3 YEARS LATER, B.C. MAN FREE FROM MEXICO PRISON CELL
VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
A Canadian businessman who’s back in B.C. after a Mexican judge cleared him of drug charges says he kissed the ground Thursday at Vancouver International Airport. Pavel Kulisek spent three and a-half years in a Mexican jail after police accused him in 2008 of being a member of a drug cartel and participating in drug trafficking. “I kissed the earth in the airport. I went down on my knees,” Kulisek told CTV British Columbia. “For three-and-a-half years, I could see just concrete.... When I came to Vancouver, we were driving and I saw the green stuff all around me – it was just like you are in heaven.” In 2007, Kulisek moved his family to Mexico for an extended vacation in a motorhome. He soon befriended a Mexican man who was a fellow dirt bike enthusiast. But just over a year later, police arrested Kulisek and his Mexican friend while they were at a hotdog stand. They accused the Mexican of being a top member in Tijuana’s drug trade. Kulisek was accused of being a member of a drug cartel and participating in drug trafficking. Kulisek insisted he didn’t know his friend’s true identity and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kulisek said he now hopes to take his family on a camping trip.

Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner with his six-month-old daughter Fintry announces his resignation at the attorney-general’s office in the B.C. legislature yesterday.
PENNER QUITS B.C. CABINET
TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)
Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner has resigned as attorney general and won’t run in the next B.C. election. After telling Premier Christy Clark of his decision yesterday, Penner said the time he has spent with his family this summer convinced him it is time for a change after 15 years as a politician. Speaking to reporters as he packed personal items in
the attorney-general’s office at the B.C. legislature, Penner said he will miss the challenging job. What he won’t miss are the two Blackberrys with a constant stream of messages and “a phone that never stops ringing.” The decision point was the B.C. Liberals’ election preparations. Penner said he received papers from the party a few weeks ago, asking him to name his campaign team for the next election. That could be called as soon as this fall. “I believe the premier and government would be better served having someone in cabinet who will be working with them, shoulder-to-shoulder, through to and after the next election,” Penner said. At age 45, Penner has been an MLA for the Chilliwack area since 1996.

A list of foreign fugitives wanted by the Canada Border Services Agency includes these four men last seen in Metro Vancouver: Satpal Singh Jhatu, Xiao Yu ‘Jackie’ Wang, Xun Zhang and Marcus Thomas Brown.
FOUR FOREIGN FUGITIVES INCLUDE CONTRACT KILLER JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)
Four men last seen in Metro Vancouver are on a newly issued list of most wanted criminals who are illegally in Canada but have so far dodged deportation. The Canadian Border Services Agency issued the list of 32 immigrants who have all been convicted of criminal offences and face active warrants for deportation. Indian-born Satpal Singh Jhatu, 43, convicted of the contract killing of a Matsqui woman in 1987, was last believed to be in Port Coquitlam. Jhatu served two-thirds of a life sentence for first-degree murder after he beat to death and then burned the body of Ranjit Toore
– the wife of his boss. He was released from prison in 2004 on condition he would return to India, but never boarded his flight and has eluded authorities ever since. Xiao Yu “Jackie” Wang, 19, of China, has a sexual assault conviction and last lived in Coquitlam. Richmond is the last known address of Chinese-born Xun Zhang, 32, who has convictions for drug trafficking, assault, robbery, theft and conspiracy to produce a controlled substance. Marcus Thomas Brown, 23, was last believed living in Vancouver and has past convictions on narcotic possession and weapon charges.

Both Zhang and Jhatu have also operated under various other aliases. Federal officials estimate there are 2,700 foreign fugitives with criminal convictions in Canada who have so far escaped deportation. Three Metro Vancouver parks have made a list of Canada’s most trash-infested shorelines. Kanaka Creek Regional Park in Maple Ridge was second-worst in the nation, according to organizers of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. The fourth most littered shoreline was Tom Hopkins Ravine Park in Delta, followed by fifth-place Brownsville Bar Park along the Fraser River in Surrey. The rankings were based on the amount of garbage collected during last year’s annual shoreline cleanup.
CASINOS TO BOOST DETECTION OF PROBLEM GAMBLERS VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Problem gamblers who have voluntarily asked B.C. casinos to prevent them from placing bets should expect more rapid detection and greater consequences for breaching their agreement. The pledge comes from B.C.’s lottery corporation after two independent studies found its voluntary self-exclusion program isn’t always catching gamblers who’ve requested help in staying away. Several lawsuits have been filed by participants alleging the Crown gaming corporation failed to keep up its end of the bargain.

