In the annual merging of cultures in Abbotsford, an estimated 4,500 people visited AbbyFest, the city’s multicultural festival, on Saturday at the Ag-Rec Building at Exhibition Park. Visitors saw demonstrations, entertainment and food from almost 50 different ethnic identities that were represented. The Saudi Culture International Club offered people a chance put themselves in a scene out of the Middle East. They could don traditional Saudi garb and have a photo taken in a traditional Saudi guest room inside their pavilion.
The group represents about 100 Saudi students who attend UFV, and spokesman Mohammad Abaalkhail said they attend AbbyFest every year. “It’s great. It gives people an opportunity to know about other cultures, and get to know each other,” he said. He said people are less likely to make negative judgments about a people or their culture based on stereotypes when they have positive first-hand experience to draw on. Getting the message? Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
B.C.’s tougher impaired driving laws came into effect a year ago today, and most drivers seem to be getting the message. Const. Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police said officers have noticed that more motorists stopped at roadblocks are referencing the new laws, saying they aren’t consuming alcohol before getting behind the wheel. “They’re saying, ‘I’m not drinking

and a $200 fine. The website for the B.C. public safety and solicitor general states that there was a 51 per cent decrease in impaired drivingrelated fatalities from October 2010 to May 2011. MacDonald said stats in Abbotsford have also gone down. He said so far this year, police have issued 215 immediate roadside prohibitions (IRPs) for drivers registering a fail or warning, while about another 300 24-hour suspensions were handed out. During the same period in 2010, Abbotsford Police issued almost 800 24-hour suspensions. A camp that changes lives Local teen selected for event in U.S. capital city Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
An Abbotsford girl whose life changed at burn camp, and who now helps to change other kids’ lives there, got an enthusiastic sendoff Friday from Abbotsford firefighters as she prepared for the ultimate camp in Washington, D.C. from Sept. 24-30. Thankfully, the majority of children never become familiar with burn camp. It is a special week-long event for children with scars from burns – often traumatic scarring that could be life-altering. The camps, funded by the Firefighters Burn Fund, are designed to help the young victims cope. Cassidy Phillips of Abbotsford suffered severe scalding in a domestic accident when she was nine years old. She doesn’t like to talk about the incident, which left her with scars on her neck and head. Local firefighter Krista Harris had been a counsellor at the province’s annual burn camp, one of 40 across North America. She knew how

Cassidy Phillips has been chosen to attend a burn camp in Washington, D.C. important it would be for Cassidy. The camp is about giving kids back their confidence, helping them cope with their injuries and the scars that remain, and it’s about having fun. “It’s the biggest water fight ever,” Harris summarized, describing the ziplining, quad riding, water skiing and other activities in which
the kids take part. “This is the ultimate summer camp, because of the connections we have with sponsors.” Many of the kids have suffered grievous injuries and tragic stories. “Even for me as a firefighter ... it’s just life altering,” said Harris. “The biggest firefighter with the handlebar mustache – even they
will be in tears by Day Two.” Harris told the Phillips family about it, and eventually they sold Cassidy on the idea. “I was really nervous about it, and I’m a shy person,” said Cassidy, who is now 15. “It has been amazing. They are all great people there…” She said the kids actually do not spend a
lot of time talking about their injuries – they put on their bathing suits and get on with summer camp. “Mostly we focus on having fun, rather than talking about it,” she said. “It’s joyful.” Abbotsford firefighter Brian Pederson has been to camp with Cassidy in the past, and remembers what a timid and homesick little girl she was. They let her call home whenever she wanted, which was often. “We had horses coming..., and that kept her there,” he recalls. “Since then, she has just blossomed.” He said burns are always tougher on girls, noting “some of the boys couldn’t care less about their scars.” “Burn camp really gives them that group support to fight with this challenge. She’s exactly who burn camp is for. It’s an outlet, where they can grow as people.” When Cassidy got home from camp the first time, her parents saw a dramatic change. “The first three years

BOMB ALERT A PRANK A bomb scare at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital last Thursday afternoon turned out to be a prank. Members of the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and Abbotsford Police spent about four hours at the hospital, after a visitor reported seeing a suspicious package. The object turned out to be an aerosol can with a medical glove attached to the top of it. Fire officials secured the area, clearing about a 100-metre radius, and called in the RCMP bomb squad to remove the object. While some offices had to be cleared out, the hospital remained open and no patients were evacuated. The hospital did not receive any bomb threats or warning calls, just the report of the object.
E-COMM LAUNCH The Abbotsford Police Department has launched a new radio system, which is already receiving rave reviews from officers, according to Const. Ian MacDonald. The digital E-Comm system began last week, replacing the former analog system and providing better transmission among officers and dispatch. MacDonald said police previously lost communication in areas such as in Bradner and Sumas Prairie but that is no longer the case. The system is currently in a test period before its full launch in early October.
HOUSE FIRE A home on the AbbotsfordAldergrove border suffered extensive interior damage early Monday morning. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and the Langley Township fire department were called to the blaze – located at the corner of Station Road and Fraser Highway – at about 4 a.m. When fire crews arrived, flames were coming out of one side of the residence. Nobody was home at the time. The blaze is being investigated as suspicious.

