Dr. Conrad Murray listens as the jury returns with a guilty verdict in his involuntary manslaughter trial.

DOCTOR CONVICTED IN MJ’S DEATH LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

Michael Jackson’s doctor was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter after a trial that painted him as a reckless caregiver who administered a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic that killed the pop star. The verdict against Dr. Conrad Murray marked the latest chapter in one of pop culture’s most shocking tragedies – the death of the King of Pop on the eve of the singer’s heavily promoted comeback concerts.

INTRODUCING VEHICLES INSPECTED BY

Murray sat stone-faced and showed little reaction at the verdict. He was handcuffed and taken into custody without bail until sentencing on Nov. 29. The jury deliberated less than nine hours. The Houston cardiologist, 58, faces a sentence of up to four years in prison. Jackson died on June 25, 2009. Prosecutors portrayed Murray as an incompetent doctor who used the anesthetic propofol without adequate safeguards and whose neglect left Jackson abandoned as he lay dying. Murray told police from the outset that he gave Jackson propofol and other sedatives as the star struggled for sleep to prepare for his shows.

Victoria and Vancouver have begun making moves towards tearing down three-week-old Occupy camps manned by economic protesters. Protesters firmly rejected Victoria’s notice of removal yesterday, marching past a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald on their way to city hall where they hand-delivered a letter saying they would be staying put. Another protester climbed a huge Maple tree and perched himself on branches that overlook the mayor’s office. The city threatened prosecution against dozens of campers who have been living in pitched tents in and around Centennial Square since Oct. 15, the day numerous Occupy protests sprung up across Canada. “There’s somewhat a feeling of betrayal, if that’s not putting it too melodramatically at this point,” said Occupy Victoria spokeswoman Anushke Nagji, adding that city council passed a motion a week ago supporting the camp. Campers at Occupy Vancouver vowed to stay put after the city posted a notice yesterday asking that the encampment be immediately dismantled, citing an escalation of safety concerns. The city listed a death that occurred Saturday, a near-death due to drug overdose on Thursday, fire safety, injection drug use, the presence of pests and other hazards as its reasons.

Premier Christy Clark and senior B.C. cabinet ministers are seeing plenty of competition as they visit China this week in search of trade deals. Clark is taking part in B.C.’s largest-ever trade mission to Asia, trying to expand on B.C.’s recent success developing the lumber market in China. And whether the product is liquefied natural gas, lumber or tourism, there are many other countries doing the same. “Competition is stiff,” Clark said in a conference call yesterday from Shanghai. “The world is in turmoil, and everybody’s coming to China.” Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister Pat Bell is a veteran of these trade trips, most focused on using wood for housing construction. Bell says the forest CEOs on the trip are still expecting continued growth of Chinese demand each month, but nowhere near the doubling of sales that was seen over the last year. “There is significant lumber available over here already, and that’s presenting the softer market that we’re seeing,” Bell said. Deals announced after four days of the trade mission include an agreement for a touring show of

photos from B.C.’s gold rush town of Barkerville. The exhibit focuses on migrants from Guangdong province to Barkerville during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibit will be on display in Prince George before it opens at the Hong Kong Museum of History in early 2013. Its tour should attract more tourists from the Chinese province where most

immigrants have historically come to B.C. Bell said the biggest business deal announced on the trip so far is Sichuan Airlines starting three flights a week to Vancouver next year. It translates to 37,000 passenger seats a year, and is the airline’s first destination in North America. Clark is continuing on to India after the China portion of the trip.

B.C. MOUNTIE ALLEGES YEARS OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

CBC News is reporting that a prominent B.C. Mountie has filed an internal complaint with the RCMP alleging years of sexual harassment as well as misconduct inside the force. Const. Catherine Galliford, who served as a spokeswoman for the B.C. RCMP, alleges she suffered sexual advances from several senior officers as soon as she graduated from the RCMP Academy in 1991. Galliford says the RCMP has not responded to her complaint, but in a statement to CBC News, the RCMP said harassment of any kind is not tolerated.

