One of the shots fired at an Abbotsford woman as she pulled into the driveway of her home Tuesday night narrowly missed her head, according to Abbotsford Police. Const. Ian MacDonald said the woman is lucky to be uninjured after “eight to 12 rounds” were fired at her vehicle and at the home in the 2500 block of Bradner Road. Police believe the shooting was targeted. He said several people who were in the two-storey house also were not injured, although one shot went through the living room window and another entered the foyer. The shooting occurred at about 10 p.m. just as the woman, who was driving a GMC Sierra pickup, was returning home. A vehicle followed her into the driveway, and an occupant from the car opened fire. MacDonald said the first shot blew out the back window of the pickup, and another narrowly missed the driver’s head. The woman ran from the vehicle and into the home, and the other car fled. “She can’t clearly remember whether she was exiting the vehicle while the shots were still ringing out,” MacDonald said.

Up to a dozen rounds were fired at a woman in a truck are she pulled into the driveway of this home on Tuesday night. It’s also unclear as to how many people were in the suspect car, nor is there a precise description of the vehicle, although it is believed to be a newer model dark-coloured sedan. MacDonald said the rural home and two of its occupants are well known to police. He said a 27-year-old male resident has had about “130 interactions” with police, while a 21-year-old man has had about 40 encounters. Police, including the gang suppression unit (GSU), are continuing to
investigate. MacDonald said the GSU has had great success in disrupting gang- and drug-related violence in Abbotsford, especially in the latter part of 2010, but criminal activity can be volatile and unpredictable. “Bad guys will be motivated by money and will often resort to violence,” he said. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has created a mock “mature driver” sign in response to recent statistics on the number of vehiclerelated deaths in the city. Const. Ian MacDonald said that over the last two years, 22 people have died as a result of collisions. The average age of the drivers involved was 40. “Not a single teenager was either a driver or a casualty in any of these incidents,” MacDonald said. He said the mock sign – similar to the “L” or “N” designations for learning and new drivers – was created to highlight the fact that all motorists need to be attentive and drive
safely and responsibly. MacDonald said more experienced motorists might tend to be overly confident about their driving abilities and become complacent on the road. Newer drivers, on the other hand, might be more cautious. He said the sign is not designed to be a “panacea” for the issue. “We hope it starts discussions and gets people to think.” The sign is surrounded by a summary of the 2009-10 fatal collisions. Also in response, MacDonald said the APD’s four patrol shifts will step up enforcement at crosswalks and intersections. Pedestrians and drivers alike will be ticketed for any offences.

Among nation’s best Rob Comeau loves his job Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Rob Comeau describes himself as a “farm boy from Alberta,” but now he has a more official title to add to his personal history. Comeau is one of four school principals in B.C. – and 32 in the nation – to be named Canada’s Outstanding Principals by The Learning Partnership, a Toronto-based charitable organization that offers programs such as Take Our Kids to Work. Comeau has been principal of W. J. Mouat Secondary in Abbotsford for the last six years. He said he was “just thrilled” to learn of the honour for which he was nominated by colleagues. He credited staff, students and parents with making the high school a success over the years. “This is a wonderful school, and it’s just a pleasure to be part of the special things that happen here.” Comeau has spent his entire educational career at W. J. Mouat, starting as a biology teacher in 1987. He was then

He said he has felt honoured to be involved with the innovative programs that have developed at the school over the years. This includes the virtual school which began at Mouat, and expanded district-wide, and a program that retrains ESL adults for the workplace. Comeau said he believes
strongly in the school’s motto: “Success for all.” “Everyone here has a shared vision to be successful ... The staff really go the extra mile for the kids.” The nomination package for Comeau included 25 supporting letters from staff, students, parents, school district colleagues and others. Ruth Merrick, a counsellor at
the school and one of the people who spurred the nomination, said “there is no one more deserving” of the award. “... Rob has the skill and insight to support us with whatever we need to reach our potential, students and staff alike, and senses when to get out of our way so we can grow and shine,” she said. “Rob provides the tools, the mentoring, the encouragement and the direction – and then truly seems to reap great personal rewards from our successes.” School district superintendent Julie MacRae said Comeau is known and respected for “excellent leadership, innovative administration and placing the needs of students and employees under his supervision before all else.” The winning principals attend an executive leadership training program from Feb. 6 to 10 at the University of Toronto’s Joseph L. Rutman School of Management. They will be formally honoured on Feb. 8 at a gala awards celebration in Toronto. Comeau, who is married with five children aged seven to 21, said he looks forward to spending many more years at Mouat Secondary. “I think it’s one of the best places to be in the world,” he said.

