STRIKE NOTICE HANGS OVER FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
JOB CUTS FIGHT LOOMS, LABOUR LEADERS WARN HALIFAX (Canadian Press)
VICTORIA (Canadian Press)
B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Education Minister George Abbott chose a Vancouver school playground to highlight the start of the new school year, which will see the return this morning of more than 540,000 students. Clark and Abbott promised the Liberal government will spend $8 million to build and upgrade school playgrounds around the province to ensure students have more safe, happy, play spaces. A somewhat bemused B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert said playgrounds are welcome additions to B.C. schools, but with teachers in a legal strike position on the first day of school, the government’s decision to focus on playgrounds appears “myopic.” “Almost to the point of Nero fiddling while Rome’s burning,” said Lambert. “I’m not saying that playgrounds don’t need attention – they absolutely do – but right now we’ve got a bigger issue in front of us.”

Premier Christy Clark promised yesterday to spend $8 million to build and upgrade school playgrounds. Students won’t be greeted by picket lines, but teachers will not be supervising those playgrounds or doing many of the other jobs they normally do above teaching as a form of strike action. Teachers are an essential service under B.C. labour law and while they have limited rights to conduct job action, they can’t legally shut down the entire school system. The five-year contract between the BCTF and B.C. Public School Employers’ Association giving teachers an average 16-per-cent pay raise
and $4,700 bonus expired on June 30. The teachers, who have yet to table their new wage demands, say they want a raise because their pay has fallen to eighth-place from third in Canada. Teachers also want more say in the size and composition of classrooms. The employer disputes the eighth-place ranking, saying B.C. teacher wages have dropped to fourth in Canada from third during the last contract or seventh in the country from sixth depending on which provincial scales are used.

Staving off deep job cuts and protecting workers’ rights will be the main battlefronts for labour groups in the coming months, union leaders said yesterday as they gear up for widespread losses in the public sector. At Labour Day rallies across the country, labour leaders hammered the federal government for ordering postal and airline employees back to work, and pledging to balance the budget likely through job losses. Ken Georgetti, head of the Canadian Labour Congress, said Ottawa’s plan to balance the books by 2014 will likely result in thousands of job losses at a time of already high unemployment and generous corporate tax cuts. “Putting more people on the unemployment lines doesn’t make any sense,” he said during a rally in Halifax, adding that creating and protecting jobs are labour’s priorities. “These tax cuts haven’t worked and public servants shouldn’t have to pay for them with their jobs.” In Ottawa, federal government employee Chantal Fortin said the public needs to be aware of possible cuts to the public service. She said cuts would mean longer waits for access to taxpayer-funded services. “Protecting public service is the difference between waiting five minutes to speak to somebody on the phone or waiting a half hour,” she said. The Tories promised to balance the federal budget by 2014 and has asked 68 departments to offer up scenarios for five and 10 per cent reductions to their bottom lines over a three-year period.

Former premier Gordon Campbell is among the recipients of the Order of B.C., prompting protests against the move as well as congratulations for his long career in politics. Online petitions and other protests started popping up when Campbell was announced Friday as one of 14 recipients of the province’s highest award. Critics complained that previous premiers such as Dave Barrett and Mike Harcourt have not received it, while former premier Bill Bennett was named to the order in 2005, more than a decade after he left office. Campbell resigned his seat in March and has since been appointed Canada’s High Commissioner for the United Kingdom. Fuelling the backlash was the selection of Campbell’s long-time deputy Ken Dobell to the Order of B.C. class of 2011. After a long career as Vancouver city manager and then deputy to Campbell in the premier’s office, Dobell was given an absolute discharge in 2008 for what a judge called a “trivial” breach of B.C.’s lobbyist law while working as a consultant on the 2010 Olympics.
Another controversial choice for the award is David Emerson, a former senior B.C. bureaucrat who went on to serve in two federal cabinets. Emerson is best remembered for crossing the floor of the House of Commons to the Conservatives to accept a cabinet post, after winning a narrow election victory for the Liberals in Vancouver-Kingsway in the 2006 federal
election. The Order of B.C. is selected by a committee chaired by Chief Justice Lance Finch of the B.C. Supreme Court, and including B.C. legislature speaker Bill Barisoff, Union of B.C. Municipalities president Barbara Steele and John Furlong, former head of the 2010 Olympics and a member of the Order of B.C.

