RITA CHRETIEN OPENS UP ABOUT NEVADA ORDEAL
PENTICTON (Canadian Press)
A Penticton woman who survived 49 days in the Nevada wilderness says her husband was frantic before leaving her in a desperate bid to get help after their van got stuck in the mud. Rita Chretien says she and her husband, Al Chretien, used a tiny snow shovel to get their van unstuck but ended up in a worse situation, then walked 7.5 kilometres before her swollen knee gave out. Chretien says in an interview airing Sunday on the Toronto-based Vision TV show Context with Lorna Dueck that her husband called 911 several times for days but kept getting cut off. The couple’s problems began with the GPS that led them off track when they decided to take the backcountry on their way to a trade show in Las Vegas last March. They soon realized they were in deep trouble. “We prayed and we cried and he went,” Chretien told Dueck. “It was very emotional. We hadn’t cried so deeply for years, and I tried to compose myself so it would be easier for him to go.” Chretien says they cried and prayed together before Al walked off on his own, never to return, before she was rescued by hunters seven weeks later when she was near death. She says her husband has likely frozen to death but until his remains are found, she sometimes thinks he could still be alive somewhere, or lost. & Best Price on New & Used Tires Wheels ies ie or ss ce Ac

Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver issued a joint statement yesterday saying they will vote for TransLink’s Moving Forward supplement on Friday. The seven mayors represent 70 per cent of Metro Vancouver’s 2.5 million residents and hold enough population-weighted votes to force the plan through even if most of the region’s 22 cities object. Burnaby, Richmond and Delta mayors said they will oppose the plan. The extra two cents a litre in gas tax would take effect in April and raise $40 million a year of the $70 million needed annually to fund the plan. Mayors and the province would have one year to negotiate another $30 million worth of new funding sources for TransLink – perhaps road pricing, a vehicle levy, a second regional carbon tax or other mechanisms.

TRACY HOLMES (Peace Arch News)
A critically injured pedestrian and three others were taken to hospital following a horrific South Surrey crash yesterday morning. “She was conscious, but unable to speak due to her injuries… pretty severe injuries,” Cpl. Darren Munroe said of a senior who was airlifted from nearby South Surrey Athletic Park. Witnesses say the woman and one other senior pedestrian were injured when they were hit by the canopy of a Ford pickup as they crossed 24 Avenue southbound at 148 Street around 9:30 a.m. The canopy flew off the northbound truck when its box was clipped by an eastbound Nissan Versa. Impact spun the truck, sending its contents, canopy and bed liner flying. The truck came to rest on its driver’s side in the northeast corner of the intersection. Peter Manchulenko, a South Surrey resident, was third in line to cross the intersection northbound when the Nissan “came flying through.” “The light was clearly red (for the Nissan),” Manchulenko said. Manchulenko said he saw the canopy hit one of the pedestrians; the truck’s bed liner knocked the
other woman down, breaking her ankle in the process, he said. He saw “broken bones and a lot of facial damage to one lady.” A third senior woman seen sitting on the truck canopy was treated for less severe injuries; nearby, a distraught young woman sat on the boulevard. Munroe said several witnesses reported that the Nissan ran a red light, however, investigation
is ongoing and collision analysts still need to reconstruct what happened. Manchulenko was frustrated at the harm done by what he believes was a driver in a rush. It’s a toocommon mindset that, in this case, ended in tragedy. “What pisses me off is everybody’s always in such a hurry,” he said. “All that, for this. Where did it get them?”

GUN OWNER CHARGED AFTER BOY, 10, KILLS TEEN CRANBROOK (Canadian Press)
Charges have been laid against a man whose gun was used by a young boy in a fatal shooting in southeast B.C. four months ago. Fifty-one-year-old George Phillips of Jaffray is accused of criminal negligence causing death and the careless storage of a firearm. His 10-year-old stepson found a loaded weapon in Phillips’s home on June 16 and pulled the trigger, killing 17-year-old Fernie resident Michael Voth. RCMP ruled the shooting accidental. Phillips is expected in provincial court in Cranbrook on Nov. 9.

