The man who was struck and killed by a van while out for a walk on Tuesday morning in Abbotsford is being remembered as a selfless individual with a kind and gentle heart. Amarjit Singh Sidhu, 74, was adored in Abbotsford’s Indo-Canadian community for his tireless volunteer efforts and his devotion to helping others, said Satwinder Bains, director of the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at University of the Fraser Valley. “He was one of the most prolific volunteers that the gurdwara (Sikh temple) has ever had,” she said. “He was such a revered, honest human being. He had no airs about him.” Sidhu was walking along Blueridge Drive, east of Townline Road, Tuesday at about 6:30 a.m. when he was struck by a GMC Safari van. He died at the scene, and police are still investigating the circumstances that led to the collision. Sidhu had been an executive member for the past 10 years with the Khalsa Diwan Society, and most recently served as the group’s recording secretary. Kabal Hundal, president of the society, said Sidhu served at the Khalsa Diwan Society Temple – located at 33094 South Fraser Way – every day. He would arrive in the morning around 9 a.m. and stay until 6 or 7

But Norm Sangha, the society’s past president and current president of the Indo-Canadian Seniors’ Association, said Sidhu will best be remembered for his kind soul. “When people came to the temple, he would ask very politely, ‘What would you like to eat? Can I prepare you some tea?’ ... We don’t know how we will find another person like him, who devoted his life to the temple.” Sangha said Sidhu moved to Canada 17 years ago from Punjab, India and settled in Abbotsford. He was a bookkeeper until his retirement two years ago, and worked in the evenings so that he could serve at the temple during the day. He has two sons and three daughters, all married and living in Abbotsford. His wife died on Jan. 4 of this year when she had a heart attack while visiting family in India. Hundal said Sidhu’s death is a “huge loss” to the community, as he did so much for others without asking for anything in return. “It was just his nature – some people want to do good for others.” The funeral will be held this Sunday at 10 a.m. at Abbotsford Arts Centre, followed by a prayer service at 2 p.m. at the Khalsa Diwan Society Temple.

An Abbotsford man who struck a 63-yearold across the face with a liquor bottle and yelled derogatory ethnic comments last April has pleaded guilty to assault. Daronne Malcome Dobni, 30, was initially charged with assault with a weapon but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge during a brief appearance in Abbotsford provincial court. A sentencing hearing will be set for a later date. The incident occurred on April 26, 2011, when Dobni, who is Caucasian, approached a group of four Indo-Canadian men sitting on benches in the area of Old Yale Road and Mitchell Street, near Fishtrap Creek Park.

a liquor bottle, knocking the victim to the ground. Dobni then fled on foot along Dehavilland Drive. A police canvass of the area turned up several people who reported having previously heard racial slurs from a person matching the suspect’s description. In the days that followed, some neighbours took photos of the man when they saw him out in public, and gave them to police. Dobni, who has no previous criminal record, was confirmed as the suspect, and was arrested and charged. At the time, charges related to the commission of a hate crime were considered, but those were never laid.

Luke Douglas George Patillo, 20, was charged with participating in a riot, mischief over $5,000 and two counts of break and enter. He has no previous criminal record, according to the provincial court database. Crown prosecutors have now charges 78 suspected rioters with 207 counts, and charges are being considered against dozens more.

Local cricket players no longer have a place to compete in Abbotsford, say fans of the sport. Jack Tumber, a long-time member of the Fraser Valley Cricket Club, said an upgrade to the Abbotsford Exhibition Park cricket field has left it unusable until at least the end of summer, and the only other local facility at Clearbrook Park was shut down by the city in June 2011. On Monday, council denied a request to allow the two local organizations – the Fraser Valley Cricket Club and the Abbotsford Cricket Club – to resume play at the facility. The two clubs consist of a total of six teams, playing in various divisions of the BC Mainland Cricket League. The Clearbrook pitch, located at 3680 Clearbrook Rd., was closed due to concerns from neighbouring households. Complaints ranged from loud noise and smoking, to vulgar language and urinating in nearby bushes. The city has even installed sections

