B.C. | Thirteen drivers, the oldest a mere 20-year-old, hold an impromptu 200 km/h, 13 car race on Highway 99 with Lamborghinis, Ferarris and Maseratis. Their punishment? A $196 fine and a seven-day impound. [3]
RIOT CROWD GATHERED EARLY, REVIEW FINDS TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)

Police impounded 13 luxury cars (combined value: nearly $3 million) after a race down Highway 99 on Wednesday.
Fewer than 500 police officers found themselves dealing with a crowd of 155,000 hockey fans and troublemakers who gathered much more quickly than they expected, a review of the Stanley Cup riot has found. Police started out with 446 officers on the streets of downtown Vancouver the night of June 15, and had 928 on duty by the time the situation was brought under control, said a report issued yesterday by two reviewers appointed by the B.C. government. Unlike the 1994 Stanley Cup riot, police from different cities were able to communicate, but due to a lack of practice working together, there was still confusion, the report said. The police “meet and greet” technique that was effective during similar downtown gatherings at the Olympics in February could not function because of the size and early arrival of the crowd, said Doug Keefe, the former Nova Scotia deputy minister who conducted the review along with former Vancouver Olympic CEO John Furlong. The report makes 53 recommendations to prevent or contain future incidents, including having the RCMP and Vancouver Police tactical squads train together. Furlong said downtown “live sites” such as those set up for home games of the Stanley Cup playoffs need to have secure fencing and control over coming and going.

TEENS IN SPEEDING LUXURY CARS FACE FINES TRACY HOLMES (Peace Arch News)
More than a dozen high-end vehicles spotted southbound on Highway 99 at speeds estimated at up to 200 km/h were seized in South Surrey and White Rock Wednesday. White Rock RCMP Const. Janelle Shoihet said police in the two communities were tasked to assist Deas Island RCMP, after the highway patrol fielded several complaints regarding the fast-paced vehicles coming out of the Massey Tunnel around 3:30 p.m. All 13 of the vehicles – a Ferrari, two Maserati Turismos, three Lamborghini Gallardos, an Audi R8, three Nissan GT-Rs, a Mercedes SL63, a Mercedes SLS and an Aston Martin DB9 – were travelling “well over the posted speed limit,” Shoihet said. It’s estimated the vehicles have a combined value of nearly $3 million. “Some of these, we’ve only seen in movies,” Shoihet said. Witnesses on the highway reported seeing on several occasions two of the luxury cars travelling side-by-side then slowing down to allow two other vehicles in front of them to race. Surrey RCMP stopped six of
the vehicles; White Rock officers stopped another seven. The drivers – all 20 years old and younger from Richmond and Vancouver, including 12 males and one female, according to police – face non-criminal charges of driving without due consideration for others. They are each to be fined $196, and their vehicles have been impounded for seven days. Police concede the penalties may not be enough of a deterrent
to prevent those involved from repeating their actions in the future. “It’s hard to say,” said Supt. Norm Gaumont, of the Lower Mainland Traffic Services. “You’re talking about young males, and obviously, they have a lot of money. “Hopefully, it’ll teach them a lesson.” Gaumont noted six of the 13 drivers cited did not have their full Class 5 licences, some displaying ‘N’s on the back of their vehicles.

One person is dead and another in hospital after being arrested following an incident yesterday at a Central Park area apartment complex. Burnaby RCMP said they received a call of a domestic dispute just before 6:30 a.m. When first responders arrived they found one female dead and another injured. The injured female was arrested but remained in hospital while being medically assessed. Police are not releasing the identities pending notification of next of kin.

