TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR JACK LAYTON TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)

Tributes flooded in for federal New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton, who died of cancer early yesterday at age 61. Layton’s death comes just months after he led the NDP to Official Opposition status in Parliament, a first for the party. On July 25, Layton announced he was fighting a second bout of cancer, and was taking time away to seek treatment. The NDP says Layton died peacefully before 5 a.m. Monday at his Toronto home. His wife and fellow MP Olivia Chow and loved ones were with him. Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a statement in Ottawa: “On behalf of all Canadians, I salute Jack’s contribution to public life, a contribution that will be sorely missed,” Harper said. “I know one thing: Jack gave his fight against cancer everything he had. Indeed, Jack never backed down from any fight.” B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix said: “While the country is the poorer for Jack’s passing, Canada is richer for his immense contribution over a lifetime in politics. Wherever he went and whoever he met, Jack made his mark with his optimism, dynamism and boundless energy. “As we grieve, we also commit ourselves to continue to build on his legacy and the principles he fought for all his political life.” Premier Christy Clark also issued a statement. “It was with great sadness that we learned today of the passing of federal New Democrat Party leader Jack Layton,” Clark said. “A passionate Canadian, Jack Layton was a tireless advocate and his energy, dedication and intelligence have been at the service of Canadians since his days as a municipal politician.” “Collectively, Canadian hearts are breaking,” national Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said in a statement. “Jack will always be remembered for his

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP RULES CHANGED Mathematics 10, Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus 10, Social Studies 11, B.C. First Nations Studies 12, Civic Studies 11, English 10, English 10 First Peoples, French 12 and Communications 12. “B.C.’s exam program continues to be one of the most rigorous in Canada,” Education Minister

TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)

B.C.’s high school grads were leaving millions in scholarship money on the table by not writing optional final exams, so the education ministry has changed the system to make sure the aid gets to students who do well on mandatory tests. Optional scholarship exams for grade 12 have been dropped for this school year, after post-secondary institutions changed their admission criteria and no longer use grade 12 optional tests. Provincial scholarships will now be awarded to students based on the required provincial exams in place for grades 10, 11 and 12. The exam system was changed in 2004 to reflect the different post-secondary pathways students can take. Once they were not counted for post-secondary admission, only one in five grade 12 students chose to write optional scholarship exams. Provincial scholarships are typically $1,000, with the top 20 students receiving $2,500, and before the changes, B.C. used to give out about $5 million worth. Courses that now have required provincial exams are Science 10, Apprenticeship and Workplace

George Abbott said. “Our students compete globally, and we know one of the best ways we can support their bright future is through a solid post-secondary education. “That’s why we’ve modernized our provincial scholarship criteria to better assist and reward students in their pursuit of higher education.”

VIEWING HELD FOR BACON IN LANGLEY ABBOTSFORD NEWS (Black Press)

A private viewing of slain Abbotsford gangster Jonathan Bacon was held on Friday afternoon at Henderson’s Funeral Home in Langley. It was announced discretely, and there were about 30 friends and family in attendance. Henderson’s management said it has received no information about a funeral for Bacon, and suggested the family may conduct a private ceremony. Bacon, a high-profile leader in the Red Scorpions gang, was shot to death outside a Kelowna hotel and casino on Aug. 14.

TEEN GOES MISSING FROM MISSION CAMPSITE MISSION CITY RECORD (Black Press)

A 17-year-old from Mission walked away from his campsite at around 12:30 a.m. Aug. 21 and has not been seen since. Brayden Beaudry was camping with friends, and RCMP say it is believed he left with two females he had just met to walk back to Mission. Beaudry is approximately 5’9” tall, with earlength dark brown hair, blue-green eyes, and a scar over his right eyebrow. He has a large tattoo on his right forearm that reads Steven Rice, and one on his right shoulder of a hand holding five playing cards, showing the ace.

