HACKING SCHEME HITS CANADA
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Computer security company McAfee has issued a report detailing a five-year hacking scheme that targeted countries, companies and numerous organizations. McAfee says there were more than 70 intrusions from the same source over the past five years, including four in Canada. The earliest, in July 2008, targeted an unidentified Canadian information technology company for four months, then the Montreal-based World Anti-Doping Agency was infiltrated for 14 months in August 2009. McAfee says two unidentified Canadian government agencies were targeted – the first in October 2009 for six months and the second in January 2010 for one month. It says the governments of the U.S., Taiwan, India, South Korea and Vietnam were also on the target list, along with the IOC, the United Nations and an array of companies. The report author, Dmitri Alperovitch, says most victims have long since addressed the infections and the report is meant to reinforce the fact that anyone can fall prey to intrusions. McAfee has dubbed the scheme Operation Shady RAT, with RAT being a common acronym in the computer industry meaning Remote Access Tool. The Montreal-based World Anti-Doping Agency – one of the organizations cited as a target – says it “has yet to be convinced” that it was one of four Canadian operations targeted in the international hacking scam.

PENTICTON ASSAULT SUSPECT CAUGHT
PENTICTON (Canadian Press)
The RCMP say a man being sought on a Canadawide warrant for an alleged sexual assault in Penticton, B.C., has been arrested. The force says David Wesley Bobbitt was arrested in Osoyoos without incident, thanks to a tip from the public. The RCMP says early Wednesday evening, an orchardist near Oliver, B.C., noted someone setting up camp on his property and told him to leave.
As the man left, the orchardist recognized the man as Bobbitt and called an off-duty RCMP officer friend, who alerted his colleagues. An uniformed officer arrived and arrested Bobbitt as he walked along Highway 97 near Osoyoos. Police began searching for a suspect after a brutal attack last weekend on a 22-year-old Penticton woman, who was found Sunday bound, severely beaten and sexually assaulted inside a second-hand store. The attack, which allegedly continued upwards of 12 hours, took place in front of her 22-month-old son, who was not harmed. The woman remains in hospital recovering from severe head, facial and other injuries suffered during the ordeal.

COP IN BOTCHED ECSTASY CASE FACES CHARGES IN SURREY 6 PROBE MARTIN VAN DEN HEMEL (Richmond Review)
The RCMP officer who was lambasted by a Richmond provincial court judge over a botched ecstasy lab investigation, is one of the Mounties now facing criminal charges in connection with a high-profile murder case in Surrey. In tossing out all evidence gathered by police in January 2007 at a massive Raymond Avenue ecstasy lab, Richmond provincial court Judge Paul R. Meyers put the blame on RCMP Cpl. Danny Michaud, who was in charge of the investigation. “The RCMP officer in charge of the investigation was Cpl. Michaud and he must accept the respon-
sibility for leading an investigation that ignored and flaunted the accuseds’ Charter of Rights, and did so consistently over a 14 month period,” Judge Meyers wrote in a June ruling. Michaud was charged in June with breach of trust and attempting to obstruct justice in the Surrey Six multiple murder case, where six people were murdered in a Surrey condo in October of 2007. Michaud is also accused of attempting to mislead Ontario Provincial Police investigators, who were conducting an internal investigation into allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a potential witness in the case. Three other Mounties were also charged. In the ecstasy ruling last week, Judge Meyers tossed out all evidence seized by police from the ecstasy lab

When time already spent in custody is counted, 45-year-old Rodolfo Gonzalez-Hernandez will serve 4.5 years for the November 2009 attack, far less than the 18-year sentence the Crown had asked for. The 40-year-old victim has undergone successful reconstruction surgery but lacks any sense of smell or taste, or any feeling in her nose.

