KOREAN WAR VETS’ STORIES GO ONLINE OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

Pilot Eric Smith remembers a head-on encounter with an enemy jet that flashed by his cockpit in an instant. Hub Gray tells of a heroic young lieutenant who ordered artillery to shell his own position to beat off a swarm of attackers. After 60 years, stories of heroism and horror from the Korean War are being retold for posterity. The Forgotten War is being remembered. A new project is recording the recollections of Canadian Korean War veterans for posting to an online audio-visual archive. It’s the brain child of the Historica-Dominion Institute, which earlier completed a similar memory project for Second World War vets. The institute’s Jeremy Diamond says the Korean conflict of 1950-53 was long overshadowed in the public mind by its far-larger predecessor. “This is really the Forgotten War,” he said. “This is a war that people don’t talk about nearly as much as they do the Second World War.” Canada sent about 26,000 people to the Korean War, far fewer than the 1.1 million Canadians who served in 1939-45. Diamond said the idea of a Korea archive arose during the Second World War memory project, when Korean War vets asked why nothing was being done for them. The institute was then financed by a federal grant, but the mandate didn’t cover Korea. A new, $1-million contribution from Canadian Heritage now supports the three-year Korean project. The idea is to record 516 stories, one for every Canadian fatality in Korea.

A B.C. judge has granted Vancouver officials permission to enforce fire codes at the Occupy protest.

JUDGE ORDERS OCCUPIERS TO OBEY FIRE CODES TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Occupy protesters were back in force in the courts yesterday defending their encampment in front of the city art gallery. B.C. Supreme Court Judge Anne MacKenzie said she will permit Occupy Vancouver to remain while lawyers for the group mount a defence against the

city’s push to permanently take down the tents. But she said firefighters and city staff have the court’s permission to enforce fire bylaws, backed by police support. A deadline of 7 p.m. Wednesday was set for removing all open flames, while certain tarps and unoccupied tents were ordered removed by 2 p.m. today. “It strikes a reasonable compromise between the need for health and safety interests to be satisfied and the need for freedom of expression,” said lawyer Jason Gratl, on behalf of the Occupy Vancouver protesters. Lawyers will return to court on Nov. 16 to argue the case for a permanent injunction to clear tents off the site. The judge noted it would be up to the city fire chief ’s discretion to allow any specific ceremonial First Nations’ fire at the site.

LestWe Forget Veteran talks about politics of war

Lest we forget.

'An idiot was trying to take over the world' Like many veterans, Wes Johnson doesn't share his stories about going off to fight in the Second World War. He'll tell you the years he was overseas — 1941 to '46, or thereabouts, he says. He'll tell you he was stationed in England, France, Belgium and Holland, and that there was "a lot of movement" in the first part of the war, and it settled near the end. "It wasn't like home," he says, laughing and tilting back in his chair just a little, in his Agassiz home. "We were moving at a pretty face pace (in the beginning). But at the end, not so much. The enemy was on the backup." But when it comes to recanting the times spent battling, it's not something he does freely. It's not all about the guns and fighting, he says. There is more to war, like politics. Johnson served Agassiz as mayor for 16 years, beginning in 1954. He had moved here in '47, with his wife Nina, when there were about 1,200 people in the town and a bustling ferry service. In total, he was involved in politics for 25 years. So, he willingly talks about the politics of war, and his personal view of Adolf Hitler. "I'm opposed to war but I think the Second World War, there were definite reasons for going," he says. "There was an idiot trying to take over the world." He sees a similarity between the world back then, and the current state of the world today. "I think when the general public has had enough, they're going to lash out against the establishment." Dictators are able to take control in areas where the people don't feel safe in the first place, he says. In Holland, for example, the people were starving. "They had no food," he said. And while he doesn't live the stories over and over — not even telling war stories to his children when they asked — he says the memories live on. "Everyone thinks it goes away," he says. And at first, it seems to.

"But later, it comes back." Both of his brothers served in the same war, and Johnson says he can still recall the exam he took to decide what rank he would be. "Anybody that had Grade 8 was made into a corporal," he says, chuckling. There's one more story Johnson will talk about. When he left to go overseas, along with all the other young "goofy" boys, he left behind Nina MacGregor. But when he came back years later, she was there waiting for him and they eventually were married. They had 60 years of marriage together, and when asked about how those years were he only has two words. "Too short." She's been gone for five years now, and while Johnson still manages to get around, he can see that he's starting to slow down. Up until a few years ago, he would always march in the Agassiz Remembrance Day Parade. "But my legs are all screwy now," he says. But he will be there today to remember.

