Canadians love a good story, they admire a gritty blue-collar attitude, and they respect a bona fide mane of hockey hair. Can it be any wonder, then, that a nation of golf fans fell in love with Adam Hadwin last week? Hadwin didn’t win the RBC Canadian Open, held at Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, but he won the crowd. The 23-year-old from Abbotsford was in contention all weekend en route to finishing in a fourth-place tie, two strokes behind American Sean O’Hair, who won in a playoff over Kris Blanks. It was a milestone finish for Hadwin, with many tangible benefits. His share of the $5.2 million purse was $228,800 – more than five times his previous career-high payday. He won the Rivermead Cup, emblematic of the top Canadian golfer in the Canadian Open field, for the second straight year (he tied for 37th in 2010). Hadwin also earned an exemption into the next PGA Tour event, the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia, by Continued on A7

The latest national stats show that AbbotsfordMission is the ninth highest in overall crime among the 32 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) included by Statistics Canada for 2010, but the figures are somewhat misleading, says a local police spokesman. Const. Ian MacDonald said although AbbotsfordMission is high on the list – at an index of 99.8 compared to the national average of 82.7 – it’s doing better than the provincial average (102) and its neighbouring com-

Chiliwack’s crime severity index sits at 120, Langley Township is 108, Maple Ridge is 103, and Langley City is 175. The index is a formula based on the number of

crimes in a CMA and the severity of each offence. MacDonald said what’s more important to note is that overall crime is down 12.3 per cent in Abbotsford (10 per cent when Mission is included) from 2009 to

2010, and violent crime has dropped 26 per cent (24 per cent with Mission). He said the Abbotsford Police Department is proud of those figures and has worked hard to identify and tackle areas of concern. Among the most significant drops in violent crime is the homicide rate. Abbotsford snared the title of “Murder capital of Canada” in the previous two years for its six homicides in 2008 and 11 in 2009. Although specific murder rates for each CMA were not released in the latest Stats Canada national crime report, MacDonald said it’s fair to say that Abbotsford will not top the list for 2010 or this year. The city recorded four murders last year and has none so far in 2011. MacDonald said Abbotsford’s drop in violent Continued on A6

Mom, children escape fire A mom and her three young daughters escaped from a house fire Thursday afternoon in Abbotsford, but lost most of their possessions. The mom fled from the home with her sixmonth- and five-year-old children, and then suffered minor facial burns while assisting her two-year-old. The blaze was reported at about 12:20 p.m. at 32046 Pineview Ave. by a neighbour. When Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) crews arrived on scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to control the fire after about 10 minutes and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said the home sustained major smoke, fire and water damage estimated at $150,000. The cause is believed to be a cigarette left burning in a bedroom. He said the blaze spread quickly because of a “rich supply of oxygen” that entered the home as a result of the back patio doors and windows being left open, as well as the front door when the family escaped. Helmer said the owner of the home was insured, but the occupants were not. AFRS’ emergency social services (ESS) was on scene and provided immediate assistance to the family. ESS provides temporary help with things such as food, accommodation, clothing and emotional support. This is the third major house fire in Abbotsford this month. None is believed to be suspicious. On July 5, blazes destroyed three-storey homes at 36527 Dina Place and 2284 Orchard Drive.

Star athlete killed

Hit-and-run accident takes life of Desmond Bassi Abbotsford News

The driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed star athlete Desmond Bassi, 17, early Saturday morning turned himself in to Abbotsford Police Department later that afternoon. The driver is also 17, and now faces criminal charges. His name cannot be released because he is a youth. Less than an hour before the teen turned himself in, another 17-year-old showed up at the police department and said he had been a passenger in the suspect vehicle, which has now been located and seized. Const. Ian MacDonald said Bassi, who was identified as the victim by the Abbotsford News early Saturday afternoon, left a party that had taken place on a side street off Clearbrook Road with a small group of friends. The group walked along Clearbrook Road and then west on Blueridge Drive towards Mt. Lehman Road. At some point, Bassi got far enough ahead of the group that they did not witness the collision. Two drivers travelling east on Blueridge, just west of Townline Road, found Bassi lying in the road, pulled over and called 911 just before 1:30 a.m. When police arrived, they found the teen severely injured. Two officers took turns performing CPR, but the boy died in hospital about an hour later. Bassi was a star receiver for the W.J. Mouat Secondary football team, earning All-Province honours last season. He was also a key member of the Hawks basketball team that won the Fraser Valley title and finished fourth in B.C. Bassi was set to attend Simon Fraser University this fall on a football scholarship, and Mouat head coach Denis Kelly said he had put in a tremendous