According to BCCT, Hoyme sexually assaulted a woman in the hotel where he was staying after climbing through her window with a plastic bag over his head.

PREMIER WANTS RIOT TRIALS BROADCAST TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)
Attorney General Shirley Bond has ordered Crown prosecutors to ask judges to allow TV and radio coverage of court proceedings for those accused of participating in the Stanley Cup riot in June. The vow was made in the throne speech Monday, and Premier Christy Clark elaborated on it in a news conference after the speech. “When it comes to the Stanley Cup riots, those guys had no problem doing their crimes quite in public, with all kinds of people taking pictures and doing videos all around them, so I think they should have no problem being tried in public either,” Clark said. A spokesman for the Criminal Justice Branch initially said Crown prosecutors are opposed to broadcasting criminal proceedings. Bond said yesterday she
has signed an order directing them to seek permission to broadcast, with charges expected to be laid this month against dozens of suspects. Bond rejected the suggestion that broadcasting riot cases is designed to shame the participants. “I don’t think it’s about public shaming at all,” Bond said. “I think it’s about an event that impacted all of British Columbia and beyond. And I think there is a public interest in ensuring that this is a transparent, open process.” NDP justice critic Leonard Krog said the government’s call for televised prosecution is a gimmick to divert public attention from the overburdened court system, which has seen more serious cases than drunken vandalism dismissed due to delays.
SHOOTING AT MR. LUBE NOT GANG-RELATED, POLICE SAY TRI CITY NEWS (Black Press)
Coquitlam RCMP have identified a potential suspect in the shooting last Wednesday at the Barnet Highway Mr. Lube that sent one man to hospital. The victim is well-known to police and the incident appeared to be targeted but police stopped short of saying the shooting was gang-related. “Just because somebody is known to police does not mean he is officially in a gang,” Cpl. Jamie Chung said. Neither the suspect nor the victim, who is expected to recover, have been officially identified.

The “scared and emotional” boy told police that they were at Adams Lake near Kamloops for the weekend, and were on their way home.

NDP leader Greg Selinger enters party headquarters in Winnipeg with his wife Claudette (left) by his side after winning the Manitoba election last night.
MANITOBA NDP WINS FOURTH MAJORITY WINNIPEG (Canadian Press)
Manitoba’s New Democrats won a fourth-straight majority government last night, despite the Progressive Conservatives taking a big bite out of their popular vote. The NDP will be facing a new opponent. Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen told supporters he takes personal responsibility for the failure and will step down once a replacement is chosen. Premier Greg Selinger’s party was on track to take
at least 35 of the 57 legislature seats, even though the Tories were almost matching the NDP in percentage of the vote. The NDP won 36 seats in the 2007 election. “Today Manitobans went to the ballot box and they voted for optimism!” Selinger told a crowd of cheering supporters after the results came in. “Tonight we have made history in Manitoba. Life is never better than when we work together for a purpose greater than ourselves, and that’s what we’ve done tonight.” The difference was Winnipeg, which has 31 seats and holds the balance of power. The NDP was elected in all but a handful of seats in the city, which allowed the party to hold off a strong rural showing by the Tories. McFadyen said his party was the victim of a cruel numbers game under the first-past-the post election system. “Under any other circumstance we would be happy with 45 per cent of the popular vote,” McFadyensaid. “Obviously we didn’t get those votes in the right places.”

The head of Elections Canada says he’s received no evidence to back claims of illegal advertising at the NDP’s national convention last June. Chief electoral officer Marc Mayrand said the only thing he’s received is a letter alleging possible illegal contributions to the NDP. Mayrand says the matter has been referred to the commissioner of elections. Last week, the ethics commissioner told MPs there are no reasonable grounds for her to investigate a Tory ethics complaint over union sponsorships at the NDP convention.

