PLANE CRASH NEAR YVR INJURES 10 BHREANDAIN CLUGSTON and MARTIN VAN DEN HEMEL (Richmond Review)

A small twin-engine plane clipped a car as it crashed around 4:12 p.m in Richmond yesterday after earlier reporting trouble following take-off. The plane was headed for Kelowna from Vancouver International Airport, but turned around when it encountered a problem. Officials for the airport said the plane, a Beechcraft King Air 100, is operated by Northern Thunderbird Air, based in Prince George. According to the RCMP, there were seven passengers on Flight 204 as well as two crew. Alyssa Polinsky, a spokeswoman for Vancouver Coastal Health, said three people were rushed to Vancouver General Hospital in critical condition, while three more were stable. She said another three people were taken to the nearby Richmond General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A pedestrian was also sent to hospital after being struck by a flying object. The person’s condition was unknown. “We have everything from burns to fractures and back injuries,” Polinsky said. The plane crashed onto Russ Baker Way at Gilbert Drive, just metres short of the runway. The small plane was on fire after the crash, sending huge plumes of smoke into the air that were visible from miles away. Ambulances were on the scene in minutes. Bill Yearwood, with the Transportation Safety Board, said there are three investigators at the crash site. He said the plane experienced a problem, so one of its two pilots called in and it was cleared to return. The plane was about 60 kilometres northeast of the airport at the time, in the area of Golden Ears Provincial Park, north of Mission. “The aircraft fell short of the runway and crashlanded on the road,” he said in an interview.

Firefighters attend the scene of a plane crash in Richmond yesterday. A small plane operated by Northern Thunderbird Air broke into pieces as it crashed on approach to YVR. Steve Smith, from Richmond, was driving home from his daughter’s volleyball game when he saw black smoke rising from the crash site. “By the time I parked my car, there was a massive jam-up of cars. I saw people being tended to at the side of the road,” he said in an interview. Within moments he watched fire trucks scream

into the area, along with airport authority vehicles. He also spotted Good Samaritans helping the injured. “I was thinking, those guys are heroes for helping them out. You must go into auto-mode. You get a knot from your stomach thinking people are hurt,” he said. “It was a very heartening response.” – with files from Canadian Press

NDP WALKS FINE LINE ON PARLIAMENT SEATS FOR B.C. TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)

Federal NDP leadership candidate Brian Topp picked up more supporters on a visit to the B.C. legislature yesterday, and walked into a controversy over the allocation of six new MP seats for B.C. The federal government revealed its bill to add 30 House of Commons seats yesterday, including six each for B.C. and Alberta, 15 for Ontario and three for Quebec. Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Carole James, on hand to endorse Topp’s leadership bid, said based on population, B.C. should have nine more seats. Topp is running to lead a federal party now dominated by Quebec MPs, and he avoided taking a position. “The good news in the announcement today, if there’s any of it, is that we’re making progress,” Topp said. “Western Canada and Ontario should get more seats. And it’s the federal party’s job to look at the details and listen to the voices at speak up across the country, and to come to a judgment about what they think about the proposal.” B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix issued a statement calling the seat decision unfair, saying it unfairly

favours Alberta and Quebec at the expense of B.C. He said he will write to Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking that B.C. get more seats. B.C. Liberal MLA John Les accused Topp of supporting an increase that would keep the ratio of seats the same in Quebec and other provinces, as Western provinces have grown faster. Montreal MP Thomas Mulcair

also brought his leadership candidacy to B.C. this week, reflecting the province’s importance as the home of one third of party members. Topp, the federal party president, added six MLA endorsements yesterday. In addition to James, Vancouver Island MLAs Scott Fraser, Doug Routley, Bill Routley, John Horgan and Maurine Karagianis endorsed Topp.

Two men who police have said were part of a gang that had broken away from the Duhre Group pleaded guilty this week to drug charges. Aaron Somerville, 25, and his brother, Matthew, 26, were each charged with several drug possession and trafficking offences in October, November and December 2010. Most of those charges were stayed in Abbotsford provincial court on Tuesday, when Aaron pleaded guilty to one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking and Matthew pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in cocaine.

