Abbotsford maternity nurse Lorraine Reimer is used to working in a topnotch hospital with the latest amenities and state-ofthe-art technology. So spending eight days treating people impacted by the cholera epidemic in Haiti was a “sobering” experience, she said. “It feels odd to come back to so many luxuries that we take for granted,” she said yesterday. Reimer left for Cite Soleil – near Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince – on Dec. 31 with a team of medical professionals who volunteered through the relief agency Samaritan’s Purse. Their task was to provide IV therapy to some of the thousands stricken by cholera, a potentially fatal bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. It is spread through ingesting contaminated food or water. Reimer assisted in the women’s ward of a makeshift clinic that could accommodate up to 230 patients and had about 15 medical staff working at a time.

Reimer’s main task was to set up and manage the IVs that replenished patients’ fluid levels. The work was conducted under primitive conditions with no running water, no curtains for patient privacy, no towels and no pillows. Treated water was transported from elsewhere in large, plastic containers.
The clinic itself consisted of a wooden frame, a tin roof and plastic walls. It was located on a playing field surrounded by the rubble of buildings destroyed in the earthquake a year ago, and was protected by razor wire. The volunteers slept in a compound which was a 35-minute drive from the clinic. During the trips to
and from each day, Reimer was able to observe the devastation the earthquake had caused. Tents littered the landscape, and few homes could be seen, but Reimer was impressed with the Haitians’ spirit. ‘I felt like a dog’ Abbotsford woman advocating change Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
Elizabeth Strecker’s phone has been ringing steadily ever since the Abbotsford grandmother made headlines as the victim of “humiliating” treatment at the hands of airport screeners in Calgary. Many of the calls – 16 to 18, she guesses – are from people across Canada who have had similar experiences to hers, who wanted to offer their condolences. Strecker was flying home to Abbotsford earlier this month after a Christmas visit with family, and at the Calgary International Airport, she was reduced to tears by the security screeners. They asked if she was carrying any liquids or gels, to which she answered ‘no,’ not thinking to disclose the gel-filled prosthetic breast she wears after undergoing a mastectomy to treat cancer. Strecker had to undergo a pat-down, and a full body scan, ordered to stand with her legs in a wide stance, with her arms up. She told screeners she could not raise her disabled left arm, but the security personnel were insistent. She pulled her left arm up with her right, but the screeners said that was not allowed. “I felt like a dog who couldn’t follow orders.” In an awkward body position, she stum-

“I was humiliated.” Strecker is still emotional as she recalls the ordeal. She said she might never fly again, but she wants to highlight what she sees as a problem. Phone calls have come from Toronto, Winnipeg, Prince George and across Canada, as people share similar stories with Strecker. “Not many people want to go public, because it is embarrassing,” she said. “These are people who were terribly, terribly humiliated.” One woman from Vancouver urged her to bring a lawsuit, saying that is the only way to effect change. However, Strecker, a widow on a fixed income, is not interested in suing. “Change, that’s all I want,” she said, adding that the security screeners need to be better trained in personal relations. One of the phone calls she received was from the office of MP Ed Fast, and she was to meet with him on Monday afternoon. Another call was from a representative oft the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, who left a message apologizing for the incident. The security agency had about 1,500 complaints from among 51 million Canadian travellers last year. CATSA has reviewed video footage of the screening process with Strecker, and ordered an investigation. It should be completed in about a month. - With files from CTV British Columbia