DESMOND BASSI amount of work getting his grades up during his Grade 12 year in order to qualify academically. “There were nothing but positive things happening for him, and then this,” Kelly said. “He was a kid with all kinds of athletic talent, and really highly regarded by the teachers. “What a promising future he had. You’ve just got to feel sick for the family and for the grad class.” Gurminder Kang, one of Bassi’s closest friends and a Mouat basketball teammate, was part of the group that was walking westward on Blueridge Drive. He did not see the incident, as

Bassi was separated from the rest of the group by about 100 yards. “We live on the same street, so we were just walking to our houses,” he said. “Why him? It shouldn’t ever have happened to this guy. He’s the greatest guy in the world.” Via Facebook, several of Bassi’s classmates organized a candlelight vigil at Mouat Secondary on Sunday evening. Luke Friesen, a teammate of Bassi’s in both football and basketball, remembered his friend as someone with a great sense of humour. “Desmond was the kind of guy who could really make you laugh in any sort of situation,” Friesen said. “He’d walk into a room, and everyone would smile. He was just that type of guy. “He had a great work ethic – he had to try so hard to pass his classes to get to SFU, where he really wanted to go to play football.” On Sunday, the APD turned over the investigation to the Lower Mainland District Regional Police Service and the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Section, after it was determined that one of the persons involved in the incident is an extended family member of an APD officer. RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen declined to identify whether it was the victim, a suspect or a witness that the APD officer was related to. “The primary focus of the investigation right now is, we’re trying to determine the movements of the victim,” Thiessen said. “There’s a lot of work to be done yet trying to determine what led up to this incident.” Bassi was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans with a white belt and white sneakers. Anyone with information on his movements on Saturday morning is asked to contact Surrey RCMP.

Province approves incinerators The province has endorsed the regional waste plan, which includes the incineration of garbage. The region adopted the Integrated Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan (ISWRMP) a year ago this week. It also calls for an aggressive push for increased recycling and composting of household organics. Metro board chair Lois Jackson said Tuesday the provincial approval was great news. “This solid waste management plan will help us preserve non-renewable resources, save energy, generate revenue, protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gases,” Jackson said. The plan was the result of an exhaustive public consultation and involves several methods of waste disposal as the region attempts to cut down the amount of garbage headed for the landfill. The targets are an 80 per cent diversion in the amount of waste heading for landfills, which are quickly

hitting their maximum allowable intake. At the time the plan was passed by the regional board last year, Jackson said the plan was “collaboration of many many years work. Not only people from around this table, but also from the past, are going to be interested in how we deal with this today.” Mayor Dianne Watts said at the time there’s a huge host of emerging technologies available that out-of-region communities might want to host. She also noted the Fraser Valley is vehemently opposed to such a facility. “We have to respect their views as well,” Watts said, adding she would approve of an out-of-region facility. “I think it’s the most balanced approach.” Because of strong public reaction to decrease the amount of garbage going to landfills, Metro staff are recommending an 80 per cent diversion by 2020.

