Fraser Valley VANCOUVER COPS RELEASE RIOT SUSPECT POSTER
VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Vancouver police are distributing 35,000 posters featuring the pictures of suspects who may have been involved in the Stanley Cup riot. Police Chief Jim Chu says the June 15 riot was extraordinary and requires extraordinary measures so suspected rioters can be identified and prosecuted. He says the posters that include photos of 104 suspects are being handed out by volunteers at colleges, shopping malls and other places, and the images are also available online. Vancouver police have already placed photos of riot suspects on their website, but this is the first time they’ve also created a poster. Sergeant Howard Chow with the Integrated Riot Investigation Team said in a statement yesterday that the posters have already proven to be popular. “The 35,000 posters our army of volunteers have been handing out have already had a major impact,” he said. “We’ve been receiving tips all afternoon regarding the photos in the poster.” Last month, police recommended multiple charges against 60 suspected rioters and said many more people would be charged as the investigation continues. However, the Crown has not yet approved any charges.

Occupy court case | Occupy Vancouver protesters are trespassing on city-managed land and should be legally forced to dismantle their month-long camp, a city lawyer has argued.
TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)
The B.C. Federation of Labour campaigned for four years for a $10-an-hour minimum wage, and that will be delivered May 1 when B.C.’s wage goes to $10.25. But federation president Jim Sinclair visited the legislature yesterday to tell the B.C. government it’s no longer enough. He wants another increase next fall to $11.25 an hour. That rate is what is needed to keep up with Statistics Canada’s “low-income cutoff ” (LICO), Sinclair told reporters. Critics often use LICO as a measure of poverty, although the federal agency says it is not, since it is a relative measure that grows along with inflation and economic growth. “Today the minimum wage is $9.50. That’s the second lowest in Canada, still,” Sinclair said. “Today, if we were at the LICO level, it would be at $11.25 an hour.” Premier Christy Clark announced in March that the minimum wage would be raised for the first time in a decade, and the $6 an hour “training wage” was abolished. It went from $8 to $8.75 on May 1, and jumped another 75 cents on Nov. 1. A third 75-cent increase
takes effect next May 1. B.C. Labour Minister Margaret MacDiarmid met with Sinclair before his news conference yesterday. “Our promise is, starting in 2012, to look at our policy,” MacDiarmid said afterwards. But she would make no commitment beyond next May. Sinclair also blasted what he called Clark’s “dumbest idea,” a lower wage for staff who primarily serve alcohol. That went to
$8.50 an hour May 1, $8.75 on Nov. 1 and is set to go to $9 an hour in May 2012. Clark said that measure is similar to the minimum wage system in Ontario, and it reflects higher tips earned by pub, lounge and cabaret workers. “There’s no rationale for this form of discrimination,” Sinclair said. “It doesn’t apply to anybody else who works in industries where they get tips.”

COPS CUT ONE FROM ‘TOP 10’ WANTED LIST SURREY LEADER (Black Press)
Police have reduced their “Top 10” most wanted list to nine, after capturing one of the suspects Tuesday afternoon. Just hours after RCMP released their Top 10 list, Randall Johnson was arrested without incident in the 13600 block of 20 Avenue in South Surrey. The 41-year-old was wanted on a warrant for dangerous driving causing bodily harm, obstruction of police officer and operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a police officer.
DRIVER, CHILDREN HURT IN SCHOOL BUS CRASH FORT ST. JOHN (Canadian Press)
Two children were hurt, one of them seriously, when their school bus collided with a semi-trailer in B.C.’s northeast. Fort St. John RCMP Cpl. Wahnese Antonioni says the accident took place just before 7 a.m. yesterday on a road in the community of Altona, north of the city. Antonioni said the two children and a driver were on the bus, and the driver of the semi-trailer was airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One of the children was taken to hospital with serious injuries and another suffered minor injuries.
MORE CHARGES FOR THE ‘BEAR DUDE’ GRAND FORKS GAZETTE (Black Press)
According to reports, more charges have been laid against Allen Piche regarding the feeding of dangerous wildlife. Piche, a.k.a the Bear Dude, was charged for feeding dangerous wildlife, under the Wildlife Act, in an incident stemming from a search of his property by the RCMP during the summer of 2010. Twenty-six docile bears were also found during the search, which took place in the Christina Lake area, near Grand Forks.