British judges insist they didn’t block a criminal’s deportation because of worries he’d be separated from his pet cat. Home Secretary Theresa May told an annual rally of Britain’s governing Conservative Party yesterday that a court had ruled a Bolivian man should be allowed to stay in the U.K., in part because he owned a cat. The Judicial Office, which represents judges, insisted May was wrong. It said the man was allowed to stay because of a long term relationship with his girlfriend, a British resident who is a human being and not a cat.
NATO’s mission in Libya cannot end as long as fighting continues, including in Moammar Gadhafi’s hometown of Sirte, U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said yesterday. “As long as there is fighting that continues in Libya, I suspect that the NATO mission will continue,” Panetta said ahead of meetings later this week with other NATO defence chiefs. Revolutionary forces supported by NATO air strikes have seized Tripoli and much of the rest of the country, but they have been locked in a standoff over Sirte and Bani Walid for weeks.
The body of a person who was missing after a helicopter crashed into New York City’s East River has been pulled from the murky water. Police say the victim was a woman. She was among five people on the helicopter when it crashed yesterday. The pilot and three others were pulled alive from the water by rescue crews shortly after the chopper went down. The private chopper went into the river off 34th Street in midtown Manhattan. It’s unclear what happened, but witnesses said it was sputtering and appeared to be in some type of mechanical distress.
Albania’s government says the nation expects to finish destroying its massive Communist-era ammunition stockpiles by 2013. Defence Minister Arben Imami told a demilitarization conference in Tirana, Albania’s capital, yesterday that will mean disposing of the remaining 45,000 tons of ammunition and closing 22 depots located near populated areas. Albania inherited hundreds of thousands of tons of excess ammunition from its communist regime that fell in 1990. A huge blast in 2008 at a private munitions disposal factory near Tirana killed 26 people.

PUTIN PROPOSES ‘EURASIAN UNION’ OF EX-SOVIET STATES MOSCOW (Associated Press)
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has proposed forming a “Eurasian Union” of former Soviet nations, saying the bloc could become a major global player competing for influence with the United States, the European Union and Asia. Putin, who has lamented the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union as the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century,” denied that his proposal represents an attempt to rebuild the Soviet empire. But he said in an article published yesterday in the daily Izvestia that the new Vladimir Putin alliance should emerge as “one of the poles of the modern world, serving as an efficient link between Europe and the dynamic Asia-Pacific region.” “There is no talk about rebuilding the USSR in one way or another,” Putin said. “It would be naive to try to restore or copy something that belongs to the past, but a close integration based on new values and economic and political foundation is a demand of the present time.” Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan already have formed an economic alliance that has removed customs barriers in mutual trade during the past summer.

Romney, who also ran in 2008, normally would be a shoo-in as the next Republican in line for nomination to the top job. A Nigerian man accused of trying to bring down an international jetliner with a bomb in his underwear walked into the start of his federal trial yesterday and declared that a radical Islamic cleric killed by the U.S. military is alive. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s outburst came as jury selection got under way for his federal terror trial in Detroit, where he is acting as his own attorney. “Anwar is alive,” Abdulmutallab said yesterday, referring to American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed last week by a military air strike in Yemen. Abdulmutallab was directed in the attack by al-Awlaki and wanted to become a martyr when he boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in Amsterdam on Christmas in 2009, according to the U.S. government. Abdulmutallab, who complained about having to wear prison clothes, came into the courtroom wearing a prison T-shirt. U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds called a recess to allow him to change into clothes more appropriate for court, after acknowledging and denying his apparent request to wear a “Yemeni belt with a dagger.” The judge has denied several of Adulmutallab’s requests, including that the case be judged under Islamic law.

