POLICE SEEK MEDIA RIOT FOOTAGE
VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Vancouver police began showing up at local newsrooms yesterday demanding video shot during the Stanley Cup riot, saying footage captured by journalists will be invaluable to prosecute suspects. The force also revealed how many people they expect to include in the first wave of charges late next month. Police expect to forward evidence to Crown counsel involving 40 people, although they insist hundreds will eventually be charged. Insp. Les Yeo said officers were visiting news outlets to deliver warrants, also known as production orders, requesting raw footage taken during the June 15 riot, which followed the Vancouver Canucks’ Game 7 Cup Final loss to the Boston Bruins. Yeo said it will be added to the hundreds of hours of video already in the possession of police, either shot by officers or bystanders. “Anything that can give us the best evidence against these individuals is essential to us, and some of the best video footage we have is in the possession of the media,” Yeo told reporters. “The (investigators) are asking for raw footage, which includes stuff that was not broadcast.” The force has come under criticism for the slow pace of the investigation. It’s been more than three months, and so far no rioting charges have been laid. Yeo repeated the force’s plea for patience. “As I said before, we’re looking at charging up to 500 or 700 people,” said Yeo.

Police soon after responded to several 911 calls of “multiple shots fired” in the parkade. Mounties arrived to find a young woman “suffering from what can only be described as significant and multiple gunshot wounds,” said RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Two uniformed officers did everything they could to save her. She was transferred to hospital where she died. “Clearly based on the evidence at the scene, this was an obvious homicide,” Thiessen said. Batalia had changed her relationship status to “single” on her Facebook site on Sunday. Two friends “liked” that, and she responded “LOLLLL ahahahaha ur soo funni :P LOL” Thiessen said there is no evidence to suggest the murder is linked to drugs or organized crime.

VICTORIA (Canadian Press)
The normally friendly relations between the federal Conservative government and B.C. Liberal government are being put to the test over talks to renew a 20-year contract with the RCMP in British Columbia. B.C. Solicitor General Shirley Bond said she’s received a takeit-or-leave it ultimatum from the Conservatives, including a threat to start pulling the Mounties out of the province. Meanwhile the Conservatives said yesterday that after four years of failed talks aimed at brokering a new deal, a deadline is approaching. The federal Opposition New Democrats are using the RCMP contract dispute to take shots at the Conservatives’ crime-fighting agenda, saying the federal government talks tough on crime, but is threatening to leave B.C. without police protection. Heritage Minister James Moore, B.C.’s Conservative caucus chief spokesman, told reporters in Ottawa the federal and B.C. governments have been negotiating the terms of the $800 million contract for the past four years and the deadline to conclude the agreement is approaching.
He did not directly say the federal government has threatened to start pulling the RCMP out of B.C. in 2014 if the province doesn’t renew the contract by the end of November. “Ultimatum, I think is a torqued word,” said Moore. “I mean, the truth is you have to have a deadline. There is a deadline. The province has to step up.” He said the federal government
and B.C. government agree on the cost of the contract and the funding formula over the next 20 years, but are deadlocked over governance issues, which include the coverage of unexpected costs over the 20-year deal. Bond said Tuesday the province is looking at the costs of a provincial police force in case further negotiations fail and the federal government makes good on its ultimatum.

ONLINE VOTING OPTION BACKED BY B.C. CITIES JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)
Citizens may be able to remotely vote over the Internet to elect their mayor and council as early as 2014. Union of B.C. Municipalities delegates voted by a twoto-one margin Wednesday to urge the province to lay the groundwork to allow online voting as an option three years from now. Advocates of the idea say it could reverse a trend of sagging voter turnout, while detractors worry casting a ballot may no longer be secret, opening the door to vote-tampering by interest groups out to sway the result.
MAN DIES AFTER ASSAULT, BROTHER ARRESTED CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR (Black Press)
A 33-year-old Campbell River man is dead and his 18-year-old brother is in police custody. Police responded to a report of an assault at about 2:10 a.m. yesterday. “On arrival, officers learned that a 33-year-old male resident of that location had been assaulted by his 18-yearold brother,” said RCMP Sgt. Craig Massey. The victim was transported to Campbell River hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. No names have been released.
BRIEF AMBER ALERT ENDS IN ARREST PEACE ARCH NEWS (Black Press)
A 35-year-old man is in custody following an alleged parental abduction in South Surrey Tuesday night. The suspect was arrested around 11:30 p.m., nearly two hours after an Amber Alert was issued for a four-year-old boy. Police say they were first alerted to the situation around 8 p.m., when they were called to an alleged assault of a woman and the alleged abduction of her child. Charges are pending.