‘We have made it a very inhospitable place for gangsters’ From A4

crime can be attributed to three key areas. One is an acknowledgement by the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) and the community that there was a problem with gang warfare and drugs. MacDonald said the second key was that something was done to address the issues. The APD launched a series of prevention campaigns – including presentations, posters and videos – aimed at steering kids away from the gang lifestyle and educating their parents about the issues. But MacDonald said it took citizens’ embracing and supporting these initiatives for them to be successful. He said the third factor in reducing violent crime was police enforcement, including the formation of a gangster list identifying criminals who “ply their trade” in Abbotsford. Police have kept a close watch on these individuals, and made arrests where possible. “We have made it a very inhospitable place for gangsters,” MacDonald said. He said the APD is optimistic about the coming year and what the Stats Can figures will show in 2012. “I think we are on our way to what our intention and our mission are – to make Abbotsford the safest city in B.C.” The Stats Canada report was released Thursday, showing that the national crime rate is at its lowest level since 1973. A total of 2.1 million Criminal Code incidents were reported across the country, about 77,000 fewer than in 2009. For more information, visit statcan.gc.ca.

Huge ovations for Hadwin From A1

virtue of his top-10 finish. But it felt like something even more special was happening – the launch of a charismatic new Canadian golf star. Everywhere at Shaughnessy on Sunday, folks were bruising their palms in support of Hadwin. He got a huge ovation every time he made his walk up to the green. He got a huge ovation when he knocked his tee shot to within two feet on the par-three 12th hole. He even got an ovation after emerging from a port-o-potty on the 13th. Then there was the applause coming up the 18th – an extended standing ovation from the fans in the bleachers that Hadwin said “sends chills down your spine.” “It’s a pretty neat feeling,” he said afterward. “It was really nice playing in front of a country today.” Hadwin, a HADWIN second-year Canadian Tour pro playing just his third career PGA Tour event thanks to a sponsor’s exemption, found himself on the brink of history heading into Sunday’s final round, sitting one stroke back of leader Bo Van Pelt at four under par. No Canadian had won the national open championship since 1954, when Pat Fletcher did it. The front nine was a ragged stretch for Hadwin, though. He bogeyed the first and sixth holes, then four-putted on the eighth green for a gutwrenching double-bogey. When his tee shot on 11 sliced way to the right, landing in the rough just off the adjacent 13th fairway, it looked like Hadwin’s dreams of winning were toast. But he chipped onto the 13th fairway, hit a ridiculous approach shot between

the trees that landed back on the 11th green, then two-putted to limit the damage to a bogey. That recovery seemed to ignite Hadwin’s game. His tee shot on 12 stopped just shy of the hole, and he tapped in for his first birdie of the day. He followed that with birdies on the next two holes, capping the stretch by draining a 30-foot putt on the 14th that drew an explosive roar from the gallery. The birdie binge got Hadwin back to within a stroke of the leaders at -2 for the tournament, but he would get no closer, parring the last four holes. Afterward, Hadwin was quick to note his day could have been even more memorable if he hadn’t stickhandled around the hole on the eighth green. But he said he was “extremely proud” of the way he rallied. “I kept telling myself that whole time that I wasn’t as bad as I was showing,” he said. “There were only a few times out there where I felt nervous, and to be honest, there weren’t many of them. When I did feel nervous, I just talked myself into hitting a good shot.” Making the day even more special for Hadwin was the fact his younger brother Kyle was able to walk the course. Kyle, 20, has been battling Crohn’s disease, and he’s undergone five surgeries since last August. He was at Shaughnessy on Friday and Sunday, marking the first time he’s been able to watch Adam in person since last year’s Canadian Open. “I had to take yesterday off,” Kyle Hadwin said. “There was no way I would have made it three days in a row. But I needed to be here today. I needed to see this. “It was amazing. The front nine he struggled a little bit, but we all had faith and we knew he was going to have a good back nine. He made those three birdies in a row, and it was unbelievable watching coming in. The last thing I needed was a high heart rate, but he left one for me.”

Comment on any story online at abbynews.com or email newsroom@abbynews.com Published and printed by Black Press Limited 34375 Gladys Avenue, Abbotsford.