A 30-year-old man from Surrey is recovering after being shot by an unknown assailant Wednesday night. Just before 11 p.m., a man about 5’6” approached, wearing a black balaclava and black hoodie, and began shooting at the group of men, striking one of them in the abdomen. The injured man, who lived next door, is expected to make a full recovery. The gunman left on foot, but the sound of squealing tires was heard shortly after.

A Campbell River RCMP officer received a phone call from a man trying to purchase $100 worth of drugs on Aug. 6. The officer quickly realized that the man had dialed the wrong number, and arranged a meeting. A short time later, the man called the officer again to confirm the meeting and asked if the officer would trade some oxycodone for the $100 worth of drugs. The officer then met with the suspect a short time later and arrested the man. While searching the suspect the officer seized a concealed weapon.
In an unusual campaign tactic a past and potentially future Penticton mayoral candidate is stepping forward to discuss his arrest for procuring juvenile prostitution weeks before the matter gets to court. “I’m not hiding it, I am telling you right now. The thing is you can judge me at the polls if you don’t like what I have been charged with, or my particular type of behaviour then don’t vote for me,” said Benjamin Wolfe, who ran for mayor in 2008. He is due in court on Sept. 7.
in B.C., down into the United States … it’s a reverse of what happened in 2003 and 2004,” Hahn told CKNW radio yesterday. “I guarantee the people with the big motorhomes in Alberta are thinking twice about coming west. They’re going south because they can buy a lot more fuel for a lot less money down in the States.” In 2001, a vehicle with two passengers cost about $50 to travel from the B.C. mainland to Vancouver Island. That’s up to about $75 today, with proportionally larger increases on smaller routes. Hahn said BC Ferries’ fuel costs have tripled to $120 million a year since he was appointed CEO in 2003. Foot traffic on the ferries is up as travellers occasionally find sailing waits for walk-on passengers.

FERRY TRAFFIC DOWN AS TOURISTS GO SOUTH Tourists are lining up at U.S. border crossings instead of heading to B.C.’s favourite coastal getaways, and summer traffic on BC Ferries is down about four per cent as a result. BC Ferries is running its full summer schedule of sailings and CEO David Hahn estimates the lighter traffic means the corporation will probably take a loss of about $20 million on the year. But Hahn rejects the suggestion that rising ferry fares are keeping people away, because Statistics Canada figures show U.S. visits have slumped across Canada while traffic south has soared. “The strength of the Canadian dollar, the price of fuel, has driven Canadians across the board, not just

Norwegian police say the man behind the July attacks that killed 77 people hung up twice on authorities while calling to surrender during the shooting at a youth camp at Utoya island. Police say the first phone call came 26 minutes before the police arrested Anders Behring Breivik, who identified himself as the commander in an anticommunist resistance movement. Police said yesterday that Breivik hung up and authorities unsuccessfully tried to call him back. Breivik called again one minute before he was captured, but hung up again.

The Express-AM4 satellite was to be put into a geostationary orbit to provide digital TV broadcasting for Russia’s far eastern regions.

Two children and a young man have died this summer from a brain-eating amoeba that lives in water, health officials say. The illness is extremely rare. About 120 U.S. cases – almost all of them deaths – have been reported since the amoeba was identified in the early 1960s, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are no signs that cases are increasing. The amoeba – Naegleria fowleri – gets up the nose, burrows up into the skull and destroys brain tissue. It’s found in warm lakes and rivers during the hot summer months, mostly in the South.