MAPLE RIDGE NEWS (Black Press)
A suspicious fire destroyed Don Cherry’s Sports Grill in Maple Ridge Tuesday night. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion just before 7:30 p.m. and saw black smoke and flames coming from the old two-storey, 7,000-square-foot wooden structure. It took 40 firefighters 20 minutes to put it out, with most of the damage occurring on the south side of the pub, facing the Fraser River. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire and extent of damage hasn’t been determined yet.
RAW MILK FARM SEARCHED BY HEALTH OFFICIALS A search warrant was executed by health officials last week at the Chilliwack dairy farm at the centre of the raw milk controversy in B.C. Nothing was seized during the Aug. 25 search, but Fraser Health Authority spokesman Roy Thorpe-Dorward said photographs of the farm on Prairie Central Road are being reviewed to determine if a permanent court injunction issued last year against distribution of raw milk is being obeyed by the current farm owner. He said the search did not arise from any complaints, but a warrant was obtained after FHA officials were denied entry for a “routine inspection” on Aug. 12. Last year, after co-op co-founder Alice Jongerden was found in contempt of court for disobeying a court
injunction and distributing raw milk labelled “Not For Human Consumption” to shareholders, operations at the Home On The Range farm were handed over to Michael Schmidt, a raw milk advocate from Ontario, and re-named Our Cows. He continued distributing raw milk to investors in the “cowshare” co-op – not as food, but as a line of cosmetics, which falls under federal regulation. But in an interview Tuesday he said the herd is private property, owned by the shareholders, and what they do with the milk is none of the health authority’s business. “The FHA will say they anticipate that people will drink it,” he said. “I say it doesn’t matter what they do with it. “They can paint with it - or they can drink it, if it suits them.”

The demise of the harmonized sales tax may mean a seven-per-cent break for motorists who use Metro Vancouver pay parking lots – depending on what the province decides in the months ahead. TransLink tripled its tax on pay parking to 21 per cent in January 2010 and the switch to the HST that summer charged 12 per cent on top. The compounding effect means motorists currently pay an extra 35.5 per cent in tax at paid lots.

A downtown office building’s security team called Victoria police Monday afternoon when three employees suddenly fell ill at once. They complained of light-headedness, disorientation and numb limbs. A quick investigation found the source of the symptoms in the office fridge: brownies laced with marijuana. The employees were taken to hospital where a doctor confirmed the diagnosis was intoxication. The investigating officer talked to the staffer who brought the brownies. She explained she had been cleaning out her freezer, found the brownies and brought them to work to share. She said she wasn’t aware they were so-called special brownies. The officer went to the woman’s home and had a chat with her son. He admitted to baking the brownies a year ago and had forgotten their presence in the freezer. Police didn’t press charges against the son or mother, since there was no criminal intent. However, the son will likely be asked to take part in a restorative justice program.

LIBERAL MP QUESTIONS EI CENTRE SHUFFLE HALIFAX (Canadian Press)
A Liberal MP says Ottawa’s decision to preserve two small employment insurance processing centres in Nova Scotia ridings held by Tories amid a national downsizing plan is suspicious. Gerry Byrne, who represents Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte in western Newfoundland, says he suspects political interference by Defence Minister Peter MacKay, the regional minister for Nova Scotia. A spokesman for MacKay says the minister didn’t play a role in Service Canada’s decision to keep the centres open.
TREE-KILLING BEETLE HITS NEW BRUNSWICK KOUCHIBOUGUAC, N.B. (Canadian Press)
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the brown spruce longhorn beetle, an insect that kills spruce trees, has made its way to New Brunswick. The agency says it was found near a campground in Kouchibouguac National Park, likely transported there on firewood. Nova Scotia has been dealing with the insect for a few years and has imposed a ban on moving any spruce products from within a one-kilometre radius of where the beetle has been found.
ALBERTA MEETING HEALTH TARGETS, GOV’T SAYS EDMONTON (Canadian Press)
The Alberta government is giving itself high marks in meeting its targets for improving the health-care system. Health minister Gene Zwozdesky says the province has met 18 of the 19 benchmarks it set for the last fiscal year. That includes about 10,000 more surgeries – three times its original goal. Zwozdesky says the number of people stranded in emergency rooms without an acute care bed is down by half in Edmonton and by 80 per cent in Calgary.

In a year where weather in Canada and around the world made plenty of news, a federal fund is providing about $400,000 to the University of Manitoba to help develop a mobile atmospheric research system for severe weather study. It’s just one of $53 million in research projects announced in Winnipeg by Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology. Other projects at universities in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta will look for ways to help premature babies and suicidal teens and young adults.
QUEBEC REPORTS AT LEAST FOUR CASES OF WEST NILE QUEBEC (Canadian Press)
Quebec health officials say at least four people have been infected with the West Nile virus in the past month. They are also investigating a possible fifth case. Authorities say all the cases are in southwestern Quebec, including the greater Montreal area. The presence of the West Nile virus has also been detected in birds in the same regions. Authorities believe the temperature and recent heavy rain have contributed to the proliferation of mosquitoes, which carry the virus.

