The stepmother of missing woman Marnie Frey combed Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside before dark tips about “Willie” and a wood chipper led her to the Pickton farm in Port Coquitlam years before police raided it. Lynn Frey told the Missing Women Inquiry yesterday she climbed a fence to get into the Pickton farm in search of clues to her drug-addicted daughter’s disappearance but turned back when two Rottweilers appeared on the other side. “I saw tractors, vehicles and big mounds of dirt and grass,” she said. “I didn’t see any bodies or anybody there.” Frey said it was the fall of 1998 – just over a year after 24-year-old Marnie vanished from the skid-row hotels she frequented. She said she zeroed in on the lair of serial killer Robert “Willie” Pickton after prostitutes predicted Marnie was dead and suggested a man at a farm with a chipper was responsible. She had made repeated trips to Vancouver from her home in Campbell River to search for Marnie. Others searching for missing women played her a tape recording of a man claiming to have information, Frey testified. “You’re never going to find these women,” she said the voice on the tape said. “They went with Willie and he’s got the chipper.” She relayed her suspicions to her foster daughter Joyce Lachance, who lived in Port Coquitlam, “She said ‘I know a guy by the name of Willie. He has pigs and he has a chipper on his farm. I can take you there blindfolded.’” They drove that night to the Pickton farm. Perched atop the fence, Frey was just a stone’s throw from the remains of her missing daughter – although confir-

The B.C. government’s out-ofcourt settlement to cancel a uranium mining claim in the Okanagan cost millions more because of political interference, NDP MLAs said in the legislature yesterday. The government announced its $30 million settlement with Vancouver-based Boss Power in a news release last week, at the same time as the federal government prepared to announce shipbuilding contracts in B.C. and Nova Scotia. NDP leader Adrian Dix demanded to know who intervened to stop the inspector of mines from considering a permit application from the company to begin work on a uranium deposit near Kelowna. A mining tenure was issued for the deposit under the Social Credit government in 1976. The touchy issue of nuclear power and uranium was reviewed in 1979, and an eventual moratorium lasted until 1997. In 2008, the B.C. Liberal government’s energy plan formally ruled out nuclear power and uranium mining, and when Boss Power applied for work permits, they were ignored. “It’s in the court documents that the deputy minister instructed the inspector of mines not to consider Boss Power’s application,” Dix told
the legislature. “It’s crystal clear that the inspector of mines sought advice from the government’s own lawyers, who told him the law required him to consider the application. Yet the inspector of mines was still instructed to ignore the application despite the fact his superiors knew this to be against the law.” Energy Minister Rich Coleman said the government’s refusal to allow uranium mining was made plain by legislation, and ministry staff would have been instructed
accordingly. The province negotiated compensation for Boss Power for mining rights granted and then taken away, he said. NDP energy critic John Horgan said the permit application was refused because any action on the uranium claim would have created a “political firestorm” for then-mines minister Kevin Krueger in the 2009 B.C. election. The government intervened “to protect the backside of the member from Kamloops South,” Horgan said.

Quick action by a witness likely saved the life of a man who doused himself with gasoline Friday night. The incident happened at the Wellington Pub in Nanaimo. Const. O’Brien said police do not know the reason the man doused himself in fuel, but his actions might have been triggered by a marital issue.
NORTH SURREY SHOOTING A GANG HIT: POLICE SURREY LEADER (Black Press)
A man is dead in what police are calling a targeted gangrelated hit on the weekend. At 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, a man wearing a balaclava ran up to a black Acura TL at 100 Avenue and King George Boulevard and shot the three people inside. Stephen Leone, 27 – who police say has links to the Dhak gang – was fatally shot and two others were injured, including a 15-year-old male. Manjinder Hairan, who police allege is also associated with the Dhak group – suffered minor injuries, as did the teen.

