MARKETS DROP AMID U.S. CREDIT RATING FALLOUT
WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON (Alberni Valley News)
The Toronto stock market tumbled almost 500 points yesterday after an unprecedented credit rating downgrade of U.S. government debt by Standard and Poor’s helped give added momentum to a four-week-old selloff. The move Friday evening by S&P served to further dent confidence that American and European leaders can stem worsening economic conditions and deal with a European government debt crisis. The S&P/TSX composite index fell 491.21 points or four per cent to 11,670.96 its lowest close in a year and the biggest one-day drop since December 1, 2008 when markets were still reeling from the near collapse of the financial sector. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 129.21 points to 1,682.29. S&P cited the damage done to the U.S. reputation over the controversy surrounding the debt ceiling and concerns that underlying public finances are on an unsusDLN 5952

New York markets also fell hard with the Dow industrials plunging 634.76 points to 10,809.85.
The Nasdaq fell 174.72 points to 2,357.69 while the S&P 500 index lost 79.92 points to 1,119.46. Investors were unimpressed with remarks from U.S. President Barack Obama early in the afternoon where he essentially dismissed the S&P downgrade. He tried to reassure investors and the public that the nation’s leaders need only show more “common sense and compromise” to tame a staggering accumulation of debt.

Jaeger Mah received more than twice the number of votes of his nearest competitor to win the Live At YVR contest. The Vancouver Airport Authority announced Mah as the contest winner yesterday. Mah received more than 4,128 votes. Contestant Sarah Szloboda was second with 1,916 votes. The self-proclaimed “Anderson Cooper of YVR” starts his assignment on Aug. 17. Mah will spend 80 days at YVR finding stories and shooting short documentary films about them. Mah’s winnings also include $15,000 in prize money and a $50 per day stipend for the duration of the contest. Mah spent the week leading up to the vote envisioning how he will spend his 80 days. He keeps a journal, in which he was already jotted down more than 100 documentary ideas. And he’s made a logistical list that includes equipment needed, people to interview, and shot selection. “I’m rolling out how the next 80 days will go before they even start,” Mah said. He is turning to the Internet, and especially his home community, for documentary ideas. “I want the people of Port Alberni to send me their good and bad YVR stories, or let me know if they worked at YVR back in the day,” Mah said. “I want to see if I can find one Port Alberni angle.” Mah’s e-mail is jaegermah@gmail.com.

B.C.’s plan to fund nicotine patches and gum for smokers has been lauded by the Canadian Cancer Society and other health organizations, but the program has its detractors. Public feedback since the program was announced in May include a variety of criticisms, according to documents released by Premier Christy Clark’s office under freedom of information legislation. The program is set to start Sept. 30. It will provide people up to 12 weeks’ supply of over-the-counter nicotine gum or patches, or prescription pills approved by the Pharmacare program. The government estimates it will cost $15-25 million a year, depending on how many smokers sign up. “As a physician, I am a bit ambivalent about your decision to fund nicotine replacement, as along with the drug there is also need for counselling and follow-up,” said one response posted on B.C.’s new open information website. Others objected to the decision to spend millions on nicotine replacement, while diabetics and other chronic disease patients have to pay to treat conditions they did not bring upon themselves. A Kelowna resident cited
the example of treatment for his wife’s sleep apnea, including $100 a month in medicine and $2,000 for a machine recommended by her family doctor and cardiologist. “I honestly believe it is outright wrong to pay for this when smokers made a choice to start smoking and continue to make a choice every time they light up,” he said. A former smoker who quit before nicotine replacement was
available also objected. “I realize (nicotine replacement) is expensive, but so are cigarettes,” the ex-smoker wrote. “If a person is desirous of quitting, then don’t buy cigarettes, buy the patch instead.” The health ministry estimates that more than 6,000 B.C. residents die from tobacco use each year. Tobaccorelated illnesses cost an estimated $2.3 billion a year, $605 million of which is direct health-care costs.

A Richmond man has been charged with second degree murder in connection with a woman’s death in Vancouver on June 10. Richmond’s Anthony Blake Cruz, 28, was arrested Friday in Richmond without incident. The victim, Jessica Eguia-Cornejo, 36, was found inside a Vancouver apartment and according to investigators had met with foul play. She had recently moved to Vancouver from Peru in mid-2008.
METRO VANCOUVER MAN ATTACKED BY BEAR TRI-CITY NEWS (Black Press)
A man was attacked by a bear in Anmore and taken to Eagle Ridge Hospital early Monday with minor injuries but later released. The man was reportedly walking his dog near Countryside Village mobile home park when a female bear started towards him and clawed him after he dove down into an embankment. Conservation officers were called to the scene at 7 a.m. and shot the female bear. They later captured three cubs that will be taken to a wildlife refuge for rehabilitation.