A California man has been sentenced to six years in prison for extorting sexually explicit photos from women and teenage girls whose computers he hacked. U.S. District Judge George King yesterday called the crimes committed by 32-year-old Luis Mijangos a form of cyber terrorism that inflicted great emotional distress on his victims. Authorities say Mijangos sent a virus to more than 100 computers and was able to read victims’ emails, watch them through their webcams and trick them into taking nude photos by posing as their boyfriends.
Police say they have arrested a businessman on charges of extorting money from PM Silvio Berlusconi in return for his co-operation in a probe over recruiting prostitutes to attend wild parties at Berlusconi’s home. Police arrested Giampaolo Tarantini and his wife yesterday. Tarantini has admitted he paid a high-end prostitute, Patrizia D’Addario, and other women to attend Berlusconi’s parties, but insists the PM didn’t know. Prosecutors said Tarantini had compelled Berlusconi to pay his family legal and housing costs in exchange for Tarantino’s co-operation in the prostitution investigation.
Brazilian officials say wildfires have burned about 2,400 square kilometres of land inside 17 national reserves since the start of the dry season. The government’s Chico Mendes conservation institute says about 1,600 firefighters and volunteers are struggling to control the flames. Officials say the dry season that began in June has been particularly bad this year, with less rainfall across the country and higher temperatures. Officials say the causes of the fires are often natural, such as lightning striking dry land.
San Jose police are looking for pedestrians and motorists who grabbed bags of marijuana that spilled onto the road from a truck that crashed. Police say the bystanders swooped in and grabbed most of the pot after the driver of the truck ran away from the accident early Wednesday morning. When officers arrived, they found a few remaining bags of marijuana and a loaded handgun inside the truck. Police are also looking for the truck’s driver. Neither the driver nor the people who took the marijuana have been identified. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
A top UN official says the famine in East Africa will worsen in coming months but that he hopes aid agencies will be able to reach more starving families. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres told reporters in the Kenyan capital yesterday that the crisis had not yet peaked. He says that rains will not come to the drought-stricken region until October. Even then it will take months before there is a harvest. Islamist rebels in southern Somalia have forbidden many aid agencies to work in areas under their control.

LOYALIST TRIBES ARE ARMED, WON’T SURRENDER: GADHAFI TRIPOLI, Libya (Associated Press)
Moammar Gadhafi warned from hiding yesterday that tribes loyal to him were well-armed and preparing for battle, hours after rebels hoping for a peaceful surrender extended the deadline for loyalist forces to give up in the longtime Libyan leader’s hometown. Gadhafi’s audio statement, broadcast by Syrianbased Al-Rai TV, came as the rebels said they were closing in on the former dictator. “We won’t surren“We won’t der again; we are not surrender again; we women, we will keep are not women, we will keep fighting.” fighting,” Gadhafi said. – Moammar Gadhafi His voice was recognizable, and Al-Rai has previously broadcast several statements by Gadhafi and his sons. Rebels have been hunting for the Libyan leader since he was forced into hiding after they swept into Tripoli on Aug. 20 and gained control of most of the capital after days of fierce fighting. Opposition fighters, backed by NATO air strikes, have been advancing toward three regime strongholds: Sirte; Bani Walid, 140 kilometres southeast of Tripoli; and Sabha, in the southern desert. All three places had been given a deadline of Saturday to surrender. While the deadline extension was officially only for Sirte, rebels said it would also include Bani Walid and Sabha. There has been speculation that Gadhafi is hiding in one of those three towns. Gadhafi’s wife, Safiya, sons Mohammed and Hannibal, and daughter Aisha fled to Algeria on Monday, firm evidence that the longtime leader has lost his grip on the country. Aisha gave birth to her fourth child Tuesday in Algeria.
The Algerian newspaper El Watan reported that Gadhafi himself also sought refuge, but the Algerian president refused to take his phone calls. Algeria’s foreign minister insisted yesterday that Gadhafi is not in Algeria. Asked on Europe-1 radio if Gadhafi could be given asylum, Mourad Medelci said, “I don’t believe so.” In Thursday’s message, Gadhafi said the tribes in Sirte and Bani Walid are armed and “there is no way they will submit.” He called for continued resistance, warning “the battle will be long and let Libya burn.”