WOULD-BE THIEF LOCKS HIMSELF INSIDE CAR PRINCE GEORGE (Canadian Press)
A would-be car thief allegedly armed with an axe has learned a powerful lesson from a powerless car parked in a Prince George driveway. Brent Jameson Morgan, 20, now knows that the Corvette he tried to steal on Sunday afternoon becomes nothing more than a four-wheeled holding cell when the battery dies and common sense goes out the window. RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said yesterday that Morgan allegedly jumped into the idling Corvette just as the owner was putting away a charger used to revive the sports car’s dead battery. The owner watched in disbelief as the suspect rolled up the power windows, locked the power doors and promptly stalled the vehicle. “Unfortunately for the (suspect), he was not good
with a standard transmission and stalled the Corvette when he attempted to reverse out of the driveway,” Douglass said. The shocked owner wasn’t able to take any action because the man in his car was brandishing bear spray, Douglass said. With not enough juice in the battery to restart the car, the suspect was trapped inside the Corvette after failing to break the window with the victim’s anti-theft steering wheel lock and an axe in his backpack. As police arrived, Morgan was attempting to exit the vehicle after allegedly smashing the driver side window with his screw driver – apparently for no good reason. “As it turns out, all the suspect would have had to do was manually slide the door lock to the side and the door would have opened,” Douglass said.
Missing Courtenay girl Candice Shields is dead, Comox Valley RCMP reported yesterday. They continue to investigate, although they said foul play is not suspected. The Comox Valley RCMP, assisted by Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue and a helicopter, searched an area of Courtenay earlier in the day for the girl. She left her residence on Panorama Crescent in Courtenay on Sunday at approximately 4:30 p.m. P.M. and had not been seen or heard from since, RCMP said Monday morning.
14-YEAR-OLD RUN OVER BY TRUCK IN SURREY SURREY LEADER (Black Press)
A 14-year-old boy is lucky to be alive after being run over by a truck last week. On Friday at about 7 p.m., the boy was riding a pocket minibike northbound on 148 Street near 90 Avenue, when a jacked up truck pulled out in front of him. The lad hit the front driver side tire, bouncing off the rear driver side tire, and became pinned under the rear axel. Emergency responders were extremely concerned about the swelling and head trauma and chose to airlift him to B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Only about one of every six people convicted in marijuana grow-op cases goes to jail, says a newly released Justice Department study. The finding suggests the new minimum-sentence provisions in the Conservative government’s omnibus crime bill could dramatically increase the number of people behind bars for running grow-ops. Bill C-10, now before a House of Commons committee, would impose a minimum sentence of six months in jail for anyone growing between six and 200 marijuana plants.

Conflict of interest complaints against some Tory MPs could potentially scupper the Harper government’s plans to dismantle the Canadian Wheat Board. Both the NDP and Liberal parties have written the independent ethics watchdog, alleging that a number of Conservative MPs are involved in grain farming and therefore stand to personally benefit from elimination of the board’s monopoly. The opposition parties say those MPs should not be allowed to debate or vote on the measure.

Authorities say a nighttime storm tore part of the roof off Faro airport in Portugal’s southern Algarve region, injuring five people and causing flight disruption. Officials say roof panels over the check-in area of the departure terminal peeled off when the storm hit at around 5 a.m. yesterday. Local media said hundreds of passengers were stranded at the airport as authorities cancelled or delayed departures and diverted incoming planes. Reports said damage to the airport structure meant cafes and restaurants did not open, leaving waiting passengers without food or drink.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said yesterday that financial problems may lead to the closure of the notorious secret-spilling site at the end of this year. “If WikiLeaks does not find a way to remove this blockade we will simply not be able to continue by the turn of the new year,” he said. “If we don’t knock down the blockade we simply will not be able to continue.” WikiLeaks said in a statement yesterday that it would stop publishing for the moment in order to focus on making money – explaining that the blockade imposed by financial companies including Visa, MasterCard, Western Union and PayPal left Julian Assange it with no choice. U.S.-based financial companies pulled the plug on WikiLeaks shortly after it began publishing some 250,000 U.S. State Department cables last year. The group says the restrictions starved it of nearly all its revenue. The group has long shown signs of financial distress. In a recent statement about Assange’s contested book deal, the group said it did not have enough money to hire a lawyer. Assange remains under legal pressure in Europe and the United States. A decision on whether to extradite him to Sweden to face sex crime allegations is expected in the next few weeks.

