FEDS HUNT MEN MISSING FROM SHIP ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS (Black Press)

A warrant has been issued for five men who went missing from a foreign freighter docked in Port Alberni. The men were reported missing to the RCMP by officials from the Port Alberni Shipping Corporation at approximately 3 a.m. July 27. The ship they were crewmen aboard was the Pakistani registered Chitral, which arrived in Port Alberni on Tuesday morning at 11:40 a.m. Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) issued the warrants on Wednesday, RCMP Cpl Dennis Suave said. The men are of Pakistani descent and are carrying valid passports, but didn’t have permission to leave the ship. The warrant is to “apprehend and question,” RCMP Cpl. Dennis Suave said. “Canada Border Service wants to find out what their intent of entry is.” Police have since confirmed that the men took a cab from Port Alberni and were driven to Nanaimo at approximately 8 p.m. on the evening of July 26. Two of the men were dropped of at the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal where they spent the night and caught the early morning ferry to Vancouver. The other three men were dropped off at the Duke Point Ferry terminal, where they managed to catch a ferry to Vancouver that night. The investigation has since been turned over to the CBSA. Upon its arrival the ship was checked by CBSA officials who reported nothing out of the ordinary, Suave said. The CBSA can’t release any specific details about the incident except to say that they are aware of the situation. “The Agency works closely with domestic and

POLICE PLAN HEAVIER PRESENCE AT FIREWORKS VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Police are beefing up security for the first major public event in the city since the Stanley Cup riot, while at the same time saying they have no reason to believe there will be any repeat of the chaos. The department has called in reinforcements from police forces across Metro Vancouver to put more officers on the streets for the Celebration of Light, a fireworks competition held on three nights, starting Saturday. Police presence will be stepped up by 25 to 30 per cent from past years, a decision made in consultation with the city and largely funded by event organizers. “There will be more police working than at fireworks nights in past years – both in Vancouver and on the transportation routes into the city,’’ Chief Jim Chu told reporters yesterday. “More police means we can more vigorously enforce liquor laws.’’ Chu has come under fire for the deployment of officers the night the Canucks lost the hockey final against the Boston Bruins. He’s steadfastly refused to state the number of cops on the street that night, citing strategic reasons, but critics say it clearly wasn’t enough. Both Chu and city officials have,

in part, blamed alcohol for fuelling crowds that rampaged through the downtown core, setting cars on fire, trashing business storefronts and looting. On Saturday, hundreds of police will patrol on the beaches, in boats on the water and from the air as fireworks are set off from a barge anchored in the city’s English Bay. That includes 75 officers from the RCMP and police departments in

Abbotsford, New Westminster, Delta, West Vancouver and Port Moody. Transit police, the BC Ambulance Service and Vancouver Fire and Rescue will also help keep an eye on the crowds. “There’s no doubt the events of June 15 had an effect and will continue to have an effect on how we plan for large major events in the city of Vancouver,’’ Const. Lindsey Houghton said in an interview.

Following the Stanley Cup riot, RCMP are stepping up efforts throughout Metro Vancouver for this weekend’s fireworks display in the city.

A woman has been fatally stabbed at the Sach Di Awaaz Newspaper at 8138 128 Street in Newton. At about 11:30 a.m. yesterday, a man burst into the newspaper brandishing a knife. Another man, who apparently came to the woman’s defense, suffered several lacerations as well. Surrey resident, Ravinder Bhangu, 24, died from her stab wounds. The suspect and the victim had been married since 2009.

A well-known offender got put back in the slammer less than a day after being released from prison. John Barry, 30, won his freedom early Wednesday morning. On information that he was trafficking cocaine, police began tailing him. They pulled over his car early yesterday morning and seized 40 grams of cocaine, police say. Barry faces charges for breaching his probation order, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and two charges of trafficking a controlled substance.

WEST NILE THREAT; RISING MOSQUITO POPULATION VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

B.C. residents are being warned to take precautions against mosquitoes that might be carrying the West Nile virus. The BC Centre for Disease Control says the mosquito population was kept in check by the cool spring, but the arrival of summer means its numbers are growing, particularly in the Okanagan and the Fraser Valley. The centre says people should be using repellents in the evening and early morning when mosquitoes are most active.