Pound of cocaine goes missing from Burnaby evidence room —
CITY WORKER CHARGED WITH STEALING DRUGS FROM RCMP WANDA CHOW (Burnaby NewsLeader)
A 56-year-old Burnaby employee has been charged with theft after cocaine was discovered missing from a Burnaby RCMP drug exhibit. Last spring, about 500 grams of cocaine was found to be missing during an exhibit audit at the Burnaby detachment, according to Sgt. Peter Thiessen of the RCMP’s E Division in a press release. Following an investigation, it was determined that a city employee with oversight of the exhibits had allegedly taken the missing cocaine. Burnaby resident Gary Read, 56, has been charged with a single count of theft. His first court date is scheduled for Dec. 13 in Vancouver Provincial Court. Read was a supervisor of the exhibit area at the detachment and had been a long-term employee, said
Burnaby deputy city manager Rick Earle. “We have strict policies on employee conduct and in accordance with those policies, Mr. Read was terminated,” Earle said. He could not disclose the date of termination nor exactly how long Read had worked for the city, citing privacy concerns. The missing cocaine is not related to a case before the courts, and all other drug exhibits at the detachment have been accounted for, Thiessen said. “When the audit revealed a discrepancy, we immediately launched an investigation and imposed greater restrictions to the exhibit room,” said Burnaby RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Critchley in a press release. “As a result of the audit and subsequent investigation we have improved the handling of exhibits, processes and procedures to prevent this from happening again.”
RCMP CAMERAS PACKED WITH IMAGES FOUND IN TREES TRAIL (Canadian Press)
Two RCMP cameras packed with images of a police surveillance and photos of unrelated investigations have been found in trees in Grand Forks. The cameras were spotted when they flashed on Dion Nordick’s property. Nordick’s lawyer, Jesse Gelber, says images stored on the camera’s memory cards reveal those installing the cameras appear to be RCMP officers. RCMP have demanded that the cameras be returned, but Gelber says Nordick has instructed him not to hand them over until an explanation is received.
LEAVES FINGERED FOR SKYTRAIN SHUTDOWN JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)
An unusually heavy build-up of leaves on the SkyTrain tracks was to blame for a lengthy disruption of the rapid transit system Nov. 12, TransLink officials say. The nearly six-hour shutdown of the Expo Line last Saturday happened after an intense storm the night before brought rain, hail and wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour. Officials said trains turned leaves in the tracks into an oily paste that caused some SkyTrain cars to skid, prompting trains to stop as a safety precaution.
Drivers, navigators, phone operators and dispatchers needed. Antlers optional. Nov 25, 26, Dec 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17 and 31.

Newly appointed RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson adjusts his glasses while speaking with the media in the foyer of the House of Commons yesterday in Ottawa.
Incoming RCMP commissioner Bob Paulson steps into his new job with a daunting task – get to the bottom of harassment within the national police force. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews introduced the veteran Mountie to media yesterday and immediately announced that the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP will investigate the issue that has dogged the force for years. The new commissioner endorsed the move wholeheartedly and said stamping out harassment will be the first item on his plate. “This does not represent the force that I joined and this condition cannot stand,” Paulson said. “I will sort this out in a way that Canadians can have trust and faith in the RCMP and, just as importantly, that employees of the RCMP can thrive in a healthy, productive and harassment-free environment.” Paulson, a bilingual native of Lachute, Que., and former member of the Canadian Forces, takes on his new job amid a controversy that was rekindled last week when a high-profile female B.C. Mountie said she spent years being treated as a potential sexual plaything by some supervisors.
Cpl. Catherine Galliford, who was the spokeswoman on the Air India and Robert Pickton investigations, said she finally broke because she had nowhere to turn to for help and is urging the formation of a union to represent the rank-and-file. Mistreatment within the RCMP is not limited to sexual harassment. In May, three years after Alberta Mountie Gerry Hoyland’s complaint was dismissed by the force, the independent review body that handles grievances from RCMP officers found he was the target of insults and threats. His file was sent back to the RCMP for further review and Hoyland wasn’t expecting a resolution any time soon. “They’re not handling the employment issues, and they’re dragging their feet on everything,” Hoyland said in July. Paulson said he will deal with the concerns. “It is my intention to address this problem so that the RCMP once again has the confidence and loyalty of all Canadians,” he said yesterday. Paulson spent most of his policing career in British Columbia before moving to Ottawa in 2005. He has a son and two daughters.

