Fire destroys machine shop Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A machine shop in Bradner was destroyed by fire Saturday night, causing about $800,000 in damage. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) responded to the blaze at 5887 Bradner Rd. at about 11:30 p.m. Deputy Chief Mike Helmer said crews arrived to find the shop fully engulfed in 100-foot flames. Crews worked quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby home, he said. Approximately 35 firefighters and eight rigs from five halls fought the blaze, which was contained after about 90 minutes. “Fire crews are to be credited for preventing further fire damage by protecting the adjacent homes and vehicles with strategically positioned hose lines,” Helmer said. He said several heavy-duty vehicles were destroyed, including dump trucks, forklifts, and small excavators. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is not considered suspicious, Helmer added.

19 river power projects on the way
Two alleged members of the UN Gang have been charged with the first-degree murder of an Abbotsford man who was gunned down outside a Langley IGA grocery store in February 2009. Warrants have been issued for the arrests of Conor D’Monte and Cory Vallee for the murder of Kevin Robert Leclair, 26, who died in hospital two days after the shooting. Leclair was believed to be a close associate to the Bacon brothers and the Red Scorpions. He had been living in a home in the 4300 block of Meighan Place in Abbotsford. D’Monte and Vallee have also been charged, along with several other UN Gang members, for conspiring to kill the Bacon brothers and their associates. Vallee and the six are also charged with the May 2008 murder of Burnaby’s Jonathan Barber. Visit abbynews. com for more details.

Paddler Ryan Bayes of Abbotsford says some of the waterways earmarked for run-of-river power projects locally and throughout B.C. have recreational value that will be lost through hydro developments. anymore. People would say, ‘No way, it’s way too beautiful.’” In total, BC Hydro has 114 electricity purchase agreements (EPAs) for IPP developments. As of Oct. 1, 2010, 65 of those were operational, including 50 hydro projects. The remainder are biogas, biomass, wind or gas-fired thermal stations. More river-based IPPs are on the way – 19 of the 27 EPAs that BC Hydro approved following its Clean Power Call request for proposals in 2008 were runof-river projects. Vancouver-based Cloudworks Energy Inc. has proposed developments on a series of waterways in the Harrison Lake
area – Big Silver, Tretheway and Shovel creeks, and the Northwest Stave River – that are currently going through the environmental assessment process. The company already operates six run-of-river projects in the Squamish-Lillooet and Harrison regions. Graham Horn, executive vice-president for Cloudworks, said his company seeks to work with kayakers by releasing periodic water flows for recreational use, and by offering online gauging of water levels. “We seek to build these renewable power projects with as little impact and as much
value as we can,” Horn said. “We do several years of baseline research before we go into a project. We understand what the fisheries are, what the invertebrates are in the creek, what the water temperature is, what the water flow or the geomorphology of the creek is. “Once the project’s operating, we track whether we’re affecting any of those things. It’s in our licence that we can’t be having any detrimental impact in those areas.” Bayes’s family owns Western Canoeing and Kayaking in Abbotsford, and he’s hearing feedback from European tourContinued on A7
Diverting water to make power A run-of-river Independent Power Producer is a small-scale hydroelectric development. A weir diverts water into a generating station, after falling through a screen that filters out fish and river debris. Only the water that’s needed goes through the screen and into the station. The rest of the creek volume carries on in the channel, as it would naturally. The captured water falls through a pipeline, called a penstock, which can be buried, or at other times it sits above the
ground, depending on the topography of each project. The water is sent to a powerhouse, where it flows through two turbines. The turbines create the energy, which is sent to a switchyard. Some of the energy powers the station itself, and the rest flows into BC Hydro’s main power supply. Once the water travels through the turbines, it flows out into the tailrace – a new waterway that rejoins the diverted water back to the natural stream. Run-of-river technology works best in waterfalls with a grade of at least 10 per cent.

