Marjorie Plowright has cared for thousands of babies in her lifetime. The Abbotsford Public Health Unit volunteer has spent much of her free time over the last 44 years at the centre measuring, weighing and preparing infants for nurse visits. But at 89, Plowright is ready for some rest. “I shall certainly miss it though,” she said. “It’s a nice atmosphere. You always find something to laugh at with the children. I never could get over the way they would stare at each other. The little children there always look at each other as if they hailed from Mars or something.” Plowright left England in December, 1946 on a ship bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia. She arrived in Abbotsford by train a month later to marry her husband Ron. At that time, there were only about 2,500 people living in the city. The family homestead was situated on 24 acres where a Red Robin restaurant is now Continued on A6

Truck that hit overpass also took down Telus lines Maple Ridge mishap followed Abby incident Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
The semi-trailer truck that struck the underside of the Sumas Way overpass on June 7 also took down some overhead lines in Maple Ridge later that day, the Abbotsford News has learned. The semi, which was carrying a large tank, took down Telus wires hanging over some CP rail tracks on 230 Street in west Maple Ridge at about 2:45 p.m. Vehicular and train traffic were both stopped while the lines were cleared. Police, Telus workers and firefighters attended the scene. Telus spokesperson Shawn Hall said the owner of the semi, Ludeman Trucking Ltd. in Surrey, did not have prior approval from Telus to travel under the lines, which he said is required with any load over the legal limit of 4.1 metres. The load in question was

A semi-trailer unit that hit the Sumas Way overpass later dragged down phone lines in Maple Ridge. 4.8 metres high. He said Telus lines are typically maintained at a height of five metres, but arrangements will be made to move them when required. “Obviously, if we don’t know the move is happening, there’s not much we can do.” Louise Yako, president of the B.C. Trucking Association, said a permit must be issued by the Ministry of Transportation any time a carrier is mov-
ing something beyond the legal height, width or weight. The proposed route must be submitted to the ministry and approved before the cargo can be moved. Additional approval must be obtained by agencies such as BC Hydro or Telus if an over-height load is passing under power or phone lines. At about 11 a.m. on the day that the truck took down the
overhead lines, it hit the underside of the Highway 1 overpass on Sumas Way, resulting in about $300,000 damage. The truck was en route from Surrey to Maple Ridge. At the time, a spokesman with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said the trucking company had been issued a permit to travel that route, but the document listed the height of the truck as 4.8 metres. The height clearance of the overpass is 4.62 metres. An investigation will now determine who was at fault in both accidents. A spokesman with Ludeman Trucking said the company, which specializes in moving over-sized cargo, regularly uses the route that was employed that day without difficulty and had the required permits. He did not want to provide further comment, saying the incidents are under investigation.

Watson has an extensive criminal record and has previously been convicted of assault, carrying a prohibited weapon, driving without a driver’s licence, and breach of probation, according to the provincial court database. The second incident occurred between 1 and 2 a.m. on Sunday at the skateboard park located near Old Yale Road and McMillan Road.
Two people came upon a 23-year-old man who had been stabbed once in the face and once in the abdomen/hip area. The victim reported that he had been skateboarding when a dark sedan pulled up, and two men got out of the vehicle, while a third remained in the car. The victim said the two men approached him, made some comments that didn’t make sense, and then attacked him before grabbing his skateboard and fleeing.