HEARING FOR OFFICERS A public hearing has been ordered into the conduct of two Abbotsford Police officers who became the subject of a YouTube video while they were making an arrest on Oct. 9, 2009. The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner issued notice on Friday of the public hearing for Const. Doug Lemna and Const. Daryl Young. A hearing date and location have not yet been set. The two officers were carrying out a foot patrol in Ravine Park in Abbotsford when they witnessed what appeared to be a drug transaction in a driveway across the street. Two suspects were ordered to the ground. Lemna, who was an acting sergeant at the time, applied force to the head and body of one of them, the notice states. It also states that Young stepped on the back of the same suspect’s knees, and also applied force with his knee onto the man’s lower back. In addition to the public hearing, Lemna was charged last March with assault in relation to a different incident. That matter is still before the courts.
SNOWMOBILER FOUND A missing snowmobiler from Abbotsford was found safe early yesterday morning after spending the night outdoors in the Coquihalla area north of Hope. The 28-year-old became separated from two friends he was snowmobiling with on Sunday. The two called 911 at about 7:30 p.m. after they failed to locate him. Hope RCMP and Hope Search and Rescue opted not to send a ground crew, due to the avalanche risk, and decided to search by helicopter and then a Buffalo airplane. During the search, they dropped flares, which the man, using his cellphone, confirmed seeing. At first light Monday, search and rescue crews located the snowmobiler. RCMP Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop said the man was assessed at the scene. He was cold and wet, but did not require hospitalization.

Good time to win a car Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
For Brad Hutchinson and his family, winning a new car at Sunday’s Abbotsford Heat hockey game was truly a feel-good story. A week and a half ago, Hutchinson’s daughter Crissy, 24, totalled her car in an accident. In light of that, Hutchinson’s victory in the My New Ride contest, sponsored by the Fraser Valley Auto Mall and the Abbotsford News, was both timely and thrilling. “I’m thinking I’ll spread the wealth on this one,” an elated Hutchinson said afterward. “Crissy is expecting in August, and for a young couple with a mortgage to pay off, this (accident) is a real financial burden. I’ve got to consider what we might do for them to help them out.” Hutchinson, 48, is the principal of Abbotsford Virtual School. He entered his name in a draw during the first intermission

In the second intermission, eight vehicles – one from each Auto Mall dealership – were driven onto the ice. Hutchinson and seven other finalists previously selected in an online contest each chose a car key. Only one of the keys worked, though. The contestants were supposed to take a seat in their vehicle
and start the ignition simultaneously, but Hutchinson, behind the wheel of a blue Chevrolet Cruze, hesitated for a few moments. “I have to admit, I held off a little bit because I was waiting to hear an engine start up on another vehicle,” he explained. “I didn’t want to disappoint myself too quick. “But I finally turned it, and bang, it started up right away. It was like, ‘Wow!’
Unbelievable. “I can’t even imagine that I won. I never win anything.” Hutchinson now has a week to select a vehicle worth $24,000 from a Fraser Valley Auto Mall dealer. Colleen Wilson took home second prize – a $2,500 service package – and third place finisher Steven Bricknell won a $500 parts and accessories package. The prizes are redeemable at any of the auto mall dealers.