They may have a glass of wine, but that’s it,” said Ian Tostenson, president and CEO of the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association. The Criminal Code still lists a .08 bloodalcohol level as the legal limit, with the province’s .05 limit serving as a “warning.” But as of Sept. 20, 2010, blowing above the legal limit can result in an immediate 90-day driving ban and a $500 fine. were the biggest difference. “They have more self-confidence and have a more positive outlook,” said her father, Jeff Phillips. Pederson said Cassidy, who now goes every year, is the kind of young person who quietly offers peer-to-peer support in a way that can’t be done by the firefighters, nurses and doctors who are burn camp counsellors. The International Burn Camp in Washington, D.C. is described as “a weeklong, once-in-a-lifetime trip where they tour monuments, memorials, and museums; visit the White House and the Capitol; meet national leaders; and spend time with local
firefighters.” It is the model for burn survivor support. Cassidy is the first person from Abbotsford to be invited to attend. At the sendoff she received congratulations and gifts from Mayor George Peary, and among the gifts from firefighters was a Flip video camera so Cassidy could document her trip. “It means a lot. There are a lot of kids who would love to do this, and I’m so excited,” she said. Harris said it also means a lot to Abbotsford firefighters, who raise $20,000 per year for burn camp through their annual boot drive, and offer their time as counsellors. “She’s the epitome of a burn camp success story.”

of the Fraser Valley Metis Association said the festival is a great way for his group to get its message out. While the heart of the Metis nation is in Manitoba, Hall said there are 44,000 who have moved to British Columbia. “We’ve parked the skidoo and bought a canoe,” he said. He’s the founder of the local association, which holds monthly
meetings and operates a training centre teaching everything from culinary arts to carpentry. He’s a big fan of AbbyFest. “We get to share our culture, and who we are,” he said, pointing to another man making traditional rattles, and inviting visitors to try a buffalo burger or pemmican. “When you get this many cultures in one building, it says a lot. Canada truly is a multicultural country,”
said Hall. “I’m just sitting here, enjoying the world.” There was much to see, from demonstrations of belly dancing and Sun Hang Do martial arts, to music and dancing on the stage from a wide variety of groups. It was a place to buy carvings from Zimbabwe, and get lessons in playing the sitar and other traditional Indian instruments. Founder and orga-
nizer Musleh Hakki said attendance has grown steadily, from under 3,000 the first year to about 4,500 on Saturday, and there was more stage entertainment and new booths in the show’s fourth year. He said the organizers are already beginning to plan the fifth event, on Sept. 15, 2012 at Ag-Rec. “We look forward to your suggestions of how we can make it better,” said Hakki.

he believes the city “has a brand new airport.” And the city wants to capitalize on it. “We are poised to attract more and more investors to the airport. We have to let them know that land is available and we’re open for business,” said Peary. Companies like Chinook Helicopters, which trains pilots from around the world, and Cascade Aerospace, which Peary called “a major tenant and major employer,” will help attract more industry opportunities.
One area of concern, that is shared by both Abbotsford and Vancouver airports, is a loss of travelers flying north to south, to U.S. airports such as Bellingham. Government fees and charges make it difficult to meet prices offered by American counterparts. Peary said other mayors and airport authority chairs, who are close to the border, face similar issues. “I’d like to lead a delegation to Ottawa” to ask for assistance in managing those fees, said Peary. “We just want to compete.”