2011 A SLOW YEAR FOR WILDFIRES: PROVINCE VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
BC NEWS WATCH
The B.C. government is calling this summer the slowest fire season in a decade. Fire information officer Alyson Couch says B.C. has experienced about 500 wildfires to date this summer, compared to 1,500 over the same period of time last year. She says as a result the province has been able to send about 2,000 firefighters to other Canadian provinces and U.S. states. She says last summer the province spent more than $100 million on fighting wildfires compared to about $50 million this year.

POACHING CASE TENTATIVELY THROWN OUT LAKE COWICHAN GAZETTE (Black Press)
A poacher-related court case has been tentatively thrown out, due to it taking too long to go to trial. Judge Josiah Wood gave four people accused of poaching at Cowichan Lake, September of 2009, a judicial stay of proceedings during their August 30, pre-trial arguments at the Duncan Law Courts. “The judge ended the proceedings because they had taken too long to go to court,” acting communications council Samantha Hulme said. Judge Wood felt that the delay infers prejudice for the accused, and that it’s been hard for the accused to have had the trial over their heads for so long. The crown is currently considering an appeal. “That’s the end of it. It’s all over unless the council
appeals, and wins the appeal,” Hulme said. The accused include Li Bo Cao (born 1970), Jing Pu Chen (born 1964), Shang Jun Han (born 1976), and Wei Guang Wang (born 1963). The trial took so long to go to trial for two reasons, including a change in judge and subsequent re-scheduling of a trial date, and the fact that the four accused speak Cantonese. “Interpreters slow the trial proceedings down a bit,” Hulme said. Charges between the four accused include unlawful possession of dead wildlife; hunting, taking, trapping, wounding, or killing wildlife out of season; and caring for or possessing a loaded firearm in a conveyance.

Airline officials say flight attendants spotted a mouse in the pantry of a Boeing 757, prompting Nepal Airlines to cancel a Bangkok-bound flight, evacuate passengers and tow the jet to a hangar to hunt for the rodent. Airline spokesman Raju K.C. says the mouse is believed to have boarded the plane at the Kathmandu airport yesterday through a food catering truck. The cabin crew unsuccessfully hunted the mouse and then decided to cancel the flight and perform a more thorough search. The airline says the plane will not be used again until the mouse is found.
The United Nations says famine has spread into one more region of Somalia, meaning half of the country’s south is now suffering from famine. A UN press release issued yesterday says four of southern Somalia’s eight regions now are affected by famine. The release says 750,000 people are at risk of death in the next four months if there is no adequate response. The release says 4 million Somalis are now in crisis. Somalia has been hit hardest by a recent, devastating drought that swept through East Africa. Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti are also affected.
Hackers who broke into a web security firm issued hundreds of bogus security certificates for spy agency websites including the CIA as well as for Internet giants like Google, Microsoft and Twitter, the Dutch government says. Tech experts say they suspect the hackers were probably co-operating with the Iranian government, and hundreds of thousands of private communications between Iranian Internet users and Google were likely monitored in August. SSL security certificates are used to authenticate websites and guarantee that links between a user’s browser and a website are secure.
China says it seized about 13 million illegal video, music and print products over the past year in a campaign to tackle fakes and copyright theft. The official Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday that 663 shops producing pirated products, including movies, music CDs, software and books, were shut down from late last year to June. China has struggled to deal with rampant piracy and the widespread production of bogus goods. Cracking down on such violations has long been a key demand from foreign businesses in China.