SEX PARTNERS URGED TO DISCLOSE INFECTIONS VIA E-CARDS JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)
It’s an Internet greeting card no one really wants to receive. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control is promoting a free online service that helps break the news to former sex partners that you may have given them a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Users of the inSPOT service can send anonymous e-cards via email to up to six partners warning them that they should get tested. Recipients get a link to information on how and where to get testing. The site, www.inspot.org, also offers information on STIs. Dr. Mark Gilbert at the BCCDC said notifications are critical to combatting and preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia,
gonorrhea and HIV. “Anyone can use inSPOT. It doesn’t require visitors to login or register to use the service,” he said. “It’s free, simple and easy to use.” Users select an e-card with one of several different messages, enter the partner’s email address and can also add a personal message. “Sometimes there are strings attached,” reads one of the e-cards. Another says: “It’s not what you brought to the party, it’s what you left with. I left with an STI. You might have, too.” The service has been implemented in other North American cities after being developed in 2004 in San Francisco. InSPOT stands for Internet Notification Service for Partners or Tricks.
PILE-DRIVING TO STABILIZE LEANING HYDRO TOWER JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)
BC Hydro crews are this week driving piles next to a high-voltage transmission tower along the Fraser River in Surrey that was destabilized by high water in June. The same erosion by the river caused a nearby tower supporting a different power line to fall July 4, triggering a large-scape power outage and forcing the closure of the Port Mann Bridge and other roads near the Cape Horn interchange where wires were dangling dangerously. Workers will drive eight 100-foot-long steel piles 36 feet into the river bed around the footings of the tower.

The MLA for Saanich South says she’s been forced to close her office for several days because of smoke and water damage sustained during a weekend fire. New Democrat Lana Popham says 12 firefighters responded with three vehicles Saturday night after smoke was reported on the building’s roof, where roofers had been hard at work earlier. Popham says no files or works of art donated by community members were damaged in the blaze. She says a remediation team began cleaning up the mess yesterday.

The reigning champ, Toronto’s Eamon Clark, squared off Friday against Patrick McMurray, also of Toronto, before a packed house at the Tyne Valley community centre. McMurray was the first to shuck the required 18 Malpeque oysters with a time of one minute and 20 seconds – an unconfirmed record at the annual event.

Lawyers for Guinean immigrant Nafissatou Diallo filed the lawsuit yesterday in state court in the Bronx. They seek unspecified damages. President Robert Mugabe also reiterated his call for early elections to end the country’s fractious coalition government and called some of his opponents “demon-possessed sellouts” who turn to the West for help. “Today is the day to cast out those Robert Mugabe demons,” said Mugabe, who gave a fiery address during celebrations honouring the guerrilla war that swept him to power at independence in 1980. HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS COULD DIE IN SOMALI FAMINE: U.S. DADAAB, Kenya (Associated Press)
RALEIGH, N.C. (Associated Press)
A concert event organized by atheist, agnostic and other non-theist soldiers has been cleared by the Army to take place next spring at Fort Bragg, concert organizers and a spokesman for the post said yesterday. Organizers planned to hold the Rock Beyond Belief event this year, but they cancelled after saying Bragg leadership was not providing the same support it gave to an evangelical Christian concert last fall. The plan is to hold the event on March 31 at the main parade field at Fort Bragg, where the Christian-themed Rock the Fort concert was held. Famed atheist Richard Dawkins is scheduled to appear, along with musicians, speakers and other entertainment. “This just might be the turning point in our struggle for acceptance,” Sgt. Justin Griffith, main organizer of the event and the military director of American Atheists. “I mean it. I get letters daily from service members asking for advice on how to ‘do something like what’s going on at Fort Bragg’.” Final approval for the event came last week, Bragg spokesman Ben Abel said. The festival will get the same treatment from Bragg that other groups receive, he said.

Shah said the world has a unique opportunity to save tens of thousands of children’s lives by expanding humanitarian activities inside Somalia, though he noted that it would be a challenge for aid providers to get into al-Shabab-controlled south-central Somalia.