A man has been charged with a stabbing that occurred in Abbotsford on Friday afternoon, and police are seeking witnesses to a second unrelated incident on Sunday morning. At about 2 p.m. Friday in the Garden Village mobile home park at 1884 McCallum Rd., a neighbour heard screams coming from one of the units, and saw a man running up the driveway. The neighbour found a 71-yearold woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. The Good Samaritan called 911 and provided police with a description of the suspect, who was arrested on McCallum Road. The suspect is the 48-yearold son of the victim. Murray Gordon Watson of Vancouver has been charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. Const. She would spend a couple mornings a week there, looking after about 20 children a day. The farming community had a grocery store, cafe and post office located near Five Corners in downtown Abbotsford. Plowright says Fridays were the big shopping night of the week. “The mayor came out, everybody came out and wandered around Abbotsford,” she added. Plowright began volunteering with

She believes this is a result of people becoming too busy with work. “When I came here, women didn’t go to work very much,” she said, adding that most volunteers now are women over the age of 60. “I think it’s worthwhile. It helps the whole community.” Plowright will work her last day at Abbotsford Public Health Unit on June 23.

YSP wins at MMVAs Award won’t prompt end of hiatus, but excites band
Ashley WRAY Abbotsford News
Abbotsford’s You Say Party (YSP) took home a MuchMusic Video Award on Sunday in Toronto. Sean Wainsteim won Director of the Year for the Lonely’s Lunch music video, which was also nominated for the MuchFACT Indie Video of the Year. Stephen O’Shea, one of the founding members of YSP and its bass player, said they are all really proud of the win – not only for themselves but also for the director. O’Shea said they begged Wainsteim to come out of retirement after he shot their Monster video in Prague. Lonely’s Lunch was filmed in India. “To have this honour, it’s bizarre,” said
O’Shea. “We started this band out of the boredom we had in Abbotsford and in seven to eight years we’ve come to be cultural ambassadors of this town.” Currently, the newwave, dance-punk group is on hiatus. The members made the announcement on their website in April, which came almost a year after the death of their drummer Devon Clifford,
who passed away after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage while on stage during a performance in Vancouver. While the recent award has excited the band, they’re not ready to return to the stage just yet. “We’re officially on hiatus, taking some time to ourselves and trying to heal a lot of the pain and the stress that came with the band, and we’re
living our personal lives,” said O’Shea. “I don’t think we’re done with music. We’ll continue to play, whether it’s together or separate, under the YSP banner or not. But I’m optimistic for another opportunity to get together with my friends and play. Our friendship is more important than any attention we’re getting.” The original group included graduates
from MEI, W.J. Mouat and Langley Fine Arts School. Becky Ninkovic was on vocals, Krista Loewen was on keyboards before she departed last year following Clifford’s death, and Derek Adam played guitar. Last year, Robert Andow was added on synthesizer and Al Boyle on drums. Since its inception, YSP has released three albums. Not to be combined with any other promotion.

The city has received complaints about new houses that are out of scale with existing homes.
Monster homes cause friction Ashley WRAY Abbotsford News
The issue of monster homes is creating a divide among Abbotsford residents. Complaints have been filed with the city regarding new home developments in mature, single family neighbourhoods – areas where the majority of homes were built before 1990.
The concer ns were outlined in a presentation by Carl Johannsen, director of community planning, during last week’s council meeting. Many believe the new homes are “out of scale” and “out of character” with the existing homes, causing “friction between residents.” It was also sug-
gested that the height and size of the new houses create privacy concerns and cause shadowing of adjacent yards, resulting in loss of mature trees. In addition, they create more traffic and areas needed for parking. Three juxtaposed housing examples were provided in the presentation, with one located south

of Mill Lake Park, another near Old Yale Road in Clearbrook and a third near TenBroeck Elementary in Clearbrook. The report also highlighted Surrey’s response to the same issue, which resulted in modified zoning to ensure future developments are more consistent with the neighbourhood. The amendments were determined following public consultation. Similar bylaw and zoning changes were recommended by Abbotsford city staff. Also highlighted were the disadvantages, including devalued property and negative reactions from landowners who benefit from the current conditions. Mayor George Peary said it is a complex issue and requires more research. He commissioned city staff to continue to look at what other jurisdictions are doing and develop more recommendations. Peary added that before any decisions are made, whether something is implemented on a neighbourhood basis or city wide, a public consultation will take place.