BUSINESS TARGETS RISING MUNICIPAL COSTS TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)
With municipal elections approaching in November, B.C. business groups are renewing their pressure on contenders to slow the growth of local government spending. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business has asked mayors and councillors attending the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention to sign a “taxpayer pledge” that calls on them to hold operating expense growth down to the combined increase in population and inflation, and narrow the gap between property tax rates for business and residential properties. The CFIB calculates that B.C.’s municipal operating spending rose nearly 58 per cent between 2000 and 2008, twice as fast as population and inflation grew. Sechelt Mayor Darren Inkster signed the taxpayer pledge yesterday, as did Port Moody councillor Diana

Dilworth and Coquitlam councillor Linda Reimer. Coquitlam council candidates Terry O’Neill and Andy Shen also stepped up, along with Vancouver mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton and three contenders for Vancouver council seats. The UBCM executive issued its own analysis this spring, rebutting several years of CFIB claims that municipal spending is out of control. The UBCM analysis points to rising police, firefighting and recreation costs, as well as those imposed by senior governments such as paying for carbon offsets. Colwood Mayor Dave Saunders also signed the pledge, although he isn’t seeking re-election. He said the tax targets are similar to what his council has accomplished by this year, and he would have signed the pledge if he was running in November.
The lawyer defending former Langley veterinarian Mark Marohn plans to file an application to have his animal cruelty case thrown out because of excessive delays. On Sept. 2, a written request for the digital audio recording from the first day of court proceedings on Sept 28, 2010 was filed in Surrey Provincial Court. POLICE CHECK POSSIBLE GANG LINKS IN SHOOTING COQUITLAM (Canadian Press)
Police are looking for possible gang links to a shooting that left a man wounded in Coquitlam yesterday. RCMP Sgt. The shooting occurred at a Mr. Lube outlet around the noon hour while people were in their cars waiting for service. No arrests have been made.

Treasury Board President Tony Clement has agreed to appear before the Commons public accounts committee to answer questions about an alleged slush fund used to beautify towns in his riding before the G8 summit.
Tony Clement is breaking his silence over the controversial G8 legacy fund. The Treasury Board secretary said yesterday he’s arranged to appear at the Commons public accounts committee to answer MPs’ questions about how the $50-million fund was doled out in his Parry SoundMuskoka riding.
“We’ll be there to answer, I’ll be there to answer,” Clement said in a brief statement outside the Conservative party’s caucus meeting. He said his committee appearance will take place “relatively quickly.” Clement’s statement came a day after he was mocked in the House of Commons for his steadfast refusal to answer opposition questions about the fund, used primarily to beautify towns in his riding prior to hosting last year’s G8 summit. He was called a “coward” and “ridiculous” for sitting silently in his seat while Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird fielded all questions – a pattern which continued yesterday during the daily question period. Baird was the infrastructure minister at the time of the summit and signed off on funding for 32 projects.

A popular right-wing columnist has been found guilty of breaking Australian discrimination law in articles that implied that fair-skinned Aborigines chose to identify as indigenous for profit and to further their careers. Federal Court Justice Mordy Bromberg ruled yesterday that fair-skinned Aborigines were likely to have been “offended, insulted, humiliated or intimidated by the imputations” in Andrew Bolt’s two articles published by the Herald Sun newspaper in 2009. The judge ordered Bolt and his publisher to meet with the complainant to agree on appropriate court orders, including an apology.
Egypt’s powerful former information minister was convicted of corruption and sentenced to seven years in prison yesterday, in the latest conviction of a high-ranking figure of Hosni Mubarak’s toppled regime. Anas el-Fiqqi joins a growing list of former regime officials to have been convicted of crimes committed during Mubarak’s nearly 30-year rule, along with the ex-interior minister, tourism minister and a ruling party insider and steel magnate. Former state television chief Osama el-Sheikh also was sentenced yesterday to five years in prison in the same case as el-Fiqqi.
News of the World’s chief reporter is claiming unfair dismissal from his former publisher, Rupert Murdoch’s News International, a British employment tribunal filing showed. News International said yesterday it “will vigorously contest the case,” filed on Sept. 13. Neville Thurlbeck is expected to claim he was fired for whistleblowing in the phone-hacking scandal that brought down his tabloid. A preliminary hearing will take place at the East London Tribunal Service centre Friday. Thurlbeck, 50, was arrested in April on suspicion of conspiring to intercept voicemail messages and released on bail.

