Negrin singing a happier tune DanKINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS
On a recent Friday morning, John Negrin was ripping a series of slap shots at an empty net as the Abbotsford Heat’s morning skate was winding down. As Negrin leaned into a blast from the blue line, his composite stick snapped in two, and the bottom half made a looping Åight over the glass, narrowly missing a Heat staffer who had dropped in to watch. Negrin turned, eyes wide and glove over his mouth, apologizing profusely while trying to suppress a chuckle. The grin on the 21-year-old defenceman’s face mirrored his sunny outlook these days. Two injury-riddled seasons have severely tested the gregarious West Vancouver native’s patience, but after recovering from three surgeries, he’s savouring every opportunity to be on the ice with his teammates. “At times, it was tough,” Negrin said, reÅecting on his injury-related tribulations. “When you’ve spent your life playing sports, being on crutches and sitting at home is a change, for sure. “So after being out for a year and a half, to be back in the lineup and back around the guys is great. I’m really enjoying it.” Negrin’s injury odyssey began in January 2010, when he suffered a broken right wrist. As he was preparing to return to the Heat lineup, he realized something was wrong with his left knee. Turns out, he’d suffered a fractured kneecap back in November, but that injury had been originally misdiagnosed. The ensuing surgery shelved him for the rest of the season. He returned to the Heat lineup in October, but his comeback lasted just three games when it was discov-
John Negrin had to rebuild his skating stride after a series of knee surgeries, but he’s back in the Abbotsford Heat lineup and contributing in the team’s drive for a playoff berth. ered one of the screws in his knee had broken off. That necessitated a second procedure last fall to remove the screws and a bone fragment. During his convalescence, Negrin had a lot of time on his hands. But rather than mope, he began to pursue another passion – music. An avid guitarist and singer, he met a music producer in North Vancouver and started writing songs. He’s recording one of his tracks later this month. “It’s mainly acoustic, pretty laid-back, easy-going music,” said Negrin, who compares his sound to that of Jack Johnson. “I enjoy doing it, and I had the opportunity to play for someone who’s in the music industry. It’s a passion of mine, so I Ägured why not? I’ll give it a shot.” Without a doubt, music provided an avenue for Negrin to blow off steam during his extended recovery period(s). His Heat teammates have prevailed upon him

to sing at team functions in the past. “It’s good to have an outlet,” he noted with a grin. “Hockey is our job, but there’s more to life, and there’s other things you can do. In my case, it’s nice to relax by playing some music.” Negrin’s physical rehab was the polar opposite of his laid-back musical vibe. After being cleared to skate again a couple months ago, he’d show up at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre for earlymorning on-ice sessions supervised by Heat assistant coaches Steve O’Rourke and Troy Ward. “It was a long process for him, and we started at Square 1,” O’Rourke related. “It was almost like hockey school all over again. “There were some basic skating issues that we had to start with, just with opening and pivoting, because a lot of that movement had kind of shut down on him. Primed for playoff push In each edition of the Abbotsford News's FACEOFF magazine, beat reporter Dan Kinvig chats with head coach Jim Playfair about the state of the team. For future editions of FACEOFF, fans are invited to pose their own questions for Playfair. Submit your questions for consideration via email to sports@abbynews. com, or via Twitter to @dankinvigsports. We spoke with Playfair prior to the Heat's March 18-19 home set against the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Q
The Änal 13 games of the regular season are against fellow North Division teams. That's really a positive, isn't it?
Jim PLAYFAIR
A"I think the media looks at it as 13
games in our division – I look at it as one game at a time and break it down that way. I think when you look at the bigger picture, it's exactly where we should be when we came off the road trip (Äve games in six days, March 1-6). I expected us to have 74 points going into the Änal 13 games of the regular season, based on our record and our potential on that road trip, and we came back with 73 after splitting with Wilkes-Barre at home. So I really
feel we're close to where we have to be, and now it's about making sure we earn our points and earn our chance to climb in the division."
Q
The Calgary Flames recently recalled Lance Bouma and Ales Kotalik, and Cam Cunning suffered a knee injury. Those developments have really added a
We’ve had players grow up, mature, take responsibility. Jim Playfair degree of difÄculty for your team during the stretch drive, hasn't it?
A"There's no difference between inju-
ries, recalls, or players playing bad. If they've got to sit in the dressing room, it's really the same. Ales Kotalik's in the NHL where he should be, Lance
Bouma's where he should be. "I think the onus falls on the players who are in the lineup to take it upon themselves as a personal challenge to stick to the system details, compete hard with character and courage, and give us a chance to play in the playoffs."
Q
Big picture, I'm curious how you'd evaluate the growth of this young group from the start of the year, and what the next step is for them to take down the stretch of the regular season?
A"Being the youngest team in the
league, we knew it would take us until the end of October to Änd some consistency in our game. I think the young players getting hurt – Bancks, Patterson, Wahl, the concussion issues they had – that set us back for our growth. "With the injuries we had and the inconsistencies of our lineup, I think we did a really good job of trying to indentify a structured way to play that allowed us to be a good team. We've played 35 one-goal games, and we set a new record for shootout wins. We did some good things. Our Continued on page 10

