Now 28, Heather is the mother of two children, aged eight and six; and the tumours have returned. Through 2009, she had seven brain surgeries. Merrett looks after her, and she needs the wheelchair. Replacing the stolen chair would cost Merrett an estimated $1,800, but thieves will likely get a small fraction of that. “It’s one of those extra twigs on the camel’s back,” said Merrett.

Local authorities have no immediate plans to follow Greater Victoria’s indoor tanning ban. The Capital Regional District passed a bylaw in January prohibiting salon use by teens under 18, following recommendations from medical health officers and anti-cancer groups. The bylaw requires final approval from the B.C. Ministry of Health, but if supported, violators could face fines of $250 to $2,000. “We’re not looking at it right now,” said Abbotsford bylaw manager Gordon Ferguson. “The city doesn’t typically regulate public health issues.” Officials from Fraser Health Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health are watching the situation in Victoria with interest, but neither organization has intentions of making regional recommendations at this time. Fraser Health spokesperson Roy ThorpeDorward said that decision could change if the new

Health Canada warns that tanning beds emit about five times as much UVA radiation as the sun. Exposure can cause skin cancer, eye damage, premature skin aging and
suppression of the immune system. Dr. Gillian Arsenault, regional medical health officer for Fraser Health, points out that any tanning is harmful because UV rays damage the DNA in cells. But vitamin D production is very efficient. If we start tanning, we’ve had too much.” Perfect Tan owner Lisa Byers believes industrywide regulations would be more beneficial than a complete ban on youth tanning. Enforcing a bylaw is difficult when tanning beds can be put in a variety of businesses like laundromats and gyms, she said. Byers would like to see a mandate ensuring that certified operators provide skin typing to all clients and control exposure times. The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) and Langley RCMP have partnered in a crime-fighting project that is believed to be the first of its kind among detachments across the Lower Mainland. Patrol divisions from the two sides have teamed up in pairs to target property crimes and offenders operating along the Abbotsford-Aldergrove border. Eight primary officers (four from each detachment) and another eight secondary members are involved, said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. He said Project Border Town was initiated to address an almost 100 per cent hike in property crime in the last year on both sides of the Station Road boundary. He said the area north of Fraser Highway has experienced mostly residential crimes, such as stolen vehicles and thefts from cars. The area south has recorded mainly commercial break-ins, including metal thefts.

Abby and Langley officers will share a vehicle. The Gloucester industrial area, north of Fraser Highway near Hwy. 1, is another area of concern. MacDonald said several individuals have been identified as people of interest, and key locations have been pinpointed for the fencing of stolen goods. He said much “information sharing” had already being going on between the APD and Langley RCMP, but the partner-
ship will be more efficient. Previously, one patrol car and one officer from each detachment were designated to each side of the boundary. If either officer needed assistance, they had to call for back-up from their own detachment. Now, they will share a vehicle and operate in both jurisdictions. “Those two will get the benefit of information sharing and the benefits of two people working together on a common problem,” he said. Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks described the initiative as an example of cooperative policing to combat “crime that knows no borders.” “We work together quite well and quite often,” she said of the relationship with the APD. Two Abbotsford schools are among the 20 most improved in the province over the last five years, according to the Fraser Institute’s elementary school “report card” released yesterday. Dasmesh Punjabi and Abbotsford Christian – both independent schools – each recorded jumps in their average rankings and in their overall ratings. The Fraser Institute school report card ranks schools in order of their results on the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA), given annually to Grade 4 and 7 students. This year, 875 schools participated. Each school also receives a rating out of 10. Dasmesh Punjabi was ranked 30th in B.C. – second in the district – while Abbotsford Christian School (ACS) was 172nd. This com-

Dasmesh improved its rating from a five-year average of 7 to 9.4 for 2009-10, while
ACS went from 7 to 7.4. The principals of both schools credit the dedication of parents, teachers and students in making the improvements.