The wreath, which also has a green bulb for every day without a residential fire, is a visual fire safety reminder to those driving past the firehall on George Ferguson Way. In December 2010 there was only $72,000 in fire losses, compared with $432,000 from seven fires during the same month in 2009. The most serious damage last month was an estimated $40,000 from a garage fire, which was caused by an electrical wiring fault.

GAS RATES DROP Falling natural gas prices should save the typical gas-heated household $66 next year, according to Terasen Gas. Bills are projected to total $1,009 annually, down more than six per cent from $1,075 in 2010. Lower rates for natural gas were approved this month by the B.C. Utilities Commission and took effect Jan. 1. The price drop is due to a glut of natural gas on the market, continued strong production and lower than expected demand. Terasen passes on the commodity cost of the gas without markup, instead earning its profit on the separate delivery charges to transport it.

A request by the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board for easier access to information on grow ops has been rejected by the city. The board wants one city staff member, authorized to give yes or no answers, to be the point of contact for inquiries. It noted the knowledge is needed to help avoid health or safety concerns, usually caused by hidden mold growing in the former drug home, for potential buyers. However, the city maintains the information is already available. Staff indicated more than 700 information requests related to drug homes have been responded to since 2006, often in the same business day. The city also places Section 57 notices on homes that have been used to manufacture drugs. Under Section 57 of the Community Charter, municipalities can file a public notice in the land title office regarding safety concerns to structure. Finally, city solicitors feel implementing the board’s request would contravene provincial legislation. “All the information is there for them (realtors), but they have to do the work to find it. We can’t just hand it to them,” said Mayor George Peary. He said it would be easy enough for someone from the real estate board to look at the council agendas and see what properties have been identified. The City of Langley has taken a position similar to Abbotsford’s.

Spot has a story to tell Pooch rescued from Vedder Canal
Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Spot is a city dog without much inclination for adventure, according to those who know him. But the eight-yearold mixed Labrador from Vancouver had an experience to rival the popular children’s tale The Incredible Journey in mid-December. Spot was staying in Abbotsford with Shirley Tam, the sister of his owner, Kit, who had gone on a Mexican vacation with her husband. Shirley and her husband, Stan, live on five acres on Sumas Mountain – the ideal spot for a pooch to exercise his freedom. But Spot isn’t like that. He has stayed with the Tams many times. Rather than frolic in the wilderness for long periods, he sticks close to the house and pleads to come back inside within about 30 minutes of being let out. On the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 14, Spot didn’t come running when Shirley called him. A search of the property turned up no sign of the white dog with the partially black head.
Several hours later, he still hadn’t returned. There had been snow that day, and Shirley and Stan were worried. Shirley phoned neighbours, the local pound, the SPCA and the closest vet clinic. She also notified her sister, who had returned from Mexico and was due to pick up Spot the following day. The next morning, Shirley knocked on neighbours’ doors and showed them a picture of Spot. Somebody said he had seen a white dog walking along Sumas Mountain Road. The Tams concluded that Spot must have escaped from their fenced property when Stan was leaving for work. Shirley emailed and called more vet clinics, thinking that perhaps Spot had become ill or had been injured and someone had taken him in. On Thursday, Dec. 16, Shirley got a call from her sister. Spot, who had a tattoo to trace him back to his owners, was safe and sound at the Chilliwack Animal Control shelter. He had been found the previous afternoon, just before dusk. A man had been
Spot had a harrowing adventure while staying in Abbotsford. fishing at the Vedder Canal – about 30 kilometres away – when he saw Spot on a rock face, wanting to cross the water. The currents were strong, so he yelled at the dog to stay. The pooch obeyed. The man then called Chilliwack Animal Control. Supervisor Trina Douglas and
her co-worker Darren arrived at the scene, and realized there was no way to get to the shaking dog. They phoned around for a boat, but no one was available. But a boat was coming in from the canal, and Darren flagged it down, pointing at the stranded dog. At first, Spot refused to get
in the vessel, but he obliged once the driver went back to the shore and returned with Darren, who has a way with animals. Spot was relieved to be back on stable ground. “He was happy. A little bit scared, but happy,” Douglas said. The muddy dog was otherwise in good condition, and was brought to the animal shelter for a muchwanted meal and a good night’s sleep before being reunited with his family the next day. His first stop after Kit picked him up was at Shirley’s house, where she had a meal of ground beef, vegetables and rice waiting for him. Shirley had been perplexed about what had led Spot to venture towards Chilliwack, rather than his home in Vancouver. Kit had the answer: Spot was born in Chilliwack and was sent from the shelter there to one in Vancouver for adoption when he was a few months old. “So, Spot maybe instinctively went to his birthplace. If only dogs could talk,” Shirley said.