Even before she read the novel The Help or landed a role in the new film adaptation, actress Bryce Dallas Howard was familiar with the issues it explores through tales told by her mother. Like the bestselling book by Kathryn Stockett, the drama follows budding journalist Skeeter (Emma Stone) as she attempts to interview and write about the black maids who take care of the homes and children of their white bosses in 1960s Jackson, Miss. Howard, who plays racist socialite Hilly in the film, says her mother grew up predominantly in the Deep South and told her stories that were “incredibly valuable” as she prepared. “She was born in the mid-’50s, so her memories of that time, she’s pieced them together, but (they’re) of just the social dynamic of the town that she lived in,” Howard said. “When she first started reading The Help, she had to actually put it down because it was so intense for her because it was bringing back these memories. While The Help is in so many ways a celebration of these women’s friendships and what they overcome, it’s also very truthful and very painful and it was intense for my mom to read that. “She said to me, when she picked up the book again ... ‘I can read Stephen King before I go to bed at night, I can watch horror films. 7 CASEY ANTHONY, NETWORKS FACE INTERVIEW DILEMMA
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Casey Anthony, acquitted for murdering her daughter Caylee, will likely face a choice when she decides to grant an interview: Should she take the best chance for rehabilitating her image or the best chance for a payday? Her consideration comes at a time when broadcast network executives are particularly skittish about the impression of paying subjects to talk. At the same time, networks wonder about sitting down with someone so deeply unpopular. ABC, CBS and NBC have all publicly pledged not to pay Anthony to license photos or other materials if she agrees to an interview. Making such payments has been a way of getting around news division policies not to pay interview subjects; ABC paid Anthony a reported $200,000 US to use some of her photos of Caylee in 2008. “It’s a terrible practice,” said CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager. “For our organization, it goes against what we believe in.” After receiving bad publicity for the Anthony payment during her trial and other instances, ABC News President Ben Sherwood said recently that ABC will no longer agree to such licensing deals.

ECB’S PLEDGES TO BUY BONDS FROM SPAIN, ITALY FRANKFURT, Germany (Associated Press)
A risky European Central Bank decision to fight the continent’s debt crisis by buying Spanish and Italian bonds on Monday started pushing down the soaring interest rates threatening those countries with financial disaster. But some analysts cautioned that buying up the bonds of deeply indebted governments transfers significant risk to the balance sheet of an institution long reluctant to move beyond its traditional role controlling inflation. Others expressed fears that the ECB could end its bondbuying too soon, leading rates to rise again. Analysts at the Royal Bank of Scotland said they expected the central bank to buy an average of 2.5 billion euros worth of Spanish and Italian bonds each day, equivalent to 600 billion euros a year. Eventually, the bank could wind up purchasing 850 billion euros of Spanish and Italian debt, the analysts added.
TVA SUSPENDS DIVIDEND AS Q2 PROFITS HIT $13.8M MONTREAL (Canadian Press)
TVA Group says it will suspend its dividend payments as the broadcaster spends more to launch several new channels, including Sun News. The Quebec-based broadcaster, a unit of Quebecor Media, said yesterday that “significant investments” in the company and the launch of several specialty channels are the reasons for the suspension. In May, TVA Group declared a dividend of five cents a share to Class A and B shareholders. In its financial report, TVA said its net profit attributable to shareholders increased to $13.8 million, or 58 cents per share, in the second quarter ended June 30. That compared with $11.7 million, or 49 cents per share a year ago. ADD YOUR