Thousands of rebels have now reached on Bani Walid, a desert town some 140 kilometres southeast of Tripoli. Gadhafi himself has been on the run since losing his capital last month. The rebels have extended to Saturday a deadline for the surrender of Gadhafi’s hometown of Sirte and other loyalist areas, but some have warned they could attack Bani Walid sooner because many prominent former regime officials were believed to be inside. The scene was calm early yesterday, with rebels brewing tea and lighting morning cigarettes, at a checkpoint about 70 kilometres from Bani Walid’s centre. Then a convoy of nine trucks arrived, flying the independence-era tricolour the rebels have adopted. As his men fired rifles into the air and shouted “God is great!” commander Ismail al-Gitani said they were part of a larger force and that he was ordered to rein-
force the northern approaches to Bani Walid. He refused to say how many fighters he had brought. “We won’t go inside Bani Walid unless the Warfala tribe invites us,” he said, referring to Bani Walid’s main tribe. “The Warfala have to lead us into Bani Walid. Hopefully no one will be shot. We don’t want to use our weapons. But if the Gadhafi loyalists shoot at us, of course we will return fire.”

U.S. President Barack Obama used a boisterous Labour Day rally yesterday in Detroit to put congressional Republicans on the spot, challenging them to place the country’s interests above all else and vote to create jobs and put the economy back on a path toward growth. “Show us what you’ve got,” he said. Obama said roads and bridges nationwide need rebuilding and more than 1 million unemployed construction workers are itching to “get dirty” making the repairs. He portrayed Congress as an obstacle to getting that work done. Barack Obama “We’re going to see if we’ve got some straight shooters in Congress. We’re going to see if congressional Republicans will put country before party,” he said. Congress returns from its summer recess this week and the faltering economy and jobs shortage are expected to be a dominant theme. Besides spending on public works, Obama said he wants pending trade deals passed to open new markets for U.S. goods. He also said he wants Republicans to prove they’ll fight as hard to cut taxes for the middle class as they do for profitable oil companies and the wealthiest Americans.

WAYWARD PENGUIN SENT HOME FROM NEW ZEALAND WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Associated Press)
He needed a little push before speeding backward down a makeshift slide. Once in the water, he popped his head up for one last look. And then he was gone. The wayward emperor penguin known as “Happy Feet” was back home in Antarctic waters after an extended sojourn spent capturing hearts in New Zealand. Happy Feet was released into the ocean south of New Zealand on Sunday, more than two months after he came ashore on a beach nearly 3,000 kilometres from home and Happy Feet was became an instant celebrity. released into the Speaking from a satelocean on Sunday, lite phone aboard the two months after research vessel Tangahe arrived in New roa, Wellington Zoo Zealand – 3,000 km veterinarian Lisa away from home. Argilla said Happy Feet’s release went remarkably smoothly given that the boat was being tossed about in 25-foot swells in the unforgiving Antarctic ocean. Argilla said crew members from the boat carried the penguin inside his custom-built crate to the stern of the ship for his final send-off about 90 kilometres north of remote Campbell Island. The crew had already cut the engines and put in place a canvas slide that they soaked with water from a hose. But when they opened the door of the crate, the penguin showed no interest in leaving.
“I needed to give him a little a tap on his back,” Argilla said. The penguin slipped down the slide on his stomach, bottom first, she said. He resurfaced about 2 metres from the boat, took a look up at the people aboard, and then disappeared beneath the surface. “I was really happy to see him go,” Argilla said. “The best part of my job is when you get to release animals back into the wild where they are supposed to be.” The 3-foot-tall aquatic bird was found June 20 on Peka Peka Beach, about 65 kilometres northwest of Wellington. It had been 44 years since an emperor penguin was last spotted in the wild in New Zealand. Now that Happy Feet has been nursed back to health, Argilla said his chances are as good as they are for any other penguin in the wild. “He swam away, not caring about us anymore,” Argilla said. “And that’s a good thing.”