blood visible in the centre of the driver’s seat, and it would later be found on the cigarette lighter, steering wheel, and on the inside of the driver’s door. DNA testing determined the blood belonged to Foulds. The file was originally in the hands of the Mission RCMP, later transferred to Abbotsford. Bernard has already lodged a complaint against a Mission member, saying that he did not properly examine the truck. It was not fingerprinted. Police responded to the complaint, saying this work was not done because “...there was no indication nor suspicion of foul play, and indeed there were overtones that the missing person was possibly suicidal...” She also complained that the file was “inappropriately transferred” to the Abbotsford Police Department. Bernard said her common-law husband was a dedicated family man, with no drinking or drug problems. She read his journal, and said even when he went through a divorce and lost his family, which was his most emotional time, there was no reference to suicide. “And even if he had said he was suicidal, it shouldn’t impact on the investigation,” noted her son, Troy Berg. Bernard has been able to think of little else. She has visited the Hayward Lake site many times looking for some clue. She hired a team of cadaver dogs. “I know he’s dead, I’ve come to terms with that,” said Bernard. “It doesn’t matter to me how he died, it matters to me that he’s found.” Three weeks after his disappearance, Bernard hired a private investigator to search. Don Silcox also suspects foul play. “There are some very odd events surrounding that case,” said the former Matsqui Police and RCMP officer. The blood in the vehicle, and the fact that the truck was found so far off the Abbotsfordto-Burnaby route are both suspicious. “From what I can gather, he wasn’t
exhibiting suicidal tendencies, or planning something,” said Silcox. He noted that the morning of the disappearance Foulds was making calls, looking to pick up additional evening shifts at work – not the actions of a man who was about to take his own life, or deliberately disappear. There were no financial transactions, no contacts with people after the disappearance, and Silcox could find no sign that Foulds had a private life that his family and friends did not know about. He said the Mission RCMP did a thorough search of the area, with dog teams and helicopters, and dragging the lake. “They did as much
as they could, as fast as they could,” he said. The PI said it is still impossible to rule out suicide, homicide or an accidental death. He is no longer on the case, which he says has become cold, but hopes the missing man’s wife and the rest of the family get the answers they are looking for. “Burying people is different,” said Bernard. “Now, the first thing you think of when you wake up is him, and the last thing is him.” On Monday morning, it was still too early in the complaint process for police to comment on specific grievances. However, Const. Ian MacDonald said police have maintained an
ongoing dialogue with the complainant, there has been “a wealth of forensic work” done, including processing the vehicle, and the thick file includes 19 people, most of whom have been interviewed. He added the last activity on the file was during August 2010. He said police will try to remedy the complaints. Foulds is Caucasian, about 5’8”, 250 lbs with brown hair. He was last seen wearing black sweatpants, a two-tone grey and black sweatshirt, and black skater-style running shoes. Anyone with information should contact the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.

Pause for thought For the people of Haiti, there is little hope to cling to. It’s been one year since a 7.0-magnitude earthquake brought this nation to its knees. Billions of dollars have been pledged to help the country get back on its feet, but the country still can’t get a foothold it seems. From Haiti’s grim cholera-ridden streets, we in Canada should have a new appreciation for what we have, especially for the basics of food, water, shelter, health care and well-run government. A local nurse recently back from a medical mission said working in Haiti is simply a “sobering experience,” and noted how we take so many luxuries for granted. Reconstruction of the country is moving in slow motion. Only five per cent of the rubble in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince has been cleared since the earthquake. Haiti was already a nation on the brink of disaster before the earthquake hit. According to Canadian officials, 85
per cent of its citizens lived in abject poverty before the quake. Only one in five had access to clean water. After the earth shook, 30 hospitals were destroyed. Three out of four medical schools were levelled, as was the nation’s largest nursing hospital. Add hurricanes, disease and political instability to the mix, and the devastation is worse than some war zones. Meanwhile, many of us Canadians go about our daily lives and find plenty to complain about. Some Haitians lost entire families in the quake and have little to live for. One million people are homeless or in camps. Sexual violence is rampant. There are stories of progress, but they’re coming at a glacial pace. Yet there are enough glimmers of hope that the Haitian people haven’t given up on their nation. It’s a sombre situation that offers us plenty of reasons to pause and be grateful for what we have in Canada.

Other Hand Watching the Golden Globes Sunday night reminded me that once again I have missed seeking an Aluminum Beaver . . . that being the award given by the BC Community Newspapers Association! While not adverse to metalized animals, winning a beaver hasn’t the distinction of receiving Oscars or Globes, which are plated in gold. On the other hand, the metal in the beaver is probably worth more than the golden wash on the movie/TV biz trophies, and it is the equivalent recognition of the contributions community newspapers make to our lives. So how did I miss out on the potential for an award again? Every year just after New Year a cryptic message from the editor appears in my inbox which reads, in the competition for
‘columnist of the year,’ “Deadline next week, although I’d rather get this out of my hair ASAP.” OK, I think to myself, I’ve got to get on this, if for no other reason than to boost my ego – it would be nice to add “Best Columnist in BC” to my resume (not that resumes have much value nor purpose at my age). Then came the realization that I have no definitive idea which of my columns are good or bad. After all, I just write ’em . . . it is the reader who judges that. In addition, I can barely remember what I wrote last week, let alone which were the “best” two columns written over the past 52 weeks! So, for me to have complied with the editor’s request I’d have had to read every column written in 2010, and after the first half dozen or so, I know even I would have been driven to distraction. Thus the reading was never done, the entries never submitted, and again I shall watch from the sidelines as a shining star marches onto the stage to receive his/her trophy (or maybe due to the depressed economy and all

