Elections BC is keeping its call centre open until midnight today, the deadline for B.C. residents to register and request a voting package for the harmonized sales tax referendum. The call centre at 1-800-661-8683 has been operating from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to handle requests from people who didn’t receive their personalized voting package in the mail. That was extended to 10 p.m. yesterday and midnight today in an effort to handle the volume of requests. Elections BC has been kept busy with requests from people who weren’t registered as B.C. voters, have moved or otherwise had incorrect information on the voters’ list, or lost their packages after delivery. A few of the three million voting packages mailed in recent weeks have had errors in printing or missing elements. All voters who contact the call centre up to the deadline will be registered, even if they are kept waiting on hold until after midnight, Elections BC spokesman Don Main says. Phone registration takes three to five minutes per caller. Elections BC extended its deadline for receiving completed ballots until Aug. 5 at 4:30 p.m.

SURREY MAYOR: ‘SELL THE SKYTRAIN STATION NAMES’ Surrey North Delta Leader (Black Press)
Leaving SFU Surrey Station, next stop, Concord Station. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts is favouring the idea of selling the names of SkyTrain stops as a way of generating much needed revenue for TransLink, which is in dire need of cash to complete projects such as the Evergreen Line. Watts said naming of the stations would be put under strict rules of taste. She also said it wouldn’t be decided by the mayors. The unelected Translink board would decide the naming criteria. Watts said an example would be to have the Stadium Station renamed “Rogers Arena Station” for a fee. She also said two stops in Surrey could be SFU or Concord stations. The idea comes as the transportation authority works to find additional funding to pay for its transportation plan. Some of the money will come by way of a two-cent charge on each litre of gas which is expected to raise $40 million annually. Watts said it will also require a host of other funding sources including moderate road pricing and contributions from development. All are necessary to fund the regional transit plan, which includes: $20 million annually for Major Road Network improvement projects. $6 million annually for cycling network
infrastructure. 200,000 additional transit hours for the South Fraser Region – 425,000 hours region-wide. Highway 1 RapidBus Service from Langley, through Surrey to the Lougheed SkyTrain station. A New B-Line service from White Rock to Guildford Town Centre, plus a new bus route from White Rock to Langley serving the Surrey community of Grandview Heights. SkyTrain station upgrades and Seabus improvements. Watts said the funding sources and the projects

EX-AFGHANISTAN GENERAL PLEADS GUILTY IN ILLICIT SEX AFFAIR TRIAL MONTREAL (Canadian Press)
A former military commander who was dismissed from his post in Afghanistan after being accused of having an illicit sexual affair with a subordinate has pleaded guilty to two charges. Retired Brig.-Gen. Daniel Menard entered the pleas while facing court martial yesterday morning in Montreal. Menard was charged with two counts of conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline, in violation of the National Defence Act. One charge related to an alleged “intimate personal relationship’’ with a corporal under his command; the second charge was for allegedly trying to impede a military police investigation into the affair. Military regulations bar soldiers, even married couples, from having intimate relations while on deployment. Menard’s possible punishments are: a prison sentence of up to two years; a fine; a reduction in rank; or dismissal with disgrace from Her Majesty’s service, which would make re-enlisting or working for the federal government nearly impossible. The general was initially also charged with four counts of obstructing justice, which were withdrawn. Those more serious charges carried a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Fraser Valley
Menard’s subordinate, Master Cpl. Bianka Langlois, was convicted in a summary trial last Sept. 28 of one count of conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline. She was reprimanded and fined $700. Court documents suggest the two had a sexual affair between Nov. 15, 2009, and April 27, 2010, while Menard – a 26-year army veteran and married father of two – was commanding Canada’s task force in Afghanistan. Authorities say Menard repeatedly tried to persuade his underling to delete incriminating emails once the alleged affair became known in May 2010. He was abruptly removed from his post in Kandahar in June 2010 and sent home in disgrace. Days before his dismissal, a court martial fined Menard $3,500 for negligently firing two rounds from his assault rifle. The general had been slated to assume command of the army in Quebec. Instead his military career was cut short as he tendered his resignation last November and left the military one month later on Dec. 17. The decision to dismiss Menard in such a public fashion drew criticism and prompted a public debate about the military’s strict punishment for fraternization. Part of the criticism was based on the fact that the military refused to immediately release Langlois’ name.

