APPLE CO-FOUNDER STEVE JOBS DIES CUPERTINO, Calif. (Associated Press)
Steve Jobs, the Apple founder and former CEO who invented and masterfully marketed ever-sleeker gadgets that transformed everyday technology, from the personal computer to the iPod and iPhone, died yesterday. He was 56. Apple announced his death without giving a specific cause. He died peacefully, according to a statement from family members who said they were present. “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives,” Apple’s board said in a statement. Jobs had battled cancer in 2004 and underwent a liver transplant in 2009 after taking a leave of absence for unspecified health problems. He took another leave of absence in January – his third since his health problems began – and officially resigned in August. Jobs became Apple’s chairman and handed the CEO job over to his hand-picked successor, Tim Cook. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor.” Cook wrote in an email to Apple’s employees. The news Apple fans and shareholders had been dreading came the day after Apple unveiled its latest version of the iPhone, just one in a procession of devices that shaped technology and society while Jobs was running the company. Jobs started Apple with a high school friend in a Silicon Valley garage in 1976, was forced out a decade later and returned in 1997 to rescue the company. He helped change computers from a geeky hobbyist’s obsession to a necessity of modern life at work and home, and in the process he upended not just personal technology but the cellphone and music industries. For transformation of American industry, he has

He has long been linked to his personal computer-age contemporary, Bill Gates, and has drawn comparisons to other creative geniuses such as Walt Disney. Perhaps most influentially, Jobs in 2001 launched the iPod, which offered “1,000 songs in your pocket.” Over the next 10 years, its white earphones and thumb-dial control seemed to become more ubiquitous than the wristwatch. In 2007 came the touch-screen iPhone, joined a year
later by Apple’s App Store, where developers could sell iPhone “apps” which made the phone a device not just for making calls but also for managing money, editing photos, playing games and social networking. And in 2010, Jobs introduced the iPad, a tablet-sized, all-touch computer that took off even though market analysts said no one really needed one. By 2011, Apple had become the second-largest company of any kind in the United States by market value. In August, it briefly surpassed Exxon Mobil as the most valuable U.S. company.

PORT MANN BRIDGE COULD BE A GIANT PARK IN THE AIR JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)
Imagine an aerial park perched above the Fraser River featuring two kilometres of trees and green space with meandering pedestrian paths and a public plaza in the middle. It’s an alternate vision for the Port Mann Bridge, which is now slated to be demolished once the new 10-lane toll bridge rising beside it opens just over a year from now. The idea of saving the old bridge as a unique park was quietly floated by a Metro Vancouver manager at a regional parks committee meeting yesterday. SFU City Program director Gordon Price rates it a long shot – but a fascinating one. “Wow – that would be spectacular,” he said. “I love the idea. It’s just so audacious and jaw-dropping to think of what the possibilities might be.” Tempting as it is, Price said, it probably won’t happen. The provincial government has always said the existing bridge must be torn down to eliminate the ongoing maintenance costs. Victoria is also determined to tear down the old bridge so there’s no way it could ever re-open as a free crossing for motorists in com-
petition with the toll bridge. Old bridges and railway viaducts have been turned into elevated parks elsewhere in the world. New York has the High Line Park, a similar rail viaduct in Manhattan that was saved from demolition and transformed into a popular linear park and public space. “It’s been spectacularly successful, generating billions of dollars of associated development,” Price said. “It’s one of the best things that’s happened in New York.”
Price couldn’t think of anything in the world like a Port Mann park across the Fraser, offering incredible mountain, city and river views. The bridge would also fit nicely with the Experience The Fraser master plan for a vast network of trails on both sides of the Fraser River linking parks and destinations all the way from Steveston and Tsawwassen to Hope. “You can’t go too far wrong in joining up parts of the region with greenways,” he said.