The Cohen Inquiry is being urged to recommend the removal of ocean-based salmon farms from the B.C. coast – even if science has yet to prove the farms are to blame for the decline of Fraser River wild sockeye stocks. Gregory McDade, the lawyer acting for a coalition of groups opposing salmon farms, said in his final submission Monday it would be wrong to leave farms in the water while scientists study the risks to passing sockeye for another five to 10 years. “The real issue here is proof versus risk,” McDade told Justice Bruce Cohen, who is heading the probe of Fraser salmon returns. “The risk here is real. Don’t wait for 10 years until this is proven and we have no fish left.” The potential role of aquaculture has been the most acrimonious topic for the inquiry, which was named in 2009 to investigate the steep plunge in Fraser sockeye returns that year. But two researchers dispatched by the inquiry to investigate the impact of farmed salmon came back in September deeply divided on the severity of the threat. No smoking gun emerged that pointed to a single pathogen or

illness – or other potential cause – for the decline. “Which particular disease and when is not the issue,” McDade said. “We’re creating a dramatically changed environment every time we create a fish farm.” He disputed aquaculture industry claims farmed fish are generally healthy and said the year-round presence of large populations of farmed salmon in water where wild runs pass by is inher-

ently dangerous. Every other fish farming country has suffered devastating disease outbreaks, he said. Provincial government representatives said some scientists who appeared before the commission spoke beyond their areas of expertise, feeding what one expert witness termed “pure speculation” that farms are harming wild stocks. Cohen is to deliver his final report by June.

Thirty-four new deputy sheriffs have been sworn in to work in B.C. courtrooms. Attorney General Shirley Bond attended their graduation ceremony yesterday at the Justice Institute of B.C. in New Westminster. The recruits will have an array of duties including escorting prisoners between court, correctional centres and police lock-up facilities. Critics have said a shortage of judges and sheriffs have caused major delays in the justice system, resulting in court cases being tossed out.

NO REMEMBRANCE DAY AT SOME SCHOOLS MIRANDA GATHERCOLE (Langley Times)

Students at Walnut Grove Secondary are outraged that their Remembrance Day assembly has been cancelled. Jessica Olszewski, a Grade 12 student at Walnut Grove, said that despite having Remembrance Day assemblies in past years, her school is not organizing a major ceremony for students this year. “Everyone was pretty mad. Honestly it was jawdropping,” she said. “It’s insanely disrespectful.” Instead of an assembly, students will read pieces over the P.A. speaker followed by a moment of silence. Given the current teachers’ strike, Walnut Grove principal Jim Darby believes holding this type of ceremony is the best alternative for the school’s situation this year. “I didn’t want to put teachers in an awkward posi-

tion to have to make a decision, particularly when it is Remembrance Day. We didn’t want a political piece crowding what is a solemn occasion,” he said. The students are blaming the teachers’ strike for the cancellation, but the Langley Teachers Association says this is not the case. “We have not issued any directive to cancel Remembrance Day, in fact that’s the one assembly that’s mandated through the School Act,” said LTA president Gail Chaddock-Costello. Other secondary schools in Langley including D.W. Poppy, Aldergrove Community Secondary and Brookswood Secondary are having their regular assemblies to be attended by the whole school. Langley Secondary has opted to having a minute of silence.

Fraser Health will offer vitamin D supplements to all 7,500 residents at the region’s care homes in an effort to reduce the number and cost of bone fractures among the elderly. Although vitamin D is critical to healthy bones and muscles, it’s not standard in residential care facilities, where residents are less likely to get the nutrient through sunlight. Fraser Health officials estimate the vitamins will cost the region less than $20,000 a year, while the cost of treating one broken hip ranges from $18,000 to $30,000.

MUSSELS RECALLED OVER TOXIN CONCERNS VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

A B.C. distributor of raw mussels is recalling its product due to concerns about paralytic shellfish toxins. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the Sawmill Bay Mussels, distributed by Walcan Seafood of Heriot Bay, B.C., were sold Nov. 4 to 6 at Vancouver’s Daily Catch store. Paralytic shellfish toxins can accumulate naturally in shellfish but can cause poisoning. Symptoms include numbness in the hands, lips, feet and tongue and in severe cases, difficulty walking and even death. There have been no reported illness.