Thus, the reading was never done, the entries never submitted, and I shall again watch from the sidelines. great writing, that often is not truly appreciated. As for my efforts, about the only accolade I can honestly ascribe to myself is that I’m regular – you get a column every week, without fail, 52 weeks a year . . . that in itself should merit an award! However, for me to judge what are my best columns (the worst ones don’t
need adjudication, thanks) simply doesn’t work, because I don’t read them (other than for editing purposes). That is the purview of the reader and they, not the writer, should be the ones who decide what is good, and what is not . . . which columns are worthy of being judged “best.” Therefore, in my relentless quest for fairness (tempered with a large degree of laziness) to all other columnists in the province, I now suggest that you, the reader, decide over the next 52 weeks which two columns are worthy of entry. Then, in the first week of next January, you can email me (thanks to the editor’s always timely note, I’ll even remind you) which ones you think I should enter. Of course, if no one sends any suggestions, not only will my ego be crushed (and my editorial worth questioned) I’ll be forced to wade through a swamp full of columns to try to trap that elusive beaver in 2012.

4) to hold a re-vote when one of those who originally voted on the matter wasn’t present – especially given that councillor voted to wait for the report on the effect development has had. Or perhaps Coun. Harris meant it was not fair to the developer not to rubberstamp the development but to use evidence (the ISMP study) in making the decision on whether to approve the development. Or perhaps Coun. Harris meant it was not fair to put the interests of
Abbotsford’s citizens and area residents ahead of the interests of the developer? “Coun. Lynne Harris said after “serious reflection” away from the “emotion of the table,” she had “changed her mind.” So Coun. Harris was unwilling to stand up and face Abbotsford citizens whose property will be negatively impacted by the development in a forthright manner and vote to approve the development, but is quite willing to slither into a council meeting where she would not
Stop pestering phone calls In the last three weeks, I have received more than 12 phone calls from various candidate offices of the BC Liberal Party. I wouldn’t mind so much if these calls were coming to my home phone, where incoming long distance comes without a fee. Alas, the pesky politicians are calling my cell phone – a phone that carries a cost when incoming long distance calls are received. Now in the last week, the automated calls have been replaced with actual people. Their message is quite likely the same, but I haven’t had the pleasure of hearing all of it, as they usually hang up on me. The reason I’m being hung up on is because I’m informing these folks that I’ve called their offices three times – twice leaving messages, and the third time speaking with one of their
representatives – to demand they remove me from their call list. What is worse, is that it isn’t even me who they are looking for. My cell phone number has obviously been ‘recycled,’ and the Danica they are looking for is no longer answering. When I spoke with the BC Liberal party representative, they were only somewhat apologetic, but ensured me my number would be removed from their list. I’ve received four calls since then. How is this kind of campaigning – a mild form of harassment at a cost to me, no less – even allowed? Stop phoning me. Your pestering phone calls are doing nothing to convince me, my friends or my family, to vote for you. Mardy Bacigalupo
be facing those whose property will be negatively impacted by the development and sell out the interests of those citizens ?
There are several words that describe the behaviour of Coun. Harris vis-à-vis this development, but there was nothing
fair in her betrayal of the residents of the properties downhill and downstream. James W. Breckenridge

““I’m not sure it’s fair to deny this (4633 Sumas Mountain Road) development,” said Coun. Lynne Harris. It seems extremely fair to me to withhold council’s rubberstamping of another development on Sumas Mountain until the study on the effects previous developments had on property downhill and downstream are available. If we are speaking of lack of fairness it seems extremely unfair to: 1) be making this decision without