While firefighters are not animal specialists, the horse appeared to be fine, Dunlop said. Metchosin volunteer firefighters learned the bra technique only a few weeks ago after the department hosted a large animal rescue course. The firefighters who attended the Neild Road incident learned the technique at an earlier course in Duncan in June. The Metchosin fire department is currently compiling a large animal rescue kit that will include a 40 inch B-cup bra for horse related incidents.

A woman’s undergarment, wire cutters and quick thinking saved a panicking horse in Metchosin on Wednesday. Metchosin firefighters helped rescue a horse that became entangled in chicken wire, said Metchosin fire Chief Stephanie Dunlop. “The fencing was flimsy. The horse tried to jump over it and fell,” Dunlop said. “It got tangled up.” Fortunately the firefighters knew exactly what tool they’d need – a bra, which isn’t yet part of the firefighter’s rescue kit, but will be soon. A resident of the Neild Road home was able to supply one of hers. As the animal thrashed on the ground, the firefight-

A new coalition of health, academic and justice experts in B.C. says legalizing marijuana would reduce gang violence and convert criminal profits into new tax revenues for government. The group, called Stop the Violence BC, points to a poll that shows 87 per cent of B.C. residents believe gang violence is linked to criminal control of the pot trade. Group member Vince Cain, a retired RCMP Chief Superintendent, says organized crime is reaping billions from the illegal marijuana industry and using violence to maintain control.

Minister of state for democratic reform Tim Uppal says adding commons seats for B.C., Ontario, Alberta and Quebec will help even out levels of representation between the provinces.

FINAL COMMONS EXPANSION PLAN REVEALED BRAMPTON, Ont. (Canadian Press)

Canada’s fastest growing provinces will get more seats in the House of Commons, while Quebec will also be allocated more seats “to ensure it is not under-represented,” the federal government announced yesterday. The Conservative government will introduce legislation that will give 15 additional seats to Ontario, six more to British Columbia, six more to Alberta and three additional seats to Quebec.

The bill will bring faster-growing provinces closer to representation by population while maintaining the current levels of representation for smaller and slower-growing provinces, said Tim Uppal, minister of state for democratic reform. “It will address the representation gap by moving Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia closer to representation by population. Quebec will receive three new seats, which will be proportionate to its share of the population,” he said. “The legislation also fulfills our platform commitment to prevent Quebec from becoming under-represented relative to its population. “ Uppal made the announcement in the suburban Toronto riding of Brampton-West, the most populous electoral district in Canada with 170,420 people – more than five times the number in the Prince Edward Island-Charlottetown riding.

QUEBEC STARTS GUN REGISTRY FIGHT QUEBEC (Canadian Press)

In the first step of what could become a federal-provincial battle, the Quebec government has sent a letter asking Ottawa to let it keep the data from the soon-to-be-destroyed federal long-gun registry. The province’s political parties

are united on the subject, with Premier Jean Charest expressing the same opinion as his political opponents yesterday. The provincial legislature passed a unanimous motion asking Ottawa to keep the registry. Quebec says it’s asking politely for now – but it hasn’t ruled out the prospect of legal action if the Harper government turns it down. “We will use every means at our

disposal, which we deem useful, to let Quebec’s point of view be known,” Charest told reporters. The federal government says it can’t help, because the Privacy Act forbids collecting personal data for one purpose then transferring it to be used for another purpose. It also says it wants to erase the data to prevent future federal governments from ever reviving the registry.

SURVEILLANCE PLANS IRK PRIVACY WATCHDOG OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

The federal privacy watchdog says government plans to make electronic surveillance easier for police and spies must include stronger public protections. In a letter to the public safety minister, Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart warns against simply resurrecting a trio of previous federal bills to expand surveillance powers. Stoddart says the bills went far beyond modernizing search powers and would have ushered in significant new powers for investigators to track, search and seize digital information about individuals.