The federal government is easing restrictions on the use of the taxpayer-funded data it makes available to the public. Similar open data projects run by municipal governments have led to citizens building programs that include applications mapping restaurants according to food inspection reports. But the data being shared by the feds had prohibited the information being reverse-engineered to identify businesses or individuals so consumer-friendly apps with that kind of detail couldn’t be built.

FEDERAL-QUEBEC BATTLE OVER CRIME BILL ESCALATES OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
The war of words between Ottawa and Quebec over toughon-crime legislation is heating up. Senator Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu, one of the Harper government’s official spokesmen on its massive omnibus crime bill, says Quebec is “soft on crime.” Boisvenu also accused Quebec Justice Minister JeanMarc Fournier of failing to read the legislation. Fournier last week warned that Quebec won’t pay for higher prison costs resulting from Bill C-10. Fournier also proposed three amendments to the bill to soften penalties for young offenders.

Opposition MPs had better hope for a seat sale if they want to go to the next round of international climate talks. Canada’s delegation will include members of the governing Conservative party, as well as business leaders and other experts.

An overloaded school minibus crashed head-on with a truck in rural western China on Wednesday, killing at least 18 kindergarten children on their way to class, officials said. Two adults – the driver of the minibus and a teacher – also died in the accident, said an emergency official surnamed Fan. The bus had nine seats, but Fan said it was jammed with 62 children and two adults when it collided with the truck in China’s Gansu province, leaving the orange school vehicle crumpled and twisted. Authorities blamed the overloading for the accident.
The Israeli military says it is allowing rare shipments of construction materials into Gaza to allow the reconstruction of 10 privately owned factories. Until now only international projects have been allowed to import such materials, which Israel restricts because of concerns they could be used by the militants who regularly launch rockets at Israeli towns. In Gaza, Palestinian government co-ordinator Raed Fattouh said the first two trucks with materials entered Wednesday. The factories being rebuilt were destroyed when Israel invaded in 2009.
Greece’s new coalition government has won a confidence vote in parliament with a comfortable majority, backing a pledge by Prime Minister Lucas Papademos to speed up long-term reforms and secure a new bailout deal involving banks and rescue creditors. Lawmakers voted yesterday in favour of the new government formed last week by the majority Socialists, rival conservatives and a small right-wing nationalist party. Papademos stressed that his brief government’s task is “disproportionally large’’ compared to the time it would be in power. Elections have been tentatively set for Feb. 19.

Burbank, 50, who will take over command of the space station, is a veteran of 12-day shuttle missions in 2000 and 2006. The three men are to remain aboard the space station until March.

