KHL TEAM KILLED IN PLANE CRASH The Lokomotiv KHL team poses for a photo in the Lokomotiv Arena in the Russian city of Yaroslavl last month.
A private Russian jet carrying a top hockey team slammed into a riverbank moments after takeoff yesterday, killing at least 43 people, including the team’s Canadian coach and a former Vancouver Canuck, in one of the worst plane crashes ever involving a sports team. Both Russia and the world of hockey were left stunned by the deaths of so many international stars in one catastrophic event. Two other people on board were critically injured. The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said the Yak-42 crashed into the shores of the Volga River immediately after leaving the airport near the western city of Yaroslavl, 240 km northeast of Moscow.

The weather was sunny and clear at the time. Russian media said the plane struggled to gain altitude and then crashed into a signal tower, shattering into pieces. The plane was carrying the Lokomotiv team from Yaroslavl to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, where the team was to play against Dynamo Minsk today in the opening game of the season for the Kontinental Hockey League. The ministry said the plane had 45 people on board, including 37 passengers and eight crew. KHL confirmed that Canadian Brad McCrimmon was among the dead. McCrimmon took over as head coach in May. A native of Saskatchewan, the 52-year-old was most recently an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings, and played for years in the NHL for Boston,
Philadelphia, Detroit, Hartford and Phoenix. Czech players Josef Vasicek, Karel Rachunek and Jan Marek, Swedish goalie Stefan Liv, Latvian defenceman Karlis Skrastins and defenceman Ruslan Salehi of Belarus were among those killed. Slovakian national team captain Pavol Demitra, who played in the NHL for the St. Louis Blues and the Vancouver Canucks, was also among the dead, officials said. Officials said Russian player Alexander Galimov survived the crash along with a crew member. “Their state of health is very grave. But there is still some hope,” said Alexander Degyatryov, chief doctor at Yaroslavl’s Solovyov Hospital. Yaroslavl governor Sergei Vakhrukov promised that the Lokomotiv team would be rebuilt from scratch.

FISH FARM FOE CHALLENGED AT SALMON PROBE JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)
Biologist and anti-aquaculture activist Alexandra Morton was mocked yesterday and accused of ethical breaches in her crusade to tie ocean salmon farms to the collapse of the Fraser River’s wild sockeye runs. Morton, executive director of the Raincoast Research Society, defiantly stood her ground in the first of two days of grilling before the Cohen Inquiry. She was pressed on how she can categorically say salmon farms cannot safely co-exist with wild runs when most other scientists testifying before the commission have said – with varying degrees of certainty – that it should be possible. “I am completely independent,” Morton replied, adding she doesn’t work for a university, government or other vested interests. “You’re pure? You are the only one who isn’t corrupted?” asked a lawyer representing the aquaculture industry in cross-examination. “Perhaps,” she said. The exchange came after lawyers for the provincial and federal governments and B.C.’s

Morton told the inquiry salmon farms act as a reservoir that amplifies pre-existing parasites and diseases along the wild salmon migration route, which runs through narrow channels off northeastern Vancouver Island. Natural runs of salmon die when they spawn, Morton said, breaking the chain of disease, but salmon farms act as a place where pathogens can breed and spread back and forth, both as juvenile salmon head out to the ocean and mature adults return.

AMBER ALERT ISSUED FOR 3-YEAR-OLD BOY SPARWOOD (Canadian Press)
Police have issued an Amber Alert for a three-yearold boy missing in Sparwood after searching for him for most of the day. Kienan Hebert was last seen when his family put him to bed Tuesday evening at his home in the southeastern B.C. community located about 600 kilometres east of Vancouver. Hebert is described as a red-haired Caucasian boy and was last seen wearing a blue pair of Scooby Doo boxer shorts. Police say they’re looking for Randall Hopley, 46, who is of no relation to Hebert. They are also looking for a brown 1987 Toyota Camry with the license plate 098RAL. “Nothing has been ruled out but certainly we are
considering foul play of course in this matter, but again we remain hopeful and optimistic in thoughts with the family that we’re going to have a positive outcome to this effort so far in locating the child unharmed and well,” said RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk. Moskaluk said the boy was reported missing at about 9 a.m Wednesday morning. Moskaluk said he couldn’t answer why investigators identified Hopley as a person of interest. Court records show multiple convictions for crimes in Sparwood for a man named Randall Peter Hopley, born in 1965. This past June, he was sentenced to two months in jail and two months of probation after he was convicted of assault. The assault occurred in April of this year in Sparwood, court records indicate.