Mariela Castro opened a Twitter account and sent her first tweets Tuesday about her work as head of Cuba’s National Sex Education Center. She’s an advocate of gay rights. Dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez fired the first Twitter salvos, welcoming her to the social network and asking when Cubans “will be able to come out of other closets.” Castro shot back that Sanchez ought to study up, saying Sanchez’s version of tolerance reinforces “the old mechanisms of power.”

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says his country won’t retreat “an iota” from its nuclear program, and yesterday he strongly rejected a UN report claiming that Tehran is seeking to build atomic weapons. Ahmadinejad chided the UN International Atomic Energy Agency, saying it is discrediting itself by siding with “baseless” U.S. claims that Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Ahmadinejad made the comments on Wednesday in a speech addressing thousands of people in central Iran. The speech was broadcast live on state TV.

ENGINEERS TRYING TO NUDGE STUCK MARTIAN PROBE OUT OF EARTH’S ORBIT MOSCOW (Associated Press)

A Russian spacecraft on its way to Mars with 12 tons of toxic fuel is stuck circling the wrong planet: ours. And it could come crashing back to Earth in a couple weeks if engineers can’t coax it back on track. Space experts were hopeful yesterday that the space probe’s silent engines can be fired to send it off to Mars. The unmanned $170 million PhobosGround craft successfully got into orbit, propelled off the ground by a Zenit-2 booster rocket just after midnight Moscow time from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. After separating from its booster, 11 minutes later, it was supposed to fire its engines twice and head to Mars. Neither engine fired. So the spacecraft couldn’t leave Earth’s orbit, and that orbit is already deteriorating, according to American satellite tracking. The craft was aiming to get ground samples from Phobos, one of Mars’ two moons, and return them in a daring expedition hailed by eager scientists. The hope is that this is just a software problem that can be fixed and uploaded to the probe, said Bruce Betts, program director of the Planetary Society in the United States, a group that has a $500,000 experiment on board. “There’s a major problem, but it might be recoverable,” Betts said. “The game’s not over yet.”

The latest Republican debate was expected to focus on Herman Cain, the presidential hopeful currently embroiled in a lewd sexual harassment scandal. But Texas Gov. Rick Perry unwittingly stole the spotlight from his rival with a potentially fatal verbal fumble that he punctuated with a feeble “oops. In the CNBC economic debate in Michigan, Perry was asked about his tax and spending plan and proceeded to falter painfully, unable to list the three federal agencies he’s proposing to abolish. “And I will tell you, it is three agencies of government when I get there that are gone, he said. “Commerce, education, and the – what’s the third one there? He said no, but admitted he could not name the third agency. “The third one, I can’t. Sorry. There were almost immediate reports of Perry fundraisers declaring his campaign dead in the water.

IMF SAYS GLOBAL ECONOMY RISKS ‘LOST DECADE’ BEIJING (Associated Press)

The head of the International Monetary Fund warned yesterday the global economy faces the risk of a “lost decadeâ€? of little or no growth and Asia should be on guard to deal with a downturn. Without bold, co-ordinated action, the world might face worsening ďŹ nancial instability and a possible collapse of demand, said Christine Lagarde, on her ďŹ rst visit to Beijing since becoming IMF managing director in July. “Ultimately, we could run the risk of what some commentators are already calling a lost decade,â€? she told reporters. Asian economies are relatively strong but need to

be “prepared for any storm,â€? said the former French ďŹ nance minister. She said Asian governments that have tightened monetary policy to ďŹ ght ination should “pause a little bit.â€? “Asia is not immune. Let’s make no mistake,â€? Lagarde said. Last month, the Washington-based IMF trimmed its forecast for Asia’s growth this year to an average of 6.3 per cent from its previous outlook of 7 per cent, citing Europe’s debt crisis and a possible U.S. slowdown. After a strong start to the year, Asian growth slowed because of sluggish demand from advanced economies and Japan’s March tsunami, which disrupted industrial production and exports across the region.

