ask questions and present their views. Hydro can bring out experts on smart meters and also outline exactly why the corporation feels they are so important. Hydro and the government have not handled this issue well thus far, but there is still time to rectify much of the damage. – Black Press
The tribulations of country living Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand Last week while working on improving the look of the boulevard in front of the house, a neighbour stopped by, his opening salutation “I got one.” Then I realized, he had previously asked about what I used against the invasion of moles on my lawn, and was now announcing his success. The conversation then wandered to all the other challenges that rural living provides, such as the usual fall influx of mice that seek out the warmer climes of kitchen, pantry and basement crannies, and how if you don’t tie a string to the trap, the expiring mouse will often crawl into a heating duct, its demise not discovered until the furnace kicks in. Another joy of living in a wooden house, both inside and out, on Sumas Mountain are cluster flies, which if you have never experienced them, are akin to the Mongol hordes – they just
keep coming. Cluster flies do just that: cluster on your windows, congregate in corners and collect in light fixtures. They join you in the shower, float lazily down into your hair just as you are about to fall asleep, and generally make life unpleasant. There’s nothing like the stench of fried fly in the halogen bathroom light to remind you to always use the exhaust fan. And no matter how many you vacuum, their numbers never seems to diminish. But if they make sleep annoying, it pales to the sound of woodpeckers beating on the side of the house at dawn of a Sunday morning, seeking late-comers to the sanctity of indoors. Another plague yet to come are the lady bugs that turn light fixtures into mini-Le Mans race courses as, in their hundreds they constantly course the chandeliers in search of warmth. They don’t normally arrive inside until January, mercifully sparing us the need to keep them out of the cranberry sauce at Christmas. Not only are they physically annoying, when they expire in the Hoover, or get flushed down the sink, they emit a rather unpleasant odour … sort of a
parting gift for their deathly departure. Maybe it’s just payback for the summers when, up here, there are no flies (except on the livestock) to speak of, and screens on the patio doors don’t need to be closed. Or why we never get plagued by hornets around the barbecue or when eating on the deck.
Lament not you who live on city lots of apartments, acreage is not always as appealing as it looks. Unfortunately, fall and winter is when you spent most of the time indoors, and the last thing you appreciate is the invasion of nature. Also, this time of year is when we recognize the value of never discarding old towels – two dogs and a big back yard means there is always at least one towel at the backdoor to wipe their feet.
Regrettably, try as we might, neither pooch has learned to do it themselves, preferring to blast through the door into the middle of the room if we are not there to corral them in, leaving a trail of muddy prints. That is, however, a small price to pay in exchange for them understanding that outside is where they do their ‘business,’ where the daily use of a large scoop shovel is far more pleasant than scrubbing and sanitizing hardwood or broadloom. So lament not you who live on city lots or apartments, acreage is not always as appealing as it looks. Aside from the tribulations placed on us by nature, the work required to maintain it never ends. Then again, though I often wonder why I never seem to have the time to do anything but toil in the yard, or constantly fix things that inevitably require repair – even put up with dead mice in the ducts, or bugs and bats – I wouldn’t trade the lifestyle for the world. Unless, of course, I win the lottery. markrushton@abbynews.com

Columnist lacks vision
Human rights organizations are seeking to have George Bush arrested for human rights violations regarding torture if he sets foot in any country outside of the U.S., but Frank Bucholtz in his column last week thinks that Bush protestors have ‘lack of vision.’ I and many others think not and that it is people like he and Surrey Mayor Watts that lack vision. Not only is any kind of torture inhumane and illegal it produces misinformation. Years ago, innocent people confessed to being witches when the church put them in the ducking
stool, an early form of waterboarding, which led to their death by burning. Choosing death by burning over torture should tell anyone how ineffective torture is. Also, both Bill Clinton and George Bush allowed and encouraged questionable borrowing practices which allowed people without sufficient capital and income to buy homes. This of course led to sub-prime mortgages and the world’s current financial crisis, so to have them both speak at an event which focuses on the economy is nothing more than a bad joke. Gary Huntbatch
Objectionable noise Re: Letter on noise Please include one even more objectionable noise to his list of motorcycles and SUVs – that of the infernal diesel horns of trains coming through Abbotsford at all hours of the day, but especially during the night! Recently, one night some horn-happy train driver blasted us with nine very loud blasts between two and three in the morning. Can’t anything be done about this disregard of the people of Abbotsford? Big enough for families and cargo
The newest entrant in a growing Prius family of hybrid vehicles, the Prius v delivers an unparalleled blend of versatility and fuel efficiency in a comfortable, mid-size package. A new evolution in hybrid vehicles with excellent cargo space and Prius’ heritage of environmental performance and fuel economy, the 2012 Prius v will go on sale in
Fall 2011. The new Prius v, with “v” expressing the vehicle’s versatility, will meet the needs of growing families with active lifestyles while providing the same attributes traditionally found in the Prius DNA. Despite the spaciousness of a family friendly midsize vehicle, the Prius v will deliver estimated EPA fuel economy
ratings of 52.5 mpg city, 48 mpg highway and 50.4 mpg combined. “The Prius v brings leading-edge hybrid technology to customers who need more room and provides more cargo space than 80 percent of all small SUVs,” said Sunrise Toyota General Manager Mark Smith. “And because it’s a Prius, it produces 66 percent fewer
smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle and will have the best mileage ratings of any SUV, crossover, or wagon sold in Canada. We think that’s a win-win for everybody.” The Prius v will be utilizing the same proven Hybrid Synergy Drive system as the third-generation Prius, with the advantages of high
mileage, low emissions, and never needing to be recharged. A product of the same culture of innovation that spawned the original Prius 14 years and two-million units ago, the Prius v follows family tradition with new technologies and equipment advances that continues to raise the bar on the cutting edge automotive science.