Chief Justice Lance Finch, B.C.’s top judge, has weighed into the debate on former premier Gordon Campbell’s selection for the Order of B.C. last week. Finch, chairman of the Order of B.C. Finch’s statement says Campbell’s nomination was received on March 10, 2011 and his appointment was made on Sept. 2. He says Campbell did not hold elected office on Sept. 2.

John Horace Oughton may not be treatable, but the man known as the paper bag rapist is still entitled to a parole review. Oughton was declared a dangerous offender in 1986 after he admitted to sexually assaulting more than 140 women and children during a 10-year rampage that included Burnaby, Langley and other Metro Vancouver communities. Prison spokesperson Kelsey Hymander confirmed Oughton will get a review sometime in mid-September.
SMOKING BAN LOOMS FOR METRO REGIONAL PARKS JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)
A ban on smoking in regional parks except in designated areas will go to the Metro Vancouver board for a final vote later this month. The region’s parks committee voted 5-4 yesterday to proceed with the tougher restrictions on smokers who use Metro-run parks, trails and beaches. Committee chair Gayle Martin, a Langley City councillor, said the plan would leave it to Metro staff to define permitted smoking zones near where people spend long periods of time – beaches, shelters, reservable buildings and campsites.

The federal government is launching a new program to bombard consumers with advice on how to cut their energy use. Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver is putting $78 million over two years into spreading the word – online, at cash registers and anywhere else consumers may be making key decisions. He says the program will assess existing technology and encourage higher energy standards, especially in buildings and new homes, leading to an anticipated reduction in emissions of four megatonnes by 2016.

A new government-commissioned poll suggests half of Canadians are ready to cheat the taxman. The survey conducted for the Canada Revenue Agency found only 49 per cent of people aren’t likely to cheat. The others said they were open to cutting corners, usually by paying cash for goods and services. The poll says about 13 per cent of those surveyed were essentially tax outlaws, who were willing to cheat, don’t think it’s a big deal and tended to believe that most people feel the same way.

British police have interviewed a Guardian journalist over an alleged leak of information from the investigation into phone hacking at the News of the World tabloid, the newspaper said yesterday. The Guardian identified the reporter as Amelia Hill. Although neither London police nor the paper made the reason for Hill’s interrogation clear, one of the detectives investigating the phone hacking case has recently been arrested on suspicion of “unauthorized disclosure of information.” The officer has not been identified.
Two flights operated by Pakistan’s stateowned airline received bombs threats yesterday, and both landed safely, one in Turkey, the other in Malaysia. The first flight was headed for Manchester, England, when it was notified of the threat near the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, and contacted the control tower in Istanbul to seek permission for the landing, state-run Anatolia news agency reported. Later, a second PIA flight from Islamabad to Kuala Lumpur also received a bomb threat. It landed in Kuala Lumpur and all 176 passengers disembarked safely.
Firefighting crews started yesterday to gain control of a wind-stoked blaze that has raged unchecked across parched Central Texas for days, leaving hundreds of charred properties in its wake and causing thousands of people to flee. At least two people have died in the wildfire, which destroyed nearly 800 homes and blackened about 45 square miles in and around the city of Bastrop, outside Austin, the state capital. The Texas Forest Service said the blaze had consumed 785 homes, making it the most catastrophic of the fires that have erupted in the past week across Texas.