WILDFIRE DESTROYS NEARLY 500 HOMES NEAR TEXAS CAPITAL
BASTROP, Texas (Associated Press)
A roaring wildfire raced unchecked yesterday through rain-starved farm and ranchland in Texas, destroying nearly 500 homes during a rapid advance fanned in part by howling winds from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee. At least 5,000 people were forced from their homes in Bastrop County east of Austin, many of them fearing the worst while spending the night in emergency shelters. Huge clouds of smoke soared into the sky and hung over downtown Bastrop, a town of about 6,000 people along the Colorado River. The blaze consumed as much as 25,000 acres along a line that stretched for about 25 km, Texas Forest Service officials said. It destroyed 476 homes and about 250 firefighters were working around the clock, using bulldozers and pumper trucks against the fire. Authorities mobilized ground and air forces to fight the largest of at least 63 fires that broke out in Texas since Sunday as high winds from what was then Tropical Storm Lee swept into Texas, which has endured its worst drought since the 1950s. “It’s still putting up a lot of smoke and it’s scary,” Jan Amen, a Texas Forest Service spokeswoman said. LEWIS ‘RETIRED’ FROM MDA TELETHON: HOST
LAS VEGAS (Associated Press)
American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said after co-hosting the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon Sunday night that he’s sorry comedian Jerry Lewis didn’t participate, but the organization needs to move on to ensure the fundraiser continues. Lythgoe said minutes after the six-hour live broadcast ended on the east coast that he thought the 85-year-old actor would show up either during the telecast or earlier to film a taped segment of his signature song You’ll Never Walk Alone. “I was fully expecting him to turn up at any point and join that six hours – and I’m sorry he didn’t,” Lythgoe said. “And hopefully another year he might. I mean, he knows that he is always welcome on the telethon. It’s his baby.” An orchestra was ready to film Lewis, but he didn’t come to the Las Vegas casino where the telethon was filmed, Lythgoe said. Lewis publicist Candi Cazau declined comment. Earlier, she said Lewis never agreed to any appearance – recorded or live – after the MDA announced in August he wouldn’t take part in the show or be its chairman. Lythgoe and co-host Jann Carl said during the show that Lewis “retired.”

