Trial opens into fatal road rage case

10 YEARS AFTER 9/11 Abbotsford police and emergency responders take part in border ceremony A13

Hit-and-run took the life of Abbotsford’s Silas O’Brien Dan FERGUSON Black Press

Brent Parent said nothing as the charges against him were read out by a court clerk Monday morning in a B.C. Supreme Court chamber in New Westminster. As each count was read, his lawyer spoke for him, saying “Mr. Parent pleads not guilty.” There were five road rage-related charges against the Langley man. They include criminal negligence causing the death of 21-year-old Silas O’Brien of Abbotsford on March 13, 2008 in Langley, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of the accident. More than a dozen family and friends of O’Brien showed up for the first day of court, causing court administrators to change courtrooms to find one big enough to accommodate everyone. A grim-faced Parent, who is not in custody, arrived with a female companion who was careful to sit apart from the O’Brien family in the courtroom visitor’s gallery after Parent took his seat in the trial chamber. In her opening statement, Crown Prosecutor Donna Ballyk said the evidence will show that immediately after Parent ran O’Brien down, he went home and sat in his hot tub, drinking beer with his brother and talking so loudly that they disturbed a neighbour. The next day, police arrested Continued on A7

“I wished I had gone sooner!”

Invisible.

Finally! Affordable.

Hear life now. Wearing hearing aids is not new to me as I’ve had them for close to eight years. I had been reading about the newer technology and smaller hearing aids that are now available, but I was hesitant to go through the process of getting new ones. The last pair I got took weeks of adjusting, screeching, not a pleasant experience. Once I got them tweaked they seem to do the trick. Although I didn’t purchase my Àrst pair at Crystal Hearing centre I had heard good things about them, so I went in and explained that I might want to buy new hearing aids. The no pressure approach and the new technology of my “in the ear” hearing aids made the purchase easy and hassle free. I wish I would have gone earlier! The best thing was the tweaking process was almost non existent and there is no old screeching in my ear anymore. If you have older hearing aids, don’t waste time get in and see the professionals at Crystal Hearing Centre today! Walter M.

A former Fraser Health technology manager has been handed a one-year conditional sentence and a year’s probation for improperly accepting benefits from a contractor supplying electronic health care systems to hospitals. James Roy Taylor, 64, was charged in 2010 along with an Abbotsford doctor and a former senior official in the B.C. health ministry. Taylor pleaded guilty Tuesday in Victoria provincial court to one count of breach of trust, and three other charges were withdrawn. Special prosecutor John Waddell recommended the sentence, which begins with six months of house arrest, where Taylor will only be allowed to leave his South Surrey home between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. for work or other activities approved by his probation supervisor. Taylor was also fined $2,000, the value of a stay at a Kelowna condominium he accepted as a benefit without telling his supervisors. He must also perform 175 hours of community service. Waddell said the house arrest conditions are more severe than others charged in the case because Taylor has a previous conviction for fraud, related to the disappearance of $66,000 from the White Rock Sea Festival Society when Taylor was its president in 1998. Ron Danderfer, former assistant deputy minister of health

responsible for technology, also pleaded guilty in July to one charge of breach of trust. Danderfer and Taylor both admitted accepting benefits from Jonathan Burns, the Abbotsford doctor who pleaded guilty in February to two charges in the case. When charges were revealed in March 2010, prosecutors accused Burns of offering Danderfer and Taylor accommodation at a Kelowna condominium, employment income for relatives and “post-retirement income in exchange for using their positions to give contracts to Burns and his company WebMed Technology Inc. Burns was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service, providing free health care to the needy. Danderfer was put on probation for two years, plus community service and a fine of $3,690, the value of two stays at the Kelowna condo. In search warrant documents filed in 2009, RCMP commercial crime investigators alleged that WebMed “fraudulently submitted 30 invoices totalling $251,348.40 that Jim Taylor fraudulently authorized. Burns hired Taylor’s wife, a nurse, to work for WebMed when the company’s digital diagnosis system was being tested in Chilliwack and Maple Ridge hospitals. In applications for search warrants, RCMP said Burns offered to pay for side trips to Paris and Egypt while Burns and Ron Danderfer were on government business in Europe.