SEX ASSAULT TRIAL A trial was scheduled to begin yesterday (Monday) for a man accused of youth sex assault. Shaun Michael Sloat, 32, is charged with two counts each of sexual interference of a person under 14, sexual assault, and administering a noxious substance. The offences allegedly occurred in November 2007. Sloat’s trial takes place in Chilliwack Supreme Court. He is not currently in custody.

For elite-level kayaker Ryan Bayes of Abbotsford, paddling B.C.’s myriad creeks and rivers is as close as he’ll get to heaven on Earth. “I love the exploration and adventure of not doing the same old thing every day,” said Bayes, 27. “Sometimes, I’ll hike two or three hours to get to a creek that has no road going to it. Sometimes it’s a total waste of time. “But sometimes I’ll end up in a canyon where no human being has probably been before.” These days, Bayes’s paddling pursuit has an added element of urgency. He’s concerned about the proliferation of runof-river Independent Power Producers (IPPs) – privately operated hydroelectric stations, generally on streams in heavily forested regions of the province. Most people will never see an IPP hydro station up close, but Bayes and other kayakers regularly paddle streams that have pending applications for water-diverting development. While run-of-river proponents say effective measures can be taken to mitigate impact on wildlife and recreation, Bayes feels the construction of such facilities ruins the wilderness experience. Bayes attends public forums on IPP development, and is sending a letter to the Navigable Waters Protection Program and Transport Canada. But perhaps the most practical element of his activist strategy is proving that some of the waterways earmarked for development are navigable and of recreational benefit. He attaches a camera to his helmet and posts video of his exploits to the fraservalleywhitewater. com website. “It’s hard for someone to defend something they’ve never seen,” Bayes said. “If (a TV network) flew up in a helicopter with a high-def camera, it wouldn’t be an issue

ists that B.C. is making the same mistakes that many European nations have made, in terms of overbuilding hydro development. B.C. is currently the world’s No. 1 kayaking destination, Bayes said, but he’s concerned that in a couple of years, that reputation could deteriorate. “In the world paddling community, B.C. has gotten a lot of bad publicity lately for the rate at which we’re doing the projects, he said. “The Ashlu Creek project (near Squamish) made it into European magazines, Australian magazines. That was one of those runs everyone wanted to do in their lifetime. Now, you have to arrange it with the dam to divert flow back into the creek if you want to
paddle it. Bayes said he’s not opposed to hydroelectric power in general, and pointed out he doesn’t fight every run-of-river proposal, though the privatization of waterways does concern him. The problem is, the two factors that make a stream appealing to paddlers – flow and gradient – are precisely what make them attractive to IPP developers. “There are a lot of projects that most people aren’t even aware of, he said. “They’re a lot more abundant than people think, and for the most part, companies do a good job of keeping them out of the public spotlight. Horn said his company chooses to voluntarily opt into the full assessment process through the Environmental
Assessment Office, which includes public consultation. Projects with a capacity of less than 50 megawatts are not required to go through the provincial EAO, and Cloudworks’ stations average around 25 MW. “We like the transparency of it, Horn said. “Kayakers are able to go onto a government website, and it’s a very rigid and transparent process where stakeholders can go and look at it. In our opinion, it makes for better projects. “We want to protect these habitats. We’re in this process voluntarily, to find out these kinds of things and have these conversations. And we plan to have more with the kayakers. At times, Bayes feels his struggle to preserve the natural flow
of wilderness streams is akin to David vs. Goliath. “The part that’s kind of frustrating, I’ve done meetings in Pemberton, driven out to Chilliwack a bunch of times, Bayes said. “That’s all voluntary – me and my friends volunteering our time, and it costs us time and money to do it. “Whereas with these projects, there are guys making big salaries whose jobs are to find ways to make it move forward. “It’s not a level playing field, and I recognize I don’t have the legal background to go about fighting this, aside from raising awareness with the public. For more information on waterway preservation, visit citizensforpublicpower.ca; wildernesscommittee.org; ippwatch. info; or bc-creeks.org