Eddie Murphy has bowed out of his gig as host of the Academy Awards, following pal Brett Ratner’s decision to leave the show as producer because of an uproar over a gay slur. The news of Murphy’s departure came yesterday, a day after Ratner quit as producer of the Feb. 26 show. Ratner left amid criticism of his use of a pejorative term for gay men at a screening of Tower Heist. Murphy’s exit deprives organizers of a top star for a job that’s tough to ďŹ ll, since some past GRACIOUS hosts have found little to gain from the gig and FAREWELL plenty to lose if they do a poor job as emcee of Hollywood’s biggest party. “I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony,â€? Murphy said in a news release from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.â€? Academy President Tom Sherak bid Murphy farewell graciously: “I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well.â€? Still, losing Murphy is a blow to a ceremony that has struggled to pep up its image amid a general decline in ASSOCIATED PRESS its TV ratings over the last couple of decades. Eddie Murphy is out as next year’s Oscar host after Planners have sought to shorten the sometimes producer Brett Ratner dropped out this week.

They also have experimented with unexpected choices as hosts, which worked nicely with the song-and-dance talents of Hugh Jackman three years ago but backďŹ red at last season’s show, when Anne Hathaway was paired with lacklustre co-host James Franco. When the academy picked Murphy in September, it marked a return to the traditional funnyman as host, a formula that delivered some of the best-remembered Oscar pageants when Bob Hope, Johnny Carson and Billy Crystal ran the show.

7 MORGAN FREEMAN WINS GOLDEN GLOBE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman is taking home a new prize – a lifetime-achievement honour at the Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced yesterday that Freeman will receive the group’s Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 69th annual Globes ceremony on Jan. 15. The 74-year-old Freeman is a ďŹ ve-time Oscar nominee who won the supportingactor prize for 2004’s Million Dollar Baby. Freeman’s Oscar nominations include best actor for 1989’s Driving Miss Daisy, for which he won a Golden Globe. His big successes early on came in theatre, which brought him a Tony Award nomination for 1978’s The Mighty Gents, and television, where he was a regular for six years on The Electric Company. Freeman’s big-screen career took off with 1987’s crime drama Street Smart, which earned him his ďŹ rst Oscar nomination. Among his credits since then are Glory, Unforgiven, The Shawshank Redemption and the current Batman franchise, including next summer’s The Dark Knight Rises.

MJ’S DEATH HOUSE, DEATH POSESSIONS UP FOR AUCTION LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

The bed where Michael Jackson took his last breath is up for sale. The queen-size piece is among hundreds of items from the Holmby Hills mansion where Jackson spent his final days that are set to hit the auction block next month. “We want to preserve the history of these items,” said celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien, president of Julien’s Auctions, which will sell the various antique furnishings, paintings and sculptures that surrounded the King of Pop as he prepared for a series of comeback concerts. The North Carolwood Drive home where Jackson lived with his three children from December 2008 until his death on June 25, 2009, is separately up for sale. The house and its furnishings were leased to Jackson while he and his family lived there. A note from one of the children remains on a chalkboard inside the home’s kitchen, where three barstools were lined up against the centre island – a perfect breakfast spot. “I (heart) Daddy. SMILE, it’s for free,” the chalk note reads in childlike scrawl. The chalkboard will be sold as-is, and is expected to fetch more than $400.

SUTHERLAND, DUNST ENJOYED WORKING WITH LARS VON TRIER TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Kiefer Sutherland sheepishly admits he wasn’t all that familiar with the work of controversial Danish director Lars von Trier before signing on for a supporting role in his new film Melancholia. But after doing a little catching up on the auteur’s films, he jumped at the chance to work with him. “I’ll put films into three categories: there are movies that are really fun to see; there are films that are a little more highbrow; and then there’s cinema, and there are very few cinema directors around,” the Canadian actor. “My father (Donald) had the great privilege of working with Federico Fellini and Bernardo Bertolucci and I had the great privilege of working with Lars von Trier.” It’s a common refrain from the actors starring in the new doomsday film, which opens tomorrow in Toronto and Nov. 18 in Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Vancouver and Victoria. Told in two parts, it’s a movie

about depression and follows several characters as they come to grips with the threat of a cataclysmic collision between the Earth and a planet called Melancholia. Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte

CANADIAN PRESS

Kiefer Sutherland says director Lars von Trier doesn’t make mere movies, he makes cinema.