Tripoli’s military commander said yesterday that Moammar Gadhafi is cornered and the days before he is captured or killed are numbered, but another senior defence official contended that Libya’s new rulers have no idea where the fugitive former leader is. Hunting down Gadhafi would help seal the new rulers’ hold on the country, and likely trigger the collapse of the remaining regime loyalists still fighting the former rebels. Anis Sharif, a spokesman for Tripoli’s military council, said that Gadhafi was still in Libya and had been tracked using advanced technology and human intelligence. Rebel forces have taken up positions on all sides of the fugitive leader’s presumed location, with none more than 60 kilometres away, he said, without elaborating. “He can’t get out,” said Sharif, who added the for-

EGYPT’S MILITARY RULER TO TESTIFY AT MUBARAK TRIAL CAIRO, Egypt (Associated Press)
The judge in the trial of Hosni Mubarak yesterday summoned the top brass in Egypt’s new ruling military council and his former vice-president to testify in closed sessions on the ousted leader’s role in putting down protests against his rule. Both the defence and prosecution in the case against Mubarak and six of his top security chiefs sought the testimony of Field Marshal Mohammed Tantawi, who was Mubarak’s defence minister and is now the military ruler. Also summoned were the military chief of staff Sami Hosni Mubarak Anan and Omar Suleiman, who Mubarak appointed as his vice-president during the uprising and was his powerful intelligence chief for nearly two decades. Many Egyptians believe that their testimony is key in determining whether Mubarak ordered the use of lethal force against the uprising. Mubarak himself has said in his statements that his top military and security chiefs attended meetings with him during the 18-day uprising. Nearly 850 protesters were killed in the early days of the protests that forced Mubarak to step down in February.

Perry absorbed the body blows from his fellow candidates without losing his cool, something he hasn’t always managed in 11 years at the helm of the Lone Star state.
Fellow Texan Ron Paul, the 76-year-old libertarian who’s become a crowd favourite in previous Republican debates this year, came out swinging against Perry, accusing him of hypocrisy for criticizing Romney for the public health care he instituted as Massachussetts governor. “(Perry) wrote a really fancy letter supporting Hillarycare, so we really ought to ask him about that,” Paul said in reference to the proposed health-care reform Hillary Clinton unsuccessfully attempted to get through Congress as first lady in the 1990s. LAST OF 4 SUSPECTS IN NY FBI MOSQUE STING GETS 25 YEARS
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
The last of four men convicted in an FBI sting operation aimed at New York City synagogues was sentenced yesterday to 25 years in prison. The sentence handed down to Laguerre Payen in Manhattan matched the terms given in June to his three co-defendants, James Cromitie, David Williams and Onta Williams for the plot to blow up synagogues and shoot down military planes. The men were convicted of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction and other charges. The sting began after the FBI in 2008 assigned an informant to infiltrate a mosque in Newburgh, about 112 kilometres north of New York. The men’s trial featured two weeks of testimony by the informant, Shahed Hussain, a Pakistani immigrant. After meeting Cromitie at the mosque, Hussain told him he was a representative of a Pakistani terrorist organization that was eager to finance a holy war on U.S. soil. Prosecutors alleged that Cromitie hatched the scheme to blow up the synagogues in the Bronx with remote-controlled bombs and to shoot down cargo planes at the Air National Guard base in Newburgh with heat-seeking missiles.

