NDP MP DROPS F-BOMBS IN TWITTER BLAST OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

One of the NDP’s most prominent MPs is making no apologies after strafing his Twitter followers with F-bombs. Winnipeg MP Pat Martin erupted in angerfuelled electronic profanity late Wednesday after the Conservative government shut down debate on a budget bill. “This is a (expletive) disgrace... closure again. And on the Budget,” read a tweet on Martin’s Twitter account. “There’s not a democracy in the world that would tolerate this jackboot (expletive).” The exchange set off a stir in the Twitterverse after it was monitored by Martin’s 1,600 followers. Martin, who represents the riding of Winnipeg Centre, said he committed no foul. “I don’t apologize for what I said. It was a legitimate reaction to a genuine frustration,” Martin said yesterday in Ottawa. The controversy has resulted in more exposure for Martin. The number of people following him on Twitter jumped to more than 3,000 yesterday. He said he hopes the controversy has brought attention to the government’s move to end debate on bills in the Commons. “The Harper Conservatives are running roughshod over everything that’s good and decent about our parliamentary democracy and denying us the right to do our jobs as elected members of Parliament,” he said. “That’s what people should be outraged about, and if they take note because of what I said last night, I think that’s to everybody’s benefit.”

B.C. Liberal backbencher Moira Stilwell has proposed legislation she says will help prevent concussions in youth athletes. Elections BC has dismissed complaints from an opposition MLA and the candidate that B.C. Liberal MLA Kash Heed defeated in the 2009 B.C. election. Heed’s former campaign manager Barinder Sall had alleged in an interview with CBC television that there was a further $40,000 in unreported spending by the B.C. Liberal campaign in VancouverFraserview. Keith Archer, the new chief electoral officer for Elections BC, announced yesterday that the allegation was examined by police and a special prosecutor investigating the disputed election. Complaints to Elections BC from NDP justice critic Leonard Krog and Gabriel Yiu, the NDP candidate defeated in Vancouver-Fraserview by 748 votes, did not contain any new information and the case is now closed, Archer said. In August, Heed was fined $11,000 for exceeding election spending limits, but the judge did not order a new election. Heed has maintained he did not know about the undeclared spending for anonymous brochures

targeting the NDP. Sall and printer Dinesh Khanna pleaded guilty in October to offences under the Elections Act for printing and distributing the Chinese-language brochures, which accused the NDP of supporting the legalization of drugs and prostitution.

Krog said yesterday the election in Vancouver-Fraserview remains tainted, and Heed should at least apologize for what his campaign team did. Premier Christy Clark has said it will be up to the B.C. Liberal caucus to decide if Heed can remain a party MLA.

UBC PROFS URGE UN TO MONITOR CLIMATE CASH VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Three professors from the University of British Columbia say they want to ensure billions of dollars pledged to help developing nations deal with climate change are properly spent. The three argued in a paper published in the journal Science yesterday that the $30-billion US infusion for the UN’s Green Climate Fund must be spent on initiatives that make a difference on the ground. Simon Donner, one of the authors, says he’s worried that if the money isn’t managed well, there will be no political will to give more in the future.

Former TV reporter Ron Bencze, charged with nine childrelated sex crimes earlier this year, has been arrested again for breaching his bail conditions. Bencze, a Surrey resident, is awaiting trial on the charges and was prohibited from having contact with young people as part of the conditions of his release on bail. Police say he was spotted last month outside a school and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He turned himself in on Wednesday. He now faces a new charge of breaching conditions.

Company officials note the pipeline also delivers most of the gasoline used in the Lower Mainland. But West argues any increased capacity is strictly about its ability to export. “It’s all about profits for Kinder Morgan and not what’s in the best interest of people in B.C.” Kinder Morgan hasn’t yet formally proposed the $4-billion pipeline twinning but is testing the appetite of customers for more capacity.