Help Your Local Heroes AND WIN BIG Every day throughout British Columbia, thousands of heroes risk their lives to help others. Fire fighter Terry Hughes is one of those heroes – whose job it is to keep others safe, even if it means risking his own safety. He is also a Regional Director of the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund, where he often meets heroes of another kind – burn survivors. With the loyal support of more than 3,800 fire fighters across the province who volunteer their time – not to mention generous members of the public who donate – the Burn Fund offers a variety of programs to support survivors of all ages. "With our annual summer Burn Camp for kids, we give children survivors a chance to be among their peers and really just enjoy the experience of camp," Hughes said, noting the Burn Fund's reach extends throughout B.C. and the Yukon. "Through the various programs run by the Burn Fund, we give burn survivors the ability to gain confidence and move forward through life." As one of the largest fundraisers for the Burn Fund (www.burnfund.org), Hughes said the money raised by the Hometown Heroes Lottery provides a large and important boost to the fund's programs. "We depend very much upon the Hometown Heroes Lottery," he said. "The funds help us to continue the good work that the Burn Fund does throughout the year, and we couldn't continue without

Ugliness online Officially, the Vancouver police department says they had last Wednesday’s Stanley Cup riot under control by 11:45 p.m. But the thuggery that smashed and burned its way through the city’s downtown continues – it’s moved online. There’s no doubt the Internet played a role in the mayhem. There have been reports of Twitter postings and text messages being exchanged Wednesday afternoon, long before the puck dropped to begin Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final, that trouble was brewing. And when it did get started, it seemed everyone wanted to capture a moment to post on their blog or Facebook page. Young people posed and smiled in front of burning cars and smashed storefronts. In the hours and days after order was restored, the fallout from the riot moved into the virtual world. Some of it has been good; volunteers were organized via social media for a morning-after clean up, individual acts of heroism were highlighted and lauded,
an international sensation was created over a photo of a couple exchanging a kiss amidst the mayhem. But much has been as hateful as the riot itself. The very same mob mentality that rampaged through Vancouver’s streets has now infected its online afterlife. Some people who’ve had their photos posted on websites seeking to identify the riot’s troublemakers have been harassed, their families threatened. There’s no doubt the people who participated in the violence and mayhem should be held accountable. Many of them are now learning valuable lessons about the consequences of their behaviour that night and the fragility of online anonymity. But virtual vigilantism only perpetuates the ugliness that fuelled the riot, and further blackens the city’s already charred reputation. Leave it to police and legal authorities to investigate what happened that night and prosecute who was responsible. – Black Press
‘Respect’ lost in the lexicon of parenthood Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand I remember sitting in an open-topped bug-eye Austin Healy Sprite on Granville Street, almost at Georgia, in a traffic jam where the constantly blaring horns echoed off buildings. It was November 28, 1964 and the BC Lions had just won their first Grey Cup in Toronto, beating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 34-24. Since we knew there would be a celebration in downtown should the Lions win, my buddy and I wanted to be part of the jubilation in the streets. And we were, and other than the thought about how funny it would be to pop the hubcaps off some of the cars surrounding us in the jam, that ‘thought’ was about as far as mayhem that we, or anyone else, got up to that night. Besides, it was late November with the top down, and the most pressing thing once we cleared traffic was to find somewhere warm.
It never occurred to us, or to the thousands of others celebrating the win, that setting a car on fire would do the same thing. But in those days people had respect for authority, for other people, for property, and for ‘being nice.’ It was something that was drilled into us by our parents. Obviously today that isn’t the case ... somewhere in the lexicon of parenthood, many have neglected to instill respect in their children as a paradigm of life, and thus we saw and were horrified by what happened last Wednesday night after Boston’s humiliation of the Canucks. If there is a lesson to be learned from this, it is that parents must not only accept, but practise, that their role is to teach their children and not, thanks to their busy lives and striving to have more than the generation before them, leave it up to others. Or to ignore it completely in this age and attitude of tolerance and ‘kids will be kids’ – until they do something so terribly wrong, driven by the desire or peer pressure to do what everyone else is doing, including getting caught-up the euphoria of rioting, with no thoughts of consequence.
However, since the riot and its aftermath have been canvassed thoroughly in all the media, in public outrage and with a government promise of “we will get them and they will pay,” I will not further proselytize. This sad and disgraceful event will,
Many have neglected to instill respect in their children as a paradigm of life. like the HST, have legs that will continue the discourse for weeks and months to come. It will have, I hope, a profound effect on how we deal with future gatherings, how the justice system will cope with it, and how we as a society come to grips with a mentality that freedom is an applicable right no matter its consequences. At least with the above-mentioned HST, we are about to embark on a demo-
cratic exercise to determine, once and for all, its fate. As I wrote in this space last year, I do not have a problem with the HST, and in fact, despite what even the government says about it adding additional costs to us all, have not noticed any significant increase in what I spend. True, restaurant meals have gone up seven per cent, but unless you drop a huge amount on food and liquor the tab has only risen by cents or a few dollars. Everything else I buy has always been taxed by the PST/GST. With the ameliorating fact of a two per cent reduction if the HST is retained, I am far better off with it than without it. Thus, when the mail strike ends, and my ballot arrives it will be returned with an X in the “No” box because I believe that I, and everyone else, will be far better off keeping the HST than going back to the old PST system. So give thanks to Bill Vander Zalm – his ravings have resulted in a two per cent reduction in the tax you will pay after 2014 – but don’t support his cries for killing the HST. It will cost you in the long run. markrushton@abbynews.com