MAN, 27, FACING CHARGES IN FATHER’S DEATH SEAN KOLENKO and TODD COYNE (North Shore Outlook)

The 27-year-old North Vancouver man charged with the murder of his father and the attempted murder of his mother did not make a scheduled court appearance yesterday because he was in hospital, according to the Crown prosecutor. Jordan Ramsay was due in court Monday morning to answer to one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder in connection to the Saturday morning attack involving his parents Donald and Wendy Ramsay at the family’s West 28th Street apartment. Lawyer for the Crown, Monte Ruttan, said the accused was in hospital with unknown injuries. The reading of the charges against Jordan has been

adjourned until a later date. North Vancouver Mounties received a call about a “domestic type dispute” at the Ramsay’s 500-block West 28th St. apartment at 1:39 a.m. Saturday. Once at the home, police found a man and woman suffering “from extensive injuries,” according to Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Paramedics pronounced Donald Ramsay dead at the scene. Wendy Ramsay remains in hospital in critical condition. Police said they arrested an “extremely combative and uncooperative” 27-yearold man inside in the residence upon their arrival. IHIT continues it’s investigation, aided by members of the North Vancouver Mounties and the RCMP’s Forensic Identification Section.

One of three people charged with the March 2009 slaying of two Langley residents has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 20 years. A publication ban on the evidence presented will remain in effect until the trial of two other people charged with the slaying of Laura Lynne Lamoureux, 36, on March 14, 2009, and the related murder of Marc Bontkes, 33, on March 19, 2009.

Floodwaters from Thailand’s flood-ravaged central heartland pushed farther into Bangkok yesterday, as residents of longsubmerged provinces north of the capital started to rebuild their lives. The water slowly advancing through Bangkok’s northern and western neighbourhoods is threatening the city’s subway system, two key industrial estates and the emergency headquarters set up to deal with the flooding that has claimed more than 500 lives nationwide. The flooding began in late July and some provinces to the north of Bangkok have been inundated for more than a month.

Pushed for space, a Spanish cemetery has begun placing stickers on thousands of burial sites whose leases are up as a warning to relatives or caretakers to pay up or face possible eviction. Jose Abadia, deputy urban planning manager for northern Zaragoza city said yesterday the city’s Torrero municipal graveyard had removed remains from some 420 crypts in recent months and removed them to a common burial ground. Torrero, like many Spanish cemeteries, no longer allows people to buy grave sites. It instead leases them out for periods of five or 49 years.

Thousands of people have sent more than $800,000 to Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei, some tossing cash folded into airplanes over his gate, to help him pay a tax bill they see as government harassment, he said yesterday. Nearly 20,000 people have sent money since he announced a week ago that the Beijing tax bureau was demanding that he pay 15 million yuan ($2.4 million) in back taxes and fines, Ai said. Ai, an internationally acclaimed conceptual artist, was detained for nearly three months earlier this year amid an overall crackdown on dissent.

A U.S. judge is blocking a federal requirement that would have begun forcing tobacco companies next year to put graphic images on their cigarette packages to show the dangers of smoking. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon ruled yesterday that it’s likely the cigarette makers will succeed in a lawsuit claiming the images violate free speech rights. He is stopping the requirement until the lawsuit is resolved, which could take years. The images include a pair of healthy lungs next to the diseased lungs of a smoker; a smoker’s stained teeth and a lip; and a dead smoker on an autopsy table.

The Pakistani military says it is training 8,000 additional people to protect the country’s nuclear arsenal. The U.S. fears Pakistan’s nuclear program could be vulnerable to penetration by Islamist militants. Those fears were heightened by a recent article in The Atlantic magazine that quoted unnamed officials as saying Pakistan transports nuclear weapons components around the country in delivery vans with little security to avoid detection – a claim denied by Islamabad. The military’s announcement that it is training 8,000 additional guards could be seen as a response to the article.

WASHINGTON (Associated Press)

The United States is increasingly worried by indications that Iran may be on the brink of developing a nuclear weapon, but the latest report on its atomic program from a UN watchdog is unlikely to sway the Obama administration from its plan to rely on sanctions and diplomatic pressure, not military threats, to deter Iranian ambitions. Ahead of the release this week of a new report on the Iranian program from the International Atomic Energy Agency, U.S. officials said yesterday the administration will use the report as leverage in making its case to other countries that sanctions against Iran should be expanded and tightened and that the enforcement of current sanctions be toughened. The officials said the option of using force, a topic of intense speculation in Israel, Europe and the United States in recent days, to prevent Iran from acquiring an atomic weapon will not be taken off the table. Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons. The report will suggest Iran made computer models of a nuclear warhead and includes satellite imagery of what the IAEA believes is a large steel container used for nuclear arms-related high explosives tests. One senior U.S. official familiar with the as-yet unreleased document called it “pretty compelling” and predicted it would stiffen the resolve of U.S. allies, particularly in Europe, to step up pressure on Iran to prove that its nuclear program is peaceful as it claims.