After more than a decade of hearings, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled in 2005 that MILLIONS the crown corporation had vioAT lated the act and awarded back pay STAKE and interest of about $150 million. OTTAWA LAUNCHES NEW POOLED PENSION PLANS OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

The federal government says it’s tabling legislation to establish pooled registered pension plans to help Canadians save. Minister of State for Finance Ted Menzies announced in Toronto that the PRPPs will give small firms and their workers access to a large privately administered pension plan for the first time.

QUEBEC: HARPER TOUGH ON DEMOCRACY, NOT CRIME QUEBEC (Canadian Press)

The Quebec government is using some tough language over the Harper Conservatives’ handling of crime legislation today. Quebec says the Harper government is not being tough on crime – but tough on democracy. That’s from Quebec’s Public Security Minister Jean-Marc Fournier. He says the Tories’ decision to ram the bill through the House of Commons was both unexpected and inappropriate. Several provinces have complained that the tougher prison sentences in the bill will do more to increase their costs without reducing crime.

The Vatican is taking legal action against the Benetton clothing company to prevent the circulation of an ad featuring a fake photo montage of Pope Benedict XVI kissing a top Egyptian imam on the lips. Benetton withdrew the ad immediately after its debut Wednesday. Benetton’s “Unhate” campaign features fake photos of a half-dozen purported political nemeses in lip-locked embraces, including President Barack Obama and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The accused ringleader of a 2010 terror plot in Norway has rejected charges that he conspired with al-Qaida to attack a Danish newspaper, saying he was planning a solo raid against the Chinese Embassy in Oslo. Mikael Davud, a Chinese Muslim, told the Oslo district court yesterday that his two alleged accomplices helped him acquire bomb-making ingredients but didn’t know he was planning an attack. Prosecutors say the Norwegian cell first wanted to attack a newspaper that printed Prophet Muhammad cartoons, and then changed plans to seek to murder one of the cartoonists instead.

Cambodia’s UN-backed tribunal yesterday ruled a former senior Khmer Rouge leader unfit to stand trial for genocide and other crimes because she has Alzheimer’s disease. The tribunal said the illness diminishes Ieng Thirith’s mental capacity and ordered the 79-year-old defendant freed from detention. Ieng Thirith was minister for social affairs and is accused of involvement in the “planning, direction, co-ordination and ordering of widespread purges” and has been charged with crimes against humanity, genocide, homicide, torture and religious persecution.

Bosnia’s parties have again failed to form a new government 13 months passed after elections. Bosnia has been without a government since an election in October last year because of disputes among nationalists and non-nationalists. The main dispute is over the ministerial posts reserved by constitution for Croats in Bosnia.

Assange was accused of rape, coercion and molestation following encounters with two Swedish women in August 2010.

SYRIA CRISIS LOOKS LIKE ‘CIVIL WAR’, RUSSIA SAYS BEIRUT (Associated Press)

Syria’s allies in Russia called for urgent talks yesterday between Damascus and the opposition, saying an attack by Syrian renegade troops on a government building looks like the start of a civil war. President Bashar Assad is facing severe international isolation stemming from his crackdown on an 8-month-old uprising, which the UN estimates has killed 3,500 people. The Arab League suspended Damascus on Army defectors Wednesday and reportedly fired threatened economic machine-guns and sanctions if the viorockets at an Air lence continues. Wednesday’s attack could not be independently confirmed, and the Free Syrian Army released no details about the fighting or possible casualties. The army defectors reportedly fired machine-guns and rockets at an Air Force Intelligence base just outside Damascus – a brazen attack that sent a strong signal the popular uprising could descend into an armed conflict. Lavrov urged Syrian and opposition forces alike to cease violence and negotiate, but he reserved his harshest words for the opposition.

SUSPECTED U.S. MISSILES KILL 7 IN PAKISTAN PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Associated Press)

Suspected U.S. drones fired four missiles at a compound in Pakistan’s rugged tribal region near the Afghan border yesterday, killing eight alleged militants and wounding two others in the third such strike in as many days, Pakistani intelligence officials said. Elsewhere in the tribal region, Pakistani security forces pounded militant hideouts in two different areas, killing 37 suspected militants, said government officials. The figures could not be independently verified because of the difficulty of reporting in the tribal region. The drones struck in the Ramzak area of North Waziristan, the main hub for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in Pakistan, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters. The U.S. has conducted around 200 drone strikes in North Waziristan in recent years, most targeting al-Qaida militants and Afghan Taliban fighters who are battling American troops in Afghanistan.