OFFICIALS EYE MONDAY RETURN FOR MTL. TUNNEL MONTREAL (Canadian Press)
Transport officials in Quebec are hoping a Montreal tunnel that has been closed since a massive chunk of concrete smashed onto a highway will reopen by Monday. That’s when Quebec’s traditional construction holidays end and traffic in Montreal will become far busier than it has been in the last two weeks. Speaking in Montreal yesterday, Transport Minister Sam Hamad said the collapse of a 25-ton chunk of concrete last Sunday was related to construction work that was taking place at the time.

HARPER QUESTIONS NDP COMMITMENT TO CANADA HAMILTON, Ont. (Canadian Press)
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is questioning the NDP’s commitment to Canada following revelations that interim leader Nycole Turmel is a former cardcarrying member of the separatist Bloc Quebecois. Joining the chorus of criticism against Turmel, Harper said yesterday that Canadians expect that any political party that wants to run the country be “unequivocally committed” to it. Turmel confirmed Tuesday that she was a member of the Bloc for more than four years before returning her membership in January, a few months before the federal election. She also said she was a member of provincial sovereigntist group Quebec Solidaire, but plans to send her card back. While Turmel says she’s never been a separatist, Harper says he thinks Canadians will be disappointed to hear of her association with the groups. Turmel was named last week as Jack Layton’s replacement while he fights cancer. Harper made the comments yesterday after

It took six firefighters to remove the hefty reptile, which has been reunited with its owner.

A small town in Provence has found an unusual way to attract more vacationing families to its sun-drenched white sand beach: ban smoking from one stretch of its Mediterranean sea front. The smoking ban came into effect earlier this summer, and compliance among the Gaulloise-puffing public at the packed beach has surprised even the city official who came up with the idea, the deputy mayor Noel Collura. Visitors at the Plage Lumiere beach pass under a large sign reminding them that smoking is off limits, and two ashtrays attached to the sign invite them to stub out their butts.
Police in Oslo are setting up a special unit to investigate the twin attacks that killed 77 people. Anders Behring Breivik has confessed to setting off a bomb in the capital and to a massacre at a youth camp. But, many questions remain, including how Breivik financed the attacks and with whom he was in contact. Breivik has claimed to belong to a shadowy group of modern-day crusaders against Islam, with cells all over Europe. Police attorney Paal-Fredrik Hjort Kraby said yesterday that police are particularly interested in any bank accounts Breivik may have opened.
Chinese rights advocates are calling for the release of an Internet activist who will soon face trial in a case that they say highlights the government’s fear of increasingly bold public activism. Supporters say Wang Lihong, 56, represents a growing breed of Internet-empowered Chinese activists – ordinary people who mobilize others to fight corruption. They say Wang is being punished for joining a street protest against the prosecution of three bloggers. Wang is expected to be tried in several weeks for “creating a disturbance” and will plead not guilty. If convicted, she faces five years in jail.

‘BOMB’ STRAPPED TO TEEN WAS A HOAX: POLICE SYDNEY, Australia (Associated Press)
A suspicious device that had been attached to a Sydney teenage girl’s neck contained no explosives and appeared to be part of an elaborate hoax, Australian police said yesterday. In a scene that could have been straight from a Hollywood thriller, bomb squad specialists worked for 10 horrifying hours to free 18-year-old Madeleine Pulver from a bomb-like device she said was chained to her neck by a man in disguise who entered her suburban Sydney home in the afternoon. We had to treat it seriously until we could prove otherwise and that’s exactly what we did and that’s why it took so long.” Murdoch said the device had been attached to the girl “by a chain or something similar,” which took officers a long time to remove. He declined to describe the disguise the attacker wore. The drama began on Wednesday afternoon (local

