FOUR MURDER CHARGES FOR P.G. MAN PRINCE GEORGE (Prince George Free Press)

They were loved and they are missed, and now the man who has been charged with murdering them will have to face court, as well as the families of the daughters, mothers, sisters and friends of those he is accused of killing. In a press conference yesterday morning, Insp. Brendan Fitzpatrick with E Division Major Crime announced 21-year-old Cody Allan Legebokoff of Prince George has been charged with first degree murder in connection with the deaths of 35-year-old Jill Stacey Stuchenko, 35-year-old Cynthia Cody Legebokoff Frances Maas and 23-year-old Natasha Lynn Montgomery. He was arrested for these murders while in custody awaiting trial for the murder of 15-year-old Loren Donn Leslie from Fraser Lake. Legebokoff first came to the attention of police when a pair of officers noticed his vehicle coming out of a forestry service road last November. Stopping him lead to them discovering evidence which, in turn, concluded with them finding the body of Leslie. “Mr. Legebokoff was not known to us. He had minor police contact if any at all. He had friends in the community. Many people are surprised by this,” Fitzpatrick said.

groups can get a flu shot by paying a dispensing fee. The influenza vaccine is formulated each year to target the dominant strains of the respiratory virus that infects between 10 and 20 per cent of the population each year. The vaccine program was expanded in 2009 with the emergence of the H1N1 strain around the world. With pharmacists trained to provide the injections, about 40 per cent of B.C. residents received the vaccine in the largest mass immunization in Canadian history. There were 55 deaths in B.C. related to H1N1, mostly of people with underlying medical conditions. Hundreds of people die each year from seasonal influenza. B.C. residents can find the nearest flu shot clinic by calling HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 or using the online B.C. flu clinic locator at www.health.gov.bc.ca/flu/

JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)

A potentially deadly marine flu virus found on many salmon farms worldwide has now been discovered in wild sockeye salmon off B.C.’s central coast. Infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) has never before been reported off B.C.’s coast but was found in two of 48 sockeye smolts tested recently, according to SFU fishery statistician Rick Routledge. “It is highly contagious and lethal to Atlantic salmon,” he said, adding the effects on sockeye are unknown. The juvenile sockeye came from Rivers Inlet, about 100 kilometres north of a large concentration of salmon farms off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. The virus is the European strain of ISA and researchers suspect it came to B.C. through Atlantic salmon eggs imported from areas such as Iceland before infecting wild stocks. “The only plausible explanation I can find is that it came from the fish farms,” Routledge said. The data wasn’t tabled before the Cohen Commission, which last month heard evidence on the potential threat to sockeye from salmon farms, because the test results only just came back, Routledge said.

He tested the batch of underweight fish on the suggestion of biologist Alexandra Morton, who has been at the forefront of anti-aquaculture campaigns and has spent years researching the potential spread of pathogens from fish farms. The B.C. Salmon Farmers Association said it has not yet been able to review the findings and said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has yet to confirm them.

An industry representative said B.C. farmed Atlantic salmon have never tested positive for the virus. If it has arrived here, he said, it would not likely pose as serious a risk to wild salmon. But Morton said ISA-like symptoms have been reported in B.C. farmed salmon since 2006 and said the virus poses a “cataclysmic biological threat to life” in the North Pacific.

PROVINCE MOVES TO RAISE GAS TAX FOR TRANSLINK JEFF NAGEL (BC Local News)

The province has introduced legislation to raise gas taxes two cents a litre in Metro Vancouver to help fund TransLink’s expansion plan and build the Evergreen Line. The increase, requested this month by a majority vote of Metro mayors, would take effect next April and is expected to quickly pass with the support of the NDP.

‘COP JUSTIFIED IN TASERING 11-YR-OLD BOY’: POLICE CHIEF WEST VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Police were convinced an armed, deaf, 11-year-old was violent and a danger to himself and others when they used a Taser on him following a confrontation in northern B.C. last April, a police report has said. Chief Pete Lepine of the West Vancouver Police Department said in a news release yesterday that the RCMP officers involved that day, faced a dire situation that had little chance of a publicly acceptable outcome.