IDAHO MAN CHARGED WITH TRYING TO ASSASSINATE OBAMA

PITTSBURGH (Associated Press)

An Idaho man accused of firing an assault rifle at the White House believed he was Jesus and thought President Barack Obama was the anti-Christ. He had become increasingly agitated with the federal government, and at one point suggested the president was planning to implant computer tracking chips into children, according to court documents and those who knew him. Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, 21, was charged yesterday with attempting to assassinate the president or his staff. He is accused of firing nine rounds at the White House last Friday night – one of them cracking a window of the first family’s living quarters – when Obama and the first lady were away. If convicted, Ortega faces up to life in prison. Ortega made his first court appearance before a federal magistrate in Pittsburgh yesterday, one day after he was arrested at a western Pennsylvania hotel. He will be taken back from a federal court in Pittsburgh to face the charges in Washington, D.C. Ortega will remain in federal custody at least until a magistrate in Washington can determine if he should remain jailed until his trial on the charge, which carries up to life in prison.

This is the sequence of events in Breaking Dawn that’s alarmed a group of communications professors from the University of Missouri, who believe Part 1 of the ďŹ nal movie instalment of the Twilight series, which opens today, packs a message that may not resonate with all young girls. Demi Moore is ending her marriage to Ashton Kutcher, she said yesterday. Moore, 49, and Kutcher, 33, were wed in September 2005. The couple’s relationship became tabloid fodder in recent months as rumours swirled about Kutcher’s alleged inďŹ delity. “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my sixyear marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation,â€? she said in her statement “Marriage is one of the most difďŹ cult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail,â€? Kutcher tweeted yesterday. Moore said in 2007 that her relationship “caught us both by surprise.â€? “If somebody would have said, ‘OK, here is the prediction: You’re going to meet a man 25 years old and he’s going to see being with you and having your three kids as a bonus,’ I would have said, ‘Keep dreaming,’â€? Moore said.

WOODY: UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

AMY WINEHOUSE WAS PLANNING A SUPERGROUP

NEW YORK (Associated Press)

You will see his typewriter, the Olympia portable Woody Allen has used for pounding out everything he’s written since his teens. You will see the contents of the “idea drawer” in his bedside table where he stashes random paper scraps, any of which might inspire his next film. You will see him in the role of director, both in the distant past and while making his 2010 film, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger – a remarkable unveiling by an artist known for keeping a locked-down set. In sum, you will see this legendarily private filmmaker up close and personal, charming and candid, and, yes, funny as he strikes a clear contrast with the neurotic, death- and sex-obsessed Manhattanite he has famously depicted in so many classic films. Turns out, Woody Allen at heart is a writer. “Writing is the great life,” he says at the start of the film, seen recumbent on his bed scribbling on a legal pad. Only when production begins on the screenplay he has written does reality set in, he says, and

NEW YORK (Associated Press)

Amy Winehouse had written all the songs that were to appear on her third album. She even picked out song titles. But music producer Salaam Remi said the soul singer, who died over the summer, was not rushing to release that new material, instead planning to drop a jazz album first with a “supergroup” including ?uestlove of the Roots. “She had written down everything she wanted to do,” Remi said this week. Only two of the tracks Winehouse wrote were recorded and appear on her compilation album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures. Winehouse died from accidental alcohol poisoning at age 27. Remi produced most of the upcoming CD, saying Winehouse was a perfectionist when it came to composing music. “She was taking her time with it, and at the end of the day all of her songs are somewhat autobiographical, so she had to live through something, then get out of it and then look back at it to be able to write about it,” he said. “Who knows what will happen in the future with that,” he said of the songs she penned.