PARIS TRIAL OPENS FOR CARLOS THE JACKAL PARIS (Associated Press)

A deďŹ ant and smiling Carlos the Jackal, one of the most dreaded terror masterminds of the Cold War, went on trial again yesterday – this time over four deadly attacks in France nearly three decades ago. The 62-year-old Venezuelan, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, went before a special Paris court on terrorism-linked charges. He is already serving a life sentence handed down for a triple murder in 1975. Ramirez, who sowed fear across Western European and “He’s in a ďŹ ghting Middle Eastern capitals durmood as always.â€? ing the Cold War, is charged – Carlos the Jackal’s with instigating four attacks legal counsel and in 1982 and 1983 that killed 11 lady-friend, Isabelle people and injured more than Coutant-Peyre 140 others in France. He has denied any role in the attacks. The trial is expected to last six weeks, and if convicted, Ramirez could face a second life sentence – the top penalty in France, which does not have the death penalty. Wearing a blue jacket, greying beard and wavy hair brushed back, Ramirez smiled as he entered and then identiďŹ ed himself to the court as “a professional revolutionaryâ€? – striking a combative pose from the outset. “He’s in a ďŹ ghting mood as always,â€? Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, Ramirez’s lawyer and amorous partner, told reporters outside the courtroom before the trial began. She said there was “no reasonâ€? for the trial nearly 30 years after the events, and accused French

prosecutors of putting him on trial for “propaganda or some other interests rather than the ones of justice.â€? But Francis Szpiner, the lawyer for some civil parties to the case, countered that the trial was important to show that terrorists will always be pursued and to mark “the end of the culture of impunityâ€? for them. The trial centres on four bombings: Two against French trains, another at a Paris ofďŹ ce of an Arabiclanguage newspaper and yet another a French cultural centre in then-West Berlin. Ramirez is serving a life sentence for the 1975 murders of two French secret agents and an alleged informer.

A woman who said she sought help ďŹ nding a job from Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain went before television cameras yesterday to add her voice to anonymous sexual harassment allegations by three others, accusing the novice politician of reaching under her skirt for her genitals and pulling her head toward his crotch. Sharon Bialek said she had come forward about the incident in 1997 to provide “a face and a voiceâ€? to support other accusers who have so far remained anonymous in their charges against Cain, one of the Republican presidential frontrunners. “Come clean,â€? Bialek challenged Cain, demanding he confess to any inappropriate behaviour with her or other women. Cain’s campaign instantly issued a denial. “All allegations of harassment against Mr. Cain are false,â€? it said. As if to blunt any attacks on her client’s motives, the attorney described Bialek as a registered Republican, and a woman with a long and successful work history. The huge distraction is occurring less than two months before the ďŹ rst votes are cast in the process to nominate a challenger to Democratic President Barack Obama in 2012.

BIEBER VOWS TO TAKE PATERNITY TEST TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Justin Bieber will take a paternity test in an effort to disprove allegations he fathered a child in a backstage bathroom, a spokesman for the singer said yesterday. Matthew Hiltzik said the 17-year-old performer will take a paternity test when he returns to the U.S. within the next two weeks. A paternity suit was ďŹ led against Bieber last week by Mariah Yeater, who claims she had a brief sexual encounter with the star after one of his concerts last fall at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Yeater, who would have been 19 at the time of the alleged encounter, says she gave birth to a boy in July and believes Bieber – who would have been 16 – is the father. Hiltzik said Bieber’s team would pursue all legal avenues in the matter. “It’s sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims,â€? Hiltzik said in an emailed statement. Appearing on NBC’s Today show last week, Bieber denied the paternity allegations, calling them “crazyâ€? and adding that he’d never met Yeater. The 17-year-old performer, who was raised in Stratford, Ont., was in London yesterday to switch on the Christmas lights at the city’s two biggest shopping malls. Thousands of young and mostly female fans waited hours for Bieber to appear. Bieber travelled

the 20 kilometres between the malls by helicopter. He appeared in Belfast on Sunday night at the MTV Europe Awards, which were hosted by his girlfriend, Selena Gomez. Bieber picked up the award for best male act as well as best pop act. Yeater is asking a judge for child support and a paternity test. A hearing is scheduled for Dec. 15. Los Angeles police have said Yeater could be investigated for having sex with a minor. Under California law, it’s illegal to have sex with someone under age 18.