SALMON WILL BE TESTED FOR JAPANESE RADIATION JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)

Returning sockeye salmon will be tested to determine if this year’s run was contaminated by radiation picked up in the North Pacific from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear disaster. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said sampling of salmon and other fish is already underway and will continue through August and September. The agency expects the tests, planned since June, will show radiation in B.C.-caught salmon is well below levels that would prompt federal action, but calls it a prudent measure to reaffirm its safety. MAN PINNED AGAINST CAR IN ROAD RAGE INCIDENT MARIA SPITALE-LEISK (North Shore Outlook)

A 45-year-old man was pinned against his vehicle after a suspect in a road rage incident allegedly accelerated into him with his truck in West Vancouver Saturday night. According to West Vancouver police, the incident took place Aug. 20 at approximately 9:45 p.m. on Marine Drive, just east of Taylor Way. Police say the victim had pulled over to allow an aggressive driver to pass when that motorist also stopped and approached the victim’s vehicle. At that point it’s alleged the suspect punched the victim – who remained in his vehicle – in the face. When the victim got out of his car to defend himself, the suspect ran back to his pickup truck and accelerated into the victim’s vehicle, pinning the man, according to police. WVPD spokesperson Const. Lisa Schmidtke said

passing motorists stopped to aid the victim who was transported to Lions Gate Hospital with serious injuries. The man received 12 stitches to his lower body and sustained bruising to his face as a result of the incident. He has since been released from hospital. The suspect is described as a white male, mid-30s and approximately 5’5” tall. The suspect’s vehicle is a black Toyota pickup truck – model year between 2000 to 2007. Based on witness accounts, the suspect’s licence plate may have contained the digits “114” but police are not sure if it is a B.C. plate. Police expect there to be damage to the passenger side of the truck. If you witnessed the incident or have any information to aid in this investigation, please contact West Vancouver police department 604-925-7300 and quote file # 11-10497.

TransLink is on track for a record year of transit ridership, surpassing even the number of passengers carried in 2010, when the region hosted the Winter Olympics. But the high usage numbers are being tempered with a caution that the transportation authority is near the limit of what it can offer riders and needs a big and controversial package of upgrades if it’s to expand service and keep pace with rising demand. The 114.4 million transit trips in the first six months of the year are four per cent more than in 2010.

MOTORCYCLIST KILLED IN WEEKEND MISSION CRASH MISSION CITY RECORD (Black Press)

A motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a car Saturday. Mission RCMP were called to the 29800-block of Dewdney Trunk Road around 4:15 p.m., and found the rider of the motorcycle dead. The Mounties’ Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) is investigating the accident, and had closed the thoroughfare for several hours Aug. 20. No names have yet been released.

Arson | Investigators suspect foul play in a fire that destroyed or damaged six homes near Edmonton. No one was injured when the blaze burned four of the homes to the ground in Leduc overnight Sunday.

TODAY’S TOP HEADLINES… CANADIAN PRESS

Messages, flowers and other mementos are left at the Centennial Flame as people pay tribute to NDP leader Jack Layton yesterday on Parliament Hill.

JACK LAYTON’S FINAL LETTER TO CANADIANS August 20, 2011 Toronto, Ontario Dear Friends, Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination. Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue. I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected. I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election. A few additional thoughts:

Transportation Safety Board officials say they’re hoping to have more details soon on a plane crash in Nunavut that killed 12 people. The so-called black boxes containing conversations from the cockpit and technical flight data from the First Air flight now are in their Ottawa lab for processing. Officials say it will be several days before they’ll be able to analyse the information gathered in the final moments of the flight and their final report on the crash could take more than a year.

DOCTORS URGED TO DISCUSS USER FEES ST. JOHN’S, N.L. (Canadian Press)

A contentious report from an advisory panel to the Canadian Medical Association says it should consider everything from user fees to franchises and “various insurance schemes” to bolster Canada’s flagging health care system. “Be open to discussing a range of ways of funding services along the entire continuum of care with the goal of improving access,” says the report released yesterday as about 300 association delegates met in St. John’s.

GODERICH STARTS TO ASSESS TORNADO DAMAGE Residents of a town dubbed the prettiest in Canada returned yesterday to homes demolished by the most powerful tornado to hit Ontario in years, dissolving into tears as the depth of the devastation sank in. At least 37 people were injured and a 61-year-old worker at a salt mine was killed as winds of 300 kilometres per hour raged through the beach and port town of 8,000, ripping the roofs off historic buildings, turning trees into match sticks and tossing cars around like toys.

GIRL DIES AFTER DOG ATTACK ON SASK. FIRST NATION NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. (Canadian Press)

Mounties say a three-year-old girl has died after she was attacked by dogs in west-central Saskatchewan. RCMP got an emergency call Sunday night that a young child had been injured by dogs on the Mosquito First Nation, about 35 kilometres south of the Battlefords. Police say the little girl suffered substantial injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at hospital in North Battleford.

