Students at Margaret Stenersen Elementary will be greeted by a new mural as classes resume. Jay Havens, a local First Nations artist, painted a scene showing the passing down of knowledge – a fisherman teaching his craft to two youngsters on the Fraser River. The lower portion of the painting is filled with salmon, and is bordered on both sides by blue herons. When it is finished, the sky will be filled with stars, each with four dots, representing the directions of the Sto:lo medicine wheel.

Derek Hoare at home with his two sons Wyatt (left) and Lyric. He is still trying to have the Ministry of Children and Family Development return his autistic daughter, Ayn.

An Abbotsford dad is still fighting to have his autistic daughter returned home, and anticipates it will be at least several more weeks before that happens. Derek Hoare appeared in family court last Thursday, when a presentation hearing was held in which the Ministry of Children and Family Development laid out its reasons for wanting to extend his daughter’s time in foster care. The hearing will continue on Sept. 26. Meanwhile, Hoare said he has been meeting weekly with ministry case workers, and hopes that mediation will result in the return of nineyear-old Ayn before the case proceeds through the lengthy court process. “I’m staring at least at another six weeks (through mediation), but it shouldn’t be another six minutes,” Hoare said. The girl was removed from Hoare’s care on June 16 – four days after she had wandered away from home, resulting in a police search. Ayn Continued on A6

10 schools in Abbotsford make the move to full-day kindergarten

The Abbotsford branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has presented a $7,500 cheque to the Abbotsford Hospice Society for its capital campaign. The society will build Holmberg House – a resource centre and adult hospice – on the Campus of Care site adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Also included on the site will be Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and Matthew’s House, a respite facility for children with severe disabilities. The two-storey adult hospice will consist of a homelike building which will offer medical care to accommodate the person who is ill, as well as family and friends. There will be 10 private patient suites, each opening onto a private balcony overlooking gardens and a patio.

When full-day kindergarten was implemented at Sandy Hill elementary in Abbotsford a year ago, longtime teacher Sylvia Tuytel was skeptical. Now, she is one of its biggest proponents, as the remainder of schools throughout the province – including 10 in Abbotsford – move from half-day to full-day classes. Tuytel and her colleague, Shelley Portas, who both teach French immersion kindergarten at the school, rave about the advantages of having their young charges in the classroom for a full day, five days a week. “We’ve been calling it the gift of time,” Tuytel said. Tuytel, a teacher for 28 years, said she was initially concerned that kindergarten would become “too much of an academic experience,” but the ministry of education curriculum has not changed. Instead, the students have more opportunities for learning and socialization built into fun playtime sessions, she said. She said she was also worried that a full day would be too overwhelming and exhausting for the young students. “My expectation was that children weren’t ready, but (in the end) I was still running to keep up with them ... They were ready and they were happy to be here. They were a very enthusiastic group of learners.” Tuytel said parents who had reservations about fullContinued on A7

Middle schools have students in Grades 6, 7 and 8. At a press conference in Delta on Friday morning, Premier Christy Clark announced $8 million in funding over two years for 44 new playgrounds and playground upgrades across the province. “Learning continues outside the classroom and play-

grounds are a venue where kids come together and learn from each other through play,” said Clark. The province also announced a commitment to ensure that all of the public elementary schools in the province, and every middle school that wants one, will have a playground for their students. There are currently 1,347 of these schools in B.C. “Well-planned school playgrounds provide unique learning environments for our children and are an important part of their school experience,” said Education Minister George Abbott in the press release. “They are an extension of the classroom and help promote fun and healthy activity for kids at school.”

SCHOOL DISTRICT ENERGY EVALUATION FortisBC and the Abbotsford school district have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to evaluate how the district’s energy needs can be better met. The two organizations will be looking at options to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This includes the use of thermal energy via equipment and facilities owned and operated by FortisBC. The MOU is for one year, during which time both parties agree to undertake engineering studies to determine which Abbotsford schools would make good candidates for the new energy systems.