SLANDER IN MISSION COUNCIL CHAMBER ALLEGED MISSION RECORD (Black Press)
District of Mission Coun. Paul Horn has been served with a notice of civil claim alleging slander made in council chambers, according to documents filed in the Supreme Court of B.C. registry on Monday. Kalvan Gill, a director and officer of Timberwood Equipment Inc. in Mission, alleges that at a regular council meeting during the second week of October 2009, Horn made defamatory remarks. The statement of claim says the words were “calculated to disparage the Plaintiffs in their business and affairs,” and consequently “seriously damaged” their reputations, causing distress and embarrassment. The document goes on to say that Horn demonstrated malice, a lack of good faith and has “abused his public office in his dealings with Gill, the Gill Group of Companies and Timberwood.” The plaintiffs are asking for general damage, interest pursuant to the Court Order Interest Act and associated costs of the civil claim. The allegations are unproven and Horn has not yet filed his response.
PROBATION OPTIONS EXPANDING: BOND TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)
Attorney General Shirley Bond has introduced changes to B.C. law that add new sentencing options for street disorder, unsafe driving and other provincial offences. The amendments would allow charges of being drunk in public to be laid under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act instead of the Criminal Code. Offenders could be placed on probation with conditions such as paying for damages, writing an apology and performing community service, and a new offence of breaching a probation order would be available. Probation options are also being added to existing fines and jail terms for serious Motor Vehicle Act offences such as careless driving.

JARROD BACON’S CONSPIRACY TRIAL BEGINS VIKKI HOPES (Abbotsford News)
The conspiracy trial of Jarrod Bacon and co-accused Wayne Scott began yesterday in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, but evidence will not be presented until at least next week. In the meantime, lawyers from both sides are arguing over legal issues, including whether certain evidence should be excluded. Bacon and Scott have each been charged with one count of conspiracy to traffic in a controlled substance stemming from an undercover police sting, called E-Pintle, that targeted members of the Red Scorpions and UN gangs. Police allege that Bacon, 28, and Scott, in his 50s, were working with the Red Scorpions at the time of
their arrests in November 2009. E-Pintle involved a team of undercover officers posing as criminals who could import $3 million of cocaine from Mexico to the Lower Mainland. Police allege the two gangs each deposited $100,000 with the undercover operators in exchange for bringing in 100 kilograms of cocaine. Bacon and Scott were arrested in Abbotsford, as were alleged UN Gang members Nicholas Christopher Wester, 32, and Daryl Robert Johnson, 33. Douglas Edward Vanalstine, 51, who police said was the UN leader at the time, was arrested in the Okanagan. The trial for Wester, Johnson and Vanalstine – all charged with conspiracy and possession for the purpose of trafficking – is scheduled to begin on Nov. 14.

Civil liberties and privacy advocates are raising concerns about proposed changes to British Columbia’s privacy laws. The provincial government has tabled legislation that would change the way residents’ data is stored and allow for more sharing between government ministries. The B.C. Civil Liberties Association’s Michael Vonn says it means government departments will share the public’s information without permission, and he rejects the suggestion that it will lead to a more efficient government.
METH LAB CHEMICALS DUMPED NEAR SCHOOL LANGLEY TIMES (Black Press)
Someone decided to dump potentially hazardous waste from a clandestine meth lab in a vacant lot near a Langley elementary school last week. Police discovered five 45-gallon drums and another 40 20-litre pails containing more liquid after they spotted a vehicle parked down the street from Willoughby Elementary School on Friday. The vehicle managed to flee the scene. The Clandestine Lab Response Team determined the liquid was waste from a meth lab.

FLAG LAW PROPOSAL
CANADIAN PRESS
Minister of Canadian Heritage James Moore speaks to the issues regarding the rights to fly the Canadian flag during a press conference in the foyer of the House of Commons last month.
FLAG LAW WON’T APPLY TO MPS: TORY SAYS OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
The Maple Leaf may be forever, but it isn’t for everyone. A proposed new Conservative law that enforces Canadians’ right to fly the flag won’t apply to MPs on Parliament Hill, Heritage Minister James Moore said yesterday. A private member’s bill, backed by Moore, would make it illegal to stop someone from displaying the Maple Leaf. The bill addresses a minor irritant that primarily involves condominium owners and apartment
dwellers, where signed contracts may forbid hanging items such as flags, flower baskets and satellite dishes outside the building. Condo boards and building owners, on penalty of jail time, would no longer be able to enforce such rules against nationalist flag-wavers if the legislation is passed. But what’s good for the Canadian goose is not necessarily good for the parliamentary gander, Moore said when asked about rules forbidding MPs from having a flag in the window of their parliamentary offices. Asked specifically if the proposed law will apply to MPs, Moore said “No.” “Members of Parliament voluntarily agree to the Board of Internal Economy consensus on how we should operate on the Hill. We choose to do that ourselves.” But, asked a reporter, don’t condo owners voluntarily agree to the rules of the condo? At this, Moore raised the white flag and beat a hasty retreat from the scrum without a response.