Lebanese Ambassador Nawaf Salam, who holds this month’s rotating council presidency, announced that he was forwarding the Palestinians’ request to the committee on new admissions, which includes all 15 member states on the council. The step is required by council rules of procedure. The committee will meet to consider the request on Friday. UN SECURITY COUNCIL STILL DIVIDED OVER SANCTIONS FOR SYRIA UNITED NATIONS (Associated Press)
The UN Security Council tried again yesterday to bridge divisions over possible sanctions against Syria and reach agreement on a resolution condemning the government’s six-month military crackdown and calling for inclusive political talks. The United Nations’ most powerful body met behind closed doors for two hours to discuss newly revised rival texts – a European draft threatening sanctions against President Bashar Assad’s regime if the violence doesn’t end immediately and a Russian “The idea, of course, text which makes no menis getting a strong tion of sanctions and rules and unified message out any outside military of the council ... that intervention. The Russians the Syrian regime has and Europeans told reportto stop violence and ers afterwards it was a good engage in dialogue.” discussion, and one council – German UN diplomat said “there was Ambassador nothing that looked insurPeter Wittig mountable.” The Europeans are expected to incorporate some Russian proposals in a new text that will be discussed when council experts meet again this afternoon, the diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. “The Europeans reached out in the spirit of compromise to other countries,” Germany’s UN Ambassador Peter Wittig said. “The idea, of course, is getting a strong and unified message of the council ... that the Syrian regime has to stop violence and engage in dialogue.” It took four months for the council to break a deadlock and finally issue a statement in August condemning the escalating violence in Syria.
The Europeans, backed by the United States, quickly tried to press for a legally binding resolution calling for an immediate arms embargo and other sanctions aimed at stopping the government’s ongoing crackdown on opposition protesters. But their initial draft resolution, circulated in late August, faced opposition from Russia, China, India, South Africa and Brazil, partly because of fear it might be used as a pretext for armed intervention against Syria.

SAUDI KING QUASHES VERDICT AGAINST WOMAN DRIVER RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (Associated Press)
Saudi King Abdullah has overturned a court ruling sentencing a Saudi woman to be lashed 10 times for defying the kingdom’s ban on female drivers, a government official said yesterday. The official declined to elaborate on the monarch’s decision, and spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media. A Saudi court on Tuesday found Shaima Jastaina guilty of violating the driving ban, and sentenced her to 10 lashes. The verdict took Saudi women by surprise, coming just a day after King Abdullah promised to King Abdullah protect women’s rights and decreed that women would be allowed to participate in municipal elections in 2015. There are no written laws that restrict women from driving. Rather, the ban is rooted in religious views that hold giving freedom of movement to women would make them vulnerable to sins. Normally, police just stop female drivers, question them and let them go after they sign a pledge not to drive again. But dozens of women have continued to take to the roads since June in a campaign to break the taboo. Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that bans women – both Saudi and foreign – from driving.

U.S. MAN ACCUSED IN PLOT TO BLOW UP PENTAGON, CAPITOL
BOSTON (Associated Press)
A man was arrested yesterday and accused of plotting to destroy the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol by attacking the buildings with large, remote-controlled aircraft armed with lethal amounts of explosives. Rezwan Ferdaus, 26, was arrested in Framingham, Massachusetts, after undercover federal agents delivered materials he’d allegedly requested for his plan, including grenades, six machine-guns and what he believed was 24 pounds of C-4 explosive. According to a federal affidavit, Ferdaus, 26, became convinced that America was evil through jihadi websites and videos, and began planning “jihad” against the U.S. in early 2010. He contacted a federal informant that December and months later, allegedly began meeting to discuss the plot with undercover federal agents he believed were members of al-Qaida. Ferdaus said he wanted to deal a psychological blow to the “enemies of Allah” by hitting the Pentagon, which he called “head and heart of the snake,” according to the affidavit. “Allah has given us the privilege,” he allegedly told the informant. “... He punishes them by our hand. We’re the ones.” Ferdaus is a U.S. citizen who graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in physics.