Weighing homework
The carefree days of summer are at an end, and with the return to school comes the dreaded homework. What is homework and how much should a child get each day? These are common questions, and are difficult to answer because teachers and parents often differ on homework and its purpose. Surveys have found many parents are worried that homework eats into family time, and getting kids to do it is stressful. Although some parents appreciate the structure homework provides, others think it gets in the way of sports and other activities, and delays bedtime. Teachers don’t agree on the value of homework, either. Some educators view it as a way to extend learning; others see it as important for mastering skills like math or a new language; and yet others think it’s a waste of time. How much homework is sent home entirely depends on the teacher as there are no policies on homework
at the district or provincial level. There is, however, a growing consensus that homework shouldn’t be just busy work, but should help children make connections and deepen their understanding of classroom lessons. Many teachers are moving towards project-based learning, in which students come up with a project of inquiry, such as analysing the value of a local stream. This would be a case where homework is useful as students get to work on a project of their own choosing. There are many resources for parents but it’s not always obvious where to go and what to do about this topic. Learn Now BC (www.learnnowbc.ca/ services/homeworkhelp.aspx) is one such resource. But most parents will have to use their best judgment when it comes to homework. If they think the quantity appears to outweigh the quality, it may be time to make a phone call. – Black Press
Perhaps it’s my turn to take some heat Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand If you read the previous pages of this edition, you will understand why I no longer will be seen downtown wearing a tatty quilted shirt and grubby jeans; or failing to say “hi” or wave to everyone I meet. For those who, for some reason, are reading this first, then I confess that I have decided to seek a seat on city council. As most regular readers will know, I have often taken councillors to task. I’ve never been shy of expressing an opinion, never hesitated to be outspoken on issues I believe are wrong, or not in the best interest of our community, particularly those that do not appear to address future growth and planning. So, after months of wrangling with the idea of seeking office, a decision
was reached that if I believe change is necessary, the only way to bring it about is to run for office and see if people agree with me. I also believe that if I have the freedom to criticize the actions of council members, then I should also be equally willing to face criticism. Most actions of council are appropriate. However, there are also occasions when decisions have been made that have not been well thought out, or have ramifications that adversely affect our future and the wise use of our tax dollars. But this space is not the venue to debate that … that’s the purpose of an election campaign, and over the next couple of months I will be listening to people, learning about their vision for the future of our community, and talking about what I believe needs to change. Therefore, this will be my last column about the actions of city council. If you decide I am a worthy candidate, then any future comments will be made at the council table. If I am not elected, then who cares what
I say about the goings-on in city hall. Also, to be fair to other candidates who are seeking your support, I will be taking a four-week hiatus (don’t you love such words) from column
After 25 years in the newspaper business, almost 18 years in the back rooms of provincial politics, behind the scenes in great many civic elections, I am now a wannabe politician. writing from the time nominations close until election day. In the meantime, I am going to find a copy of Roberts Rules of Order, just in case I am successful. After all, it would be unseemly to use ‘unparliamentary’ language such as “that’s
stupid” or “don’t be an idiot,” since I have been known to utter similar epitaphs on things or people when foolish proposals are being considered. Speaking up or out has never been one of my “short suits.” So there you have it. After 25 years in the newspaper business, almost 18 years in the back rooms of provincial politics, behind the scenes in a great many civic elections, I am now a “wannabe” politician. I can’t do it alone, and I’m going to need a lot of help. Also to demonstrate just how modern I am, and until now mostly foreign to me, I’ll try to keep you informed through, among other things, Twitter and Facebook. If you want to offer support, or tell me I’m an idiot, you can email me at markrushton@shaw.ca. Otherwise, and as uncomfortable as I am with cocktail party chatter, look for me in the community, glad-handing to ingratiate myself with the electorate. And don’t be shy about telling me exactly what you think.

Third man charged in double murder
Vikki HOPES
Abbotsford News
A third person has been charged with the 2008 murders of Lisa Dudley and Guthrie McKay of Mission. Bruce Main, 64, of Maple Ridge, joins co-accused Jack Douglas Woodruff, 52, of Surrey and Justin Andrew MacKinnon, 25, of no fixed address in two counts each of first-degree murder. Main made his first appearance yesterday in Abbotsford provincial court and is next scheduled for this Thursday, Sept. 22 – exactly three years since the murders. He has no previous criminal record in B.C., according to the provincial court database. Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said police are releasing few details about Main’s arrest or background, other than to confirm his charges. Dudley, 37, and her boyfriend McKay, 33, were found by a neighbour on Sept. 22, 2008 in the 31000 block of Greenwood Drive in Mission four days after a 911 call was received that several shots had been fired in the area. McKay was pronounced dead on the scene. Dudley was in severe medical distress and died en route to hospital.