Riot appalls visitor As a South African visitor to Vancouver I am appalled at the behaviour of so-called fans of the local hockey side. To riot and cause such mayhem and destruction to property after their side lost to Boston is totally unacceptable in my book, but of more concern is that the police and fire department just stood by and did nothing. I question why no action was taken to curb this kind of behaviour. Where else in the world would this sort of thing be tolerated? J. A. Stewart
letters True fans don’t riot
True hockey fans don’t do things like the riot. Hockey fans are captured by the fast pace, great playmaking ability of their team, and the opposition. Hockey fans go to their spouse’s games, their friend’s games, their children’s games in all arenas, throughout the year. They sit in cold rinks with only a snack from the machine and a bad hot chocolate from the concession (if the rink has one). They encourage the love of the game. They volunteer wherever possible for that love of the game.
They coach, assist, manage, train, score keep, run the clock, bring the team snacks, and shuttle kids to and from the rink. They run the rinks; locally, regionally, provincially, and nationally. They plan tournaments and support the same through donations and ticket purchases. They buy or volunteer to sell 50/50 tickets at the game. True hockey fans are the ones who encourage hockey players and are great lovers of the game – our game. Sam Stone
Put some blame on news media
Let us put the blame for the riot on those responsible. Everybody including the sportscasters said that the Canucks would win this Game 7 absolutely. Who would have thought with all the
hyperbole going on that they would lose? There would be a lot of people getting mad after spending all that money. This could spark a riot and it did. I do not hear any of the sportscasters
apologizing or accepting any blame. At least give some of the blame to the news media, and all those making money off this hockey game.

Document outlines Abbotsford/Mission agreement, highlights co-operation
The principles for amending the existing Abbotsford/ Mission water agreement and reallocating water supplies will soon be outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two communities. Announced on Thursday, the draft is also meant to reflect the longstanding co-operation between the two communities in the areas of water supply, wastewater treatment, transit and recycling, said Abbotsford
Mayor George Peary. The Abbotsford Mission Water Sewer Commission, of which Peary is the chair, will be writing the document. While Abbotsford intends to move forward with the Stave Lake Water Project alone, subject to referendum approval, Peary said they respect Mission’s decision not to support the Public-Private Partnership (P3) model. “In the spirit of continued co-operation, the MOU will