Elizabeth Denham said yesterday that the investigation will ensure that the program designed to measure energy consumption complies with the privacy law and Hydro’s obligations regarding collection, use, disclosure, retention and security of personal information. Denham said that rather than measuring energy use for each billing period as is currently the case, Smart Meters provide more frequent information about people’s electricity use. A Vancouver Island father has been charged with murder in the death of his seven-year-old son. RCMP say Brent Allen Warren of Campbell River, B.C., has made his first court appearance on the charge of first-degree murder. The 43-year-old was ordered to remain in custody until his next court appearance on Aug. 8. Police were called to the family’s home early Wednesday morning and found the boy with serious injuries. He was rushed to hospital, where he died.

A local professor and former federal Liberal candidate says a remark he made on Twitter calling the Vancouver Gay Pride Parade “vulgar” should not be taken as a homophobic remark. Shinder Purewal said his online post regarding his feelings on the parade pertained to any openly sexual displays, whether homosexual or heterosexual. “Even if it’s a woman and a man displaying that kind of sexuality in a parade, that’s not something we display on the streets,” Purewal said.

CANADIANS CAN NOW TEXT FAMINE RELIEF DONATIONS TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Canadians can now text in donations to support emergency relief work in the famine-ravaged Horn of Africa. The Red Cross has introduced the new option as a “quick and easy” way to help an estimated 11.3 million people who need aid across drought-hit regions in East Africa. Ottawa has said it will match every dollar Canadians give to a registered charity working in East Africa. That program is retroactive to July 6 and will run until Sept. 16, after which the government will decide how to allocate the funds. To date, Canada has contributed over $70 million this year to humanitarian

The Canadian arm of the international charity has committed $1 million to support relief efforts in Kenya and Somalia so far. The World Health Organization has warned that famine conditions in Somalia are likely to spread to more areas of the war-torn country as militant groups refuse to allow aid agencies to operate in some of the hardest-hit parts. Meanwhile, thousands of refugees continue to stream into camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, some walking for days or weeks to reach assistance.

Canadian fighter pilots are making some tough life-anddeath choices for rebels on the ground when they fly bombing missions over Libya. Lt.-Col. Daniel McLeod, the detachment commander for 409 Squadron in Trapani, Italy, says he recently witnessed a major battle between forces loyal to Gadhafi and advancing rebels. He says it was tough to tell the two sides apart, and because of that uncertainty he and his wingman were unable to bomb in support of the rebels.

Germany says a 10-month trial period of much criticized full-body scanners at one of its major airports will end this weekend as scheduled. The Interior Ministry said yesterday about 793,000 passengers at Hamburg airport voluntarily used the body scanners since October. It says the results will now be thoroughly analyzed before a decision on the scanners’ permanent use in German airports. The scanners – which produce an outline of passengers’ bodies beneath their clothes – have been tested at airports in Britain, the Netherlands and the U.S. but are opposed in much of Europe.

Cold War veterans who say they became ill after exposure to radiation during British nuclear weapons tests have won the right to sue the Defence Ministry. The Supreme Court yesterday granted the veterans permission to argue their right to seek damages from the government. Judges had previously rejected the veterans’ court bids, saying they didn’t have enough evidence to prove their illnesses resulted from exposure to radiation. The former servicemen argue that a low but significant dose of radiation during nuclear testing on Pacific Ocean islands in the 1950s resulted in illnesses including cancer, skin defects and arthritis.

Peru’s outgoing President Alan Garcia has broken with tradition and opted not to attend the inauguration of Ollanta Humala. Garcia quit Peru’s presidential palace yesterday morning an hour before his leftist successor was to be sworn in before Congress. The 62-year-old, pro-business Garcia announced several days earlier that he didn’t expect to attend the inauguration. He said it wasn’t out of disrespect for Humala but to prevent a recurrence of the unpleasantness of 1990, when his first term ended. Congress erupted in catcalls when Garcia then handed over power to Alberto Fujimori.

A man shot dead on a Tehran street by motorcycle-riding gunmen last weekend was a scientist involved in suspected Iranian attempts to make nuclear weapons and not a student as officially claimed, a foreign government official and a former UN nuclear inspector have told AP. The man was shot Saturday by a pair of gunmen firing from motorcycles in an attack similar to other recent assassinations of nuclear scientists that Iran blames on the U.S. and Israel. The International Atomic Energy Agency verified that the victim participated in developing high-voltage switches – a key component in triggering a nuclear warhead.