Get the heartbeat of the family
It strikes me as “duh” that Abbotsford is in such a bubble of affluence, or so it seems to the city council. Am I the only one who hears regular tales of job cuts, job loss and the struggling thousands in our city? The city of Detroit just cut their budget by withholding essential services like garbage pickup, policing, mail delivery, and snowplowing to 20 per cent of their city. Although money and taxes seem to be easier to acquire than common sense, I still have some faith in real, caring elected officials who look
ahead with wisdom, experience and alertness to the times we find ourselves in. Bluntly, TransLink is really just a loose link, with no bottom in their pockets (who are in your pocket). They are way over-funded, way too powerhungry, and have little respect for asking, but only seem to demand. I believe we need a private inquiry into their conglomeracy, and see if private enterprise could show a more efficient way. (We already know the answer.) While I’m on this cash roll, what’s this about 4.5 - 10 per
cent property tax increase? Just for those who need it, since we’re doing so well financially, I guess. To sum up, a lot of things are not well economically, nor in other ways. I would suggest that our city fathers have a serious family meeting and get the heartbeat and feelings of the rest of the family before launching into more millions of dollars in commitments, and maybe ask “can we afford it,” rather than borrowing against our children’s lives. Reimer said no one died in the clinic while she was there, although there were a couple of close calls. Haitians who are stricken by cholera in the middle of the night will often wait until morning to seek medical care, due to safety concerns about venturing out at night. However, cholera can be fatal within four to
eight hours. One man was brought to the clinic at about 4 a.m. with a temperature of 34 degrees C (normal is 37 degrees), indicating he was near death. He was wrapped in silver emergency blankets to contain his body heat and was placed on two IVs. He pulled through. Now that she’s back home, Reimer is eager to volunteer for another similar experience, whether in Haiti or elsewhere. “It’s hard to enjoy an experience that’s such a trial for someone else ... Notice of Public Hearing
A 21-year-old Abbotsford man was saved from drowning by three passers-by after his car went into a water-filled ditch on Sunday afternoon. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the man was travelling in a 1992 Honda Civic at about 12:30 p.m. when he turned east onto Clayburn Road off Highway 11. His car hydro-planed through some water on the road, ran into a hydro pole and became submerged in the ditch. The 51-year-old driver of the car behind him, with the help of another witness, pulled the unconscious man from the vehicle and brought him to a dry patch on the side of the road. A passing nurse then administered CPR until emergency personnel arrived on the scene. The man was airlifted to hospital, where he is in serious condition with head, arm and internal injuries. MacDonald said the Honda driver had been under water for about two minutes by the time he was pulled free. He would have drowned if nobody had witnessed the accident and rescued him.

SkyTrain turnstiles TransLink has signed a contract to bring smart cards to the transit system and turnstiles to SkyTrain. Winning bidders Cubic Transportation Systems and IBM Canada will work with TransLink to finalize the design and schedule. The system is to be activated in 2013. TransLink’s project budget is $171 million, with $70 million in contributions coming from the federal and provincial governments. About $84 million goes to Cubic for the capital cost of the operating system, the supply and installation of the faregates, smart card vending machines, readers and related equipment. ‘Canucks Captains’ book brings memories Local photographer involved in supplying images Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
For local photo g rapher Gary Beale, working on a memorabilia book that chronicles the Vancouver Canucks’ captaincy over the years was both a welcome change of pace, and a challenge. Most days, Beale is snapping photos of catalogue merchandise – outdoor clothing, stuffed animals, cast-iron bathtubs, and the like. So when publisher Jason Farris pulled up to Beale’s Aldergrove studio several months ago with a truckload of hockey gear – collectible cards, game-used sticks and jerseys, and photos – it put a smile on his face. “It was different, said Beale, 58. “Jason comes in with all this memorabilia, lays it all out and says, ‘Here. Make some sense of this.’ “It was a bit of a challenge. “Stacks of printed memorabilia, a bag filled with hockey sticks, that sort of deal. Beale’s camerawork graces the pages of “Hockey Playby-Play – Canuck Captains, a 32-page program-style book in honour of the local NHL club’s 40th anniversary. Images of memorabilia from 10 players who wore the ‘C’ for the Canucks – including Orland Kurtenbach, Don Lever, Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden and Roberto Luongo – are blended with photos of handwritten game notes from broadcasters Jim Robson and John Shorthouse. Beale isn’t necessarily a hardcore hockey fan, but he was fascinated to flip through the play-byplay notebooks. “Those guys, I don’t know how they do it, he marvelled. “They’re doing the play-by-play, and they’re also jotting down all of those details at the same time. “Leafing through those was pretty
cool. Working on the Canucks book also triggered a flood of memories for Beale.
In the late 1970s and early ’80s, he worked at a Vancouver studio that did the Canucks team photos.

