Goal: No gang murders in 2011 Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has set a goal this year to reduce gang crime by a further 10 per cent and to have no gang-related murders. The APD’s newly released strategic plan for 2011 states the department will continue to introduce programs to “educate about the risk of gang involvement” and will “target violent gang members to investigate and bring forward charges.” However, the specific initiatives have not yet been revealed. “We’re looking at doing some more things with the gang suppression unit (GSU), but we’re not letting them out of the bag
yet,” said Const. Ian MacDonald. Last year, the APD made reducing gang violence a priority, following the warfare that spread into city streets and resulted in eight gang-related slayings in 2009. The GSU was formed in April, and police compiled a “top 10” list of gangsters that later expanded and now includes a roster of about 180. There were four murders last year, with two being linked to gangs. Concerns have arisen most recently about the Duhre crime group and those battling for control. Two targeted shootings, neither resulting in injury or death, have so far been
recorded in 2011. The APD’s strategic plan is also looking for reductions in another area – vehicle-related fatalities and injuries. MacDonald said the department has set an objective of no pedestrian deaths this year, and a 15 per cent reduction in traffic injuries. Last year, there were 15 vehicle-related fatalities, up from six in 2009. Of those, eight were pedestrians, one was a longboarder and another was a cyclist. Four officers have been added to the APD’s traffic section, and enforcement of drivers and pedestrians will be increased. Street disorder and problem residences will also be Continued on A7
FATAL TRUCK CRASH A 43-year-old Mission man died after the truck he was driving went through a guard rail and plummeted 12 metres down to a creek bed on Sunday afternoon near Hope. RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said the man, whose name has not been released, was hauling groceries in a 2010 Peterbilt semi-trailer. He had just rounded a gentle curve on Highway 1 when he lost control of his vehicle. He crossed into the oncoming lane while on the Emory Creek Bridge deck, and smashed through the guard rail. The driver was the lone occupant of the truck, and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. At the time of the accident, there was a combination of compact and fresh snow on the road.
GUNS FIRED Abbotsford Police received multiple calls about gunshots being heard in the 33000 block of Huntingdon Road on Sunday night. Almost a dozen officers from the patrol division, the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team and the K9 unit were called to the scene. They blocked off part of the road, and cordoned off the house. Four men were arrested at the scene and taken into custody. Three were released, after police determined the fourth person was to blame. Const. Ian MacDonald said the 19-year-old man had taken a rifle and a shotgun into the backyard of the home and fired them into the air. He now faces a charge of careless use of a firearm. His name has not been released.

From the moment the trucks pulled onto the stage and the pyrotechnics blasted off, Toby Keith had his legion of fans standing, clapping and dancing, as the country star took the crowd on a musical journey. Playing his latest hits from the album, Bullets In My Gun (2010), to old classics like How Do You Like Me Now and As Good As I Once Was, Keith whipped the big silver buckle and cowboy hat crowd into a frenzy of fun. Combining his powerful singing voice with an amiable personality and quirky sense of humour, Keith entertained the crowd on a variety of levels. Keith’s presentation was well-rounded, including a video presentation to start, plenty of audience interaction, explosions, streamers and music you can’t help but hum in your head hours later. While a huge supporter of the U.S. military, Keith knew his audience well as he thanked Canada’s firefighters, police

When he sang his hit song Courtesy of the Red White and Blue, which is dedicated to the U.S. armed forces, he emphasized the words “red” and “white” as waving Canadian flags appeared on the video screen. Keith is the perfect stereotype for a
country singer – tall, broad-shouldered, bearded and looking for a good time. He gives the impression he’d be equally comfortable on stage singing before thousands, or sitting on a bar stool, drinking beer and chatting with friends. Judging from the reaction of the modest crowd who
came to see Keith at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre Sunday night, he could have done either and still received a standing ovation. The long night of entertainment began with two opening acts. One More Girl, a pair of singing sisters from Maple Ridge, opened the show. Carly and Britt McKillip were the perfect start as they helped settle the audience in with their fine vocals. On stage next was Canadian country sensation George Canyon. No stranger to Abbotsford, Canyon has played here many times, including opening for Alan Jackson last year. Canyon has his own faithful following of fans who showed their appreciation for his talents as he set the stage for Keith’s performance. Canyon almost stole the show when he performed Stompin’ Tom Connors classic The Hockey Song while wearing an Abbotsford Heat jersey and video highlights of the local AHL hockey squad scoring, hitting, and fighting played in the background.