Sulochana Chand of Dasmesh Punjabi said the school began using “intervention techniques” about four years ago to address literacy and language concerns in students. A total of 12.5 per cent of students at the school do not have English as their first language. Chand said the school has taken a “team approach” to addressing the issue. Teachers have taken training, and parents have supported their children’s learning at home, she said. “This has impacted positively on what we’re doing ... We’re taking it seriously.” ACS elementary principal Roy van Eerden said his school has also focused intently on student success, with “highcaliber” teachers who always strive for improvement. He said that although it’s great to be recognized, the school “doesn’t put a lot of weight” on the Fraser Institute numbers. A man in a dark-red station wagon is believed responsible for two armed robberies Saturday night in Chilliwack. And he may be the same man who robbed the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre on North Parallel Road in Abbotsford at about 11:20 p.m. on Sunday. RCMP received reports of armed robberies at the Parkwood Motor Lodge on Young Street just after 10 p.m. Saturday and about 50 minutes later at the Popkum Esso on Yale Road East. The suspect is described as black, about 25-35 years old, 5’10” to 6’ tall, with a short, black beard and a medium build. At the time of the robberies, he was wearing jeans, a light ball cap, and a dark zip-up hooded jacket that may have had “Vancouver 2010” on it. He was seen leaving in a dark-red station wagon. No call worth a life Drive down virtually any street and it becomes obvious how effective the ban on cell phone use while driving has been. This month marks the first anniversary of the law, which prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving. And yet, odds are you’ll see someone talking – or texting – while they’re behind the wheel. They are risking a lot. Not only do they face a $167 fine, they could incur three penalty points. Last year, police handed out nearly 32,000 tickets to distracted drivers. But the danger runs deeper than that. Police estimate distracted drivers are responsible for one-third of trafficrelated fatalities in the province. Last year there were 104 traffic deaths attributed to distracted drivers. The message is clear: pay attention or pay the price. Police say they’ll be stepping up enforcement of the new law this month. But it should not take the threat of
stronger enforcement to make us pay attention. Driving a motor vehicle is not a game. It requires attention and concentration. Things happen fast, and if drivers are not focused, tragedy can occur. And it’s not just cell phones that can be a problem. Pets, passengers, a cup of coffee, even a cigarette can all draw a driver’s eye off the road. It’s important that we not only pay attention while driving, but we set good examples for our children, who will one day be behind a wheel. Stay alert. Stay focused. And if the phone rings, or a text arrives, pull over to respond. If you’re an employer, initiate a company policy that makes driving safety a priority. That means employees out on the road know it’s OK to take a few moments before making contact. The bottom line is that there is simply no call or message worth a life. – Black Press