Scandal | Tyler Perry is defending his decision to cast Kim Kardashian in an upcoming film about marriage, saying it will be educational.

anyone else who is interested in a prolific, persistent artist’s creative world. It airs Sunday and Monday on PBS. The film revisits Allen’s childhood in the Midwood section of Brooklyn and his first venture as a professional writer: supplying jokes to columnists and comics while still in high school. It covers his growing success in the 1950s and 1960s as a comedy writer for TV, then as a rising standup comic in his own right. But this was all a prelude to Take the Money and Run in 1969, a zany comedy he wrote, directed and starred in – his first outing as an auteur who, astonishingly since then, has averaged one film per year for more than 40 years. Allen has never been distinguished by his box-office might, although Annie Hall (1977) was a critical and commercial sensation, and this year’s Midnight in Paris caught everyone off-guard by becoming his highest grosser yet. Speaking of his up-and-down fortunes, Allen says, with the flicker of a smile, “I don’t really care about commercial success – and the end result is, I rarely achieve it.”

TODAY’S BEST ATHLETES… CANADIAN PRESS

Ottawa Senator Zenon Konopka, right, celebrates his goal against Edmonton Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk during the third period last night in Edmonton.

SENATORS BEAT OILERS, EARN THIRD STRAIGHT ROAD WIN EDMONTON (Canadian Press)

Milan Michalek had a goal and an assist as the Ottawa Senators won their third game in a row on a long road trip, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 last night. Colin Greening, Kaspars Daugavins, Jesse Winchester and Zenon Konopka also scored for the Senators (10-9-1) who have rebounded with their recent string of wins on the heels of a five-game slide. It was also the first time the Senators have won both games on a road trip through Alberta since 2003. Anton Lander and Ryan Jones scored in response for the Oilers (9-7-2) who are heading in the opposite direction with four straight defeats and losses in five out of six following a six-game winning streak. After some great early chances for the Oilers, the Senators took a 2-0 lead on their first two shots of the game on Edmonton starter Nikolai Khabibulin. Seven and a half minutes into the match, the Senators broke away on a two-on-one and Michalek feathered a past through to Greening for his fifth goal of the season. Just nine seconds later, Ottawa came flying off

the faceoff and Daugavins blasted a shot that beat Khabibulin high to the glove side. The Senators made it 3-0 with just under a minute to play in the opening frame as Michalek blasted his 12th of the year into the Oiler net following a Spezza faceoff win. Devan Dubnyk came in to replace Khabibulin in the Edmonton net to start the second. Edmonton got back into the game two minutes into the second period on a short-handed break as Lander ripped a wrist shot past Craig Anderson for the first goal of his NHL career. Ottawa made it 4-1 five minutes later seconds after Oilers forward Jordan Eberle was hooked down in the Sens’ zone on a scoring opportunity that had the fans howling when there was no call. Winchester took the puck up ice and beat Dubnyk up high for his first of the year. The Senators took a four-goal lead three minutes into the third when Konopka batted in a backhand shot in tight past Dubnyk. Edmonton got a goal back on the power play in the final minute when an Eric Belanger shot caromed off a couple of legs, including finally off of Jones, and into the net.

ESKIMO RECEIVERS POSE TWIN THREAT TO B.C. LIONS’ CFL SECONDARY FINAL WEST EDMONTON (Canadian Press)

The Edmonton Eskimos and B.C. Lions have similar problems heading into Sunday’s CFL West Division Final. While Edmonton has to figure out how to stop receivers Arland Bruce and Geroy Simon, the Lions know that if they double team slotback Fred Stamps, Adarius Bowman will just run around them – and over them – to the end zone. Bowman, the 26-year-old receiver from Tennessee, broke a tackle on a swing pass to run 56 yards and set up a critical touchdown in Edmonton’s 33-19 West semifinal win over the Calgary Stampeders last weekend. A week earlier, he singlehandedly torched the Saskatchewan Roughriders for two touchdowns in a 10-catch, 226-yard performance to guarantee Edmonton’s first home playoff game in seven years. Bowman said the credit goes to Stamps. When the 29-year-old Louisiana native isn’t making highlight-reel catches, he’s getting smothered and double-teamed off the line, opening up space for Bowman and fellow receiver Jason Barnes. “He’s been a great part of all the success I’ve had this year,” said Bowman. “He’s a leader I’ve looked at on and off the field. I’ve enjoyed every day coming here working with these guys and I feel like it shows on the field. Our team chemistry has been the key.” Stamps and Bowman couldn’t be tighter statistically. Both finished with 1,153 yards receiving despite missing time with injuries.

