Cops for Cancer A team of 21 riders will cover more than 800 kilometres in nine days (Sept. 22-30) in the Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley. The event, which features riders from law enforcement and emergency services personnel, raises funds to help beat childhood cancers. On Monday, riders made visits to a number of Abbotsford elementary and secondary schools, talking to students about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. On Saturday the group made several stops, including Tradex, which featured a $4,000 donation from Fraserway RV and $1,500 from Tradex staff.

“I wished I had gone sooner!”
Invisible.
Finally! Affordable.
Hear life now. Wearing hearing aids is not new to me as I’ve had them for close to eight years. I had been reading about the newer technology and smaller hearing aids that are now available, but I was hesitant to go through the process of getting new ones. The last pair I got took weeks of adjusting, screeching, not a pleasant experience. Once I got them tweaked they seem to do the trick. Although I didn’t purchase my Àrst pair at Crystal Hearing centre I had heard good things about them, so I went in and explained that I might want to buy new hearing aids. The no pressure approach and the new technology of my “in the ear” hearing aids made the purchase easy and hassle free. I wish I would have gone earlier! The best thing was the tweaking process was almost non existent and there is no old screeching in my ear anymore. If you have older hearing aids, don’t waste time get in and see the professionals at Crystal Hearing Centre today! Walter M.

Autumn arrived with a vengeance on Sunday as high winds and at times torrential rain hit the Fraser Valley. Wind, gusting up to 60 km/h, knocked down trees and left close to 5,000 Abbotsford and Mission residents without power during the afternoon and evening. BC Hydro crew were out Sunday and Monday, repairing lines across the city. Power was out for about five hours in some areas, while most problems were fixed in under two hours. “We got a lot of everything on Sunday,” said David Jones, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.
“Rain, thunder, wind.” Hope was hardest hit, with winds in excess of 80 km/h. The wet, windy weather continued on Monday with 20 to 30 mm of rain predicted. However, Environment Canada did not see a need to issue a wind warning because gusts did not hit the 80 km/h mark. “It’s a bit stormy for September, but nothing recordbreaking,” said Jones. Today’s forecast is for more rain, but the wind will ease to more seasonal levels. Sun is expected on Wednesday.

Dual bank robberies Police believe two men worked together
Abbotsford Police believe that two simultaneous bank robberies on Saturday afternoon were committed by two men working together. Both occurred at 2:10 p.m. at Coast Capital Savings and RBC in the 31900 block of South Fraser Way. Lone men entered each business and produced notes demanding cash at the transaction counters. They did not produce any weapons.
Both men were Caucasian. One was 6’ 2” tall, in his early- to mid-20s, unshaven, with a thin build and gapped teeth. He was wearing a red and black baseball cap, a grey T-shirt and blue jeans. The other was about 6’ tall, in his late 20s, clean-shaven, with a slim build, large bulging eyes and red marks on his face. He wore a camouflage baseball cap, dark T-shirt and blue jeans. Const. Ian MacDonald said
police believe the two coordinated the robberies. They do not consider the robberies to be linked to three recent thefts that occurred at local Subway restaurants. Patrol division officers and members of the forensic identification unit are gathering evidence, including video. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-8595225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Three-car crash A three-car accident on Highway 1 in Abbotsford early Sunday morning resulted in two people being airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster with serious injuries. Fire, police and ambulance personnel were dispatched at about 2:30 a.m. to the collision, which occurred in the eastbound lanes of the freeway just west of the Mt. Lehman Road interchange. RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks said it is believed that a BMW rear-ended an Acura, causing the BMW to roll into the ditch on the south side of the road. Marks said the Acura then spun and came to a rest sideways in the fast lane of the freeway. The driver got out of his car to check on the damage, and it was then T-boned and sheered in half by a third vehicle – a Nissan Maxima. The lone male occupants of the BMW and the Acura were transported to hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the Maxima – a man and woman in their late 20s – were transported by air ambulance to Royal Columbia Hospital in New Westminster. Marks said the cause of the first collision is not yet known. Alcohol is not believed to be involved, but the speed of the Nissan could be a factor, she said.
Animals rescued from barn blaze
Woman treated for smoke inhalation A woman was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation after saving chickens, goats and potbellied pigs from an Abbotsford barn that went up in flames on Friday night. Fire crews were called to the blaze – located at 35321 Page Road – at about 6:45 p.m. after a neighbour reported seeing smoke coming from the combination garage/ workshop and barn on the property. When fire crews arrived, they found fire originating from the
garage portion. The owner of the property had rescued several animals from the barn area, and was treated on scene before being take to hospital for further examination. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said 30 firefighters and eight trucks from five fire halls were on the scene, and the fire was quickly extinguished. The cause is still under investigation, but is believed to be electrical. Damage is estimated at $20,000.