Probation for comedy show disturbance Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
One of the men who was part of a hostile mob at the Abbotsford Arts Centre on the night of a Punjabi comedy show early this year has been given a year of probation. Chamkaur Sidhu, 37, pleaded guilty to a charge of mischief in Abbotsford Provincial Court on Friday afternoon. Sidhu smashed the window of the arts centre on the night of March 18, When
the Naughty Baba Back in Town show was plaing. He was part of a crowd that became increasingly unruly as they were told the show was full, that they would not be allowed in, and the doors were locked. His lawyer, Jack Harris, said Sidhu was among a number of people who had purchased a ticket, but were denied admission. Other patrons showed up earlier, and their children were given

seats, even though they had not purchased tickets for them. Those who arrived later with tickets could not get in. Harris said his client, who was among a large group that was drinking prior to the show, was banging on the door window when the glass shattered. The surging crowd pushed Sidhu into the broken glass. He rolled up his sleeve, showing the court a scar on his arm

“He did not go down there that evening to cause any trouble,” noted Harris. He was granted a conditional discharge on the mischief charge. He will be on probation for 12 months with orders to keep

sports Mission upsets Mouat Dan Kinvig 604-851-4527

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, September 20, 2011
Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
In the wake of the Mission Roadrunners’ stunning 22-15 win over the W.J. Mouat Hawks on Friday, Hawks head coach Denis Kelly paid the victors a heady compliment. “They could play at the AAA level any time,” Kelly said. “They’re legitimate.” Friday’s game, played before an enthusiastic crowd at Mouat Field, was a fascinating matchup between teams who both came in ranked No. 2 in the province – the Hawks in AAA, and the Roadrunners in AA. In one fell swoop, Mission validated the level of play on the small-school circuit, and picked up what head coach Kevin Watrin called the biggest win in the nine-year history of senior varsity football at the school. “Last year, we had a really exciting quarter-final victory in the snow against Seaquam,” he noted. “But I think this probably tops it slightly. It was an
exhibition game, but it was against a fantastic program and a great coaching staff.” The Hawks led 12-7 at the half, finding the end zone on a 30yard screen pass from Daniel Markin to Devin Logan, and on a one-yard QB sneak by Markin. But the Roadrunners rallied to tie the game 15-15, and then got the game-winning TD with 34 seconds left in the fourth quarter when quarterback Kevin Wiens hit Hadley Gwyn for a 22-yard major. The victory carried a bit of added significance for Watrin, who served as a Hawks assistant coach while student teaching at Mouat in 1995. “It’s pleasing and satisfying,” he said when Kelly’s words of praise were relayed to him. “There’s been a number of us who have been around for the nine years and put in a lot of long hours. In many ways, it’s a cumulative experience with all the boys right through the program.”

T.J. Brodie is looking to build on his stellar rookie campaign with the Abbotsford Heat
CALGARY – T.J. Brodie and Chris Breen were defensive partners with the Abbotsford Heat last season, and they found themselves linked once again as Calgary Flames training camp opened on Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The erstwhile Heat duo have risen to the top of the list of defensive prospects in the Flames organization, and both are intent on making their case this week to stick with the NHL club. In essence, they’re at the same spot in their hockey careers. But how they got here could hardly be more different. Brodie and Breen, as it happens, go

way back – they spent the better part of three seasons playing junior hockey together with the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit. From that point, their paths diverge. Brodie’s road to the cusp of NHL employment has been fairly straightforward. The speedy puck-mover from Chatham, Ont. was picked by the Flames in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL entry draft, and he validated that selection by racking up big numbers with the OHL’s Spirit and Barrie Colts. Last fall, Brodie cemented his status as a big-time prospect with a stellar preseason performance, tying Jarome Iginla for the Flames’ goal-scoring lead with
four tallies in five exhibition games. He surprised many by making the openingnight roster, though his stint in Calgary lasted just three games before he was reassigned to Abbotsford. Brodie had some early growing pains with the Heat – head coach Jim Playfair was in his grill on a frequent basis about tightening up defensive-zone play. But the youngster made strides in that area, and he was the Heat’s representative at the AHL all-star game. He finished the year second on the Heat scoring list with 34 points (five goals, 29 assists) in 68 games – numbers which are even more impressive considering Continued on A17

Abbotsford finished dead last in AHL scoring last season. “There’s a little bit more pressure after last year,” the 21-year-old noted. “But I expect a lot. I expect to have a better camp than I did last year. In comparison to Brodie, Breen’s circuitous route to top prospect status has been downright dizzying. The 6’7”, 225-pound behemoth was a classic late bloomer. The Uxbridge, Ont. native was never picked in the NHL entry draft, and as his junior career was winding down, he was all set to attend university and begin the next phase of life. But the Flames came calling in the spring of 2010, and inked Breen to an AHL contract. He had a terrific rookie campaign with the Heat last season, establishing himself as a reliable shutdown defender. Breen was relatively anonymous when he arrived in Calgary for training camp last fall. This time around, he figures to get a serious look with the big club. Not bad for a guy who thought his hockey career was all but done a year ago. “It’s kind of been a dream, actually,” he marveled. “A lot had to do with the coaching I got last year and the opportunity I had. (Matt) Pelech got hurt, and I ended up getting into some games. Then I just kept progressing from there, soaking up as much as I could and working as hard as possible.”