GATOR PIC A FAKE, POLICE SAY; NO CHARGES LAID BELLEVILLE, Ont. (Canadian Press)
It turns out the Stirling “Gator Caper’’ may be a hoax. Police in Stirling-Rawdon, northwest of Belleville, Ont., had released a photo last week of what appeared to be a small alligator in the community’s Mill Pond. They warned people to be careful, and a crew from the Indian River Reptile Zoo near Peterborough, Ont., took to the water in canoes looking for evidence of the gator. Stirling-Rawdon police now say analysis of the photograph by the provincial police forensic ID unit has determined it’s a picture of a photograph of an alligator. Ron Main supplied the picture of the metre-foot long reptile to media, and it was then disseminated by police.

India’s army chief is apparently older than his years. The government ended months of wrangling over Gen. Vijay Kumar Singh’s age when it decided yesterday to recognize his birth date as May 10, 1950. That requires him to retire next year when he turns 62. Singh had argued he wasn’t born until 1951, which would give the thirdgeneration officer another year as army chief. He had entered the date on his school records and sought support from three former chief justices in arguing his case.
A group of computer hackers yesterday claimed to have breached NATO security and accessed hoards of restricted material. The group called Anonymous said it would be “irresponsible’’ to publish most of the material it stole from NATO but that it is sitting on about 1 gigabyte of data. Anonymous posted a PDF file on its Twitter page showing what appeared to be a document headed “NATO Restricted’’ and dated Aug. 27, 2007. “Hi NATO,’’ the group teased on Twitter. “Yes, we haz more of your delicious data,’’ hinting that more would be released in the next few days.
The Mexican army has seized a cache of over 926 tons (840 metric tons) of precursor chemicals used to make methamphetamines, one of the largest such seizures to date in Mexico. The discovery came Wednesday, the same day an army patrol in another location found a sophisticated underground meth lab reachable by a 35-metre long tunnel. Mexico has become a centre for meth production, based on precursor chemical shipped in from foreign suppliers, often in Asia.
The head of the military council ruling Egypt swore in a new Cabinet yesterday under pressure from protesters demanding faster change and a weeding out of those tied to the ousted regime of President Hosni Mubarak. The new government led by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf features 12 new faces and two deputy prime ministers. Thirteen other members kept their jobs. Tension has been rising in Egypt over what many perceive as the army’s reluctance to act against the former regime.
Prime Minister David Cameron’s former communications director did not have a top-level security clearance, which spared him from the most stringent type of vetting, a published report said yesterday. Andy Coulson, a former editor of the News of the World, the paper at the heart of a phone hacking scandal, would have been vetted when he went to work for Cameron once he became prime minister last year. “The disclosure will fuel suggestions that Cameron failed to take proper steps to check allegations that Coulson had been involved in illegal behaviour at the News of the World,’ The Guardian’s report said.

HADZIC WON’T FIGHT WAR CRIMES EXTRADITION UNITED NATIONS (Associated Press)
The last Balkan war crimes suspect sought by the UN war crimes tribunal could be handed over to the court in the Netherlands as soon as today, his lawyer said yesterday. Goran Hadzic has signed a written statement that he will not appeal his extradition to the Hague court, lawyer Toma Fila said. The former leader of Croatia’s ethnic Serbs was arrested on Wednesday after seven years on the run, discovered by Serbian agents who had followed a money trail that began last December when Hadzic’s aides tried to sell a Modigliani Goran Hadzic painting. “He could go this minute, but it was agreed that he should see his family first,’’ Fila said. Hadzic’s wife, sister and son visited him early yesterday in the detention unit of Serbia’s war crimes court in Belgrade. Another family visit is planned for early today and the extradition could follow soon after that, Fila said. Hadzic, a 53-year-old former warehouse worker, is sought for atrocities stemming from the 1991-95 war in Croatia. Those include the levelling of Vukovar and the massacre of some 200 Croat prisoners of war after the devastation of the town on the Danube.