Fighting crime Abbotsford is in the public spotlight for the right reasons. After a decade that saw gang violence, frequent shootings, targeted killings and this city labelled with the dubious moniker “murder capital of Canada” in the national press, the city had a reputation in need of repair. And it is being overhauled. Abbotsord is now statistically doing better than neighbouring municipalities, with fewer crimes, and less severe crimes, according to the Statistics Canada numbers released last week. Overall crime is down 12.3 per cent in Abbotsford, and violent crime is down 26 per cent. Those are impressive reductions, and the numbers confirm a noticeable change in the community. Cheif Bob Rich and the Abbotsford Police Department have

shown dedication and resourcefulness in tackling crime in this community. They launched a crime prevention and awareness campaign focused on making young people and parents aware of the dangers and myths associated with a criminal lifestyle. Identifying local gang members, and making their lives in Abbotsford difficult, was another important part of the campaign against crime. Joining with Abbotsford’s licensed establishments, they have made this community an inhospitable one for the criminal element. And most importantly, they have brought charges against many of the key players on the Abbotsford crime scene. There is still a lot of work to be done before Abbotsford could boast of being the safest city in B.C. – the department’s goal. But they have made a great start.

We must maintain our independence Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand Now that summer is over, I guess it’s time to begin plans for fall. Because other than Sunday when it hit 29 C in the shade, and in fact made it too hot to anything other than laze around in the shade, the long-term weather trend indicates relative coolness. While the charts suggest it will be mostly sunny, the temps don’t show much above the low 20s. And to be honest, I’m happy with that. Really hot days like we had this weekend are too much to do anything constructive outside, and who wants to be inside on a sunny day. Which means of course that before the leaves begin to turn I’ll have to paint the barn, re-stain the deck and

split and stack the piled-up winter firewood. Tackling those tasks, fortunately, frees the mind to wander and explore such topics as the competence of those who, at every level, try to run our world. The more I ponder, the more I wonder where that world will be, and what it will look like. I’m not even thinking long term. If the forecasters of economic doom are correct about the American’s possible inability to get their debt under control, we could be facing economic chaos in a matter of weeks. That will reverberate across the globe, aided by the potential collapse of Greece. Which means that the already stratospheric price of gold will continue to climb as wealthy hoarders convert their cash and hope for the best. In the meantime, you and I will struggle through, buoyed by the belief that nothing lasts forever and if we live long enough we can weather the storm. And if we don’t, well that’s a worry for

another day. I have to wonder though, when costs will cease to increase on the Lower Mainland. Every time I hear the words TransLink and Metro, they seem always to be accompanied by a rise in taxes. While neither of those entities are

The more I ponder, the more I wonder where the world will be, and what it will look like. directly related to Abbotsford, their decisions impact us almost as much as if we lived within the taxing confines of Metro. Other than locally grown products, virtually all goods we consume will have a cost factored in for road tolls and gas taxes. Certainly I believe in rapid transit, and think it works. But

rapid transit cannot transport goods and services, and it costs a fortune to construct. Then again, roads and bridges aren’t cheap to build either, so user-pay is not a philosophy lost on me. But there has to be a better way than adding tax on tax until we, like the U.S., face a cash crisis. So build the Evergreen line, but go for at-grade rail instead of Skytrain. Get the municipal portion of funding from it by trimming existing costs rather than adding to them. There has been a reliable opinion that a mere one per cent cut in the cost of municipal government throughout Metro would fund the proposal transit line. Then, when it is built, ensure that rider fees are sufficient to maintain it. And let every voter within the City of Abbotsford ensure that if there is ever a flirtation of council to join Metro Vancouver, we quash it immediately. We may not live in a ‘toll-free’ zone, but we are better off than those living to the west of us. Let’s keep it that way! markrushton@abbynews.com