Major change for B.C. B.C.’s new premier elect Christy Clark may have given the Liberals a new lease on political life, but how will the leadership change affect the Fraser Valley? Clark is a Vancouver-based premier, as were predecessors Gordon Campbell, Ujjal Dosanjh, Glen Clark and Mike Harcourt. She is likely soon going to be a Vancouver MLA, as it’s expected she will run in Campbell’s Vancouver-Point Grey seat. Her practical knowledge of this area isn’t as strong as is the case with her closest contender for the job, Kevin Falcon, and considerably less than Abbotsford’s Mike de Jong. In her stint as a talk show host, she on occasion showed a startling lack of understanding of the South Fraser area. She defined it, primarily, as just another part of Metro Vancouver, and didn’t seem to understand some of the unique circumstances here. Her learning curve is undoubtedly going to be steep, given that she has an
entire province with which to become familiar. However, her first job is to unite her party. All but one of the six South Fraser Liberal MLAs backed Falcon, who is almost sure to stay in cabinet, likely in a senior position. Finance has been mentioned repeatedly, and there are suggestions he could become the point man for the pro-HST sales force. Expect leadership candidate Mike de Jong to stay as well in a senior post. Clark has suggested she may have a smaller cabinet. She is sure to want some new faces around her as well. Residents will be anxiously waiting to see what Clark says about topics such as the provincial spending, transit expansion, education, and health services. Even though a provincial election is theoretically two years away, there are issues like the HST referendum looming. B.C. residents will be watching her closely. – Black Press

Other Hand Last Thursday morning the mercury was almost in minus double digits, the windchill forcing the felt-temperature into the -20s, and I was standing outside in PJs, rubber moccasins and a jacket over my bathrobe. It wouldn’t have been so bad had I just been doddering to the gate to get the newspaper, but my exposure to the elements was relatively long term, thanks to my new puppy. One of the duties relating to ensuring the hardwood floor remains free of doggie detritus is that, immediately after his breakfast, pup must be taken outside. Unfortunately, a puppy’s desire to play overrules the calls of nature for an interminably long stretch, and to ensure the duties are done, I’m required to stand outside in weather cold enough to freeze appendages off a brass monkey. Lesson learned, the next day long
johns went under the PJs and snow boots clad the feet while enduring another lengthy wait. It is surprising the joy felt when the dog finally squats, enabling a return to the warmth of the house and cup of hot coffee. So, Saturday evening as I sat by the fire watching TV, I could empathize with most MLAs and cabinet ministers as they felt a distinct chill run through the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre when the numbers eliminated their potential benefactors in favour of Christy Clark. Like Iraq a few years ago, shock and awe were the order of the evening as Clark one by one knocked off the opposition to become the (designated) next premier of British Columbia. Yet, they shouldn’t have been surprised. After all, throughout the run-up to the leadership contest, there were always women’s names touted as the favoured candidate – Christy, Carole Taylor, Diane Watts. The people wanted change, and they got it. That Christy ran a very smart campaign didn’t hurt, and her team targeted all those ‘little’ ridings in the north and
interior, winning them against the mass sign-ups that dominated the urban ridings, thanks to the weighted vote system. I’m not so sure that system is fair … why should a district that has many people be out-voted by a handful in some rural backwater?
Shock and awe were the order of the evening as Clark one by one knocked off the opposition. However, that is what the BC Liberals chose to do, and despite the ‘fairness’ or lack thereof, it was clear during the entire leadership race that the majority of British Columbians wanted a ‘new’ face in the premier’s chair, and they got one with Christy. That, I am certain, has created a great deal of anguish among current cabinet ministers who thought by aligning with one of the others, they’d keep their jobs.
With a new sheriff in town, everything is now up for grabs, and if I were Christy I’d reduce the size of cabinet by at least half a dozen, and dropkick some of the deadwood who have recently sat around the table of power. That would not only make government more efficient (and smarter) it would reduce costs – and that always looks good. Interestingly, only one lowly and largely unknown backbencher – Harry Bloy – had the smarts or strength of character to support Christy from the outset. He will likely get a reward, such as being named to the prestigious position of Speaker. Harry gets his elevation, and Christy gets to keep him out of cabinet. As for all the others (with the exception of those who sought the leadership job and will without a doubt join Ms. Clark on the executive council), I can guarantee they are feeling the chill I had while waiting for the pup. Some will get to return to the warmth of power, some (perhaps deservedly) will remain outside in the cold, reflecting on their future. markrushton@abbynews.com