Cascades split at home Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
When navigating the gauntlet that is the Canada West conference, it’s the little things that make the difference between winning and losing. That’s the lesson the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer squad is learning during an up-anddown first half of the season. On Saturday at Bateman Park, the Cascades opened a two-game homestand with a dominant 2-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns. UFV didn’t allow a shot on net, and goals from Chelsea Steffen and Megan Webster provided the margin of victory. On Sunday, the Cascades out-played the Calgary Dinos, holding the majority of possession and out-shooting their guests 12-3. But it was the Dinos escaping with a 1-0 win, courtesy of Victoria Moretti’s goal in the 27th minute. The loss dropped the defending Canada West champs to 3-3-2 on the season, good for seventh place. While the Cascades are still in the thick of the playoff race, head coach Rob Giesbrecht said his team needs to bear down and find
another gear. “Our biggest issue this weekend was a lack of finishing – that final pass or final shot just let us down a little bit,” he said. “You earn that little bit of luck you need, and maybe we’re just lacking that extra level of competitiveness or desire to allow us to get the points.” In men’s soccer action, the Cascades snapped a five-game losing streak with a scoreless draw against UVic on Saturday at Bateman. But on Sunday in Victoria, the Vikes won the back half of the home-andhome set 4-0. “We need to do some soul searching and the week off might be the best thing for us to be able to regroup,” said head coach Alan Errington, whose team fell to 1-6-1. Q During their bye week, Errington and nine first-year players from his UFV side travel to Fredricton, N.B. this week in search of a national U18 title. They’re part of a Magnuson Ford Mariners FC squad which won the provincial championship in July. The Cascades women hit the road this weekend to face UBC on Friday and Trinity Western on Saturday.

Logan, Hawks sprint past Van College Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
In the wake of his team’s exceedingly impressive 42-14 road win over Vancouver College on Saturday afternoon, W.J. Mouat Hawks football coach Denis Kelly was quick to note the game wasn’t as lopsided as the score indicated.
“It was pretty close,” Kelly asserted. “It was just a couple of key plays that turned it.” Fortunately for Mouat, they were on the giving end rather than the receiving end of those big plays. Devin Logan led the way for the Hawks, who came in
ranked No. 3 in the provincial AAA rankings, one spot behind Van College. The senior running back ripped the Fighting Irish for 221 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries. On the defensive side, Nathan Henczel made two interceptions to snuff promising Van
College drives, and tacked on a total of 100 return yards. Q The Robert Bateman Timberwolves boosted their record to 4-0 with a 48-6 victory over Langley at home on Friday. Justin Douglas (148 yards on five carries) and Jorden Best (135 yards on four carries) were both extremely efficient along the Continued on A21
Ex-Canuck Desbiens assigned to Heat One week into training camp, the Abbotsford Heat’s roster is beginning to come into focus. On Saturday, the Heat cut 16 players, including four forwards who played for them last season. Bryan Cameron, John Armstrong, Justin Dowling and Ryley Grantham were among a group of players assigned to the Utah Grizzlies, the Heat’s ECHL affiliate. Cameron and Armstrong were with the Heat for the bulk of last season – the former notching six goals and nine assists in 60 games, and the latter posting nine goals and eight assists DESBIENS in 78 games. On Sunday, the Heat received a big addition in Guillaume Desbiens, who was reassigned by the Calgary Flames after clearing waivers. The 6’3” power forward was a thorn in the side of the Heat over the past two seasons as a member of the Manitoba Moose, and he also suited up for 13 games with the Vancouver Canucks during that period. He inked a oneyear, two-way contract with the Flames/Heat in July. The Heat now have 26 players left in camp, with more expected to arrive from the Flames this week. T-Wolves run wild From A20
Jason Sidhu (five tackles, one sack) and Raj Jindal (five tackles) were solid on defence. But the Hurricanes struggled to move the ball, posting just 174 yards in total offence. Q Turnovers cost the Abby Collegiate Panthers (1-3) in a defensive battle with Holy Cross of Surrey. Quarterback Carter Williams racked up 244 passing yards and registered a TD pass, but Holy Cross picked him off four times en route to a 13-6 win. Receiver Dallas Yassinsky had a big game with eight catches for 120 yards. For more coverage, visit abbynews.com

The Hurricanes (1-3) fumbled the opening kickoff, then turned the ball over again on their initial drive to allow Seaquam to grab a 14-0 lead. Kolins strikes in OT to lift Pilots
EXHIBITION CLOSING OCTOBER 9
The Abbotsford Pilots dominated the Port Moody Black Panthers in many respects on Friday at MSA Arena, but it took until overtime to finally subdue the pesky visitors. With Luke Venema screening in front, Brett Kolins hammered a point shot past Panthers goalie Nicholas Taylor 35 seconds into OT to lift the Pilots to a 6-5 victory. It was the Pilots’ 58th shot of the evening, compared to just 29 for Port Moody. “As far as territorial play, we were the better team, Pilots head