ACCUSED IN SAUDI AMBASSADOR PLOT PLEADS NOT GUILTY
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
A U.S. citizen facing charges that he plotted to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States pleaded not guilty yesterday. Manssor Arbabsiar, who holds an Iranian passport, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in New York to a ďŹ ve-count indictment returned last week. Those charges were the same as those contained in an Oct. 11 criminal complaint. According to the complaint, Arbabsiar has admitted his role in a $1.5 million US plot to kill the ambassador at a restaurant by setting off explosives. U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration has accused agents of the Iranian government of being involved. The press attache at Iran’s mission to the United Nations has called the accusation baseless. U.S. authorities say they secretly recorded conversations between Arbabsiar and an informant with the Drug Enforcement Administration after Arbabsiar approached an informant in Mexico and asked his knowledge of explosives for a plot to blow up the Saudi embassy. They said Arbabsiar later offered $1.5 million for the death of the ambassador.

The latter are among a batch of potential Academy Awards contenders from past winners and nominees: Leonardo DiCaprio as the FBI boss in director Clint Eastwood’s J. The rush of holiday films starts early with the pre-Halloween release of Puss in Boots, an animated prequel about an early caper of the daring cat that became one of the ogre’s sidekicks in the Shrek movies. Antonio Banderas, who returns to provide the voice of Puss, said much of the character’s charm arises as the tiny cat struts and boasts with a bravado that’s out of whack with his size. “We just provided him with a voice that doesn’t go, actually, with the body,” said Banderas, who is joined by voice co-stars Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis,

7 U2 NAMED GREATEST ACT OF THE LAST 25 YEARS IN LONDON
LONDON (Associated Press)
Rock icons U2 have something new to brag about – winning Q Magazine’s Greatest Act of the Last 25 Years award. The annual music awards by Britain’s bestselling music monthly took place yesterday in London and the Irish quartet was among the music notables at the ceremony. The U.K.’s artist of the moment, singer/ songwriter Adele, won two awards, for Best Female and Best Track for her song Rolling in the Deep. She didn’t attend, since the event comes just two weeks after she was forced to cancel her U.S. tour due to throat problems. Coldplay was voted Best Act in the World Today, although lead singer Chris Martin disagreed with the accolade. “U2 are the best band in the world at the moment. We are about seventh,” he said. Noel Gallagher, one-half of the warring brothers who led the rock band Oasis to chart glory, was named a Q icon. But he said that award did not come close to rivaling his joy when Manchester City, smashed rival Manchester United 6-1 on Sunday. “No award can compare to that. That was the best day of my life, bar my children being born,” Gallagher said.