Gainsbourg play sisters with clashing personalities. Claire (Gainsbourg) has eagerly organized a lavish wedding reception for her sister Justine (Dunst), who is set to marry Michael (Alexander Skarsgard). At first, Justine seems as happy as any other blushing bride but her smiling veneer gradually chips away as her sadness envelopes her. Sutherland plays Claire’s nononsense husband, who has little patience for the eccentricities of his wife’s family and is obsessed by Melancholia. Despite von Trier’s reputation for being a tyrant on set – Bjork and Nicole Kidman were public about their suffering under his direction while shooting Dancer in the Dark and Dogville – Dunst said she didn’t hesitate to work with the director. “No, not at all, I don’t know why, it was exciting to me,” Dunst said. “Immediately when I knew it was a Lars von Trier film I would’ve done it before even reading the script, probably. To me, I think he’s one of the great auteurs of our time.” ADD YOUR

ITALIAN DEBT WORRIES SEND STOCKS TUMBLING TORONTO (Canadian Press)

The Toronto stock market tumbled more than 300 points amid a fresh wave of anxiety about Europe’s debt crisis. The S&P/TSX composite index fell 332.64 points to 12,156.22 as traders worried that Italy’s borrowing costs are becoming too large to handle while talks aimed at establishing a new government in Greece disintegrated. A ight to the perceived safety of the U.S. greenback pushed the Canadian dollar down 1.31 cents to 98.88 cents US. U.S. markets tumbled as the Dow Jones industrials slid 389.24 points to 11,780.94 and the Nasdaq composite index dropped 105.84 points to 2,621.65. The S&P 500 index fell 46.82 points to 1,229.1 as the yield on Italy’s 10-year bonds moved well over seven per cent during the day, a level considered unsustainable. Markets lack conďŹ dence that the Italian government will pass tough austerity measures needed to cope with the country’s huge debt.

ADOBE BACKS OFF FLASH FOR MOBILE BROWSERS NEW YORK (Associated Press)

Adobe says it will pull Flash, its software for Web video and software, from the Web browsers of mobile devices. Flash will still work on mobile apps and on computer Web browsers. It’s a win for Apple, which has famously banned Flash from working on the iPhone and the iPad. Adobe Systems, though, says the about-face is about listening to what customers want. In a blog post yesterday, Adobe vice-president Danny Winokur said that the company will increase investment in HTML5. That’s the latest version of the programming standard that websites are built on. It was less than two months ago that Winokur said that Adobe was equally focused on both Flash and HTML5.

PENN STATE FIRES FOOTBALL COACH JOE PATERNO STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Associated Press)

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach. The massive shakeup last night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season. But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore. Speaking at his house to a couple of dozen students, Paterno said, “Right now, I’m not the football coach. And I’ve got to get used to that. After 61 years, I’ve got to get used to it. I appreciate it. Let me think it through.” He shook hands with many of the students, some of whom were crying. Other students were upset. A large crowd descended on the administration building, shouting “We want Joe back!” then headed to Beaver Stadium. One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn’t go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower. Paterno says he should have done more. Spanier has said he was not told the details of the attack. Sandusky has denied the charges.

Defensive co-ordinator Tom Bradley will serve as interim coach while Rodney Erickson will be the interim school president. Earlier in the day, Paterno said in a statement he was “absolutely devastated” by the case, in which Sandusky, his one-time heir apparent was charged with molesting eight boys in 15 years, with some of the alleged abuse taking place at the Penn State football complex. “This is a tragedy,” Paterno said. “It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.” The ouster of the man affectionately known as “JoePa” brings to an end one of the most storied coaching careers – not just in college football but in all of sports. Paterno has 409 victories – a record for major college football – won two national titles and guided five teams to unbeaten, untied seasons. He reached 300 wins faster than any other coach. After meeting Tuesday, Penn State’s board of trustees said it would appoint a committee to investigate the “circumstances” that resulted in the indictment of Sandusky, and of athletic director Tim Curley and a vice-president Gary Schultz, who are accused in an alleged coverup. Paterno notified Curley and Schultz about the 2002 abuse charge and is not a target of the criminal investigation. Curley and Schultz have been charged with failing to report the incident to the authorities.