Gary Beale worked on a memorabilia book chronicling the Vancouver Canucks’ captaincy.
“It took me back, some of those images I was working with, he said with a smile. “I remembered shuffling lights around for some of those jobs. The book is available online at canuckcaptains. com and in-store at B.C. London Drugs locations. The cost is $14.99, and $4 from each book sold goes directly to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Canuck Place is currently raising funds for a facility adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. “It’s very gratifying to be able to work on a project like that, Beale said.

Ford develops a no-compromise package with the all new Ecoboost engine With its new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, the 2011 Ford F-150 will deliver best-in-class towing capability and torque with outstanding fuel economy. “Customers have embraced the EcoBoost solution of delivering the power they desire with the fuel economy they demand in a no-compromise package,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “From the start, we have pledged that this solution applies to any engine and any customer. The EcoBoost truck engine for the 2011 F-150 will deliver those attributes and has been specially tuned and tested to deliver the best-in-class towing and capability our truck customers demand.” The key technology built into every EcoBoost engine, including turbocharging and direct fuel injection, is particularly relevant to customers of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost truck engine. This combination of turbocharging and direct fuel injection delivers a wealth of low-end torque and maintains it across a broad rpm range, which is key in towing applications. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost truck engine delivers 420 lb.-ft. of torque and 365 horsepower to enable best-in-class towing of 11,300 pounds – more than enough to tow a fully loaded three-horse trailer or 30-foot boat, for example. Plus the EcoBoost truck engine does it all on regular fuel and with outstanding fuel economy. “Truck customers should think of the EcoBoost truck engine as a gas-powered engine with diesel-type capability and characteristics,” said Jim Mazuchowski, V6 engines program manager. “The twin turbochargers and direct injection give it the broad, flat torque curve that makes towing with a diesel so effortless – and hard acceleration so much fun.” Up to 90 percent of the EcoBoost truck engine’s peak torque is available from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm. A typical comparable V8 competitor reaches peak torque at higher engine speeds – around 4,000 rpm – and holds it for a much smaller range. “This is good news for customers because the combination of reaching peak torque at a lower engine speed, and maintaining that torque for a longer period, brings new levels of fuel
efficiency with maximum towing capability other competitors can’t match,” said Mazuchowski. This EcoBoost truck engine also features twin independent variable camshaft timing, or TiVCT, to help save fuel. Ti-VCT provides extremely precise variable – yet independent – control of timing for intake and exhaust valves. Ti-VCT also reduces emissions, especially in situations when the throttle is partially open. Independent adjustment of intake and exhaust valve timing allows maximum fuel economy at part-throttle, while delivering optimized power in full-throttle situations. An added benefit is improved driveability and responsiveness across the torque curve. “We’re testing this EcoBoost truck engine just as we would all of our other F-150 truck engines – we have exactly the same expectations and it has to pass all our truck durability and reliability tests,” said Kris Norman, powertrain operations manager. “From our standpoint, this is an all-new engine specifically designed and engineered for the F-150. Everything is validated to the higher stress levels and higher customer usage levels found in any F-150 engine.” Three avenues that test and validate engines are computer analysis, laboratory testing and in-vehicle validation. For the 3.5-liter EcoBoost application in the 2011 F-150, that includes: More than 1.5 million hours of analytical time More than 13,000 hours of dynamometer testing, including more than 5,000 hours at full boost and more than 2,500 hours at or above 5,000 rpm; the dyno testing helps ensure durability in excess of 150,000 miles More than 100,000 hours of vehicle test time encompassing the full range of potential customer operating conditions All the tests together replicate more than 1.6 million miles of customer usage – the harshest-use customer. A customer profile reflecting extreme-use driving style, road types and vehicle usage, including maximum towing and payload situations, was developed to underpin the testing program.