President Barack Obama will salute the artists and others will perform in their honour at a ceremony at the Kennedy Center. “I’ve watched, and I’ve seen, and I’ve even dreamed that someday that would happen to me,” he said. “But I never really believed that it would.” Diamond said he used to get distracted when people sang along with him to hits like Sweet Caroline, which was written for Caroline Kennedy. “But I realized pretty quickly that it was a compliment and I had no choice in the matter anyway, so I got with the program and just learned to love it,” said Diamond. LIZ TAYLOR’S PRIZED JEWELRY COMING TO AUCTION IN NEW YORK
LADY GAGA: A LEADER IN POP MUSIC WITH WEIRD TACTICS
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Elizabeth Taylor dazzled the world with her luminous beauty, lavish lifestyle – and an unquenchable passion for diamonds and jewels that was fuelled by the great loves of her life. The late Hollywood star amassed one of the foremost jewelry collections in the world, including a 33.19-carat diamond ring and a 16th century pear-shaped pearl from one of her seven husbands, Richard Burton. The Associated Press recently viewed about two dozen of her most iconic pieces at Christie’s auction house, which is selling her complete jewelry collection, valued at $30 million (all ďŹ gures US), in New York on Dec. 13-14. “These are the top jewels that Elizabeth Taylor received from the great loves of her life, Mike Todd and Richard Burton,â€? said Christie’s jewelry expert Rahul Kadakia. “They’re from moments in life that were very dear to her.â€? The stories behind them are as priceless as the gems themselves. In a 2002 memoir, My Love Affair
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Whether it’s being encased in an egg or wearing slabs of meat, there’s never a question of whether Lady Gaga will make a spectacle of herself at an awards show. So when the MTV Video Music Awards came around this year, Gaga didn’t disappoint. Though she dressed conservatively, it was whom she embodied that made headlines – a man. The temporary gender switch marked yet another act in Gaga’s strange pop odyssey. But what made the VMAs so noteworthy was that Gaga wasn’t the only oddity. There was Katy Perry, sporting pink hair and a yellow cube on top of her head. And then there was Nicki Minaj, who wore a surgical mask, a rainbow-colored wig and a mini-tutu made out of cubic designs, with an attached string of stuffed toys. Gaga, Minaj and Perry are part of a group of contemporary pop stars who are ďŹ nding success by defying the conventional deďŹ nition of sexiness with oddball tactics and wacky outďŹ ts. “All three are emblematic of the millennial generation, who are constantly remixing and reshaping their identities,â€? said MTV president Stephen Friedman.

with Jewelry, Taylor took readers on a personal journey, describing in her own words how she came to own each piece. “I never, never thought of my jewelry as trophies, she wrote.
CROWN JEWELS

Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic jewelry is expected to fetch $30 million at auction in December.
“I’m here to take care of them and to love them. When I die and they go off to auction I hope whoever buys them gives them a really good home. It’s an extraordinary collection of rubies, diamonds, emeralds and sapphires in intricate and bold designs. Among the standouts is the 16thcentury La Peregrina, one of the largest and most symmetrically perfect pear-shaped pearls in the world, which Burton purchased for Taylor in 1969. Once part of the Crown Jewels of Spain, the pearl later passed into the hands of Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon III and the Duke of Abercorn. When it came up at auction in New York, Burton snapped it up for $37,000. Cartier later created a ruby and diamond necklace from which the pearl was suspended, a design that was inspired by the famous Velazquez portraits of Spain’s Queen Margarita and Queen Isabel wearing the pearl as a necklace. Its value is estimated at between $2 million and $3 million.

CANADA OUT OF TOP 10 IN COMPETITIVENESS OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Canada slipped out of the Top 10 in global competitiveness, dropping two spots to 12th place overall behind the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, says an annual report released by the World Economic Forum. The report, which ranked Switzerland first, said yesterday that Canada needs to be more innovative and develop other lucrative value-added products, services and markets. The Conference Board of Canada did a survey for the World Economic Forum to get corporate leaders’ perceptions of the business climate. The overall rankings were calculated from both publicly available data and the survey, which included more than 14,000 business leaders including 82 in Canada, in a record 142 economies.
MCDONALD’S CANADA UNVEILS $1B RENO PLAN TORONTO (Canadian Press)
McDonald’s is spending $1 billion to renovate all its Canadian locations in an effort to look cozier as the fast food giant raises the stakes to grab more customers. The fast food giant is spending the massive amount of money to spruce up 1,400 stores by next year – tearing out the old plastic interiors, and replacing them with leather furniture, plasma televisions and fireplaces. The chain says it’s a response to changing customer habits in Canada’s $19-billion per year fast food industry. “People tend to linger a little bit more in restaurants today. They want to enjoy their meals take a break from the busy lifestyle that they lead and we think our restaurants today are certainly doing that a lot better than in the past,” McDonald’s Canada CEO John Betts said.