MALAWI’S PRESIDENT UNDER SIEGE AFTER DEADLY PROTESTS JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Associated Press)
Malawians overwhelmingly re-elected their president two years ago. Now Bingu wa Mutharika’s security forces are blamed for killing at least 19 anti-government demonstrators, and the increasingly combative leader is facing international condemnation. The 77-year-old former World Bank official once heralded by economic analysts has declared Malawi “a black country for black people.” And a British diplomat whom Mutharika expelled from the country describes the president as “becoming ever more autocratic and intolerant of criticism.” Bingu wa Mutharika It’s an unlikely turn for a man who won close to 65 per cent of the vote in an election in May 2009. In April, Mutharika expelled Britain’s High Commissioner to Malawi, after he was quoted in a local newspaper expressing concern about the president’s intolerance of criticism and about deteriorating human rights. British envoy Fergus Cochrane-Dyet was given 48 hours to leave the country. Former ruler Britain subsequently suspended aid to Malawi. The European Union, Germany and Norway have also halted assistance to Malawi for similar reasons.

SYRIAN TANKS STORM HAMA UNDER SHELLING
June as residents turned on the regime and blockaded the streets against encroaching tanks. But Syrian security forces backed by tanks and snipers launched a ferocious military offensive that left corpses in streets Sunday, tightening their siege on Hama and sending residents fleeing for their lives. The death toll has reached around 100, but the exact figure is difficult to verify. The regime may be thinking that regaining control of Hama will blunt the uprising, which is in its fifth month and has so far proved remarkably resilient.

Syrian tanks stormed Hama under heavy shelling yesterday, taking over a main square at the heart of the restive city and cutting off electricity, water and phone lines on the fourth day of an offensive. Opposition figures and activists accused the regime of striking hard at a moment when world and media attention were distracted by the trial in Egypt of former President Hosni Mubarak. “Hama is being colPEACEFUL Syrian tanks lectively punished for PROTESTS stormed Hama its peaceful protests PUNISHED under heavy shelling calling for the downfall yesterday, taking of Bashar Assad,” said over a main square Suheir Atassi, a prominent at the heart of the pro-democracy activist. BUCHANAN TRIES TO CLARIFY ‘YOUR BOY’ COMMENT
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Pat Buchanan said that he didn’t mean to slur President Barack Obama by referring to him as “your boy” during a discussion with Al Sharpton. The former GOP presidential candidate and current MSNBC analyst appeared on Morning Joe yesterday to explain remarks he made on that network’s Sharpton show 12 hours earlier. They were discussing Obama’s political strength when Buchanan said that “your boy” had caved in past negotiations and was likely to do so in the future. “My what?” Sharpton responded. “My president, Barack Obama? What did you say?” Buchanan, using a boxing analogy, answered that Obama was “your boy in the ring.” “He’s nobody’s boy,” Sharpton said. “He’s your president, he’s my president, and that’s what you have to get through your head.” During his appearance yesterday, Buchanan said he wanted to clarify what he had said during a “spirited discussion.” “Some folks took what I said as some kind of a slur,” Buchanan said. “None was meant, none was intended, none was delivered.”

LOST HITCHCOCK FILM DISCOVERED IN N.Z. LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)
Alfred Hitchcock is still surprising his fans. Film preservationists said yesterday they’ve found the first half of the earliest known surviving feature film on which Hitchcock has a credit: a silent melodrama called The White Shadow. The first three reels of the six-reel film, made in 1923, were discovered by the National Film Preservation Foundation at the New Zealand Film Archive. The White Shadow was directed by Graham Cutts, and the 24-year-old Hitchcock was credited as writer, assistant director, editor and art director. Hitchcock made his own directing debut two years later with the chorus-girl melodrama The Pleasure Garden. He went on to direct such suspense classics as Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window and Vertigo. The White Shadow is a “missing link, one of those few productions where we are able to bridge that gap of Hitchcock, the young guy with all these ideas, and Hitchcock the filmmaker,” said David Sterritt, author of The Films of Alfred Hitchcock. “Even though he didn’t direct it, he was all over it.” Foundation Director Annette Melville said the three White Shadow reels – about 30 minutes – were found among films donated to the archive by the family of New Zealand projectionist and collector Jack Murtagh. No other copy of The White Shadow is known to exist.
The film stars Betty Compson in a dual role as twin sisters, one angelic and the other “without a soul,” according to Melville. “At the time, people said the plot was improbable. I’m putting a polite spin on it. Many said it was ridiculous,” Melville said. “It’s a totally crazy, zany plot with soul migration back and forth and all these improbable meetings.” A restored print of “The White Shadow” will be shown Sept. 22 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences headquarters in Beverly Hills.