Reading Problems – The Solution “Right now in British Columbia one out of five Grade 4 students don’t read, write or have the math skills at a Grade 4 level.” – Premier Gordon Campbell, Oct. 27, 2010
Twenty percent of children cannot learn to read and write by the methods used in B.C. schools. Their reading problems are caused by phonological processing deficits that can only be trained with special technologies. One to two years in reading skills are gained in 8-12 weeks. As seen on The Nature of Things, Scientific Learning’s Fast ForWord programs train phonological processing so the child can process the sounds within words and learn to read. These programs are now available in Langley and Abbotsford for just $29 per session.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS - Thursday, January 6, 2011
Impact of care fee hike January could be bleak for seniors living in publicly funded care homes, most of whom will be paying significantly more for care this year than they did two years ago. A senior with income of $22,000, for example, will pay an extra $1,956 in 2011 compared to 2009, while others will pay much more because 80 per cent of their after-tax income will go to pay for care. This policy will have a harsher effect on dependent spouses, who have always relied on their partner’s pension. They will find it particularly hard to pay the higher fees and still cover the costs of medicine, dental care and add-on care home services such as television and the telephone, because the family’s income will be significantly reduced under the 80 per cent rule. These are the woman from traditional families who chose not to work during their childbearing years and have limited access to Canada Pension Plan or private pensions. They can apply for reduced rates on the basis of hardship but this may be a drastic step for some and they may not even
qualify without depleting their assets. For these families, selling the family home or tapping the incomes of sons and daughters may be the only way they can make ends meet. At first glance, it appears the government did everything it could to make the new fee structure more equitable for British Columbians. It lowered the fees for 25 per cent of seniors, split the rate increase over two years to make it easier for people to adjust; and public care still costs half of what it costs in private facilities. With the greying of the baby boomer population, it makes sense to make seniors pay more for the care they receive, because even at the maximum monthly rate of $2,932, they still pay less than half of what it costs for 24-hour nursing care in a public care home. But for a vast majority of seniors, this policy appears to have some unintended consequences and they face some serious belt-tightening in 2011. – Black Press
Campbell’s legacy mostly positive Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views Premier Gordon Campbell has a standard joke when asked about fixed election dates. You mean set election dates, he says with a smile. “If we had fixed elections, there would be no problem.” As Campbell prepares to leave office after 17 years as B.C. Liberal leader and nearly a decade as premier, Canada’s first legislated schedule for elections is one of the significant achievements that I hope will endure. Another one is the carbon tax. Leadership hopeful Kevin Falcon has already suggested that the carbon tax on fossil fuels be frozen when the currently legislated schedule of increases runs out in 2012. Currently at 4.45 cents on a litre of gasoline, it goes to 5.56 cents next July and 6.67 cents a year later. The tax applies to all carbon-emitting fuels, including coal, shredded tires and even peat moss. Offset by income tax
cuts, it is designed as a growing incentive to find low-carbon energy alternatives. It also promotes walkable communities and fitness, which our culture desperately needs. Then there are the income tax cuts. Personal income taxes were cut 25 per cent on Campbell’s first day in office, and B.C.’s small business income tax is on its way to zero. Campbell’s critics predicted the gutting of government programs as a result of these cuts, and they have been proven wrong. Government revenues and spending have continued to grow every year. When the Fraser Institute ranked Campbell first in its recent study of the fiscal performance of Canada’s premiers, it noted that his government held average annual growth of program spending to 4.4 per cent. Even so, the average growth of the B.C. economy was only 4.1 per cent during those years, and as a result government grew from 19.4 per cent of gross domestic product to 21.1 per cent during his term. (Ontario’s Dalton McGuinty finished last, his 7.7 per cent average annual spending increase being three times the rate of provincial economic growth.)
Averaged over the same period, Campbell achieved annual surpluses and reduced debt. Even his opponents credit Campbell with bringing adult supervision to federal-provincial relations, after Glen Clark’s swashbuckling over U.S. submarines using the Nanoose Bay test range. Contrast that with the Pacific Gateway
Campbell’s critics predicted the gutting of government programs as a result of tax cuts, and they have been proven wrong port and road development, trade agreements with Alberta and Saskatchewan, and bridge-building with both Liberal and Conservative federal governments that will probably save his party. Aside from the harmonized sales tax, Campbell’s most controversial recent move is the establishment of the natural
resource operations ministry. If you’ve heard about this at all, it’s likely been inaccurate claims about forest research being abandoned and the like. In fact, this is the kind of regulatory efficiency that a globalized economy demands, and that bureaucracies resist. Natural resource ministries already operate in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ottawa, all in conjunction with separate environment ministries. Similar efforts are in place in California and Oregon. The related legacies of privatization and energy development are also controversial. Setting aside the criminal acts of a couple of ministerial aides, does anyone still believe that any province should own and operate a railway? That it should serve as a costly social program for ranchers, or run empty passenger cars for the sake of nostalgia? Power development, like health care, is too big to be done by the state alone. Both these systems need to get bigger, and the costs are staggering. Finally, there is the HST. It remains to be seen if this policy will survive as a further step in B.C.’s political maturity. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