sive scope of the U.S. Open. To his credit, the 23-year-old Abbotsford golfer took it all in stride, and turned in a terrific performance at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD. On Sunday, Hadwin shot a three-under 68 in the fourth round of the Open. The five-birdie, two-bogey round left him at three-over for the tournament, tied for 39th. Only six golfers shot better than Hadwin’s 68 on Sunday, and he was the top finisher among the three Canadians in the U.S. Open field. He also finished ahead of such luminaries as current world No. 1 Luke Donald (+5), three-time major winner Padraig Harrington (+5), and four-time major champ Phil Mickelson (+7). “Walking around the locker room, seeing Phil and (Retief) Goosen and (Sergio) Garcia and all those guys, it’s a very cool experience,” Hadwin told The News on Monday. “But I feel like I handled it the proper way. I treated it like I was working there, and I got the job done. “Those guys are No. 1 players, and they may play their best more often than I do. But if I play my best, at least I know I can compete. And that’s pretty cool.” Hadwin authored one moment, in particular, that was worthy of the time capsule. On Friday, he was only able to finish 17 holes before second-round play was suspended due to darkness. He went to bed knowing he knowing he needed a birdie on his final hole – the par-5 ninth – on Saturday morning to get to four over par for the tournament and make the cut. Hadwin did just that, hitting his third shot – a wedge from 98 yards – to within six inches for a tap-in birdie. “It was a lot of fun,” said Hadwin, who earned $41,154 for his U.S. Open finish. “The crowds are a lot of fun to play in front of, and it’s a neat experience to hear a crowd roar for you when you do something good.”

Strelau’s late goal lifts PDL Mariners to victory Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
The Premier Development League side from Magnuson Ford Mariners FC split a pair of road games in Washington on the weekend. On Friday, the Mariners battled the undefeated Northwest Division-leading Kitsap Pumas to a stalemate through 75 minutes, only to fall 3-1 on a pair of late goals. The following evening, Cody Strelau’s goal in injury time lifted the Abbotsford side to a 2-1 win over the North Sound SeaWolves. “There was a certain amount of relief with the victory on Saturday,” Mariners coach Ian Knight said, reflecting on the weekend. “The second-half performance wasn’t the best – we fell back into that mode we’d been in against Kitsap for the last 20 minutes, allowing them to get a couple goals on us.
We made silly errors, really, because of it. But we’re certainly relieved and thankful for the three points.” On Friday, Kitsap’s Bryan Burke opened the scoring in the 57th minute, and Mariners midfielder Sasa Plavsic equalized in the 75th. But the Pumas pulled away down the stretch. Against North Sound, the Mariners found themselves in a very comfortable position at halftime. They led 1-0 on Danfi Parker’s goal, and the SeaWolves had a player sent off just before the break. But 10-man North Sound gave the Mariners fits in the second half, and got the equalizer from Todd Wallenius in the 86th minute. But in the waning moments, defender Strelau made a run into the box, tracked down a deflected shot and booted it home. “Credit to the oppo-
Division. “But the character of the team shone through. They didn’t give up on it. They knew it was a game they should win.” The Mariners face the Victoria Highlanders on the road this
sition – they worked their socks off and forced us into mistakes, and for long periods in the second half, took the game to us,” said Knight, whose team’s 2-4-2 record is good for sixth out of eight teams in the Northwest
Saturday, then return to Bateman Park for a
home game against the Washington Crossfire
on Wednesday, June 29 (7 p.m. start).