ISRAEL STRIKES GAZA AFTER MILITANT ATTACKS
Within an hour, gunmen had riddled another passing bus and two cars with bullets and rigged a roadside bomb that detonated under an army jeep rushing to the scene. At the same time, mortar gunners in Gaza opened fire at soldiers along the Gaza-Israel border fence. Israeli soldiers eventually killed five attackers, the military said, and defence officials said three of the bodies were wired with explosives. It was not clear how many militants were involved or where they were from. Egyptian officials said a gunfight erupted on the border, and three Egyptians were killed, one police officer and two soldiers. It was not clear if the gunfire at the Egyptians came from Israeli soldiers or the militants.

POLICE MAKE 13TH ARREST IN U.K. PHONE HACKING SCANDAL LONDON (AP)
British police made a new arrest yesterday in the country’s tabloid phone hacking scandal, amid fresh scrutiny of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire after newly disclosed documents appeared to contradict testimony his son and top aide gave to U.K. lawmakers. Police in London confirmed a 38-yearold man, who they declined to name, was arrested at a London police station after he arrived voluntarily yesterday. He is the 13th person to be arrested so far in the saga – only one of those arrested has been cleared. Rupert Murdoch Britain’s Guardian newspaper reported the man was James Desborough, formerly the Los Angeles-based U.S. editor for the now-shuttered News of the World tabloid. The disclosure earlier this week of new documents in the phone hacking case has piled new pressure on Murdoch and his son James Murdoch, who oversees News International. Correspondence published Tuesday by British lawmakers investigating the scandal suggested that executives were warned more than four years ago that phone hacking was endemic at the now-defunct tabloid.

OBAMA TELLS ASSAD TO STEP DOWN WASHINGTON (Associated Press)
President Barack Obama called directly yesterday for Syrian President Bashar Assad to resign, saying the brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters makes the heir to a long Middle East family dictatorship unfit to lead. It was the administration’s first explicit demand for Assad to step down and was accompanied by an executive order freezing all Syrian government assets in the U.S. and targeting the country’s lucrative energy President Obama sector. has issued his first The move was co-orexplicit demand for dinated with the United Syrian President Nations and with U.S. allies Bashar Assad to in Europe and the Middle resign, saying he East and followed an intense is unfit to lead his diplomatic campaign to country. increase pressure on Assad. The European Union issued an identical call shortly after Obama’s statement, followed quickly by the leaders of France, Britain and Germany. UN investigators said Syria’s crackdown “may amount to crimes against humanity” and should be referred to the International Criminal Court. In a written statement released by the White House, Obama said Assad had failed to follow through on promises to reform and instead escalated a brutal crackdown on pro-reform activists that rights groups say has killed nearly 2,000 people since an uprising against his regime began five months ago. “His calls for dialogue and reform have rung hollow
while he is imprisoning, torturing, and slaughtering his own people,” Obama said. “We have consistently said that President Assad must lead a democratic transition or get out of the way. He has not led. For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President Assad to step aside.” “It is clear that President Assad believes that he can silence the voices of his people by resorting to the repressive tactics of the past. But he is wrong,” Obama said. U.S. officials acknowledged the move is not likely to have any immediate impact on the Syrian regime’s behaviour. But they said it would send a powerful signal that Assad is no longer welcome in the international community. And they noted that the additional sanctions would further boost pressure on Assad and his inner circle.

ALLEGED CRIME BOSS’S GIRLFRIEND ON TRIAL FOR AIDING HIS ESCAPE
BOSTON (Associated Press)
The girlfriend of reputed crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger pleaded not guilty yesterday to helping him elude authorities during his 16 years as a fugitive. Catherine Greig entered her plea in a brief appearance in federal court in Boston that lasted less than five minutes. She also waived a reading of the indictment. Greig was indicted last week on a charge of conspiracy to harbour and conceal a fugitive, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of five years. Greig has been jailed since she and Bulger were captured in June in California. Bulger has pleaded not guilty to participating in 19 murders. Prosecutors say Greig actively helped Bulger escape capture, but her attorney says she’s a subservient woman who wasn’t aware of the extent of Bulger’s alleged crimes when she fled with him. Greig did not speak yesterday, except to tell the judge she understood the charges against her and was ready to enter her plea. After the hearing, Greig’s attorney Kevin Reddington was asked if Greig was cooperating with authorities against Bulger. “Not while I’m representing her,” Reddington said. “She’s going to trial on the case – that’s it.”