PETE SEEGER STILL SINGING FOR CHANGE
JANET JACKSON MOVES TOUR DATES TO ATTEND MJ TRIAL
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Janet Jackson is rescheduling part of her Australian tour so she can support her family during the trial of the doctor accused of involuntary manslaughter in her brother Michael’s death. Dr. Conrad Murray is on trial in Los Angeles. He is accused of being negligent in his care of the superstar, who died in 2009 of an overdose of the anesthetic propofol at age 50. The prosecution wrapped up its case yesterday, and the defence is about to present its case. The Jacksons have been a regular presence at the trial; Janet Jackson was there at the beginning. “When I planned these shows, the schedule in California was completely different,” she said in a statement on Sunday. “After talking with my family last night, I decided we must be together right now. ... This saddens me in so many ways.” The shows for her Number Ones tour were scheduled in Melbourne tomorrow, Thursday and Saturday; to make them up, she’ll perform one night, on Nov. 3, in Rod Laver Arena. She thanked her fans for their support and understanding.
Legend | Loretta Lynn is out of hospital and resting at home in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. after being treated for bacterial pneumonia.
Tao Rodriguez-Seeger was halfway through Friday night’s march down Broadway to support the Occupy Wall Street movement, a guitar strapped over his shoulder and his grandfather Pete Seeger at his side. Suddenly a police officer stepped from the crowd and grabbed his elbow. “Are you Tao Seeger?” the officer asked tersely. “Was this your idea? Did you think of this?” Rodriguez-Seeger was certain arrest was imminent. “He shook my hand and said, ‘Thank you, thank you. This is beautiful,’” Rodriguez-Seeger said. “That really did it for me. The cops recognized what we were about.” That moment affirmed the message that his grandfather has preached across nine decades. The causes and movements have changed from time to time over 75 years, but his message has always been the same: Song is the key to understanding and change. “Music does something to you,” Rodriguez-Seeger said. “It can cross rivers of meaning that entire books can’t get across. ... You take any one of Bob Dylan’s songs and you get to the heart of the mat-
ter where it took Homer volumes and volumes of books to get to the same point.” Today, Pete Seeger is approaching the far end of a life lived walking hand in hand with American history, often at odds with the government that runs things. It failed to shut him up. The courts

had no chance. Changing tastes and values? Never. This time around, Seeger was carried along by two canes. But his presence, in a crowd of nearly 1,000 with guitar players and sign-holders and police, gave the protest movement something it seemed to lack. A momentary clarity, longtime friend Guy Davis thinks. A purpose. A direction. Seeger’s voice first rose in the 1930s against Hitler. He met Woody Guthrie, Alan Lomax and Lead Belly, and began to advocate for migrant workers and miners in the 1940s. He stared down Sen. Joseph McCarthy and endured a blacklisting he shrugged away. In middle age, he was a key figure in the folk revival that produced Dylan and, later, the protests that helped shape modern America. Seeger still takes delight in lending his presence to things, even if his voice doesn’t carry like it used to. He found himself attracted to the studied inorganization of the Wall Street protesters. “Be wary of great leaders,” he said when asked what he identifies with in the Occupy Wall Street message. “Hope that there are many, many small leaders.” ADD YOUR

TO UPDATE GOOGLE MAPS TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Google is taking inspiration from Wikipedia and inviting Canadians to scan Google Maps in their hometowns and make improvements where needed. A new tool called Google Map Maker, which launched in Canada yesterday, allows users to add roads, rivers, trails and points of interest – such as stores and libraries – or make edits to get rid of incorrect or outdated information. Changes are vetted by a team at Google and fellow users before being seen by the world on Google Maps. “Google’s objective here is to create an accurate atlas of the world and the reality is that Google’s not big enough to do this (alone),” said Google Canada spokesman Aaron Brindle. “When it comes to our assumptions around who actually is in possession of the most relevant information to any user, I think it’s hubris to assume Google alone can do it without the help of the com-

munity of our users. “It’s a model that’s worked with Wikipedia and a model that’s worked astoundingly well when it comes to the maps (elsewhere in the world) that are already online.” Map Maker, a pet project of Google engineers in Bangalore, India, was first released in 2008 in a number of countries including Cyprus, Iceland and Pakistan. It was released earlier this year in the United States. Before the product launched in Canada, some Canadian Google employees were testing it out and making their own additions and edits. Among them was engineer James MacLean, who lives in Hawkestone, Ont., about an hour and a half north of Toronto. “In my little rural area here there were plenty of interesting things I was able to add to the map and a number of things I was able to correct,” MacLean said. Among his changes was an update to the local post office’s entry to reflect that it’s actually more of a general store that sells everything from groceries to alcohol to stamps.