turned up safely in a neighbour’s backyard. But Hoare said the basis for the ministry’s concerns is Ayn’s behaviour in school, where she, at times, has been violent and aggressive to teachers and herself. Hoare said the ministry has then used these examples to conclude that Ayn also behaves this way at home, and she must be medicated in order to control her behaviour. He is adamantly opposed to this step. “You don’t drug your kids to make life easier for you,” he said, adding that he also

does not want to expose Ayn to the possible side effects of medication recommended for her and currently being used while she is in foster care. He said he would rather home-school Ayn because he knows how to re-direct any issues she is having, and she does not exhibit the same behaviour at home. Hoare is concerned about the impact the separation is having on his daughter and his two other children – both boys, including a 10-year-old with autism – who remain in his care. He said a report detailing two visits that his ex-

wife, Amie, had with Ayn described the girl’s turmoil. “She’s disconnected and she’s just sort of walking around saying she wants to see me. She keeps going, ‘Daddy’s coming. Daddy’s coming.’ ” He has declined to visit her, fearing he will trigger deeper trauma when he has to leave. Hoare’s Facebook page, “Help Bring Little Autistic Girl Back to her Daddy,” continues to draw supporters from around the world and currently has more than 3,600 members. An online petition demanding her return home has close to 3,500 signatures.

children and families, she said. Operations in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge were ceased earlier this year, due to cuts in government gaming grants. Offices in Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack remain open. Executive director David Sheach said Wilson will be greatly missed, and was instrumental in helping BBBS achieve record-breaking revenues from events, managing the renovation

of the building in Abbotsford, and building programs across the Fraser Valley. “Shirley has guided the organization with gusto and care for people and detail,” he said. Wilson said she will remain active in Abbotsford, including seeking another term on the board of education during November’s municipal election. “I’m still very, very committed to supporting the work that the community does for children and families in Abbotsford.”

day sessions also grew to see the benefits. “The general consensus by the end of the year is that they (the kids) were very happy ... and they were not fatigued. She said the only thing she would change is to extend the “gradual entry period for kids at the start of the school year. Students begin with partial days and smaller groups, and must be integrated into full-day sessions by Wednesday, Sept. 14. Tuytel said she would prefer to see that period extended to the end of September. “The children need some extra time to build their confidence. But not everyone has supported the move to full-day kindergarten. Kids First Parents Association of Canada, which supports parental care over daycare, has said there is no benefit to the longer sessions compared to the half-day ones. Full-day kindergarten can be viewed as babysitting rather than education, the group stated in a submission to the Early Childhood Learning Agency, which conducted a feasibility study on the issue in 2008. In that submission, Kids First cited a study that showed kids do better on academic tests when they start kindergarten later than age five. “Finnish formal schooling begins at age seven, and Finland has the highest literacy

rankings, the Kids First report said. A total of 19 schools in Abbotsford offered full-day kindergarten in the 2010/11 school year. These sites were selected for the first phase because they could most easily accommodate the increased class time without having to add portables or undergo renovations. A total of 962 Abbotsford students were enrolled in full-day classes last year, while another 405 attended half-day sessions. The remaining 10 schools move to full-day kindergarten for the 2011/12 school year, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 6. School district spokesman Dave Stephen said the projected kindergarten enrolment is 1,360, although that number will become more exact when the official count is finalized at the end of September. Three of the remaining schools – King, Mountain and South Poplar – required the addition of portable classrooms at a cost of $212,00 each. Site preparation, renovations and materials at all the schools amounted to $620,000 in capital costs. This includes work such as re-plumbing, extra fire protection, painting and cleaning, and new shelves and storage units. The other seven schools moving to fulltime kindergarten are: Auguston, Bradner, Dr. T. A. Swift, McMillan, Mt. Lehman, ASIA/North Poplar and Prince Charles.

Probe reports differ over salmon farm risk Disease, not sea lice, main threat: Inquiry researcher

Jeff NAGEL Black Press

Two researchers hired by the Cohen Inquiry have come to differing conclusions on the likelihood com-

mercial salmon farms are seriously harming the Fraser River sockeye run. SFU biologist Dr. Larry Dill concluded the evidence suggests the growth in fish

farm production and the decline in sockeye stocks are linked, likely in concert with other marine factors. He found the spread of disease is the most likely factor – not

sea lice infestations, escaping farmed salmon or waste discharged from the farms, such as uneaten food or chemicals. The potential damage to juvenile sockeye from the large numbers of penned Atlantic salmon they pass in the Broughton Archipelago might seem like common sense, Dill testified