‘THE HELP’ PUTS IN OVERTIME TO KEEP TOP WEEKEND SPOT
LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)
The Help stayed on the job over Labour Day, finishing as the No. 1 film for the third-straight weekend. The acclaimed drama about Southern black maids speaking out during the civilrights movement took in $19 million US over the long holiday weekend, according to studio estimates yesterday. That raised the film’s domestic total to $123.4 million. A DreamWorks Pictures release distributed by Disney, The Help has been a triumph amid a rush of late-summer duds that ended Hollywood’s busiest season. Another batch of new movies this weekend packed in modest to small crowds. Best among the newcomers was Focus Features’ Holocaust-revenge thriller The Debt at No. 2 with $12.6 million from Friday to Monday. The Weinstein Co. sci-fi horror tale Apollo 18 opened at No. 3 with $10.7 million. Another fright flick, Relativity Media’s Shark Night 3D, debuted at No. 4 with $10.3 million. Pantelion Films’ action comedy Saving Private Perez debuted with $830,000, while Samuel Goldwyn Films’ sex comedy A Good Old Fashioned Orgy opened with just $153,000.
COLIN FIRTH HAPPY PLAYING SUPPORT ROLE IN ‘TINKER TAILOR’ VENICE, Italy (Associated Press)
Best Actor Oscar winner Colin Firth says he was all too happy to step aside and take a supporting actor role for his “meaty” new part in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. “It was great to have something that was meaty enough to get my teeth into, but let other people do the heavy lifting.” Firth told journalists at the Venice Film Festival yesterday. “It’s basically all I did last year and it suited me very well.” Firth – who won the Oscar for The King’s Speech and was nominated for the same award for A Single Man – plays the calm, collected intelligence agent Bill Haydon, a counterpoint character to the film’s lead Gary Oldman, playing the main character, retired spy George Smiley. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, directed by Tomas Alfredson – the Swedish director of 2008 vampire film Let the Right One In – is among entries vying for the top “Golden Lion” prize at the festi-
val’s conclusion this Saturday. Alfredson’s interpretation of the John Le Carre Cold War spy yarn is a slow-brewing, elegant retelling of the classic novel.
VENICE FILM FEST
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Colin Firth arrives for the photo call for the movie Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy yesterday at the Venice Film Festival.
But will audiences fall for a subtly paced spy drama that unravels to reveal betrayal and retribution without the sexy antics of a James Bond film, or the action packed scenes of a Bourne Identity? “There is a tendency to underestimate audiences,” Firth said at a news conference. “People don’t just want ‘slash and burn’ – so I am optimistic about (the film) having an enormous audience.” Audiences may be surprised that Firth opted for a supporting role – and less on screen time – given his domination of the screen as Britain’s King George VI in The King’s Speech. Likewise, in A Single Man in 2009, Firth’s character, a homosexual contemplating suicide after the death of his lover, monopolizes the story – a performance that won him best actor honour that year in Venice. Oldman’s mannered performance as Smiley offers an anchor in this complex whodunit that focuses on the inner-workings of the UK’s elite M16 intelligence agency, which needs to cover up – or prove – the existence of a highly placed Soviet mole. NEXT-GEN WORKERS FACE BLEAK FUTURE, OFL SAYS TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Canada could face a labour shortage within ďŹ ve years as baby boomers retire, even as a younger generation of workers confronts a “bleakâ€? future full of part-time jobs with poor pay and little or no pensions, union leaders warned Sunday on the eve of the Labour Day holiday. Ontario Federation of Labour president Sid Ryan said he’s worried graduating university students won’t ďŹ nd good jobs so they can pay off student loans and build a future. “The kids today cannot look forward to full-time, decent paying jobs where you can afford a mortgage, a car,â€? said Ryan. “We are fearful for young workers getting in right now. They want to pay new hires lower wages and offer deďŹ ned-contribution pension plans – a controversial, lower-cost alternative to traditional deďŹ ned-beneďŹ t plans, Ryan said. Similar demands were at the heart of recent strikes at US Steel in Hamilton, Vale Inco in Sudbury and by CAW members and postal workers.

Canadian taxpayers have shelled out almost $200,000 for two federal surveys that asked virtually the same questions – and got the same answers. The duplication occurred when the Privy Council OfďŹ ce and the Finance Department each ordered focus-group surveys within six weeks of one another last winter. The pollster Ipsos Reid, who collected $76,000 for the ďŹ rst survey and $110,000 for the second, conducted focus-group sessions in cities across Canada to gauge attitudes about the economy.