letters Orthopedic dispute not about money? We, who live in the jurisdiction of the Fraser Health Authority, have a serious problem. Fortunately there is now a solution. At present the orthopedic surgeons associated with the Fraser Health Authority, other than those at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, are on an almost total strike. In the entire region one orthopedic surgeon is on call at any one time. Patients with orthopedic emergencies are transferred to the hospital where the on-call physician is based. Additionally, if life or limb are threatened, then a local orthopedic physician elsewhere will respond to the emergency. The dispute can be summarized as follows. In the past, an on-call orthopedic surgeon was categorized as a Level 1 availability situation. The physician was required to be on site within 45
minutes and was paid $616. Last April, as an economy measure, Fraser Health downgraded orthopedic on-call availability to a Level 2 category, which meant that the orthopedic surgeon was required to arrive within two hours and was paid $452. This change greatly upset members of the B.C. Orthopaedic Association. Dr. David Wickham, speaking for the association, said Fraser Health is “lowering the standard of care.” He makes a valid point. Here’s my solution. Dr. Wickham assures us that “the issue is not about money.” Great, we can now show how the job action can be ended forthwith. The arrangement which requires orthopedic surgeons to be on site within 45 minutes is immediately restored. Given Dr. Wickham’s assurance that “the issue is not about money,” the orthopedic surgeons agree to a policy
which requires them to arrive on site within 45 minutes and be paid $452. They willingly do their part to address the financial crunch. Everyone wins. The patients win in that the high level of service, the 45-minute response time, is reinstated. The orthopedic surgeons win in that they can return to work and earn a living as they give selflessly of themselves in medical service. The Fraser Health Authority wins in that the annual saving of about $60,000 at each hospital is achieved. This solution to the dispute could be achieved only because of the impressive magnanimity of the orthopedic surgeons. Their willingness to accept the 45-minute response rule with a reduction of compensation deserves our highest commendation. Thank you orthopedic surgeons! John H. Redekop
Where is the support for education?
I think the government should help support all students financially. In a time where most of us are unemployed or underemployed (some training and education but no jobs available), what else is there to do but go back to school? Everyone should be encouraged to get more education. I am a newlywed. Before I got married, I took a college course to find a decent paying job. Luckily at the time I had a family member who was willing to help me one time financially. After graduating and going out to the job mar-
ket there wasn’t much out there. Most places were word of mouth hiring or were not very nice places to work at. So, after two years of working retail and getting hitched, I decided I’m now married and should be able to go back to school. So, like most, I decided to get a student loan, because I now have a mortgage and a husband to feed. Sadly, because I am married and my husband owns his vehicle I don’t qualify for a government student loan. Apparently you are supposed to be broke and not own a thing to get one. I
don’t get how anyone is ever supposed to pay that back then. I started to ask around and it seemed that most people I knew had the same experience. In 2010, the Olympics were held in Vancouver and close to $900 million was spent. Many people were not happy with the Olympics at all. They were very dissatisfied with the opening ceremonies and several things did not even work out as planned. Now why can’t some of those hundreds of millions of dollars go to help students in Canada? I was able to take two courses this year and charge them.
My plan was to do the same for 2011. But now somehow it has been approved that you can no longer charge your classes as of Jan. 1, 2011. And you are charged over $200 in extra fees for a radio station and an U-pass, which I will never use. Can I not get a break? Now I am forced to not be a student, and wait till I can save up to pay for a class in full, and UFV only gives you two weeks to pay it. Where is the support from universities and the government to help people get educated?