NEW PM MONTI FORMS ITALIAN GOVERNMENT WITH NO POLITICIANS ROME (Associated Press)
Prime Minister Mario Monti formed a new Italian government without a single politician yesterday, drawing from the ranks of bankers, diplomats and business executives to create a team to steer Italy away from financial disaster. The 68-year-old former European Union competition commissioner told reporters he will serve as Italy’s economy minister as well as its prime minister as he seeks “sacrifices” from across the political spectrum Mario Monti told to solve the economy’s woes reporters he will and get it growing again. serve as Italy’s After introducing his economy minister government, Monti and his as well as its prime new cabinet ministers were minister as he sworn in at a solemn cerseeks “sacrifices” emony at the presidential from across the palace, formally ending Silpolitical spectrum. vio Berlusconi’s 3 1/2-yearold government and the media mogul’s 17-year-long political dominance. Berlusconi and Monti later shared a handshake in an unofficial handover of power at the prime minister’s office. Monti said he will lay out his emergency plan today in the Senate before a confidence vote. A second vote, in the lower Chamber of Deputies, will follow, likely on Friday. Hopes for his new administration won Italy some respite in financial markets yesterday, but the relief didn’t last long. By afternoon, the yield or interest rate on 10-year Italian bonds was back dangerously near 7 per cent – the threshold that eventually forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek bailouts.
Up until summer, Italy had mostly avoided the European debt turmoil despite having a jaw-dropping debt of 1.9 trillion euros ($2.6 trillion), nearly 120 per cent of its GDP. But after Berlusconi’s frequent delays and backtracking on austerity measures, the markets lost faith that his government could fix Italy’s economic issues. Restoring confidence is crucial because, as the third-largest economy in the eurozone, Italy is too big for Europe to rescue.

FRENCH AMBASSADOR TO SYRIA RECALLED AS VIOLENCE GROWS BEIRUT (Associated Press)
Syria’s president faced a growing challenge to his iron rule from home and abroad yesterday, with renegade troops launching their most daring attack yet on the military and world leaders looking at possibilities for a regime without Bashar Assad. France recalled its ambassador to Damascus in the wake of recent attacks against diplomatic missions and increasing violence stemming from the 8-month-old uprising. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe warned that “the vise is tightening” around Assad. Syrian army Bashar Assad defectors yesterday attacked military and intelligence bases near the capital of Damascus and an army checkpoint in Hama province. The deadliest attack was in Hama, where army defectors killed at least eight soldiers and security forces in the checkpoint assault in the village of Kfar Zeita, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Free Syrian Army – a group of military defectors – said in a statement that its main pre-dawn attack targeted a compound run by air force intelligence in the Damascus suburb of Harasta.

nie Mae, of huge salaries and bonuses and put them on the same pay scale as federal employees. Gingrich sought to portray his role as a sign of valuable experience. “It reminds people that I know a great deal about Washington,” Gingrich said. “We just tried four years of amateur ignorance and it didn’t work very well. So, having someone who actually knows Washington might be a really good thing.”
URBANDALE, Iowa (Associated Press)
Rising in national polls, U.S. Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich found himself on the defensive yesterday over huge payments he received over the past decade from the federally backed housing agency Freddie Mac. Gingrich is the latest candidate to advance in the polls and challenge Mitt Romney, the favourite of the Republican establishment, only to face revelations from his past. Presidential Long unpopular candidate Newt among Republicans, the Gingrich found federally backed morthimself on the gage lender has become a defensive yesterday target of anti-government over payments sentiment because of the he received from U.S. housing crisis. Gingrich said he didn’t remember exactly how much he was paid, but a former Freddie Mac official said it was at least $1.5 million US for consulting contracts stretching from 1999 to 2007. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a personnel matter. Gingrich said he provided “strategic advice for a long period of time” after he resigned as speaker of the House of Representatives following his party’s losses in the 1998 elections. He defended Freddie Mac’s role and said, “every American should be interested in expanding housing opportunities.” On Tuesday, a House committee voted to strip top executives of Freddie and its larger competitor, Fan-

U.S. MAN ARRESTED AFTER BULLETS HIT THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON (Associated Press)
A man was arrested yesterday in connection with an investigation into a shooting near the White House, the U.S. Secret Service said. The Secret Service discovered Tuesday that two bullets had hit the White House, one of them apparently cracking a window on the residential level while President Barack Obama was travelling. The discovery of the bullet holes followed reports of gunfire near the White House on Friday night, although the bullets have not been conclusively connected with the Friday shooting. An assault rifle and an abandoned vehicle were found, which led authorities to link Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez to the reported gunfire. Ortega, 21, was arrested yesterday by Pennsylvania authorities at a hotel in the southwest part of the state. Ortega is from Idaho. He was reported missing Oct. 31 by his family. He has an arrest record in three states but has not been linked to any radical organizations, U.S. Park Police said. The bullet that hit the window was stopped by ballistic glass. The Secret Service did not disclose the location of the second bullet, saying only that it “was found on the exterior of the White House.”