Monday before the commission into the decline of sockeye stocks, but stressed his findings are far from conclusive. “The evidence for that is there, but it’s fairly weak and uncertain,” he said. “Common sense is not always a good guide to science.” Dill said the aquaculture industry adds

new risks for migrating wild stocks. The farms make it much easier for different incoming or outgoing generations of sockeye to pass pathogens back and forth, he said. Dill also said the huge number of fish being farmed leads to bio-magnification, where large numbers of parasites can build

up, and more virulent strains of pathogens can evolve. Dr. Don Noakes, a Thompson Rivers University professor, penned a second paper commissioned by the inquiry, and concluded none of the risk factors associated with fish farms is likely to have damaged sockeye runs and found no link between them. He said he has concerns about the interpretation of data from studies examining the possible link between sea lice and salmon in the Discovery Islands, which he called unlikely. “There is no evidence that any exotic pathogens or diseases have been introduced by the salmon farming industry,” Noakes report states. In cross-examination before the commission Monday, Noakes was pressed to admit his findings were “speculative” and water them down. “It’s my assessment,” he maintained. “I haven’t heard anything to convince me otherwise.” The inquiry heard that three million Atlantic salmon die each year in the floating net pens between northern Vancouver Island and the mainland, and that up to 600,000 perish from disease. Previously, the inquiry heard geneticist Kristi Miller argue a newly detected virus could be a major factor behind the sockeye die-off, but she also Continued on A9

conceded the evidence so far does not suggest aquaculture is directly responsible. Dill, Noakes and two other researchers testifying Monday agreed that wild sockeye and the aquaculture industry should be able to safely co-exist, if the farms are managed properly and steps are taken to reduce any harmful interactions between them. Lawyers for the provincial government agreed Monday to release provincial audits of salmon farms, including data on dead and diseased fish. That was a reversal from last week, when the provincial representative at the inquiry argued the release would not be in the public interest and could have a chilling effect on voluntary disclosure of disease outbreaks – on livestock farms as well as fish farms. “I don’t think anybody bought that,” said Watershed Watch Salmon Society executive director Craig Orr, who said the provincial concession was a relief to many inquiry participants. “It’s really important to have the audited data to examine to see whether there are problems in the data submitted by the farmers.” Aquaculture remains the focus of the sockeye commission hearings until at least Sept. 8, before turning to issues such as water temperatures, cumulative impacts and the priorities of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The judicial inquiry led by retired Judge Bruce Cohen was called by the federal government after less than 1.5 million sockeye returned in 2009, far fewer than the more than 10 million expected.

Provocative tax proposal High home costs are increasingly pricing people out of the real estate market and raising questions about Metro Vancouver’s long-term affordability and sustainability. The market’s rise has been partly driven by an influx of foreign investment, including a steady parade of buyers from China. Meanwhile, the struggle continues to find new funding for TransLink for much-needed transit expansion without inflicting too much pain on already heavily taxed residents and motorists. Gas taxes, vehicle levies and tolls are all hugely unpopular. So here’s one provocative proposal that might help put a dent in both problems: Double TransLink’s current residential property tax rates. But at the same time, create a homeowner grant that rebates 50 per cent of the TransLink tax. Like the homeowner grant on municipal property tax, the TransLink version would exclude second vacation homes and disqualify owners who aren’t

Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. There’d be no change in the $230 a year in property tax the average resident homeowner now pays TransLink for a typical $650,000 house in Metro Vancouver. Most working folks would notice no difference. But the transportation authority would suck twice as much cash from foreign buyers, other non-resident owners and speculators. A $4-million luxury condo owned by a Shanghai business magnate or Alberta oil tycoon – who jets in once or twice a year – might bring $2,800 to TransLink each year instead of the current $1,400. And why shouldn’t they pay more? They come to enjoy Vancouver’s legendary livability yet make no permanent commitment to the region and use scarce housing inefficiently. And if a selective TransLink tax hike on non-residents or other owners of ritzy homes takes even a bit of the juice out of our overheated real estate market, so much the better. – Black Press