He said it is not yet known if the men who were arrested knew they were selling the more-potent drug or whether they believed it was doda, a derivative of opium. Doda is a fine powder which is made by
grinding the husks and seeds of the poppy plant. It contains morphine and codeine. Opium is drained from the seed pods of mature poppies and is sold as a powder or dark-brown solid that is smoked, eaten or injected.

Worker safety first The details of the tragedy at a Langley mushroom farm on Sept. 5, 2008 finally emerged last week, as the owners of the farm were in court after pleading guilty to numerous health and safety charges. Three workers died and two others suffered permanent brain damage. They were asked to go into a confined space to clear the blockage in a valve containing the chicken manure, straw and gypsum, which are used to make mushroom compost. This came after the farm owners had called a plumber to the scene. He was unable to fix the blockage and asked them to call a sewer pumping service. Instead, the job fell to the workers. As outlined in court, they were never given any information on working in confined spaces, nor was there any occupational health and safety training offered. Many of the people who work on such farms, in Langley and elsewhere in the Fraser Valley, are relatively new
immigrants to Canada. They often get the jobs because they have limited job prospects and have some connections to the farm owners. They are also willing to work for low wages at jobs which involve hard physical labour. It is absolutely essential that anyone who hires other people to work in a business offer basic occupational health and safety training. It is also important that when there are hazards, such as confined spaces, employees be fully familiar with the dangers involved. They need to know when they can say “no.” The B.C. Federation of Labour has taken a major interest in this case and deserves credit for highlighting the importance of employers following basic safety practices. Farm workers are just as valuable as any employee on any job site. This case points out the need to ensure they fully understand all the risks of any job they are asked to perform. – Black Press

Rushton On the
Other Hand There’s nothing like the smell of wet dog, large hairy soaks-up-water-likea-sponge dog, to remind you that fall has arrived. And these past few days it truly has … particularly Sunday with incredible winds, driving rain and inevitable power failures. Other than pongy pup, fall also conjures up fond memories of the smell of campfire smoke on cool autumn evenings, preferably enjoyed with a close friend in some remote corner of the province. Sunny days that begin with a crisp frost, the leaves spectacular as they transition in their death throes from vibrant green to every shade of yellow, orange and red. In anticipation of this fall, before I decided to attempt a career change, I had ordered a new rifle scope, with necessary attachment. When it
arrived recently I eagerly checked it out, and determined with much disappointment, and no small measure of annoyance, that either I was sent a faulty device or it was damaged in transit. For, look as I might through the lenses, there was no clarity to the image. Phone calls and messages to the shipper were made, and the response was excellent … essentially: no problem, return it for replacement. Receiving something in the mail is one thing for me, wrapping it all back up and returning it is another. Finally, this weekend I thought I’d better get on with the job before the “best before return” date passed. So I decided to have a look through one of my other scopes just to determine, and describe in the return message, how bad the new one was before sending it off. Lo and behold, it was “damaged,” too. Then the light bulb flashed on . . . is it the scope or is it me? I looked through it, as I normally would, with my regular glasses. Blurry. Without glasses – same thing.
Then I tried my “computer” glasses, the ones that allow me to see things between two and six feet from my eyes, as opposed to my distance vision appliance. Voila! The image through the new scope was crisp, as it now was through
Among other things, I bragged that my vision hadn’t changed since I first required glasses 45 years ago. the others as well. A day or two before, I’d spent an evening with friends and among other things bragged that my vision hadn’t changed since I first required glasses following an accident 45 years ago. I have now discovered I was wrong, yet oddly everything still appears crisp – I can count the leaves on a tree at 300 metres – through my various glasses,
or without them close up … except for those infernal scopes (and I’m now also assuming binoculars, camera lenses and what have you). Among all this there must be a message … either I give up doing everything that requires more than simply “seeing,” or I receive a thorough eye examination and have some sort of bitri-multi-focal vision device concocted. After all, being out in the bush is one thing, carrying every kind of glasses with you, shuffling between them each time you try to do something means the inevitable – I’m bound to lose at least one pair. If it’s the long distance version, then finding my way home might be a bit of a problem. So, this fall instead of a trip to the back of beyond where in past years all I worried about was getting smoke in my eyes during those campfire evenings, I’ll be travelling to the optometrist. Along with that will also be the acceptance that age, rather than accident, must be catching up to me.