EDMONTON WINS ALBERTA’S CFL LABOUR DAY CLASSIC
CALGARY (Canadian Press)
The Edmonton Eskimos vaulted into first place in the CFL’s West Division with a 35-7 win over the Calgary Stampeders in yesterday’s Labour Day game. Calgary and Edmonton were tied atop the division at 6-3, but the Eskimos are now ranked higher because they’re 2-0 versus the Stampeders this season. The two clubs meet in their regular-season finale Friday in Edmonton. Edmonton halted a three-game losing skid with the win, while Calgary saw its string of victories end at four. Edmonton backup quarterback Kerry Joseph, Andrew Nowacki and Adarius Bowman scored touchdowns for the visitors in front of an announced sellout of 35,650 on a hot, sunny day at McMahon Stadium. Derek Schiavone kicked field goals from 46, 20, 42 and 22 yards and punter Damon Duval had singles from 79 and 67. Nik Lewis scored Calgary’s lone touchdown in the first quarter. After he was named the CFL’s offensive player of the month for August, Calgary quarterback Henry Burris had a miserable start to September with two
fumbles and two interceptions that Edmonton converted into 24 points. Burris completed 13 of 23 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown, after compiling over 400 passing yards last week versus Montreal. Drew Tate completed a pass on three attempts for 19 yards in the fourth quarter Edmonton’s Ricky Ray was 14-for-21 for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Joseph was 3-for-4 for 36 yards and third-stringer Eric Ward competed one pass for a yard. But Edmonton’s defence made the difference as it held a Calgary offence that had averaged 38 points per game in their last three to one converted touchdown. The Esks also stopped the bleeding on their offensive line. After giving up 18 sacks over their three previous games, the Stampeders recorded none on Ray. Eskimos linebacker Greg Peach was an impact player on his return from a knee injury suffered the last time the two teams met July 23 in Calgary. The Vancouver, Wash., native forced a fumble and recovered another that led to a pair of touchdowns for the visitors. Bowman, who, like Peach, had been out since the July 23 game with a rib injury, scored on a 31-yard catch at 14:12 of the third quarter to put Edmonton up 32-7.

B.C. WOMEN BREAK HOCKEY RECORD BURNABY (Canadian Press)
Forty women in British Columbia have set an unofficial world record for the lon243 gest ice-hockey game ever after playing HOUR for 10 days straight. The women, who were raising money GAME for cystic fibrosis research, broke the previous record by 65 minutes Monday morning at the Burnaby 8 Rinks arena. After the game, red roses littered the ice and referees hugged exhausted players. “They’re mentally exhausted, they’re physically exhausted and their bodies have absolutely taken a toll over the last 10 days,” Meagan Wong, a volunteer organizer, told 1130 News. “You know 243 hours is equivalent to three NHL seasons.” According to the Guinness World Records website, the longest marathon ice-hockey game currently on record took place in Sherwood Park, Alta., this past February and lasted 242 hours. The most recent Burnaby effort was the culmination of more than two years of planning by organizers who wanted to raise funds to battle cystic fibrosis, a disease that causes lungs to fill with fluid. After the referees dropped the puck Aug. 26, the women played in four-hour shifts and camped out in RVs and tents in the arena’s parking lot. By the end of the 10-day game, the women had scored more than 2,500 goals and raised more than $125,000 of their $400,000 goal. “Everyone’s learned a lot about what they can do, physically and emotionally,” Valerie Skelly, another organizer, told CTV News. “None of us knew how difficult it was going to be, and it turns out that it was really difficult.” Tom Evans, a spokesman for Vancouver’s chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada, called the women “heroes” and said the awareness they raised about the disease was “priceless.”
COBOURNE LEADS TI-CATS OVER ALS HAMILTON, Ont. (Canadian Press)
Avon Cobourne rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns and the Hamilton defence held Montreal’s offence to just seven points as the Tiger-Cats hammered the Alouettes 44-21 yesterday. Backup quarterback Quinton Porter added two TDs on the ground and starter Kevin Glenn threw for 237 yards and another score through the air as Hamilton (5-4) moved into a tie for second spot in the East Division with Montreal (5-4). The Ticats now hold a two-game advantage in the head-tohead tiebreaker should it be needed to determine playoff seedings. The clubs meet in Montreal again next week and in October. Hamilton won the first meeting 34-26 at home on July 29. Maurice Mann caught Glenn’s touchdown for Hamilton, while receiver Chris Williams hauled in five passes for 108 yards. De’Audra Dix scored Montreal’s first touchdown on a fumble return on the game’s first play from scrimmage and fellow defensive back Dwight Anderson returned a Porter interception 50 yards for a TD with 4:45 left in the game.