Vancouver police say sophisticated software is allowing them to identify more Stanley Cup rioters, even when they start out with only a partial image of a suspect committing a crime. Inspector Les Yeo says the partial image can be “tagged” allowing a computer to search other video to find a match to help identify the rioter, even some who were covering their faces.

PRESSURE GROWS FOR DISABILITY SUPPORT TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)

A B.C. Liberal MLA has joined opposition calls for an overhaul of services to developmentally disabled people, as the provincial agency responsible struggles with a growing and aging caseload. NDP MLAs called in the legislature yesterday for an outside review of Community Living B.C., the agency responsible for developmentally disabled people once they are adults. B.C. Liberal MLA Randy Hawes rejected the NDP motion as “too simplistic,” but said his constituents need more help than they are getting. “There are people who have looked after their kids forever, and they’re aging out,” Hawes told reporters after an emotional debate in the legislature. “They’re 80 years old with 50- and 60-year-old children who need to have

some service, and we never knew they existed.” The board of directors of Community Living B.C. fired CEO Rick Mowles on Friday, after a series of controversies including the announced closure of a work program for developmentally disabled people at a recycling facility in Maple Ridge. CLBC has been phasing out some group homes as facilities and residents have aged, moving to home-share arrangements with contracted caregivers. During legislature debate, Hawes described one family whose developmentally disabled son grew to more than six feet tall and became violent as he reached his 20s. He was put in a home-share but that lasted only two weeks. “It was a fight, a real hard fight, to find a space for him,” Hawes said. “Definitely, he has to be in a group home.”

Police say their Pathfinder left the highway, travelled across the grass median and into the southbound lanes where it struck a southbound blue Ford pick-up truck head-on. The driver of the Ford pick-up was taken to Nanaimo Regional Hospital and pronounced dead at the hospital.

POLICE AGENT TESTIFIES AT BACON DRUG TRIAL ABBOTSFORD NEWS (Black Press)

‘TOO MUCH TIME HAS BEEN WASTED’

CANADIAN PRESS

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty used a speech in Dublin yesterday to issue his toughest warning yet about the need for Europeans to resolve their debt crisis before it sets off another global recession.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty used a speech in Dublin yesterday to issue his toughest warning yet about the need for Europeans to resolve their debt crisis before it sets off another global recession. “If this crisis is left unaddressed, it will eventually become too big for Europe to solve. This is why immediate action is needed. Delays will only make necessary choices more difficult, and this crisis more costly,” he told the Ireland Canada Business Association. Fresh from a meeting of G20 finance ministers in Paris on the weekend, Flaherty slammed European authorities for not moving faster to address the financial turmoil battering Greece, Italy and other countries and said a failure to act now could precipitate another global downturn like the widespread 2008-09 slump. “What started as a sovereign debt crisis in smaller countries in Europe in the spring of 2010 has now spread to larger European countries, causing extreme stress in the European financial sector and threatening global growth,” he said. “This is the world’s most immediate and pressing problem. It threatens Europe, and it threatens the strong, sustainable, and balanced growth that G20 countries have made their priority. It is threatening

Fraser Valley

to bring the world to the verge of another recession.” He has for months been urging European leaders to push harder to resolve the debt problems on the continent. And Flaherty joined with his G20 counterparts on the weekend in a call for Europe’s financial captains to “decisively address” their debt challenges with a comprehensive bailout plan in time for the European Union summit on Oct. 23. “Too much time has been wasted. Too many opportunities have been missed,” he said yesterday. “Unless decisive action is taken urgently, our nations will once again be forced to respond to a full-blown global crisis, albeit this time without the full arsenal of policy weapons at our disposal. “A definitive solution that could have been delivered before the G20 meeting this weekend in Paris has been promised by the Cannes summit (next month),” he remarked. “Quite frankly, Europe’s response over the past year has been disappointing. “To be clear, this crisis could have been contained. Instead, it was allowed to grow. This crisis has now claimed Dexia and placed Europe’s banking sector in jeopardy. Is this not a sufficient signal that action is needed now? What will it take for Europe to take decisive action and put an end to this crisis, once and for all?”