RESOLUTE BAY, Nunavut (Canadian Press)

GODERICH, Ont. (Canadian Press)

To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer. To the members of my party: we’ve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government. To the members of our parliamentary caucus: I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. – Please see LAYTON’S continued on page 6

RCMP RESCUE STRANDED MANITOBA BOATERS ISLAND LAKE, Man. (Canadian Press)

A cellphone proved invaluable in the rescue of four adults stranded on an island in northern Manitoba. Two men and two women called Island Lake RCMP on Saturday to say their boat had broken down and they were stuck on an island. But their cellphone ran out of minutes before searchers could pinpoint the lost boaters. RCMP asked the cellular provider to put extra minutes on the phone. Officers were able to make contact again and located the four – cold and wet, but safe – on an island near St. Theresa Point.

Thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets across Syria yesterday after a televised appearance by President Bashar Assad, shouting for him to step down and chanting “Gadhafi is gone, now it’s your turn Bashar!” Security forces opened fire in the city of Homs, killing at least one person. Crowds there and in several other cities were angered by Assad’s remarks on TV and taunted him with warnings that his regime would be the next to unravel. Human rights groups say more than 2,000 people have been killed in the government’s crackdown on a five-month-old uprising.

Tourists and Washingtonians got their first up-close look yesterday at the memorial to the U.S. civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The site opened without fanfare to kick off a week of celebrations ahead of Sunday’s official dedication. The memorial sits on the National Mall between memorials honouring Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson. It includes a 30-foot-tall sculpture of King and a 450-foot-long granite wall inscribed with 14 quotations from his speeches.

The Western-backed Palestinian president delayed local elections for a third time yesterday without setting a new date. Palestinian democracy has been crippled since the Islamic militant Hamas violently overran the Gaza Strip in 2007, forming a rival government to President Mahmoud Abbas’ West Bankbased Palestinian Authority. Abbas has overstayed his own term and is ruling the West Bank by decree. Municipal elections were initially scheduled for July 2010. Abbas said yesterday that he wanted to make sure elections take place in both Palestinian territories.

Polish military prosecutors have charged two officers with negligence for their role in organizing the 2010 flight to Russia in which President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others died – the first criminal charges to be filed in the case. Capt. Marcin Maksjan, a spokesman for prosecutors, said yesterday that the two men had roles of responsibility in the regiment that organized the flight that crashed near Smolensk, Russia. A government report last month found several reasons for the crash, including poor pilot training and a lack of proper co-ordination among crew members.

U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden tried his hand at archery, watched a wrestling match and named a horse during a brief visit yesterday in Mongolia, which he called a shining example of democratic development. Biden praised Mongolia for successfully carrying out presidential and parliamentary elections after making a peaceful transition to democracy in the early 1990s. The small, landlocked country had been a Soviet satellite for decades. “In the last 20 years Mongolia has captured the imagination of the world by its remarkable transition to democracy,” he said.

New York City prosecutors asked a judge yesterday to dismiss all criminal charges against former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn because they aren’t sure beyond a reasonable doubt that the hotel maid who created a cross-continental sensation by accusing him of sexual assault is telling the truth. The Manhattan district attorney’s office said in court papers that the accuser, Nafissatou Diallo, repeatedly gave false information to investigators and grand jurors about her life, her past and her actions following her Dominique encounter with the Strauss-Kahn French diplomat. “In virtually every substantive interview with prosecutors, despite entreaties to simply be truthful, she has not been truthful on matters great and small,” the lawyers wrote. Thompson is asking a judge for an order disqualifying the prosecutor’s office from handling the case. Diallo is also suing Strauss-Kahn, seeking to make him pay financially if not with his freedom, a move that the diplomat’s lawyers helped erode her credibility. Strauss-Kahn is scheduled to go before a judge today.

actress was unharmed. Branson said the house was “completely destroyed” and the fire was not entirely out yesterday. He said he planned to rebuild the house “as soon as we can.” “We’ll all stay here for the time being,” he said. “There’s a lot of damage and we won’t be able to stick it back together again right away.” Virgin said the cause of the fire was still being investigated but lightning was the likely culprit.