LULAY SPARKS LIONS TO 29-16 WIN OVER ARGOS TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Travis Lulay threw a touchdown pass and ran for another as the B.C. Lions earned a 29-16 win over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night. B.C. (3-6) earned its sixth victory in seven trips to Rogers Centre since 2005 and won for the third time in four games since starting the season 0-5. The Lions, coming off the bye following a 36-1 road win over Edmonton on Aug. 19, host Toronto on Sept. 10 to complete the home-
and-home series. Lulay’s five-yard run at 7:36 of the third capped a smart nine-play, 68-yard drive that put B.C. ahead 20-6 before a Rogers Centre gathering of 19,593. The Lions claimed their first win over an East Division opponent in five meetings this year and also won for the first time in nine Labour Day meetings (1-7-1) with the Argos. Lulay was 25-of-36 passing for 309 yards with a TD and no interceptions. Toronto (2-7) lost for the seventh time in eight games but made it interesting with Chad Owens’ 91-yard kickoff return TD at 8:15 of the fourth to pull to within 26-16. Then the home team stopped B.C. on a third-down gamble at the Argos’ 41
11
with 3:44 remaining. But Toronto turned the ball over on downs at the B.C. 52-yard line with 2:38 remaining, leading to a Lions’ field goal and a 29-16 lead at 13:27. The Argos were abysmal offensively coming off their 24-18 home win over Saskatchewan on Aug 18. Owens had a club-record 245 kickoff return yards while the two teams combined for 423 kickoff return yards and combined 13 kickoff returns, both league records. Again Cleo Lemon started well and was 11-of-15 passing in the opening half, but for just 57 yards. Backup Dalton Bell started the third and surrendered four interceptions that the Lions converted into 13 points.

Choking advisory | Canadian and U.S. health officials are advising consumers to stop allowing their children to use the Twirlla Wooden Rattle because it can break and pose a choking hazard. recently with outraged commenters on Amazon, where pre-orders haven’t propelled Maggie anywhere near the top of the rankings. There’s now a “savemaggie” hashtag on Twitter, a “Say No to Maggie Goes on a Diet” Facebook page, calls for a boycott and demands that Amazon and Barnes & Noble pull the book. Kramer won’t disclose how many orders he has for Maggie, which isn’t out until October. Kramer, who went on Good Morning America to defend the book, already has regrets, though using the word “diet” isn’t one of them. Diet, he said, isn’t a dirty word as many of his angry critics have declared. He insists he didn’t have four-year-olds in mind, thinking more along the lines of eight and up. “I regret that people associated
BOOK FEATURING OBESE TEEN MET WITH OUTRAGE NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Messages of good health and positive self-esteem for girls aren’t hard to come by in kid lit, so what’s the deal with all the attention for a not-yet-published rhyming picture book about an obese 14-year-old named Maggie? The title, for starters: Maggie Goes on a Diet. Another reason: online circulation of a blurb describing how the bullied girl is transformed through time, exercise and hard work into a popular, confident and average size soccer star. And cover
art showing her wistfully holding up a Cinderella dress as she stares at her imagined, much slimmer self in a fulllength mirror. And an inside page, the only one most people have seen, that shows her hunched over the fridge during a two-fisted eating binge. Thirds? Teenagers have moved on from rhyming picture books and the reading level for Paul Kramer’s selfpublished effort is recommended on Amazon for kids ages four to eight. The online mess for Kramer began
the word ‘diet’ as me trying to push dieting on four-year-olds and six-yearolds. I’m not,” Kramer said. “To me, diet means a change of habits, eating nutritiously, losing unhealthy weight.” Leslie Sanders, medical director of the Eating Disorder Program at Goryeb Children’s Center in Summit, N.J., thinks Kramer’s references to dieting in a rhyming picture book featuring a teen girl are unfortunate. “There’s a mismatch here,” Sanders said. “You’ve got a rhyming book you’re reading to a four-year-old or a six-yearold about a teenager focused on weight and eating. Why should young children be thinking about weight? There’s no reason to have literature about dieting for young children at all.”