It would give Obama new powers to obtain increases in the government’s borrowing unless blocked by veto-proof two-thirds margins in both the House and Senate. HAVANA, Cuba (Associated Press)
A hearing before Cuba’s Supreme Court today offers jailed American subcontractor Alan Gross a last chance to get his 15-year sentence for sneaking communications equipment onto the island dismissed. The case of the Maryland native, who has been in jail since his arrest in 2009, has undermined efforts at rapprochement between the Cold War enemies. Gross was working on a USAID program meant to foster democracy on the Communist-run island, and Cuba considers such programs subversive, noting that until recently U.S. government literature overtly described their aim as fostering regime change. American officials say privately they hold little hope of Gross’s conviction being thrown out altogether following oral arguments today, but they say the hearing could do something else: clear the way for the Cuban government to release him on humanitarian grounds. Cuban officials have been quietly telling their American counterparts that they are sympathetic to Gross’s personal ordeal; he has lost 100 pounds while in jail, his daughter has been diagnosed with breast cancer, his mother is also ailing, his wife is recovering from surgery and the family has been forced to sell their home.

7 TWILIGHT STARS SURPRISE FANS AT COMIC CON
“The year before Modern Family I think I killed three people on TV,” joked Stonestreet, who won an Emmy last year for best supporting actor in a comedy series. He’s nominated for the award again this year, as are several other members of the cast. Modern Family follows the loving yet nutty families of Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill); his daughter Claire; and his gay son Mitchell, who is raising an adopted Vietnamese daughter with his partner Cam.

SAN DIEGO (Associated Press)
Eric Stonestreet sighs slightly when asked if some people are disappointed at finding out he’s not gay like the flamboyant character he plays with such zeal on Modern Family. Some devoted fans of the TV sitcom have criticized him on Twitter for cussing or doing things they believe his character Cameron Tucker wouldn’t. Others who maintain they can’t see him as anyone but Cam even said they were surprised to see him in this summer’s Bad Teacher, a raunchy comedy about a foul-mouthed, ‘ACTOR junior high school teacher played by PLAYING A Cameron Diaz. CHARACTER’ “That’s the sort of thing I’ve got to stop caring about,” said Stonestreet, 39, who will be hosting a show at Montreal’s Just For Laughs comedy festival next week. “People are disappointed sometimes but I hope they understand that I’m an actor playing a character. They love the character and they might like me too if they give me a chance.” After all, it’s not like he hasn’t done anything besides Modern Family. The Kansas-born Stonestreet has a lengthy list of TV and movies roles including a recurring stint as a technician on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. And his darker side was on full view in appearASSOCIATED PRESS ances on Nip/Tuck and NCIS in which he played Eric Stonestreet isn’t like his Modern Family charmurderers. acter Cam, but says people might like him anyway.
Early risers among Twilight fans got a chance to see what some of their big-screen idols look like first thing in the morning. Not long after dawn broke yesterday, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Elizabeth Reaser and other co-stars of the supernatural movie franchise made a surprise visit to greet fans who had camped out for days to catch a preview of the next Twilight flick at Comic-Con. Greene, Reed and Reaser, who play members of the Cullen vampire family, were joined by Julia Jones and Boo Boo Stewart, who co-star as kinfolk in the rival werewolf pack. The actors signed Twilight posters, mugs and other movie memorabilia, posed for pictures with fans and even served some breakfast goodies to “Twi-hards,” some of whom were in line since Monday afternoon to get into the preview at Comic-Con, a massive gathering for fans of comics, video games, television and film. “I am a morning person, but this is definitely early, getting up at 4:30,” Reed said. “But when people have been camped out since Monday, you just feel it’s a good idea to come out and surprise them.”

KARDASHIAN SUING OLD NAVY
MANGAN IMPRESSED AFTER MEETING ROYALS
LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Vancouver musician Dan Mangan is among the lucky few to have exchanged pleasantries with Prince William and his wife Kate during the royal newlyweds’ recent cross-Canada trek. So, what did he learn from the experience? “Kate’s a babe. Kate’s a total babe,” the affable 28-year-old said with a smile while in Toronto this week, before responding more seriously. “They’re very sweet. I shook hands with them, exchanged about nine words. ... They were really lovely, though. Everybody talks about how the era of really aristocratic, majestic royals is over, and it’s true. “I mean, there’s a lot of people who are facing some serious issues in Britain, so how could they come out there and be Louis XIV and pretend everything’s fine?” Mangan, who won artist of the year at the Verge Music Awards in 2009 and was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize the following year, was one of several musicians to fete the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during a Canada Day celebration in Ottawa, which also included performances from Great Big Sea and Sam Roberts.