The court was told that Priester, 52, and Casgrain had been in a four-year relationship at the time of her death. They met when Priester, who was a care aide, worked for Casgrain’s father. McLeod said both had been drinking on the night of March 24 and got into an argument that progressed into a “prolonged” assault by Casgrain in which he repeatedly kicked Priester. September ‘summer’ sizzles

Abbotsford News

Abbotsford experienced its hottest day of the year on Sunday, with 31.1 C also setting a new mark as the hottest Sept. 11 on record in the city. And Abby was set to hit another hot-weather record on Monday – most consecutive days with the temperature above 25 C in the month of September. The record is 10 days, set in 1974. Abbotsford was set to match that mark on Monday, as the mercury was forecast to get up to 26 C, and the morning began with the bright sunshine that has typified this balmy September. “A 10-day stretch of weather like that is unusual,” said David Jones, an Environment Canada meteorologist, noting that the hottest day of the year almost always occurs in

July or August. He said daily weather records are being set all over the South Coast region this month, and Abbotsford temperatures have flirted with new records on a daily basis. Saturday was 29.7 C and Friday 29.2 C, before the mercury set Sunday’s new mark. “We finally got a big, summertime ridge that was stagnant over us,” he said, noting offshore cool air has been blocked from moving inland, “and we just baked.” The record for the hottest recorded September day in Abbotsford, 37.5 C set on Sept. 3, 1988, is in no immediate danger. A cooling forecast predicted temperatures would drop to 22 C on Tuesday and Wednesday, with clouds and showers forecast for later in the week and through the weekend.

COASTAL QUAKE A magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck Friday off the west coast of Vancouver Island did no damage but left residents across southwestern B.C. trading stories of what they felt. The quake hit at 12:41 p.m. and was centered about 100 kilometres west of Tofino at a depth of 22 kilometres, according to Natural Resources Canada. Many residents in the Lower Mainland felt nothing, but others report feeling something like a helicopter passing overhead or the reverberation of a passing freight train.

Priester placed a 911 call from the couple’s Mayfair Street apartment just before 8 p.m. but the operator who answered the call found the line disconnected. The operator called back twice and spoke with a man before concluding that police were not needed, believing the initial call was related to a theft. Police responded to a call from a family member at about 7:30 the next morning,

and found Priester dead. They later apologized publicly to the family for the mishandling of the 911 call. McLeod said, in considering the sentence, the judge should take into account that Casgrain knew of his commonlaw wife’s health issues, but he left her to die on the kitchen floor after the assault and did not call for help. Casg rain, who spent five weeks in prison after his arrest in 2008, issued a statement in court, apologizing to Priester’s family and saying he has been sober. “I will do whatever it takes to be a better

person,” he said. Outside of court, Priester’s sister, Lucy Fairhurst, said the family did not believe his apology was sincere, and they are “disgusted” that he is being sentenced for aggravated assault, rather than murder. “I can’t believe someone can do that to a person and think he’s going to get sympathy.” Fairhurst said her sister – the mom of two grown children and grandmother of six – “didn’t have a mean streak in her body.” “She was a genuine, fun-loving, caring person ... hearing was delayed more than a year after Casgrain recovered from serious leg injuries he suffered when he was hit by a car while travelling in his four-wheeled scooter. At that time, police received a report that an intoxicated man was causing a disturbance at a clothing store on McCallum Road. Collision with truck kills motorcyclist, 49 Weekend accident on Vye Road

Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

A collision between a motorcycle and a five-ton truck in the 34300 block of Vye Road claimed the life of the 49-year-old motorcycle rider on Saturday afternoon. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the driver of the truck was westbound on Vye, and was turning left into a business when the accident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. It appears the driver of the Harley Davidson motorcycle either tried to avoid the collision and lost control, or may have deliberately “dumped his bike. He was separated from the motorcycle when his body collided with the

rear section of the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The 27-year-old driver of the truck was shaken, but remained on scene and was cooperative with police as they began their investigation. He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. MacDonald said charges against the pickup driver have not been ruled out, and from the early investigation it appears he turned into oncoming traffic, which would have the right of way. Police are still determining whether speed was a factor. RCMP issued a public advisory that motorcycle riders slow down, after there were four rider deaths around the province during

Parent and his brother as they were leaving the property. By then a distinctive sled deck had been removed from the truck Parent allegedly used to run down O’Brien. Ballyk said the evidence will show that O’Brien and two friends were in a Chevy Silverado heading to the airport for a flight to Hawaii when they made contact with a Ford F250 truck driven by Parent, whose brother was riding with him. The Silverado was hit a glancing blow on the passenger side, while the Ford suffered a scrape on the driver’s side. After that, Ballyk said, Parent ran the Ford off the road into a ditch, then returned and ran O’Brien down. At the time, Parent was 38. The first witness called by the prosecution was a former New Westminster Police officer who was a member of the regional Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) assigned to the case. Natasha Purba took the judge through the initial IHIT photographs of the crime scene that included images of the blood stain left where O’Brien hit the pavement. According to the prosecution, as O’Brien and his friends, Sam Dooley and Luke Stevens, also 21, were driving to the airport around

2 a.m. to make their flight, they came upon a white Ford F250 driven by Parent, with a sled carrier for snowmobiles and other recreational vehicles on the back.