RANGERS BEAT OTTAWA FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

Marian Gaborik scored twice including the game winner as the New York Rangers defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-2 last night. Gaborik elected to shoot during a twoon-one with teammate Derek Stepan and beat Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson short side to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead in the third period. Nick Foligno beat Henrik Lundqvist just over a minute later to cut New York’s lead to one, but the Senators were unable to tie the game. Stepan had a goal and two assists for the Rangers (8-3-3) while Artem Anisimov picked up two assists. Milan Michalek had the other goal for the Senators (7-8-1), who have now dropped four straight following a six-game winning streak. Anderson only faced 19 shots while his teammates fired 31 at Lundqvist. The Senators didn’t do themselves any favours in the second period after they took a 1-0 lead on Michalek’s goal when two breakdowns led to two Rangers’ goals in short order. On the first, Gaborik was left unguarded and he had an easy tap into an empty net at 9:21 following a cross-ice pass from Stepan. Just 42 seconds later the Senators’ defence was once again absent as the puck lay in the crease by the feet of Anderson who was on his back. Stepan capitalized by skating around the net and scoring into an empty net.

NBA, PLAYERS UNION HOLD MARATHON BARGAINING TALKS NEW YORK (Associated Press)

NBA owners and players were engaged in another marathon negotiation session last night, meeting for more than 11 hours in an attempt to end the lockout. Talks were still going past midnight, seven hours after the deadline commissioner David Stern set for players to accept the league’s latest proposal or have it replaced by a much harsher one that would drive the sides even farther apart. He has set other deadlines during the work stoppage, and players said they wouldn’t be intimidated into taking a bad deal by his threat. Failure to make a deal likely would increase the calls for the union to decertify so the players can file a lawsuit against the league in court, a risky and lengthy tactic that likely would doom the 2011-12 season. Union officials have downplayed the idea, but players might have no other leverage once the more severe proposal is put into play. The current offer calls for players to receive between 49 per cent and 51 per cent of basketball-related income, though the union said it would be impossible to get above 50.2 per cent. Players were guaranteed 57 per cent of BRI under the previous collective bargaining agreement.

Protesters slam ‘poshest 1%’ | Thousands of students marched through central London on yesterday to protest cuts to public spending and a big increase in university tuition fees.

RAMALLAH (Associated Press)

The Palestinians are resigned to defeat in their quest for full membership at the United Nations, officials said yesterday, and have started work on their backup plan – seeking an upgraded observer status that would give them access to key international organizations. Officials said they are already lobbying foreign governments, especially in western Europe, in hopes of rallying support for this alternate strategy. The officials said this new campaign in the General Assembly, dominated by developing countries normally sympathetic to the Palestinians, could be harder than anticipated because of expected opposition by the U.S. The Palestinians have struggled to muster the nine votes needed in the 15-member Security Council to approve their bid for membership as a state. The U.S., as a permanent member of the council, pledged to veto the request. The Palestinians had hoped to muster the nine-vote majority needed to trigger the veto – a scenario that would embarrass the U.S. by putting it at odds with the rest of the world. France and Britain have said they will abstain. It remains unclear when the council will actually vote on the issue.

speech to the nation in which he wished his unnamed successor well. But less than an hour later, Giorgos Karatzaferis, the head of a small right-wing party, stormed out of political leader talks being chaired by the country’s president, Karolos Papoulias. The president’s office scheduled another meeting for today – and a deal seemed as far away as ever. Karatzaferis told journalists outside the presidential mansion that Papandreou and conservative opposition leader Antonis Samaras had used “trickery” – but he provided no details.

GREEK POWER-SHARING TALKS DESCEND INTO CHAOS ATHENS (Associated Press)

PALESTINANS TURN TO BACKUP PLAN AHEAD OF UN BID FAILURE

13

Greece’s laborious power-sharing talks disintegrated into chaos yesterday, with political leaders failing to name a new prime minister who will take over from George Papandreou and head an interim government, despite three days of negotiations. The latest setback in more than a week of political turmoil came less than an hour after Papandreou made a televised address to the nation saying Greece’s political parties were joining together to save the debt-ridden country from rapidly approaching bankruptcy. The crisis erupted last week, when Papandreou said he would put a hard-fought 130 billion euro European debt deal to a referendum – horrifying European leaders, battering international markets and sparking a rebellion within his own party. Greece has survived since May 2010 on a 110 billion euro ($150 billion) rescue loan package from its eurozone partners and the IMF. European leaders agreed on a second rescue package on Oct. 27, which involves private bondholders who have agreed to cancel 50 per cent of the Greek

debt they hold as bonds – although details are still to be worked out. Papandreou will hand over power to an interim government whose main aim will be to secure the next vital 8 billion euro installment of Greece’s current bailout and approve the debt agreement before February elections. A final decision had been all but certain last night, with Papandreou delivering a farewell televised