Kim Kardashian wants Old Navy to stop using a Canadian lookalike to advertise its clothing. The reality show starlet and model this week sued the clothing store and its parent company, The Gap Inc., in a Los Angeles federal court alleging their ads violated her publicity rights with ads that feature a woman who looks like her. A video of a broadcast ad featuring a smiling, dark-haired woman who bears a resemblance to the real Kardashian has been viewed more than two million times on Old Navy’s YouTube channel. The model in the ads, Torontonative Melissa Molinaro, is not named in the lawsuit. She expressed exasperation that the resemblance was being pointed out again. “Were (sic) still talking about this,” she posted on Twitter, noting the ad ran five months ago. “Some people have too much time on (their) hands.” Kardashian’s lawsuit claims consumers may be confused by the ads and the model’s actual endorsements, which include her
own clothing store and shoe line. A commercial, titled, “Super C-U-TE,” began airing in February and Old Navy is still using some of the promotions, the lawsuit states. The case cites all the benchmarks of modern celebrity: her

eight million followers on Twitter, more than five million fans on Facebook and ranking as one of the most searched-for celebrities on the Internet. Kardashian “has invested substantial time, energy, finances and entrepreneurial effort in developing her considerable professional and commercial achievements and success, as well as in developing her popularity, fame, and prominence in the public eye,” the lawsuit states. Louise Callagy, a spokeswoman for San Francisco-based Gap said the company has not yet seen the case and had no comment. Kardashian, 31, has rocketed to fame in recent years after gaining prominence as a friend of Paris Hilton and for having a sex tape with singer Ray J. She appears along with her family on the E! Entertainment Television series Keeping Up With the Kardashians and routinely graces magazine covers. She recently got engaged to NBA star Kris Humphries. Her lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages and wants a federal judge to prevent Old Navy from using a Kardashian lookalike model in its ads again.

LOBLAW EYES FOOD PRICE INFLATION TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Rising food prices are a key item on the radar of Loblaw executives as they chart the grocery chain’s course this year, with the ideal strategy to ďŹ nd a pricing “sweet spot’’ where sales volumes don’t suffer, says president and CEO Allan Leighton. “There’s a lot of ination in commodities and... 50 or 60 per cent of food produced in Canada is for domestic use, so there’s going to be a lot of pressure, I think, on food price ination,’’ Leighton said on a conference call with analysts. “The most important thing on food is that we keep it on a reasonable level,â€? he said. Economists are warning that rising prices will likely put pressure on Canadian wallets this year as the economy picks up. A Royal Bank survey noted that food prices grew 4.2 per cent and gas prices 29.5 per cent in May.
HOME PRICES TO RISE 4.4 PER CENT THIS YEAR TORONTO (Canadian Press)
The Canadian housing market is making a transition to a much slower pace growth compared to the surge seen in the past decade, according to a Royal Bank housing market outlook. The report released yesterday said home resales are expected to grow by 0.9 per cent this year and remain unchanged in 2012, while home prices will increase by 4.4 per cent this year and 0.4 per cent in 2012. “Such results would mark a signiďŹ cant slowing relative to the performance during the 2002-2008 period,’’ senior economist Robert Hogue wrote in the report. Since 2008, the transition in the housing market has been extremely volatile reecting the impact of events both at home and abroad, it said.

VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Being cautious was the ticket to the top of the leaderboard during yesterday’s opening round of the RBC Canadian Open. Kris Blanks kept it simple on the challenging Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club course and was rewarded with a 3-under-par 67 yesterday for the lead. In a group of 11 players chasing the Jupiter, Fla., native was Canadian Matt McQuillan who was one stroke back at 2 under. The deep, unforgiving rough at Shaughnessy gobbled up shots not landing on the fairway. Less was often better when selecting a club. It was better to give up some distance than to launch a rocket that crashed into the deep, thick grass. “The course is playing really difficult if you get off the fairway,’’ said Blanks, 39, whose best PGA Tour finish was a tie for 10th earlier this year at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. “It’s very penal. It’s a lot more advantageous to hit a longer club from the
fairway then hacking out of the rough.’’ A total of 21 golfers finished below par on a cool day when the sun ducked in and out of the clouds. A heavy rain soaked the course Wednesday night. The forecast for the rest of the week is for sun and temperatures of around 21 degrees. With an average score of 73.03, the Canadian Open had the third most difficult opening round of a tournament this year, behind the Honda Classic and the U.S. Open. The tournament, the third oldest national open golf championship in the world, offers a total purse of US$5.2 million, with the winner earning US$918,000. The last time the Canadian Open was held at Shaughnessy was 2005. Mark Calcavecchia won that year with a score of 5-under 275. This year’s tournament has drawn seven of the top 25 players in the world. The field has 13 major-tournament winners and seven who have won PGA Tour events this season.

HUDSON KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS MIAMI (Associated Press)
San Diego Padres second baseman Orlando Hudson made a quick recovery yesterday from a collision with a wall that knocked him unconscious. Hudson left the field strapped to a stretcher on a cart with his neck in a brace. But shortly after a 5-3 win over Florida, he was walking through the clubhouse texting on his phone. Hudson BASEBALL was taken to a hospital and X-rays were negative. A team spokesman said late yesterday night that although Hudson did not fly on the team charter he did join the Padres in Philadelphia and is listed as day to day. “It was a scary moment,’ manager Bud Black said. “When a guy goes unconscious, you’re worried. Any sort of collision with a wall or a teammate is just a sickening feeling in your stomach, Orlando Hudson and I think we all had that.’ After Hudson leaned forward to make a running catch of a popup in foul territory, his momentum took him into the padded wall. He turned away from the wall just before hitting it, so the back of his head and right shoulder took the brunt of the impact. Hudson fell onto his back with the ball in his glove. Umpire Tim Timmons signalled the batter out, then began waving for help. Hudson didn’t move as teammates and the Padres trainer rushed to his aid. The game was delayed for nearly 10 minutes while Hudson received treatment on the field and regained consciousness. Eventually he moved his arms, spoke and shook at least one teammate’s hand before being driven to the clubhouse. The catch ended a Florida threat in the seventh with the Padres nursing a two-run lead. “An outstanding play considering the circumstance,’ Black said.

ISRAELI PM CALLS FOR PEACE TALKS IN ARAB TV INTERVIEW JERUSALEM (Associated Press)
Israel’s prime minister turned to the Arabic media yesterday in an attempt to lure the Palestinians back to peace talks. Benjamin Netanyahu’s interview with Al-Arabiya TV, set to be broadcast last night, reflects Israeli jitters ahead of a Palestinian plan to seek UN recognition of independence this fall. Netanyahu’s office said it also reflects the significance he attributes to Arab public opinion and the sincerity of his peace overtures. The interview marks the first time Netanyahu has sat down with an Arabic media outlet since he took office two years ago, though he has fielded questions from Arabs before on YouTube. In the interview, Netanyahu says he is willing to negotiate anywhere and with anyone who accepts Israel’s right to exist. “Everything is on the table. But we need to get to the table,’’ Netanyahu said, according to excerpts released by Al-Arabiya ahead of time.

“My City is Abbotsford because of the atmosphere, sights and sounds. We all work together to have happiness.” Nia Krishna “My City is Abbotsford because of the friendly people, city amenities, and country living.” Bhavna Kapdee-Saler “My City is Abbotsford because I love living next to Mill Lake and going there for walks.” Liz “My City is Abbotsford because I have lived here for over 10 years. I contribute in the local community by being a small business owner, a home owner, a volunteer in the community. I have raised my children in this Christian community, and am seeing my grandchildren raised in this city. This city’s great hospital has saved my husband’s life, the local university has educated my daughter, and my small business has had great success with the diverse population. ” Sarita “My City is Abbotsford because I moved here in 1973 and watched this city grow. I have so many memories and all of them are good ones. I think this is a wonderful place to live and raise a family.” Glen “My City is Abbotsford because I appreciate the beauty of parks, Áowers, trees, etc., which our municipality looks after for our enjoyment. Also, the children’s area in the parks is fabulous and not to be taken for granted. I’m a very proud citizen since 1934.” Hedy