The Ford was stopped in the road in the 25800 block of 16 Avenue. When the Silverado went to drive around it, the Ford began moving, which is when the two vehicles made

contact. The Ford circled back and ran the Silverado off the road, causing it to flip into a ditch. The three occupants were standing on the side of the road surveying

Bargain, but quietly Teachers’ contract bargaining should not be a spectator sport with zealots cheering on their combatants like teens at an after-school fist fight. There are more adult ways to conduct negotiations than fear mongering, rabble rousing and putdowns. With school now underway, both sides in the B.C. public school teachers dispute should loudly pronounce their intentions to bargain in good faith and then duck under the cover of silence until there’s something worthwhile to report — like a settlement. The BC Teachers’ Federation and the BC Public School Employers’ Association have an opportunity to create a teachable moment for thousands of B.C. students by engaging in respectful negotiations. No doubt there are extreme challenges facing both sides in this dispute because the teachers are expected to live within the same “zero net” deal accepted by other public sector unions. With an arbitrator ruling that

issues traditionally discussed at the provincial table should remain there, and class size and composition regulations left out of the discussion for now (the province has until next April to contemplate the implications of a Supreme Court ruling that struck down class size and composition regulations), both sides in the dispute have a very narrow range of concerns to deal with. One option is for both sides to bear down on a few key non-monetary items to obtain a short-term deal or stall for a year or more until the way is clear for a possible return to bargaining of class size and composition, wages and benefits. Complaints of unreasonable concessions or unrealistic demands are typical opening bargaining positions. With these volleys out of the way, it’s time for some serious bargaining. But, please, let’s do it quietly, and with the least disruption for students. – Black Press

Rushton On the

Other Hand Reading recently about an elderly chap who was severely injured, got me to thinking, and perhaps disturbingly with a smile, about the dumb things people do. It appears the old guy somehow managed to fall over, and landed directly on a set of garden shears, impaling himself in the orbit of his eye socket. Granted, a horrible accident, but surely no one could be silly enough to leave garden shears, or anything else, pointy end up. I would assume that when he recovers, and I hope he does, that he recalls the motherly advice to kids: don’t run with scissors (or at least don’t lean them up against anything). Bad as this gent’s experience was, it was overshadowed by reports of a woman who was intending to back the pickup truck down the driveway, while hubby was having a smoke on the sidewalk. Seems mom got in the truck, put it

in reverse and discovered that the park brake was still engaged. According to the news story, because of her size (large, I’m assuming) she could not reach the brake release while seated in the truck. Therefore, she exited the vehicle, pulled the release catch, the truck rolled down the driveway, the driver’s door knocked her down, and the rig rolled over pop, doing him grievous harm. I am not trying to trivialize what happened to these people, but it is the things we do without thinking that inevitably get us into trouble. And just so you don’t think I’m above engaging in dumb acts, let me describe a couple of incidents at my own house. Having an afternoon to kill, I decided to refurbish an antique tool, never used because its parts were sticky and sluggish. Taking it apart was a bit of a project and, unlike most glasses wearers I take them off for close work. Finally the tool was in bits and pieces, carefully arranged in order of disassembly to avoid screaming rants during reconstruction. Cleaning the parts required liberal doses of an aerosol degreaser, and considerable scrubbing. Finally, the largest piece required a good flushing with the caustic

cleanser so I took it outside, and since my without-glasses vision is rather short, held it fairly close as I blasted away. In less than the blink of an eye, which I didn’t, the full flow of the degreaser bounced back. Instant blindness, excruciating pain! I managed to make my way through the

In less than the blink of an eye, which I didn’t, the full flow of the degreaser bounced back. Instant blindness, excruciating pain! garage, up the stairs and into the kitchen to flush my eyes, hoping for no long-term damage. Not 20 feet from where I accomplished this act of stupidity is a cabinet that contains at least four pairs of safety glasses, a face shield and numerous protective devices. On the weekend, the purveyor of culi-

nary delights at my home decided we (me) should barbecue a beer-butt chicken. For the uniformed, that requires stuffing an open and full beer can in the chicken’s bottom, then placing it in a vertical position on the grill. All was well for the first few minutes, but since chickens have considerable fat, the drippings began to ignite with sufficient volume to require constant hosing down with a spray bottle. In the process, the chicken was taking on a premature blackened appearance. I had the revelation that placing the bird on a tray would capture the grease and eliminate both flames and soot. With an audience, and hand coverings, I gripped the chicken, raised it so the tray could be placed on the grill, and the beer can shot out of the bird’s backside faster than greased lightning. As it chugged out boiling beer I demanded that those watching grab the can and right it. They both looked at me and, with bare hands waving, pointed out the stupidity of my insistence. In the end, the chicken was fine but my place in the ranks of dumb and dumber saw a considerable rise. markrushton@abbynews.com

letters Can’t afford teacher parity

For more than 40 years I served in the teaching profession at all levels from elementary grades to doctoral students. Several realities trouble me about the current B.C. teachers’ crisis. First, it’s profoundly incongruous when the provincial employer beginsallegedlyserious negotiations by declaring there will be zero net salary increase. Governmental credibility is further weakened in that it and its agen-

cies repeatedly award huge increases to the top public servants and give them embarrassingly large severance golden handshakes. Second, I am critical of teachers for asserting that issuing report cards is not part of core teaching responsibilities. Students need official feedback, not some unofficial comments made to those parents who happen to have the time to go to school. Third, it’s almost humorous, to see the