HERZOG, SPURLOCK COMING TO TIFF WITH NEW DOCS
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Werner Herzog’s examination of a triple homicide in Texas, Morgan Spurlock’s look at Comic-Con and Nick Broomfield’s quest to learn more about politician Sarah Palin are among the documentaries coming to the Toronto International Film Festival. Documentary programmer Thom Powers said he was thrilled at the number of veteran filmmakers who will be screening their works at this year’s festival, which runs Sept. 8 to 18. Herzog – who showed the acclaimed Cave of Forgotten Dreams at last year’s fest – probes the psyche of a death-row inmate in Into the Abyss, while Super Size Me director Spurlock’s Comic-Con: Episode IV – A Fan’s Hope looks at the success of the annual San Diego pop culture fair. Broomfield, who has previously turned his lens on subjects including Courtney Love and Margaret Thatcher, travels to Wasilla, Alaska in Sarah Palin You Betcha! The festival is making a strong commitment to documentaries this year. Last week, organizers announced that Toronto’s annual movie extravaganza would open with a doc, Davis Guggenheim’s look at Irish U2 entitled From the Sky Down.

CROWE CAPTIVATED BY ST. JOHN’S
GAY AND LESBIAN GROUP BOOSTS ABC FAMILY
ST. JOHN’S, N.L. (Canadian Press)
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
The advocacy group GLAAD rated ABC Family as “excellent” in its portrayal of gay and lesbian characters, only the second television network to get such a designation in the five years the group has monitored television content. ABC Family was cited for both a large number of gay characters and the way those characters fit into the shows. The only other network judged “excellent” by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation was MTV last year. “We’re incredibly proud to be honoured and acknowledged by GLAAD,” said Michael Riley, ABC Family’s chief executive. “It’s very important for us.” The network’s young audience expects the nation’s diversity to be reflected in the programming, he said. ABC Family’s popular Pretty Little Liars features a lesbian. The Secret Life of the American Teenager also had several gay and lesbian characters in the past year. Make It or Break It has a recurring character who is a bisexual. Greek has had four GLAAD Media Award nominations, and included the love story of a gay fraternity brother.

Leave it to the frontman of Great Big Sea to lure one of Hollywood’s biggest catches to Newfoundland. Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe is in St. John’s this week, joining East Coast rocker Alan Doyle to celebrate the release of their nine-song digital-only album The Crowe/Doyle Songbook Volume III. The duo are scheduled to perform two gigs, but Crowe won’t be limited to crooning duty while he’s in town. He’s also been filming a guest appearance on CBC-TV’s Republic of Doyle, which has begun shooting its third season. Crowe and Allan Hawco – the show’s producer and star – have been friends for more than a decade, while Hawco and Doyle have developed a strong friendship as fellow Newfoundlanders in the entertainment business (the fact that the singer’s surname also appears in the title of Hawco’s TV show is simply a coincidence). When Hawco learned that Crowe would be coming to the island, he couldn’t resist the opportunity to snag him for an appearance. “The very idea of having someone like Russell (on the show) is
obviously insane,” Hawco said. “Everything had to go perfect in order to be able to co-ordinate all the events for Russell to get here.” Crowe said his trip East was necessitated by an injury to his musical writing partner Doyle. “Earlier this year we had some