Lions QB Travis Lulay throws against the Roughriders during the first half on Friday in Vancouver.
LIONS LOOKING TO TURN THE CORNER VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Long after the rest of the B.C. Lions offence had left the field yesterday, quarterback Travis Lulay and receiver Arland Bruce remained. Working without a helmet or shoulder pads, Bruce ran extra routes in his first day of practice with his new team. Showing his sure hands, the 33-year-old slotback snagged everything Lulay fired his way. Pitch and catch. Sometimes the pair would take a break. Lulay would talk. Bruce, obtained in a trade from Hamilton last week, would listen and nod his head. The hope is that once Bruce fully understands the Lions’ system he will bring some bite to a B.C. offence that has lacked teeth for a lot of this season. “I get in where I fit in,” Bruce said later, his T-shirt drenched in sweat. “Any time you come to a team and you’re a receiver ... you have to get with the quarterback first. “I want to be involved and do what I do, and that’s help teams win and contribute.” Lulay said Bruce is like a sponge. “He’s eager to learn,” Lulay said. “I want to help him out as best I can (and) just make the transition as
smooth as it can be.” The Lions snapped a five-game CFL losing streak Friday night with a 24-11 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. B.C. and Saskatchewan now both have 1-5 records. With that first win under their belt, and Bruce anxious to prove himself on the West Coast, B.C. could be ready to turn the corner on the season. The Lions might also get a taste of reality Saturday night when the 5-1 Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the league’s hottest team, visits Empire Field. “We’re not out of the woods by any stretch,” said veteran slotback Geroy Simon, who had 134 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Riders. “We have been working hard all season. It’s just a matter of playing smarter. We started to do that the other day.” Wally Buono, the Lions coach and general manager, said with a third of the season over, his team doesn’t have much margin for error. “We don’t have a lot of leverage or probability because we are so far behind the eight ball right now,” said a gruff Buono. Having both Simon and Bruce playing slotback gives the Lions a formidable one-two punch that defences will have to defend against. Bruce didn’t hesitate when asked whether he or Simon will be the Lions’ No. 1 receiver. “I think we are both No. 1,” he said, bringing a long, silent pause from the media gathered around him. “He understands we are both No. 1.”

VOSKOBOEVA, HALEP POST UPSET WINS AT ROGERS CUP TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Galina Voskoboeva started a trend of upsets on the first day of the women’s main draw at the Rogers Cup. The qualifier from Kazakhstan eliminated No. 9 seed Marion Bartoli of France 6-3, 6-3 in first-round action yesterday just hours before 19-year-old Romanian Simona Halep rallied to take out 12th-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Germany’s Julia Goerges followed suit by easily dispatching No. 15 seed Jelena Jankovic with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in a evening match. The Canadian contingent at this year’s tournament lost a member when Rebecca Marino bowed out against Ekaterina Makarova in a tight battle. The 20-year-old from Vancouver was defeated 7-6 (8), 6-4, by the Russian, leaving only three Canadians remaining in the singles draw. Kuznetsova made 50 unforced errors to lose control of the match and send Halep to the second round in the young qualifier’s Rogers Cup debut. The 55th-ranked Halep, who advanced to the main draw after defeating Toronto’s Sharon Fichman in final-round qualifying Sunday, rebounded after dropping the opening set to stun the 15th-ranked Kuznetsova. The 26-year-old Voskoboeva is ranked 135th in the world and came into the match fresh off a semifinals appearance at the inaugural Baku Cup in Azerbaijan. Her career-best ranking was No. 64 in February 2009.

RAVENS SIGN RUNNING BACK RICKY WILLIAMS OWINGS MILLS, Md. (Associated Press)
The Baltimore Ravens have signed veteran running back Ricky Williams to replace Willis McGahee, who they let go days before training camp. Williams agreed to a two-year deal, the team announced yesterday. The former Heisman Trophy played last season with the Miami Dolphins and if everything goes well with his physical today, Williams will work in tandem with Ray Rice. “He’s a veteran that brings a lot of leadership,” Rice said. “I’m looking to learn a lot from him. I’m looking forward to working with him.” A former Pro Bowler, Williams rushed for a career-high 1,853 yards to lead the league in 2002. “He’s an awesome player,” quarterback Joe Flacco said. “He’s a legit player.” Williams has rushed for 9,569 career yards and 68 touchdowns, recording 325 receptions for 2,523 yards and eight touchdowns. Williams has a history of failed drug tests for marijuana and has been suspended by the NFL in the past. He has also retired in the past only to return to football.

Months after the death of the Mars rover Spirit, its surviving twin Opportunity, is poised to reach the rim of a vast crater to begin a fresh round of exploration.
Months after the death of the Mars rover Spirit, its surviving twin is poised to reach the rim of a vast crater to begin a fresh round of exploration. Driving commands sent up to Opportunity directed the six-wheel rover to make the final push toward Endeavour crater, a 22-kilometre-wide depression near the Martian equator that likely could be its final destination. At its current pace and barring any hiccups, Opportunity should roll up to the crater’s edge sometime today. The finish
line was a spot along a ridge that the rover team nicknamed “Spirit Point” in honour of Opportunity’s lost twin. “I’m totally pumped. We’ve been driving for so long,” said Ray Arvidson of Washington University in St. Louis who is part of the team. The milestone injects a sense of adventure back into a mission that wowed the public with portraits of the landscape and the unmistakable geologic discoveries of a warm and wetter past. The NASA rovers parachuted to opposite sides of Mars in 2004 for what was a planned three-month mission, but both have operated beyond their factory warranty. Spirit’s journey ended in May after NASA ceased trying to contact it. It had been trapped in sand and unheard from for more than a year. Opportunity has been on a driving spree since 2008 after it crawled out of a much smaller crater and trundled south toward Endeavour, stopping occasionally to sightsee and examine rock outcrops. There are no plans to drive across the crater for fear of getting stuck. Instead, it will traverse south along the rim in search of clay minerals thought to form under wet conditions.