BCTF spokespeople pressing for parity with Alberta teachers. For decades, the BCTF has campaigned enthusiastically for the defeat of free enterprise political parties and for the election of the democratic socialist NDP. In B.C., when the BCTF-supported NDP came to office in the 1990s, that party mismanaged the economy so badly that B.C., equally endowed with vast natural resources, actually lurched to

I did the math: I am at school by 7 a.m. to get copying done, organize handouts and do other preparatory work. I am in my classroom until 6. I spend on average five hours each weekend, marking, recording marks, developing worksheets and lesson plans, and so on. So, each working week, I work 60 hours, teaching high school. If a normal work week is 40 hours, I work 50 per cent more. Since I teach for 36 weeks a year, this comes out to 54 “normal” work weeks – with no time off. In addition, during Christmas and spring

becoming a have-not province. Under the subsequent Liberal government, despite its own huge policy problems, the B.C. economy has recovered but only partially. In sum, one reason why the B.C. economy cannot afford parity in teacher pay with Alberta is that with the support of the BCTF, the previous NDP government seriously weakened the B.C. economy.

breaks, I work three or four eight-hour days each week catching up on marking and preparation. I did at least eight hours of work each week during my summer “holidays,” plus a four-day professional development course, which cost $1,000. I do all of this for the princely sum of $45,000 per year. I am a new teacher. I have a family that wants my attention, but doesn’t get it because I’m busy with school. Please, remember that teachers work hard, year-round, for our students. Elizabeth A. Cousar

It’s time to put the firewood away our houses. Everything we do outside during these months involves breathing wood smoke and if it’s outside the house it’s inside the house, which leaves our house smelling like a campground. Even when we take our dog out, she ends up coming back in the house stinking of smoke. Biologist and antiaquaculture activist Alexandra Morton was scorned Wednesday and accused of ethical breaches in her crusade to tie ocean salmon farms to the collapse of the Fraser River’s wild sockeye runs. Morton, executive director of the Raincoast Research Society, defiantly stood her ground in the first of two days of grilling before the Cohen Inquiry. She was pressed on how she can categorically say salmon farms cannot safely co-exist with wild runs when most other scientists testifying before the commission have said – with varying degrees of certainty – that it should be possible. “I am completely independent, Morton replied, adding she doesn’t work for a university, government or other vested interests. “You are pure, are you? You’re the only one that isn’t corrupted by business, by government, by a university? asked Aboriginal A q u a c u l t u r e Association lawyer Steven Kelliher in cross-examination. “Perhaps, she said.

Alexandra Morton testifies before the Cohen Inquiry. The exchange came after lawyers for the provincial and federal governments and B.C.’s salmon farming industry sought to exclude from evidence a new report Morton wrote summarizing her findings for the inquiry. “The document is full of hearsay and speculation, charged Alan Blair, representing the B.C. Salmon Farmers’ Association at the inquiry. He said Morton drew scientific conclusions “far beyond her expertise and suggested the report is biased, amounting to a violation of the code of ethics requiring professional biologists to

be objective. Federal government lawyer Mitchell Taylor said Morton’s report contains statements that are “simply contrary to the evidence. Justice Bruce Cohen, the federally appointed head of the commission into declining sockeye, did not immediately rule on the report’s admissibility. Morton recounted her key findings after years of examining sea lice infestations and other possible risks to migrating salmon. She told the inquiry salmon farms act as a reservoir that amplifies pre-existing parasites and diseases along the wild salmon

migration route, which runs through narrow channels off northeastern Vancouver Island. Natural runs of salmon die when they spawn, Morton said, breaking the chain of disease, but salmon farms act as a place where pathogens can breed and spread back and forth, both as juvenile salmon head out to the ocean and mature adults return. “Fish farms definitely amplify sea lice, she said, rejecting the findings of other researchers who suggested the lice aren’t likely playing a pivotal role in the salmon decline. Morton said returning Fraser sockeye began to nose-dive in 1992, the same year many salmon farms began operations on the migration route. She also noted Harrison Lake sockeye are an anomaly among Fraser River runs in that they have bucked the downward trend and done surprisingly well. That run migrates around the west side of Vancouver Island, avoiding the main cluster of salmon farms on the east side, she said. Other sockeye that follow the same route, including Columbia River and Alberni Inlet runs, are also doing “quite well. Another quirk of the Harrison run is that its newly hatched juveniles head out to sea very quickly, unlike most other sockeye that can spend up to a year in their birth lakes. Morton suggested that means the young Harrison fry aren’t in Harrison Lake when mature adults return to spawn, unlike other runs in the Fraser watershed where spawning adults may arrive and mix with juveniles, transmitting disease to them. Industry or government lawyers frequently raised objections and sought to limit Morton’s testimony, which was at times punctuated with applause from supporters at the hearing.