Art belongs in a gallery, not on a road
I have read and heard many comments regarding the city’s art initiative. The city is not on the right track and I would say it’s off the rails. Why are we spending my money on art? I’m still wondering what theory of traffic modelling asks for distracting pieces of art be placed strategically to pull your eyes off the road? The art piece says to people, you are here! So do the traffic signs.
Location, location
going broke in the United States due to the current economy, and due to money mismanagement. The city continually raises our taxes to pay for infrastructure, but turns around and spends money irresponsibly. How long can we sustain frivilous projects before we start to run out of revenue streams? What are the ongoing maintenance costs of this and other art projects?
Kid-Friendly Place
Treat officials with respect “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This is a statement made by one of the presenters who spoke at the “proposed local school calendar consultation process” at the school board meeting of Feb. 21. There were several delegations who presented their thoughts and views. I was embarrassed to be part of the gallery in the way the delegations treated our elected trustees. Most of the presentations were very vitriolic and disrespectful. I think back to 2010 when a survey was sent to parents regarding the possibility of changing the school calender, requesting their input. To my recollection there were a very small percentage of the surveys returned. Since there was so little interest
shown, the board moved ahead on the basis of what they thought was best for the students. The straw hit the fan. It appears the board has gone back to the consultation process. I feel that the trustees are entitled to an apology. Is education not a team effort between students, parents, teachers, administration and elected trustees? If a student wants to learn, supported by parents, taught by caring, hard-working teachers, supported by caring support staff and community, would not positive results be realized? For the sake of our children, please work as a team. Please treat our elected officials with respect. Eric Myrholm
It’s time Abbotsford stopped thinking that art will draw tourists, and support expansion. A clean and safe city that is fiscally responsible is what attracts people to a community to stay, not a cartoon bench or metal artwork. The art is a very nice piece of work, but belongs in a gallery or private residence, not on a road. Kim Dodd

I don’t believe there is any real concern about the art work, maybe a little on the cost. For art work to be appreciated it has to be looked at and studied. This cannot be done in the middle of a round-about. Better to have been placed at the south side of Mill Lake Park on Bevan. Location, location, location. G. Cox
How many tourists have been attracted to Abbotsford and how much revenue has the uncomfortable art benches downtown made for the City of Abbotsford over the years? We save $700,000 on FRVD participation, but spend $64,000 on a piece of art, and according to this article, it’s just the beginning, and we need several pieces to tell Abbotsford’s story. There are many large cities and states

So, the recent News article would characterize non-supporters of the new public art policy as unsupportive of arts altogether. Making that connection is beyond my limited intelligence, but I am left wondering how I might view this new art; are those individuals quoted suggesting I stop my car in the roundabout to facilitate gazing, or do I park and wander into the center to ruminate there? Driving safely negates admiring my new tax expenditure, thus I’m an art ignoramus? And my time and the environment do not benefit when I must travel to different locales to view individual examples of art (resulting in art unseen). Isn’t that the

purpose of art galleries and collections? Renaming the art policy as a “fee” instead of as a “tax” would resolve the issues, according to one of the interviewees. It’s sad when an art advocate parrots city hall in assuming we are that stupid. I do want – and am willing to pay for – more art in this community, if the city would just give my poor wallet a break. Say! Could that be a factor influencing the discontent at large? Funny how it is so crucial to further pillage a beleaguered public purse while ignoring the city hall escapades that drain cultural potential. Laurie Hoekstra