FIRE AT BRANSON’S HOME LONDON (Associated Press)

Guests including Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet escaped uninjured when fire destroyed Richard Branson’s Caribbean home during a tropical storm yesterday, said the British businessman. The Virgin Group boss said about 20 people, including Winslet and her children, were staying in the eight-bedroom Great House on Necker, his private isle in the British Virgin Islands. Branson said he was staying in another property around 100 metres away with his wife, Joan and son Sam, 25. He said the fire broke out around 4 a.m. during a tropical storm with lightning and high winds, and Sam managed to help evacuate Winslet and other guests from the house. Tropical Storm Irene walloped the Virgin islands and headed towards Puerto Rico late Sunday and early yesterday, strengthening into a hurricane Monday with winds of about 130 kilometres per hour, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Branson said the guests, including his 90-year-old mother and his daughter Holly, 29, all managed to get out safely. “Kate Winslet, her boyfriend and her family were there and Holly and some of her friends were also staying,” Branson said. “My mother was there and they managed to get her out and she is fine.” Winslet’s spokeswoman, Sara Keene, confirmed the

DAN RATHER KEEPS REPORTING AS HE APPROACHES 80

NEW YORK (Associated Press)

When Dan Rather took a job to create a news program at Mark Cuban’s little-seen HDNet, it felt like a television version of a rebound relationship. His departure from CBS News was fresh and bitter, and who was this new suitor, after all? Yet Rather is now approaching several milestones: five years at HDNet; nearly 200 episodes of Dan Rather Reports; and on Halloween, an 80th birthday as a still-working reporter. “I never thought we’d get to three years, much less five,” Rather said recently. In five years, Dan Rather Reports has been nominated for 12 news Emmy Awards, and won two. Rather portrays the operation as an ideal proving ground for young journalists, “the best place in American electronic journalism to work.” Five years ago, Rather accepted Cuban’s offer to put together a new show without knowing all that would be involved or even much about him. Cuban was more optimistic at the time than Rather, who felt pressure to get on the air. “When we did our first program,” Rather said, “we didn’t have a second program.”

FEMALE HOCKEY PLAYER JOINS BATTLE OF THE BLADES TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Battle of the Blades is about to turn into a battle of the sexes. For the first time, a female hockey player will join the CBC-TV competition, which pairs up hockey players and figure skaters. Tessa Bonhomme, an Olympic gold medallist and member of the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team will try her hand at figure skating when Season 3 of Battle premieres Sept. 18. Bonhomme will be skating with Olympic champion David Pelletier. The winning skaters get $100,000 for the charity of their choice. The lineup of hockey players participating in Season 3 also includes: former Toronto Maple Leaf Bryan Berard; Brad May, who won a Stanley Cup ring with the 2008 Anaheim Ducks; Boyd Devereaux, who won the Cup with Detroit in 2002; and bruiser Wade Belak. Also suiting up is former Colorado Avalanche defenceman Curtis Leschyshyn and ex-Calgary Flame Cale Hulse. In addition to Pelletier, the figure skating lineup includes Russian Elena Berezhnaya and ice dance champ Tanith Belbin.

RUDD GROWING IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION IN ‘OUR IDIOT BROTHER’ LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

For more than a decade, Paul Rudd has served as a comedic chameleon, effortlessly moving from sidekick (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) to scene stealer (Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) to straight man (Dinner for Schmucks, I Love You, Man). He’s tackling his most transformative role yet in Our Idiot Brother. The affable 42-year-old actor grew his hair and beard out last summer to portray Ned, an easygoing organic farmer whose lack of ambition and independence continually frustrates his family. Rudd developed the earnest character with friend-neighbour-director Jesse Peretz. (The pair first worked together on the 2002 improvisational comedy The Chateau.) The indie dramedy, which was snapped up by The Weinstein Co. at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, is distinctly different from any of the other movies listed on Rudd’s seemingly never-ending resume. It’s not as

silly as Role Models or Dinner for Schmucks nor is it as serious as The Cider House Rules or The Shape of Things.

SCENE STEALER

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Paul Rudd is trying out a new role in Our Idiot Brother.