a fast-break offence, No. 3-ranked Mouat pulled off a wild 53-47 road victory over No. 2-ranked Mt. Douglas in Victoria on Friday. Logan was the Hawks’ workhorse, powering a productive running game with 142 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. He also came through with an 85-yard kickoff return for a TD. Bain’s contributions were more diverse, as he made big plays on offence, defence and special teams. The senior was on the receiving end of a 60-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daniel Markin, and also had a long interception return (60 yards) and a long kickoff return (50 yards) that led directly to Mouat majors. “Those two guys were very good for us,” Hawks head coach Denis Kelly said. “They’re explosive guys, very athletic, and they’re able to compete at a high level because they’re in very good shape. Being that they’re seniors now, they can take advantage of all the experience they’ve had along the way. “They’re expected to be team leaders, in terms of on-field performance, and they certainly got a good start to the season.” Markin also connected with Logan Cote for TD passes of 35 and seven yards, and Tanner Strauss rushed for a major to round out the Mouat scoring.

Tough start to Young Stars Tourney for future Heat goalie Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

Joni Ortio’s preseason debut was a bit of a nightmare, but the young goalie from Finland says it won’t cost him any sleep. Ortio, expected to slot in as the Abbotsford Heat’s backup goalie this season behind incumbent starter Leland Irving, was between the pipes for the entirety of the Calgary Flames prospects squad’s 6-1 defeat at the hands of the San Jose Sharks to open the Young Stars Tournament in Penticton on Sunday evening. Along the way, the 20-year-old keeper allowed at least three goals he’d probably like to have back. On other occasions, he was simply the victim of horrendous bounces. While Ortio plans to learn from his mistakes, he also knows a short memory is sometimes a goalie’s best friend. “Just go through the goals and forget about it,” said Ortio, when asked af-

terward about how he’d work through the rough outing. “For me, mistakes, there’s no good thing going to come out of just worrying about the goals and all that other stuff. You just go through it, and forget it.” The first two shots Ortio saw on Sunday went in. On the first goal, the Finnish rookie was caught out of his crease, and Sharks forward Joe Antilla took a centering feed with a yawning cage in front of him. Antilla slammed the puck off the far post, but Charles Inglis followed up and beat Ortio with a wrist shot at the 3:13 mark. Just over two minutes later, Michael Sgarbossa made it 2-0, cruising down the right wing on the rush and picking the top corner over Ortio’s blocker. At the other end of the ice, Chilliwack native Thomas Heemskerk was sparkling in the Sharks crease. Flames forward Max Reinhart turned on the afterburners to earn a shorthanded breakaway, but Heemskerk stoned Continued on A18

Cascades lose on Bronco buzzer beater Dan KINVIG

UFV’s Sam Freeman (12) faces tight checking against Santa Clara.

The Santa Clara Broncos seem to specialize in buzzer-beaters, and they stung the UFV Cascades in overtime on Friday evening. The visiting NCAA Div. 1 squad – Steve Nash’s alma mater – got a three-pointer from Raymond Cowels III that dropped through as time expired in overtime to give the Broncos a highly entertaining 87-84 win over the UFV men’s basketball team. It marked the third consecutive game on Santa Clara’s preseason tour of B.C. that they had gone to overtime. Last Tuesday, Kevin Foster hit a trey from 15 feet back of the three-point line against Trinity

Clothes that work.

Western University to force an extra session, but the Spartans ultimately prevailed 108-100. Thursday’s game at UBC followed a similar script – Santa Clara’s Julien Clarke hit a triple to send it to OT, but the Thunderbirds went on to win 96-83. “Three different players hitting buzzer-beating threes in three straight games,” marveled Santa Clara head coach Kerry Keating. “It’s exciting for our guys. “It’s good to see guys stepping up, making plays.” Santa Clara would go on to win a rematch with UBC 68-63 on Saturday to wrap up their Canadian tour with a 2-2 record. The Cascades led for the majority of Friday’s game at the Envision

Athletic Centre. UFV took a 37-31 lead into halftime, and stretched it to double digits at 58-48 late in the third quarter. “It always sucks to lose close games, whether it’s preseason or whenever,” said Friesen, who finished with a game-high 24 points. “The effort was there, at times, and it’s just our third game together as a team.” Sam Freeman (18 points), Mike James (12) and Jasper Moedt (11) also scored in double figures for the Cascades. • The next preseason games on the schedule for the UFV basketball men are an intrasquad game on Sept. 29 and an alumni game on Oct. 1.