150 years of history awaits you Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand Sitting as usual at a sunny little table on the corner of my deck reading the morning newspaper and enjoying a cup of coffee, I heard voices from a couple on the street, hidden from my view by the trees. It was 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Being in my usual state of morning deshabille (bathrobe and nothing else), I was a little taken aback when one voice remarked “yes, he’s out there drinking coffee.” Then up to my gate rolls an attractive blonde on a bicycle, followed by a male similarly attired in bike racing gear. I walked to the edge of the elevated deck closest to the gate, ensuring the robe was tightly cinched, hoping that the angle was such that no more than my knobby knees were exposed, and engaged in a conversation that was obviously with wellacquainted friends, yet I had no clue who they were. First of all, at my age not too many

people that I thought I knew ride bikes, fewer still are in the physical shape these people were, and lastly they were wearing helmets and sunglasses. Despite that, we had a protracted “how are ya, good to see ya, how far you ridden” conversation, all leading I hoped to some sort of identifying information. To no avail. After a few minutes of chitchat, they declared they had to be on their way, and while bidding farewell, said “see you later this afternoon” and then it dawned on me who they were. We were attending a retirement party for a friend that day, and I had just been talking to his younger brother and wife. Disguise in the form of cycling gear, rather than a failing memory, was my downfall. Then yesterday, out of the blue I received an email from someone who at first glance also did not conjure any memories. She detailed our previous interaction, and thanked me for helping promote some years ago her start-up project – Abbotsford’s Circle Farm Tour – through Tourism Abbotsford. That drew another blank. But as I mulled over the message, the

memory banks churning away, I finally recalled who this person (now with a different surname) was. But recounting old times, and attempting to rekindle distant memories, was not the thrust of the email. What this person is doing, and was

Think about how many things in B.C. are a century and a half old, and yet Barkerville has a whole town full of them. soliciting my assistance to get the message out, is trying to generate interest in our province’s history, and promoting what has become the iconic example of the reasons for British Columbia’s birth. Her name was Donna Bernard, back when she worked for Tourism Abbotsford. Today she has a different name, but it is her nom de plume that really is the essence of what she is trying to accomplish.

Donna is the marketing manager for the historic recreation that is Barkerville, and she is touring the province – at least 10,000 km of it, in period costume, and as “Barkerville Bella” – promoting the Gold Rush town’s 150th anniversary next year. Think about how many things in B.C. are a century and a half old, and yet Barkerville has a whole town full of them. It is a place that, though I have visited only occasionally, is one of the most significant historic sites of British Columbia. The gold rush that created the town, with many original buildings, and many more that have been saved and moved to the site, is one of the reasons we became a province, became part of what was to become Canada, and saved ourselves from being another state of the American union. It may not be on your ‘bucket list’ but is most definitely worth visiting. Also try to take in the many other historic spots such as Yale in the Fraser Canyon that, in their day roughly 150 years ago, made B.C. the most populous place east of Chicago and north of San Francisco. You will come away with memories and images of people not soon forgotten. markrushton@abbynews.com

letters No increases for teachers I have read with interest Vikki Hopes’ article “Higher wages, better benefits” (News, Sept. 1) and your excellent editorial, “Living in the real world,” and I am wondering if your newspaper provides the Abbotsford District Teachers’ Association (ADTA) executive – and every teacher in Abbotsford School District for that matter – with a free copy of your outstanding community newspaper. I hope that Mr. Jeff Dunton will take the time to read your editorial at the ADTA meetings to be held on Sept. 6 and 7 (the first and second days of the new school year). And, it might be to his advantage to read the Ministry of Finance’s “Debt Summary – Budget and Fiscal Plan 2011/12 to 2013/14,” as well as Premier Clark’s latest comments on the philosophical/ideological direction that she wants to take the province during the next two years – creating jobs to address the 180,000 people in B.C. who are out of work. That will be a hard task for her in light of the slow-down in the Canadian economy, and the province’s current $47-billion debt that is projected to increase to $60 billion by 2013/14. On top of that, the province is expected to be borrowing $9 billion in the next fiscal year (2011/12), $6.6 billion for 2012/13 and $6 billion for 2013/14. And we have not even addressed the issue of the annual deficit that the province will bear in the year ahead, let alone the impact of

the changeover from HST to PST. From that information, it is quite easy to deduce that there will be no increases for public sector employees, despite the BCTF desire to seek parity with teachers across the country and have localized input into teacher working conditions. There will be no increase in bereavement leave nor will 26 weeks off at full pay be forthcoming for compassionate care

for any reason. And, please, could we use more succinct English to describe what the teachers will be doing. It is not “job action,” it is “role reduction,” and that will be noticed by students and within a short period of time by parents. But, by the November municipal elections, it will be noticed by the taxpaying electorate, who are astounded to find that a teacher with five years experi-

Check it out for yourselves, there is so much scientific and general information about incineration. Scientific studies support the opinion that modern mass burn incinerators are just as harmful to health as the older versions because of ultrafine particulate emissions. When visiting Clearbrook Library you are only 221 short steps through the trees to The Reach.