Angelina Jolie says she’s considering taking on a new and expanded role with the UN refugee agency for which she already serves as goodwill ambassador. The actress told reporters yesterday that she and the agency are still studying their options and working out the details, but haven’t settled on anything because they want to get it right. Jolie stopped by the UN’s European headquarters to highlight the plight of refugees globally in an address to the agency’s executive committee. She told diplomats and offiGOOD cials with the agency known as UNHCR WORKS AND that her work for them has been “movGOOD WILL ing, sometimes heartbreaking, but always rewarding, and unforgettable.” Her speech about refugees everywhere from Somalia to Afghanistan drew widespread applause. “They are the most vulnerable people in the world, and they are also the most resilient people in the world,” the actress told UN diplomats and officials. “Refugees are survivors, they are mothers and daughters and fathers and sons, they are all extraordinary people who have a remarkable story that tells of strength in the face of great loss,” she said. “They need our help more than ever.” Jolie also recalled the killing of UN staff in ASSOCIATED PRESS Afghanistan and Nigeria and said “we must demand Angelina Jolie says she is thinking about taking on a great respect for the concepts of independence, an expanded role with the United Nations.

impartiality and neutrality in order to ensure the safety and lives of humanitarian workers.” She said she hoped increasing budget constraints among UN donor nations would not prevent them from continuing to open their wallets to the world’s most vulnerable. On Monday, she was in Geneva to be recognized for her work and to honour a Yemeni aid group, the Society for Humanitarian Solidarity, at UNHCR’s annual awards ceremony.
FOX DEMANDS SIMPSONS ACTORS TAKE A BIG PAY CUT
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
In its 23rd year on TV, The Simpsons could be on the endangered species list. The show’s producer said yesterday the show can’t continue under its current financial model, following a report that big pay cuts are being sought for the actors who provide voices for Homer, Marge and Bart Simpson and other characters. “We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model,” said Chris Alexander, spokesman for 20th Century Fox Television. He said producers hope a deal can be reached. The Fox network reportedly loses money each year on new episodes, even as all the old episodes run in perpetuity in reruns and are a cash cow for producers and creators. The Daily Beast reported yesterday that producers are demanding a 45 per cent pay cut from the six voice actors, who reportedly make nearly $8 million each for a season. The website said the voice actors have offered to take a 30 per cent pay in return for a portion of the show’s syndication and merchandise revenue.

EDUGYAN, DEWITT, ONDAATJE ON GILLER SHORT LIST
THE PLAYBOY CLUB AXED BY NBC NEW YORK (Associated Press)
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
CanLit legend Michael Ondaatje will face off against two red-hot up-and-coming authors for this year’s $50,000 Scotiabank Giller Prize. Toronto-based Ondaatje made the prize short list, announced yesterday, for his novel The Cat’s Table, about an 11-year-old boy who journeys to England on a huge ocean liner in the early 1950s. He’ll face competition from Patrick deWitt and Esi Edugyan, two writers whose novels have repeatedly popped up on prize lists this fall. Victoria-based Edugyan made the Giller cut for Half-Blood Blues about black jazz musicians trying to survive in Europe during the Second World War. DeWitt is on the Giller list for The Sisters Brothers, a comical western set amid the 1850s California gold rush. Both books have also been shortlisted for Britain’s Man Booker Prize and for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Rounding out the Giller list are David Bezmozgis for his novel The Free World; Lynn Coady for her hockey goon novel The Antagonist; and Zsuzsi Gartner, for Better Living Through Plastic Explosives.
NBC’s Playboy bunnies are being replaced by Brian Williams. The network said yesterday that its 1960s period piece drama The Playboy Club is being cancelled, acting less than 24 hours after the new series drew only 3.5 million viewers for its third episode. It’s the first cancellation of the new fall TV season. Williams’ new primetime newsmagazine, Rock Center, will take over the 10 p.m. time slot on Mondays, starting Halloween night. Reruns of Prime Suspect will fill the hour for the next three weeks. The Playboy Club started weak, with five million viewers for its first episode, and didn’t improve. Set in a Chicago club and evoking the era and attitude made fashionable by Man Men, the drama was hurt by strong competition. Both Hawaii 5-0 on CBS and Castle on ABC are their networks’ strongest 10 p.m. dramas, said Bill Gorman of the website TV By the Numbers. NBC’s drama drew some mixed reviews and protests by activists who tried to encourage an advertiser boycott, deeming the material inappropriate for television.
BUNNY TALES
Mike Hale of the New York Times wrote that the series was “an unwieldy and mostly humdrum combination of mob tale and backstage musical.” In his pan, Steve Johnson of the Chicago Tribune harkened back to the magazine: “Like mean people or rainy Saturdays, the Playboy Club is, alas, a turn-off.” Williams has been assembling
talent in anticipation of a fall launch. Rock Center will feature Harry Smith and Kate Snow as correspondents, along with Meredith Vieira, Nancy Snyderman, Richard Engle, Matt Lauer and Ann Curry. NBC had not given the show a time slot but promised one would become available when one of the new shows failed.