slip a soft backhander under Ortio’s arm at the 7:46 mark. Late in the frame, Chris Breen’s defensive-zone turnover allowed Curt Gogol to break in alone and roof the puck on Ortio. In the third period, San Jose’s Brodie Reid and Sena Acolatse scored to stretch the lead to 6-0, before former Chilliwack Bruins standout Roman Horak scored on a penalty shot to get the Flames on the board in the late going. Afterward, Ortio’s teammates were quick to leap to his defence. “They (the goals) weren’t his fault,” Brodie asserted. “We didn’t help him out too much.” “I think we left him out to dry all the time,” centre Mitch Wahl analyzed. “We gave away quality chances that shouldn’t have been there.” The preseason is a time for every player to shake off a summer’s worth of rust, but Ortio’s early growth curve might be steeper than those of his teammates. After learning the game on the larger Olympicsize ice surfaces of Europe, transitioning to the smaller North American rinks is a tricky endeavor. “I just felt my timing was off, and I was off of my angles,” said Ortio, a sixth-round pick by the Flames in 2009 who served as Finland’s starting goalie at the last two World Junior Championships. “That’s the main thing, when you come to a smaller rink. I think it’s going to be fairly quick to get used to that. At least, I hope so.” There were positive signs for the Flames youngsters – they carried the play for much of the game and outshot the Sharks 39-23, though it should be noted Calgary dressed a much more experienced lineup than did San Jose. “As a whole, I didn’t mind it,” said Heat head coach Troy Ward, who oversaw the Flames’ bench. “The things we taught prior to the game in the last day and a half, I thought we did some good things in those areas. I thought the areas we didn’t work on very much, we probably got exposed there.”

ABRAHAM Kamalini Hannah (nee Edwin)

April 12, 1924 ~ Sept. 9, 2011

Loving and noble wife, mother, grandmother, great-grand-mother, sister, teacher, mentor,

friend, artist and sincere friend, H. Kamalini Abraham left this life to be born to the immortals on Friday, September 9, 2011. As a pioneer, Kamalini left her home town of Bangalore, India as a young professional and started teaching in a small village in Ethiopia, while raising a family. She continued her aspirations in England and finally in Canada. Kamalini enjoyed a life that was filled with compassion, generosity, adventure, and love. Her engaging personality always left individuals with a feeling of warmth and an uplifting sense of care, regardless of creed or culture. High ideals were expressed through her devotion to various organizations such as The Order of the Eastern Star, The Abbotsford Quilters Guild and the United Church of Canada. Her impressive creative talents as a painter, gardener, and quilter were revealed as each endeavour was tackled with enthusiasm and energy. Kamalini’s sense of humour and strong character earned her the respect and admiration of individuals across the world as well as those close to her. She was predeceased by her husband, A.E. FREIGHT SALES Toews, Abram

GASPARINI Marie Winifred (Wheeler) November 1929 ~ August 2011

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Marie, at the age of 81. She left this world August 26th, to join the true love of her life, her beloved husband, Ernie. She will be fondly remembered by her children; Diana MacKay (Cameron), Anita Gasparini (Tom), and Lindsey Gasparini (Julie); her six grandchildren; Caroline, Trevor, Jillian, Carmine, Erica, and Giovanna; and her furry faced companion of the past 18 years, Tigger. Marie was born and raised in Vancouver and, after marrying Ernie, they settled in Abbotsford in 1959 to raise their family. She was a hard working woman who loved the outdoors, was an avid gardener, loved animals, and treasured her time on the family farm. Prior to Ernie’s death in 1987, Marie enjoyed fishing, skiing, curling, bowling, entertaining friends and family at home, travelling, and spending time with Ernie at their second home on Mayne Island. In her later life, she spent many years golfing at Ledgeview and in Palm Desert where she spent the winter months. Marie was feisty, and her greatest legacy will always be her message of hard work, no complaining, and living every day with zest and laughter. A celebration of Marie’s life will take place on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home at 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the B.C. Lung Association or Fraser Valley Child Development. Tributes and condolences may be left at: www.hendersonsabbotsfordfunerals.com