Benjamin Franklin once said “In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.” If the unthinkable happened and you died or became incompetent tomorrow, what would happen to your estate? Would your family fairly distribute your assets in a manner keeping with your wishes? This is often not the case; even the most reasonable of people can become unreasonable when money and property are involved. Families have been torn apart over seemingly minor items such as who gets a certain piece of jewelry. Preparing a will should not be something you will get to “someday.” If you have young children or any assets of value, you should have a legal will and you should regularly review it, especially if significant changes occur in your life, such as marriage or divorce. If you do not have a will, your estate will be distribut-

ed in accordance with current law, instead of your wishes. In your will, you must designate an executor who will be responsible for carrying out your wishes as indicated in the will. This should be someone who can handle the responsibility of dealing with your estate and your benefi-

ciaries. Your executor may also have to make some decisions about items not covered in your will, so you must make it clear to them what your wishes are. I know of one family where the running joke is “put a post it note on it.” Do you have young

children? If so, a trust can be set up for them whereby their inheritance is managed by a Trustee until they reach an age which you determine and set out in your will. Blended families should be considered when making your will. Litigation often occurs when someone re-marries and leaves their entire estate to their new family and nothing to children from a previous marriage. Your estate lawyer can help you identify all the factors you need to consider when planning your will so you are comfortable that the people you love will be provided for as you desire. Abby Collegiate’s Andreas Tan, Mouat’s Dairien Silva, Hansen’s Harjot Ghuman and Bateman’s Kent Hicks (from left) are among B.C.’s elite high school linemen.

Laying it on the line

In football, it’s all guts and very little glory for the guys who battle in the trenches. In our high school football preview, we shine a light on four of Abbotsford’s top linemen. FTER starting at centre for the Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers last season, Andreas Tan is shifting over to left tackle this fall – perhaps the most crucial spot on the offensive line, because he’s protecting the quarterback’s blind side. The Grade 12 athlete is making the transition look easy, and head coach Jay Fujimura believes the fact Tan also plays basketball has been crucial. “Basketball has really helped his footwork,” Fujimura explained. “He’s done a really good job. I think he’ll be one of the better linemen in the province.” Tan is part of a senior class that is particularly special to Fujimura, the Panthers’

NALYZING Dairien Silva’s heady play as the fulcrum of the W.J. Mouat Hawks’ offensive line, head coach Denis Kelly points to the senior starter’s volunteer coaching gig with the Abbotsford Falcons. Silva serves as an assistant coach with the local community football program’s junior bantam squad, and Kelly, the Hawks’ veteran bench boss, believes the experience has served to hasten Silva’s own onfield development. “It helps his overall approach in terms of what’s involved to become an excellent player,” Kelly asserted. “He approaches the game from a very technical standpoint.”

Clothes that work.

NE OF THE more interesting storylines to follow this season will be how the Rick Hansen Hurricanes fare with a Grade 10 quarterback, Alex Ho, leading the offence. Harjot Ghuman can relate to the pressure Ho is facing. The 6’3”, 260-pound right tackle was thrust into the starting lineup as a Grade 10, and he more than held his own against older opponents. “I understand what Alex is going through,” said Ghuman, who is heading into his Grade 11 year. “In the preseason, your first year of senior, everything seems to be moving way faster.” Ghuman got up to speed in a hurry last season, and based on his play, no one

