An argument for the outdoors Some felines can never be “house cats.” That’s the opinion of Laura Van Dijk, a cat lover who is more qualified than most to make such assertions. She has 16 feline friends. Laura has worked at an animal shelter for about 10 years, and over that time has got into the habit of bringing home some of the most unlovable animals – the ones that aren’t getting adopted. “They don’t have a chance, nobody wants them, so they stay with me for the rest of their lives.” Van Dijk has a rural lot in

Chilliwack, and works to give her cats the amount of freedom they need while keeping them safe. About 10 are indoor cats, and live happily in the house. Others that aren’t housebroken live in a large workshop. Those who crave the great outdoors go out during the day. For others, she has a caged “kitty condo,” about the size of a living room, that lets them be outside, safe from predators. They all come inside overnight. “Some cats you cannot keep indoors,” she said. “They have instincts and they like to be outside – it’s a cat.” One cat in particular refuses

to be locked in. He yowls at the door, and scratches at it. Finally, if he doesn’t get let out, he’ll urinate inside the house. So, kitty wins the argument, and spends the bulk of his time roaming. “That cat, you can’t keep in. If he’s outside, he’s happy.” She doesn’t like it when they bring birds home, but says that’s a pretty rare occurrence. The BC SPCA’s official policy is to spay or neuter all cats before they adopt them out, tattoo owner information on them at the time of adoption, and encourage owners to keep their cats inside.

Guthrie said many cat owners keep their pets indoors, but bylaws are needed to enforce responsible pet ownership. She said many “traditionalist” cat owners treat their pet like it’s on its own, and almost disposable. “If it’s gone and disappears, it’s ‘just a cat,’ it’s easily replaced. They have lowered the status of cats to where they’re totally replaceable.” Ken Macquisten, Abbotsford’s first full-time small animals vet, advocates leaving cats indoors, mostly for safety reasons. “The best way to have a cat live into its teens is to have it live inside,” he said. “There are so many hazards out there for cats – other cats, dogs, cars, and people who don’t like cats. It’s a hazardous world out there for felines.” He treats wild animals that have been caught by cats, and agrees cats “are very, very hard on wildlife. “They are urban and rural environmental terrorists.” He saw Guthrie’s documentary, Cat Crazed. “It’s very enlightening. I wish more people would see it,” he said. “It’s important people not demonize cats, and the documentary walked a fine line there.” Guthrie points out that many municipalities in Eastern Canada have cat licensing bylaws, and Calgary got a bylaw passed “by a whisker.” They justify it as a control to wild cat populations, and because the cats themselves are safer. Guthrie said

only about seven per cent of lost cats are ever returned home, but that is much improved in municipalities with cat licensing. “Municipalities have to sign on, and many still feel it’s a political hot potato,” she said. Creston is the first town in B.C. to have cat licensing, adopted in spring 2009. Mayor Ron Toyota said the wild cat population was an embarrassment, and had to be brought down. The bylaw allowed Creston to trap feral and stray cats, to issue cat tags, to limit the pet population to four animals (dog or cat) per household, and take other measures. “It gave us a control mechanism,” said Toyota. “There was a small contingent that didn’t like it, but there was a larger group that thought it was about time.” Looking at a typical progress report, it shows 50 cats trapped. Fifteen were diseased, and had to be euthanized. Nine were claimed by owners, who were fined for their cats being at large. The rest were fixed, and placed for adoption. “It seems to be working,” said Toyota. “We do it with dogs – what’s the big deal with cats? They should be controlled.” Gordon Ferguson, Abbotsford’s bylaw enforcement manager, said there is no cat licensing bylaw on the radar in Abbotsford. He gets occasional complaints about cats digging in gardens, but that has been it. “There’s got to be a reason for it. What are we trying to accomplish?” he said.