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Abram Toews, who peacefully passed away, surrounded by family and friends, on September 8, 2011, at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission, BC. Left to cherish Dad’s memory is his wife Alma, of 54 years, his daughters, Brenda, Heather, Marion, Bonny, his son Jonathan, 10 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, Isaac and Katerina Toews, and siblings, Isaac, Cornelius, David, Jake and Agatha. Besides his immediate family, he will also be missed by his siblings, Mary, Helen, Kathy, Ferd, Bill, Neil, Elsie and Lydia. Although he touched many hearts with his full, long life, his family was his greatest pride and joy. Those who knew or met Dad, could readily see his love for the Lord and others, through his committed involvement in the New Life Pentecostal Church. Special thanks to the exceptional teams at ARH Palliative Care, and Christine Morrison Hospice. We especially appreciate Ruth Thiessen for her integral role in Dad’s care in the final fourteen months of his journey. A viewing will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd. from 7 pm - 9 pm, Tuesday, September 13. A graveside service will be at Maclure Road Mennonite Cemetery, 10 am, September 14, followed by the Memorial Service to be held at Clearbrook MB Church, 2719 Clearbrook Rd, at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, send donations for a Foreign Missions Project, c/o New Life Pentecostal Church, Abbotsford, BC. Online condolences may be given at: www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com

main highlights. The opening ceremony, which starts at 10 a.m., will feature a grand opening by the First Nations elders, followed by the police and fire honour guard. A parade will then showcase numerous people dressed in national costumes, carrying their flags, representing over 50 countries. Another highlight will be the lantern festival at 6 p.m., said Hakki. Presented in association with the MSA Museum Society, the Abbotsford school district and AbbyFest, it will feature children and adults carrying lanterns while walking through the halls of the building. They will be led by a bag-

piper and three cadets who will be carrying the Canadian, B.C. and Abbotsford flags. Throughout the day there will be non-stop entertainment. A few of the acts that will take to the stage include: Israeli folk dancing, Spanish music, Scottish dancers, Bhangra beat, Ukrainian dance, Chinese songs, break dancing, multilingual songs, Aberdeen highland dancers and Middle Eastern. There will also be a short play by the Abbotsford Children’s Theatre. A Global Village, being hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley, will feature cultural displays from various countries. And at 1 p.m., an international fashion show will take place.

In addition, there will be over 65 booths and 30 tables composed of different vendors. There will also be a large food court featuring an array of cultural food, including butter chicken, bannock, Slavic roast and Italian sausages. Every hour, after noon, raffle prizes will be given away. The winners have to be present when their names are drawn. However, for the grand prize raffle, the winners don’t have to be present. Prizes for the large raffle include a round trip for two on a WestJet flight, earrings donated by Lee’s Fine Jewellery, a weekend stay at the Best Western in Abbotsford and a necklace from Fraser Valley Metis Association. Tickets are $5 for one and $20 for a book of five. For more information on AbbyFest, check out www.abbyfest.com.

Mazda’s Innovative Combustion Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that the “SKYACTIV-G 1.3” tdirect-injection 1.3-liter gasoline engine will be the first of its nextet. generation SKYACTIV technologies to be introduced to the market. esThe breakthrough SKYACTIV-G 1.3 achieves a record high compresne) of sion ratio (for a regular gasoline mass production automobile engine) w rpm. 14.0:1 and exhibits high efficiency, especially under high load at low al In order to avoid knocking – an unavoidable issue with conventional er of high-compression engines – the SKYACTIV-G 1.3 features a number d to new technologies, such as piston cavities that are specially designed cise support ideal combustion, and multi-hole injectors that enable precise fuel injection control. Under its Sustainable Zoom-Zoom vision, Mazda aims to deliver outstandce, and is ing driving pleasure as well as environmental and safety performance, nt by 2015, committed to increasing its global fleet fuel economy by 30 percent compared with the 2008 level.

MAIN FEATURES OF THE SKYACTIV-G 1.3 ENGINE: Highly efficient automobile gasoline engine and the world’s first to achieve a compression ratio of 14.0:1 Multi-hole injectors enable precise fuel injection control for ideal combustion Mazda’s first dual sequential valve timing system (dual S-VT with electronically-operated intake) in combination with the high compression ratio

achieves an unconventional Miller cycle (extremely delayed closure of intake valves) that improves efficiency Compact combustion chambers have a longer stroke for better efficiency Piston cavities are specially designed to support ideal combustion 30 percent less mechanical friction, due to a narrower crankshaft, new roller followers and low-tension piston rings that also reduce oil consumption

Various countermeasures to prevent knocking, including a cooled EGR system An updated version of Mazda’s innovative idling stop system, i-stop, improves fuel economy by eight percent. It operates with a higher frequency, requires less fuel to restart, and achieves a smoother restart A lightweight and highly rigid aluminum alloy engine block

z Classic Hot Rods And Old Time Rock And Roll Saturday, September 1 7, 2011

The Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show returns for its sixth year The streets of downtown Abbotsford will be full of vintage rides and musical entertainment this weekend at the annual Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show. On Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the free family event will feature collector cars and classic bands at George Ferguson Way and Montrose street. Vendors will also be selling their goods, while many will be dishing up delicious ’50s-style food. The proceeds from this year’s car show will once again go to the new Matthew’s House project – an organization that will provide respite for children with lifelimiting disabilities. “What started out six years ago as a small car show in conjunction with the grand opening of Ann Marie’s Cafe, has grown into a major event in downtown Abbotsford. Once again the north