Thieves target churchgoers
Abbotsford gets the Good Life.
Three vehicles, one home broken into
Abbotsford News
Thieves have been targeting the vehicles of Abbotsford churchgoers to obtain their car registration and garage door openers. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said three vehicles at two churches had their windows smashed in and their tires slashed on Sunday morning between 8:30 and 11 a.m. The churches are located in the 3100 block of Gladwin Road and the 32000 block of Downes Road. In one case, the culprits used the registration to find the owner’s address and used the garage door opener to gain access to their home while they were attending church. Electronics and jewelry were stolen. MacDonald said a neighbour later reported seeing a suspicious vehicle in the area, but could only identify it as a black sedan. The neighbour also did not
have a detailed description of the suspects. MacDonald said the incidents are linked to one previously reported in the Abbotsford News. Chantel Funk said her parents, who did not want their names used, were robbed on Sunday, Jan. 2. They had been attending a morning service at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly. When the service was over, they discovered
the passenger window of their vehicle had been smashed. Stolen from the car were a Bluetooth wireless device, a TomTom GPS, a garage door opener and their insurance papers. The thieves broke into the couple’s home and stole electronics and jewelry. MacDonald said two people of interest have been identified, but more information is needed before arrests
can be made. He cautioned people to ensure they remove all valuables from their vehicles. “Most people think of a garage door opener as a convenience, but it’s a key (to their home),” he said. Vehicle registration papers can also be used in identity theft, he added. Anyone with information is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.

Abbotsford Hospice Society is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with the introduction of a new unique memorial gift. Lee’s Fine Jewellery has custom-designed solid sterling silver butterfly pendants replicating the charity’s logo. “It symbolizes love, relationships and new beginnings,” said executive director Debbie Lehmann. “It also represents history and continuity, and a way to connect to your loved ones or friends who have passed away.” The new pendant debuts at the Hospice Society’s annual Silver Ball fundraiser in February. The evening includes dinner, multicultural entertainment, and a live and silent auction. Performances will feature the Punjabi Cultural Bhangra Club of Abbotsford, and the Now or Never dance crew. A variety of items will be up for grabs in the live and silent auction including handcrafted jewellery, wine, a day spent with Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich and dinner at Restaurant 62 with Mark Evered, president of the University of the Fraser Valley. Silver Ball starts at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre. Tickets are $125. Proceeds will help the Hospice Society continue to provide free support services to terminally ill patients and their families. For tickets or more information, call 604-8522456.