tect Justin.” Yeater has not come forward with any evidence to prove Bieber is the father, but her attorneys insist the paternity test will prove he has a son. Leving said the media storm that has ensued combined with death threats made to Yeater were the main reasons why the lawsuit was withdrawn. “I will state right now it’s better that it’s handled out of court which is in the best interests of everybody,” Leving said.
An attorney for a woman who claims Justin Bieber is the father of her baby boy said yesterday her lawsuit has been withdrawn as both camps await the singer to take a paternity test. Chicago-based lawyer Jeffrey Leving told reporters that the suit filed in San Diego Superior Court by Mariah Yeater, 20, was recently removed without prejudice. However, the lawsuit could be refiled at a later date. A hearing set for Dec. 15 has been cancelled. STILL “This case was never dismissed. It can be refilled today or tomorrow,” Leving TAKING A said. “We are trying to settle this matPATERNITY ter out of court with Bieber’s camp.” TEST Yeater claims she had just turned 19 when she and Bieber, then 16, had a brief sexual encounter after one of the singer’s concerts last fall in a backstage backroom at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Bieber has said he’s never met Yeater and has denied allegations that he fathered Yeater’s son who was born in July. Matthew Hiltzik, a spokesman for the teen heartthrob, said Bieber still intends to submit to a paternity test in the coming weeks. “As we’ve said from the beginning, it’s sad that someone would fabricate such a malicious, defamaASSOCIATED PRESS tory, and demonstrably false claim,” Hiltzik said. STAR DEFENCE WITNESS IN MJ DOCTOR TRIAL FINED
LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)
A scientist who was the star defence witness in the trial of Michael Jackson’s doctor was sanctioned yesterday by the trial judge and fined $250 US for violating a court order during his testimony. Dr. Paul White, a pioneer in the use of propofol, said he didn’t think he was doing anything wrong when he told jurors the judge had forbidden him to testify about conversations with Dr. Conrad Murray. Murray’s lawyer J. Michael Flanagan argued at yesterday’s hearing that White was inexperienced as a witness. But prosecutor David Walgreen accused White of purposely trying to sabotage the case. “I had no idea your honour had told me not to go into this area,” White told the judge. “I apologize profusely.” White portrayed himself as a novice at testifying. “This is not something I do for a living,” he said. “I did my best to answer questions as truthfully and honestly as I could.” Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said his instructions to White and the lawyers were clear and repeated many times in chambers and in open court. He said White openly disobeyed.

CO-STAR: CLOONEY IS THE ‘LEAST INTIMIDATING PERSON’ ON EARTH
ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING MUNCHKIN ACTORS DIES AT 93
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
For her role in The Descendants, 20-year-old newcomer Shailene Woodley was tasked with treating George Clooney not as an industry icon, but with the sort of dismissive derision a rebellious teenager would apply to her dad. So, it was important that Woodley – with no major ďŹ lm projects on her resume – avoid being intimidated by the 50-year-old heart-throb. “The ďŹ rst day I met him, my heart was pounding – like, ‘Ohh, that’s George Clooney!’ I started sweating,â€? a cheerful Woodley recalled. “And then he came up to me, gave me a big hug, and said: ‘Welcome, sweetie.’ ... And immediately the intimidation factor went away.â€? “George Clooney is the least intimidating person on this planet.â€? Still, that isn’t to say that Clooney didn’t earn Woodley’s respect over the course of shooting in Hawaii. “The man is a superhuman,â€?
DUBLIN, Ga. (Associated Press)
Karl Slover, one of the last surviving actors who played Munchkins in the classic 1939 ďŹ lm, The Wizard of Oz, has died. He was 93. The 4-foot-5 Slover died of cardiopulmonary arrest Tuesday afternoon in a central Georgia hospital, said Laurens County Deputy Coroner Nathan Stanley. According to friends, as recently as last weekend, Slover appeared at events in the suburban Chicago area. Slover was best known for playing the lead trumpeter in the Munchkins’ band but also had roles as a townsman and soldier in the ďŹ lm, said John Fricke, author of 100 Years of Oz and ďŹ ve other books on the movie and its star, Judy Garland. Slover was one of the tiniest male Munchkins. Long after Slover retired, he continued to appear around the country at festivals and events. He was one of seven Munchkins at the 2007 unveiling of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame dedicated to the little people in the movie. Only three remain of the 124 diminutive actors who played the beloved Munchkins.