The problem with this old boys philosophy is that it’s not just old boys and their companies anymore. It’s stock holders and board rooms. It’s all share prices and dividends. Let’s see how trickle

down economies are doing. The birthplace was California, and Ronald Reagan was the governor. They are currently bankrupt as a state. Didn’t his economic policies get him into the White House? And where’s the U.S. economy right now? Trillions in debt. Unemployment at its highest in decades. I love McNair’s comments that a broad-

based consumption tax benefits us by curtailing inflation and stabilizing prices. He is really saying that no one can afford to buy anymore, so they stop, and companies have to stop increasing prices. Bottom line, us worker bees have less. It’s that pendulum thing. Reducing taxes on corporations and businesses may have helped to create jobs

once upon a time, but now the jobs created are so low paying that they can’t sustain the economy, so companies are forced to cut back. People earning less are filling the government coffers less. Businesses are contributing to the government coffers less. Now governments are downloading from federal to provincial to municipal. Our property taxes

are skyrocketing, our services are eroding or going metered,

costing us more. Our provincial and federal services are eroding

and going more userpay. Blair Edwards

Fijians win rugby sevens crown

Dan KINVIG

Abbotsford News

The Fijian Ambassadors’ victory at the Abbotsford Rugby Sevens festival on Saturday was a triumph of style and substance. In the tournament final at Exhibition Park, the Fijians spotted the Dog River Howlers of Regina, Sask. an early 14-0 lead. Then they rallied with ruthless efficiency, scoring five consecutive tries to claim a 33-14 lead. The Howlers notched a couple of late scores, but the

The majority of this work will result in single-lane, alternating traffic. However, the installation of three culverts will require a three-day, full road closure to non-residents and non-emergency vehicles. This road closure will occur August 15–17, 2011 between Ross Road and Bradner Road.

Ambassadors cruised to a 33-28 win. Along the way, the Fijians whipped their fans into a frenzy with a scintillating defensive effort that featured a series of crushing hits. “It was awesome,” said Ambassadors manager John Naceba, whose squad was comprised of past Fiji national team members along with several upand-coming players. “We gave them a couple of early tries. But once we got going, we were on our way.”

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Going above and beyond Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre employees recognized for outstanding achievements Two employees at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC) were recently recognized by Fraser Health for their outstanding work. Irene Chambers and Dr. Paul Fluit were the local Above & Beyond Award recipients. “These extraordinary people go above and beyond to give their energy, their focus, their effort, and their time to provide care, service and support not only to patients, clients and residents, but to the larger community we serve,” said Dr. Nigel Murray, president and CEO of Fraser Health. The Above & Beyond Recognition Awards acknowledge exceptional and exemplary efforts of Fraser Health employees, physicians and volunteers to improve health care services to the residents in the Fraser Health region. Chambers was an award recipient in the Living Our Values category. She is an administration assistant for the clinical programs at ARHCC. Chambers sought ways to make transitions kinder and gentler for

her hard-working colleagues. She started the Showcase of Hearts & Recognition Bucks to bring people from different parts of the hospital together and to recognize staff. Chambers also created the Christmas Legacy of Hope, which partnered ARHCC with community groups and leaders to collect toys, food and more than $25,000 for local charities. Dr. Fluit was an award recipient in the Service Delivery category. Described as humorous and cheerful, he works in acute care for elders at ARHCC. He provides compassionate, holistic care that focuses on what the client truly values, and even does house calls. Nominations are made by colleagues, patients and groups outside the health authority. This year, 20 teams or individual winners were chosen. For a complete list of award recipients visit www.fraserhealth. ca/about_us/awards_and_recognition/

Agrifair, rodeo and more You know it as the Fraser Valley’s best little country fair and as the only Canadian Professional Rodeo Association-sanctioned professional rodeo in the Lower Mainland. The 2011 Abbotsford Agrifair and Mighty Fraser Rodeo, coming to the Abbotsford Exhibition Grounds this weekend, is all that and so much more. “We have our roots in agriculture, and that is something we are very proud of, but from our very beginning in Matsqui 101 years ago, we have been so much more,” said Agrifair president Harry deJong. “What we really are, and always have been, is a community celebration – for one weekend each year the entire community comes together to enjoy and celebrate what makes us special and to enjoy a great variety of local, regional and national entertainment geared for the whole family.” The fair opens at 5 p.m. Thursday evening with a special $5 admission rate. Gates are open 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday. Regular admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. But there are plenty of