FOCUS OF NEW GOVT: ‘LABOUR REFORMS FOR BAILOUT FUNDS’ LISBON, Portugal (Associated Press)

Portugal’s five-week-old government took its first major proposal for labour reform to Parliament yesterday, seeking approval for a reduction in compensation entitlements for laid-off workers. The proposal is part of a long list of measures Portugal pledged to adopt in return for a 78 billion euros ($112 billion US) bailout that spared it from bankruptcy and was part of European efforts to contain the continent’s debt crisis. Portugal’s European partners and the International Monetary Fund Vitor Gaspar granted the bailout on condition it cuts public debt and takes steps to make its ailing economy more competitive. Lisbon is committed to a strict calendar of measures subject to quarterly reviews by outside monitors. Bailout funds could be withheld if targets are not met. Finance Minister Vitor Gaspar said the government intends to slash state spending by 10 per cent next year. The cuts will include a “drastic’’ reduction in the number of public bodies, he said. U.S. officials will be looking for clear signs that North Korea is serious about giving up its nuclear weapon programs in exchange for improved relations during two days of talks that began yesterday. The high-level meetings at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, in the shadow of the UN headquarters complex, have raised hopes of a possible breakthrough in resuming disarmament negotiations after more than a year of high tensions between the rival North and South. The discussions aim to build on last week’s talks between nuclear negotiators from North and South Korea in Indonesia, the first such meeting since disarmament talks were last held in December 2008. The arms talks collapsed shortly afterward. Seoul blames Pyongyang for two attacks last year that killed 50 South Koreans and led to threats of war. Ambassador Stephen Bosworth, the Obama administration’s top envoy on North Korean affairs, greeted North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan yesterday. They smiled and shook hands before a throng of cameramen, photographers and reporters.

Brown’s star, once tarnished because of his attack on Rihanna, is shining bright this year, and MTV has taken note. “He is having a moment with multiple hits this year, and he always delivers on the VMA stage,” said Amy Doyle, executive vice-president of music and talent at MTV, on Wednesday. Adele, who is nominated for seven VMAs, is also scheduled to perform. Only Katy Perry has more VMA nods with nine; Adele is tied with Kanye West with her seven. Doyle predicted Adele would “bring chills down everybody’s spine, if not bring them to tears, too.” Adele has the year’s bestselling album with 21, but Doyle notes that her live act hasn’t been seen much: Adele was forced to reschedule some concerts earlier this year because of a throat problem.

Emma Stone has gone from layperson to expert on the two publishing sensations she’s helping to bring to Hollywood this summer and next. Stone had not read Kathryn Stockett’s The Help before auditioning for the lead role in the drama about a white woman who rocks the Deep South establishment by chronicling the lives of black maids in the early 1960s. LEADING And before earning the female lead in LADY AT The Amazing Spider-Man, Stone knew LAST the Marvel Comics superhero mainly from Sam Raimi’s three past big-screen Spidey adventures and glimpses of the web-slinger on memorabilia. “I knew Spidey from Halloween costumes and Band-Aids and erasers and pencils and notebooks,” Stone, 22, said in an interview at last week’s ComicCon fan convention, where she and star Andrew Garfield joined the filmmakers to reveal footage of the 2012 summer blockbuster-in-waiting. “I knew that every little boy at school was obsessed with Spidey. I saw all the Sam Raimi movies, but I had not read the comics until I got involved. And now I’m a ridiculously enormous Spider-Man fan. That’s what ASSOCIATED PRESS happens. That character is one of the most incredible Emma Stone will return to screens next month with characters, I think, ever written, comic-book world The Help.