dates set up to do some shows in Los Angeles, and Al ruptured himself and had to have surgery, so we had to cancel those dates,” Crowe said. “The other option that we had sort of got sucked up by a job that I took on. “So then there was this little gap in the traffic ... Emails started going backwards and forwards, and over a month and a half or two months, it just came together.” The pairing of one of Newfoundland’s biggest mainstream musicians and one of film’s most notable leading men originally happened at the NHL Awards ceremony in Toronto seven years ago. Doyle sought out Crowe after learning that the actor was a Great Big Sea fan. “In 1998 I was making a movie in (Alberta) with a bunch of Canadians,” said Crowe. “(Actor) Kevin Durand gave me a Great Big Sea CD, and then I went and bought another one, and Great Big Sea became a favourite band of mine. “Alan met me backstage (at the awards), and we had a little chat and set up a date to go to the Molson Amphitheatre where Great Big Sea was doing a show. It was after that show that we started talking about (a collaboration).” ADD YOUR

MERGERS AT STRONGEST LEVELS SINCE CRISIS: PWC TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Canadian companies have reportedly had their strongest season of mergers and acquisitions since the credit crisis began in 2008. Consultancy PwC says there were 836 mergers and acquisitions in Canada in the second quarter, worth about $57 billion US. PwC says that so far this year there have been 16 “mega deals worth $1 billion US or more. Real estate mergers and acquisitions outpaced other sectors in the quarter, with Canadian companies inking a total of 90 deals worth nearly $10 billion. PwC says the number of deals should start slowing because of current market instability but adds that Canada will still do better than other developed countries.

PREDATORS SHEA WEBER WINS $7.5 MILLION IN ARBITRATION
NASHVILLE (Associated Press)
An arbitrator has awarded Nashville defenceman Shea Weber $7.5 million US for the upcoming season, and Predators general manager David Poile says it’s proof their captain is one of the best in the NHL. “Shea, by this award, certainly got recognized as one of the top, if not the best defenceman in all of the National Hockey League,” Poile said in a conference call yesterday shortly after the arbitrator’s ruling. Weber won the highest award handed out in NHL arbitration and made him the fifth-highest paid defenceman in the League. Poile said that they negotiated hard with Weber’s agents talking everything from a one-year contract to a multi-year deal but couldn’t agree on the term, length or structure. The Predators chose to take the Norris Trophy finalist and team captain to arbitration, and the arbitrator heard arguments Tuesday in a hearing in Toronto. The Predators argued that Weber was due $4.75 million, while Weber’s agents countered with $8.5 million. “We will continue to work on a longer term con-
tract once the season gets started,” Poile said. Weber will be a restricted free agent after the 2011-12 season. He had 48 points in 82 games last season in helping Nashville reach the Western Conference semifinals for the first time. He’s a two-time allstar and helped Canada win the Olympic gold medal in the 2010 Olympics. “It is nice to get this arbitration process out of the way for now and hopefully this can lead to further negotiations between my agents and the Predators,” Weber said on the conference call. “Hopefully we can get something done longterm, but for now a one-year deal is done, and I am excited to get ready for the season. I am happy to be a Nashville Predator.” Weber called the process draining. But he said he does think that the Predators’ owners and Poile are committed to winning and are trying to fill in the pieces needed after losing to Vancouver in the conference semifinals in six games. “Now it is just get ready for the season,” Weber said. Poile remains optimistic of landing Weber to a longer deal. The Predators also have goaltender Pekka Rinne and defenceman Ryan Suter due to become unrestricted free agents July 1, 2012.

TICATS SEND RECEIVER BRUCE TO B.C. LIONS VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Veteran receiver Arland Bruce is heading west. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats sent Bruce to the B.C. Lions yesterday for a thirdround draft pick in 2012 and an additional conditional selection. Bruce has played 146 career games over 11 CFL seasons and was in his third campaign in Hamilton after being dealt there by the Toronto Argonauts. In 34 games with the Ticats, Bruce had 169 catches for 2,450 yards and 17 touchdowns. Bruce, who is under contract through 2012, has recorded 611 career receptions for 9,416 yards and 76 touchdowns but struggled this season with Hamilton (3-2), registering just nine catches for 104 yards and no TDs. The Lions and Ticats had been talking trade of late but it was more for receiver Maurice Mann, who has missed the last two games with a foot injury, as well as receiver/returner Marquay McDaniel. Bruce, who earns a hefty six-figure salary, has been hampered by a leg injury this season. But improving the receiving corps was a priority for the Lions – the CFL’s only winless team at 0-5 – because the team has been plagued thus far with dropped passes. Bruce, 33, had a stellar 2010 campaign, finishing third overall in receiving with 86 catches for 1,303 yards and eight TDs in helping Hamilton post a 9-9 record and end up second in the East Division standings. Bruce began his CFL career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2001 and registered 115 catches for 1,880 yards and 19 touchdowns over two seasons.