CANADA NAMED WORLD’S BEST NATION FOR BUSINESS TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Forbes ranked Canada as the best country for business yesterday, moving up from fourth spot last year, helped by a lower overall tax burden. “While the U.S. is paralysed by fears of a double-dip recession and Europe struggles with sovereign debt issues, Canada’s economy has held up better than most,â€? the inuential U.S. business magazine wrote. Forbes noted that Canada ranked ninth among the 134 countries reviewed for tax burden compared with 23rd in the category for 2010. The magazine said the improvement was in part because of the introduction of the harmonized sales tax last year in Ontario and B.C. Forbes also cited lower corporate and employee tax rates for helping business. Canada beat out New Zealand and Hong Kong, which placed second and third respectively in the overall rankings. The U.S. ranked 10th, down from ninth a year ago.
BMO PREDICTS FLAT INTEREST RATES UNTIL 2013 TORONTO (Canadian Press)
A big Canadian bank predicts the slumping economy will put interest rates on hold, or moving lower, until at least 2013. In an interest rate outlook released yesterday, the Bank of Montreal said it does not expect interest rates to rise again until the early part of 2013. That’s about six months later than earlier forecasts that rates would stay at until the fall of 2012 as the Bank of Canada tries to boost the sagging economy. In the bank’s report, BMO Capital Markets senior economist Michael Gregory said the weaker global economy has squeezed commodities, the Canadian dollar and undermined growth in Canada. That has kept ination in check and made it more likely the Bank of Canada will hold the line on rates.