RIGHTS CHIEF: EUROPEAN NATIONS HELPED U.S. TORTURE TERROR SUSPECTS BRUSSELS, Belgium (Associated Press)
Europe’s human rights chief launched a blistering attack yesterday on European governments’ counterterrorism actions, accusing them of helping the United States commit “countless” crimes in the past 10 years. “In attempting to combat crimes attributed to terrorists, countless further crimes have been committed in the course of the U.S.-led ‘global war on terror,’” he said in a statement. “Many of those crimes have been carefully and deliberately Thomas covered up.” Hammarberg European governments were “deeply complicit” in U.S. counterterrorism strategies, including torture, said Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe’s rights commissioner. In a 2007 probe, Swiss politician Dick Marty accused 14 European governments of permitting the CIA to run detention centres or carry out rendition flights between 2002 and 2005. The 47-nation Council of Europe believes more than a dozen European nations colluded in the CIA’s rendition program, in which suspects were secretly sent to be held in nations that allow torture.

President Barack Obama will deliver a rare address to a joint session of Congress next week to introduce a plan for jobs and economic growth, but not before being forced to yield in a test of wills with House Speaker John Boehner over when he would speak. and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. White House press secretary Jay Carney said the dust-up dramatizes why “people are fed up” with Washington. Carney said, “Our intention was merely for the president to address a joint session as soon as possible,” to outline his plan for revving up the economy and taking the unemployment problem on head-on. “Our interest is in not having a political back and forth here at all,” Carney told MSNBC in an interview.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Associated Press)
In the aftermath of the secret U.S. raid to kill Osama bin Laden, Pakistani officials want a detailed agreement spelling out U.S. rules of engagement inside Pakistan, officials in both countries say, but Washington’s refusal to sign a binding document threatens to create another point of friction in the long-troubled relationship. Pakistan military officials want the U.S. to sign what is called a “memorandum of understanding,” an agreement they want to include such details as the number of CIA operatives working in Pakistan, notification before drone strikes, intelligence gathered and a written promise about Pakistan’s role if al-Qaida’s new leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, is found in Pakistan. “There can be no more grey areas,” said a senior Pakistani military official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The surge in trouble this year between Pakistan and the U.S. began with the February killing of two Pakistanis by Raymond Davis, a CIA-contracted American spy working without Pakistan’s knowledge. The bin Laden raid further infuriated the Pakistani military, which saw it as a violation of sovereignty, and it now feels it needs the agreement to ensure it would be involved in any attacks in the future.

And once he read the first book in the series, he became a fan and was really into the project. “It kept me on the edge of my seat, I loved the book,” Kravitz says. “When I was reading it I had this whole world in my head and interestingly it’s very similar to what Gary Ross is actually doing. “I liked the role, I wanted to do more films and Gary

WALKING DEAD INSPIRES NEW SHOW FROM KEVIN SMITH
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
As every fan of The Walking Dead is aware, the zombie-apocalypse drama will return for its second season on Oct. 16. But AMC is announcing news that should bring delighted chills to any Dead devotee. The story resumes with the band of survivors fleeing zombie-overrun Atlanta and heading south for Fort Benning, Ga., where they hope to find refuge at the U.S. Army post. But the group doesn’t get far before meeting a new set of challenges on a desolate stretch of road. Dead, which first appeared as a comic, has now inspired its own companion piece, in the form of a new unscripted series aimed at comics “fanboys” of both genders. Secret Stash is a series from Kevin Smith, who also counts among his many ventures ownership of Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash comic book shop in Red Bank, N.J. Secret Stash will be set at Smith’s shop. There, the show promises to explore every nook and cranny of fanboy culture, with debates on arcane details of comic lore and the savouring of fanboy curios. The six one-hour episodes will air beginning in February, alongside the second half of the Walking Dead season.