NETFLIX LOSES 800,000 U.S. SUBSCRIBERS SAN FRANCISCO (Associated Press)
Netflix jolted its already shell-shocked shareholders with a third-quarter financial report that portrayed a company in crisis. Netflix’s blooper reel, released yesterday, included an even larger customer exodus than the company had foreseen after announcing an unpopular price increase in July. The company, which is based in Los Gatos, California, ended September with 23.8 million U.S. subscribers, down about 800,000 from June. None of the developments pleased Wall Street as Netflix lost more than a quarter of its value after the bad news came out. If that sharp decline holds in trading today, it will mark the first time Netflix’s stock price has fallen below $100 in nearly 14 months. Netflix shares shed $31.19, or more than 26 per cent, to $87.35 in Monday’s extended trading.
GOOGLE MAY JOIN LIST OF POTENTIAL YAHOO BIDDERS SAN FRANCISCO (Associated Press)
Yahoo shares rose about three per cent yesterday as investors reacted to the possibility that Google may help finance a takeover bid if its troubled Internet rival decides to sell. The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that Google has been in touch with two of the buyout firms that have been stalking Yahoo Inc. since Yahoo fired Carol Bartz as its CEO seven weeks ago. The story, based on an unidentified person familiar with the matter, said Google could provide some of the financing for a Yahoo takeover. The story did not say with which firms Google was talking. Yahoo’s shares rose 47 cents, or 2.9 per cent, to $16.61 in afternoon trading. Google shares rose $8.22 to $598.71.

RANGERS JUST A WIN AWAY FROM WORLD SERIES TITLE ARLINGTON, Texas (Associated Press)
Mike Napoli hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning against Marc Rzepczynski, and the Texas Rangers rallied from a two-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 last night and take a 3-2 World Series lead. Solo home runs by Mitch Moreland in the third and Adrian Beltre in the sixth off Chris Carpenter sparked the Texas comeback. Michael Young doubled off loser Octavio Dotel leading off the eighth. Darren Oliver got the win in relief of C.J. Wilson, and Neftali Feliz finished for his sixth save of the postseason, striking out Albert Pujols as part of a double play when Allen Craig was caught stealing second. Colby Lewis starts Game 6 for the Rangers on Wednesday in St. Louis, trying to wrap up their first title. Jaime Garcia starts for the Cardinals. After Young’s double, Beltre struck out and Nelson Cruz was intentionally walked. Dotel relieved Rzepczynski and David Murphy reached on an infield single to load the bases before Napoli doubled to deep right field, making it 4-2.
Pujols drew three intentional walks, including a pass with two outs and none on in the seventh. The St. Louis slugger then nearly used his legs to put his team ahead. Pujols was running hard on a 3-2 pitch that Matt Holliday hit for a single to left-centre. Pujols chugged around the bags and third base coach Jose Oquendo initially waved him home, only to put up a late stop sign. Would Pujols have been safe on shortstop Elvis Andrus’ wide throw to the plate? Maybe. But it became moot when Lance Berkman was intentionally walked to load the bases and David Freese flied out against Alexi Ogando. Beltre and Moreland hit solo home runs off Carpenter, helping Texas come back from an early 2-0 deficit. Beltre made it 2-2 with two outs in the sixth, dropping to one knee after following through on a meaty cut. He connected on a big curve from Carpenter, who had easily handled Josh Hamilton and Young to start the inning. Napoli almost gave Texas a cushion later in the inning. With the crowd standing and chanting his name as “NapOh-Lee” flashed on the scoreboard, the catcher’s bid for a three-run homer was caught on the warning track in right-centre field, just shy of the 407-foot mark.