We will respect the wishes of the neighbours,” said Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman. “What council will do is look for another park, of which Clayburn Park may be a viable option. “The problem is, a cricket pitch takes up an incredibly large piece of land and it’s quite lengthy how long the games last,” added Banman. The circular-shaped field can vary from 450 to 500 feet in diameter, and the playing area has to have a minimum size of 150 yards from boundary to boundary. Police seek witnesses in assault
Abbotsford Police want to talk to three people who were near the scene of a brutal assault at Mill Lake Park on Wednesday morning. Const. Ian MacDonald said the condition of the 30-year-old victim is improving, and police are continuing to seek information from witnesses and others. Among these are three people who were approached by a citizen who discovered the injured man. The first man was approached along South Fraser Way before 4 a.m. and was told there was a body in Mill Lake Park. “Well, you better call police then,” the man responded. Two others were in a vehicle flagged down shortly after. The man

and woman drove into the park area, and the woman called 911 from a payphone. Police, fire and ambulance crews arrived on scene and found the victim in serious condition on the northeast side of the lake near some benches. He had apparently been with a group of people during the attack. The man was first taken to Abbotsford Regional Hospital and was airlifted from there to another Lower Mainland hospital. An Abbotsford man who was named earlier this month as one of the Lower Mainland’s 10 most wanted car thieves has been busted in Coquitlam. Million Gerbe Radia, 32, was arrested Saturday, March 24 at the Boulevard Casino after security staff recognized him from the list, which was published online and in media reports. He was among four of the thieves RADIA who either turned themselves in or were arrested since March 15. Radia was on the list for having allegedly stolen two vehicles within four days and fleeing from police on both occasions. He has an across-Canada ban from driving, and police warned that he was considered violent. He was wanted for possession of stolen property and breach of probation. Two other Abbotsford men who were on the list, released by the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT), are still at large. Christopher John Bursey, 22, is wanted for possession of stolen property, theft, possession of break-in instruments, and unlawful use of ID. Clint Warren Rose, 35, is a repeated car thief, wanted for breach of his bail conditions and driving while prohibited. The owner of the pitbull cross that had an altercation with a toddler at Jackson Elementary school last Friday rejects that her dog “attacked the toddler,� saying it was only playing. Ashley Patrignani’s story was on the front page of the Tuesday edition of The News, and on a CTVBC’s broadcast. The young mother said her 19-month-old daughter Miah was playing with the dog, when it unexpectedly bit at her face. Then when she fell backward to the ground, the dog grabbed the girl’s leg. Patrignani said she had to literally beat the dog away, punching it in the face. In a phone interview with The News, Yvonne Brien said,
“I think it was blown out of proportion, and that has to do with the nasty reputation pitbulls have.� Brien feels some people are fearful of the pitbull breed, and more likely to label its actions vicious than they would be with other breeds. She said her dog has no history of violent behaviour. But Keira is rambunctious, and used to roughhousing with her two sons – two sturdy young men of 18 and 16. She believes the dog’s nails scratched Miah’s face. She acknowledged that there is a “no dogs� sign at the park, and Keira was off her leash – but said dogs out for a romp

Brien learned through media reports that police wanted to speak with the owner of a pitbull named Keira, and came forward. Member of pioneer family passes: Richard Trethewey A member of one of Abbotsford’s most prominent pioneer families, Richard Trethewey, passed away on March 19, at the age of 89. The Trethewey family moved to Abbotsford from Haney in 1927, four years after Richard’s birth. His father Joseph Edgar took over management of his father’s mill, the Abbotsford Lumber Company, on Mill Lake. Richard was the oldest of five children born to mother Margaret. He was well known during the 1960s and 1970s for operating local business Celwood Industries with two of his brothers, Alan and Bill. He was instrumental in building a Canada-wide distribution network for windows manufactured by Celwood, followed by folding doors and highend kitchen cabinets. The company became a significant business and employer, with a 90,000-square-foot manufacturing plant on the Abbotsford-Mission Highway. Later in life, Richard was prominent for his nationwide conservation efforts for wetlands and waterfowl, working for Ducks Unlimited (DU). His brother J.O. said his earliest memories of