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz says legislation that will allow the federal government to wipe out the monopoly powers of the Canadian Wheat Board will be introduced today. And he promises it will be passed before the end of the calendar year. The wheat board is still waiting for Ritz to respond to its list of what it would need to keep going without its monopoly. Among other things the board wants Ottawa to provide $225 million to secure grain and conduct business and another $200 million to subsidize risk guarantees.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has nominated two Ontario judges to fill vacancies at the Supreme Court of Canada. Justice Andromache Karakatsanis and Justice Michael J. Premier Darrell Dexter says no one wants to be responsible for a badly damaged ship that’s been stranded off Nova Scotia for nearly a month. Dexter has been pushing the federal government to accept responsibility for the MV Miner, which ran aground off Cape Breton on Sept. 20 while being towed to a scrapyard in Turkey. Dexter has said the province is the innocent victim of a towing mishap and shouldn’t be responsible for the wreck.

FLOOD EVACUEES SUFFERING ‘DEEP TRAUMA’ WINNIPEG (Canadian Press)

Months after their reserve flooded, evacuees from a Manitoba First Nation are still unable to return to their homes. The province says water is still more than two metres higher than normal in the remote aboriginal community of Lake St. Martin north of Lake Manitoba. Evacuees from the reserve are still staying in Winnipeg hotels and some students are only now attending school in two church basements. National Chief Shawn Atleo says the constant turmoil is taking a toll. He says kids are being lured by drugs, alcohol and gangs while elders are completely disconnected from their way of life.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has praised himself as Russia’s “most hardworking” leader since World War II. In his first lengthy interview since last month’s announcement that he will seek a third presidential term, the 59-year-old prime minister said that Communist-era leaders were not physically capable and did not have “the will” to run the country the way he did. After serving two presidential terms, Putin anointed a successor, Dmitry Medvedev, who appointed him prime minister and was widely seen as a No. 2 leader. Putin can run for two more consecutive terms and could stay in power until 2024.

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams and other delegates to a conference on the decades-old conflict in Spain’s Basque region yesterday urged the armed separatist group ETA to renounce violence. ETA declared a permanent ceasefire in January, but has not renounced armed struggle as a tool for achieving an independent Basque state. The group has killed 829 people in bombings and shootings since the late 1960s. It is classified as a terrorist organization by Spain, the European Union and the United States.

The speaker of Britain’s House of Commons says a pie attack on media mogul Rupert Murdoch at a parliamentary committee hearing could lead to permanent security changes. An activist launched a shaving foam pie at Murdoch, 80, inside the Houses of Parliament in July as Murdoch testified about Britain’s tabloid phone hacking scandal. Speaker John Bercow said yesterday the incident had exposed inadequate security arrangements. Visitors in the future may face new restrictions during high profile events, including restrictions on the type of items they can bring into Parliament.

Judges investigating the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese PM Rafik Hariri are considering whether to stage a trial in absentia for four Hezbollah members accused in the slaying. The suspects were indicted earlier this year, but Hezbollah has refused to arrest them and send them for trial at the UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s courtroom. Under the tribunal’s rules, judges can consider calling for a trial in absentia if the suspects are not arrested within 30 days of their names being advertised. Yesterday’s announcement comes a month after wanted posters for the four men were first displayed in Lebanon.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II designated a well known international judge as his prime minister yesterday, a royal palace statement said, replacing a premier who ran afoul of reformers. He was the deputy chief of the Hague-based International Court of Justice. He also served as a chief adviser to Abdullah’s late father, King Hussein. Al-Khasawneh has a reputation as a clean politician as well as a noted legal expert.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Associated Press)