ways to make that even more affordable. Save $2 off the regular admission by getting your tickets in advance at Abbotsfordarea McDonald’s locations or the Abbotsford and Matsqui Recreation Centres. Get family passes for two adults and two children at the gate for $30. Monday, you can get gate admission and an all-day midway ride wristband for $24. Kids 12 and under can print off a free ticket at www.agrifair.ca. And for those who don’t want to miss a minute of the action, five-day gate wristbands are available for $30. Parking is $5 with no in/out privileges. “When you compare our cost to what it costs to attend a movie, concert or sporting event these days, the value we offer is truly unbelievable. Agrifair is all about family and our prices are designed to ensure all families can afford to join us at the fair,” said deJong, noting they have been able to maintain prices because of the financial and support from both the City of Abbotsford and the local business community. That’s why local residents JOHN MORROW Abbotsford News continue to name Agrifair as Abbotsford’s favourite commuThe Mighty Fraser Rodeo is always a hit with fair goers. We’ve got talent For the past few years, television audiences have been glued to their TV’s all summer long to watch America’s Got Talent. Last year, one of the talents they were able to see make it to the Las Vegas finals was Bert Davis and his trained dogs. Bert is more than just a great dog trainer – he’s actually a very accomplished rodeo clown. This year, Bert will be bringing his talent and his dogs to the Mighty Fraser Rodeo. Al Parsons will be joining this year’s event as well as the new ring announcer. The rodeo will also attract the top cowboys and cowgirls from across North America. They’ll be competing in saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding, steer wrestling, tie down and team roping and barrel racing. Appearances by the reigning Miss Rodeo Canada Princess, Grande Prairie Stampede Queen and other Rodeo Royalty will also be made. Because the action can be quick at times, a new Jumbotron screen with instant replays will be featured at this year’s shows. Catch the two-hour Mighty Fraser Rodeo in the Thunder Bowl at 6 p.m. nightly Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Valley Voices star at Agrifair The annual singing competition is just one of the many acts to dazzle on the main stage during the fair When Agrifair teamed up with Darcy D Vocal Studio and Nuu Music Artist Management three years ago to create the Valley Voices competition, it was an instant success. The competition attracted young singers from across the Fraser Valley, all waiting for the opportunity to present their talent to a larger audience and the chance to win a share of $1,500 from Abbotsford Agrifair. They are also competing for an entry into the PNE Talent Contest, a photo shoot, studio recording time and other prizes. “Again this year, response to the Valley Voices competition has been incredible,” said Agrifair entertainment co-ordinator Brad Styba. “We have 15 outstanding finalists in the 13-18 yearold category and another five in the 8-12 year-old category.” Agrifair will be show-

casing this year’s Valley Voices finalists on the main stage at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon and again at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. “The showcases allow the competitors to get a feel of the stage, which is probably larger than anything they have performed on before, and gives our weekend audiences a taste of the talent we have in this valley,” said Styba. The competitors return to the stage at 11 a.m. Monday for the competition semi-finals, with the top performers in each category then participating in the finals at 1:45 p.m. on Monday. Throughout the weekend, the main stage will also see acts like Stephanie Spence, the Johnson Brothers, Victoria Duffield, gospel singer Kevin Boese and Poppy and the Pistols. Emceeing the main stage is country singer Jack Jackson. But the music is not lim-

ited to the main stage. For great entertainment in a more intimate setting, venture out to the showcase stage next to pioneer corner. It will be presenting a wide variety of acts on Thursday evening. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, perfor mances will run from 2-8 p.m. On Monday, from 1-4 p.m. Performers include Roger Potter, best known for his Neil Young tribute, Daven Atma, Amber Scarfo and Andrew Courtney, Tony O’Hara, Laryssa Campbell, Carolyn Stewart, Rodeo Jones, Ken and Chris, Dan Spenst, and Dave Sumner. The music isn’t limited to the stages. This year, the entire Agrifair grounds could turn into an impromptu stage for Dan the One Man Band. For 20 years, Dan has been entertaining audiences with offbeat humour and onbeat music.