Clooney was similarly effusive in returning the praise for Woodley while making the press rounds at the Toronto Film Festival, and he’s not the only observer who has singled out her performance in the emotional drama. Written and directed by Oscar winner Alexander Payne, The Descendants is a low-key, contemplative family drama that earned raves during its run in Toronto, with particular praise being heaped upon Woodley – Variety, for instance, called her a “revelation.â€? The Descendants, which opens tomorrow, casts Clooney as a lawyer whose wife is dying after sustaining head injuries in a freak boating accident. Consumed with grief, he seeks to reconnect with his two deďŹ ant daughters while seething over the news that his wife was having an affair prior to her accident. Complicating matters further, he has to decide what to do with a valuable piece of Hawaiian land that he’s inherited.

FACEBOOK STOPS WAVE OF SEX SPAM NEW YORK (Associated Press)
A recent wave of spam flooding Facebook users’ pages with graphic pictures depicting sex and violence has mostly been stopped, but the social networking site said yesterday that people need to remain vigilant to keep their accounts from being hijacked. Facebook said the latest attack tricked users into pasting and executing malicious JavaScript in their browser URL bar, exploiting a browser vulnerability that caused them to unknowingly share the content, according to a statement. “Our team responded quickly and we have eliminated most of the spam caused by this attack,” the statement said. “We are now working to improve our systems to better defend against similar attacks in the future.” According to Facebook, no user data or accounts were compromised during the attack.
CANADIAN INCOMES COULD BE $7,500 HIGHER: STUDY OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
A new report argues that Canadians are paying a huge price for not being as productive as their U.S. counterparts. The Conference Board says per capita output would be $8,500 a year higher, and disposable income $7,500 more, if Canada had matched U.S. productivity gains between 1988 and 2008. The Ottawa-based economic think tank says it hopes the study will drive home the point of the importance of improving Canada’s lagging productivity. As well, corporate profits could be 40 per cent higher and government revenues 31 per cent more. During the 20 year period studied, Canada’s productivity increased by an average 1.4 per cent a year, compared to 2.2 per cent in the U.S. ADD YOUR

CANUCKS HUMBLED IN LOSS TO CHICAGO VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
This time the Vancouver Canucks paid the price for penalties. The Chicago Blackhawks converted the game’s first two power plays last night to defeat Vancouver 5-1 and avenge a 6-2 drubbing at home earlier this month. In that game, the Canucks scored five goals on six man-advantage situations against their bitter playoff rivals from the last three seasons. Andrew Brunette and Patrick Kane erased a 1-0 Vancouver lead midway through the second period. Jonathan Toews scored his fifth goal in four games and Patrick Sharp added another 1:49 later to provide a cushion in the third period. Steve Montador completed the Hawk attack. Jannik Hansen scored for the Canucks against netminder Corey Crawford, who made 28 saves. The Canucks, who had won three of their previous four starts, slipped to 9-9-1 as the hangover continues from last spring’s run to the Cup final. Both clubs had opportunities in a scoreless, sometimes scrambly first period but shooters either missed the net or couldn’t control the puck Toews was foiled by Canuck netminder Cory Sch-
neider early in the opening period and later lost control of the puck when he burst in from the left wing. Ryan Kesler had the best first-period chance for Vancouver but shovelled the puck wide. He also set up Alex Burrows in front but the Canuck forward couldn’t convert. Hansen got the game’s opening goal on the first shot of the second period. He tapped in Henrik Sedin’s centring pass for his fourth goal in five games and fifth of the season. Hansen also backhanded the puck wide on a third period short-handed chance. Brunette equalized on the power play after Kesler was called for tripping. The Chicago winger had an open net and Schneider out of position when Marcus Kruger’s pass arrived from the side boards. Burrows drew the game’s second penalty for slashing Duncan Keith on the hand and the Canucks paid again. Kane was in a perfect spot to slip a clever set-up from Marian Hossa behind Schneider for his third goal in five games. He hit the post on a third-period power play. Toews then finished a three-way passing play with Hossa and Victor Stalberg while Sharp beat Schneider on a short-side shot. Hossa and Toews also picked up assists on Montador’s late goal.