B.C. WOMAN GOES TO BAT FOR UGANDA GARY AHUJA (Langley Times)
It was a story which hit home for Ruth Hoffman. Five years ago, with her twin sons on the Belgian baseball team which had advanced to the Little League World Series in the United States, the team nearly didn’t get the chance to attend. The squad was stuck at the airport, with planes grounded because of a terrorist threat. The situation was resolved and the team made it to the U.S. in time to play. “I can tell you that summer was and always will be the highlight of their youth,” Hoffman said. This past summer, a team of 11, 12 and 13-year-olds from Uganda won the right to represent the Middle East/ Africa division at the famed tournament in Williamsport, Pa. They were the first African team to qualify but just two weeks before the tournament in early August, the Ugandan request for visas was denied by the U.S. State Department. When Hoffman heard of the team’s plight through media stories, it brought back the memories of when their own team almost had to miss out. Hoffman, who moved to Vancouver a few years ago, is on a mission to send the Langley All-Stars, the Canadian national champions, to play the Ugandan team in Uganda this January. Langley was a natural fit, as it is the team Uganda was scheduled to face in the opening game in Williamsport. A total of $155,000 is needed, with $75,000 due by Dec. 31. Hoffman has put down a $3,500 deposit for airfare, with the balance due Dec. 5. The money raised will go towards sending the coaches, players and one parent each to Uganda. The rest of the money will go towards legacy projects such as education opportunities through scholarship programs for Ugandan players. Former Major League player Gregg Zaun, who is working on Sportsnet’s World Series broadcast, is an athlete ambassador for Right To Play. He aired a story on the initiative on Sunday during Game 4 of the Series. He also pledged $5,000 and Sportsnet has pledged another $10,000. For more information, go to www.righttoplay.com and click on the Canada-Uganda Challenge: Let Them Play!

PANTHERS STRETCH HABS’ WINLESS STREAK TO SIX MONTREAL (Canadian Press)
Scottie Upshall scored 5:02 into the third period last night as the Florida Panthers downed Montreal 2-1 to stretch the Canadiens’ winless run to six games. Upshall was in front of the net to tip a harmless looking point shot in off the post past backup goaltender Peter Budaj, who made his first start in goal for Montreal. Tomas Fleischmann also scored for Florida (5-3-0), which has won two in a row. Off-season signing Erik Cole scored his first goal for Montreal (1-5-2), who are 0-4-2 in their last six and who remain winless (0-3-2) at home.

APPLE POSTS VIDEO OF STEVE JOBS MEMORIAL SAN FRANCISCO (Associated Press)
Apple is allowing the general public to get a look at a heartfelt and star-studded memorial service it held for employees to celebrate the life of Steve Jobs at its Cupertino headquarters last week. Apple posted a link on its website late Sunday to a video of the service, which was held on Wednesday morning in an outdoor amphitheatre in the centre of the company’s campus. It runs 81 minutes and gives a rare glimpse of a company in mourning, showing several executives and board members reminiscing about their time with Jobs and speaking about the indelible mark he left on the technology world. Jobs was a tech visionary who started Apple in his parents’ Silicon Valley garage with friend Steve Wozniak in 1976. Both men left the company in 1985, Jobs after a clash with then-CEO John Sculley. JERUSALEM (Associated Press)
Israel’s foreign minister charged yesterday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is an “obstacleâ€? to peace and that he hopes Abbas will soon resign. The comments by Avigdor Lieberman drew an angry response from Palestinians, who appealed to the United States and the European Union to intervene. In a brieďŹ ng with reporters, Lieberman lashed out at the Palestinian leader, saying Abbas has been leading a campaign to delegitimize Israel internationally and that he has become an “obstacle that needs to be removed.â€? Abbas is leading a drive for UN recognition of a Palestinian state. Israel and the United States ďŹ ercely oppose the bid, saying independence can be reached only through negotiations. Peace talks have been largely frozen for more than two years. They broke down the last time over the issue of construction in Israeli settlements. In the past, Abbas has repeatedly threatened to resign if there is no progress in peace efforts. Lieberman called on him to carry out his threat. “He has been threatening to
U.K. TORY MPS VOTE FOR REFERENDUM ON LEAVING EU LONDON (Associated Press)
Prime Minister David Cameron pleaded with Conservative Party lawmakers yesterday to drop their support for a national referendum on Britain leaving the European Union, comparing the bloc and its economic crisis to a house on ďŹ re that needs everyone’s help. Some 60 legislators in Cameron’s Conservative Party have signed a motion calling for a referendum on whether Britain should remain in the EU, leave it, or renegotiate membership, but the government has ordered its lawmakers to vote against it or face disciplinary action. Cameron urged his party’s lawmakers not to vote for a referendum, saying the “timing is wrong,â€? given the European economic crisis. “When your neighbour’s house is on ďŹ re, your ďŹ rst impulse should be to help them to put out the ames – not least to stop the ames reaching your own house,â€? Cameron told the House of Commons. “This is not the time to argue about walking away, not just for their sakes, but for ours.â€? Monday’s vote, which was triggered by a 100,000signature public petition on the prime minister’s website, is nonbinding.