When asked about the video and his past remarks, Sweet’s only comment was that he said what he said.

TORIES DEMAND CBC PRODUCE INTERNAL FILES OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

The Conservatives want the CBC to turn over its internal files for a Commons committee to review, potentially including information on journalistic sources. Tory MPs on the Commons access committee say they should be able to take a look at documents the broadcaster refused to release under the Access to Information Act. The committee is currently studying the CBC’s record on access to information and its court fight with the information commissioner over documents it has withheld from release.

There is more fallout from a hockey hazing incident in Neepawa, Man. The junior player who complained about the incident is going to be traded and one of the team’s assistant coaches has resigned. MAN ACCUSED OF FLIGHT DISTURBANCE GETS BAIL WINNIPEG (Canadian Press)

A man accused of causing a disturbance on Tuesday during an Air Canada flight from Alberta to Toronto, which forced the plane to land in Winnipeg, has been released on bail. Byron Pinksen of Grande Prairie, Alta., appeared in a Winnipeg court where he was remanded to Nov. 28 and Nov. 30 on several federal and provincial charges. Police say a belligerent man who boarded the aircraft in Edmonton had a bottle of liquor that had not been bought on board and also attempted to light a cigarette.

Polish authorities say an investigation into World War II crimes committed at Auschwitz and other concentration camps has been reopened after it was initially closed 30 years ago due to the country’s isolation. The probe was launched in the 1960s and 1970s, but closed in the 1980s without any indictments being made as Poland had difficulty questioning witnesses and perpetrators living abroad as it was cut off behind the Iron Curtain. The Institute for National Remembrance said yesterday that it has already begun questioning witnesses as part of the revived investigation.

Residents living on the heavily inundated outskirts of Bangkok fled waterlogged homes yesterday as floodwaters inched closer to the heart of the threatened Thai capital. Most of the city remained dry and most of its more than 9 million residents were staying put to protect their homes. Still, uncertainty over Bangkok’s fate and the start of a government-declared five-day holiday fuelled an exodus of thousands of people fearing the worst who took to clogged highways and air terminals to get out of town. The floods have killed close to 400 people.

St. Paul’s Cathedral says it will reopen Friday, a week after is shut its doors because of an anti-capitalist protest camp outside. Spokeswoman Hannah Talbot says the church will open for prayer and worship with the Eucharist service at 12:30 p.m. It will reopen to tourists on Saturday. Protesters have been camped outside the building since Oct. 15. Days later, cathedral officials shut the building to the public, saying the campsite was a health and safety hazard. Church officials still want the protesters to leave, but they are refusing to go.

Sudan and Eritrea have inaugurated the first and only paved road that links the two nations, signalling an improvement in once-sour relations between the neighbouring countries. People wanting to cross the border previously had to take long and risky dirt roads. The newly paved road is 26 kilometres long. Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir, speaking at the inauguration, said he wished to see borders between the two nations removed altogether. The ceremony took place in Sudan’s eastern border city of Kasala.

Authorities say the moderate Islamist Ennahda party has won Tunisia’s first free elections, winning 90 of 217 seats in an assembly tasked with writing a new constitution for the fledgling democracy. Authorities said yesterday that the Congress for the Republic party, founded in 2001 by noted human rights activist Moncef Marzouki, had come second with 30 seats. The landmark voting took place Sunday. Tunisians overthrew their longtime dictator in January, a move that sparked similar movements in other Arab countries.

UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO LIFT LIBYA NO-FLY ZONE ON OCT. 31 UNITED NATIONS (Associated Press)

The UN Security Council voted unanimously yesterday to lift the no-fly zone over Libya on Oct. 31 and end military action to protect civilians, acting swiftly following the death of Moammar Gadhafi and the interim government’s declaration of the country’s liberation. The council authorized the actions on March 17 in response to an Arab League request to try to halt Moammar Gadhafi’s military, which was advancing against rebels and their civilian supporters. The NATO bombMark Lyall Grant ing campaign that followed was critical in helping the rebels oust Gadhafi from power in August. “This marks a really important milestone in the transition in Libya,” Britain’s UN Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said. “It marks the way from the military phase towards the formation of an inclusive government, the full participation of all sectors of society, and for the Libyan people to choose their own future.” The council adopted the resolution a day after Libya’s deputy UN Ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi said Libyans wanted their sovereignty restored but asked members to hold up action until the transitional government made a formal request, which he hoped would come by Oct. 31.