letters As your readers may recall, the communities of the Fraser Valley struggled for two years to get full university status for what was then, the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV). We formed a nonprofit society, the Friends of UCFV, with about 900 paid members including community leaders, business people, and students. We raised funds and proceeded to lobby the provincial government to grant UCFV full university status. We successfully argued that this rapidly growing region seriously lacked the post-secondary opportunities as compared to other regions of B.C., and this was reflected in the relatively low numbers of postsecondary students from the central and eastern Fraser Valley who were able to access a university education – about one half of the rate as compared to the Greater Vancouver area. In April 2008, we finally won. UCFV became UFV – the University of the Fraser Valley. I naively believed that the fight was won and our newly designated UFV would quickly grow and provide the number of seats necessary to make up the post-secondary educa-
tion deficiency, and provide our region with the same opportunities which are easily accessible in other parts of our province. Fast forward three years, and we find that UFV has exceeded our expectations. Unfortunately, the operating and capital funding necessary to grow the number of seats has not followed the rapidly increasing demand from our underserviced region
and we find ourselves with a wait list of 5,800 students and a university struggling to cope with pressure on both their facilities and operating budgets. The status quo has not really changed over the past three years. Yes, our university has managed to expand their courses and to increase their numbers, educating five per cent more students than their funding, but much of this success has been

It’s time for the provincial government to take a hard look at the operating grants provided to the university system, particularly the institutions in underserved and rapidly growing regions like the Fraser Valley. The public will get a second say on a 31-lot single family development being proposed on the northwest slope of Vedder Mountain. Council has given first reading to proposed zoning changes
Drive generates 14,000 pounds of food A province-wide food drive resulted in more than 11,000 homes being visited in Abbotsford and Mission with almost 14,000 pounds of nonperishable items collected for local food banks. The B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive took place Sept. 17 in the two communities and involved 250 volunteers providing more than 850 hours of service. The event involved local residents filling previously delivered grocery bags with food and leaving them on their doorsteps for pickup, or dropping them off in person. In addition, local sponsors contributed $24,000 in material and financial support. The food drive was sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and Food Banks B.C.
that would allow Hayes Creek Valley Enterprises, owned by Anthony Penner, to subdivide the properties located at the 41100 to 41300 block of Old Yale Road. The proposal will now move to a public hearing to be scheduled in the coming weeks. This is the second time the project has gone to such a hearing. In August of 2010 council agreed to hold a public hearing on the same project, which it later rejected. A similar application was made in 2005, but it was turned down due to opposition from
nearby farmers. Council was divided on whether to grant first reading. Couns. Simon Gibson, Moe Gill and Lynne Harris were opposed to the idea of going back to the public. “There were numerous objections when it came to us the first time,” said Coun. Harris. She said it is an isolated site and is a “great distance” from public transportation and other services. “It significantly impacts the farmers in the area.” The project, which Coun. Gibson called

Although he voted in favor of moving forward, Abbotsford Mayor George Peary said it is “anything but smart growth. “What we’ve done is voted to take it into the public domain to see what they think,” he said. Council will listen to the public response and make a decision after the hearing. Developers who have projects declined, are permitted to reapply every six months.

In their regular season opener, the Abbotsford Pilots effectively illustrated why “playing a full 60 minutes” is a classic hockey cliché. Goals from Christopher Vinette and Kevin Lourens in the final minute of the third period lifted the local junior B squad to a 5-3 victory over the North Delta Devils at MSA Arena. Pilots head coach Jim Cowden felt it was a rather ragged performance by his squad, a product of the fact it’s still early in the season. “Our team play isn’t near where it should be,” he noted. “But you know what, we’ve only practiced two or three times together. So we’ve got lots of work to do.” The Pilots raced out to a 3-1 lead
through 20 minutes, with Justin Dorey, Scott Rae-Douglas and Ryan Stewart supplying the offence. The Devils clawed their way back to even thanks to a pair of power-play goals from Manuveer Mahil. But with overtime looming, Vinette struck on the power play, coming out of the corner and ripping a wrist shot past Devils goalie Alexander Ahnert. Lourens, with four seconds left, sealed the win with an empty-netter. Goalie Riley Parker stopped 21 of 24 shots to earn the win. The Pilots are back in action on Tuesday evening, when they visit the Delta Ice Hawks (7:30 p.m., Ladner Leisure Centre). They return home to host the Port Moody Black Panthers on Friday (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).