CHESNEY NEARS TOURING MILESTONE NASHVILLE (Associated Press)

Already secure as country music’s king of the road, Kenny Chesney is really flexing his muscle now. Chesney is poised to reach a milestone – and perhaps clear a path – as he readies for an Aug. 13 visit to New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. Chesney has already sold more than 44,000 tickets, making it the hottest single paid country show in the New York City-New Jersey area since Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Linda Ronstadt drew more than 51,000 in 1983. “I don’t know if taking a chance is the right word, but to be honest with you it was a little bit of a risk to play Meadowlands Stadium,” Chesney said. “But my whole touring life has been a risk. ... One day I said, ‘You know, I want to be able to say I played the New YorkNew Jersey area and I did it in a football stadium.’ We almost did it two years ago, and so now I felt like the time was right. I’m glad I was right.” Playing against the odds is paying off. The greater New York metropolitan area has tradition-

ally been a no-fly zone for country artists. But Chesney is matching artists like Jon Bon Jovi stride for stride in his home state and with other artists like Taylor Swift – who recently played in front of 52,000 fans in four sold-out arena shows in Newark, N.J. – is helping

show there’s room for a twang in the shadow of the Big Apple. Meadowlands CEO Mark Lamping expects Chesney’s show with Zac Brown Band, Billy Currington and Uncle Kracker to sell out at around 50,000 and notes the show could clear the way for more major country acts to play a market they once wrote off. “We’ve always believed in the show,” Lamping said. “We were perhaps a little anxious in the beginning because there hasn’t been a big (country) show here in a long time. But we were confident this would be a success and it’s been a success beyond what our original expectations were. It certainly gives us a lot of confidence to bring other shows to this market.” Chesney’s rise in the New York area coincides with a resurgence in the music touring business. After a rough 2010 thanks to the weakened economy, musicians are seeing an increase in gross revenue – if not ticket sales. Trade magazine Pollstar’s editor in chief, Gary Bongiovanni, says while ticket sales are still lagging behind, overall gross revenue is up both worldwide and in North America.

MAPLE LEAF FOODS Q2 PROFITS: $24 MILLION TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Maple Leaf Foods Inc.’s second-quarter earnings were nearly ďŹ ve times stronger than a year earlier as the food processor cut expenses and boosted prices to deal with rising costs like our and sugar. Maple Leaf reported yesterday its net earnings rose to $24.6 million, or 16 cents per share, from $4.9 million or two cents a share in the same period last year. Adjusted operating earnings were up to $77.5 million from $50.4 million, mostly due to improved performance in the company’s meat processing business. Adjusted earnings per share were 30 cents, up from 16 cents. Sales fell to $1.24 billion from $1.27 billion, affected mostly by the sale of some businesses.

1ST SALES INCREASE IN 4 YRS FOR MEGA BRANDS MONTREAL (Canadian Press)

Toy maker Mega Brands turned a proďŹ t in the second quarter as its toy sales grew and its troubled stationery and activities business posted its ďŹ rst gains in four years. The Montreal-based company reported that North American sales rose six per cent while international sales were up eight per cent. “It has been awhile since all of these performance indicators have all moved in a positive direction at once,’’ president and CEO Marc Bertrand said in a conference call. Mega Brands has had some good product and ďŹ nancial results to crow about after several recalls of its magnetic toys reduced sales and nearly forced the company into bankruptcy. The company hopes to be back to $500 million US of annual revenues within four years.

B.C. Lions’ Tim Brown (35) runs against Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Jerry-Ralph Jules (29) in second half CFL action in Winnipeg yesterday. Winnipeg defeated B.C. 25-20.

LIONS LOSE GAME AGAINST GRIEVING BOMBERS WINNIPEG (Canadian Press)

Justin Palardy kicked four field goals and Alex Brink threw a touchdown pass in relief of injured quarterback Buck Pierce as the grieving Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the winless B.C. Lions 25-20 yesterday night. A sold-out crowd of 29,533 at Canad Inns Stadium took in the game, which was dedicated to coach Richard Harris. The beloved Bomber defensive line and assistant head coach died of a heart attack Tuesday afternoon. Both teams stood together at midfield before the game for a moment of silence and video tribute to the six-year Bomber coach, who began his CFL

coaching career in 2001 with the Lions. As Bomber players headed to their sideline, many raised a hand or pumped a fist toward Harris’s photo on the jumbotron. Winnipeg leads the CFL East Division with a 4-1 record, matching its best start since 2003. Montreal (3-1) can regain a share of first as it travels to play Hamilton (2-2) Friday night. The Lions last opened the season 0-5 in 1996, when they finally got their first win on their sixth try. The Lions started last season 1-8, but rallied seven wins over their last 10 games to make the playoffs as a cross-over team. They lost to Grey Cup champion Montreal in the East semifinal.