Turns out Red Green was just playing possum. Steve Smith wrote, produced and headlined exactly 300 episodes of Red Green before pulling the plug, playing the plaid-shirted handyman who never met a project he couldn’t duct tape. They were spread over several stations and networks, starting with a handshake deal in 1990 at Hamilton’s CHCH. Global, PBS and CBC also broadcast the series. A feature film, Duct Tape Forever, was released in 2002. When Smith finally walked away DUCT TAPE from Possum Lodge and hung up his suspenders six years ago he vowed he’d FOREVER never perform as the character again. “I really, really tried, OK?” he says from his home in Hamilton. “That first winter, when I finished the last show and went to Florida, I played 162 rounds of golf. Nobody tried harder than me.” Then he began to get that creative itch again. He and his wife formed a little singing group and started performing near their winter home in Florida. He found himself sneaking in shtick between songs. And then one day he was playing golf with the CEO of Random House Canada and was offered a chance to write a book in the Red Green character. “I thought, ‘He’s not going to ask me again if I say ASSOCIATED PRESS no,’” recalls Smith. Steve Smith will return to the stage as Red Green The mock manual How To Do Everything was the result. next month. ™

STORM KILLS 3 AT BELGIAN MUSIC FEST
HASSELT, Belgium (Associated Press)
A storm swept through a popular openair music festival in this eastern Belgium town yesterday killing at least three people and injuring more than 70 others, an official said. Ambulances and police cars raced to and from the site of the Pukkelpop festival, near the town of Hasselt, 80 kilometres east of Brussels, yesterday, their sirens blaring. Concertgoers described scenes of panic as the sky darkened, the winds whipped, rain poured, hailstones larger than 1 centimetre across pelted the crowds, and concert structures buckled. “It was frightening. It looked terrible. All the structures collapsed,” said Brinnie Gardner, 20, of Aukland, New Zealand, who is on a tour of Europe with a friend. “There was panic. It was crazy.” Hugo Simons, Hasselt’s head of emergency medical planning, told VRT radio that three people had died, 11 had been severely injured and 60 had sustained light injuries as a result of the storm. Video from the site showed stage equipment dangling in high winds as rainsoaked concertgoers at the music festival ran for cover. Trees and branches all around the area were downed, evidence of the sudden ferocity of the winds.

STEVE SMITH BRINGS BACK RED GREEN
Smith realized he’d have to promote the book and tested out a oneman show in Minneapolis. “It was just so much fun,” says the 65-year-old entertainer. Next month, starting Sept. 8 in Surrey, and running straight across the country to St. John’s, N.L, Smith brings the Red Green Wit & Wisdom Tour to Canada. While there is a stop at Ontario’s Casino Rama (Oct. 27), there are no plans to play big urban centres like Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal. “If there are 100,000 or more people, I’m probably not going there,” says Smith.

The private firm provides information to government and commercial clients on what jihadists are saying on the Internet and traditional media. Raisman said the online forum is often used by al-Qaida. Muslim extremist groups in the past few months have increased calls for people to take violent action against certain targets in the West, he said. “The concern is that there is someone who will read it, agree with it and say, ‘I want to be the Sayyid Nosair of 2011 and kill David Letterman,’” Raisman said. The FBI is also looking into the threat, said Jim Margolin, spokesman for the bureau’s New York office. “We take every potential threat seriously,” he said. Neither CBS nor a Letterman spokesman would comment. CBS would not make available a transcript of Letterman’s monologue on the killing of Kashmiri.