TORONTO (Torstar)

It’s been called the world’s biggest video game, and the latest version – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – has prompted so much hype that stores across the country stayed open late last night for the game’s midnight release. According to industry estimates, the highly anticipated single- and multi-player game is expected to become the fastestselling video game of all time. An early review from All About the Games gave MW3 a perfect score of 5/5. The reviewer said features include new maps, weapons, killstreaks and modes, and said the single-player mode was “a brilliant bombastic showcase of set-pieces and action. The game starts where Modern Warfare 2 left off, with special forces pursuing Vladimir Makarov, a Russian terrorist, in cities including London, Paris and New York. Andy Payne, a spokesman with a games industry trade body, said the game promises to not only be “one of the biggest game launches of all time but also one of the biggest entertainment products ever made, according to the Telegraph. Within 24 hours of its debut in November 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million copies, according to publisher Activision. By June of 2010, it had sold over 20 million.

LINDSAY LOHAN CHECKS IN, OUT OF JAIL LYNWOOD, Calif. (Associated Press)

Lindsay Lohan was released from a Los Angeles County jail early yesterday, less than ďŹ ve hours after she arrived at the crowded women’s lockup to serve a 30-day sentence for violating probation. The Mean Girls actress was booked into the Century Regional Detention facility in Lynwood at 8:48 p.m. Sunday, in what was expected to be a short stay because of jail overcrowding. She was released at 1:35 a.m., county sheriff ’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said. News crews staking out the jail said she left in a black Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle, and that she was in her Venice home by 2 a.m. Lohan did not get any favours, Whitmore said. “She’s treated like every other inmate who has gone through similar circumstances,â€? he said. Lohan had until Nov. 9 to report to the jail. It’s Lohan’s ďŹ fth jail sentence since being arrested twice for drunk driving in 2007. On Wednesday, a judge ordered jail time because Lohan recently

Famed ďŹ lm critic Roger Ebert is telling his readers that he may have to cancel his television show Ebert Presents: At the Movies unless someone steps up and helps him and his wife pay for it. The Pulitzer Prize-winning ďŹ lm critic wrote on his blog Sunday night that after an initial contribution of $25,000 from Kanbar Charitable Trust, he and Chaz Ebert have been paying virtually all the bills for the show, which began airing on public television in January. Ebert said he has been pleased with the program, which is hosted by Associated Press movie reviewer Christy Lemire and Mubi.com ďŹ lm critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky. But after months of paying for everything from screen tests to interns to lunch on taping days, “We can’t afford to support the show any longer,â€? wrote Ebert, who can no longer speak after cancer surgery. Ebert wrote that he had hoped foundations and others would step forward to underwrite the show, but that nobody has. And now, he wrote, American Public Television is asking him whether the show will be back next season, and he has to have an answer by the end of this month.

additional 270 days in jail. Lohan will have to serve 423 hours at the county morgue, where for nearly two weeks she has been mopping oors, cleaning bathrooms and washing dirty sheets. The sentence also requires Lohan to undergo psychotherapy sessions and appear monthly at court hearings between December and March. The judge also said Lohan can no longer leave the country and needs the permission of her new “no-nonsenseâ€? probation ofďŹ cer to travel outside California. Jail overcrowding has led to signiďŹ cantly shortened jail terms. In 2007, Lohan spent 84 minutes at the jail before being released, and in the past she has served about 20 per cent of her sentence, which is roughly six days. “The longer the sentence, the longer you stay in jail,â€? Whitmore said. “As pathetic as it sounds, this is not necessarily special treatment,â€? said Adam H. Braun, a defence attorney who was not involved in the case. “It just depends how full the jail is when someone surrenders. If it is ďŹ lled to capacity or nearly full, offenders like her are the ďŹ rst ones let go so more serious offenders can be held.â€?

TSX CLOSES HIGHER AS GOLD JUMPS BY $35 TORONTO (Canadian Press)

The Toronto stock market held onto its gains yesterday as the influential gold index led the way higher on the back of soaring bullion prices that ended the session at a sixweek closing high. The S&P/TSX composite index added 53.73 points to 12,461.98. Worries about the state of Italy’s finances drove the price of gold up $35 to $1,791.10 US an ounce. Oil added $1.26 to $95.52 US a barrel. Copper fell two cents to $3.54 US a pound. Italy’s borrowing rates spiked Monday to their highest levels since the country adopted the euro and there was speculation that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi may be forced to resign. The Canadian dollar turned around an earlier loss to add 0.39 of a cent to 98.75 cents US.