Short on benefits
Should the City of Abbotsford leave the Fraser Valley Regional District? The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce thinks so. City staff concur. Yesterday, council debated the idea of quitting the FVRD. While at press time, the results of those discussions were not known, the debate is long overdue. The regional district concept was born in the 1960s, when the area was a much different place, and pooling resources among a group of small communities was a valid concept. However, at present, Abbotsford is responsible for almost 50 per cent of the FVRD’s total budget – just over $3 million – and it doesn’t receive anything close to half of the benefits. Local taxpayers are footing the bill for local needs, as well as helping to support five other communities and seven electoral areas. While the FVRD does provide the city some services – 911 is an example – Abbotsford already handles its own
planning, transit, water and sewer issues. If the city decides to go it alone – perhaps bringing Mission along with it – it presents an opportunity to make separate deals for 911 service and fire dispatch. Those arrangements would presumably come at a lower price tag than the regional membership fees currently paid. In an era when municipal taxpayers are calling for tighter fiscal responsibility, opting out of the FVRD is an attractive option. An estimated savings of $1.5 million a year is equivalent to a 1.5 per cent tax decrease. It must be recognized, though, that if Abbotsford does move on, taxpayers will not be entirely spared regional costs. The FVRD will continue, and it’s likely the provincial government will have to step in with funding for the remaining members. However, at least the bill will be shared by the entire province, rather than one city saddled with half.
Tests should be seen as helpful, not harmful Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand What, I wonder, is so wrong with testing school children on what they have learned? Is it because some teachers, and thus the entire BCTF union, believe that if a child fails, or does poorly, it reflects not on the student but the one who has provided the education that resulted in failure? Well, so it should, for the Foundation Skills Assessment tests are not difficult . . . I even took one and passed it, though I admit I didn’t get a perfect mark. In one of the reading examples I just sped through it, not bothering to properly digest the information. There is the ability, however, and it is also available to the kids when taking the test, to go back over the text to determine what the correct answer could be. I didn’t bother because, believing I should be smarter than a fourth grader, I didn’t think it fair to reread the piece from
which the questions were drawn. What I decided at the end of the test was that it was not difficult, and that it not only determined the ability to read but what information was retained from the reading. How can that be wrong? How can anyone, particularly a teacher, not want to know how much children absorb what they are taught? If a kid does well, a teacher should take comfort that a child is learning the skills the teacher was trained to pass on. If a child does poorly, then it should be an indication he or she needs more help – not that the teacher is doing a bad job. Unfortunately, there are, among so many good teachers, a few not so good. And that is what the union should be addressing, and for their own professionalism perhaps some should be weeded out, or at the very least, like a weak student, given additional help in passing on the skills they were trained to dispense. However, this isn’t about the good and the bad of the teaching profession, but in support of general education. When little Sam or Sally completes school, he or she, for their quality of life and their ability to gain employment,
must be able to read material, and comprehend what it means. If a child has not learned to comprehend and retain information, they are going to make poor rocket scientists, doctors or teachers. And anyone who says it isn’t fair to test
How can anyone, particularly a teacher, not want to know how much children absorb? kids, has never lived in the real world where there is a test – granted not often a written one – every day. To succeed in this world you are constantly being challenged, and if you don’t come up with the correct answers, response or action you will find your current and future worth diminished. It is in schools and in homes where those lessons need to be learned. And if, for a number of children, that doesn’t
occur in the home, then it falls to the skills and compassion of a teacher to provide the support. If a teacher, and the BCTF, believes it isn’t their role, then perhaps they should consider an alternative career. There are many wonderful teachers in our system – I’ve seen them at work with my children and grandchildren. They are the ones who create in children an appreciation for learning, an appreciation for life and a desire to keep on learning. And I would bet that those fine educators are not the ones disputing the need for Fundamental Skills Assessment tests. They are the ones who take pride seeing how well their charges do, and make certain that those who didn’t do so well will the next time. As for the tests being “too difficult” or “too challenging” why not take one? They are available on-line on the Ministry of Education’s website (go to www.awinfosys. com/eassessment/fsa_sample.htm) It’s not difficult to follow the directions, and the questions are multiple choice. If nothing else, you’ll be able to determine if you are smarter than a Grade 4 student. For rocket scientists, try the Grade 7 tests.

If there is to be applied, the same standard of security across Canada and to the high degree that Calgary applied; then why is it we are not hearing about the lax security standards that did not find Ms. Strecker’s gel-filled prosthesis on her trip from B.C. to Calgary? The two faces of government? Either way, there is a security issue, and no CSA Standards of applied security for the traveling public – just government BS if and when they maintain that both airports have the same security standards. Thanks for helping this lady.

Proud to say Abbotsford is home As I sit here cozy and warm relaxing by the fire, I can’t help but think back to where we were as a family just over a year ago. A journey too long to tell left us with only our bedding and clothing. My husband and I, with our four precious children, ranging in age from 14 to two, were starting at zero. We camped in a borrowed trailer at Bridal Falls, and drove into Abbotsford in a friend’s 1976 Mercedes. We chose to land in

Why different screening?
I am wondering about a factor that may have some meaning to Elizabeth Strecker’s story. We have all heard the horror story at the Calgary airport, but there is no mention of the apparent lack of security screening when she left B.C., I’m assuming by air. If Calgary’s screening is called standard, then by logic, B.C.’s is less than standard because of what that airport’s security did not find – her gel-filled prosthesis. If she did travel by air from B.C., and the same screening process is supposed to take place across Canada, then why was there this issue in Calgary if there was no issue in B.C.?