“It’s just like life,” Rudd recently said. “It’s not unrealistic or a cliche. That’s one of the things I really liked about this project. There’s a definitive point of view. To me, the character wasn’t just about his look: the long hair, the beard, the Crocs. Those are external things. He’s just a good guy who’s into bio-dynamic farming.” After being released from prison for selling marijuana to a uniformed police officer, Ned becomes entangled in the lives of his three sisters: free-loving Natalie (Zooey Deschanel), career-focused Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) and perfection-seeking Liz (Emily Mortimer). Rudd has a younger sister, but their real-life relationship didn’t inspire him. “That was probably more of an influence on my decision to pursue acting as a career,” said Rudd. “I think I knew I wanted to do this in high school, but the seeds were probably planted at a much younger age. My sister was born two and a half years after me. It was the perfect age for me to not know what to do and to want to turn the attention back to me.” ADD YOUR

FORD, TOYOTA TO DEVELOP TRUCK, SUV HYBRIDS DEARBORN, Mich. (Associated Press)

Ford and Toyota have decided to work together on a gaselectric hybrid engine to power pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. The companies signed a deal yesterday to share development costs, saying they want to make the technology more affordable for customers and bring it to market faster. Despite economic uncertainty, Canadian retailers should expect a boost from back-to-school shoppers who plan to spend more or the same during the second busiest shopping season of the year, says a BMO Bank of Montreal report. About one-third of Canadians are expected to spend at least $200 on back to school purchases this year and they will spend an average of $319, according to a Leger Marketing survey conducted this month for BMO. The back-to-school shopping survey said consumers should expect to pay $25 to $40 for items such as pens, pencils, paper, notebooks and binders, while spending $210 to $260 for clothing like jeans, shirts and running shoes.

Calm down | The mayors of San Francisco and Oakland and the NFL called for an end to acts of violence at sports events, after two men were shot and wounded following a San Francisco 49ers-Oakland Raiders pre-season game on Saturday.

TODAY’S BEST ATHLETES… ASSOCIATED PRESS

Sidney Crosby’s agent Pat Brisson denied media reports yesterday that said the hockey phenom’s post-concussion symptoms had forced him to cancel all of his scheduled on-ice workouts.

CROSBY’S AGENT DISMISSES REPORTS OF SETBACKS

TORONTO (Canadian Press)

With a little over three weeks to go before the Pittsburgh Penguins are scheduled to open their training camp for 2011, Sidney Crosby’s status remains as uncertain as ever. Amid speculation the Penguins captain has suffered a setback in his recovery from post-concussion syndrome, Crosby’s agent released a statement yesterday to pour cold water on media reports. “Sidney hasn’t been shut down by anyone,” said agent Pat Brisson of CAA Sports. “He has simply adjusted his summer program accordingly to the different needs (required) for appropriate recovery.” Brisson indicated that Crosby will address the media at an “appropriate time” to provide an update on his condition. The 24-year-old hasn’t spoke to reporters since two days after the Penguins season ended in April. He last appeared in a game on Jan. 5, when he took a blow to the head for a second straight game and was

diagnosed with a concussion. Last week, Penguins general manager Ray Shero told reporters Crosby “has progressed really well this summer” and indicated the star centre was due to return to Pittsburgh for evaluation before the team opens training camp on Sept. 17. However, Shero stopped short of predicting whether Crosby would be in the lineup when the Penguins open the regular season in Vancouver on Oct. 6. “There is no expectation from me that he won’t be ready or he will be ready,” Shero said. On Monday night, CTV News reported Crosby had suffered a setback that forced him to cancel all of his scheduled on-ice workouts in a Halifax rink. Citing several unnamed sources, the network also said it appears unlikely that Crosby will attend the start of training camp – a claim Brisson took issue with. “Training camp is in three weeks from now,” he said. “It is too premature to speculate all kinds of deliberate information at this point. ... “As far as I know training camp hasn’t started yet.”

STAMPS EMERGE FROM BYE WEEK ON TOP OF CFL WEST CALGARY (Canadian Press)

The Calgary Stampeders are suddenly in the driver’s seat in the CFL’s West Division. The Stamps owned the best record in the West at 5-2 after their bye week. Calgary has a chance to strengthen their position Saturday when they host the Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium. Division rivals Edmonton, B.C. and Saskatchewan are all off this week. The Eskimos and Roughriders look like teams in disarray. While the Stampeders relaxed and healed injuries during their week off, the Esks lost their third in a row and the Roughriders sacked their head coach. Edmonton’s 36-1 thrashing at the hands of B.C., dropped them to 5-3 and allowed Calgary to claim first in the division. The Lions (2-6) are showing signs of life, but must dig themselves out of their early-season hole. The Riders fired Greg Marshall after losing to Toronto and dropping to 1-7. The Stampeders were aware of the drama happening elsewhere in their division, but kept it at arm’s length as they prepared to face the defending Grey Cup champions Saturday. “During the bye week, it was all oohs and aahs and surprising things (happening), but right now it’s back to business,” linebacker Juwan Simpson said yesterday. The Stampeders, winners of three in a row, scored more than 40 points for the first time this season Aug. 12 in Regina before commencing their eight-day break.