U.S. AGREES TO REVIEW KEYSTONE XL DECISION WASHINGTON (Associated Press)

The U.S. State Department’s chief investigator will review the Obama administration’s handling of a Canadian company’s request to pipe oil from Western Canada to Texas, following complaints from 13 Democratic lawmakers and one independent. Inspector General Harold W. Geisel said the special review will centre on whether the State Department followed all federal laws and regulations related to the $7 billion Keystone XL project. The 2,735-kilometre pipeline would carry oil derived from tar sands in Alberta, Canada, to refineries in Houston and Port Arthur, Texas. The pipeline would travel through five states before reaching Texas. ADD YOUR

Joe Frazier grimaces after Muhammad Ali, left, landed a blow to Frazier’s head during their famous 1975 Thrilla in Manilla boxing bout in the Philippines.

BOXER JOE FRAZIER DIES AT AGE 67 PHILADELPHIA (Associated Press)

Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champion who handed Muhammad Ali his first defeat yet had to live forever in his shadow, died Monday night after a brief final fight with liver cancer. He was 67. The family issued a release confirming the boxer’s death. Frazier, who took on Ali in three momentous fights in the 1970s – including the epic “Thrilla in Manilla” – had been under home hospice care after being diagnosed just weeks ago with the cancer that took his life, a family friend said. Until then, Frazier had been doing regular autograph appearances, including one in Las Vegas in September. Smokin’ Joe was a small yet ferocious fighter who smothered his opponents with punches, including a devastating left hook he used to end many of his fights early. It was the left hook that dropped Ali in the 15th round at Madison Square Garden in 1971 to seal a win in the so-called “Fight of the Century.” Though he beat Ali in that fight, Frazier lost the final two and for many years was bitter about the role

Ali forced him to play as his foil. Frazier was diagnosed last month with the disease, his personal and business manager said. Leslie Wolff, who has been Frazier’s manager for seven years, said the boxer had been in and out of the hospital since early October and receiving hospice treatment the last week. Frazier was the first man to beat Ali, knocking him down and taking a decision in the so-called Fight of the Century in 1971. Frazier was bitter for many years about the way Ali treated him then. More recently, he said he had forgiven Ali for repeatedly taunting him. While the “Fight of the Century” is celebrated in boxing lore, Ali and Frazier put on an even better show in their third fight, held in a sweltering arena in Manila as part of Ali’s world tour of fights in 1975. Nearly blinded by Ali’s punches, Frazier still wanted to go out for the 15th round of the fight but was held back by trainer Eddie Futch in a bout Ali would later say was the closest thing to death he could imagine. Frazier won the heavyweight title in 1970 by stopping Jimmy Ellis in the fifth round of their fight at Madison Square Garden. Frazier defended it successfully four times before George Foreman knocked him down six times in the first two rounds to take the title from him in 1973. Frazier would never be heavyweight champion again.

ALL-TIME BOXING GREAT

CROSBY MAY RETURN ON FRIDAY CANONSBURG, Pa. (Associated Press)

Sidney Crosby didn’t say no. He didn’t say yes, either. But the NHL’s sidelined superstar said yesterday he could return from his 10-month concussion layoff as early as this weekend. While the Penguins captain emphasized his status hasn’t changed – and there is 10 no target date for his long-anticipated MONTH return – he also said he isn’t ruling out LAYOFF any game on the upcoming schedule. Only a week ago, by contrast, he said there was no chance he would play last Thursday in San Jose or Saturday in Los Angeles. Pittsburgh is enjoying a five-day break before playing the Dallas Stars at home Friday and the Carolina Hurricanes on the road Saturday. “That’s a possibility,” Crosby said of returning Friday. “Just like however many games left there are (a possibility). ... I’d love it to be (Friday), but I would have loved it to be on the West Coast trip, too. There are a lot of different guesses but, like I said, everyone’s guesses are as good as mine.” There is guesswork involved because nobody seems to know for certain how much contact – or how little – Crosby must absorb during practice for his doctors to clear him to play for the first time since Jan. 5. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma also said nothing has changed. Crosby goes through all drills during practices with his teammates, then is evaluated periodically by those overseeing his recovery to see how he is progressing. While Crosby impresses almost daily while practising – his speed appears to be the same as it was before he was hurt – his contact has been limited. Despite an occasional bump from a Matt Cooke or a Kris Letang, it doesn’t begin to replicate the kind of full-speed, intense hitting that occurs during an NHL game.