The push to get pediatricians to stop prescribing antibiotics for the wrong illnesses is paying off a bit, a new report has found. Since the early 1990s, there’s been a 10 per cent drop in prescription rates for antibiotics for American kids 14 and younger, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last week. Antibiotics are often used against viral illnesses like colds and flu. Antibiotics fight infections caused by bacteria. Misuse can lead to antibiotic resistance. Experts say doctors inappropriately prescribe antibiotics more than 50 per cent of the time, and more often with respiratory infections. The CDC found larger declines – about 25 per cent – in how often doctors used antibiotics against sore throats, colds and some other upper respiratory infections. But there was no significant change in how often they prescribed the drugs for ear infection, bronchitis and sinusitis. The new findings represent progress, but also suggest that doctors are still prescribing antibiotics too often, said Dr. Lauri Hicks, a CDC epidemiologist who worked on the study. “The bad news is we still have a long way to go,” she said.

ROMAN GLADIATOR SCHOOL UNVEILED IN AUSTRIA PETRONELL-CARNUNTUM, Austria (AP)
IRANIAN POLICE BATTLE ‘SINISTER’ WATER GUN FIGHT TEHRAN, Iran (Associated Press)
Iran is trying to put down a new wave of civil disobedience – flash mobs of young people who break into boisterous fights with water guns in public parks. A group of water fighters was arrested over the weekend, and a top judiciary official warned yesterday that “counterrevolutionaries” were behind them. Police swooped in to arrest a number of people who had gathered on Friday in a Tehran park to hold a water fight, the acting commander of Iran’s police Gen. Ahmad Radan said, quoted in newspapers on yesterday. Throughout the summer, police have arrested dozens more involved in similar water fights in parks in major cities around the country. Hard-liners see the water fights as unseemly and immoral, breaking taboos against men and women simply mixing, much less dousing each other with water and playing in the streets. But authorities see a darker hand as well, worrying that the gatherings could weaken adherence among young people to Iran’s cleric-led Islamic rule or even build into outright protests against Iran’s regime.
They lived in cells barely big enough to turn around in and usually fought until they died. This was the lot of those at a sensational scientific discovery unveiled yesterday: The well-preserved ruins of a gladiator school in Austria. The Carnuntum ruins are part of a city of 50,000 people 45 kilometres east of Vienna that flourished about 1,700 years ago, a major military and trade outpost linking the farflung Roman empire’s Asian boundaries to its central and northern European lands. Mapped out by radar, the ruins of the gladiator school remain underground. Yet officials say the find rivals the famous Ludus Magnus – the largest of the gladiatorial training schools in Rome – in its structure. And they say the Austrian site is even more detailed than the well-known Roman ruin, down to the remains of a thick wooden post in the middle of the training area, a mock enemy that young, desperate gladiators hacked away at centuries ago. “(This is) a world sensation, in the true meaning of the word,” said Lower Austrian provincial
Governor Erwin Proell. The archaeological park Carnuntum said the ruins were “unique in the world ... in their completeness and dimension.” It was definitely a school of hard knocks: “A gladiator school was a mixture of a barracks and a prison, kind of a high-security facility,” said the RoemischGermanisches Zentralmuseum, one of the institutes involved in finding and evaluating

the discovery. “The fighters were often convicted criminals, prisoners-of-war, and usually slaves.” Still, there were some perks for the men who sweated and bled for what they hoped would at least be a few brief moments of glory before their demise. The institute said the training area was where the men’s “market value and in end effect their fate” was decided. At the same time, it gave them a small chance for survival, fame, and possibly liberty. “If they were successful, they had a chance to advance to ‘superstar’ status – and maybe even achieve freedom,” said Carnuntum park head Franz Humer.
A model of an Austrian Roman gladiator school found with underground radar is presented at a press conference by the Ludwig Bolzmann institute for archaeology yesterday in Carnuntum, Austria.