Sidney Crosby speaks to reporters about his recovery from a concussion he suffered in January during a news conference yesterday in Pittsburgh.
NO TIMETABLE FOR CROSBY’S RETURN PITTSBURGH (Associated Press)
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is making progress in his recovery from a concussion but doctors said there is no timeline for his return to action. The NHL superstar was flanked by Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero and two concussion experts at a news conference yesterday to update Crosby’s health status. Dr. Michael Collins said Crosby’s recovery is coming along but is not there yet. “I don’t look at concussion as the bogeyman here,” Collins said. “I see this as a manageable injury and we’re making progress in Sid’s case and I anticipate Sid returning to hockey and playing well in the future. “But I can guarantee you that we are not going to make any mistakes in this case. And before Sid goes back to playing, we’re going to make sure he’s 100 per cent recovered, no ifs, ands or buts about it.” Training camp opens Sept. 16 and Pittsburgh plays its first regular-season game Oct. 6. Doctors said they don’t know whether Crosby will be ready for the
opener. Crosby said it’s been a “tough road” but he feels good mentally and never considered retirement. He took part in his normal off-season workout program but his headaches returned when he got to 90 per cent exertion in his workouts. “Maybe I could get by with 90 per cent, maybe I couldn’t, but I’m not going to roll the dice on that,” Crosby said. Crosby, 24, hasn’t played in a game since Jan. 5, missing the rest of the regular season and Pittsburgh’s first-round playoff loss to Tampa Bay. He sustained hits in consecutive games in early January before being diagnosed with the concussion. He flirted with returning during the playoffs before a series of setbacks kept him off the ice. He said that after he suffered the concussion, driving and watching TV was a problem. Watching a video with the team was also bad. “These are things we do every day,” he said. “It’s a difficult thing to go though and trust me I’d love to have answers myself sometimes when I was going through that but it’s not as easy as that ... It’s a roller-coaster.” Crosby was in the midst of an MVP-type season before the injury, amassing 66 points (32 goals, 34 assists) in 41 games.

PEYTON MANNING’S STREAK ENDS AT 227 STRAIGHT STARTS INDIANAPOLIS (Associated Press)
Peyton Manning’s streak is over. Manning will not play Sunday in the season opener at Houston, bringing an end to his streak of 227 consecutive starts, including the playoffs. The Colts said 38-year-old Kerry Collins will get the start against the Texans. Manning has not been able to fully recover from neck surgery in May. During his streak, he has led the Colts to 11 playoff appearances, 11 double-digit win seasons, eight division crowns, two AFC titles and the first Super Bowl championship in the franchise’s Indianapolis era. The streak is the second longest among NFL quarterbacks behind only Brett Favre. “It’s going to be a little different without Peyton. He’s one of a kind,” coach Jim Caldwell said. “When you look across our league, most teams have had quarterbacks that have missed time. Ours has just been highly unusual.” Manning had been listed as doubtful for the game, but losing him for any time is a shock to Indy fans, not to mention his teammates. Not only has the four-time NFL MVP never missed a start, he’s rarely missed practice. Manning sat out one week of training camp in 1998 before signing his rookie contract. A decade later, he missed all of training camp in 2008 because he underwent surgery twice to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee. The only other time his playing status was in doubt was 2001 after he was injured at Minnesota in a pre-season game.