Afghanistan’s president said yesterday he was asking NATO to provide an explanation of why three members of the family of a former Afghan senator were killed in an operation by international forces. NATO said two of the dead were women. Hamid Karzai’s office said two other members of Sameh Jan Sherzad’s family were also detained in the operation in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday in eastern Wardak province’s Chaki Wardak district. The statement said NATO must say what actionable intelligence it had that led to the raid on the former lawmaker’s family. NATO said it was aware of the statement Hamid Karzai from Karzai’s office and would “co-operate fully” with the government to “assess the incident.” The coalition said the incident occurred when a combined Afghan and NATO force was searching the area for a Haqqani network leader responsible for attacks on Afghan officials. The group is a Taliban and al-Qaidalinked movement that operates out of Pakistan. The statement from Karzai’s office did not provide a breakdown of who was killed or detained. But Karzai has repeatedly blasted the U.S.-led coalition for the so-called night raids, saying they often take place without co-ordination with Afghan officials and result in civilian casualties. NATO says these night raids always involve Afghan security forces.

Academics, legislators and former government officials are trying to do what diplomats have so far failed to: lay the foundation for lasting peace between North and South Korea, reunification of the two countries and, perhaps most importantly, nuclear disarmament. The University of Georgia was hosting a four-day summit that opened yesterday with a few dozen representatives from the two Koreas and the U.S. in attendance. The so-called Track II talks aimed to formulate policy recommendations for solving the standoff. The talks were unofficial, and representatives from the U.S. State Department and the respective foreign ministers were not participating in the closed-door sessions. A senior North Korean ruling party official was in attendance, however. Han S. Park, a University of Georgia professor who has ties with top officials in both Koreas and who organized the meeting, promised results. “It is outside of the government, but it is not scholarly lip-service,” Park said before the delegations broke for their meetings. Still, they have their work cut out for them to produce a consensus for moving forward by the time talks end Thursday.

Somewhere, an aging drummer (identity unknown) is probably still kicking himself. A newly discovered letter found folded in a book at a Liverpool yard sale has shed new light on the Beatles’ early days, revealing that Paul McCartney offered an audition to a mystery drummer in 1960, just a few days before the band left for a formative two-month gig in Hamburg, Germany. The letter, to be auctioned next month by Christie’s, has surprised Beatles scholars. It was written two years before the DRUMMER band bounced drummer Pete Best in favour of Ringo Starr, who arrived just SEARCH in time to help the Beatles’ conquer first England and then the world, earning untold millions along the way. The Aug. 12, 1960 letter handwritten by McCartney offers an audition to someone who had advertised their availability in the Liverpool Echo newspaper four days earlier. The unsigned ad said simply: “Drummer–Young–Free.” McCartney, who was then playing guitar in the band while the late Stuart Sutcliffe handled bass guitar, offered the drummer an audition with the caveat that if he joins the band he must be ready to travel almost immediately to Hamburg. The Beatles honed their musical chops playing at low-rent clubs in the ASSOCIATED PRESS German’s city’s famed red-light district. McCartney addressed the letter “Dear Sir,” assuming the drummer was a young man, as there were very few female drummers on the Liverpool rock scene at the time.

JACKSON DOCTOR TRIAL TO RESUME TOMORROW

LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

A judge delayed resumption of the trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson’s death until tomorrow to give defence attorneys time to analyze new testing that coroner’s officials recently conducted. Testimony had been cancelled yesterday so that the prosecution’s final witness, Dr. Steven Shafer, could deal with family affairs after his father died last week. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor agreed to delay the case against Dr. Conrad Murray for another day. Defence attorneys said they needed time to prepare for how to deal with testing the coroner’s office did last week. Tests were conducted concerning levels of lorazepam sedative present in Jackson’s system. Murray’s attorneys have suggested that authorities ignored the effects lorazapam may have had on the pop superstar and said their own testing suggested Jackson had taken eight pills before his death. Coroner’s officials determined Jackson died from a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol. Authorities contend Murray gave Jackson the fatal dose and other sedatives to help him sleep. Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Raine Maida and Our Lady Peace have offered their vocal support to the Occupy movement, despite “vicious” opposition from some of their fans. Maida attended Occupy Los Angeles while bandmates Jeremy Taggart and Steve Mazur attended rallies in Toronto and Detroit respectively. The movement spread to cities across Canada this weekend, inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protest. Demonstrators are speaking out against what they see as a system that favours the wealthy elite but disregards the masses, or “the 99 per cent.” Maida has used Twitter to voice his enthusiastic support for the movement, and he’s been surprised by the blowback. “I’m very surprised at how polarizing it’s been. In our heads, I think, it really affects everyone ... we’re talking about by far the majority of everyone we relate to,” Maida says. “To have our fans sending those vile email messages to us, it just means that people aren’t understanding (it) ... or they’re not getting the right information.”