But the Aussie actress did not want her character, Annabel, to be defined by illness. “People were asking me: ‘How did you approach playing a kid with cancer?’ And I sort of didn’t really think about it like that, didn’t really want to think about it like that,” Wasikowska said. “It was firstly always playing Annabel, and then that was a part of who she OPENING IN was.” THEATRES Van Sant, meanwhile, has said he TOMORROW was drawn to Jason Lew’s screenplay because of the way it showed lightness in a dark situation. As the son of a pediatric oncologist, Van Sant explains, Lew became close to young people with cancer. “(They) often have to turn elsewhere to find any kind of friendship because their families are so overcome with grief that just regular friendship, just hanging around, becomes very difficult,” Van Sant said in an interview at the Toronto Film Festival. Indeed, Annabel is almost eerily matter-of-fact about her illness, focused instead on her budding romance with Enoch (played by Henry Hopper.) STEPHEN KING WRITING A SEQUEL TO THE SHINING
TORONTO (Torstar)
America’s greatest horror writer is working on a sequel to one of his first bestsellers. Stephen King is working on a book called Dr. Sleep, a sequel to The Shining. The author read an excerpt of the work in progress on the weekend during a visit to George Mason University. The sequel will continue the story of Danny Torrance, who was the clairvoyant child in the first novel. “I can tell you that this is an idea that I’ve had for some time. I wrote a novel in the ’70s called The Shining … I always wondered what happened to that kid, Danny Torrance, when he grew up,” he said. “I kept wondering what’s Danny Torrance up to? What’s going on with him? Where did he go after this terrible experience? And little by little, this story started to form.” The excerpt he read was about a group of vampires called the Tribe who can suck energy from people. He said the book is not quite done, but is close to completion. According to a description he gave in 2009, the book takes place 40 years after the events of The Shining, with Torrance working in a medical facility with terminally ill patients.

MICK FLEETWOOD CHANNELS MUSICAL LEGACY INTO NEW RESTAURANT
NEW STUDY FINDS FEWER GAY CHARACTERS ON TV
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Associated Press)
Long before the success of Fleetwood Mac, when band founder Mick Fleetwood was a kid in the U.K. learning how to play the drums, he dreamed of having his own restaurant. His parents entrusted him with the stable of the old farmhouse they lived in, and Fleetwood turned it into something of a children’s speakeasy that he called Club Keller. Instead of booze, he poured Coca-Cola. “I used to serve up Smith’s crisps and ďŹ sh and chips and stuff for other children to come round,â€? Fleetwood recalled. “I had my radiogram and my drums in there and it was my world.â€? Now, ďŹ ve and a half decades later, Fleetwood is creating a new world for himself and his music: He’s opening a restaurant in his adopted hometown of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Fleetwood’s on Front St. is set to open early next year, and its namesake sees it as the next professional chapter in his life: A place where he can indulge his taste for ďŹ ne food and drink (including his own Mick Fleetwood Private

The number of gay and bisexual characters on scripted broadcast network TV has dipped slightly this season to 19 out of nearly 650 roles, according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The 16th annual “Where We Are on TVâ€? report released yesterday by GLAAD found that 2.9 per cent of actors appearing regularly on prime-time network drama and comedy series in the 2011-12 season will portray gay, lesbian or bisexual characters. That’s down from three per cent in the 2009-10 season and 3.9 per cent last season, when there were 23 out of a total of nearly 600 roles. The 2008-09 season saw an increased representation of 2.6 per cent. Only ďŹ ve of the 19 gay and lesbian characters are non-white, GLAAD found. Using information provided by the networks, the group reviewed 91 scripted series announced to air this season. Among broadcast series with gay and bisexual characters, GLAAD cited CBS’ The Good Wife, the CW’s Ringer and NBC’s The Playboy Club. Comedies include ABC’s Modern Family and Fox’s Glee.