FORMER NFL STAR TURNED ACTOR BUBBA SMITH DIES LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)
Former NFL defensive star Bubba Smith, who found a successful second career as an actor, died yesterday in Los Angeles at age 66. Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter said Smith was found dead at his Baldwin Hills home. Winter said he didn’t know the circumstances or cause of death. Police spokesman Richard French added the death does not appear to be suspicious. The top overall pick in the 1967 draft after a sensational career at Michigan State, Smith spent five seasons with the Baltimore Colts and two seasons each with Oakland and Houston. He won the 1971 Super Bowl with the Colts. Bubba Smith One of the most feared defensive ends in the game, Smith often drew two blockers, yet was effective enough to make two Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team.

VENEZUELA’S CHAVEZ TO BEGIN NEW PHASE OF CHEMOTHERAPY CARACAS, Venezuela (Associated Press)
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said yesterday that he will start another round of chemotherapy soon and that he expects to become bald within days due to his cancer treatment. Chavez said he and his doctors were considering whether he should return to Cuba for his second phase of chemotherapy or receive the treatment in Venezuela. He spent a week in Cuba last month for his first round of chemotherapy, and he appeared on television with a close-shaved head on Monday saying his hair had begun to fall out. “In the coming hours, I should being the second phase of chemotherapy,” Chavez said in a telephone call aired live on state television. “My hair continues to fall out. I’m going to be totally bald in a few days, with my new look,” Chavez said. The 57-year-old president says the treatment aims to ensure that malignant cells don’t reappear after he underwent a June 20 surgery in Cuba that removed a cancerous tumour from his pelvic region. He has not specified where the tumour was located or with what type of cancer he was diagnosed.
tor read the charges against Mubarak – that he was an accomplice along with his then-interior minister in the “intentional and premeditated murder of peaceful protesters” and that he and his sons received gifts from a prominent businessman in return for guaranteeing him a lowered price in a land deal with the state. “Yes, I am here,” Mubarak said from his bed, raising his hand slightly when the judge asked him to identify himself and enter a plea. “I deny all these accusations completely.”
An ailing, 83-year-old Hosni Mubarak, lying ashen-faced on a hospital bed inside a metal defendants cage with his two sons standing protectively beside him in white prison uniforms, denied charges of corruption and complicity in the killing of protesters at the start of his historic trial yesterday. The spectacle, aired live on state television, was a stunning moment for Egyptians. Many savoured the humiliation of the man who ruled with unquestionable power for 29 years, during which opponents were tortured, corruption was rife, poverty spread and political life was stifled. After widespread skepticism that Egypt’s military rulers would allow one of their own – a former head of the air force – to be prosecuted in front of the world, the scene went a long way to satisfy one of the key demands that has united protesters since Feb. 11, when Mubarak fell following an 18-day uprising. “This is the dream of Egyptians, to see him like this, humiliated like he humiliated them for the last 30 years,” said Ghada Ali, the mother of a 17-year old girl in the
city of Alexandria who was shot to death during the crackdown. “I want to see their heart explode like my daughter’s heart exploded from their single bullet,” Ali told The Associated Press, breaking down in sobs. It was the first time Egyptians have seen Mubarak since Feb. 10, when he gave a defiant TV address refusing to resign. In the courtroom, a prosecu-