downtown streets will be filled with classic cars, hot rods, the Abbotsford Far m and Country Market, a barbecue with the Trinity Memorial United Church ladies and lots of lively rocking bands,” said Bob King, president of the Historic Downtown Abbotsford Car Show Society. Not only does the event showcase beautiful vehicles, but it also highlights the Abbotsford downtown, said Gerry Palmer of Dhindsa Palmer Law Of fice. “The show is historic and downtown is historic, it ties in the nostalgia and it brings people downtown that might not often visit the area,” said Palmer, who is also a board member on the Historic Downtown Car Show society and a member of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association. “Downtown is so dif ferent than it was 10 years ago, and many people judge it from how they remember it in the

past. So any time we can bring people downtown, and attract a new crowd, it’s a good thing. We’re creating a fun event that brings people downtown to take a look at the area and check out the stores.” Musical entertainment will include the super-charged Blues Brothers Too, who will be wearing their recognizable Blues Brothers gear as they perfor m authentic blues tunes. Local groups, such as 1066 and Flashback will also be perfor ming, as will

Horizon featuring Crystal Hicks. A registration fee of $20 applies for classic car and hot rod owners to show of f their vehicles, indulge in a hamburger and take home a car show t-shirt, decal and goodie bag. Registration for ms are available at Ann Marie’s Cafe, Avenue Body Shop or at www.downtownabbycarshow.com For more infor mation, call 604-857-4915 or visit www.downtownabbycarshow.com.

Matthew’s House

will provide long and short term respite for severely disabled children. Its purpose is to provide a home-like environment for children to feel safe and well cared for by experienced nurses and caregivers. Matthew’s House is not an institution but a retreat for disabled children from every background, race and religion. A place where families can trust that their child will be loved and protected while they can take the freedom to go on vacation or take a restful step back to refuel themselves. Most of us take for granted that we can go to the grocery store with ease or plan a trip for our family without concern. We have the freedom to go anywhere without

fear that our child will not be able to participate or be medically compromised from a new environment. We can hire babysitters without months of required training, go to the park without wheelchair accessibility or go to a restaurant without stares from curious patrons. For many families with high needs children, the ease in which we do everyday activities is a luxury. While Matthew’s House has been granted a 99 year land lease by the city of Abbotsford, it still needs to raise funds for construction and operating expenses. Please consider joining them in helping local families care for their special families. We area all in this together. Matthew’s House needs your help. PHOTOS

Meet Local Hot Rodder Bill Townsend and his collection of vehicles I grew up in Vancouver with a family that didn’t have a lot of money. However, I can remember when I was about 12-years-old reading a hot rod magazine that belonged to a friend’s brothers. In those days, hot rodding wasn’t embraced by the general public like it is today. Since then, public perception has changed, and more people accept and appreciate the hours of work that go into building these cars. I lived with three older cousins for about 3 months while Mom & Dad were building a new home. My cousins were involved in building Model A cars and let me hang around their garage and watch them work . . . I guess this is when I developed a keen interest, wanting to do the same thing when I was older and had more money. As a teenager, I was able to purchase a car for myself, make it roadworthy, and at the same time, make it look like a hot rod. I joined the Shifters car club in 1962 (when I was 18). The club met every other week at Sunset Community Centre in south Vancouver with the goal to promote safe driving and share information with members. The Shifters car club, in turn, belonged to an affiliation of clubs throughout B.C. known as the British Columbia Hot Rod Association. The BCHRA was a group of clubs who shared car related information, promoted safe driving and charitable endeavours. I became the president of the BCHRA more

than 40 years ago and am still a member today. The BCHRA is now the largest car club in Canada. We continue to promote safe driving and are very involved with charitable events such as this one in Abbotsford, and also the Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association for the disabled. My two daughters grew up attending many car shows and car-related events. I think they always thought their Dad was a little bit weird, until they discovered boys used to come around to work on the cars with me. Then, all of a sudden, their Dad seemed quite clever. I now have grandsons who are involved in working on, and having fun with their cars and motorcycles. Over the years I have met many wonderful people because of this hobby. No matter where you travel, in Canada or the U.S., you will often run into people who enjoy the same hobby. When driving street rods, you would be surprised how many people wave at you, give you the thumbs up, take pictures of you or just smile as you drive by. Last year, my wife Dianne and I took about a month driving across northern United States in our 1929 Model A Tudor, towing our 1977 13 foot Trillum trailer. We

then drove into Canada to Newfoundland and made our way to St. Johns where we joined 120 other older vehicles driven by fellow car enthusiasts. As a group, we then drove from Newfoundland to Victoria, B.C. on a two-month planned trip. During this time, car clubs from each province hosted our group to dinners and many special car events in their region. Three months on the road in a 1929 Ford: it doesn’t get any better than that!!