CANADIANS SEEKING WAYS TO CUT SPENDING: SURVEY TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Canadians are feeling increasingly uneasy about turmoil in the global economy and many are planning to reduce or defer non-essential spending, according to a survey released yesterday by The Boston Consulting Group. “Canadian consumers are already burdened by high debt levels and feelings of financial insecurity,” Cliff Grevler, a partner in BCG’s Toronto office, said in a statement. The online survey of 1,000 adults conducted earlier this week found that a third of Canadians, or 33 per cent overall, felt financially insecure or in financial trouble, up eight percentage points since March. Grevler said the BCG survey found consumers were increasingly looking to buy more products “on deal” and noted that increased caution among female consumers was important since “we also know that women control over 70 per cent of household spending in Canada.”
GOLDMAN LAUNCHES NEW CANADIAN STOCK MARKET TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Another new stock market is set to debut in Canada, this time in the hands of New York investment bank Goldman Sachs. The Wall Street firm says it will bring its stock market system SIGMA X to Canada at an unspecified date. The SIGMA system is what’s known as a “dark pool” market which allows buyers and sellers to anonymously buy and sell stocks from the Toronto Stock Exchange. The stock market will be financed by numerous investors in addition to Goldman, including brokers, hedge funds and institutions. The move comes as competition in the stock market space heats up. TMX Group is in the middle of a hostile takeover bid for the company by a group of Canadian banks and other financial companies. ADD YOUR

Injured | New Jersey centre Travis Zajac will miss at least a month and a half of the season as he recovers from Achilles tendon surgery, GM Lou Lamoriello said yesterday.
HOCKEY STARTS OCT. 6

they are 3-0 this season and meet the 1-6 B.C. Lions tonight. It is, said Koch and several other Eskimos, still about getting two big points. “When we were 4-0 it wasn’t about going to 5-0, it was about taking those two points every week,” said Koch. “Now we’re 5-2 it’s still about taking those two points, especially from a team in your division. We’re tied for first, so the world isn’t crumbling.”
ESKIMOS HOPE TO SNAP 2-GAME SKID AGAINST LIONS EDMONTON (Canadian Press)
Kyle Koch pondered the question for a moment: how different is the Edmonton Eskimos dressing room this week, after two straight losses, compared to Week 5 when they were 5-0? “Ah, there’s not too much difference,” said the veteran offensive lineman. “Everyone’s still pretty
upbeat. You have to remember we went from 5-0 to 5-2, the world’s not crumbling. We played a bad game (in Montreal). We just have to get ready to win a game this week.” After going unbeaten in their first five games the Eskimos lost 28-16 in Winnipeg and 27-4 in Montreal. NADAL REACHES QUARTERS IN CINCINNATI TENNIS MASON, Ohio (Associated Press)
Rafael Nadal wanted to play a lot of tennis at the Western & Southern Open, though maybe not all in one day. Nadal survived a three-set, three-tiebreaker match against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco yesterday, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (9) victory that kept him on court for three hours 38 minutes. “The truth is that I am very happy,” he said, before heading off to get ready for a doubles match. “Very content with the victory. It was a tough match for both of us.” Nadal arrived hoping to get a lot of on-court time this week. He missed a month after hurting his left foot at Wimbledon, where he reached the finals and lost to Novak Djokovic. He had a setback before his first match in Cincinnati. Nadal burned the tips of his index and middle fingers on his right hand when he touched a hot plate at a local restaurant. The left-handed Nadal had the fingers bandaged again yesterday for protection. The second-ranked Nadal finished it by converting his fifth match point. It was only the second best-of-three matches in Nadal’s career that featured three tiebreakers. The second-ranked Nadal improved to 12-0 in his career against the unseeded Verdasco. “You enjoy always a good match,” Verdasco said. “But when you lose in this way, of course it’s not easy to lose. You have it so close. Tennis is like that.” In the quarter-finals, Nadal will play seventh-seeded Mardy Fish, who beat Richard Gasquet 7-5, 7-5. No. 4 Andy Murray also advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 win over American qualifier Alex Bogomolov Jr.
BOYD LEADS ARGOS PAST ROUGHRIDERS TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Cory Boyd ran for two touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts held on for a thrilling 24-18 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders last night to halt a six-game losing streak. Toronto (2-6) earned its first home win over Saskatchewan (1-7) since 2005, a span of six contests, before a Rogers Centre gathering of 20,482 with an open roof on a beautiful summer evening. The victory was also the Argos’ first here since a 17-13 decision over Winnipeg on Sept. 19, 2010, again a six-game stretch. But it didn’t come easily as Saskatchewan’s Darian Durant erased a 24-4 deficit by hitting Chris Getzlaf and former Argo James Robinson on TD strikes of 70 and 21 yards, respectively. He smartly drove the Riders to the Toronto 19-yard line before twice failing to connect on the gamewinning throw into the end zone, turning the ball over on downs with less than 20 seconds remaining. The exciting ending notwithstanding, Greg Marshall’s first season as a CFL head coach continues to be a trying one as the Riders – who’ve won the West Division title and appeared in the Grey Cup the last two years – have dropped four straight. Saskatchewan’s woes in southern Ontario this season continued after being humbled 33-3 in Hamilton on July 16.