LAST-MINUTE TD LIFTS BRONCOS PAST NEW YORK JETS DENVER (Associated Press)

Tim Tebow’s 20-yard touchdown run with 58 seconds left capped a 95-yard drive and sent the Denver Broncos to a 17-13 victory over the stunned New York Jets last night. Tebow saw the blitz and outflanked safety Eric Smith around the left edge, then cut back and bulled his way past other Jets into the end zone. “We have a resilient team,” Tebow said. And a resilient, if unorthodox quarterback. The Broncos (5-5) are 4-1 since Tebow replaced Kyle Orton. The Jets (5-5) lost their second heartbreaker in four days. Mark Sanchez’s desperation pass toward the end zone was batted down as time expired. Nick Folk’s 45-yard field goal broke a 10-10 tie with 9:14 remaining, and the Broncos found themselves facing a daunting task when they got the ball back with 5:54 left at their own five-yard line. Tebow ran just twice for 11 yards until the final drive, when he carried seven times for 58 yards in a performance reminiscent of his miracle in Miami, when he was ineffective for 55 minutes, then led the Broncos to two TDs in the final five minutes of a game Denver won in overtime.

World. GREEK PROTESTERS CLASH WITH POLICE IN ATHENS ATHENS (Associated Press)

Masked youths clashed with riot police outside Greece’s parliament and the U.S. embassy yesterday as thousands of austerity-weary Greeks marched through Athens in an annual commemoration of a bloody student uprising in the 1970s. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the rioters, and some 60 people were detained for questioning but no injuries were reported. Some 28,000 people took part in the march, according to police estimates, making it one of the biggest Nov. 17 protests in years. Seven thousand officers were monitoring the crowd. With loan-dependent Greece heading for its fourth year of recession and saddled with record unemployment, the demonstration was the first test of public sentiment for the new coalition government of Lucas Papademos, a technocrat enjoying widespread popularity, according to polls. The annual protest commemorates the squashing of a pro-democracy student uprising in 1973 by the military dictatorship that ruled Greece from 1967-74 – and whose backing from the U.S. still rankles in the country.

Birmingham. Kandra, Comtel’s majority shareholder, told the Associated Press from Vienna that travel agents had taken the passengers’ money before the planes left but had not passed it on to the airline. “This is not my problem,” he said. “The problem is with the agents.” “We have not run out of money,” he said. “We have enough.” Airport officials in Birmingham, however, said yesterday that Comtel’s weekend flights had been cancelled.

PAY FOR FUEL OR WE DON’T FLY, AIRLINE TELLS PASSENGERS LONDON (Associated Press)

Airlines have already begun charging for food, drinks, seat assignments and baggage. Now one is demanding that passengers cough up extra cash for fuel. Hundreds of passengers travelling from India to Britain were stranded yesterday in Amritsar, India, by the charter airline Comtel, which was asking them to kick in money to cover the cost of fuel and fees. Passengers will not be allowed to leave for Britain unless they pay 10,000 rupees (about $200) each, Bhupinder Kandra, the airline’s majority shareholder, told the BBC. Some passengers said they were sent off the plane to cash machines in Vienna to raise the money. “We all got together, took our money out of purses – 130 pounds ($205),” said Reena Rindi, who was aboard with her daughter. “Children under two went free, my little one went free because she’s under two. If we didn’t have the money, they were making us go one by one outside, in Vienna, to get the cash out.” Amarjit Duggal told the BBC she

was flying from the Indian city of Amritsar on Comtel after scattering her mother’s ashes. Her father, sister and uncle were still in Amritsar and did not know when they would be able to return home. Channel 4 news said the crew told the passengers they would have to come up with 24,000 pounds ($38,000) between them. The plane then took off and reached