BRUINS BEAT ISLES FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN BOSTON (Associated Press)

Nathan Horton had two goals and an assist, and Tuukka Rask stopped 24 shots to earn his first win of the season and lead the Boston Bruins to a 6-2 victory last night over the New York Islanders. The win pulled the defending Stanley Cup champions out of last place in the Eastern Conference. Evgeni Nabokov allowed three goals on 12 shots before he was pulled just 12:40 into the game. Al Montoya went the rest of the way and made 21 saves for the Islanders. New York pulled the goalie down 5-2 with 4:02 left, and David Krejci scored an empty-netter with 2:48 to play. Krejci had a goal and two assists in the game, giving him back-to-back three-point games after going scoreless in his previous six. The Bruins scored a pair of goals 29 seconds apart in the first period to make it 3-1, and then had another pair just 49 seconds apart in the third to take a 5-2 lead. It was the third straight strong offensive performance by Boston, which beat Ottawa 5-3 on Tuesday and Toronto 7-0 on Saturday night.

Makowsky, who holds the team record for number of games played, said there’s more than a few similarities between football and politics. Both require teamwork; both require leadership. And you need a bit of competitive edge, too. “Election Day is like a one-day season,” he said. “It’s like a Grey Cup – just one shot at it.” But even though his new boss is a devoted football fan, Makowsky isn’t expecting a cabinet seat. “I’m certainly going to have a learning curve here, but I’m certainly prepared to work on behalf of my constituents. “If there was a Ministry of Football, I might have a decent chance.”

I’m just enjoying this victory and we’ll take care of that in a little while.” Unlike Alberta, which has had two former Edmonton Eskimos quarterbacks as premier, Saskatchewan hasn’t had much of a tradition of players entering politics – even though provincial politicians drape themselves in the beloved Rider green every chance they get. Chris Szarka, a former Riders fullback once nicknamed the Canuck Truck, is one of the few examples after his election to Regina city council in 2009.

The eurozone wants to increase the firepower of the 440 billion euro European Financial Stability Facility to 1 trillion euros by allowing it to insure bond issues from shaky countries like Italy and Spain and by seeking investors from outside the eurozone.

SYRIAN TROOPS FIGHT DEFECTORS IN BESIEGED CITY BEIRUT (Associated Press)

Syrian troops stormed a defiant neighbourhood of the embattled city of Homs yesterday, kicking in doors and making arrests after nearly a week of violence pitting soldiers against army defectors and protesters demanding the downfall of President Bashar Assad, activists said. It was not immediately clear if government troops had regained control of the Baba Amr district, where the government is reportedly facing armed resistance from defectors who have taken refuge in the neighbourhood and in surrounding districts. More than 110 people have been reported killed in the past week in Homs, a city of about 800,000 that has turned into one of the main centres of protest and reprisal during the nearly 8-month-old revolt against President Bashar Assad. The violence comes despite claims by Syria that it is complying with an Arab League-sponsored plan to end the crackdown. Activists said two people were killed in the city and the surrounding province on Monday, pushing the death toll from the past 24 hours to at least 18.

Heat defenceman Joe Piskula boxes out Philippe Cornet of the OKC Barons on Saturday at the AESC as goalie Joni Ortio tries to cover up a rebound.

But the Barons battled back to even terms before the first period was over, thanks to goals from Philippe Cornet and Josh Green. In the middle frame, Green and Nemisz each notched their second of the game to round out the regulation-time scoring. Barons forward Linus Omark registered three assists, while Heat winger Krys Kolanos, with an assist on Walter’s goal, extended his point streak to five games since making his Heat debut last week. Ortio, making his first start of the season in place of workhorse Leland Irving, stopped 21 of 25 shots, while his OKC counterpart David LeNeveu turned aside 19 of 22. The Heat now embark on a seven-game road trip, their longest of the season, beginning Thursday against the Houston Aeros. All seven games are against West Division foes.

BRULE’S OVERTIME STRIKE LIFTS BARONS PAST HEAT ABBOTSFORD NEWS (Black Press)

Gilbert Brule’s power-play goal at 2:53 of overtime lifted the Oklahoma City Barons to a 4-3 victory over the Abbotsford Heat on Saturday evening. With Heat defenceman Chris Breen banished to the penalty box for holding the stick, Brule – a former member of the Vancouver Giants – one-timed a feed from Ryan Keller past Heat goalie Joni Ortio. Brule’s OT tally enabled the Barons (8-2-0-1) to sweep the two-game set with the Heat (7-4-1-0) at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. In the process, OKC leapfrogged Abbotsford for second place in the AHL’s West Division. The Heat had raced out to a 2-0 lead on Saturday, as Ben Walter and Greg Nemisz scored before the game was five minutes old.