He travelled the world to seek the generosity of many high-profile artists to donate the artworks, and arranged for Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, to provide the foreword. “He always thought big,” said J.O. For Richard’s retirement from DU activities at the age of 80,
he organized a dinner/ auction that netted $120,000. He was also active with Delta Waterfowl and B.C. Wildlife Federation. Richard served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and in peacetime, achieving the rank of flight lieutenant. He was also a partner with brother Alan in Trethewey Logging Company, Port Douglas of Harrison Lake, which ultimately became the third largest forestry company in British Columbia. When he retired from the family business interests, he returned to Haney, acquiring ownership of Coniagas Ranch, the original family farm. He actively farmed 240 acres, specializing in strawberries, raspberies and blueberries, becoming a major producer. With wife Leslie, he raised three children: Geoffrey, Gail and Sharon. J.O. said his brother maintained good health through most of his life, but finally succumbed to cancer.

On Point Some day, someone ought to do a study on office workers – specifically as it relates to communal kitchen conduct. I speak of two particular behaviours which seem prevalent in virtually any office environment. One is the widespread phobic aversion to doing dishes. The other is the habit of abandoning food in the refrigerator. Office lunchroom dynamics consist of three identifiable groups: 1. The Worker Bees, a small group of domesticated individuals who do all the dishes in the sink, regardless of who put them there. They do so with minimal protest, other than perhaps posting little notes above the sink, ranging from cute: These dishes don’t do themselves, to angry: Don’t leave your dishes for others to do! (You see
the fatal flaw in that sign. It merely reinforces the perception that dishes left in the sink will get done.) 2. The Independents – people who quietly do their own dishes, collect their food from the fridge, and ignore everything else. 3. The Others – a cabal of carefree souls who eat, dump their dishes and stroll off. No one really knows who they are, but they generate a full sink every day. They’re also the folks who heat uncovered food in the communal microwave, and when it explodes, they take their plate of chow and vanish, leaving the goo-coated appliance for someone else to clean. You have to wonder about the Others. Is this behaviour consistent in their private lives? Do they not do their dishes at home? If not, who does? Is this gender-specific? I suspect not. Or do they only dump and dash at work? If that’s true, it begs the question, why? Is it a feeling of anonymity? Misplaced passive-aggressive resistance to corporate control? Troubled childhood? Now ... go to any office fridge, open the door and peer into the depths.
Almost guaranteed there will be a number of objects at the back that are carpeted in mould, or seaping puddles. There’s a Tupperware container in which something is growing with such robustness it has pushed up the lid, and you’d swear there is a little set of

These are the morphing remains of lunches, placed there presumably by people who at one time intended to eat them. Why else bring food to work, if it’s not going to be consumed? I have yet to work in an office that couldn’t feed a small community of homeless from the food that expires in the lunchroom fridge.
Yogurt has to be the most popular food in North America that is rarely actually eaten. I think it’s just a good intentions thing for people wanting to lose weight, or “eat healthy.” You buy yogurt. You feel accomplishment. You’re done. You don’t really have to eat it. Ditto with leftovers. People take leftovers to work so they can feel good about not throwing them away at home. So, they put them in the fridge and that’s where they stay, until the office Refrigerator Nazi notices a new life form seeking freedom from its plastic container, and whoosh, into the trash can it goes. Fruit, same deal. People bring fruit. Nobody eats fruit. They put it in the crisper. Fruit shrivels, sags, leaks and grows a fur coat. I once found in a company fridge a half-dozen petrified mandarin oranges which, if fired from a cannon, could have penetrated tank armour. Anyone interested in a petrified egg sandwich? If you can find a clean plate to put it on, you’re welcome to it...