Other Hand As the world agonizes over climate change and the progenitors of environmental apocalypse berate us all for creating a world that cannot survive, somehow the disaster that is located just a few miles south of the B.C. border is overlooked, ignored or is out-of-sight, out-of-mind. That disaster, the remains of the nuclear age that made Hanford Atomic Works, or as it is now known – Hanford nuclear reservation – was the centre of the western world for development of atomic bombs. Those that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki were developed there, as were most of the warheads that currently lie dormant in silos across America, housed in stealth submarines and cruise missiles. The disaster of Hanford is not so much the danger and devastation that its products could, did and can create,
but the waste that was created as a byproduct of the nuclear age. As a result, in the starkly beautiful desert lands of southeastern Washington State, there is a volume of waste that boggles the mind, that is almost impossible to make safe, and is and has been for years working its way through the ground into the Columbia River. Eventually, unless it is somehow contained, it will also get into the atmosphere. Paramount among the concerns to render the stuff relatively harmless is that in the process there is the potential for explosions that could, in effect, mimic the results of a bomb with all the attendant radiation and nuclear fall-out. The problem with Hanford is that its cleanup is monstrously huge, and perhaps impossible to achieve. There are massive amounts of nuclear waste stored in leaking underground vaults, in ‘ponds’ and bunkers. In addition, no one is even aware of what some of the chemical mixes really contain, and therefore the challenge on how to remediate the ‘stew’ is largely unknown. The potential cost of the clean-up ... in excess of 15 billion dollars, according to some, more than 12 billion by the
optimists. And in a best-case scenario, it won’t be completed until 2047, more than a century after the first waste tanks were buried, tanks that weren’t estimated to last more than a few years. Back in the late ’60s and ’70s, I often travelled through southern Washington,
There are massive amounts of nuclear waste stored in leaking underground vaults. along the Columbia River and, passing the Hanford reservation, would shudder at the thought of what was going on there … at what must have been going through the minds of folks who worked there building weapons that were destined, in the name of ‘freedom,’ to potentially annihilate the world. Fortunately, common sense prevailed, and with nuclear de-escalation, Hanford was finally closed in 1987. Its latent abil-
ity to cause mass death and destruction remains, however, in its vast repository of waste. While the brains that created the stuff knew how to build bombs, few bothered to think of processes to remediate their by-products, and fewer still knew enough, or cared enough, to build storage facilities that would last a millennium. In fact, what is there probably has created a toxic mix that will never be rendered harmless. What may make matters worse, is that there may not be enough money available to do it, either. Regardless, the effort must be made, and hopefully the financial decisionmakers are not bent on taking the lowest bidder. In the meantime the potential for disaster festers on, threatening not just eastern Washington but, with prevailing winds, everywhere else within a thousand (thousands?) kilometres. I’m not sure there is much any of us can do about this, other than to be aware of it, and to recognize that carbon emissions and global warming might be the least of our worries in the future.

Taxpayers not getting value from council
So, council paid Tim Dillon & Associates $9,000 to provide justification for giving themselves yet another pay raise? A raise that is to include health benefits, a yearly allowance for attending community events and an annual conference allowance. With all the council promises and decisions that have turned in black holes, sucking millions of dollars out of the city budget, infrastructure (e.g. Matsqui Pool) that is falling apart, the city mired in a financial quagmire, the need for water rationing, how could anyone, even Abbotsford’s council, possibly think a raise
is either deserved or in order? What’s next? A golden retirement plan like the ones provincial and federal politicians have gifted themselves? If council has its way, raises will happen quietly, behind the closed doors of city hall, without any need to bother taxpayers with the knowledge that council has got yet another automatic yearly raise – unearned and undeserved. So much for Mayor George Peary’s “Getting good value for money [for taxpayers] is our number one priority.” I include council’s current salaries as

It is just that $9,000 seems a fairly cheap price, perhaps even a bargain, when you contrast the outcome, the proposed nine per cent pay raise, with the nearly 50 per cent (44 per cent) pay raise council arrived at and gave themselves on their own three years ago. If there was any relationship between ‘value for money’ and the wages paid
to Abbotsford’s current council, taxpayers would be getting an extremely large
refund of the wages city council has paid itself. Instead council is
going to give itself ongoing yearly salary increases, benefits and perks. Business

A new legal front has been opened by advocates battling for the right to drink and distribute raw milk. Farmer Alice Jongerden, the founder of Chilliwack-based Home On The Range cowsharing co-op, is mounting a constitutional challenge of a 2010 court order that bars her from producing or distributing unpasteurized milk, which B.C. law deems a public health hazard. “We want the freedom to make our own nutritional choice,” Jongerden said. “We just want to be able to have the right to consume fresh milk if we so desire.” Her court challenge argues the prohibition against unpasteurized milk is a violation of her right to liberty and security of the person under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and
that the stiff criminal penalties are unjust. Violators can be jailed for three years and fined up to $3 million. If she succeeds in overturning the section of the Public Health Act that bans distribution of unlicensed and unpasteurized milk, Jongerden said she intends to resume operation of the raw milk dairy, which she handed over to Ontario raw milk advocate Michael Schmidt last fall to avoid contempt-ofcourt sanctions. Schmidt has continued the operation under the name OurCows and claimed he is distributing the milk not for food, but as a line of cosmetics. Fraser Health planned to send inspectors to determine whether OurCows is merely a new attempt to sidestep the ban, as Jongerden had initially attempted by labeling raw milk ‘not for human consumption.’ However, Fraser Health spokesman Roy Thorpe said
the health authority will hold back on further enforcement action until the new court challenge is complete. Jongerden said she doesn’t aim to market raw milk directly to the public, but only to the cow share’s 450 Lower Mainland members. Since farmers can drink milk from their own cows, members argued they were merely collecting liquid dividends from the cows they own and that there was no public sale of milk. Victory in court might effectively legalize raw milk dairies. Jason Graatl, Jongerden’s lawyer, said the province should simply regulate unpasteurized dairies, apply a regime of inspections and require warning labels. B.C.’s insistence on pasteurization is less about safety, he said, and more about extending the product shelf life and protecting “industrial” milk producers from raw milk competition.