sel sees will vary, but Snowdon said they “tend to be busy.” She said the lawyers on the Abbotsford roster have agreed to not be available for duty counsel through January. They will still take on legal aid cases. “This is one way to draw attention to the chronic underfunding of legal aid,” she said. “We feel we are unable to represent our clients properly. We do what we can.” She was “very disappointed” that the law firm MBDG (McCullough, Blazina, Dieno and Gustafson) was going to be “scabbing” in Abbotsford. Snowdon said a strong legal system is like a three-legged stool. One leg is a well-funded Crown prosecution, another is an independent judiciary, and the third is a well-funded defence. For those who don’t have a high income, the defence can be lacking, she said. “It has become a broken system.” Snowdon said the same frustration is felt by legal aid lawyers across the Lower Mainland, but job action is starting in Abbotsford because it involves a comparatively small group of attorneys to organize. “It’s a pretty unified bar,” she said. “We’re hoping what we do catches on, and lawyers in other jurisdictions join us.” Snowdon said the Abbotsford lawyers intend to continue to take some form of job action until legal aid tariffs increase. Mark Benton, execu-
tive director of the Legal Services Society, conceded the society faces severe budgetary constraints. “Our ability to continue to operate the legal aid program is stretched to the limit.” He said the society faced “significant cuts” in 2002, and has not received funding to increase the legal aid tariff for lawyers since 1992. At the same time, the province’s population has grown, and inflation has increased costs. Over the past 10 years, the number of lawyers who will take on legal aid cases has been cut in half, and in some communities there are none. “The principal reason for that, and we know because we talk to them, is the amount that it pays,” Benton said. For criminal matters, he said, a legal aid lawyer will generally work for between $84 and $97 per hour, which is onethird of the going rate a lawyer would charge a client with financial means. Benton agreed that a lawyer might end up working on a complex legal aid case for as little as $10 per hour, but added that work on more straightforward cases should allow the lawyer to increase the hourly average. “I understand completely how frustrated this group of lawyers is,” he said. He said the association had to find replacements for the lawyers taking job action. Attorney General Barry Penner could not be reached for comment.

Banner year for Operation Red Nose Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
Operation Red Nose had a particularly merry holiday season in Abbotsford/Mission, with more clients safely delivered home, more volunteer drivers, and more donations to the cause. In 2009, the volunteer service, which takes drivers who have been drinking and their vehicles home safely, offered 569 rides. This year was the best ever, with 842 rides. Correspondingly, donations rose from $9,600 last year to more than $15,000 in the just completed campaign. The increases were made possible by a team of volunteers that was also up by about 50 per cent this year. “There were 121 brand new volunteers to the program, which we thought was remarkable,” said Linda Palm, the manager of Operation Red Nose in Abbotsford/ Mission. She is also the general manager
of Pacific Sport, the beneficiary of Red Nose, and a support to elitelevel athletes in the Fraser Valley. Palm credited media support with the boost in volunteers. “People heard that we needed volunteers, and gave up their time to support us,” she said. Early in December it became apparent that the new drinking and driving penalties, which the provincial government calls the toughest in the country, were creating more demand for Red Nose, and more drivers were needed. For New Year’s Eve there were 84 volunteers, divided into 25 teams of drivers. They offered 153 rides, which was the busiest night ever for Operation Red Nose in Abbotsford/Mission. Q The expanded Operation Red Nose outgrew the community policing office as a base of operations, and Palm is appealing to the business community for a donation of greater space and more phones for next year.