Two ties for UFV soccer women The University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team posted a pair of draws on a weekend road trip to Alberta. The Cascades opened the journey with a 1-1 tie against the Calgary Dinos on Saturday. Danika Snook scored off a pass from Dariann Kloot just before halftime, but the Dinos equalized in the first minute of the second
half. On Sunday, Ellen Kuyer’s goal in the 65th minute lifted the UFV women to a 1-1 draw with the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Ball-hawking D paces Mouat Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
A larcenous defence paved the way for the W.J. Mouat Hawks to blow out the Carson Graham Eagles 49-14 on the road in North Vancouver on Friday. The ball-hawking Hawks picked off Eagles quarterback Darius Lamiere four times, with Deion Bain, Daniel Markin, Tanner Strauss and Crysthian Rivas doing the honours. Bain took his interception back 60 yards for a touchdown. “We had a good plan,

and we really scouted their favourite pass plays, so we were in the right position,” Hawks coach Denis Kelly said. One week after a disappointing loss to the Mission Roadrunners, the Hawks (2-1) authored a solid bounce-back effort. Nathan Henczel got the ball rolling, scoring on a 47-yard reverse, and running back Devin Logan posted a trio of TDs – two rushing, and one on a punt return. Markin, the Hawks’ QB, found the end zone on a one-yard plunge,
and hit David Park for a 15-yard scoring pass. HANSEN 28, LANGLEY 6 All four Abbotsford high school teams were victorious on the road on Friday. In Langley, Harpreet Dhaliwal turned in a tremendous effort in his varsity quarterback debut, throwing a TD pass to Jason Sidhu and rushing for another to lead the Rick Hansen Hurricanes (1-2) to their first victory of the season. Dhaliwal typically plays receiver, but with starting pivot Alex