The federal government says Canadians have donated $70 million to help fight the drought in Africa and that it will keep its promise to match that amount. International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda said yesterday that the contribution will boost government spending on drought relief to $142 million. The Canadian donations to registered charities were made between early July and mid-September. The dollar figure is only a preliminary estimate, with the final amount still being tabulated.
FLAHERTY CALLS FOR PRAGMATIC RECOVERY PLANS NEW YORK (Canadian Press)
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is calling for pragmatic and flexible plans to help support the global economic recovery. Flaherty told the Canada-U.S. Securities Markets Summit in New York that the uncertainty around the world is a major inhibitor to growth. Canada has urged European leaders to commit to an expanded emergency fund to deal with their sovereign debt problems.

NEW RCMP HQ MAKES NOD TO PAST
FEDS PROMISE TO MATCH $70M RAISED FOR AFRICA
A Toronto city councillor thinks it’s time to revisit the idea of making the city a province. Giorgio Mammoliti feels the city is getting shafted by the federal and provincial governments. Mammoliti says he’s just putting the idea out there to see what people think, but he believes the city would benefit from transfer payments from Ottawa. Former mayor Mel Lastman had the same idea in 1999, but had a change of heart a year later when he said it wouldn’t work constitutionally.
MORE PROVINCES GIVEN RCMP ULTIMATUM VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Two more Canadian provinces have confirmed they too are facing the threat that the federal government may pull RCMP officers in 2014 if a deal on a new contract is not reached by the end of next month. Last week, B.C. Solicitor General Shirley Bond announced the federal government had made the same threat if B.C. doesn’t sign a suggested 20-year policing contract by the end of November. Spokeswomen from Newfoundland and P.E.I. say they are facing the deadline, too.

Its namesake served as commissioner from 1974-1977. Nadon, who died in 2009, was described as “a visionary leader who made significant contributions throughout his 36 years of service.” It was under Nadon that the first female cadet troop began training to enter the RCMP’s uniformed ranks in 1974.
OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Opposition MPs are urging the federal government to openly discuss its new perimeter security deal with the United States. The deal comes with a $1-billion price tag for new border facilities and programs to smooth the flow of trade and travel. In the House of Commons, New Democrat MP Brian Masse asked how Canadians could trust the Tories given their poor track record as negotiators. Prime Minister Stephen Harper says discussions with Washington continue.

Turkey’s parliament has extended by another year a mandate allowing the military to carry out cross-border operations against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq. Lawmakers voted yesterday by a show of hands to extend the permission, which expires on Oct. 17. It was the mandate’s fourth successive extension. Turkish warplanes have bombed suspected Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq since mid-August in response to a surge in rebel violence in Turkey. Dozens of security personnel and at least 14 civilians have died in attacks since July.
An EU prosecutor will travel to Albania to investigate allegations that a criminal network sold organs of civilian captives there during the 1998-99 Kosovo war. Xavier de Marnhac, the head of the EU mission in Kosovo, announced that plan in Albania yesterday, saying the investigator will arrive there in the coming weeks. Council of Europe investigator Dick Marty alleged last year that Kosovo PM Hashim Thaci and other rebel commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army ran detention centres on Albania’s border with Kosovo, where civilian captives were killed and their organs sold on the black market.
Russia’s intelligence service says it has detained an alleged Chinese spy who tried to obtain designs of an advanced missile system. The Federal Security Service said the Chinese national, who worked as an interpreter for visiting Chinese officials, tried to buy documentation for the S-300 surface-to-air missile system. It said in a statement that prosecutors submitted the case to a court yesterday, although the man was detained last October. The S-300 is capable of shooting down planes, cruise missiles and ballistic missile warheads at ranges over 144 km and altitudes of 90,000 feet.
Wikipedia is protesting a proposed law in Italy to severely limit publication of wiretapped conversations – such as embarrassing transcripts of Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi’s phone chats that have emerged in a prostitution probe. Lawmakers began debate on the proposal yesterday. The proposal would oblige news and other websites to run corrections within 48 hours if the subject of the content claims it is personally harmful. Wikipedia’s Italian site argues there’s no impartial party to decide what constitutes harm.
Angry and frustrated, Greek civil servants walked off the job yesterday, paralyzing the government and public transport to protest ever-deeper austerity measures and seemingly ineffectual financial policies. At least 16,000 protesters converged in Athens, and another 10,000 gathered in the northern city of Thessaloniki, chanting slogans, banging drums and blowing whistles. Air traffic controllers joined the 24-hour strike, grounding all flights to and from Greek airports. State hospitals were running on emergency staff, while lawyers, teachers and tax officers also didn’t work.