CANADA BEATS TAIWAN AT LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Canadian Press)

Canada is moving on to the next round at the Little League World Series after upsetting nemesis Taiwan in a must-win game. Yi-An Pan pitched five innings and added a home run yesterday in a 5-3 victory for the team from Langley, B.C. It’s the first time Canada has beaten a team from Taiwan at the tournament in 17 tries. “Less mistakes today,” said Canadian coach Jason Andrews. “We’ve got two wins so far this tournament, for a Canadian team, that’s the most we’ve had in a while. “We are starting to get more comfortable with the crowds. The kids seem less nervous. I’m less nervous as coach.” The victory improved Canada’s record to 2-1 and earned it a spot in the next round, where it will face Japan today after the defending champions beat Saudi Arabia 13-4. The loss eliminated Taiwan from the tournament. Pan allowed two earned runs on nine hits over five innings of work before leading off the top of the sixth with a homer to give Canada a two-run lead. Pan’s homer was Canada’s first of the tournament.

Yet he is in some need of another overpowering show, because his statistics over the past two years have not completely matched his braggadocio. CRITICISM GROWS AGAINST POPULAR INDIAN ACTIVIST NEW DELHI (Associated Press)

GAZA ROCKET FIRE PERSISTS DESPITE UNOFFICIAL TRUCE JERUSALEM (Associated Press)

Palestinian militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip launched rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel yesterday, despite an unofficial truce meant to defuse escalating exchanges of rocket fire and Israeli air strikes. Around mid-day, a group that had held out from joining the cease-fire announced it would comply. Even so, Palestinians launched two rockets into Israel a few hours later, the military said. They caused no injuries but damaged property and set a fire to a field. The latest round of violence began with a deadly attack on Israelis near the Egypt-Israel border on Thursday when gunmen who appear to have originated in Gaza and crossed into southern Israel through the Egyptian desert and ambushed vehicles, killing eight people. Six were civilians and two were members of Israeli security forces responding to the incursion. A Hamas official said yesterday that militant groups in Gaza agreed to the truce to end three days of clashes between Israel and Gaza militants. Hamas security personnel would enforce the Egyptbrokered agreement, he said.

Criticism mounted yesterday against an Indian activist’s hunger strike, with public figures saying it threatens democracy and verges on demagoguery, even as thousands crowded his protest demanding stronger anti-corruption legislation. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh – whose government has been beset by scandal – appeared to dismiss Anna Hazare’s demands, saying “there is no magic wand that can solve the problem in one stroke.” But the diminutive 73-year-old Hazare remained undaunted. Encouraged by TV cameras and thousands of chanting supporters, he has vowed to fast indefinitely until authorities pass his version of a bill – instead of the government’s draft – creating a powerful anti-corruption watchdog. He has faced little criticism since beginning his fast last Tuesday, but prominent activists have begun speaking out as his message gains traction in public debate. “The props and the choreography, the aggressive nationalism and flag waving ... signal to us that if we do not support The Fast, we

are not ‘true Indians,”’ Arundhati Roy, one of India’s best-known writers and activists, wrote yesterday in The Hindu newspaper. She bashed Hazare’s bill as “so flawed that it is impossible to take seriously,” saying that it ignores other prominent institutions like corporations and the media. Hazare – styling himself after Indian freedom fighter Mohandas K. Gandhi – has clearly touched a nerve in a country wearied by

13

rampant corruption. Everyone from poor rural farmers to urban middle-class professionals complain of having to pay bribes for basic services, including health care, school admission and registration of death. No one disputes Hazare’s essential message that corruption is harming India. But critics questioned his demand to give the proposed watchdog authority to investigate and prosecute top judges and the prime minister. In many democracies, judges and top elected officials have immunity while in office to protect them from politically motivated prosecutions.