O HEAR Robert Bateman Timberwolves head coach Rick MacDonald tell it, Kent Hicks is essentially a little man trapped in a big man’s body. It’s a compliment. Hicks has the size to line up at defensive end, but he’s also blessed with the type of athletic ability typically associated with smaller players. “He has the one thing no coach can teach him – he’s a big son of a gun,” MacDonald noted with a chuckle. “But he’s agile, coordinated, and has great hands and feet like a running back or quarterback. He really has skills that you don’t see in people who weigh 260 pounds.” Hicks, in fact, tips the scales at 280

fourth-year head coach. “This will be the first group I’ve seen all the way through high school (since Grade 9),” said Fujimura. “I think they’re going to have some pretty good success this year.” Abby Collegiate is seeking its first senior AA playoff berth since the football program was resurrected after a hiatus, and Tan believes the goal is within reach. “I think we’ve improved exponentially,” the 6’3”,

205-pound lineman said. “A lot of us have been here since Grade 9, and we think we can go really far.” Other key Panthers include Team B.C. receiver Dallas Yassinsky, Grade 11 quarterback Carter Williams, and linebackers Tanner Storoshenko and Jesse Neufeld. Abby Collegiate opens its non-conference schedule with a stiff test at Rotary Stadium on Sept. 16, as they host John Barsby Bulldogs, B.C.’s No. 1-ranked AA squad. Kickoff is at 12 p.m.

From A19

Silva took on the coaching role with the Falcons because his younger brother Lachlan is the team’s QB. He concurs with Kelly that it’s been beneficial to him. “I see the game from two different views,” the 6’2”, 245pound centre explained. “After coaching, I notice I can read the plays a lot better.” Silva is also a workout fiend – he’s been in the weight room at least once, often twice, per day since the 2010 season ended. That sweat investment yielded a spot on the provin-

cial under-18 squad, and Silva helped Team B.C. to a bronze medal at the Football Canada Cup in July. Silva was one of four Hawks on the B.C. squad, joining linebacker Jake Heathcote and defensive backs Nathan Henczel and Deion Bain. Those returnees, along with top running back Devin Logan and starting QB Daniel Markin, form the senior core of a Hawks squad that opens the season ranked No. 3 in AAA. The Hawks open on the road against the Mt. Douglas Rams of Victoria on Sept. 9.

pounds. The 6’3” Grade 11 athlete is expected to make a major impact with the T-Wolves this season, after representing Team B.C. at the Football Canada Cup in July. The Bateman coaching staff got a sneak preview of Hicks’s abilities last fall. Called up from the T-Wolves’ junior squad for a game with the seniors against Moscrop, he racked up three sacks.

would have guessed he was in Grade 10. Ghuman was one of the only Grade 11s invited to the B.C. U18 tryout, which is an impressive accomplishment even though he didn’t crack the roster. “We’re looking forward to him anchoring our o-line, which we think will be one of our strengths,” Hansen coach Paul Gill said. The Hurricanes missed the AA playoffs in 2010, but Ghuman believes his team his will catch people by surprise this season. “I think we’re underestimated, as far as the hype goes,” said Ghuman. “It kind of bothers me, but I know that the teams that are up there (in the rankings), they’re more relaxed. Teams like us . . . we’ve got to work harder.” Running back/linebacker Jordon Gmur and wideout/safety Harpreet Dhaliwal also figure to be impact players for the ’Canes, who open the exhibition schedule on Sept. 9 at Earl Marriott.

Running back Justin Douglas and receiver Jorden Best begin the season on an international tour with Canada’s U18 rugby sevens side, but they’ll be impact players when they return. Senior QB Ryan Kaethler runs the offence. Bateman opens at home against Moscrop on Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m.

B.C. dominant at rugby nats B.C.’s provincial teams brought home a bevy of hardware from the National Rugby Festival in Calgary last month, and Abbotsford athletes were front and centre. In all, 21 athletes from the Abbotsford Rugby Football Club made the cut to represent B.C., and all came home with a medal. The B.C. U18 men’s side won gold, edging Ontario 38-33 in a thrilling final. The eightman Abbotsford contingent included Tyson Adams, Paul Ahn, Tyler Barons, Jorden Best, Justin Douglas, Connor Hunter, Ryan March and Christian Styles. The local trio of Lauren Arthur, Madison Borrows and Sheldon Harder helped the B.C. U18 women’s squad to a silver medal. They fell 34-18 to Ontario in the gold medal game. B.C. sent two U16 men’s teams to nationals, and both climbed the podium. Nick Allen, Joel Campbell, Thomas Choi, Surge Francis, Spencer Miller, Louis Retief and Brandon Ho were part of a dominant B.C.-1 side which crushed Newfoundland 88-5 in the title game. Spencer Loughlin, Alex Ho and Kyle Van Ek helped the B.C.-2 squad beat Ontario 22-17 to clinch the bronze.