Players’ lawyer Larry Coben of Philadelphia said one client may soon lose his home because of his health-related financial problems. “The big issue, for us, is they were told for decades to lead with their heads,” Coben said. “The NFL would never admit that there’s any correlation (to later health problems).” Seventy-five retired players sued the NFL last month in Los Angeles, alleging the league has known since the 1920s of the harmful effects of concussions, but concealed them from players, coaches, trainers and the public until June 2010. That suit also names helmetmaker Riddell, the NFL’s official helmet supplier, as a defendant.

The plaintiffs include two-time Super Bowl champion Jim McMahon, who has said he played through five concussions but now frequently walks around “in a daze” and forgets why he entered a room. The suit accuses the NFL of negligence and intentional misconduct in its response to the headaches, dizziness and dementia that former players have reported. The suit, filed Wednesday, seeks medical monitoring along with funds to pay for the care of injured players. INDIAN ANTI-CORRUPTION CRUSADER ALLOWED TO HOLD 15-DAY HUNGER STRIKE NEW DELHI (Associated Press)
A renowned Indian anti-corruption crusader plans to embark on a 15-day public hunger strike that will pit him and his thousands of supporters against the scandalplagued government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his aides said yesterday. Anna Hazare, who has been fasting since Tuesday, reached an agreement with police to hold the demonstration starting today to push for tough new anti-corruption legislation, after a two-day standoff at a New Delhi jail. Hazare’s ordeal has struck a chord with Indians fed up with rampant corruption. Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through cities across the country to show their support for his demand to strengthen a government reform bill. “People were feeling suffocated in an environment of corruption around them. There is a limit to people’s patience. That’s why people came out on the streets, an exuberant Hazare said in a video posted by his supporters on YouTube. The government has accused Hazare of trying to blackmail Parliament with his threat to fast to death
OFFICIALS DEMAND LONG-TERM SOLUTION FOR AFRICAN FAMINE ROME (Associated Press)
The agriculture minister of drought-hit Kenya appealed yesterday for seeds, irrigation plans and infrastructure to avoid a repetition of famine and food crises in the Horn of Africa “every two years. Sally Kosgei and other delegates at an emergency conference in Rome voiced what they said was a need to look beyond the starving populations’ immediate needs and focus on longer-term solutions for the region. “It is really very important that the world focus now on how to avoid yet another famine or many more famines, Kosgei told the delegates gathered by the UN agency Food and Agriculture Organization. Tens of thousands of people are feared to have died in the famine, caused by war in Somalia and drought in the Horn of Africa – Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea and Somalia. More than 12 million people in the region need food aid, according to the United Nations. Kosgei called for drought-resistant crops to be spread across the region, small irrigation plans to be implemented to help small scale farmers – 60 per cent of all farmers in the area – and infrastructure to allow for quicker transportation of foods across the region.
if they do not pass his proposed legislation to create a powerful ombudsman to police the government. Hazare said he would not stop agitating until the proposed bill is adopted into law. Police had initially given Hazare permission to hold only a threeday public hunger strike, which he refused, but relented yesterday and agreed to allow him to hold a 15-day protest at a fairground in the capital.
Hundreds of supporters camped outside the jail erupted in cheers at the news, threw ower petals in the air and shouted “Anna has won.â€? “It is for the ďŹ rst time that the people of this country are feeling empowered. They are feeling that we are no longer slaves. We are citizens of a free country. Our voice carries importance,â€? said Shanti Bhushan, a former government minister who is helping lead the protest.