Mick Fleetwood will open a restaurant in Maui early next year.
“I’ve always wanted to do this,â€? Fleetwood said. “It’s petrifying and exciting and fulďŹ lling, because ... if you keep focused, and it’s a corny thing, but if you visualize and visualize and visualize, a lot of stuff really does come to you.â€? Club Keller itself may actually be resurrected, said Fleetwood’s business partner, Jonathan Todd. “We have an option on a smaller place downstairs and, if we get it, I swear we’re going to call it Club Keller,â€? Todd said. Developing the restaurant is dominating Fleetwood’s time. He helped choose the site, select the decor and create the menu, but he insists “it’s not a shrine to Mick Fleetwood.â€? “You’ll know that it’s my place but it will be very tastefully done,â€? the 64-year-old said. “It’s not a museum for Mick Fleetwood. This is a real working restaurant.â€? He says he’ll draw on the “heritage of Fleetwood Macâ€? to inform its atmosphere. “All of this is a responsibility to do it properly, and selďŹ shly a responsibility to something that’s very precious to me, which is everything I’ve done with Fleetwood Mac and my partners and the music,â€? he said.

WALMART CANADA APPOINTS NEW CEO TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Walmart Canada is changing its management team as the big retailer moves its Canadian chief executive to a new international role. The world’s largest company said yesterday that CEO David Cheesewright would become head of Walmart’s retail operations across Canada, the United Kingdom and Sub-Saharan Africa. In his place, Shelley Broader will assume the role of CEO of the Canadian division immediately, the company said. Broader has been with Walmart since last December as chief merchandising officer, and before that was president and chief operating officer of arts and crafts supplier Michael’s in North America. Meanwhile, Cheesewright’s new position will also have him navigating Walmart International’s business developments in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Canada.
BMO: LOONIE TO SLIP TO 93 CENTS US BY JANUARY TORONTO (Canadian Press)
The Bank of Montreal is predicting that the loonie will slip to as low as 93 cents US by the end of the year as the global economic slowdown weighs on commodity prices that support the Canadian dollar. BMO said in a report yesterday that it expects the loonie to remain around that level until the second half of next year, before global growth helps to push it back to parity with the U.S. dollar. “While market action over the past few days has been positive in the hope of a broad European solution, we expect the crisis to linger well into 2012, if not longer,” the report said. The Canadian dollar was down 0.42 of a cent to 97.66 cents U.S. in trading yesterday. ADD YOUR

RAYS CLINCH AL WILD CARD
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Associated Press)
The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the AL wild card with a stunning rally last night, overcoming a late sevenrun deficit and then beating the New York Yankees 8-7 on Evan Longoria’s home run in the 12th inning. The Rays’ win came four minutes after Boston blew a one-run lead in the ninth at Baltimore and lost 4-3, causing a roar at Tropicana Field. The Red Sox, who held a nine-game lead over the Rays in early September, and Tampa Bay began the final day of the regular season tied for the wild card. Longoria hit a three-run homer in the eighth that capped a six-run burst. Pinchhitter Dan Johnson’s two-out, two-strike solo homer in the ninth tied it for Tampa Bay. Longoria won it with a one-out shot barely inside the left-field foul pole, finishing the comeback from a 7-0 margin. Tampa Bay will open its best-of-five playoff matchup at Texas on Friday. The Yankees will host Detroit in Game 1 Friday night. Longoria connected off Scott Proctor (0-3) to end it. Proctor was the Yankees’ 11th pitcher of the game – they did not use all-time career saves leader Mariano Rivera, and Johnson hit his tying shot off Cory Wade.
The Yankees pulled their regulars throughout the game and finished with a lineup that looked more like a triple-A team. Moments before Tampa Bay won, it looked as if Boston would instead be going to the playoffs. The Orioles were down to their last strike in the ninth before scoring twice off Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon. The Rays, meanwhile, escaped a first-and-third, no-out jam in the 12th. Longoria made the key play, fielding a grounder at third and making a snap tag to catch the runner diving back to the back. Mark Teixeira hit a grand slam off all-star David Price and a solo homer as the Yankees built their big lead. The Rays sputtered against a parade of New York pitchers, until the eighth. Longoria homered off Luis Ayala to pull Tampa Bay within a run. Teixeira’s second-inning slam put the Yankees ahead 5-0. His solo shot made it 6-0 and came simultaneously as Dustin Pedroia went deep for Boston to give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead in their game. The Rays began cutting into their deficit during a rain delay in Baltimore. A night after Matt Joyce’s three-run homer gave Tampa Bay a 5-3 victory that kept the wild-card race tied, a crowd of 29,518 didn’t have much to cheer until the eighth when the Rays loaded the bases with no outs against Boone Logan. Ayala replaced Logan and walked pinch hitter Sam Fuld to force in one run, then hit Sean Rodriguez with a pitch to force in another. B.J. Upton’s sacrifice fly trimmed Tampa Bay’s deficit to 7-3 before Longoria connected.