The Kiwanis Key Club staged a community volleyball tournament at Robert Bateman Secondary School on the weekend to raise money for SIGN (Surgical Implant Generation Network). This Kiwanis International initiative will fund 100 or more orthopedic surgery centres in hospitals in developing countries around the world. Each centre will treat a minimum of 100 severely injured family wage-earners and principal caregivers – at no cost to the recipients. “At a cost of $15,000 per centre, the 14 surgery centres so far established through the contributions of PNW clubs and Kiwanians, and the 86 more toward which we are working, will impact 10,000 persons per year,” said Steve Carlton, president of Clearbrook Kiwanis Club. “Though 10,000 persons healed per year represents a small fraction of the annual 20 million severely traumatized persons throughout the developing countries of the world, we view our effort as a start that may ultimately be adopted by Kiwanians and other humanitarians everywhere. “We will raise over $2,500 at these volleyball tournaments, thanks to all the efforts from the Bateman Youth Key Club volunteers. More kids will walk in Africa,” said Carlton.

Huge playoff upset for UFV Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
In the wake of his team’s stunning playoff upset of the Winnipeg Wesmen, University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball coach Al Tuchscherer was having a hard time coming to grips with his program’s new reality.
“I’m not even sure I’ve completely wrapped my head around it,” Tuchscherer told The News on Monday morning, after his team swept a best-of-three weekend series against the heavily favoured Wesmen. “We’re a young team, but the girls have really matured. They’ve taken their
game to another level.” The Wesmen, ranked No. 9 nationally, finished second in Canada West with a 20-4 record. But the Cascades, seventh in the conference at 12-12 in the regular season, executed the game plan to
perfection, winning 77-63 on Friday and 77-64 on Saturday. Rookie centre Sarah Wierks had a huge weekend for the Cascades, going for double-doubles both nights – 18 points and 16 rebounds Friday, and 10 points and
13 boards Saturday. Aieisha Luyken tied Wierks for team-high scoring honours in Game 1, while Tessa Klassen’s 19 points paced the Cascades in Saturday’s clincher. Up next for UFV is the Canada West Final Four in Saskatoon this weekend, and regardless of where they fin-

The provincial title that the Rick Hansen Hurricanes boys wrestling team won on Saturday confirmed the old adage that there’s strength in numbers. Individually, the Hurricanes placed just one wrestler – senior standout Jasmit Phulka – on the top step of the podium at high school provincials, which were held in Abbotsford at the Ag-Rec Centre. It was a testament to Hansen’s depth that they still cruised to the boys aggregate title, out-pointing Alberi District Secondary 67-58. “People always think wrestling is an individual sport, right?” Phulka mused afterward. “But if your team wins the championship, it’s even better, because you know everyone worked together and did it.” The Hurricanes had seven wrestlers advance at least as far as the semifinals. Phulka’s cousin Jobanjit won silver at 74 kg, while Maneet Klair (48 kg), Ranjot Sandher (60 kg) and Ravneet Sandhu (110 kg) took bronze. Fourth-place finishers Manvir Gill (78 kg) and Gulraj Binning (110 kg) also picked up pivotal points for Hansen.