Many better reasons for MLA jumping ship Having been in the Liberal caucus since it was first elected, the reasons for Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen’s jumping from the Liberal ship could have been many. It could have been B.C.’s continuing lead in child poverty across Canada. Or perhaps the looting of ICBC and B.C. Hydro, the increase in MSP premiums, and other flat “tax” hikes that make our province less fair and just. Or maybe dirty, unsafe hospi-
tals, splitting elderly couples in need of care, and reducing services to kids in need, at school. But no, he reportedly cites the 2004 B.C. Rail sale and resulting scandal, and Premier Clark’s “inconsistent statements” as the main irritants. Had he been a surviving passenger on the Titanic, his complaint may have been the ice in the drink, rather than the ice in the ocean. Erik Olthof

A driver whose car hit a guard rail and flipped 100 feet down the road on Monday fled the scene and was tracked down a few hours later. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the man was driving a BMW north on Whatcom Road near Westview Boulevard at about 11:20 a.m., when he hit the guard rail. The car flipped and landed on its
wheels, deploying the air bags. The driver fled before police and ambulance crews arrived. MacDonald said police tried to find the driver, but he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t located until several hours later when he was taken to hospital by ambulance. MacDonald said he did not know who called paramedics and what kind of injuries the man sustained.

He next appears April 23 in court on those charges. Meanwhile, Virk is slated to be sentenced Aug. 27 in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack, along with co-accused Randeep Match, 30, also of Abbotsford. The two were convicted last fall of possession for the purpose of trafficking in connection with a 2009 incident in which they were found in an Abbotsford berry field, near the CanadaU.S. border, with four cocaine-filled bags. Last month, Virk received a 45-day conditional sentence (house arrest) and a five-year firearms ban for an assault conviction related to an August 2011 incident.

The local karaoke singers found out earlier this week that they would not be performing again. After gaining the approval of the judges during their audition in Vancouver â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Presbys performed Cher and Peter Ceteraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;After Allâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Abbotsford couple qualified for the next phase of competition. In all, 244 performers from across the country were moved on to the second round. However, during last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show, the panel of judges had to whittle that number down to just 36 semi-finalists. The Presbys were not among them. Celeste said she was disappointed that they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the opportunity to perform for the judges again. They only sang one song. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They just cut it down from what they had,â&#x20AC;? said Celeste. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought when we went into this thing we were going to have to sing quite a few songs before we got to the judges, but no.â&#x20AC;? A newly signed partnership to develop a 6,000-hectare expansion of the Hemlock ski resort is a result of three years of negotiations between the Sts’ailes First Nation and Langley entrepreneur Ralph Berezan. But over the 60-year term of the contract Sts’ailes Chief Willie Charlie said it will bring changes that will transform the way his people live. The ceremony followed Sts’ailes customs and included traditional songs and dances, but there were also goodnatured exchanges of jokes and barbs between Charlie and Berezan, demonstrating the respect for each other the two men have built over the three years of negotiations. The proposed development area is massive at 6,000 hectares, and will extend the existing Hemlock ski resort to the western shores of Harrison Lake. In addition to the new mountains opened to skiing and a web of ski lifts, there are plans for a marina, hotels, golf courses, riding stables, zip lines and more. “It’s a development that’s going to take 60 years (to complete),” said Berezan, noting that the application is still awaiting final approvals from senior levels of government. In the meantime, Berezan says he is committed to replacing one of the older lifts at Hemlock with a new quad chair lift by the fall of 2013. “It’s a start towards this project,” said Berezan, who also presented a $100,000 cash gift to the Sts’ailes Legacy Fund that day, “as a token of our appreciation.” Chief Charlie stressed “the magnitude, the enormity” of the impacts of “this very significant milestone for the Sts’ailes... it will have impacts forever on our people and once it starts we can’t get it back.” The benefits are, first and foremost, jobs and opportunities, said Charlie. As a year-round destination, Hemlock is projected to provide 22,000 jobs over the 60 years.