PALESTINIANS SEEK FULL MEMBERSHIP IN UN CULTURAL AGENCY PARIS (Associated Press)
Palestinians cleared their first hurdle yesterday to full membership in the UN cultural agency, an official said, as they expand and accelerate their push for international recognition, despite opposition from the United States and Israel. The Palestinians are also seeking a foothold in the World Trade Organization and won partnership status this week in the Council of Europe, the continent’s leading human rights body. None of this will solve the conflicts with Israel over security, violence and borders that for decades have prevented a Palestinian state from coming into existence. But it may up the pressure at UN headquarters and weigh on fresh efforts to resuscitate peace talks. The UNESCO request is being seen as a test case indicating the breadth of support for the Palestinian push. The Palestinian delegation, which has had observer status at UNESCO since 1974, presented a draft resolution to the agency’s executive board yesterday,
according to diplomats there. A UNESCO official later confirmed that the board voted overwhelmingly to send it to a vote of the body’s 193 members, two-thirds of whom must approve any request for full membership. The vote has not been scheduled, but will take place at UNESCO’s General Conference, which runs from Oct. 25 to Nov. 10. The diplomats and the official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

AFGHAN SECURITY FORCES FOIL KARZAI ASSASSINATION PLOT KABUL, Afghanistan (Associated Press)
Afghan intelligence officials said yesterday that they had broken up a cell that plotted to kill President Hamid Karzai, arresting six people in Kabul who they claimed were affiliated with al-Qaida and the Haqqani militant group. Intelligence service spokesman Latifullah Mashal said that the cell included one of Karzai’s bodyguards, as well as a professor at Kabul university and three college students. Mashal described the cell as the “most sophisticated and educated group in Kabul”, and said that it had assisted Hamid Karzai Pakistani militants sent to the Afghan capital to carry out terror attacks. He did not say when they were arrested. He said the group, which also allegedly planned attacks in Kabul, the United States and Europe, was recruited by an Egyptian and a Bangladeshi based in Pakistan. The Haqqani militant group, a lethal threat to U.S.-led coalition forces, has been blamed by U.S. intelligence officials and others for a number of high-profile attacks in Kabul in recent years, including hotel bombings and the September 12 assault on the American Embassy.

“Tax Wall Street,” she said. “Those who make all the money need to start paying their fair share.” The Occupy Wall Street protests started Sept. 17 with a few dozen demonstrators who tried to pitch tents in front of the New York Stock Exchange. On Tuesday, CBS reported that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney called the protest “class warfare” at an appearance at a Florida retirement community.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said yesterday she will not run for president, leaving little doubt that the eventual Republican nominee will come from the current field of contenders. After months of leaving her fans guessing, Palin said in a statement that she and her husband Todd “devote ourselves to God, family and country.” She said her decision maintains that order. Palin told conservative radio host Mark Levin that she would not consider a third party candidacy because it would assure President Barack Obama’s re-election. Sen. John McCain plucked Palin from relative obscurity in 2008 by naming her as his running mate. She electrified Republican activists for a while, delivering a well-received speech at the party’s national convention. But Palin later seemed overwhelmed by the national spotlight, faltering at times in televised interviews even when asked straightforward questions. Palin’s announcement was much anticipated but not surprising. Her popularity had plummeted in polls lately, even though she remained a darling to many hard-core conservatives. Some Republicans felt she waited and teased too long about a presidential candidacy.