Na’vi or nerdy? The hundreds of people around the world committed to learning Na’vi, the language created for the giant blue aliens in the blockbuster movie Avatar, apparently don’t really care which they are. A UBC professor that asked them about their commitment to the fictional language says she was astonished at the hundreds of responses and the variety of places they came from. Christine Schreyer, whose specialty is actually extinct languages, is working to turn her survey results into a presentation to the American Anthropological Association conference in Montreal in November. She said people trying to save their own languages could take some lessons from the Na’vi book. “The fact that they are able to learn to read and write, and they’re so dedicated and they have these interesting ways of learning. So too could these endangered language communities pick up on that.” Thousands of people are visiting the Learn Na’vi website where they can teach themselves the Na’vi alphabet, read the dictionary, take part in a Na’vi forum, and even download an application so their GPS can speak Na’vi. Paul Frommer created the language for the movie with less than 1,000 words, but he said the avid linguists are clamouring for more. “It’s been astonishing to me, the response that it’s gotten, really worldwide,” said Frommer, a professor emeritus of clinical management communication at the University of Southern California. Frommer said he started with just 30 words given to him from Avatar director James Cameron, along with instructions from Cameron to “make it sound appealing and make it sound complicated.”

DHARMSALA, India (Associated Press)
A Harvard-trained legal scholar was sworn in yesterday as new head of the Tibetan government-in-exile, taking over from the Dalai Lama as the official leader of his people’s fight for freedom. Lobsang Sangay immediately confronted a host of challenges. Sangay is the first secular figure to ever lead the deeply religious Tibetan community. He was born in the eastern Indian town of Darjeeling and has never visited Tibet. China has rejected his legitimacy and refuses to negotiate with him. It would be almost unthinkable for him to veer from the policies set by the revered Dalai Lama, and because he was only chosen by the tiny fraction of Tibetans abroad during April elections, it is difficult for him to claim he represents all his people. Sangay appeared unfazed. Sangay has vowed to follow the Dalai Lama’s approach of seeking increased autonomy for Tibet within China. “We are also willing to negotiate with the Chinese government any time, anywhere,” Sangay told the huge crowd that gathered for the ceremony.
to-dusk fast. Late Sunday, Saudi Arabia’s king – whose country does not tolerate dissent and lent its military troops to repress anti-government protests in neighbouring Bahrain – said he was recalling his ambassador in Damascus for consultations, and demanded “an end to the killing machine and bloodshed.” “Any sane Arab, Muslim or anyone else knows that this has nothing to do with religion, or ethics or morals; spilling the blood of the innocent for any reasons or pretext leads to no path,” King Abdullah said in a statement.
SYRIAN MINISTER REPLACED BY ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF BEIRUT (Associated Press)
NEW PM SWORN IN FOR TIBETAN GOV’T IN EXILE

Syria’s defence minister was replaced yesterday by the army chief of staff in the midst of a brutal military crackdown on a five-month-old uprising against President Bashar Assad, the staterun news agency said. The SANA report said Gen. Ali Habib, the country’s defence minister since 2009, was removed because of health problems. Assad appointed Gen. Dawoud Rajha as the new defence minister as part of a shake-up of a number of key posts, SANA said. The army has played a key role in the crackdown on protesters, along with the security services and armed thugs known as shabiha. The military renewed its assault yesterday on Deir el-Zour, unleashing artillery fire on the eastern town, a day after at least 42 people were killed there. The intensifying government crackdown has drawn sharp condemnation from abroad, and Arab nations joined the growing international chorus against Assad’s regime yesterday, with Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia pulling out their ambassadors. The international commu-
nity has imposed sanctions and demanded an immediate end to the attacks. France and Germany renewed their condemnation yesterday. But in a sign of growing outrage, Syria’s Arab neighbours joined the mounting criticism, voicing their concerns about a crackdown that intensified on the eve of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan – a time of introspection and piety characterized by a dawn-
