FOUR COPS IN ‘SURREY SIX’ CASE CHARGED KEVIN DIAKIW (Surrey Leader)
A special prosecutor has approved numerous charges against four Mounties involved in the socalled “Surrey Six” homicide case. A total of 20 charges against RCMP officers Derek Brassington, David Attew, Paul Johnston and Danny Michaud, who were all involved in the Surrey mass murder investigation in which six people were killed in a Whalley highrise in October 2007. Two of the six killed were innocent bystanders: 22-year-old Chris Mohan from Surrey and Ed Schellenberg, 55, of Abbotsford. Earlier this year, the province’s Criminal Justice Branch announced that special prosecutor Christopher Considine was appointed to look into allegations of an inappropriate relationship between an officer involved in the investigation and a potential witness. Brassington and Attew each face charges of breach of trust, obstruction of justice and fraud, while Johnston and Michaud face charges of breach of trust and obstruction of justice. In April 2009, Dennis Karbovanec, then 27, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years after pleading guilty to three counts of second-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. James Bacon is charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in the case, while Cody Rae Haevischer and Matthew Johnson are each charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy. Quang Vinh Thang Le and Sophon Sek are also charged in the case.

Harper government plans to appoint former British Columbia premier Gordon Campbell as Canada’s new high commissioner to Britain. Campbell’s elevation to one of Canada’s highest diplomatic posts comes after he resigned last fall as B.C. premier. The Liberal premier’s popularity plunged when he
introduced the 12-per-cent HST in 2009. Campbell resigned after 26 years in politics, nine of them as premier. Prime Minister Stephen Harper also reached across partisan political lines in 2009 when he appointed Manitoba’s former NDP premier Gary Doer as his ambassador to Washington – considered Canada’s top diplomatic posting. Sources say the official announcement of Campbell’s appointment is days away. Campbell would replace veteran career diplomat James Wright, who was appointed to the high commissioner’s post in August 2006.