HEAT HOCKEY AS IT HAPPENS

point found its way into the cage through a crowd. On the very next shift, Beck jammed the puck under Irving on a goalmouth scramble. “Irv did what he could to keep us in the game for a long time, and we just got undisciplined there for a little bit,” Bouma observed. Goals have been tough to come by for the Heat, who have bulged the twine just 12 times in six games. Heat head coach Troy Ward gave the Admirals a lot of credit for his team’s offensive struggles on Saturday. “One of the biggest differences for them was, they blocked a lot of shots,” Ward said. “I thought we did some really good things in the offensive zone, but we struggled getting pucks through.” All six of the Heat’s games to this point in the season have come on weekends – a “college schedule,” Ward called it. He believes the long breaks between games has been a factor in his team’s slow offensive start. “It hasn’t been real conducive to getting into a flow,” he said. “When you’re a rhythm-type player like (Paul) Byron or (Dustin) Sylvester ... you need to play every other day. That’s when you’re at your best. “I’m looking forward to getting on the road and having us play every other day.” Saturday’s game marked the first game action in over a year for Raitis Ivanans, who was assigned to the Heat by the Calgary Flames on Thursday. The Latvian enforcer missed the vast majority of last season after suffering a concussion in a fight with Steve McIntyre of the Edmonton Oilers on opening night. Ivanans saw 4:43 of ice time skating on the fourth line with Gaelan Patterson and John Armstrong, and made his presence felt in the first period with a big hit on Milwaukee’s Jani Lajunen. “I’m just glad I can play hockey again,” he said. “It’s been a long road to get this first game in. It wasn’t easy, and no one wants to go through that.” Milwaukee improved to 4-0-0-1, while Abbotsford fell to 4-2-0-0.

The Milwaukee Admirals broke open a tightchecking defensive battle in the third period, exploding for a trio of goals in a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the Abbotsford Heat on Saturday evening. The Heat took a 1-0 lead into the final frame, but the visitors from Wisconsin leveled the score just 57 seconds into the period on a goal by Michael Latta. Later on, Milwaukee’s Victor Bartley and Taylor Beck struck 31 seconds apart to provide the margin of victory. “I think we were too soft in a lot of areas, and we didn’t play very smart all night long,” Heat winger Lance Bouma bluntly summarized. “It ended up costing us in the end.” The Heat and Admirals came into Saturday’s action as the AHL’s two stingiest defensive teams – Abbotsford having surrendered just eight goals over their first five games of the season, and Milwaukee giving up seven in four. Thus, it was no surprise that scoring chances were at a premium. The Heat broke the ice on a power play just past the midway point of the second period. Blueliner Clay Wilson wheeled into the offensive zone and got the puck to Greg Nemisz, who made a lovely crosscrease pass back to Wilson for a tap-in at the far side of the cage. It felt for a while like one goal might be enough on this night, with Leland Irving standing tall between the Heat pipes and neither team able to generate much offensively. But early in the third, the Admirals finally solved Irving. After the Heat failed to clear the zone, Kyle Wilson hopped off the bench and launched a wrist shot, which was deflected by Latta past the Abby keeper, who had no chance on the play. Then, with Heat defenceman T.J. Brodie in the box for interference, Bartley’s low blast from the right