It was a grieving process dealing with decomposition and acknowledging death, she said. The 2,500-square-foot

2011 Honda Ridgeline offers unique pickup truck utility The five-passenger Honda Ridgeline half-ton pickup truck is built with a closed-box, unitized body structure for a unique combination of capability, interior spaciousness and comfortable ride performance. The Ridgeline delivers a wide range of conventional pickup capabilities with a maximum tow rating of 5,000 pounds and a half-ton payload rating, all while offering unique features like a large In-Bed Trunk® and an independent front and rear suspension. “The Honda Ridgeline focuses on delivering the most-popular features and capabilities that a majority of recreational truck buyers typically use and need,” said Erik Berkman, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “As a company that also builds world-class motorcycles, ATVs, marine engines and power equipment, many features in the Ridgeline represent the best thinking from Honda.” The four-door, five-passenger Ridgeline is powered by a 250-horsepower, 3.5-liter VTEC V-6 engine. A 5-speed electronicallycontrolled automatic transmission and a Variable Torque Management® 4-wheel drive system (VTM-4®) are standard. The EPA rates city/ highway/combined fuel economy1 at 15/20/17. A MacPherson strut front suspension in the front and a rear multi-link suspension design
contribute to a smooth ride and responsive handling. Standard equipment for towing includes an integrated tow hitch, transmission and oil coolers, heavy duty brakes, dual radiator fans and a wiring harness for a 7-pin trailer hook up (pre-wiring only on RT). A 5-foot-long composite cargo bed with eight tie-down locations provides a half-ton payload rating of 1,100 pounds. Four cargo area lights illuminate both the bed and the in-bed trunk. A dual-action tailgate opens down for traditional access to the cargo area or to the side for ease-of-access to the 8.5 cubic-foot In-Bed Trunk. The Ridgeline is available with a wide variety of accessories and can conveniently accommodate motorcycles and ATVs. The all-aluminum, 60-degree, SOHC 3.5-liter
VTEC engine produces 250-horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 247 lb-ft. of torque at 4,300 rpm. The Ridgeline’s variable valve timing enhances low rpm torque while extending high rpm horsepower for a broad, confidenceinspiring power band. The 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission features Grade Logic Control to help maintain the most appropriate gear when going uphill or downhill to avoid gear “hunting.” The fully automatic VTM4 system provides confident operation in rain, snow, ice, sand and mud, while also improving on-road and towing performance by distributing torque to all four wheels as needed. The system operates predominately in front-wheel-drive during drypavement cruising conditions and continuously proportions torque to the rear wheels during acceleration and low traction situations.

The unit-body architecture is designed for vastly superior rigidity compared to traditional body-on-frame designs and provides the foundation for the Ridgeline’s spacious interior cabin and bed, outstanding safety performance and class-leading ride and handling performance. The Ridgeline’s modern and athletic design incorporates a solid, one-piece appearance with no separation between the bed and the cab. Large truck-style side mirrors enhance rear vision while towing. The windshield wipers have a heated wiper zone to enhance wiper performance in cold, winter driving conditions and minimize ice scraping. The cargo area measures 49.5 inches wide between the wheel wells, 20.7 inches deep and 60.0 inches long (79.0 inches with the loadsupporting tailgate in the down position). The tailgate can easily close with contaminates like sand, snow or mud in the space between the bumper and the tailgate. The 60/40 lift-up rear seats feature a storage area underneath large enough to accommodate a golf bag. Plus, the rear seating area can quickly convert for cargo duty by lifting the seats up to create enough room for a full-size mountain bike with the front tire removed. The rear seat incorporates three LATCH positions for compatible child safety seats.