REAL STEEL TEAM THINKING ABOUT A FRANCHISE
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
If the Canadian director helming Real Steel has his way, the new robot-boxing movie executive produced by Steven Spielberg will definitely get a sequel and maybe even a slew of them. The film, a mixture of Rocky and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial with a touch of Transformers, is set in a not-too-distant future when robots replace humans in the professional boxing world. Shawn Levy thinks there’s a good chance that Real Steel will become a franchise, and he gives a lot of credit to his pint-sized star Dakota Goyo, who just turned 12. “I certainly directed him a lot but there’s some scenes where I just got out of the way because that boy is talented, that boy has that extra something that Ricky Schroder had in The Champ, or that Elliott (played by Henry Thomas) in E.T. had,” Levy said. Goyo plays a sullen young boy who is dealing with the death of his mother and is forced to reunite with his deadbeat dad (Hugh Jackman), who is struggling to get by as a fight promoter. The pair don’t get off on the right foot but start to bond as they work on their own robot combatant, Atom.

IDOL’S MCCREERY TAKES NEXT STEP
NETFLIX DODGES CALLS FOR CRTC REGULATION
NASHVILLE (Associated Press)
Performing in front of millions of people for the ďŹ rst time, beating out thousands of other competitors, defeating nerves and self-doubt – winning American Idol may have been the easy part. Now Scotty McCreery has to ďŹ gure out how to turn victory into a career. One doesn’t always translate into other. But the 17-year-old isn’t thinking of his ďŹ rst post-Idol album, Clear As Day, as a make-or-break situation. He prefers the long view. He wouldn’t mind being the next superstar alum of Idol, successfully transitioning in the way stars Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson have. If not, though, he’s still going to play baseball in the spring. He’s still going to college in a year. He’s still ... Scotty. And superstar status won’t change much. “People, they bring that up a lot,â€? McCreery said. “For me it’s not so much about that aspect. The other Idols, they have a lot of success in what they’re doing. They get to do music every day for the rest of their lives. They may not have the most mainstream,
MONTREAL (Canadian Press)
Online services like Netix won’t be subject to Canadian regulations because there’s no clear evidence that consumers are cutting the cord on their cable or satellite TV subscriptions, the CRTC said yesterday. Online and mobile programming is complementary to the television content distributed by cable, satellite and broadcast systems, the CRTC said. “There is no clear evidence that Canadians are reducing or cancelling their television subscriptions,â€? the regulator said. “Some online programming services have established viable business models and are competing in the marketplace for programming rights and viewers,â€? the CRTC said. The CRTC did not mention Netix by name, but group from the telecommunications, broadcasting, cable and satellite and production sectors, along with unions, had asked the regulator to hold public consultations on digital services like Netix. U.S.-based Netix has attracted more than one million Canadian subscribers since beginning to offer its online service in this country about a year ago.

American Idol winner Scotty McCreery is aiming for stardom.
N.C., he was a pitcher and a member of the chorus who occasionally participated in small talent shows. A year later he’s a TV star, a veteran of a national tour and he and his family face a myriad of decisions that could have an effect on his life for decades to come. “There’s never been a teenage boy to really make it in country music so there’s no formula for what he should do, Scotty’s mother, Judy, said. “So I do sit back and wonder if this is the right move, are these the right songs, is this the right atmosphere? Things have been chugging along and all the right things are happening and all the right people are in his path, so I’m just trying to let go and let nature take its course. Something’s working. While competing in Los Angeles, McCreery met most of the former winners. All came bearing advice. “A lot of it was enlightening, McCreery said. “For the most part they had one common theme: Stay true to yourself and don’t let the business get to you because it’s a completely different world out there than this Idol bubble and the life we knew before. They said just stay true to your boots and it will all be good.