Jasmit Phulka (in red) spearheaded Hansen’s team title, beating Esquimalt’s Dan Lebreton in the 78 kg final. The Hurricanes’ success was only the beginning of a banner day for Abbotsford wrestlers. Manny Gill of Abby Collegiate and Sunny Dhinsa of W.J. Mouat turned in two of the more dominant performances, winning gold at 70 kg and 130 kg, respectively. Both athletes wrapped up a third consecutive high school title in blink-and-you’ll-missit fashion – Gill pinned his opponent 21 seconds into the first round, while Dhinsa needed just 39 seconds to get the pin. The Yale Lions had a huge day, coming away with three gold medals and a silver.
Serena Kind (60 kg) and Zandri Botha (69 kg) won on the girls’ side, while Brendan Seppala (gold, 57 kg) and Matt Dignan (silver, 51 kg) also climbed the podium. Mouat’s Amrit Benning won his first B.C. title at 48 kg, while teammates Melissa Lokombo (silver, 75 kg), Austin Batra (bronze, 70 kg) and Amrit Sund (bronze, 54 kg) rounded out the Hawks’ medallists. MEI had a pair of silver medallists in Aman Kaler (57 kg) and Dave Sharma (41 kg). For more in-depth coverage of wrestling provincials, visit abbynews.com
Heading into the Fraser Valley AAA basketball tournament, everyone knew the W.J. Mouat Hawks senior girls squad had a ton of talent. If Saturday’s 78-63 victory over the Brookswood Bobcats in the Valley title game is any indication, B.C.’s top-ranked team also has plenty of mental fortitude. With 4:58 remaining in the fourth quarter and Mouat leading 65-58, Hawks standout forward Katie Brink picked up her fifth and disqualifying foul. No matter – her team responded with an impressive 8-0 run to seal the win. “When Katie fouled out, we all huddled up and said, ‘We need to finish this,’” said Kayli Sartori, who earned tournament MVP honours after scoring a game-high 24 points in the final. “It just got us more pumped.” The victory marked the Continued on A14

The Abbotsford Heat cringed their way through a horror movie on Saturday morning, and it lit the fuse for their highest offensive output of the season on Saturday evening. To be clear, Jim Playfair’s bunch didn’t screen anything starring Freddy Krueger or Chucky. They merely watched game tape from Friday’s unsightly 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Providence Bruins, which was at least as disturbing. The Heat, sufficiently chastened, raced out to a 5-0 lead over those same Bruins on Saturday, en route to a 6-2 victory at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. “Jim was very thorough with the mistakes

Icebreakers giving Pilots fits in playoffs The Mission Icebreakers are proving to be a pesky first-round foe for the Abbotsford Pilots. The division champion Pilots won the first two games of the best-of-seven Pacific International Junior Hockey League series, but the fourthplace Icebreakers clawed back to even the series with a pair of weekend victories. The Icebreakers doubled up on the Pilots in Game 3 at MSA Arena on Friday, winning 4-2. Matthew Genovese, Daniel Higgs, Mattias Schmitt and Luke Venema tallied for Mission, while Jarrett Martin and Kevin Lourens replied for Abby. On Sunday, Sean Pesut’s goal at 4:14 of overtime lifted the Icebreakers to a 3-2 victory at Mission Leisure Centre. The Pilots had forced OT on Daniel Amesbury’s power-play goal at 14:44 of the third period. Game 5 goes tonight at 7 p.m. at MSA Arena, with Game 6 set for Thursday at 8 p.m. in Mission. Game 7, if necessary, would run Friday at MSA Arena at 7:30 p.m.
Knights girls dominate Valley tourney From A12
Hawks’ first Valley title since 1995, and more than likely gives them the top seed at AAA provincials, which runs March 9-12 at North Vancouver’s Capilano University. In addition to Sartori’s MVP award, Brink was named a first team all-star and Ashleyn Sarowa was a second-teamer. the Fraser Valley playoffs. They won the Single A title, beating Unity Christian 99-45 in the final. “We had a very specific plan about how we were going to handle certain situations, and they executed to the nines,” Knights coach Mark Veerman said. “I love where we are right now (as a team). Q Other local Fraser Valley basketball medallists, as of Monday’s press deadline, included the Mouat junior boys (silver), the MEI senior girls (bronze in AA), and the Mouat Grade 9 boys (bronze).