Eleven women made the initial cut following last Friday’s Lingerie Football League tryout at Sportstown in Richmond. Nearly two dozen women tried out for a spot on the B.C. Angels – which will be playing their two home games at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. League founder and commissioner Mitchell Mortaza tweeted following the tryout: “This was the greatest group of athletic women to ever compete at an LFL tryout, ever.” Mortaza said those who made this cut are invited to a mini-camp to try out for one of the final 20 roster positions.
The B.C. Angels will make their debut in Abbotsford on Saturday, Aug. 25 against the Regina Rage. While the athletes won’t be paid, Mortaza said they’ll instead receive plenty of profile and media attention. Friday’s two-hour session saw the LFL hopefuls demonstrate their offensive and
defensive skills. They were run through a series of drills, from one-onone tackling to throwing and catching, running pass routes, and trying to sack the quarterback. The tryout left many of the women with souvenirs in the form of scrapes and bruises. Following the tryout, as Mortaza met with
his staff to determine the finalists, many of the participants said they had fun, and enjoyed the camaraderie and workout. There were no women from Abbotsford in the try-outs. Those selected were from Vancouver, and various Lower Mainland communities, including Coquitlam, Surrey and Richmond.

Abbotsford Pilots goalie Aaron Oakley turned in a heroic perfor mance in Game 5 of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League finals, but the Delta Ice Hawks prevailed 3-2 in overtime. Oakley turned aside 52 of the first 54 shots he faced on Tuesday, but the 55th of the night, off the stick of Delta’s Anthony Brito at 7:32 of the extra session, got past him. Brito took a pass in the slot from Cody Larsen and unleashed a one-timer. Oakley got a piece of it, but not enough to stop the puck from trickling over the goal line. The win gave the Ice Hawks a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven PIJHL final series. Game 6 goes at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Abbotsford’s MSA Arena. TRETHEWEY, Richard Bowman March 10, 1923 - March 19, 2012
Richard’s family is saddened to announce his passing on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Ridge Meadows Hospital at the age of 89. Richard was pre-deceased by his parents Margaret and Edgar, brothers Alan and Bill, first wife Leslie and son Geoffrey. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, brother J.O. and sister-in-law Marlene, sister Phyllis (Watt), daughters Sharon (Stewart) and Gail (Pearce), sons-in-law Ken and Cam, and grandchildren Jacqueline, Trevor, Heather, Rory, Meghan and Silas. Richard was a Flying Officer and later a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII, flying Cansos (flying boats) over the Indian Ocean based in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). He continued his RCAF career postwar in Canada, flying Search and Rescue missions in the arctic, and working as a recruiting officer until his three brothers Alan, Bill and J.O. invited him to join their businesses in Abbotsford. After retiring from business, he purchased and operated the family farm, Coniagas Ranch, in Maple Ridge. Richard was an enthusiastic volunteer for Ducks Unlimited Canada, Delta Waterfowl, B.C. Wildlife Federation, and the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The family will welcome friends and relatives to a celebration of Richard’s life at Meadow Gardens Golf Club, 19675 Meadow Gardens Way, Pitt Meadows, Thursday, April 5 from 2 to 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire a donation may be made to a charity of their choice. “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still missed and very dear.”
JANZEN Adolf Abram Peacefully Adolf went to be with the Lord March 21, 2012 at the age of 91. Born in Danilowka, Ukraine to Abram and Sara (Sawatsky) Janzen, he was the fourth of seven children. He enjoyed fishing, playing the clarinet and making his own skates. Though the churches were closed, the family read the Bible and sang hymns. In 1941 he was drafted into the Russian army and later the German army where he worked as a translator. After the war he attended a Christian Conference where met Elvira. As an MCC rep. he heard about jobs in Canada and emigrated to Winnipeg. He married Elvira Aug.1, 1951. They attended Central MB Church where Dad was an usher and Hausvater. Dad worked as a mechanic and opened his own garage called North Kildonan Motors. He also built