PLAYERS UNHAPPY AT U.S. OPEN RAIN DELAY NEW YORK (Associated Press)
With a mist hanging in the sky and the back of the court still wet, Rafael Nadal thought it was dangerous to head into Arthur Ashe Stadium to start his U.S. Open match Wednesday. Andy Roddick and Andy Murray weren’t thrilled about starting their matches, either. Too bad, tournament officials said. The show must go on. It did. For about 15 minutes. Then, the rain picked up, and as soon as Nadal, Murray and Roddick came off the court, they were in the tournament director’s office to discuss the decision to start the matches in the first place. Nadal’s take: It’s all about the money. “We’re part of the show,” the defending champion said in an interview on ESPN after falling behind 3-0 to unseeded Gilles Muller. “I understand the fans are there. But the players are important in this part of the show, too, and we didn’t feel protected.” Aware of the criticism, the U.S. Tennis Association released a statement, saying there appeared to be a two-hour window without rain and because of that, officials decided to start play. Shortly after that, the USTA sent Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic home, postponing their matches from last night to today.

EX-OLYMPIAN ALEX BAUMANN STEPS DOWN FROM OWN THE PODIUM OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Concern for his family, a recent bout with cancer and a surprise job offer convinced Alex Baumann to step down as chief executive officer of Own The Podium. Canada’s double Olympic gold medallist in swimming in 1984 announced yesterday he is taking a similar position with High Performance Sport New Zealand.
CFL | All-star slotback Andy Fantuz says he is returning to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, putting his NFL aspirations on hold.

BOMB BLAST OUTSIDE NEW DELHI COURT KILLS 11
SAN DIEGO (Associated Press)
A person dressed as Gumby walked into a Southern California convenience store, claiming to have a gun and demanding money, but costume trouble and a skeptical clerk thwarted the would-be robber. Surveillance video shows someone – police think it was a man – in a bulky, green costume and another man entering a 7-Eleven store in Rancho Penasquitos early Monday. Gumby demanded money, but the store clerk thought it was a joke and ignored the life-size Claymation character, telling him he was cleaning up and didn’t have time to waste, said San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen. “You don’t think this is a robbery? I have a gun,” the costumed man said, fumbling inside his costume as if trying to retrieve a weapon, Hassen said. But the green-gloves seemed to get in the way, and rather than pull a gun, he dropped 26 cents on the floor. The costumed character “can’t pick up the money and he can’t get the gun,” Hassen said. So when an accomplice pulls up in front of the store and honks, the would-be robber runs to the white or silver minivan and takes off, Hassen said. No arrests have been made.

The blast killed 11 people and wounded 76 others. Their identities were not available, but no judges were among the victims. Police were scouring the city for possible suspects, searching hotels, bus stands, railway stations and the airport, said top security official U.K. Bansal. All roads out of the city were under surveillance as well, he said.

SCHROEDER Jacob Jacob was born on March 17, 1917 in Sommerfeld, Manitoba (fourth son in a family of 11 children) and passed away peacefully at The Hamlets in Kamloops, BC on September 3, 2011. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years Sally and survived by his children Ken (Mary-Ann), Al (Sophie), Valery (Bill Braden), Barry (Karen), 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Jac was a life-long communicator as educator, writer and workshop presenter with Co-operatives in Manitoba, and with B.C. Central Credit Union in British Columbia and around the world. As he said in his memoirs.... “The intensive lifestyle that my work subjected me to has not robbed me of my passion for being engaged with people, my constant sense of humour, and the joys wrought by working closely with people for the common good. It has brought me an inner peace with God and man in the here and now, and a deep faith in the love and peace in the hereafter. To God be the praise and the glory.” There were no idle times for him. He loved gardening, woodworking and had a big passion for painting. He loved studying the Bible and shared his faith in attending and leading Bible studies for many years. We will cherish his memory and dearly miss him. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Hamlets of Westyde for their kind, compassionate care. A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate his remarkable life at 2:30 on Saturday, September 10, 2011 in the Chapel of the Valley View Funeral Home, 14660 72nd Avenue, Surrey, BC.