MAN UP OFFERS VIEW OF MANHOOD TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Christopher Moynihan’s grandfather was a contractor who was wounded on a beach in Italy fighting in the Second World War, while his dad was a hard-boiled cop patrolling the Bronx in the 1960s. Moynihan himself writes and stars in TV sitcoms. And that contrast is part of what inspired Man Up, a new comedy premiering today that follows three ineffectual thirtysomething men who never managed to quite conquer adolescence. “I (live) a very different life than the guys before me,” the cordial Moynihan said over the line from Los Angeles yesterday, re-iterating how dramatically his lifestyle differs from that of his ancestors. “I’m an actor in my mid-30s ... and I was sitting in Baja Fresh talking about Spider-Man all day long with my friends, and going to auditions for Best Buy commercials and According to Jim.” “There are plenty of real men out there – they’re in Afghanistan fighting the war right now, they’re police officers and firemen, (they’re) rebuilding the World Trade Center ... Make no mistake,

they’re still out there, you’re just not going to see them on our show very often.” Instead, Moynihan’s show aims to mine laughs from a group of feckless friends who can’t keep command of their own lives – let alone a military battalion.

Christopher Moynihan stars in Man Up, premiering tonight.

Mather Zickel stars as Will Keen, a family man who makes no effort to challenge the authority of his far more competent wife. Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury) portrays his volatile, divorced brother-in-law – picture a hotheaded Jack Blacktype with a depressive streak – while Moynihan rounds out the trio as a lovesick sensitive guy still reeling from the dissolution of his last relationship. Henry Simmons plays a romantic adversary for Fogler’s character whose role grows with the series. The pilot episode revolves around a child’s birthday party, but the show’s hapless heroes manage to derail a wedding and instigate a lawn brawl before the half hour is up. While the episode ends on a sweet note, Moynihan says that such heartfelt finales might not be the norm as the show finds its footing. “It’s getting a little more silly – it’s more in the vein of those four guys out on adventures,” said Moynihan, who said that upcoming guest stars include Star Wars stalwart Billy Dee Williams and comic actor John Michael Higgins. “We have good moments ... but they’re peppered throughout a lot of ridiculous nonsense.” ADD YOUR

SUN LIFE; THIRD QUARTER LOSS OF $621 MILLION TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Sun Life Financial Inc. expects to lose $621 million in the latest quarter from volatile markets and other factors and could book another $500 million in losses in the current period if weak markets persist. Canada’s thirdbiggest insurer said yesterday it will lose $621 million in the quarter ended Sept. 30 – about $572 million of that from operations alone. The company cited “substantial declinesâ€? in equity markets, lower interest rates and the impact of an annual reďŹ nement of the company’s methods and assumptions for the red ink. Sun Life also announced yesterday that it plans to set up a reserve fund, starting with the fourth-quarter report, to cover estimated losses from its hedging activities. Sun Life employs about 16,000 people, including 7,000 in Canada, and has insurance, wealth management and mutual fund operations around the world.

Winnipeg Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec (31), Mark Stuart (5), and Zach Bogosian (4) celebrate a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg yesterday. The new Jets claimed their first win 2-1.