LOST GIRL STAR DROPS INHIBITIONS TO PLAY SEDUCTIVE SUCCUBUS BO
CHER DEFENDS CHAZ BONO’S ROLE ON ‘DANCING’
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)
Cher is taking to Twitter to defend her son Chaz Bono. The superstar posted several tweets this week defending his participation on the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars. Bono is the first transgender competitor on the hit ABC show. Cher says her son, who was born female and underwent surgery to become a man, is being “viciously attacked” on blogs and message boards since the new cast was announced Monday. “This is Still America right? It took guts 2 do it,” Cher wrote, adding that she supports him no matter what he chooses to do. “Mothers don’t stop Getting angry with stupid bigots who (mess) with their children!” the 65-year-old singer wrote. Bono is paired with pro dancer Lacey Schwimmer on the reality show. Dancing fans have posted many comments. One called the casting choice “disgusting” and said “ABC should be ashamed of theirselves for harassing mainstream Americans and Christains.” Another wrote: “I never ... watch DWTS but will this season to support/vote for (Chaz).”
Getting intimate onscreen can be uncomfortable for even the most veteran professional actors. So imagine what it’s like for Canadian Lost Girl star Anna Silk, who frequently has to get cosy for the cameras in her role as Bo, a bisexual, seductive succubus who feeds off the energy from intimate moments. “I’ve learned that the best thing to do is to just go for it, otherwise the scene doesn’t work and you’re not doing the character any justice,” Silk, 37, said. “She’s a sexual creature – it’s who and what she is, there’s no way around it – so as the actor you just have to really embrace that and go for it. “And most of the guest stars seem pretty happy. If they’re going to come on the show and get killed, it’s by a kiss, so it’s not so bad.” Those kisses can be hazardous not just for the characters, but for the actors as well. During Silk’s screen test, she and co-star Kris Holden-Ried – who plays Bo’s love interest, Dyson – dented the wall during an
intense smooching scene, she said. “That was the first time I’d ever met him, it was in that room, and we just had really good chemistry ... Our kiss was pretty intense. I mean, there was a big crack in the wall.” Season 2 of Lost Girl premieres

Anna Silk plays Bo, a succubus, in the second season of Lost Girl.
Sunday on Showcase after a hit first season that ranked No. 1 on the channel for adults 25-54. In season 1, Bo discovers she is a succubus and part of the Fae, an ancient race of creatures who live amongst humans and feed off them in different ways. When Bo is asked to join either the Dark or Light clans, she takes the middle path between the Fae and humans, who she wants to protect. Helping her with her mission is Dyson as well as feisty Kenzi, played by Ksenia Solo, who recently got a Gemini Award nomination for the role. Silk said season 2 starts shortly after season 1 ended, with Bo finding her birth mother and running into trouble with Dyson. With its supernatural elements, relatable characters and sarcastic dialogue, Lost Girl is often compared to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Silk agrees with the comparison and notes Lost Girl appeals to a wide audience. “(Buffy) was kind of like your every girl, she just happened to be a vampire slayer, and that’s what I liked about Bo when I first read the script,” she said.

CANADA’S BIG 6 BANKS EARN $4.56B IN Q3 TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Canada’s six biggest banks earned a combined $4.56 billion in profits in the third quarter, about 11 per cent lower than a year ago as a billion-dollar writedown by Royal Bank diminished the industry tally. On Thursday, TD Bank was the final big bank to report its results for the quarter, with profits up 22 per cent compared with a year ago as the bank also raised its dividend for the second time this year. Because of the Royal Bank writedown, results for the most recent quarter came in below the $5.1-billion in profits reported in the same quarter of last year even though the latest earnings were stronger overall, particularly in domestic retail banking operations. TD said profits rose to $1.45 billion in the third quarter, or $1.58 per share, compared with $1.18 billion or $1.29 a share in the same period a year ago.
GM’S BATTERY POWERED VOLT ARRIVES IN CANADA OSHAWA, Ont. (Canadian Press)
GM’s new Chevrolet Volt is finally making its way into the hands of Canadian motorists. GM Canada president Kevin Williams released the first customer shipments of the vehicle in Canada at a ceremony yesterday in Oshawa, Ont. The Volt’s retail price in Canada starts at a manufacturer’s recommended $41,545. The Volt has an advertised range of 40 to 80 kilometres on battery alone before the generator kicks in to extend the vehicle’s range to 500 kilometres. Meanwhile, Nissan Canada has begun selling its completely battery-powered Leaf passenger car to fleet customers here and started taking reservations from Canadian consumers in late August. ADD YOUR