Agrifair: A kid-friendly event

Abbotsford Agrifair prides itself on being a family event. “Families means kids and that’s why we put so much of our effort and resources into creating the best KidZone you can find,” said Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner. The Abbotsford Agrifair KidZone now fills the entire Ball Diamond with entertainment, interactive displays and events and activities young kids are sure to enjoy.

Take your kid into KidZone and leave with a tiger, a flower, or a butterfly. One of the first places your child will want to stop is at the face-painting table.

Once transformed into their favourite character, let them explore all that KidZone has to offer. Watch them play the unique games being offered by Abbotsford Community Services and The Olde Spaghetti Factory, let them loose in the Inflatable Sports Zone, or

have them try the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service fire fighter combat challenge. Get a balloon animal from Mr. Flowers or try the Abbotsford Heat Hockey LTD games. If they like birds and animals, they’ll want to see the live animals from the Greater Vancouver Zoo or the Deep Cove

Gospel Hall Society’s popular interactive Noah’s Ark. While in KidZone, stop by one of the two concession stands for a smoothie, some mini-donuts or other munchies as you watch a demonstration by the Mamba Martial Arts Academy. And don’t miss all the entertainment on the KidZone stage. Gary Savard will be performing magic, there will be demonstrations by the Greater Vancouver Zoo, great music from A & D Music School and exhilarating dancers from Extreme Dance and Creative Edge. KidZone is where the Swing UP Trampoline Wall Show is taking place and is the home of the Trials Stars Bike Demo Team.

For most of the year, Twisters Gym at Exhibition Park is a training and practice facility for a growing number of gymnasts, many of whom are achieving provincial, national and even international success. Last year, for the first time, they opened their doors to the public during Agrifair, offering free drop-in gymnastics sessions in three categories: kids under six, kids between six and 12, and teens aged 13 and up. The kids are introduced to basic gymnastics routines and equipment under the watchful eye of club members and their coaches. Visitors can drop in to Twisters just about anytime during the fair. Between 2-3:15 p.m. each afternoon, the club will showcase its members. Watch the gymnasts perform on a beam, uneven bars, high bars, rings,

a pommel horse or on the floor. “We will have individual floor routines as well as group tumbling and finish each demonstration with a tumbling spectacular,” said Twisters demonstration co-ordinator Sue Tyson. While the demonstrations will include most members of the club, from tykes to tumblers in their 20’s, keep your eye out for the club’s stars: two-time Canadian Olympian Ken Ikeda, Canadian national gymnastics team members Nico Garcia and Zachary Clay and Emily Moorthy, BC’s Level 3 gymnastics champion. “We have some outstanding talent in our club and all our top athletes will be participating in the demonstrations as their training schedules permit which should make it very exciting for our audience,” said Tyson.

The travelling midway by West Coast Amusements is offering a number of deals this year.

Spend all day in the midway It just wouldn’t be a fair without a midway and there’s no better travelling midway than West Coast Amusements. Started by Bingo Hauser in 1962, West Coast Amusements now trucks its huge collection of rides and carnival games to fairs, exhibitions and other events all over Western Canada. In fact, the rides coming to Agrifair are just returning from a successful 10-day stay at the Calgary Stampede. Thursday evening, all rides will be just a toonie each. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all-day wristbands are good for unlimited rides

from when the midway opens until the gates close at 10 p.m. They are $35 each, available at any West Coast ticket kiosk. On Monday, fairgoers can get a combination fair admission and all-day ride pass at any entry gate for $24. “We offered this combination on Thursday last year and it was extremely popular. Since we are only open limited hours on Thursday this year, West Coast consented to make this special offer available on Monday instead,” said Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner.