REBORN WINNIPEG JETS GET THEIR FIRST WIN tWINNIPEG (Canadian Press)

Ondrej Pavelec knew he hadn’t been playing his best for the Winnipeg Jets to start the season. The goaltender made up for it yesterday, stopping 28 shots as the reborn Jets defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 for their first regular-season victory. “I know, and everybody knows, I didn’t play well our first games so I was trying to help the team to get the win and keep them in the game,” Pavelec said. Pavelec had two of Winnipeg’s three losses this season, but he looked sharper yesterday against the Penguins, who were missing top forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. “It was a big game for us tonight against a great team,” Pavelec said. “They missed two of their best guys, but they still were a danger and they have a lot of guys who can score the goals. I’m happy we showed tonight we can beat those teams. That’s very important, but now we go on the road. It’s only one game so don’t be too excited.” Heading into the game, Winnipeg (1-3-0) was one of three winless NHL teams. The other two, the New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets, were idle yesterday.

Pavelec got a bit of breathing room early in the game when teammate Kyle Wellwood scored eight seconds after the opening faceoff in front of a roaring capacity crowd of 15,004 at MTS Centre. “That was exciting,” said Wellwood, adding it was the quickest goal he’s scored at any level of his career. “Certainly, to get a break like that early in the game and being able to capitalize is one that you’re really going to enjoy.” Wellwood’s goal tied former Thrasher Ron Petrovicky for the franchise’s fastest goal. Tanner Glass had Winnipeg’s other goal, while Alex Burmistrov picked up two assists. Zbynek Michalek had the only goal for Pittsburgh, which got 32 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury. Pittsburgh has lost two in a row and dropped to 3-2-2. “It was about being ready to start this game,” Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said. “(The Jets) brought exactly what we thought they would bring. It was an emotional building and they had a fast quick start for them. “We knew they wanted to come out and play that way and they certainly did and got the better of us.”

JETS BEAT WINLESS DOLPHINS 24-6 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Associated Press)

For a team in turmoil, this was one therapeutic win. It certainly wasn’t pretty or convincing. But it did the job for Rex Ryan and his feuding New York Jets. Darrelle Revis ran back the first of his two interceptions 100 yards for a touchdown and the Jets did just enough to beat the winless Miami Dolphins 24-6 yesterday night and end a three-game losing streak. Mark Sanchez threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes and ran for another score as the Jets – who called this a “must-win” game – capped a tough week by pulling out a victory and sending the Dolphins to their fifth straight loss. With the losses mounting and the season already on the brink of spinning out of control for the Jets (3-3), they traded wide receiver Derrick Mason to Houston and then had to deal with some infighting as Holmes called out the offensive line for not giving Sanchez enough time to throw deep. Right guard Brandon Moore fired back, saying those comments could have a “fragmenting effect” and were not what a captain, which Holmes is, should do. Ryan, who insisted his team’s Super Bowl hopes would not be undone by locker-room disharmony, even sent Holmes and Moore out as the captains for the pre-game coin toss. Turns out, this game against the Dolphins (0-5) came at just Darrelle Revis the right time as the Jets got their season back on track. Next up for New York: the San Diego Chargers (4-1) on Sunday, with a chance to head into the bye on a high note. Sanchez, who has also taken lots of criticism, finished 14 of 25 for 201 yards and the touchdown pass to Holmes, and Shonn Greene ran for 74 yards on 21 carries. Meanwhile, the Dolphins are 0-5 to start a season for the second time in five years, and things are looking an awful lot like 2007 – when Miami went 1-15. The heat on Dolphins coach Tony Sparano could intensify now, with some already calling for his job before this game. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall couldn’t even live up to his promise to get ejected sometime in the second quarter. He also said he might even start a fight with Jets linebacker Bart Scott or cornerback Antonio Cromartie. It was all talk. But that’s what many fans and media were wondering of the struggling Jets. The Jets opened with four straight three-and-outs for the second consecutive game before getting things going late in the first half. On third-and-9 from the Jets 20, Jeremy Kerley caught a 14-yard pass for New York’s initial first down of the game, with 6:17 left in the half. The Jets got three more first downs, including Holmes’ 20-yard reception that got the ball to the 11. Two plays later, LaDainian Tomlinson gained nine yards on a shovel pass. Sanchez, lined up in the shotgun, took two steps and then zipped forward and dived into the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown to give New York a 14-6 lead with 1:14 left in the opening half. Nick Folk kicked a 28-yard field goal to make it 17-6 with 4:15 left in the third quarter, capping a 13-play, 79-yard drive that took nearly half the period. Holmes’ 38-yard grab early in the fourth quarter sealed it for the Jets after Sanchez bought some time with his feet and found the receiver, who easily outran linebacker Cameron Wake and made a few nice moves on his way into the end zone to put New York up 24-6.