YOU COULD WIN
$10,000 John Morrow photo
Q
You're from Harris, Saskatchewan, and a fan of the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders. I'm curious what your grieving process was like after the last two Grey Cups.
A"There were some thoughts of switching teams after the Ärst loss
(2009), with the too-many-men-on-the-Äeld call. (Chuckles) I felt bad for the guy who was on there and shouldn't have been. The Riders coaching staff wouldn't even give away his name, because of that time Paul McCallum missed the Äeld goal to lose the semiÄnals to B.C. (in 2004) and some fan dumped three tons of manure on his neighbour's yard. It's been a grieving process, but we're going to be back. There's only eight teams in the league."
Q Who's the most famous person in your cellphone? A"I guess it would have to be Alex Ovechkin, for sure." Q
Besides hockey, which sports trophy would you most like to win?
A"I would have to say a gold medal in the Olympics, just for anything. When you win that, you're the best in the world at your particular sport, and that's a pretty huge honour."
Q Do you have a pregame superstition? A"I used to when I was younger, but I don't anymore. It's just your
regular stuff – I eat chicken and pasta pregame, and try to have a little nap and get in the cold tub before the game. I always re-tape my stick and put on all your equipment from right to left. And I guess I like to go onto the ice right after the goalie. Other than that . . . (chuckles)."
the (Saskatoon) Blades in the WHL. He'd always come back to Saskatoon for luncheons and speeches, and I got his autograph when I was younger. Watching him play, how couldn't you love him? He was the heart and soul of Toronto, and wherever he played. He used his Ästs, and he had one of the most powerful wrist shots in the league."

TOOLS of the
TRADE
It takes a vast array of gadgets and gizmos to keep a pro hockey team running smoothly, as photographer John Van Putten found out when he ventured into the workshop of Abbotsford Heat equipment manager Shawn ‘Stixy’ Smith
Stixy Smith has a variety of tools for his trade, from as small as a hand-held skate edger that does a quick and dirty job to get a player through their shift when the clock clicks down, to as big as an industrial sewing machine. Pros spend a lot of time in their skates, and a comfortable and supportive Ät is essential. Smith has the tools to get a customized Ät, including a boot stretcher and boot punch press.