New Chevrolet Cruze Eco achieves Best-in-Class 4.6 L/100km efficiency on the highway “The AJAC award-winning Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features, upscale amenities – as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” said Marc Comeau, vice president of marketing for Chevrolet in Canada. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in an affordable compact car.” To achieve its segmentleading highway fuel efficiency, Cruze’s engineers focused on aerodynamic performance, mass optimization and powertrain enhancements. The refinements in each area paid big dividends towards the car’s overall efficiency, while providing engineers with valuable information to help enhance the efficiency of future Chevrolet models. Aerodynamic improvements over nonEco manual-transmission models reduced the highway fuel consumption rating by 0.8L/100km to 4.6L/100km. Many were developed and refined in more than 500 hours of wind-tunnel testing of the Chevy Volt, which shares a core architecture with the Cruze. Examples include the upper grille, which has more “closeouts” to improve aerodynamics, a lower front air dam extension, a rear spoiler, a lowered ride height and underbody panels that smooth airflow beneath the car. The Eco model also features an allnew technology in the compact segment: a lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow. Another contributor to reduced drag is the use of ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires (used with lightweight
EMPLOYEE PROFILE
wheels), which are also used on the Volt. As a result of the aero enhancements, aerodynamic drag was reduced by 10 percent over a non-Eco model, with a coefficient of drag of 0.298. That places Cruze at the top of the class for mainstream compact cars. More than 42 changes were made on the Eco to reduce weight. It weighs in at 1,365 kg (3,009 lbs), compared to the 1,462 kg (3,223 lbs) of the Cruze LT Turbo. The diet program for the Cruze challenged engineers to look at all aspects of the vehicle’s construction, including hundreds of weld flanges on the vehicle. They were reduced 1 mm to 2 mm in length, which saved several pounds, while the sheet metal gauge thickness was reduced by about 0.1 mm in select components. This saved weight while preserving structural integrity. Lighter wheels and tires are used on the Eco. They’re stylish, polished 17-inch alloy units with Goodyear tires that weigh only 16.6 kg (36.5 lbs) apiece. That’s 2.4 kilos (5.3 lbs) less than the 16inch wheel/tires of the Cruze LT Turbo for a complete savings to the vehicle of 9.6 kg (21.2 lbs). Cruze Eco is powered by power-dense Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission. The transmission’s gearing is optimized for the model’s specific 17-inch wheel/ tire combination and includes aggressive ratios for first and second gear coupled with a highly efficient, “taller” sixth-gear ratio for highway driving. That means engine rpm is reduced on the highway, which in turn reduces fuel consumption. A six-speed automatic transmission is available, with NRCan fuel consumption ratings of 7.8 L/100km city and 5.1 L/100km highway.

Gallery 7 stages classic Amish story
A
story revolving around war, faith and forgiveness takes centre stage this week at Gallery 7 Theatre. The company is performing Anne Chislett’s drama Quiet in the Land, a play they produced 10 years ago with great success. “This year being our 20th anniversary, I thought it only fitting that we go back to our roots as a theatre and re-mount this play with a refreshed look and vision,” said artistic director Ken Hildebrandt. “I’m curious to see how the production speaks to our current world and cultural realities.” A prodigal son story set in a Canadian Amish community during the First World War, Quiet in the Land explores the complexities of tradition and faith in a changing world. Yock Bauman can’t comprehend how his strict father can stand idly by while war rages in Europe. Shunning the pacifist beliefs of his community, Yock enlists in the military where he soon becomes a hero to the nation, but an outcast to his own community. Having been powerfully affected by the horrors of battle, Yock returns home to find he has lost more than he could ever have imagined. “Though much has changed in the past 10 years, a lot hasn’t,” said Hildebrandt. “We still deal with war, relationships, faith, traditions and all those universal things that make up the human experience. It’ll be interesting to see what new truths this re-envisioned production brings to the surface.” The cast of Quiet in the Land is made up of performers from throughout the Fraser Valley, including Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack. Edmonton rockers The Stereos bring their Uncontrollable tour to Abbotsford on April 3.
Stereos add local tour stop The Stereos will perform at the Abbotsford Arts Centre on April 3 with special guests Neverest. The Juno nominated band features frontman Miles Holmwood, Pat Kordyback (vocals), Daniel Johnson (bass), Robb Chalifoux (rhythm guitar) and Aaron Verdonk (drums). The Edmonton rockers got their big break in 2009 after appearing on an episode of MuchMusic’s disBand. Shortly after performing on the show the group signed with Universal Music Canada.
The Stereos released their self-titled debut album in October 2009 with Juno winning producer Gavin Brown, who’s worked with bands like Three Days Grace and Billy Talent. The group’s first single, Summer Girl, debuted at No. 2 on the Canadian Hot 100 and the album was later certified gold. Their sophomore album Uncontrollable maintains the band’s signature catchy lyrics and beats, while driving heavier bass lines and added synths for an overall popinfused dance sound.
Neverest joins the cross-Canada tour this year and offers a blend of hard rock infused pop. The band teamed up with internationally acclaimed producer Anthony M. Jones for its first single About Us, which hit airwaves in October. Neverest will release its debut EP on March 29. Tickets to the Abbotsford show are $25 from www.ticketweb.ca. The concert starts at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. The Abbotsford Arts Centre is located at 2329 Crescent Way.