Super Modelquin to

foreign medicine Local woman reflects on whirlwind year of medical school in the Caribbean, after winning an Old Navy modelling contest

aking up in the middle of the night to the sound of a hurricane, with no power or electricity, took some getting used to for Maggi Gyuricska. So did the overwhelming heat, huge centipedes and wall-scaling crabs. But after a year at the Ross University School of Medicine, located on the island of the Dominicana in the Caribbean, the 26-year-old Abbotsford resident has adjusted. Gyuricska arrived on the island last August, after winning Old Navy’s SuperModelquin Super Search. The $100,000 prize afforded her the chance to attend the university and fulfil her dream of becoming a doctor. She had applied to numerous schools in Canada but wasn’t accepted due to limited spots, despite her high scores on her Medical College Admission Test and volunteer work at BC Children’s Hospital. While she was accepted to Ross University, the

tuition was $200,000 for the three-year accelerated medical program, plus one-year residency. Even though Gyuricska had worked two jobs since graduating from Yale Secondary in 2003, and had applied for numerous bursaries, the financial burden was still too much. In addition, getting a loan large enough was impossible because she was leaving the country, she didn’t have a co-signer, and her mother doesn’t own their home. So on a whim, she entered the Old Navy contest after her mom saw a commercial on TV. “Who can master the art of standing?” asked the Old Navy commercial. “Who will be the best at wearing clothes?” During the contest, she turned a picture of herself into a mannequin, added a punch line into a pre-made commercial and made a video highlighting Abbotsford.

“Please don’t cut my hair too short. Thank you... thank you very much.”

Keep your lawn at least 3 inches long to retain moisture.

She eventually became a finalist and was sent to Hollywood, with her mom, to shoot an Old Navy commercial. After finding out she won the contest, Gyuricska was ecstatic to be able to fill out the acceptance forms for Ross University. But before leaving, she had second thoughts. She was worried she wouldn’t live up to the expectations created by the contest, or the letters of encouragement she had received from strangers. “My mom kept telling me I could do it – that it was my destiny.” As soon as she sat down in her first lecture, she realized she was meant to be there. Since then, it’s been all work for Gyuricska, who has spent 12 to 14 hours a day at lectures and study groups, seven days a week. “You have to have discipline,” she said. “The teachers explained the workload like a stack of pancakes. If you don’t eat them up, then they’ll keep on stacking Continued on B8

up and then it’s too overwhelming.” On top of school work, Gyuricska visits the local market every Saturday with other students to perform physical exams on the island’s locals. practices. “Instead of asking a question like, ‘Do you eat fries daily?’ I have to ask, ‘Do you drink bush tea?’ I think it’s really helped me grow.” The difference in food, lifestyle and living conditions has been difficult to grasp. “It’s very different from travelling to the island and staying in a five-star hotel. We’re living amongst the poverty here,” said Gyuricska, emphasizing that she’s not complaining. “Even though it has been difficult to battle with those conditions on top of learning, this is the greatest experience.” When she does take the rare day off from studying, which typically happens following a large exam, Gyuricska gets to take in the island’s tropical activities. She’s snorkelled in a nearby reef, hiked through the jungle to remote waterfalls, and rented a catamaran boat only to be followed by a pod of dolphins and a sea turtle. “I look out of my window into the jungle wilderness, and sometimes it’s hard to believe I’m there,” she said. “It seems like yesterday I moved there, but it seems like a lifetime with how much I’ve learned.” Gyuricska recently flew home for two weeks to visit friends and family before returning to the island for four months. Around Christmas, she’ll be taking an exam she calls “the biggest test of her life,” which she has to pass before moving on to her clinical rotations in Miami. Her residency is next, at which point she will no longer be a student and will have her own patients. Somewhere in the process between now and her graduation in 2014, Gyuricska is hoping to transfer to a Canadian hospital. Her end goal is to return to B.C. and work locally. Until then, she’s known on campus as the girl from the Old Navy contest, filling her with gratitude for being where she is – amidst the hurricanes, bugs and all.