Metallica and the word “scaredâ€? don’t usually go together. But fear was one of the emotions that the band felt when they began work on their latest album, Lulu, a collaboration with Lou Reed. “That was scary, but it was also so exciting to think, ‘Is he going to tell us what to play? Are we going to know what to play? Is he going to start singing randomly? Should we ďŹ gure out some parts?’â€? lead singer James HetďŹ eld said. “We have had many different ways of recording, and this is yet another new way for us.â€? Reed and Metallica, both members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ďŹ rst performed together at the hall’s 25th-anniversary concerts in 2009. They found that they had amazing chemistry together. That chemistry prompted them to go into the studio together, but the concept for the album started as a work that was the brainchild of Reed, based on the Lulu plays (Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box) written by Frank Wedekind. “This was the template from God,â€? Reed explained in an interview with HetďŹ eld and Lars Ulrich. “It was written for a play in Berlin, for the Berlin Ensemble Theatre. It was done there as a soundscape surrounded by various electronics. I lifted the whole thing, since it is mine, and brought it over to them and turned them loose on it so that on top of the electronics, (it) became Metallica.â€?

Ulrich said most of the album was recorded in four days. “We had no idea what hit us, so it was a lot about just being in the moment and playing with each other and giving the impulsivity a chance to be the predominant thing instead of thinking, the Metallica drummer said. “It was a more physical experience than a mental experience.

Allen Gregory seems to have accomplished much: he claims to have composed operas, lobbied Congress, written novels and dated Chloe Sevigny. But his greatest challenge could be one most kids take in stride – when his parents fall on hard times, they send Allen Gregory to elementary school. Things do not go smoothly. “Anyone catch Charlie Rose the evening before last?â€? he asks classmates while pouring himself a glass of wine. It’s basically your classic ďŹ sh-out-ofwater tale, says Hill. Allen Gregory debuts Sunday on Global.

GOODWIN LIVING A FAIRY TALE

‘ANARCHY’ STAR OFTEN APPROACHED BY ACTUAL BIKERS

NEW YORK (Associated Press)

Once upon a time, a beautiful actress won the role of fairytale heroine Snow White in an enchanting new series. Not only that, but the actress scored a parallel role. She would also play schoolteacher Mary Margaret Blanchard, a present-day transformation of Snow White who, thanks to a curse by the Evil Queen, is trapped in the village of Storybrooke, Maine, with fellow fairy-tale folk – all of whom have forgotten their pasts as storybook characters and, now stranded in the artifice of real life, been denied every fairy-tale character’s birthright: the promise of a happy ending. The actress, of course, is Ginnifer Goodwin, whose series, Once Upon a Time, has emerged as one of the fall season’s biggest hits. It airs its second episode Sunday. Also starring on the show are Josh Dallas, Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle, Jared Gilmore and Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, a Boston bail bondswoman who is drawn into the mystery of Storybrooke (and who turns out to be Snow White’s long-lost daughter).

TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Kim Coates is so convincing on Sons of Anarchy that real-life bikers like to give him their opinion of the show. Case in point. Coates was at the gym a few years ago when an ex-biker club member got right in his face. “Listen man,” Coates recalls the guy saying, “I’m not gonna pull any punches.” Using colourful language, the biker went on to tell Coates that while he enjoyed his performance, he had problems with the show. The actor calmly stood his ground. “I said to him, ‘It’s a TV show. Based on some truths, based on Hamlet metaphorically, but it’s a TV show.’” Maybe it was the Hamlet reference that soothed the dude. Maybe it was Coates’ Harley out front. Whatever, Coates was able to make the case that he was “just trying to do a television show within the genre of the biker world.” Canadians who have not yet found the series on the Pay TV service Super Channel can catch up from the beginning when it premieres Tuesday night at 10 p.m. on FX Canada. The new Rogers-owned specialty channel launches Monday night.