Heat split with Moose
Major makeover for soccer association
Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
The past week will go down as one of the most transformative periods in the history of soccer in Abbotsford. The Abbotsford Soccer Association finalized a partnership deal with Magnuson Ford which will see the club re-branded Magnuson Ford Mariners FC. The five-year pact figures to be a huge financial boon to the club. Then on Saturday, BC Soccer’s youth districts approved the formation of a new High Performance League (HPL), which will replace the metro league as the top tier of youth soccer in the province. The HPL will consist of eight Continued on A26

Manitoba Moose forward Shawn Weller – a member of the Heat last season – goes airborne in front of Heat goalie Leland Irving during Sunday’s game in Winnipeg.
In hockey, sometimes the difference between winning and losing comes down to a wacky bounce or two. The Abbotsford Heat saw their two-game weekend set against the Manitoba Moose pivot on two such plays. On Friday evening in Winnipeg, the Heat were the recipients of some good fortune. Late in the first period, with Manitoba leading 1-0, Moose goalie Eddie Lack mishandled Cam Cunning’s shoot-in, accidentally backhanding the puck into his own net. That goal was the first of two on the night for Cunning, and the Heat ended up winning 3-2 in a shootout. In Sunday’s rematch, the Moose got a fluke goal of their
own. With his team nursing a 3-2 lead in the third period, Manitoba forward Guillaume Desbiens threw a backhand pass in front of the Heat net that took a pair of 90-degree deflections off Joe Piskula and Gaelan Patterson and slipped between the legs of stunned goalie Leland Irving. That tally would prove crucial, as Cunning scored shortly thereafter to draw the Heat to within a goal. But Desbiens tacked on an empty-netter to clinch a 5-3 victory for the Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate. “It happened to both teams, and that’s just the way it goes sometimes,” Cunning noted. Cunning’s production was an encouraging sign for the Heat. The burly veteran forward was

Third medal of season
Abbotsford’s Amy Gough captured her third World Cup skeleton medal of the season on Saturday, winning bronze in Winterberg, Germany. Gough, who also won bronze in Calgary and Park City, Utah earlier this year, had two consistent runs to clock a combined time of one minute, 58.52 seconds on the 1,330-metre track. “Just like my other two podiums, I had two really solid runs and that is what I’m looking for, said Gough, 33, who finished 20th last season in Winterberg. “This is not my favourite track. It is so weather dependent and can change so quick which makes it inconsistent for each athlete. But I didn’t come in here defeated and I’m happy with the result. Gough was joined on the podium by Shelley Rudman of Great Britain, who posted a golden time of 1:57.77. Germany’s Anja Huber claimed
the silver at 1:57.99. “I feel like I’m in a different mental head space with a lot less pressure this year, said Gough, a 2010 Olympian. “I learned a lot last year and I think as you get older I’m able to deal with things a lot better and feel more comfortable now.

Pilots forward Adam Rossi gets physical with a Port Moody opponent on Friday at MSA Arena.
A huge game from Kevin Lourens on Friday night sparked the Abbotsford Pilots to a perfect weekend. Lourens scored a hat trick in regulation time and added a goal in the shootout as the Pilots edged the Port Moody Black Panthers 4-3 at MSA Arena. It was an important game for the local junior B club, as the Panthers came in nipping at their heels for first place in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s Harold Brittain Conference. Lourens continued his hot play on Saturday, scoring two more goals as the Pilots beat the North Delta Devils 4-2 at Sungod Arena. Riley Lamb, the PIJHL’s fourthleading scorer, added two goals and an assist for Abbotsford, while goalie Cole Chreptyk turned aside 23 of 25 shots. The Pilots (21-115) are back in action on Friday, when they host the Aldergrove Kodiaks (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).