$101 for the 101st fair

Explore the 101st Abbotsford Agrifair and you could win $101. Agrifair’s Penny the Pig and her friends have positioned themselves all over the fairgrounds. Receive on entry form per family for each paid admission, then find the pigs for your chance to win. Each pig has a clue leading to the next pig. Follow all the clues to find Penny and complete your entry. Each day, Agrifair will award $101 to one successful entrant. “We wanted to celebrate our 101st fair in a unique way so we came up with this interactive contest,” said Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner. “People go around the grounds collecting clues. They will not only get a chance to win our daily prize of $101 but be able to see and enjoy all the different amusements and displays we have at Agrifair

At 11 a.m. Saturday morning, the five teams will be given a list of items to search for on the Agrifair grounds and a series of photos they will be required to take. The original Musical Ride

The Musical Ride originated in 1923 but it was not until three years ago that Agrifair audiences discovered Lord Strathcona’s Mounted Troop. They have quickly become Agrifair favourites and are making their third appearance in four years at this year’s fair. The last Canadian military mounted troop, Lord Strathcona’s Horse Regiment, was formed in 1900 to fight the Boers in South Africa. In 1923, the regiment established a musical ride to perpetuate its mounted heritage. When the Regiment was called to action for the Second World War, the ride was suspended before finally being revived for the regiment’s 75th anniversary in 1975. Since then, the Troop has

become a staple at civic celebrations, exhibitions, festivals and rodeos across Western Canada. The troop includes 20 soldiers dressed in period uniform. Their colourful, choreographed 35 minute performance includes a high-speed demonstration of the historical art of tent pegging, which originated with the British Army in India. Watch the troop in Thunder Bowl at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday, the troop will close the Country Horse Classic in the Agrifair Arena with a 4 p.m. show. Following each performance, Agrifair visitors will be able to meet the horses and soldiers.

Lyndon Sobolik, age 12, from the Surrey 4H club, keeps an eye on the judge while he shows Lindrian Buckeye Iza in the 11/12 Showmanship class at a past Agrifair. He placed second in the class.

Two places to wet your whistle The Fat Pig has retired but there are still opportunities to relax and enjoy an adult beverage at Agrifair. “This year we have two licenced venues at Agrifair,” notes Agrifair general manager Pamela Brenner. The first is the Thirsty Jersey, known as TJ’s. Located in the Food Court, TJ’s will be open from noon until the gates close (opening 5 p.m., Thursday), except Sunday when it

will close at 7 p.m. It will be a very relaxing familyfriendly venue, meaning it will be open to all ages. The second venue will be a new adults-only Beer Garden above Thunder Bowl. The Beer Garden will open at 5 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, and close at 10 p.m. Elvis impersonators, Randy Friskie will also be performing at the venue.

When the Central Fraser Valley Exhibition changed its name to Abbotsford Agrifair, it was for one very important reason. “We wanted to emphasize just how important agriculture is to both the fair and the community,” said Agrifair president Harry de Jong. “Abbotsford is now the City in the Country but agriculture remains our biggest industry and it’s therefore critical to bring the Country into the City for a few days each year.” Agrifair hosts a wide variety of agricultural displays and competitions, including one of the largest gatherings of 4-H’ers in the province. “Our 4-H program has attracted clubs from all over the Fraser Valley to compete in dairy, beef, swine, poultry, lamb and horse competitions. We even have bike and tractor clubs involved this year,” said Agrifair agriculture program coordinator Sarah Nicholls. “Having such a large show brings a lot of animals into the barns for our guests to see and lots of enthusiastic 4-H’ers ready to explain what life is like on the farm,” Nicholls stated. This year, fairgoers will even have a chance to Talk with the Animals. At 1 p.m. each afternoon, 4-H’ers will bring selected animals into Agriland so visitors can get an up-close look at the animals and ask questions of the owners. It takes place again at 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Agriland displays include llamas and alpacas, cattle, ducks, rabbits, goats, pigs and sheep. There will also be regular demonstrations of the BC Dairy Foundation milking parlour, sheep shearing demonstrations at 3 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and calf bottle-feeding demonstrations.