Formula One champions Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton hailed fellow Briton Dan Wheldon as a “true fighter” and an “inspirational” figure after the IndyCar driver was killed in a massive crash in Las Vegas. Button recalled Wheldon, who died Sunday at the age of 33, as being a star of the British karting circuit in

the 1990s before going on to win the Indianapolis 500 twice in the U.S. “I have so many good memories of racing with Dan in the early 90s, a true fighter,” Button said on Twitter. “We’ve lost a legend in our sport but also a great guy ... I can’t begin to imagine what his family are going through, and my thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.” Dan Wheldon Wheldon was born in Buckinghamshire. He was an inspiration to Hamilton after deciding to try his luck in the U.S. following a successful junior career that saw

him win eight British karting titles. “Dan was a racer I’d followed throughout my career, as I often followed in his footsteps as we climbed the motor sport ladder in the UK,” said Hamilton, Button’s teammate at McLaren. “He was an extremely talented driver. “As a British guy who not only went over to the States but who twice won the Indy 500, he was an inspirational guy, and someone that every racing driver looked up to with respect and admiration. This is a tragic loss at such a young age.”

ROADSHOW HAS FINALLY ARRIVED IN CHILLIWACK! By: Michael Ross Great Canadian Roadshow

fter two successful weeks in Williams Lake, the roadshow is headed to Chilliwack! So you better search through your attics and basements, go through your lock boxes and jewelry, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your antiques, collectibles, gold, and silver. During our show in Victoria, a woman came in with a jewelry box that she had just inherited from her late aunt. “I don’t wear jewelry,” explained Cheryl Barnes, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for jewelry she was never going to wear anyways. Expert Cliff Edwards explains, “We have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added, “The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewelry boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot! ”. At another Roadshow event, a woman walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her DV D \RXQJ FKLOG E\ KHU JUDQGIDWKHU 6KH ¿QDOO\ GHFLGHG to come in to the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some of which were extremely rare. Roadshow consultant Raymond Flack explains “We had uncovered an 1871 Queen Victoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She also had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”. All in all, Roadshow customer Linda Donaldson was able to cash in with $4,500! “I’m so happy, “Linda explains, “I never would have thought WKDW P\ ROG WLQ RI FRLQV ZDV ZRUWK VR PXFK , FDQ ¿QDOO\ afford to renovate my kitchen.” Raymond Flack continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value.”

Any generous donation given during the promotion period† to the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be matched dollar for dollar by the Great Canadian Roadshow up to a maximum of $50,000 received in donations. The Great Canadian Roadshow reserves the right to further match any or all donations exceeding the aforementioned amount of $50,000. †March 1, 2011 to February 28, 2012

Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures.

“I’m so happy,” Linda explains, “I never would have thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much I can ¿nally afford to renovate my kitchen.” Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox Cars. Lionel Trains and a variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectables, we can always make an offer to buy it. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, we will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!

SEE YOU AT THE ROADSHOW

MUSEUM SKEPTICAL OF NEW THEORY VAN GOGH DIDN’T COMMIT SUICIDE AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP)

‘MUBARAK’S SONS HAVE $340 MILLION IN SWISS ACCOUNTS’ CAIRO, Egypt (Associated Press)

The two sons of ousted President Hosni Mubarak have an estimated $340 million in Swiss bank accounts, a senior Egyptian Justice Ministry official said yesterday. Assem al-Gohary said Swiss authorities are investigating whether one of the sons, Alaa, was involved in money laundering along with other ex-regime figures. At home, Mubarak and his sons have been charged with corruption and all three are under arrest. Mubarak is also charged with complicity in the killing of about 850 protesters during the Jan. 25-Feb. 11 Egyptian uprising. Rumours circulated during the uprising that Mubarak and his sons amassed tens of billions of dollars in corrupt practices, helping drive the anger that brought him down. Switzerland has already frozen the assets of the Mubarak family and other ex-Egyptian regime figures, which alGohary estimated at nearly $450 million. He added that most of those assets belong to the sons. Egypt’s attorney general froze the assets of the former presidential family on Feb. 20, in the aftermath of the 18-day uprising that ousted Mubarak.