Justice Bruce Cohen will have an extra 14 months to get to the bottom of the mystery of the dwindling Fraser River sockeye salmon. His inquiry into the downturn has been granted an extension, with a final report now due by June 30, 2012 instead of this spring. Cohen cited the complexity of the commission’s work, the difficult and timeconsuming document disclosure process and large number of participants in obtaining more time. The commission’s budget is also increasing, from $14 million to an estimated $25 million. Hearings are now slated to run until at least September. The commissioner is to make recommendations on improving the future sustainability of the sockeye fishery, including potential changes in policies, practices and procedures of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). The delay has caused anger among First Nations that are close to treaties that can’t be concluded until the

federal government signs off on guaranteed shares of the salmon fishery. Treaty Commission. “Because of the delay, what we’re concerned about is the growing debt First Nations are facing,” she said,
referring to the loans aboriginal groups must incur to cover their negotiating costs. “We have First Nations negotiating tables that are fast approaching the tipping point where what they’re going to get in terms of a cash offer for self-government is going to be less than what they owe for going through these negotiations. So what’s the point?” Also critical of the delay is Conservative MP John Cummins (Richmond-Delta East),
who argues Cohen is devoting too much money to his own staff and scientific studies without probing DFO’s management of the fishery hard enough. “I see it as throwing good money after bad,” he said. Testimony this month is concentrating on harvest management issues. The judicial inquiry was called after the collapse of the 2009 sockeye run, when just over a million fish returned, about a tenth the expected number.

A big smile spreads across his face as he pedals down the street in front of his house. “It’s awesome,” he said, while ringing his bicycle bell. The bright red tricycle was custom-designed for the 11-year-old Abbotsford boy with cerebral palsy. It’s equipped with straps and pulleys that can be adjusted as Friesen grows. Handles attached to the bike seat also allow someone to push, pull or stop him from behind. “It just gives him

driveway,” said his mom Barb. “”Every child deserves to have their own bike. It really improves
the quality of life for these kids. It’s great for his legs, great for his core stability and just a great way to get some exercise.” The family applied to the Variety Club in 2009 for the $4,000 bike. It took about a year and half for the application to be approved. In the meantime, Jared was able to ride a similar model on loan from the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre. Cycling is now part of his weekly therapy sessions, which include horseback riding and physiotherapy. The Variety Club has also played a vital role in Sophie Farr’s life. The charity agreed to provide Calcilo as long as Sophie needs it. “It’s been a huge weight lifted off our shoulders and it’s been a real blessing,” said her mom Tanya. “It made us breathe easier knowing she was getting the proper diet she needed to develop.” With Williams Syndrome, Sophie also experiences hearing hypersensitivity, lack of depth perception, learning setbacks and muscle weakness. She had open-heart surgery when she was only eight months old, followed by eye surgery. However, none of this has kept her from being a happy, energetic toddler. “She has the syndrome, but it’s not what defines her,” said Tayna. “She’s just Sophie.” The Farrs have donated to the Variety Club Show of Hearts Telethon for several years, never thinking they would need the organization’s assistance. It’s always been a cause close to their hearts. “There are so many families out there that need help,” said Tanya. “Until you’ve been in a situation where you’ve had a child who has a medical condition and who needs that extra help or who is sick, you just never know.” The 45th annual telethon airs on Global TV Feb. 12 and 13. Last year, the event raised $7.4 million for children with special needs.