More trouble | Lindsay Lohan’s estranged father was back in custody yesterday, hours after being released from jail on domestic violence charges.

Once has arrived alongside NBC’s Grimm, which, inspired by Grimm’s classic fairy tales, pits a homicide detective against mythological creatures living among humans in his Portland, Ore., hometown. It premieres tonight.

NEW HIT

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Ginnifer Goodwin plays Snow White and her modern-day alter ego in Once Upon a Time, which is filmed in the Lower Mainland.

“It seems strange to me that there have been a lot of joint reviews of the two shows,” says Goodwin. “The only thing I see we have in common is that we both draw from a certain expansive genre of literature.” She makes a good point. The whimsical abandon of Once is its own thing, recalling, if anything, other sui generis shows such as Pushing Daisies and Ugly Betty and, befitting its creators, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the myth-entangled Lost, on which they both were producers. “I was addicted to Lost! I’m an eekie-geekie fan of theirs!” says Goodwin, by way of explaining why she scarcely paused before joining their new project when she got the invitation. The 33-year-old Goodwin is best known as the youngest of three sister wives to Bill Paxton on the HBO polygamy drama Big Love, which concluded its run earlier this year. Her films include Mona Lisa Smile and Walk the Line. Now she has the dual challenges of playing one role that was created from scratch, Mary Margaret, and one role that everyone has known from infancy: Snow White.

AIR CANADA WANTS HELP WITH PILOT BARGAINING MONTREAL (Canadian Press)

Air Canada pilots have called on the airline to resume negotiations after the carrier ďŹ led ofďŹ cial notice of dispute with the federal government seeking the involvement of conciliators. The pilots had been scheduled to resume talks in the fall, but the Montreal-based carrier caught the employees off-guard by ďŹ ling the notice Wednesday. Air Canada’s move starts the clock ticking to a potential strike, even though the federal government has threatened to intervene with other employee groups at the airline. The conciliation process lasts up to 60 days unless extended. The parties have the right to strike or lockout 21 days after conciliation ends and must give 72 hours advance notice. Among the key issues is Air Canada’s desire to launch a low-cost carrier that it says will create jobs for 462 pilots, three times as many ight attendants and some airport and maintenance positions.

CANADIANS WORRIED ABOUT RETIREMENT CASH TORONTO (Canadian Press)

A newly released poll suggests that more than half of Canadians over the age of 45 are concerned that the sagging economy and volatile stock markets are squeezing their retirement savings. The poll by Sun Life Financial and the CARP seniors group, released yesterday, said 54 per cent of 5,500 CARP members surveyed were worried about the impact of economic turmoil on their ďŹ nancial security. And a third of respondents said they fear losing money in their retirement accounts from recent stock market losses. Since the summer, global markets have dropped over fears the Greek debt crisis could lead to a global recession. Some big pension funds have lost about ďŹ ve per cent of their value in the third quarter alone.

Leafs | Joffrey Lupul and Clarke MacArthur scored 4:22 apart in the 3rd as the Leafs spoiled the New York Rangers’ long-awaited return to a renovated Madison Square Garden with a 4-2 win last night.

TODAY’S BEST ATHLETES… ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Cardinals greet David Freese, right, at home plate after he hit a solo home run off a pitch by Texas Ranger Mark Lowe in the 11th inning last night in St. Louis.