Agonizing wait, lousy results Another senseless death of a young person with a life of promise ahead. Another emotion-ﬁlled plea from parents for changes to the laws. And unfortunately, another heart-wrenching case that will likely fail to prompt politicians to act. Kassandra Kaulius, 22, died May 3 when the BMW she was driving was struck by a Ford van at 64 Avenue and 152 Street. Kaulius, a popular athlete, was on her way home after playing softball in Cloverdale when the collision occurred. A 34-year-old Surrey woman is expected to face impaired driving charges in connection with Kaulius’ death. But investigations of the crash and having those charges approved by Crown counsel will take time. So will the wait for numerous court dates and appearances. At a press conference at the Surrey RCMP detachment Tuesday afternoon, Kaulius’ parents made an emotional statement regarding the need to change laws around impaired driving. That may be warranted, yes. But what’s needed even more is the political will and

funding necessary to clear up B.C.’s chronically congested legal system. Press conference organizers noted the Kaulius’ statement was made on the third anniversary of another impaired driving tragedy – the death of four-year-old Alexa Middelaer. The tot died in 2008 after she was struck by a car at the side of a Ladner road while feeding a horse. The driver involved in that crash is appealing convictions of impaired driving as well as her two-and-a-half-year sentence. Carol Berner is out on bail as this case grinds through the courts. Meanwhile, the Middelaer family must put on a brave face and soldier on. Ask any victim of a serious crime and they will tell you after the grief, it’s the agonizing wait for some form of justice that is often the most difﬁcult challenge to deal with. And sadly, when “justice” does arrive, it’s often in the form of inadequate sentencing and weak penalties. How many more families will need to trudge down this path before something is done about the crisis in our courts

Other Hand If you look to the east of downtown Abbotsford, the forested slopes of Sumas Mountain dominate. For most it is an area that is seen but rarely visited. It is assumed a place of woods and wildlife, where few live. Sumas Mountain has a large park at its top, and a considerable adjacent area designated parkland on the south slope. Sounds rather tranquil, but all that may change. There is current application, and there have been others before it, that calls for an open pit mine of some 300 acres right in the middle of it, operational for a span of 100 years. In my mind, that’s forever. Do I have a vested interest? Of course, I live on the only route the trucks will take as they trundle back and forth to the pit. Am I NIMBY? Let’s see, there are already something like 400 huge gravel trucks rolling past the house every day,

most with trailer units, many with incredibly loud engine braking systems. Do I want more of them? Emphatically, No! Can the narrow, extremely steep mountain road handle any more trucks? Another resounding no, mostly for safety reasons. So far there have been no run-aways – most units weigh 100,000 pounds or so – on a route where it is impossible to build run-away lanes. But this is a mountain, and it does get snow. And it has people and families living on it, and school buses active morning and afternoon. I have learned to co-exist with the open pit mine to the north of me. The operators have always been co-operative and, other than the incessant truck traffic, have in my case been pretty good neighbours. Others living here may not agree. But it isn’t just one quarry that concerns. It is the proliferation, thanks to the quality of rock that makes up Sumas Mountain. It is obviously a great lure to those who want to, at very considerable profit, satiate the hunger for gravel that feeds our economy. Today, within a kilometer or so of crow’s flight, there is a mine to the north

of me, and four to the south. Much of the area within city boundaries is slated as future residential, some already here with Auguston just a stone’s throw from my house. The problem is that when the portion of Sumas Mountain where I live was

And that leaves all of us at the mercy of the ministry of mines, whose mandate is to promote mining at the virtual exclusion of everything else. I don’t have a problem with that mandate, but there needs to be other considerations taken when viewing 100-year tenure mining applications in a highly valued recreation area virtually within the “ﬁfth largest city” in British

Columbia; where the only access road is a narrow country lane; where more and more people are slated to live. There is a huge need for crushed rock. It makes roads, concrete, and buildings, and that demand will only grow. But there is a place for everything, and another large mine on this mountain isn’t one of them, despite its convenient location to transportation routes and population centres. There are many other locations throughout this valley where mines can be placed that are far less disruptive, though perhaps a little more expensive for the operator to produce and deliver, and the consumer to purchase. But when looking at a time-frame of 100 years, the big picture needs to be viewed, and many factors taken into consideration, like long-range impacts on the neighbouring areas, loss of recreational potential for the whole Lower Mainland, blocked access to parkland, future population trends, road safety and destruction of property values. This is one mine application that must not proceed, and the mountain should be permanently declared off-limits to any future proposals.

Regulate pesticide sales Regarding the regulation of pesticides. An important point for clarification: Local governments only have authority to control the “use” of pesticides, they do not have the authority to regulate the “sale” of them. Regulation of sale is a provincial authority. A number of municipalities in B.C. have cosmetic pesticide bylaws that ban the “use” of certain products, but a person can walk into any store that sells pesticides and purchase products that the municipality bans under their bylaw. For that reason, municipal pesticide “use” bylaws, while well intended, are a challenge to enforce, because the products can be readily purchased. To regulate the use of pesticides, the regulation must control the sales of product and that is what a provincial regulation would do.