HANSEN SIGNS THREE-YEAR DEAL VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Time was as important as money for Vancouver Canuck forward Jannik Hansen. The Canucks avoided salary arbitration with Hansen by signing him to a $4.05million US, three-year deal yesterday. Hansen said he wanted an NHL contract that gave him some long-term security. CANUCKS “The main thing was to make sure I got a deal that was a little longer,’’ he told reporters during a telephone conference call. “I was looking for something more than one year. Once we figured that one out, it was more a matter of getting the numbers in.’’ Laurence Gilman, Vancouver’s assistant general manager, said Hansen brings “significant attributes’’ to the team. “He’s an above average skater Jannik Hansen and he likes the physical elements of the game,’’ said Gilman. “He can hit. He thrives on the forecheck and he can kill penalties.’’ The 25-year-old from Herlev, Denmark, scored nine goals and added 20 assists in 82 games last year, mostly playing on the third line. His 29 points was a career high. In 25 playoff games, Hansen had three goals and six assists. So far this summer the Canucks have resigned Kevin Bieksa, Sami Salo and Chris Higgins. Their biggest freeagent signing was forward Marco Sturm.

PAGE BREAKS BAUMANN’S RECORD MONTREAL (Canadian Press)

Alec Page of Victoria broke Alex Baumann’s 30-year-old junior record in the 400-metre individual medley Thursday at the Canadian age group swimming championships. Page, racing in the 15-17 age group, finished in four minutes 20.67 seconds to eclipse Baumann’s time of 4:22.39 set in 1981. Baumann, a double Olympic champion at the 1984 Olympic Games, still holds the 200 IM junior mark as well as the 1,500 freestyle record in the 13-14 age group set in 1979. “I’m pretty excited about the record,’’ said Page, 17, who met Baumann last week in a medal ceremony at Summer Nationals. “It was something I was really hoping for. I really improved Alec Page everything tonight. Every stroke was faster.’’ In the girls 100 freestyle for 14-year-olds, Paige Kremer of Edmonton broke the 13-14 age group national record clocking 56.55 seconds for the win. The previous mark was 56.69 set by Lauren Earp of Toronto in 2009.

Reggie Bush is bound for the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins finalized a trade for Bush yesterday by negotiating a new two-year contract for nearly $10 million US with him, a person familiar with the talks said. It wasn’t known what the Saints would receive in the trade. The former Heisman Trophy win-

Swimming | Canada’s Brent Hayden took the silver medal at the men’s 100-metre freestyle at the world championships yesterday. ner is due about $11.8 million US this season – the final year of his current contract – and it would be difficult for the Saints to justify paying that for him given salary cap constraints. The Dolphins seek a running back to pair with second-round draft choice Daniel Thomas. Last year’s leading rushers, Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, are free Reggie Bush agents. While Bush has been paid handsomely since signing his six-year rookie contract worth up to $62 million, his pro career has never

reached the heights he and many fans expected when he was selected second overall in the 2006 draft. Bush has had his share of highlight-reel touchdowns on punt returns, receptions and runs. However, he has never been to a Pro Bowl or even rushed for as much as 600 yards in a season. Last season he missed eight games, and during the other eight games was used as a role player, with only 36 carries for 150 yards and just 34 receptions for 208 yards.

MENTOR OF SLAIN AL-QAIDA LEADER SENTENCED TO 5 YRS AMMAN, Jordan (Associated Press)

The mentor of slain al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was convicted yesterday of aiding the Afghan Taliban and sentenced to five years in prison in Jordan. The Palestinian-born Isam Mohammed Taher al-Barqawi, better known as Sheik Abu Mohammed al-Maqdisi, was found guilty of “plotting terrorism’’ and recruiting militants in Jordan to join the Taliban in Afghanistan. He was tried in a military court with three other Jordanian Palestinians. Al-Maqdisi, whom al-Zarqawi often praised in Internet writings, shouted at the judges as the ruling was handed down. “You are convicting us of wrongdoing for something that our religion condones, which is standing by fellow Muslims against the American occupiers of Muslim land in Afghanistan,’’ he said, raising his right arm and pointing his finger at the three-man tribunal. The slain al-Qaida in Iraq leader had described al-Maqdisi as his mentor. The two men shared a cell block between 1995 and 1999, after which al-Zarqawi was released under a special amnesty by Jordan’s king and went on to lead al-Qaida in Iraq until he was killed by a U.S. airstrike in 2006.