houses and an apartment block. Three children were born; Johanna, Eleanor and Fred. Dad enjoyed going for drives, playing dominoes, and going to the lake with us. We moved to BC in 1973 and joined Bakerview Church. Dad worked as a finish carpenter, built 5 houses and managed an apartment block. We enjoyed many picnics with the grandchildren; Erik, Kristina and Adrian and Dad enjoyed taking the family out to restaurants. Dad and Mom traveled to Ontario, Hawaii, Arizona, Europe and Colombia. As Dad lost his eyesight due to glaucoma, he really enjoyed the fellowship of his coffee buddies. Christian radio, church and singing hymns gave him strength to be cheerful despite his declining eyesight. He encouraged his family to work diligently, to serve God and others. He helped his family generously; sponsoring children and grandchildren on Missions trips and supported Christian radio and Missions groups. He visited sister Lena and relatives in Germany many times; even in 2010. In his last year at Menno Home, Dad enjoyed visiting with family and friends and singing hymns. We celebrated his 91st birthday by bringing Elvira’s cake there: with his children and grandchildren. We’d like to thank the staff at W2 at Menno Home for their wonderful care. He is predeceased by his parents Abram and Sara Janzen, siblings Anna, Liese, Susa and Jakob and infant son Paul. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Elvira, children Johanna (Aldo), Astri, Eleanor (Richard), Fred (Monde) and grandchildren Erik (Katherine), Kristina (Johannes) Adrian (Heidi) and Joseph. He is also mourned by sister Lena, Nikolai and Leni and their six boys, relatives in Germany; Ilja, Alla, Waltraut and families, in Russia; Nina and Ira, and cousins Menno, Vera, and Elsie in Ontario. PATIENCE Beaton Russell Passed away peacefully at Pleasant View Home March 21st, 2012 with daughter Heather at his side. He is Predeceased by wife Kay in 1996; survived by his 4 children, Linda Ball of Mexico, son Dale of Mission, daughter Sandy(Gerry) Masuda of New Westminster and daughter Heather of Mission; grandson Derek Ball of Kirkland Lake Ontario; brother Wallace of Chilliwack. Beaton retired to Mission in 1969 and will be remembered for his community work with the Canadian Red Cross blood donor clinic and the Royal Canadian Legion poppy fund, as well as many other organizations. The family would like to thank the staff at Pleasant View care home for their kind and compassionate care of Beaton over the last year and a very special thank you to Lynnette Smith. It is with sorrow that we say good-bye to Steve Mudry who passed away peacefully in his sleep March 22, 2012 at the age of 91 in Abbotsford, BC. Steve is survived by brothers, Jack and Ernie and sisters, Marie, Ann, Ollie and Helen. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Sophy, brothers, Mike, Peter and Wally and sisters, Jean and Molly. Steve was born and raised in the small community of Sandy Lake, MB. He was the 6th oldest of 12 children. He met and married his wife Sophy in 1951 and soon moved to Riverside, California where he and Sophy ran a successful drive-in restaurant for many years. In 1999 after his wife’s passing, Steve moved back to Canada, settling in Abbotsford to live his remaining years. Steve was a very private person but always enjoyed joking with people and having a cheeseburger and fries at McDonalds. Our sincere thanks to the staff at Bevan Lodge for looking after Steve for the past 6 years. You were always there when he needed you. No service, cremation has taken place. Public Input Invited Proposed changes to Visual Quality Objectives within the Chilliwack Forest District The Chilliwack Forest District will be establishing updated Visual Quality Objectives (VQOs) for the Fraser Timber Supply Area (TSA) as per Section 7 (1)(2) of the Government Actions Regulation (GAR) process under the Forest and Range Practices Act. Changes to VQOs are expected to reflect current information gather through an updated Visual Landscape Inventory accepted by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO). Portions of the following scenic areas are proposed for changes: Alouette Lake, Stave Lake, Lake Errock, Chehalis Lake, Nahatlatch Valley, Pitt River, Coquihalla and Hope Princeton Highway Corridors. Draft maps showing the proposed changes are available from the district website at: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/ftp/DCK/ external/!publish/VQO/ Comments received on or before June 1st, 2012 will be considered in the final preparation of the Order, planned to take effect on or after June 29th, 2012.