Ken Hildebrandt, left, and Glen Pinchin perform a scene from Gallery 7 Theatre’s upcoming production of Tuesdays with Morrie. Hildebrant plays young journalist Mitch Albom, while Pinchin takes on the role of college professor Morrie Schwartz.
allery 7 Theatre and Performing Arts explores the meaning of life in its new production Tuesdays With Morrie. Based on true events, the play celebrates the power of friendship and the life lessons an ambitious sports columnist learns from his mentor. “It’s a heartwarming story filled with hope,” said artistic director Ken Hildebrandt. “Despite the negativity that life can deal us, we always have a choice about what we want to do with it. We can choose to let it control us or choose another path.” Young journalist Mitch Albom stumbles across a TV program late one night featuring his old college professor, Morrie Schwartz, who is now suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease. Albom decides to visit the elderly man, and what starts out as a simple reunion turns into an advanced course on life. Weekly conversations centre around themes of love, money, values, acceptance and death. “I think in this day and age when we’re so focused on material wealth and material gain, being challenged to think about the spiritual, emotional and intellectual side of things is important,” said Hildebrandt. “The play will span the broad spectrum of emotions and make it a really inspiring theatre experience.”

Time: 7:00 AM. to 5:00 PM Trees are a significant cause of power interruptions. Contact between trees and power lines can also create a severe danger. Over the next few months we will be pruning and removing trees in the Hatzic North area. Boundaries: Powerlines North of Stave Lake Road at Farms Road, and Pattison Road at Sylvester Road Trees are pruned using the best arboriculture (tree care) practices. Skilled workers employed by BC Hydro are trained in both electrical safety and tree care. Only correct and proper techniques are used to eliminate any safety hazards. Tuesdays With Morrie is based on the bestselling memoir by Albom, which was written to help pay Schwartz’s medical bills. The book stayed at the top of the New York Times bestseller list for more than 200 weeks and has since been translated into 41 languages. Chilliwack resident Glen Pinchin takes on the role of Schwartz. Pinchin has appeared in several plays throughout the Lower Mainland, including Schoolhouse at the University of the Fraser Valley, The Diary of Anne Frank at Gallery 7 Theatre, and You Can’t Take it With You and You Still Can’t with Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre. Hildebrandt joins Pinchin on stage as Albom. He starred in the Gallery 7 productions Chickens, Cotton Patch Gospel, Beau Jest and Macbeth. He also has an extensive resume as a director, producer and lighting designer. Carissa Boynton makes her directorial return in Tuesdays With Morrie. The show runs Jan. 21, 22, 27-29, and Feb. 3-5 at 7:30 p.m., with additional discounted matinees on Jan. 22 and 29 at 2 p.m. Performances are at MEI auditorium, 4081 Clearbrook Rd. Admission is $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and students, and $9 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the House of James in Abbotsford, 604-852-3701.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, January 18, 2011
Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
After gritting his teeth through two rebuilding seasons, University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball coach Al Tuchscherer is finally beginning to enjoy the fruits of his labour. Tuchscherer’s Cascades engineered an impressive upset victory on Friday, knocking off the Alberta Pandas 69-63 at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Pandas boasted a Canada Westleading 12-2 record coming in, and were No. 7 in the national rankings. The Pandas bounced back to split the two-game set, winning 70-52 on Saturday, but it’s clear that the best is yet to come for the youthful Cascades. With the exception of veterans Alyssa Gaukel and Tessa Klassen, every player on the roster is in their first or second year of eligibility. At 8-8 on the season, UFV is currently seventh in Canada West, but at the rate they’re improving on a game-to-game basis, the upper echelon doesn’t seem so far away. “The mindset is different than it was last year,” Tuchscherer said, reflecting on his team’s performance this season after going a combined 6-35 over the previous two Canada West campaigns. “There’s higher expectations (internally). We know we can play with these teams. “Every game is a learning pro-
cess for us. It’s exciting, and the players are hungry for that.” Klassen, UFV’s fourth-year point guard, led the way on the weekend, scoring 14 points in Friday’s win and 18 points on Saturday. The Wierks sisters, Nicole and Sarah, both had big games Friday – Nicole, a secondyear forward, had a team-high 15 points, while Sarah, a rookie centre, had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Cascades men’s hoopsters followed a similar script, beating Alberta Friday (80-69) before losing Saturday (84-70). UFV led by as many as 22 points in fourth quarter and cruised to victory in the opener, with Sam Freeman (26 points) and Joel Friesen (23) pacing the offence. On Saturday, Friesen made the play of the game, throwing down a huge two-handed dunk over Alberta’s 6’11” centre, Robert Dewar. But Alberta came out with a ton of energy and built an early 10-point lead. The Cascades battled back to tie the game before the first quarter was up, but the Golden Bears pulled away down the stretch as UFV struggled shooting the ball from beyond the arc (7-for-26). The Cascades men hold down the eighth and final Canada West playoff spot with a 6-10 record. Q The UFV hoopsters are off this weekend, and return with a pair of home games against the Regina Cougars Jan. 28-29.