WESTJET PLANES FLEW LESS FULL IN SEPTEMBER MONTREAL (Canadian Press)
WestJet Airlines planes were less full in September as growth in passenger traffic failed to keep pace with increased capacity, despite higher seat sale purchases. The Calgary-based carrier reported yesterday a load factor of 74.7 per cent for September compared with 75.5 per cent a year ago. WestJet’s traffic, as measured by revenue passenger miles, increased 6.9 per cent while capacity grew eight per cent in the period. “September traffic fell slightly short of our capacity growth despite increased fare sale activity. Forward bookings, however, remain healthy as we begin to transition to our winter schedule,” WestJet president and CEO Gregg Saretsky said. Overall, the airline flew 76,000 more passengers this September compared to last year.
CDN HOUSING PRICES ROSE IN Q3: ROYAL LEPAGE TORONTO (Canadian Press)

The national average price of a detached bungalow rose the most – 7.8 per cent year-over-year to $349,974. However, prices varied widely depending on the local market. For instance, detached bungalows in Vancouver had an average price of about $1 million – nearly three times the national average. The Canadian national price of a standard two-storey detached home rose 7.7 per cent to $388,218 and the price of a standard condominium 5.7 per cent to $239,300. In Vancouver, the average price fo two-storey homes was $1.14 million and condos were going for about $513,500. ADD YOUR

RYAN KESLER MAKES NO APOLOGIES FOR NUDE PHOTO
VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Ryan Kesler is used to stirring things up on the ice. Now the Vancouver Canucks centre has caused a stir in the NHL team’s dressing room by posing nude for ESPN the Magazine’s The Body Issue. “I didn’t recognize him this morning when he came in with clothes on,” coach Alain Vigneault said with a laugh yesterday. “I saw the picture once. It was interesting.” Kesler is among 21 athletes featured in the issue. His photo shows a very fit Kesler leaning against a wall. The shot is a side view, so only the rippling muscles on Kesler’s arm and his sculptured leg can be seen. Canuck captain Henrik Sedin grinned nervously when asked about the picture. “I didn’t take a deeper look,” he said. Kesler shrugged off the teasing from his teammates. “Jealously!” he said. “That’s all they’ve got. “It turned out well. I had a lot of fun doing it. That’s pure me.” The 27-year-old from Livonia, Mich., discussed doing the pictures with his wife before agreeing to the photo shoot.
PHOENIX (Associated Press)
Ryan Roberts hit a grand slam, Chris Young had the first two-homer game in Arizona’s post-season history and Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-6 last night to force Game 5 in the NL division series. A day after rolling over the Brewers 8-1, the Diamondbacks struck quickly and often in Game 4, scoring five runs in the first inning off Randy Wolf. The Diamondbacks became the second team – with the 1977 Dodgers – to hit grand slams in consecutive playoff games. Arizona evened the series at 2-2 and sent it back to Milwaukee for the decisive game Friday. It will be a rematch of Game 1 between 21-game winner Ian Kennedy of the Diamondbacks and fellow right-hander Yovani Gallardo. Written off by many after being outscored 13-5 in the first two games, baseball’s best rally team – 48 comeback wins during the regular season – has put itself in position to become just the eighth team overall to win a best-of-five series after trailing 0-2. Young had three RBIs and Aaron Hill hit a solo homer for Arizona’s first four-homer game in the post-season. Pinch hitter Collin Cowgill added a two-run single and the bullpen held on after a less-than-crisp outing by starter Joe Saunders to keep Milwaukee from winning a post-season series for the first time since reaching the 1982 World Series. Paul Goldschmidt was the star in Game 3, becoming the third rookie ever to hit a grand slam in the playoffs. He had the crowd buzzing when he strode to the plate against Wolf with the bases loaded in the first inning. He couldn’t come through; Wolf struck him out looking.
STILL ALIVE
CARDINALS TOP PHILLIES 5-3
“She supported me 100 per cent,” he said. “I thought it would be a good thing to do. “I’m happy I did it.” Canuck goaltender Roberto Luongo said he also was asked to pose, but said no. “I declined the invitation,” he said. “This body is for one set of eyes only. “Unfortunately, Kess accepted.” Asked what he thought about the pictures, Luongo shook his head. “I have no comment.” Kesler won the Selke Trophy last season as the league’s top defensive forward. He had 66 points, including a career-high 41 goals. Kesler won’t be in the lineup when the Stanley Cup finalist Canucks open their season against the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight. He underwent hip surgery during the summer and isn’t sure when he will return. The Body Issue features both male and female athletes. Also pictured are Olympic snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler, Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin, U.S. women’s soccer team goaltender Hope Solo, and New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes.
ST. LOUIS (Associated Press)
David Freese homered, doubled and drove in four runs as the St. Louis Cardinals tagged playoff nemesis Roy Oswalt and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 last night, forcing a deciding fifth game in their NL division series. Centre fielder Jon Jay made a sliding catch on Placido Polanco’s soft fly for the final out, and was already pointing his index finger before he got to his feet. Now it’s back to Philadelphia for Game 5 on Friday night. Roy Halladay, who won the opener for the Phillies, will face St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has already called it a dream matchup. The 102-win Phillies are favoured to win it all. But first they must dispose of the wild-card Cardinals, who clinched a playoff spot on the last day of the season and have gotten the best of two members of the Phils’ star-studded rotation. And suddenly, this first-round series has gotten squirrelly for the Phillies. An omen, maybe: Right after Oswalt threw a pitch in the fifth, a squirrel darted across the plate. Albert Pujols was hitless in four at-bats in what could have been his final home game with the Cardinals. He received thunderous cheers every trip to the plate from a standing room crowd of 47,071, second-largest at six-year-old Busch Stadium.
What do Cory Schneider, Alex Burrows, & Ryan Kesler have in common?