Care home rates climb again for many seniors Second year of fee hikes hit all but poorest Jeff NAGEL Black Press
Most B.C. seniors in nursing homes will be hit with another significant jump in residential care rates in January. T he province announced more than a year ago it would raise the fees by 10 to 13 per cent
for care home residents whose after-tax income is at least $22,000 a year. But the hike was phased in over two years for existing clients, so a senior in care whose monthly rate jumped $81 last January will see another $81 increase starting this month. Someone earning

$22,000 or more will pay an extra $1,956 in 2011 compared to 2009. “I know people who are just shocked, they can hardly find the words to describe what they’re feeling,” B.C. Health Coalition co-chair Alice Edge said. Notices of the latest increase began arriving in early December. The new policy of taking up to 80 per cent of residents’ after-tax income allows for a minimum of $275 per month for spending on incidentals. “We are hearing that’s not enough,” Edge said. “The seniors I’ve talked to are very stressed about these increased rates.” The money left over can disappear quickly to prescription medicine, dental care, other personal care items and add-on services like television and telephone. Even worse, she said, are cases of couples where one spouse is in care and the other is living at home. With fees draining more of the cash of
the spouse in care, the one at home can be pushed to the edge of their ability to maintain the household. “They are experiencing a lot of financial distress around this.” Health minister Colin Hansen said in a statement the new fees are more equitable, lowering the rates for the lowestincome seniors. Someone who makes $14,000 a year now pays $894 per month, about $46 less than in 2009. But only about a quarter of the poorest seniors in care are expected to pay less under the new system. Overall, the fee changes are bringing government an estimated $54 million more per year. “All of the additional revenue is being reinvested in care,” Hansen said. He stressed individuals or couples who feel they cannot make the payments can also apply for reduced rates on the basis of hardship. “No senior will be denied care based on income alone.”

Woman sues for airport fall Vikki HOPES
Abbotsford News
A Coquitlam woman filed a notice of civil claim in B.C. Supreme Court last Friday, seeking damages from the City of Abbotsford, Abbotsford Airport Authority and WestJet Airlines Ltd. Pam Duncan, a claims adjuster, is seeking costs related to ongoing injuries she alleges she suffered after falling on snow and/or ice on the tarmac at Abbotsford International Airport on Jan. 3, 2009. At the time, Duncan was disembarking from a WestJet flight from Calgary to Abbotsford. The claim states that her injuries have included shock,
headaches, low back pain, stress, sleep disruption, softtissue damage, restriction of movement, severe pain, and “recreational interference. “As a result of the negligence of the defendants ... the plaintiff has suffered marked disability and loss of enjoyment of life, and her capacity to enjoy life has been and will be lessened, the court documents state. Duncan was unable to continue working and cannot do many of the household tasks she could previously do, resulting in her having to hire housekeeping services, the claim says. It states that the defendants were negligent because they failed to maintain the tarmac in
a safe condition, did not provide warning of the “hazard on the property, and did not have an adequate plan for the inspection and removal of snow and ice. Duncan will continue to require medical and rehabilitative care now and into the future, the documents state. She is seeking general and special damages, past and future health care costs, and other expenses. Three other defendants in the claim include a security company, which was not named, and two employees who were not identified by name or for which defendant they work. The trial will be held in Vancouver Supreme Court, but a date has not yet been set.

IN CELEBRATION OF OUR
Roadshow appraises antiques Abbotsford residents have an opportunity to have family heirlooms appraised by an antiques expert this month. The process is much like the popular antiques shows on television, said expert Elijah Gold, in which owners are given a detailed history of the items they bring. However, the Canadian Collectors Roadshow will sometimes make a purchase offer. “The difference is we actually decide to buy things from people, should they decide to sell to us,” Gold said. The appraisals are done free of charge. Coins and jewelry are popular items for purchase, but even items such as antique costume jewelry may also be bought. He said the antiques expert has an amazing knowledge of collectables. “He can take everything from a Barbie Doll to a blunderbuss, and tell you all about it,” Gold said. The show will be in Abbotsford, at the Best Western Regency Inn and Conference Centre on Marshall Road, until Saturday, and again from Jan. 12 to 15, open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gold said the Roadshow is planning a thankyou event that will benefit the Abbotsford Hospice Society.