MAN CHARGED AFTER BANANA TOSS LONDON, Ont. (Canadian Press)
Police have charged a 26-year-old man over an apparent racial incident in which a banana was thrown on the ice while a black player was taking part in a shootout during an NHL pre-season game. Police say Chris Moorhouse of London, Ont., has been served a summons for engaging in a prohibited activity under the provincial Trespass to Property Act. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $2,000. London police Chief Brad Duncan said the offence did not meet the threshold of a hate crime or mischief. “You have to demonstrate and be motivated by hatred,” he told a news conference yesterday. “Although the banana did hit the ice it did not interfere with the play so it didn’t meet the mischief threshold.” Attempts to reach Moorhouse were unsuccessful. The incident occurred last Thursday during the Philadelphia Flyers’ 4-3 exhibition win over the Detroit Red Wings. The banana was thrown from the stands as Philadelphia’s Wayne Simmonds – who is black – was skating towards Detroit goalie Jordan Pearce in the shootout before 7,427 at the 9,090-seat John Labatt Centre. Simmonds, who had forced overtime with a late goal, scored on the play. Duncan said police acted on a complaint by arena management. The information received by police came “from a variety of sources,” he said, including social media.

CARDS BEAT HOUSTON, CLINCH NL WILD CARD HOUSTON (Associated Press)
Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals completed one of baseball’s greatest comebacks, clinching the NL wild card last night with an 8-0 win over Houston and a later loss by Atlanta. The Cardinals got their playoff spot when the Braves fell to Philadelphia 4-3 in 13 innings. St. Louis trailed Atlanta by 10 1/2 games on Aug. 25. The Cardinals won 23 of their last 31 games. The Cardinals will open the post-season on Saturday at NL East champion Philadelphia. In the other NL playoff matchup, Arizona visits Milwaukee. Carpenter (11-9) struck out 11 and allowed two hits in his 15th career complete-game shutout as St. Louis kept up its improbable September charge. “We had nothing to lose. We were already out of it,” Carpenter said. “People were telling us we were done. We decided to go out and play and not embarrass ourselves and do what we can. We played ourselves back into it.” The Cardinals poured onto the field after Carpenter fielded J.D. Martinez’s weak grounder for the final out. The celebration was brief and muted, as the team raced into the clubhouse to watch the end of the game in Atlanta. “It was exciting, there’s no doubt about it,” Carpenter said. “The way these guys have played the past month and a half has been amazing, every single night grinding, playing their butts off, not giving up. We continued to give ourselves an opportunity and now we are here.”

Kobe Bryant said it was “very possible” he will play in Italy during the NBA lockout, adding the country is like home because he spent part of his childhood there. Virtus Bologna has made numerous contract offers to the Los Angeles Lakers star. Bryant discussed the offer with the Gazzetta dello Sport during a sponsor’s appearance in
Milan yesterday. “It’s very possible. It would be a dream for me,” Bryant said. “There’s an opportunity that we’ve been discussing over the last few days. It’s very possible and that’s good news for me.” Virtus said that the latest talks are centred on a $2.5 million US offer for 10 games over 40 days from Oct. 9 to Kobe Bryant Nov. 16. The deal would allow Bryant to return to the Lakers immediately if the lockout ends. Bryant spent several years in Italy
11
when his father, Joe Bryant, played on five teams from 1984-91. The elder Bryant now coaches the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA. “Italy is my home. It’s where my dream of playing in the NBA started. This is where I learned the fundamentals, learned to shoot, to pass and to (move) without the ball,” Kobe Bryant said, according to the Gazzetta. “All things that when I came back to America the players my age didn’t know how to do because they were only thinking about jumping and dunking.”