CARDINALS FORCE GAME 7

I hit it pretty good, I thought (right fielder Nelson Cruz) was going to grab it, so just a lot of emotions on that one.” After banged-up Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer in the Texas 10th, St. Louis again tied it when Lance Berkman hit a two-out single on a 2-2 pitch from Scott Feldman. Busch Stadium was still in frenzy when Freese opened the 11th with a leadoff shot over the centre field wall off Mark Lowe. Freese thrust his arm in the air as he rounded first base, and the crowd was delirious. Texas had built a 7-4 lead in the seventh when Adrian Beltre and Nelson Cruz hit consecutive home runs off Lance Lynn, and Ian Kinsler added an RBI single off Octavio Dotel. Allen Craig’s second homer of the Series cut the gap in the eighth against Derek Holland. In the ninth, Albert Pujols doubled with one out off Feliz and Berkman walked on four pitches. Craig took a called third strike, and Freese fell behind in the count 1-2. He sliced an oppositefield drive, and when Cruz jumped, the crowd of 47,315 at Busch Stadium couldn’t tell at first whether he caught it. Feliz then retired Yadier Molina on a flyout to right, sending the game to extra innings. With Texas ahead 3-2 in the Series and one win from its first title, the Rangers also wasted 1-0, 3-2 and 4-3 leads. The two teams will play Game 7 tonight.

ST. LOUIS (Associated Press)

Twice down to their last strike, the St. Louis Cardinals kept rallying to win one of baseball’s greatest thrillers. David Freese completed a startling night of comebacks with a home run leading off the bottom of the 11th inning to beat Texas 10-9 last night, and suddenly fans all over got something they have waited forever to see: Game 7 in the World Series. “Man that was incredible,” Freese said. “But we fought back, we made some mistakes early on, but the way the Cardinals and we’ve all have been playing lately, you expect to come back like this. This is just a good feeling and I’m pumped were playing tomorrow. “Just an incredible feeling, seeing all my teammates at the dish waiting for me.” Freese, the hometown boy who made good, had already written himself into St. Louis lore in Game 6 with a two-strike, two-out, two-run triple in the ninth off Rangers closer Neftali Feliz that made it 7-all. “Initially I was like ‘Are you kidding me? My first AB off Feliz in this situation ever,”’ Freese said. “I just beared down, got a pitch to hit. Initially I thought

JETS SCORE WILD 9-8 WIN OVER FLYERS PHILADELPHIA (Associated Press)

Andrew Ladd scored the game-winner with 1:06 remaining on a one-timer from close range to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a wild 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers last night. Fifteen players scored in the wide-open game in which both clubs set season highs for goals scored and goals allowed, and the Jets tied a franchise record for goals in a game. Philadelphia’s Danny Briere and James van Riemsdyk were the only multiple goal scorers with two apiece. Kimmo Timonen had four assists and Scott Hartnell added a goal and assist. Claude Giroux and Max Talbot also scored for Flyers. Nik Antropov and Tanner Glass each had a goal and two assists for the Jets. Evander Kane and Alex Burmistrov each added a goal and an assist and Blake Wheeler had three assists for Winnipeg. The Flyers came within striking distance of the club mark for goals, and both teams were close to marks for goals allowed. The 17 goals matched a Philadelphia record for combined goals in a game. Incredibly, the teams combined for five goals in the first 4:31 of the third period. The most goals the Flyers ever have allowed in a game was 12 on Jan. 30, 1969, against Chicago. Philadelphia’s franchise record for goals in a game is 13. The Jets tied their mark for goals in a game set Nov. 12, 2005, at Carolina when they scored nine as the Atlanta Thrashers. The club mark for goals allowed in a game is 10, set Jan. 18, 2008 at Buffalo.

HABS OVERCOME OWN-GOAL IN 2-1 WIN OVER BOSTON BOSTON (Associated Press)

Tomas Plekanec put one in each net, making up for an own goal by scoring the tiebreaker with 9:14 remaining last night to give the Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins. It was the teams’ first meeting since a seven-game series in the first round of the playoffs that Boston won en route to its sixth Stanley Cup championship. All of the old animosity was still there, with Brad Marchand and P.K. Subban the latest to brawl in an Original Six rivalry that’s nearly a century old. Carey Price stopped 29 shots for Montreal, which entered the night tied for last with Boston in the Northeast Division. Tim Thomas made 33 saves for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who have lost three of their past four games. Plekanec stumbled in the first period, winning a faceoff at the left circle but knocking it past Price into the Montreal net; Patrice Bergeron lost the faceoff but was credited with the goal. Erik Cole tied it for Montreal in the second, and then the Canadiens took the lead when Plekanec’s shot was blocked by Marchand right back to Plekanec, who beat Thomas on the second attempt.