That allowed the Moose to seize the momentum, and they drew even at 9:37 of the final frame. On the rush, Manitoba defenceman Kevin Connauton went to the backhand and roofed the puck over Heat goalie Leland Irving. It is with sadness that we announce the death of our father, Peter Enns, who died peacefully on 29 December 2010 surrounded by his family. Peter was born in Arkadak, South Russia, the second of seven children born to Jacob and Maria (Paetkau) Enns. The family immigrated to Canada in 1926 and settled in Chortitz, Manitoba. This is where Peter helped his father farm. In 1936, he got the urge to leave home and headed to Alberta where he and his friend, Ike Dyke, hoed sugar beets. In the fall of 1936, the two headed to BC via rail in November through Crows’ Nest Pass arriving in Chilliwack to find no snow, but beautiful weather. They made their way to Peter’s grandparents in what, at that time, was known as Sumas, later Greendale. Peter worked odd jobs before he and his two brothers, Dave and John, started a store known as Enns’ Brothers General Store. They opened their store on the 21 of June 1947 only to be flooded out on 1 June, 1948. They rebuilt and soon the two brothers departed and Peter became the sole owner. He operated the store for 30 years selling in 1977. After which he and his son Ernie went into the sausage (Valley Maid) business for 10 years before Peter retired. In 1999 Peter and Susan moved to Menno Terrace in Abbotsford. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Maria, brothers Jake, Abe, Dave and John as well as sister Mary; also one greatgrandchild Joshua Enns. He is survived by his wife, Susan, of 69 years, and son Ernie, his wife Evelyn, their children Diana Sagert, Darrin, Bradina, and his favorite great granddaughter Avaya. He is also survived by his sister, Marj, of Morden, MB, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 7 from 7 - 9 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. A private family graveside service will be held at Greendale Cemetery. A Celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Saturday, January 8 at 1 p.m. at Greendale MB Church, 6550 Sumas Prairie Road, Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations to MCC would be appreciated. Online condolences may be given at: www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com

MacKENZIE O. Diane Of Mission, BC passed away peacefully on December 26, 2010 releasing her from the pain of chronic conditions bravely borne for too long. Born June 27, 1941 in Matsqui, BC to James Clifford and Stella Grace MacKenzie (nee Mathers) of Straiton; she grew up and lived most of her working life in the Fraser Valley. She worked at the Bank of Commerce in Abbotsford before moving to Vancouver for a few years and taking time off to begin a family with husband, Elwin Kelly. After the family returned to Abbotsford, she worked at Mahoney’s Bakery until she was volunteered to help with a centennial project of the local Women’s Institutes. This adventure resulted in a move to Victoria in 1989 to become the BC Museums and Galleries Advisor after having served as the first curator of the MSA Museum from its inception in 1969. Career changes brought her back to the Valley working in the Telephone Museum in Aldergrove and then for Mission Native Housing and going on to establish the Learning Centre (computer school) in Mission. After the sale of the school, Diane worked in programming at the British Columbia Forrest Museum in Duncan. Retirement brought her back to the Valley, first to Abbotsford and then to Mission. The variation in her volunteer career rivaled that of her professional. Diane will be missed by her siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. The memorial services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, January 8th at Straiton Community Hall, 4698 Sumas Mountain Road, Abbotsford. Donations in lieu of flowers are welcomed to Straiton Community Club or Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of Canada.

He pushed his way to be the front of the line to be the first one down the mountain. Jim was always an adventurer. Jim was a founding member of the Skyline Club in Abbotsford where he made many friends and enjoyed many happy evenings. James is survived by his wife Gladys (nee Atkinson) and his children Shannon (John), Lee (Sandra) and Robin (Linda) and their grandchildren Lia, Scotia, Clinton, Jordan, Tyler, Cora and Jodie. James was predeceased by his son Scott. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at the Abbotsford District Teachers Association Hall, 2570 Cyril Street, Abbotsford, BC at 1:30, Friday, January 7. In lieu of flowers donations to the Heart and Stroke fund would be appreciated.