Kotalik a model pro If you have listened to any of the Abbotsford Heat radio broadcasts over the past two years, or seen any of our Heat branded advertising (“Up Close and Professional” comes immediately to mind), the one thing that we have always discussed is how close the NHL game is to that of the American Hockey League. Team president Tom Mauthe, in every meeting that he attends when growing the Heat business, always mentions that the AHL game is affordable, accessible, and professional. Never has there been a better case to roll up to the podium than that of Ales Kotalik. As most of our astute hockey fans are aware, Kotalik was banished to the Heat from the parent club, the Calgary Flames, because his production (six goals over 54 games, including three in 26 this season) did not match his $3-million-per-year salary. It would have been very easy for Kotalik to mail in a performance. He arrived during the Heat’s busiest part of the schedule, and was welcomed back to the AHL with seven games in his Ärst nine nights. Bus travel, lower per diem, air travel that isn’t charter,
Kotalik was thrust back into the AHL world and had to prove himself all over again. It would not be easy. Craig Conroy, the special assistant to Flames interim GM Jay Feaster, came to Abbotsford to observe his friend in action. You see, Conroy was in the same boat as Kotalik this season – a veteran who was spotted up in the press box enjoying the popcorn instead of being on the ice, because he could not crack the Flames’ lineup. Kotalik was demoted, Conroy retired. But in talking about Kotalik, Conroy got that twinkle in his eye. “What Kotes needed was his conÄdence back,” said Conroy. “He needs to be able to get back on the ice and produce. Being in a position where you are thrown on the ice into a role that you aren’t used to wears on you mentally. Here is a player who simply needed playing time to get his game back.” Heat head coach Jim Playfair was happy to see an offensively gifted forward enter his locker room, and his plan was simple: Play Kotalik, then play him some more. “Ales showed me early that he wanted to work and wanted another shot,” stat-
Negrin thrilled to be back From page 3
A lot of his rehab was in a linear position, not opening up his hips. I know there were a lot of days there where I think he was questioning what was going on.” Negrin’s Åuid skating ability had been a hallmark of his game, and relearning his stride was an odd process. “All the muscles in my leg had pretty much just tightened up,” he said. “Some of the stuff that came easy to me earlier in my career, I had to work at to get back. I’m still working on stuff, trying to get all the kinks out.” The Änal quarter of the regular season, to be sure, is an intense time of year to be Änding one’s game, but Negrin has done a commendable job. In his Ärst eight games back, he posted four assists and an even plusminus rating.
“It’s always tough to come back in the second half of the year when everything’s ramped up and you haven’t got that same level,” O’Rourke observed. “But I think he’s responded well. He’s given us some good minutes.” The Heat are in the midst of a pressure-packed stretch drive, and Negrin is thrilled to be an active participant. “It’s an exciting time of the year, and I’m happy to be a part of it,” he said. “I think with our team, we’ve John Negrin got to be the hardest-working team on the ice. We don’t have the most skill, but we have a lot of heart, we have a lot of guys who have great work ethics. “As long as we work hard and believe in each other, the possibilities are endless.”
ed Playfair. “I know that if I worked him hard and put him in situations where we all could succeed, that he would succeed.” Succeed is what Kotalik did. Never in the Heat’s short history has a player been so proliÄc, scoring over a point per game. His attitude off the ice was even better than his play on it. “A complete professional,” Playfair marvelled. “Never gave us a problem ever. Gave the young kids a lesson on what it takes to jump to the next level (the NHL). He did everything that was asked of him.” Kotalik got his second shot at the NHL on Thursday, March 17, and he stepped up and gave the Flames exactly what they were looking for – secondary scoring. It was just one game, and you may yet see Kotalik back here in Abbotsford before the season is over. But what Kotalik has shown everyone with his trip to Abbotsford is that he can still play and still contribute. Let that be a lesson to anyone coming down to the Heat. Dave Sheldon is the director of communications and broadcast for the Abbotsford Heat. He writes a monthly column for Faceoff magazine.

goals-against is really good, our shots-against is second in the league. So I think there's a good base of play that we have, and we've had players mature, grow up, take responsibility, decide they're going to take control of their careers. "I've been disappointed with our group the last Äve games, based on how their overall competitive level has wandered. I think if you're going to be a top team in March, we've put a lot of good foundation in place up until now. I think the players have got to be a lot more consistent and a lot more aggressive in how they play with winning puck battles and starting on time. "When you look at the games against Wilkes-Barre (March 11-12), which is arguably the best team in the league, we had no interest in competing on Friday night. I challenged them, created the emotional environment for the group to go out and get to a 4-2 lead the next night. I look at it like, they have the ability to do it when they're challenged. Now, they need to challenge themselves internally and individually, and they'll get the results they want with being a playoff team."
Q
Come in and see our new expanded showroom!
You've spoken on several occasions about how you were impressed with what a good teammate Ales Kotalik was during his time with the Heat. It seemed to me that his offensive conÄdence and production (19 points in 18 games) was contagious with the rest of the group as well.
A"We've certainly had our young players pay attention to how Ales carries himself
on the ice and off the ice, how he has a shot mentality and how he sees himself as a player who can get pucks to the net on a consistent basis. He had nine shots on goal his last game, and we have players who don't get nine shots on goal in a month. It's strictly about how committed you are to being a good pro. I think our kids can look at that and certainly realize they can grow into that type of player, with the proper type of commitment to their game."