The flu is potentially a serious respiratory illness and comes on suddenly with fever and cough as well as general aches and fatigue.

Three games into Ales Kotalik’s tenure with the Abbotsford Heat, the AHL club is pleased with the early returns. “He’s brought us everything we hoped he would,” Heat assistant coach Troy Ward said. “He’s brought us offence, he’s brought us experience. “I like how he’s handled himself and how he’s carried himself.” Kotalik, a veteran of eight NHL seasons who is in the secKOTALIK ond year of a three-year, $9 million contract, was reassigned to Abbotsford by the NHL parent Calgary Flames on Jan. 28. The 32-year-old forward joined the Heat last week for a three-games-in-three-days gauntlet on the road, beginning with a 4-3 shootout win over the Chicago Wolves on Friday and continuing with a pair of 3-2 losses to the Rockford IceHogs and the Lake Erie Monsters. Kotalik made himself conspicuous offensively, posting three assists. He’s still looking for his first goal, but it’s not for lack of effort – he registered 17 shots over the three games, including 10 on Saturday against Rockford. Kotalik’s linemates for the

Manitoba and Calgary, the teams the Cascades are chasing, finish the schedule against higher-ranked foes. “Basically, it’s playoff time for us,” noted Craddock, who figures his team will need at least three wins in the final four games to sneak into the post-season. “We’ve definitely lost a few games throughout the year we think we could have won, but the door is still open for us. For the first time in school history, Columbia Bible College will play host to a Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) national championship tournament. CBC has been awarded the men’s volleyball nationals for 2012. The eight-team tourney will feature seven top college teams from across the country, plus the host Bearcats. The event will run March 8-10 at 1,000-seat Columbia Place.
“It’s a big deal for us,” CBC athletic director and men’s volleyball coach Rocky Olfert said. “This is the first time we’re going to be hosting an event of this magnitude. It’s maybe a bit overwhelming, but it’s very exciting at the same time. I think it’s time for us to step up and host something like this.” Hosting rights for CCAA national championships rotate from province to province on an annual basis, and the Bearcats were the only B.C. program

Pilots bounce back
The Abbotsford Pilots inched closer to clinching first place in the Harold Brittain Conference by splitting a pair of games on the weekend. The local junior B hockey club dropped a 4-3 decision to the Ridge Meadows Flames in a rare Friday road game, but rebounded for a 5-3 triumph over the Mission Icebreakers on Saturday at MSA Arena. The results left the Pilots seven points clear of the second-place Port Moody Black Panthers. Abbotsford has one game in hand with seven games remaining in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League regular season.

John Wyatt, OBE, DCM, and Esther (Logan) Wyatt, of Kingston, Ontario; her brothers, Douglas and John Wyatt, as well as her husband, Thomas North, and many dear friends. Sis is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Pat) Pelletier, of Abbotsford, Nancy North, of Toronto and Shirlie (Rod) Norwood, of Abbotsford. She leaves, also, her grandchildren, Jamey (Kelly) Pelletier and Jake (Heather) Pelletier, of Abbotsford, B.C and her great grandchildren, McKenna, Brady, Luc and Max; also her brother, Stuart Gerald Wyatt, of Edmonton, Alberta and many, many beloved friends. Sis was a veteran of the Canadian Women’s Army Corp (C.W.A.C.), a member of the Tri-Ex Service Women’s Club, a leader with the Girl Guides of Canada, and a long-standing and beloved member of the Widows Helping Others (W.H.O.) in Abbotsford, B.C. She was very interested in the affairs of World Vision and S.O.S. Children’s Villages. She was deeply devoted to St. Therese and the Society of The Little Flower. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM, on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Rd., in Abbotsford, B.C.