Soccer Club since 1984, and the arrangement has been instrumental in establishing that club among B.C.’s elite. “I meet people in the Coquitlam area who played Metro-Ford soccer in the ’80s, and now their kids are playing, said Layne Magnuson Jr., who owns the Abbotsford dealership. “It’s become a generational thing. “It’s nice to be aligned with a winning club in Abbotsford. Magnuson Ford will donate a vehicle to the soccer club each year for a raffle, which Nicholl hopes will raise as much as $100,000 annually. Other fundraising initiatives will also be put in place. Abbotsford’s soccer teams will continue to wear their
regional franchises which will field boys and girls teams from U13 to U18. Brad Nicholl, president of the local association, confirmed that Abbotsford plans to apply for a franchise. “I’ve never seen anything like this, Nicholl enthused. “If we get into the HPL, and with 2011 being the Vancouver Whitecaps’ launch in Major League Soccer, it’s just a big soccer wave in B.C. Everything’s lined up perfectly. A major reason for Nicholl’s optimism is the new partnership with Magnuson Ford. The Abbotsford dealership’s sister store in Port Coquitlam has been the title sponsor of the Coquitlam Metro-Ford
signature black-and-white striped jerseys, and a new logo is being designed. The club will also switch from Umbro to Adidas apparel. Nicholl said the additional funds will help the club hold the line on registration fees in the face of rising field rental costs, and establish new after-school programs. “We haven’t raised our registration costs in four years, and we’re not raising it this year, he said. As for the HPL, Nicholl is bullish on Abbotsford’s chances of landing a franchise. To this point, 11 groups have expressed interest, and the franchises will be selected by the end of February. Abbotsford will run one
final season of USL Super Y-League youth soccer this summer, and the HPL will play an exhibition schedule this fall. The new league will be on-stream in 2012, with a March-to-November season. A major change with the HPL is, athletes will have the ability to cross association boundaries freely. “The eight teams are going to have the best players in the province, and they’re going to train with the proper coaching within Canada’s long-term player development strategy, Nicholl pointed out. Q The soccer club begins spring registration today, and the Magnuson Ford Mariners FC launch party is set for April 9.

OBITUARIES
BLADES, William(Bill) Norman October 15, 1931 ~January 14, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Blades at his home in Oak Bay Lodge in Victoria, BC. Bill was in good spirits and happy up to his sudden departure. He is predeceased by his father Norman Blades and his mother Florence Blades(nee Muirhead). Bill was the grandson of Christopher and Jane Blades who immigrated from England from Round Hill, Alberta. Bill grew up in the farming community of Camrose and joined the Canadian Navy wile still in his teens. He described his days serving the RCN as the happiest of his life. During his 23 years of service he rose to the rank of Warrant OfďŹ cer. Her served on the HMCS Sioux on a mission to police the post war truce in Korea and was twice decorated in 2005 as a participant in what became the foundation for Canada’s military peacekeepers. Bill left the Navy and worked as a Living Unit OfďŹ cer for Corrections Canada, serving 10 years at the Matsqui Medium Security Facility in Abbotsford. After retirement from service with the Government he moved to a home on Mt Lehman Road, Abbotsford, where he enjoyed nature, his many dogs, various cats and chickens. In retirement he was an exemplary volunteer, winning an Award of Meritus Service from the Abbotsford Kiwanis Club, CertiďŹ cate of Outstanding Service from the Big Brothers of Central Fraser Valley and one of the highest awards in scouting, the Medal of Merit, for his service in creating in 1983 Canada’s ďŹ rst Venture Scout troop for handicapped boys and girls, the 4th Abbotsford Special Ventures (now Adventurers). In the mid 1990’s , Bill’s ill health required a move to a care facility and ďŹ nally to Oak Bay Lodge in Victoria in 2002. There he enjoyed teasing care workers and regular visits from his family. We are especially grateful for the loving care given to Bill by the staff of Oak Bay Lodge these past 8 years. Bill is survived by his brother John (Steph) Blades, his children David(Edith), Barbara(Gordon), and Jim (Darcy) Blades, his step children Kim, Kevin(Joanne), and Kraig(Sandra); nieces Kristin and Michel and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will miss his smile, good humour, playful approach to life and love of the outdoors. According to his wishes, Bill will be interned in a private ceremony. In lieu of owers of condolences, donations in remembrance may be made to the Abbotsford Special Adventurers, care of the Abbotsford Kiwanis Club.