She also talks to her two young sons in English. “Kathleen has been a nice teacher and a nice friend.” When Kathleen started with the Host Program, she was recruiting volunteers at Columbia Bible College. The process influenced her to put her own name forward. The application process saw Kathleen go through a criminal record check, describe her interests, and do a two-hour training session where she learned about sensitivity to culture and cultural differences. “I really enjoy the volunteer process because you make a friend and become a part of a new family,” said Kathleen. “It’s in you already to do. It doesn’t take any extra learning to become a friend with someone.”

young Guatemalan family new to Abbotsford has found confidence and a sense of community after working with a local volunteer. Marvin Interiano, 27, and his partner Estela Reyes, 28, were paired with a volunteer from the Host Program run by Abbotsford Community Services soon after their arrival a year and a half ago. The Host Program offers a one-on-one matching program for immigrant and refugee newcomers to the community. Following a screening process, which includes an interview and criminal record check, volunteers are paired with families based on similar interests and their age. They generally spend an hour or two together each week doing different activities.

GADHAFI MAY BE HIDING IN SOUTHERN DESERT: OFFICIALS TRIPOLI, Libya (Associated Press)
LAWYER FOR EX-UKRAINE PM ASKS COURT TO ACQUIT KIEV, Ukraine (Associated Press)
The abuse of office charges against former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko are unfounded and absurd, her lawyers declared yesterday, asking the court to acquit her and release her from jail. Tymoshenko, now the country’s top opposition leader, is accused of violating legal procedures in the signing of a natural gas import contract with Russia in 2009. Prosecutors have asked the court to sentence her to seven years in prison and bar her from occupying government posts for three years. Tymoshenko maintains her innocence and says the trial has been orchestrated by her arch-enemy, President Viktor Yanukovych, in order to bar her from future elections as a convicted felon. The United States and the European Union have also sharply criticized the trial as politically motivated. Tymoshenko, 50, a charismatic but divisive figure, maintains her innocence and says as prime minister, she didn’t need any special permission for the deal. She has been in custody since her arrest nearly two months ago on charges of contempt of court.
him, probably because he’s paying them,” Abdel-Rahman Busin said, although he acknowledged that the military could not confirm the information. “It’s a very large bit of land to cover. We don’t have the people to cover it all and he could move around quite freely,” Busin said. One report suggested Gadhafi was southwest of the desert town of Sabha, Busin said. He also said a recent attack on the border town of Ghadamis raised suspicion that the fugitive leader was hiding in the region, a vast area near the Algerian frontier. “Possibly they were just creating a diversion,” he said.
Libya’s new rulers believe Moammar Gadhafi may be hiding in the southern desert under the protection of ethnic Tuareg fighters, while two of his sons are holed up in cities besieged by revolutionary forces elsewhere in the North African nation, officials said yesterday. Anti-Gadhafi fighters gained control of Tripoli and much of the rest of the country late last month, but the longtime Libyan ruler and his family fled and have been trying to rally supporters from hiding as fighting continues on three fronts – Gadhafi’s hometown of Sirte, Bani Walid and the southern city of Sabha. Col. Ahmed Bani, the military spokesman for the National Transitional Council, which is now governing the country, said he couldn’t confirm any information about Gadhafi’s whereabouts but he could say that Gadhafi’s son, Seif al-Islam, is in Bani Walid and another son Muatassim is in Sirte. It was the first official confirmation that the revolutionary forces believe they know the location of the two sons since the family fled after Tripoli fell. Another military official said
earlier that the Libyans have intelligence that Gadhafi is hiding in the vast southern desert, possibly in an area near the Algerian border, with help from Tuareg fighters. Ethnic Tuaregs, whose nomadic community spans the desert border of Niger, Mali, Libya, Algeria and Chad, are among Gadhafi’s strongest remaining supporters. “We do believe that he is somewhere in that region and we do know that Tuaregs are supporting