Politics | Former top-ranked tennis player Marat Safin says he is keeping busy in his retirement and even running for Russian parliament. at Lake Malaren Golf Club in the outskirts of Shanghai. He finished at 8-under 64. “If I can play as solid for the next three days as I did today, I feel as if I’ll be very difficult to beat,” he said. Mahan had seven birdies, including three in a row on the back nine, but he missed his final chance on the 18th hole when his putt just Rory McIlroy glanced off the lip of the cup. “You have to go out there and try to make as many birdies as you can. A lot of great players are here so you

can’t take your foot off the pedal, you’ve got to be aggressive,” Mahan said. “The course is set up well enough so that it’s not too long – (there are) good length holes. But it’s still challenging in a lot of areas so you have to be cautious on a few shots.” England’s Paul Casey and Ian Poulter and three-time major winner Padraig Harrington of Ireland were three shots behind McIlroy at 5-under 67. Anthony Kim of the United States and Li Chao of China were another stroke back at 4-under 68.

REAL-LIFE SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE WINS ON INDIAN GAME SHOW NEW DELHI (Associated Press)

BUDDHISTS, MUSLIMS, YORUBA JOIN POPE FOR PEACE PILGRIMAGE ASSISI, Italy (Associated Press)

Pope Benedict XVI joined Buddhist monks, Islamic scholars, Yoruba leaders and a handful of agnostics in making a communal call for peace yesterday, insisting that religion must never be used as a pretext for war or terrorism. Benedict welcomed some 300 leaders representing a rainbow of faiths to the hilltop Italian town of Assisi to commemorate the 25th anniversary of a daylong prayer for peace here called by Pope John Paul II in 1986 amid Cold War conflicts. While the event lacked the star power of 1986, when the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa and others came together to pray, Thursday’s peace meeting included some novelties that the original lacked. Buddhist monks from mainland China were on hand as were four people who profess no faith at all – part of Benedict’s efforts to reach out to agnostics and atheists who nevertheless are searching for truth. But unlike the 1986 event and successive ones in 1993 and 2002, there was no time given for any type of communal prayer. Benedict had objected to the 1986 event and didn’t attend because he disapproved of members of different faiths praying in the presence of one another.

Sushil Kumar’s staggering win on the popular Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire has transformed him into a role model for millions of aspiring youth yearning to escape from lives of poverty and find a role in India’s burgeoning economy. His win echoes the plot of the 2008 Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, whose impoverished protagonist won the grand prize on the show. Kumar and his wife of four months wept when Indian movie legend Amitabh Bachchan, the show’s host, handed them a check for 50 million rupees (just over $1 million) after the contestant gave all the right answers. “You have created history. Your grit and determination has made you come so far in this show,” Bachchan said. Before Kumar went on the program, which was taped Tuesday and will air next week, he earned $120 a month in the small town of Motihari in the eastern state of Bihar.

Kumar, the 26-year-old son of a farm labourer, told viewers his family was so poor they couldn’t afford a television set, forcing him to go to a neighbour’s home to watch the quiz show. Watching him tick off correct answer after correct answer, his neighbours persuaded him to try out for the show, he said. The trip to Mumbai, where the show is taped, was his first ride in a plane and his first visit to a big city.

Kumar said he will use some of the money to pay for a preparatory course so he can take India’s tough civil service exam, which could lead to a secure and prestigious lifetime job. He said he will also buy a new home for his wife, pay off his parents’ debts and give his four brothers startup cash so they can set up small businesses. And he plans to build a library in Motihari so the children of his village will have access to the books and knowledge he so desperately craved, he said.