QB LULAY ONE OF 9 B.C. LIONS NAMED TO ALL STAR SQUAD TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Travis Lulay was voted the CFL’s all-star quarterback yesterday, leading a list of a league-high nine B.C. Lions named to the all-star team. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers led the East Division with five players on the squad. The Montreal Alouettes were next with four selections, one more than the Calgary Stampeders. The Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos were next with two players apiece while the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders had one each. Edmonton’s Jerome Messam took one of the two all-star spots at running back, a day after the team announced he was done for the season with a knee injury suffered in the West semifinal. Montreal’s Brandon Whitaker was the other running back. The all-stars were selected by a combination of fan balloting, CFL head coaches, and the Football Reporters of Canada. Lulay, the West finalist for the CFL’s outstanding player award, nabbed the one all-star quarterback spot ahead of Montreal’s Anthony Calvillo, the East nominee for outstanding player. The CFL’s outstanding player awards are determined by different voters – fans don’t vote. Lulay completed 342 of 583 passes for 4,815 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during the season. Calvillo completed 404 of 654 passes for 5,251 yards, 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

CAREY PRICE GETS SHUTOUT, ASSIST AS HABS BLANK CANES MONTREAL (Canadian Press)
P.K. Subban scored his first goal of the year and Carey Price made 25 saves for his first shutout and got an assist as the Montreal Canadiens downed the listless Carolina Hurricanes 4-0 last night. Michael Cammalleri and Yannick Weber scored in the first period, while Subban and Travis Moen added goals in the second for the Canadiens (8-7-3), who moved above the .500 mark for the first time this season. Montreal is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games while Carolina is 3-7-0. Price was rarely tested until the third period, when he made a sharp save on short-range a blast from Eric Staal. After Price played the puck, Cammalleri one-timed a Tomas Plekanec pass inside Cam Ward’s post 7:15 into the game to open the scoring. Weber’s change-up shot on a power play got by Ward at 15:15 of the first. The Hurricanes abandoned a wide area in their zone to allow Subban to set up in the slot and drill in his first goal on his 52nd shot of the season 6:13 into the second period. Moen banked in his sixth of the season with 39 seconds left in the period.

FRIENDS, FAMILY REMEMBER JOE FRAZIER IN HIS HOMETOWN BEAUFORT, S.C. (Associated Press)
Long before he became Smokin’ Joe, the future heavyweight champion was known in his South Carolina hometown as “Billy Boy” – a stocky farmer’s son who honed his devastating left hook on a punching bag made from a flour sack stuffed with corn cobs, rags and Spanish moss. Joe Frazier would make Philadel-

More than 250 family members and friends gathered yesterday for a church memorial service near his hometown of Beaufort. “He was Joe Frazier to the world, but he was our Uncle Billy,” said Dannette Frazier, one of about a dozen of FraJoe Frazier zier’s nieces and nephews who still live near the 10-acre farm where the boxer was raised. Frazier died Nov. 7 at age 67. The service had none of the

celebrity trappings of Frazier’s funeral Monday in Philadelphia, where Jesse Jackson delivered the eulogy to a congregation including Muhammad Ali, former heavyweight champ Larry Holmes and promoter Don King. Also absent from the service was Frazier’s body. In place of his casket, two large portraits of Frazier stood at the church altar – one of him wearing the Olympic gold medal he won in 1964; the other taken with his massive heavyweight champion belt slung over his shoulder.