UFV’s visitors victorious
Home-opening weekend didn’t go as planned for the University of the Fraser Valley soccer teams, as the visitors won all four games at Bateman Park. The Cascades women, ranked sixth in the nation going in, dropped a 2-1 decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday and fell 3-1 to Alberta on Sunday. After a scoreless first half on Saturday, UFV’s Megan Webster opened the scoring in the 65th minute. But the Huskies rallied to knot the score on Megan Schenher’s top-corner strike from 30 yards out, and Elizabeth Hudon scored the winner in the final minute of regulation. On Sunday, the No. 3-ranked Pandas jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half, before Webster’s second goal of the weekend got the Cascades
to within one. Alberta’s Amanda Black got the insurance marker in the late going, as the UFV women fell to 2-2 on the season. In men’s action, Saskatchewan striker Jerson Brandica-Hamilton lit up the Cascades for three goals in the first half on Saturday, powering the Huskies to a 4-1 win. Sasa Plavsic, in the 49th minute, notched the lone UFV goal. The Cascades came with a better effort against Alberta on Sunday, and Plavsic’s goal in the 25th minute staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead. But the Golden Bears battled back for a 2-1 win on goals by Kellen Stenger and Milan Timotijevic. UFV fell to 1-3 on the season. The Cascades soccer teams hit the road this weekend to face the Calgary Dinos on Saturday and the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday.

Murano puts ‘fun’ in functionality
All New 2011 Nissan Murano Price: $34,498 Engine: 3.5 Litre DOHC V6 Power: 260 Hp What’s Best: Provides a richness in it’s materials that stans out in it’s class What’s Interesting: You get an SUV with driving dynamics of a sports sedan complete with AWD
One of the most striking aspects of the Murano is its body, which imparts a “modern art” feel, but still maintains the “Murano-ness” that consumers have enjoyed since the first generation’s debut. “When someone looks at the Murano, they instantly recognize it by its distinctive Murano style,” said McDade. “Its bold design provides a rewarding sense of style and individuality. Others have tried to imitate it, but there is only one true Murano.” SEE PAGE B05

Exemplifying warmth with modern style
The original Nissan Murano, launched in 2002 as a 2003 model, set new standards for style and sportiness in the expanding mid-size crossover sport-utility vehicle marketplace, becoming, in essence, a “class of one.” For 2011, Murano returns with a new trim, the Murano SV AWD, which will offer customers the many premium conveniences (dual-panel moonroof, heated front seats, 2GB Music Box, RearView Monitor and more) they want - with a cloth interior. Nissan has also given the Murano S AWD model a new look for 2011 with a revised Front Grill, Bumper and Tail Lamp. For 2011, only one package is available (the Tech Package), with leather interior available on just the SL and LE models. “With modern design, dynamic performance and ‘business class,’ the 2011 Murano will continue to stand out,” said
Mark McDade, Director, Marketing, Nissan Canada Inc. “The only major change will be more accessible premium conveniences with the new SV trim, which will give those drivers that prefer the cloth interior easier access to some great technology.” The Murano’s exterior features a wide front end with a dynamic front fascia design, a wide grille with large integrated headlights, strong body side character lines with pronounced 18-inch or 20-inch wheels and tires and a distinctive rear end set off by an expansive rear glass area and LED taillights. The SV model also has a new front grille, bumper and tail lamp design for 2011. Murano’s interior plays on the “mobile suite” theme - complete with centre stack design, available double-stitched leatherappointed seating surfaces, use of premium materials such as leather and aluminum
and a variety of storage compartments and ambient lighting. The 2011 Murano is powered by a 260-horsepower 3.5-litre DOHC V6 backed by an advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission), with Intuitive All-Wheel Drive drivetrain. Murano also features a D-platform and state-of-the-art steering for ride comfort and precise handling. Multiple technology features are available on the 2011 Murano, including standard Nissan Intelligent Key System® and Push Button Ignition. Available technology includes RearView Monitor, iPod® interface, Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System, XM® Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately), a 2.0GB or 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive, Radio Data System (RDS), Nissan Navigation System, 7-inch colour display and much more.