With the above in mind the statement “more than 20 cities throughout B.C. have already banned cosmetic pesticide use. But for such a ban to be effective, it needs to be province-wide, so people can’t buy their dandelion death juice from a neighbouring

municipality” is wrong. Regardless of a municipal pesticide bylaw, a person doesn’t need to go to their neighbouring municipality to buy their dandelion death juice, they can get it at their local hardware store. Rod Shead

Reclaiming gravel pit A former gravel pit on Bradner Road will be transformed into farm land after sitting barren for more than 30 years. The property, located in the 8400 block, was mined in the late 1960s and early ‘70s and predates the creation of the Agricultural Land Reserve. “Whoever owned it back then just mined out the gravel and left it,” said Coun. John Smith. “It’s useless right now.” Present property owner, Lloyd Brown, has been working with the city on a soil deposit plan that would see approximately 62,000 cubic metres of earth brought to the site over a five-year period, to transform it back to usable agricultural land. Last week, council approved the plan, despite local truck traffic concerns.

MCC thrift store to close

An Abbotsford not-for-profit thrift store is closing its doors after 15 years. Above the Underground, operated at #9-31940 South Fraser Way by Mennonite Central Committee BC (MCC BC), will close its doors on May 25 in order to reduce costs, said program manager James Siebert. MCC’s training programs, such as Youth Keep Working (YKW), will continue to operate at MCC’s other thrift shops. In Abbotsford, they are located at 34150 and 31872 South Fraser Way. Above the Underground has been both a second-hand clothing store and a retail/customer service training centre for various MCC BC employment programs. As well, volunteer “associates” received training in customer service, retail sales, promotion and advertising, merchandising and displays, and robbery and theft prevention. They also learned how to write a resume and look for a job.

Mr. Roy Nesbitt of Chilliwack, BC. went to be with the Lord on May 12 at the age of 71. He was a great inspiration to all who knew him and will be dearly missed by his wife Marjorie; their children, Brent (Jody) Nesbitt, and Denise (Ted) Kewin; and their three grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Central Heights Church, 1661 McCallum Rd, Abbotsford.

Born February 9, 1929, passed away suddenly into the arms of his Lord on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 in Abbotsford. He is predeceased by his wife Nell. He is survived by his beloved children Lynn (Dwight), Don Jr., Leana (Doug) and by children from marriage Theresa and Heather (Trevor) and by 10 grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and friends. Don spent most of his life farming in the Ridgedale area as well as delivering mail for Canada Post and working for the Abbotsford School Board before his retirement. In his ﬁnal years he spent many hours volunteering at the Salvation Army and for Habitat for Humanity. Don was a gentle, caring person who accepted everyone. He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. A celebration of life will be held at Sevenoaks Alliance Church (Youth Centre Auditorium) 2575 Gladwin Rd in Abbotsford on Thursday, May 26 at 1:30 pm. Reception to follow. For friends who desire, donations in memory of Don can be made to the Salvation Army, Abbotsford Branch.

WEIGETZ, Dianne (Augustine) Late of Abbotsford, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2011. Born February 10, 1923 in Fisher Branch, MB (Augustine) spent her time during WWII building planes. This is when she got the “nickname” Dianne and met her husband Wayne. The couple moved to Vancouver where they ran a dry cleaning business and began raising their family. Upon moving to Abbotsford Dianne settled in as a homemaker and Mom. She had many hobbies sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and her favourite past time, reading. Along with her hobbies Dianne also worked part-time cleaning office, berry picking with us kids, and supervising as a field hand. Always ready to lend and hand and with her ear for listening, friends and family would often just drop by for a coffee. At Menno Hospital where Mom spent her last days it was much the same. The staff and elders would stop in at Mom’s room just for a chat and wink. We thank all of you for your love and care for Dianne in her last home. Dianne is survived by one sister Marge Barclay, daughters Donna Callahan, Kim (Darrell) Andruk, Darcie (Erwin) Doerfling, and grandchildren Mark, Vincent, Kurtis and Jasmine. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday May 24, 2011 at 11:00 am at St. Ann’s Parish, Abbotsford. Father James Hughes celebrant.