WOODS GETS ENDORSEMENT DEAL WITH ROLEX WATCHES SAN MARTIN, Calif. (Associated Press)
Tiger Woods has his first major endorsement since his downfall two years ago, announcing a deal yesterday with Rolex to be one of its ambassadors. Woods had lost five major endorsements in the two years since he was exposed for serial adultery and eventually divorced. He previously had a watch deal with Tag Heuer, which
Active youth | Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na will help promote the first Winter Youth Games, to be held in Austria in January. dropped him two months ago. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Woods earlier this year announced a deal in Japan to endorse a heat rub product for Kowa Company Ltd., although that was geared exclusively for Japanese markets. The Rolex deal is far more significant, and it was announced the day Tiger Woods Woods returned to the PGA Tour at the Frys.com Open. His agent at Excel Sports Management, Mark Steinberg, promised more deals to come.

“This makes a big statement,” Steinberg said. “I think this shows me where people are with Tiger Woods.” Woods has lost endorsement deals with AT&T, Accenture, Tag Heuer, Gatorade and Gillette since his downfall. Steinberg said Rolex would be the first of a “couple of announcements” related to endorsements, including a deal for Woods’ golf bag. He has had his foundation logo on the bag since AT&T dropped him a month after Woods’ sex scandal.

SPANISH DUCHESS, 85, WEDS YOUNGER COMMONER SEVILLE, Spain (Associated Press)
A wealthy, 85-year-old Spanish duchess considered the world’s most title-laden noble married a civil servant 25 years her junior yesterday, shrugging off her children’s qualms and celebrating by kicking off her shoes and dancing flamenco. A crowd of several hundred clapped and roared its approval as the Duchess of Alba waved, smiled and danced on a red carpet after her wedding to Alfonso Diez at Palacio de las Duenas, her 15th-century residence in the cobblestoned old quarter of Seville. Diez stood close by in a dark suit, smiling and holding an outstretched arm at the ready, as if to catch his bride if she stumbled. The duchess hiked up her dress as she performed a few whirling steps of Spain’s quintessential art form in the city perhaps best known for it. With her frizzy white hair, squeaky voice and wildly colourful clothes, the duchess is among Spain’s most famous people. Her full name – take a deep breath – is Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva. She goes by simply Cayetana, and is a distant relative of Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill.