NHL SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS AFTER LATEST PLAYER DEATH
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
A feeling of disbelief began giving way to introspection as the hockey world sought to come to terms with the loss of a third NHL tough guy in a matter of months. Wade Belak’s apparent suicide in a downtown Toronto hotel and condo sent shockwaves through the hockey community, prompting the NHL and NHL Players’ Association to launch an immediate review of its programs to determine “whether concrete steps can be taken to enhance player welfare and minimize the likelihood of such events taking place.” Belak’s death closely followed those of New York Rangers forward Derek Boogaard and Winnipeg Jets forward Rick Rypien. However, unlike those men, the 35-yearold gave off no signs of trouble prior to being found dead on Wednesday afternoon. “From what I understand right now, there were no warning signs,” NHLPA special advisor Mathieu Schneider said yesterday in an interview. “Maybe we’ll learn something different over the next few weeks. But everyone that I’ve heard from so far is just in shock.” The alarming news left plenty of questions unan-
swered: Could anything have been done to prevent it? Is there a connection between the difficult job all three players performed on the ice and the tragedies that claimed them? Should the role of fighting in the NHL be re-examined? “There was a bunch of us actually golfing yesterday and as soon as we found out, you stop right away and think: ‘This is the third guy already this summer,”’ said Maple Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn. “It’s hard to grasp and see why it’s happening.” Fighting has long been considered the toughest job in hockey, but it is bound to be closely scrutinized with three enforcers dying over a heartbreaking four-month span. Phoenix Coyotes tough guy Paul Bissonnette understands why some have drawn a link between the demanding job and string of tragedies. “Just playing that very limited role, in and out of the lineup, you feel worthless,” said Bissonnette. “I could see where that would probably wear on guys along with the fighting and getting hit in the head constantly. “The amount of mind games we play with ourselves is very high and that’s what people need to realize.”

CANUCKS CAN WIN THE BIG PRIZE THIS YEAR: GILLIS VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
When the Vancouver Canucks signed STAY forward Marco Sturm on the first day of NHL free agency many people believed THE it was just the appetizer. COURSE The main course, the impact player that would mend some of the tears shown during the Canucks’ Stanley Cup loss, would be added during the summer. With training camp just over two weeks away Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis doesn’t see any major trades or signings on the horizon. He believes the team that lost Game 7 to the Boston Bruins has the talent and desire to win the Stanley Cup this season. “We think we have a really strong team,” Gillis said yesterday. “We don’t really see a tremendous weakness. “Of course there are certain players that you would love to have that are on other teams and (you) think they would fit in well here. They are impossible to get at this point. We are really confident in the group we have.” Gillis remains open to any deals that might come along. “If something comes our way between now and the start of the season we are going to act upon it,” he said. “You can’t manufacture it. “It’s either there or not there.” The last two teams to play in back-to-back finals were Pittsburgh and Detroit in 2008 and 2009. Prior to that the last team to play for the Cup two years in a row was New Jersey in 2000 (beat Dallas) and 2001 (lost to Colorado).
ESKIMOS PLANT SAUCY BILLBOARD IN CALGARY CALGARY (Canadian Press)
The Edmonton Eskimos have fired a cheeky shot across the bow of the Calgary Stampeders ahead of Monday’s Labour Day game between the two clubs. The Eskimos bought add space on a billboard at a McMahon Stadium parking lot. The billboard depicts an Edmonton Eskimo fan riding astride a Calgary Stampeder fan like a horse. “EE-Hawwww! See you Monday Stamps fans,” it says with the words “No Stampeder fans were (physically) harmed in the making of this billboard” across the bottom. The billboard and its location on the Stampeders’ doorstep are an audacious salvo from the Eskimos (5-3), who are chasing the Stampeders (6-2) for the CFL’s West Division lead. Edmonton has lost three games in a row, while the Stamps are winners of four straight. The Stampeders were mildly amused by the billboard, and they weren’t about to show the Eskimos were getting under their skin ahead of an important game. “It’s probably reverse psychology,” defensive lineman DeVone Claybrooks said. “They’re the ones who are in the slump and we’re the ones riding a wave right now. It probably adds motivation for them as well. If your dad says ‘my son’s going to kick your tail’ then the son has to back it up.”

INSURER WON’T PAY FOR ‘MIRACLE’ HOCKEY SHOT
LONDON (Associated Press)
Anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said that its massive archive of unredacted U.S. State Department cables had been exposed in a security breach which it blamed on its one-time partner, Britain’s Guardian newspaper. In a 1,600-word-long editorial posted online in the early hours of Thursday morning, WikiLeaks accused the Guardian’s investigative reporter David Leigh of divulging the password needed to decrypt the files in a book published earlier this year. The Guardian and Leigh both denied wrongdoing. WikiLeaks said in its statement that Leigh had “recklessly, and without gaining our approval, knowingly disclosed the decryption passwords” in his book on the organization, published by the Guardian back in February. WikiLeaks said that knowledge of the leaked passwords had been spreading privately for months, but the organization was forced to come out with a statement after news of the breach began spilling into the press. U.S. officials have previously said that the disclosure of the entire unredacted archive could have potentially serious consequences for informants, activists and others quoted in the cables.