Cadets right on target
SUBMITTED PHOTO
The air cadet biathlon team includes Ben Curry, left, P. Jarod Algra, Carl Taylor, Andy Lee, Emilio Nicolato, Nicole Kim, Jen Kim, and Ji Sup Kim.
The air cadets of Abbotsford 861 Silverfox Squadron once again have a team competing in cadet biathlon competition, which combines crosscountry skiing and rifle target shooting. Eight cadets went to the zone championships on Jan. 8 at Callaghan Valley in Whistler, and three more put in a solid showing at the provincial championships. Biathlon has traditionally been one of the most popular activities in which sea, army and air cadets
participate. The aim of the competitions is to identify the best biathletes in the Pacific Region. All team members of the local squadron placed in the top seven in Whistler, with Jarod Algra placing first in the junior male category and Ji Sup Kim placing first in the senior male class. Both of them, along
with Ben Curry, competed at the provincials in Mount Washington, B.C., on Feb. 5. Curry took fourth in his class, Kim seventh, and a flu-ridden Algra was 10th. The aim of the Air Cadet movement is to develop in youth ages 12-18 the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, to promote physical fitness, and to
stimulate interest in the aviation and aerospace industries while having fun, building lasting friendships and earning high school credits. Members of the 861 Squadron meet every Wednesday night at the Air Cadet building in Abbotsford. For more information, you can call 604852-5755.

It’s like a book club, but just a whole lot bigger. The University of the Fraser Valley is inviting local residents to participate in a community-wide book reading of Dahanu Road that will culminate with a visit from the author Anosh Irani at the end of March. encourage as many people as possible to read the book between now and March 29 — when the Ehsaas Readers’ and Writers’ Festival takes place. “We would like to invite everybody to read Anosh Irani’s evocative book Dahanu Road and join us in this thought-provoking winter journey,” said Sandhra. “Then, when Irani visits UFV in March we would encourage people to come and engage in a reading and discussion with him.” Dahanu Road is the story of
Zairos — the son of a wealthy landowner and his own voyage of discovery. The story combines the tales of family generations and weaves love, betrayal, suicide, hatred, and reckoning in its pages. Dahanu is a town just outside of Bombay and Zairos learns from his grandfather about his family history and the tragic story of bloodshed on the land that Zairos will eventually inherit. Author speaks to readers March 29 From B10
about sharing the story of the novel, explains Sandhra. She loves the idea of people following the story of Zairos and discussing the adventure as the pages are turned. On March 29, Irani will visit UFV and read from his book as part of the Ehsaas Readers’ and Writers’ festival. Other writers taking part in the festival are Tariq Malik and Gurjinder Basran. “Book lovers from all UFV campuses and the general community are encouraged to participate by reading the book and then joining us in March for the reading,” Sandhra added. The book can be purchased at UFV’s bookstore. The Ehsaas Readers’ and Writers’
Festival is presented by the Centre for Indo Canadian Studies in collaboration with the UFV’s English department. Irani will read from Dahanu Road at a special presentation on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. in the lecture theatre (room B101) in the Abbotsford campus. The reading will be followed by book signings and the opportunity to meet the participating authors. The Readers’ and Writers’ Festival is part of the year-long celebrations honouring the Centennial year of the building of the National Historic Site Gur Sikh Temple in Abbotsford that was established in 1911.