Ho (broken kneecap) and backup Jeevin Uppal (calf) both out with injuries, he was pressed into QB duty. “We were down to Plan C, I guess,” Hansen coach Paul Gill said with a chuckle. “Harpreet did a great job. Basically, he’ll play whatever spot we need, and he’s the kind of guy who can do it.” Running back Jordon Gmur had a huge game with 19 carries for 195 yards and two TDs, while Arsh Gill (six tackles, one sack) and Raj Jindal (five tackles) led the Hansen defence. ABBY COLLEGIATE 35, MOSCROP 6 Quarterback Carter Williams turned in an efficient performance to lead the Abby Collegiate Panthers (1-1) to their first win of the season over Tier II Moscrop in Burnaby. Williams completed 12 of 15 passes for 202 yards, including scoring strikes to Dallas Yassinsky, Jesse Neufeld and Dillon McGuire. Yassinsky added a 57-yard punt return major, and Tanner Storoshenko scored on a two-yard run for the Panthers. “It was nice to see the offence come together,” said head coach Jay Fujimura, pointing out that Williams completed passes to seven different receivers while the offensive line didn’t allow a single sack. “We’re getting better each week.” BATEMAN 34, HUGH BOYD 21 In Richmond, the Bateman Timberwolves (3-0) maintained their undefeated record with a big win over Hugh Boyd. Kolanos sparks Heat past UBC Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
Three days into Abbotsford Heat training camp, Krys Kolanos is carving out quite a compelling comeback story. The NHL veteran, on a tryout with Abbotsford after sitting out a season and a half following major hip surgery, was the Heat’s best player on Sunday evening as they edged the UBC Thunderbirds 3-1 in exhibition action at South Surrey Arena. Kolanos opened the scoring in the second period, hammering a one-timed slap shot past UBC goalie Jordan White on the power play. “He was like a man against boys, Heat head coach Troy Ward said of Kolanos. “We kind of figured that would be the way it was, but he hasn’t played in over a year. Ryan Howse and Bryan Cameron also scored for the Heat, while Andrew Engelage and David Brown split the goaltending chores. Tributes to family and friends
Marion (nee Passenger) 1919 ~ 2011
With deep sadness we announce the passing of a dear and precious soul. Marion (Josephine) Lipsey passed away peacefully at the Cottage Hospital in Abbotsford on September 22, 2011, with daughter Judy at her side. She will be forever missed by her loving children, Judy Dunning, Linda (Tom) Ramirez, Robert Lipsey and Connie (Brian) Blacklock; grandchildren, Kerry, Kim, Chris, Pat, Brad, and Aimee; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; her sisters Pearl, and Tressa; and all her many relatives. Her thoughtful tender heart and wonderful sense of humour won her many friends who will also remember her with great affection. She is predeceased by her loving husband and life’s partner of over 70 years, Winston (Winse); her parents, Frank and Mary Passenger; and her brother Alvin. She and Winse moved to the Mt. Lehman area from Saskatchewan in 1953, and became a well known and liked part of the community. After a couple years in Penticton, they returned to Abbotsford where mom always felt most at home. Mom was usually a stay at home wife and mother, one of the hardest, yet for her the most rewarding career choices she could have ever made. She cooked, cleaned, put on bandages, guided us, laughed, and wept with us. She was humble and forgiving and taught us our bedtime prayers. Mom enjoyed music and dancing, curling, both as a participant and spectator, she loved watching the Canucks games, and she liked reading, knitting, preparing meals and baking. She was generous and hospitable. Her pies and cookies were always the best. She loved all her family and found great joy in her many grandchildren. We are proud of the way you lived your life Mom, thru both the joys and the heartaches, and we will miss you forever but you left at peace, with yourself, and with God, and we will be forever grateful to you mom for all your love. The family would like to thank Dr. B. Randhawa for his patient, gentle, and loving care over the years, Susan Frizzo, Dr. Chafe, and the team at the Cottage Pavilion for doing their best to comfort and care for mom for the last 10 months of her life. There are angels among us and many watched over our mother. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2011 from 1:00pm to 1:55 pm at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00 pm. Interment at Aberdeen Cemetery in Abbotsford will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice would be appreciated. 127 VAN WERKHOVEN It is with great sorrow that we, the loving family of Theresa (Terri) Rita Bernice Anning (nee Caul), announce her passing on Sept 22nd, 2011 in Abbotsford, BC. Terri was born on April 15th, 1931 in Belleville, ON, and celebrated her very special 80th birthday this year with family and friends. In 1948, Mom married her devoted husband of 47 years, John Ernest Anning. John and Terri travelled extensively across Canada and abroad while raising their family of five. In 1972, John and Terri moved to the community of Mt. Lehman and quickly settled into their new life. Mom filled her life with pleasures great and small but always found the time to write the many birthday cards and for being there on those special occasions. Mom always enjoyed her reading and gardening and also became an avid world traveller and theatre goer in her later life; always willing to go on a new adventure. Mom was actively involved with the ANAVETS unit #315 Matsqui for over 35 years, and served as 1st Vice and President for a number of years. Mom’s constant and loyal companion of 16 years, her dog Carey, will miss her dearly. Mom was predeceased by 4 siblings, husband John (1995), 3 grandchildren: Matthew, Mary, and Tony. Annie Bilodeau Nov. 7, 2991 - May 19, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our loved one, Annie (Mummies Special Little Girl). As hard as its been since she passed away we know how lucky and fortunate we have been to have had Annie in our lives. It is ironic how we spent so much time teaching her so many tricks over the years when in reality we should not have been teaching her but learning from her. Annie was full of life, always happy, full of love, never judging, loyal, had no ulterior motives; what you saw was real and what you got. She did not have a mean bone in her whole body and loved all she met. Above all she was a true best friend who was always there for us. Annie loved nothing more than snuggling with any of our family. She also loved to hunt grasshoppers and eat mummies homemade treats. Sadly Annie was predeceased by her best friend and birth mother Susie whom she will now again get to snuggle and play with. She will truly be missed but never, ever forgotten by all who knew her. We would like to thank Dr. Hofs and his two assistants Deb and Tanis for the many years of excellent care and support they have always provided to our entire family. Love Heidi (Mummy), Mike (Daddy), Grandma’s Wilma, Gerda, Elena, Grandpa Ben and Uncle Chris. In lieu of flowers or donations we ask for what Annie would have wanted and that is for you to give all of your loved ones (pets or people) big hugs, kisses and of course lots of treats. Thank you Annie for everything you have done for all of us and for the important things you have taught us, we truly respect and appreciate you and will always remember you.
It’s canning time! Come see us at the farm.