A national TV audience and 6,023 fans at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre got every last drop of entertainment value out of the Abbotsford Heat and Toronto Marlies on Sunday afternoon. The two North Division rivals battled tooth-and-nail in a game that was broadcast coast-to-coast by the CBC, with the Marlies ultimately prevailing 3-2 in a shootout. Jerry D’Amigo, the final shooter in the breakaway contest, was the hero. After the first nine shooters failed to score, the Marlies forward ended RHEAULT matters by picking the top corner over Heat goalie Leland Irving’s glove. “I like to go full-speed and kind of put on the brakes a bit,” D’Amigo said afterward, recounting his game-winner. “He (Irving) left the glove wide open, so I just shot it. “I’ve never been in this position before with a CBC game. It was nice, with the atmosphere and everything.” The Heat (19-17-5) dominated for long stretches, but missed a golden opportunity to draw even with the Marlies (20-16-7) for third place in the North. The Heat surrendered a 2-0 lead, and came up empty on a pair of power plays in Continued on A25

nating defensively, and racking up a series of signature victories in the process. The Hawks’ latest high-profile triumph came on the weekend at the Top 10 Shootout, a prestigious tournament at Coquitlam’s Centennial Secondary. Mouat laid waste to Fleetwood Park, Maple Ridge and Argyle en route to the final – their smallest margin of victory was 29 points – and they capped the event with an impressive 68-54 victory over the No. 1-ranked Brookswood Bobcats of Langley in the title game. A f t e r w a r d , Thompson was full of superlatives to describe her team. Ashleyn Sarowa, who scored a game-high 23 points in the final, had “the tournament of her life.” Kayli Sartori, who had 17 points in the title game and earned tourney MVP honours, “played out
of her mind.” “This is the most amazing group I’ve ever coached, on and off the court,” Thompson enthused. “They really like each other and support each other. They’re a true team, and as a coach, that’s what I love.” All that’s left for the Hawks is to ascend to the No. 1 provincial ranking. They’re currently No. 3 among AAA teams, but they’ve now won two of three against Brookswood this season. Mouat dropped a two-point decision to the Bobcats in the final of their own Century 21 Classic to open the season, but beat Brookswood by 11 points at a tournament at Douglas College over Christmas. In addition to Sartori’s MVP award, Jaslyen Singh was a first team all-star at the Top 10 Shootout, and Sarowa was a second-teamer.