The Heat sustained their first loss, falling 3-2 to the Rockford IceHogs at home but salvaged a split of the twogame weekend series. The hosts peppered IceHogs goalie Alec Richards with 33 shots, while surrendering just 13 against – a franchise-low total for Rockford. “It was a good night in a lot of ways,” Heat head coach Troy Ward mused afterward. “I thought structurally we were good, I thought we did some nice things. But I didn’t feel a lot of emotion or passion with this particular 60 minutes.” Both of the IceHogs’ early goals felt a little bit like déjà vu. On each occasion, a Rockford player dug the puck out of the corner and fed it to a teammate near the right faceoff dot, who then ripped a high glove-side shot past Heat goalie Leland Irving. On the opening goal, it was Chris DiDomenico doing the spadework to get the puck to Jeremy Morin, who bulged the twine at the 12:34 mark. In the final minute of the frame, it was Jimmy Hayes with the set-up and Brandon Pirri pulling the trigger. Breaking down what happened to his team in those moments, Ward said: “We just looked like deer in the headlights. We just stood there. We didn’t move. “We didn’t react very well, and it was disappointing.” Other than those two breakdowns, the Heat owned the first period, but Richards was up to the task. His best sequence started with a Brendan

Mikkelson point shot – the IceHogs goalie stopped Lance Bouma’s deft deflection, then stoned Stefan Meyer on the rebound. Mikkelson finally got the Heat on the board at 4:18 of the second, ripping a point shot on the power play through a Greg Nemisz screen and past Richards. Early in the third period, the Heat had a golden chance to equalize, as Ben Walter was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway. It marked the second consecutive game the Heat had earned a penalty shot, but as with Lance Bouma’s attempt on Friday, Richards came up with a huge stop, turning aside Walter’s blocker-side wrist shot. “To see them in back-to-back games is pretty rare,” Richards noted later. “But I’ve got confidence one-on-one with a guy, and the pressure’s on him to try to beat me. It’s a tough play, but I made two saves, and it was a good thing for our team.” Walter got his revenge just over a minute later. Swooping into the Rockford zone, he unleashed a wrist shot that went off the stick of IceHogs forward Brett McLean and floated over the shoulder of Richards to knot the score 2-2. The Heat continued to press, but Rockford’s Brandon Segal struck for the game-winner against the run of play with 4:12 remaining. Brian Connelly lofted a high clearing attempt that landed in the skates of Abbotsford defenceman Clay Wilson just inside his own blue line, but he was

unable to corral the bouncing puck. McLean stole it, then dropped a pass to Segal, who weaved around Wilson and Mikkelson and ripped a shot just under the crossbar. “When you’re giving up the first two goals of a game, it’s tough,” Walter noted afterward. “At the same time, we’re 3-1, and we’re doing some good things out there. We’ve got some good players on this team, and once we get everything together, I think we’ll be a really good team in this league.” While they spent a lot of time in the Rockford zone and fired a lot of pucks at Richards, Quintin Laing felt his team should have made life more difficult for the goalie. “We weren’t hard enough in the tough areas,” Laing analyzed. “I don’t think we made it as tough as we should have on him. He came up with some saves, but a lot of those saves he should make. That’s what’s kind of frustrating about tonight.” Ward said the challenge for the keeper is staying mentally sharp during periods of inactivity. “If we do what we’re supposed to do defensively, this (13 shots against) is going to become pretty close to a regular,” the Heat bench boss asserted. “He’s not going to see a whole lot of shots. So it becomes more of a mental game for a goalie than it does a physical.” • The Heat (3-1-0-0) are back in action at home next weekend, when they host the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday and Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