New York Yankees centre fielder Curtis Granderson stretches to catch the fly ball from Tiger Jhonny Peralta to end the sixth inning last night in Detroit. Saved by Granderson’s glove, Burnett allowed a run and four hits in 5 2-3 innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Granderson was on the Detroit team that went to the World Series in 2006, but the Tigers traded the popular outfielder to the Yankees as part of a three-team deal after the 2009 season. Max Scherzer, a pitcher Detroit received in the deal, left his mark on this series with an impressive Game 2 start. Then it was Granderson’s turn. After hitting 41 home runs during the regular season to become an MVP contender, Granderson made his biggest impact yesterday with his glove. The Yankees didn’t plan to start Burnett in this series, but they didn’t have much of a choice after Game 1 took two days to finish. So they sent the erratic right-hander to the mound, hoping for the best. Burnett is in the third season of a five-year, US$82.5 million contract. He’s been largely a disappointment, but he gave the Yankees the start they needed with the season on the line. Rafael Soriano relieved him in the sixth, and Jhonny Peralta lifted a fly to left-centre. Granderson came sprinting over and made a diving catch even more impressive than the first one, sliding across the outfield grass on his belly after making the grab.
YANKEES FORCE GAME 5 WITH WIN OVER DETROIT
DETROIT (Associated Press)
Curtis Granderson made two spectacular catches against his former team and A.J. Burnett came through when the Yankees needed him most, leading New York past the Detroit Tigers 10-1 last night to send their AL playoff series back to the Bronx for a decisive Game 5. Derek Jeter rebounded from a game-ending strikeout Monday, putting the Yankees ahead to stay with a two-run double in the third inning. Granderson also had an RBI double and New York broke it open with six runs in the eighth. Shaky all season, Burnett started only because Game 1 was suspended by rain Friday. He was in trouble in the first after loading the bases on walks but Granderson made a leaping grab of Don Kelly’s line drive in centre field, preventing at least three runs. Game 5 is Thursday night in New York. Rookie right-hander Ivan Nova, who shut down the Tigers in the opener, is expected to start against Doug Fister. Nova and Fister both came on as relievers Saturday after Game 1 started Friday night but was halted after 1 1-2 innings.
Every Thursday @ 4pm
Paul Goldschmidt hit a grand slam and tied a franchise post-season record with five RBIs, fellow Arizona rookie Josh Collmenter befuddled Milwaukee batters again and the Diamondbacks stayed alive in the NL division series with a 8-1 rout of the Brewers last night. Goldschmidt, who has made big hits a habit since he was called up from double-A Mobile on Aug. 1, gave Arizona a 7-1 lead in the fifth with a two-out, opposite-field homer to right off Shaun Marcum after Miguel Montero had been intentionally walked. Montero drove in two runs with a single and double. With an unorthodox overhand style he says comes from throwing tomahawks as a kid in the Michigan woods, Collmenter limited the Brewers to a run and two hits in seven innings. Corey Hart’s leadoff homer in the third was the only run Milwaukee has scored against the 25-year-old in 21 innings this season. David Hernandez and closer J.J. Putz each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the three-hitter that quieted, at least for one night, the big bats of the Brewers. Milwaukee leads the best-of-five 2-1. Game 4 is tonight in Phoenix. Collmenter (10-10 with a 3.38 earned-run average in the regular season) was chosen by manager Kirk Gibson over veteran lefty Joe Saunders to start. The pitcher from Homer, Mich., did not allow a hit after Hart’s home run, retiring 15 of his last 16 batters.
NBA TALKS BREAK DOWN, PRE-SEASON CANCELLED NEW YORK (Associated Press)
The NBA cancelled the remainder of the pre-season yesterday and will wipe out the first two weeks of the regular season if there is no labour agreement by Monday. “We were not able to make the progress that we hoped we could make and we were not able to continue the negotiations,” commissioner David Stern said after nearly four hours of talks between owners and players ended without gaining ground on a new deal. No further meetings are scheduled, making it even more likely the league will lose games to a work stoppage for the first time since 1998-99, when the season was reduced to 50 games. Stern and deputy commissioner Adam Silver said owners offered players a 50-50 split of basketball-related income. That’s below the 57 per cent that players were guaranteed under the previous collective bargaining agreement, but more than the 47 per cent union officials said was proposed to them. Players had offered to reduce their BRI guarantee to 53 per cent, which they said would have given owners back more than $1 billion US over six years. They say they won’t cut it further, at least for now.

In his audit, Vaughan found that the federal government’s approach to climate change was “disjointed, confused and non-transparent. As a result, there’s no way of telling whether Ottawa is on track to meet its targets for cutting greenhouse gases, despite spending more than $9 billion, Vaughan said. Unless there are major changes, he doubts Canada will meet its emission- reduction targets, even though they have been dramatically scaled back since the days of the Kyoto accord. The audit showed that targets are now 90 per cent lower than they were four years ago.
CANADA’S ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD TAKES DOUBLE HIT OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Canada’s environmental record was dealt a double blow yesterday, with a scathing federal audit and a European Commission decision to blacklist oilsands products. Environment Commissioner Scott Vaughan tabled a report saying the federal government’s knowledge about greenhouse-gas emissions and oilsands pollution is so spotty that key decisions are made without fully understanding the environmental consequences. Reports said the European Commission has decided to “All that foottreat exports from Alberta’s dragging on oilsands as dirtier than regulations to deal conventional oil – despite with climate change intense lobbying from the is coming back to Canadian government. bite the industry.â€? If the decision is backed – Climate activist up by member countries of Gillian McEachern the European Union, it would effectively block oilsands products from that market. “All that foot-dragging on regulations to deal with climate change is coming back to bite the industry,â€? said activist Gillian McEachern, climate and energy manager for Environmental Defence. Exports to Europe are negligible now, but Canadian ofďŹ cials are concerned about the signal it sends to other countries and the effect it will have on future export potential, said Canadian trade strategist Peter Clark. He said Canada has excellent grounds to challenge the European decision, “but I wouldn’t say it’s a tempest in a teapot. The government is taking it seriously.â€?