MYSTERY ALASKAN ARTIFACT IS OVER 1,000 YEARS OLD ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Associated Press)
A research team is attempting to discover the origin of a cast bronze artifact excavated from an Inupiat Eskimo home site believed to be about 1,000 years old. The artifact resembles a small buckle, researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder said in an announcement. How it got to Alaska remains a mystery. “The object appears to be older than the house we were excavating by at least a few hundred years,” research assistant John Hoffecker said in the “The object appears release. The excavations are part of a project paid for by the U.S. National Science Foundation to study human response to climate change at Cape Espenberg from the year 800 to 1400. Archaeologist Owen Mason, a research affiliate with the university based in Anchorage, says six or seven home sites were excavated. “The whole plan was to look at how subsistence and social practices changed over about 500 years in time,” he said. The work in summer 2011 was the third and final complete season for the project. Analysis of animal
bones and wood objects including boat parts will follow. “We’re trying to figure out if the people were whaling,” Mason said Monday. “That’s a big topic. The wood is a big story. We have to get more radiocarbon dates, more tree ring dates. We’re going to figure out the climate story from the wood.” The bronze artifact was found in 3 feet of sediment near the entryway to the house by a University of California doctoral ASSOCIATED PRESS student, Jeremy Foin, as he A University of Colorado at Boulder research associate says in a release that the artifact found at Cape Espenberg resembles a buckle and may have used a sifting screen. AFGHANISTAN: PARTNERSHIP WITH U.S. DEPENDS ON END OF NATO NIGHT RAIDS KABUL, Afghanistan (Associated Press)
EVICTION NOTICES PINNED TO OCCUPY LONDON TENTS LONDON (Associated Press)
London ofďŹ cials attached eviction notices to protest tents outside St. Paul’s Cathedral yesterday, asking the demonstrators to remove them within a day or face legal action. The notices posted by the City of London Corporation said the protest camp was “an unlawful obstructionâ€? of a sidewalk, and asked protesters to take down “all tents and other structuresâ€? by 10 a.m. PaciďŹ c Time today. The cathedral and the corporation had suspended legal action to remove the camp two weeks ago, and offered the protesters a deal to allow them to stay until the new year if they then agreed to leave. But the corporation said Tuesday that talks had failed and it was resuming legal action. More than 200 tents have been pitched outside the iconic church since Oct. 15 in a protest against capitalist excess inspired by New York’s Occupy Wall Street, and the protesters said they would resist attempts to move them. Police in the U.S. have been moving in to clear away similar protests, breaking up camps in Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, Oakland, California, on Monday and on Tuesday in New York, where about 200 people were arrested.

The Afghan president told tribal elders yesterday that any ongoing partnership with the United States would need to include an end to widely unpopular nighttime raids by NATO and on the international forces handing over control of detention centres to Afghan troops. Hamid Karzai spoke at the opening of a grand council, or “loya jirga,â€? during which the elders are to consider the terms of the U.S. presence in their country in the coming years. Karzai told the roughly 2,000 delegates to keep in mind both the need for international help and the need to make sure Afghans are setting the rules in their own country. “We want to have a strong partnership with the U.S. and NATO, but with conditions,â€? Karzai said. “We want our national sovereignty, and an end to night raids and to the detention of our countrymen. We don’t want parallel structures alongside our government.â€? The U.S.-led coalition has argued that night operations to kill or capture insurgents are an effective way to keep pressure on militants, while minimizing the risk to innocent civilians. say Afghan forces are the ďŹ rst in the door of any raid and that most of the operations are conducted without a shot ďŹ red. Karzai says that the troops conducting night raids treat too many civilians as if they were insurgents and violate citizens’ privacy in an intensely conservative society. The jirga will be meeting over four days to discuss the proposed strategic partnership with the U.S.
that would oversee the American military presence here as troops draw down, as well as possible peace talks with the Taliban. The jirga holds no legal authority, but if the group backs Karzai’s demands, it could give him extra leverage in negotiations over the deal to keep some American troops in Afghanistan another decade, despite opposition from his people and the war-weary U.S. public.