Hyundai revolutionizes the subcompact car with the all-new Accent Hyundai Motor America introduced the all-new 2012 Accent with bestin-class standard fuel economy and power at the New York International Auto Show earlier this year. This marks the debut of the latest version of the popular subcompact sedan and the new top-of-the line, more functional Accent five-door. The 2012 Accent is slated to hit dealerships this summer. Accent redefines expectations in the subcompact category by offering the company’s distinctive and upscale “Fluidic Sculpture” design, best-inclass standard fuel economy, exceptional roominess and a full complement of standard safety features. Despite surprising technology and a significant increase in safety features, Hyundai will hold the line on pricing from the prior generation to continue delivering unmistakable value to customers. “The 2012 Hyundai Accent reinvigorates the subcompact segment, similar to what the game-changing Sonata and Elantra have done in their categories,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Accent’s class-leading standard fuel economy is another showcase of Hyundai’s dedication to improving fuel efficiency with advancements to traditional gasoline powered vehicles and is the fourth nameplate in Hyundai’s lineup delivering 40 mpg on the highway.” The 2012 Accent’s all-aluminum 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder engine utilizes the latest engine technology to deliver a class-leading 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque and a best-in-class standard 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway fuel economy rating. The engine’s most notable feature is its use of GDI, a first for the subcompact category. By precisely controlling the injection of fuel, GDI allows for better fuel economy, increased power and reduced emissions. The application of Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts allows for increased efficiency, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Other elements resulting in reduced fuel consumption include an Alternator Management System, an offset crankshaft design, variable induction system and electronic throttle control. To reduce lifetime operation costs and increase reliability, the Gamma features a maintenance-free silent roller timing chain. The Gamma also uses innovative antifriction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating.

After four surreal days spent celebrating the Boston Bruins’ Stanley Cup triumph, Scott Bradley landed back home in Abbotsford on Monday afternoon. Later this summer, the Cup will join him. “They haven’t made any definite schedules yet,” said Bradley, the Bruins’ director of player personnel. “But I get the Cup for a day,

ment.” Bradley, a member of Boston’s hockey operations department for 19 seasons, played a major role in building the team that denied the Vancouver Canucks their first Stanley Cup in a thrilling seven-game series. Much of the Bruins’ homegrown talent – including the likes of Milan Lucic, Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci and Brad Marchand – was drafted under his direct supervision. Last Wednesday at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, Bradley headed down to ice level after Marchand’s emptynetter sealed a 4-0 Boston win in Game 7. As the final seconds ticked away, his thoughts turned to his father. Bart Bradley preceded his son in the Boston organization – he worked in the scouting department for 30 years, and earned a Stanley Cup ring in 1972. He passed away five years ago at the age of 76, after a battle with pneumonia. “It was so close to Father’s Day, and with my dad being such a big part of the Bruins and him not being there . . .” Bradley mused, his voice trailing off. On the ice, Bradley waited his turn to hoist the Cup. “Getting to lift the Cup over my head on the ice was something special,” he said. “It’s hard to describe. It’s like, ‘Is this really happening?’” Bradley joined the team in the locker room, where he sat beside the Cup for a long time and simply stared at the holy grail in disbelief. Then he hopped on the team charter back to Boston – “We were dancing in the aisles the whole way,” he said – where he rode in the Stanley Cup parade. The Canucks were heavily favoured heading into the final, but few pundits would have predicted the Bruins would hold the NHL’s most potent offence to just eight goals over the seven games. “We had something inside us where we weren’t going to quit,” Bradley said. “That shows you the character of the players. They knuckled down, and they’re champions.”

After suffering their first loss of the season last week, the Valley Rebels served notice on Friday that result will be the exception rather than the rule. The local senior B men’s lacrosse team turned in a near-flawless offensive performance en route to a 20-3 victory over the North Shore Indians at MSA Arena. “Our offence was just ridiculous, Rebels coach Jim Nishiyama said. “We were just moving the ball really

It was just boom, boom, boom, and in the net. Max Gallant (four goals and five assists), Brian Poole (one goal, seven assists) and Graham Wiedenhammer (four goals) led the offensive assault as the Rebels boosted their leagueleading record to 8-1. The Rebels are back in action on Friday, when they host the Ladner Pioneers (8 p.m., MSA Arena).
