Ottawa is sending in military planes to evacuate people from two northern Saskatchewan communities threatened by wildfires. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews and National Defence Minister Peter MacKay said in a news release that Canadian Forces search and rescue aircraft will assist with evacuating nearly 1,000 residents from Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake First Nation. Smoke and shifting winds were hampering efforts to evacuate the community, which is 840 kilometres north of Saskatoon and accessible only by air. The five-square-kilometre fire was burning next to the airport and winds were blowing smoke across the runway, shutting down access to the facility. Saskatchewan officials said late last night that the airport and road were reopened and another 388 residents were evacuated, leaving 400 hunkered down in the community’s schools. About 240 got out on Tuesday. Public Health Agency of Canada is also supplying beds, blankets and other essentials for more than 1,100 evacuees who are being housed in Saskatoon and Prince Albert.