UNIVERSE EXPANSION STUDY EARNS PHYSICS NOBEL
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (Associated Press)
Three U.S.-born scientists won the Nobel Prize in physics yesterday for their studies of exploding stars that revealed that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said American Saul Perlmutter would share the 10 million kronor ($1.5 million) award with U.S.-Australian Brian Schmidt and U.S. scientist Adam Riess. Working in two separate research teams during the 1990s – Perlmutter in one and Schmidt and Riess in the other – the scientists raced to map the universe’s expansion by analyzing a particular type of supernovas, or exploding stars. They found that the light emitted by more than 50 distant supernovas was weaker than expected, a sign that the universe was expanding at an accelerating rate, the academy said. The academy said the three researchers were stunned by their own discoveries – they had expected to ďŹ nd that the expansion of the universe was slowing down. But both teams reached the opposite conclusion: faraway galaxies were racing away from each other at an ever-increasing speed. The acceleration is believed to be driven by dark energy, one of the great mysteries of the universe.

AMANDA KNOX RETURNS TO U.S. AFTER 4 YEARS IN ITALIAN PRISON SEATTLE (Associated Press)
VISA WORRIES SCUTTLE DALAI LAMA’S SOUTH AFRICA TRIP JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Associated Press)
The Dalai Lama has called off a visit to South Africa because he does not expect to get a visa, the Tibetan spiritual and political leader’s office said yesterday. In a statement from New Delhi, the Dalai Lama’s office said he had planned to leave his Indian exile home tomorrow, but after failing to receive a visa this week he was “now convinced that for whatever reason or reasons, the South African government finds it inconvenient to issue” a visa. South African foreign ministry officials had denied accusations they were bowing to pressure from China, which accuses the Dalai Lama of being a separatist. The Dalai Lama insists he is only seeking increased autonomy for Tibet, the homeland from which he has been exiled since 1959. Fellow Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu had invited the Dalai Lama to South Africa to celebrate his 80th birthday, and bitterly criticized the delay in the issuing of a visa. Rights groups, academics, opposition parties and newspapers in South Africa had pressed their government to grant the Dalai Lama a visa.
Amanda Knox returned to her hometown of Seattle yesterday and was as overcome with emotion as she was a day earlier in Italy, when she was acquitted on murder charges after four years in prison. “Thank you for being there for me,” she tearfully told her supporters in front of a crowd of international reporters. “I’m really overwhelmed right now,” she said at a news conference minutes after she was escorted off a British Airways flight out of London. “I was looking down from the airplane, and it seemed like everything wasn’t real.” Knox’s life turned around dramatically Monday when an Italian appeals court threw out her conviction in the sexual assault and fatal stabbing of her British roommate. Photos of Knox crying in the courtroom after the verdict was read appeared yesterday on the front pages of newspapers in Italy, the U.S. and around the world. Knox sobbed at the news conference and held her mother’s hand as her lawyer Theodore Simon said her acquittal “unmistakably announced to the world” that she
was not responsible for the killing of Meredith Kercher. Knox’s acquittal, fuelled by doubts over DNA evidence, stunned the victim’s family and angered the prosecution, which insists that she was among three people who killed Kercher, 21. Knox, 24, left Perugia’s Capanne prison Monday night amid cheers that a companion compared to those at a soccer stadium.
13
Knox was a University of Washington student studying abroad in Perugia when Kercher was killed in 2007. Prosecutor Giuliano Mignini expressed disbelief at the innocent verdicts of Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. Mignini maintains that Knox, Sollecito and another man killed Kercher during a lurid, drug-fueled sex game. Mignini said he will appeal to Italy’s highest criminal court after receiving the reasoning behind the acquittals, due within 90 days.
