NICKELBACK ACCEPTS CHARITY CHALLENGE
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Chad Kroeger, lead singer of Nickelback, said last night that the band will donate $50,000 to B.C. Children’s Hospital after a challenge from Chilliwack band Pardon My Striptease.
VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Members of a young B.C. rock group are shedding tears of joy after one of Canada’s top bands announced a $50,000 donation to B.C. Children’s Hospital, says a member of the group. Pardon My Striptease, a young band from Chilliwack had challenged Nickelback to match donations to the province’s children’s hospital if the song Pray (For LJ) surpasses the veterans’ When We Stand Together on the iTunes top-10 rock chart. Pray is dedicated to one-yearold Lilee-Jean Putt who is battling brain cancer at the hospital and is the only daughter of Pardon My Striptease’s lead singer Andrew Putt, 24, and his partner Chelsey Whittle, 24. Nickelback announced last night on its website that it would make a major donation to the hospital. “We’re moved by the efforts of Pardon My Striptease to raise money for BC Children’s Hospital and are happy and excited to take part,” said Chad Kroeger, lead singer of Nickelback posted on the website. “As such, Nickelback will be donating $50,000 to the BC Children’s Hospital...” “This is about helping LileeJean Putt and so many other children receiving world-class care at our own B.C. Children’s Hospital,” he added. “We are hopeful others will join us.” Brendan Woodroff, guitarist and backing vocals for Pardon My Striptease, said band mem-
bers were shocked by the major donation. “This is just above and beyond. It’s absolutely incredible. It’s more than we’ve ever expected,” he said. “It brought, you know, tears to everyone’s eyes in the band that, you know, we were able to raise so much awareness and attention to this place for all these kids and all these families that need the help.” The Fraser Valley band has already announced it would donate the money it raises from the single’s sale to the hospital. “Just because of how much they’ve done for us and for Lilee and seeing all the similar stories there,” said Putt. “And so they’ve made it easy as it can be on me and Chelsey, and we really need to help other families have that same experience in there.” Putt said the lives of he and his partner have been made a lot easier thanks to the hard work of a social worker at the hospital. That social worker has arranged almost everything, said Putt, including parking, hotel bookings, support programs, transportation, and counselling, allowing he and Chelsey to focus on Lilee-Jean. “But that costs a lot of money to be able to do that kind of stuff so they need that funding from somewhere and I think a lot of it is just from donations,” he said. Pray and When We Stand Together were battling for top spot on the iTunes top-10 rock chart last night.

OFFENDER PROGRAMS FALL SHORT, AUDITOR SAYS TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)
The B.C. government is struggling to deal with a record caseload of nearly 24,000 convicted offenders who are in the community, and it needs to do a better job of delivering programs to prevent them from reoffending. Those are key conclusions of B.C. Auditor General John Doyle’s latest report on the provincial corrections system. In addition to overcrowding in B.C. jails, nearly nine out of 10 convicted offenders in B.C. are not in custody, but are serving conditional sentences on house arrest or probation with court-imposed conditions. The auditor found that additional staff have not kept up with the caseload, which increased 28 per cent in the past six years. And only 35 per cent of interventions that are designed to reduce reoffending are ever completed. B.C. has four core programs. They focus on male offenders of spousal assault, other violent offenders, sex offenders and substance abusers. Doyle made eight recommendations, related to improved reporting on rates of re-offence and better record-keeping. He recommended a review of staffing levels but didn’t
prescribe what if any increase there should be to the current staff of 450 probation officers. The B.C. public safety ministry accepted all eight recommendations. In its response to the report, the community corrections division noted that probation officers deal with adult offenders, “many of whom are violent and high risk. “They deliver evidence-based programming such as the Relationship Violence Prevention Program,
which has been shown to reduce re-offending by up to 50 per cent.” NDP public safety critic Kathy Corrigan said it’s encouraging that a domestic violence program can have that much success, since domestic violence is the secondlargest source of of offences in B.C. after impaired driving. But Corrigan noted that Doyle found fewer than half of B.C.’s probation officers have completed the ministry’ .

In the wake of news highlighting hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on certain ICBC salaries and expenses, more than one person is calling for a closer look at the Crown corporation. The latest news reports come on the heels of ICBC applying to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) for a rate hike that would see most motorists pay about $30 more in premiums next year. ICBC president and CEO Jon Schubert said the rate increase is needed because of climbing claims costs, which rose $200 million in the first nine months of 2011. Bodily injury costs, which will hit $1.7 billion this year, are up $350 million from five years ago. But ICBC financial statements show Art Kirkner, a
SOUTH DELTA LEADER (Black Press)
Delta Secondary School teacher Robin Wait has been charged with sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident on Nov. 4. A young girl told police that day she had been sexually assaulted by an unknown adult near the school gym. Delta Police conducted an investigation, which led to charges being laid against the 43-year-old teacher. Wait has been charged with two counts of sexual interference of a person under 16, and two counts of sexual assault stemming from the Nov. 4 incident, and a previous alleged incident in May.
U.S. citizen hired as one of ICBC’s 15 vice-presidents in 2008 to help cut costs, received more than $188,000 for expenses claimed in 2010 – in addition to his $315,000 annual salary. In 2010, Kirkner’s salary and expenses totalled $504,505, the second-highest salary in the Crown corporation after Schubert, who pulled in $504,771. In reaction, Minister for Public Safety and Solicitor General Shirley Bond said Wednesday she has asked for a review into ICBC, which will start sometime in 2012. Consumers Association of Canada president Bruce Cran also suggested ICBC needs closer scrutiny. “I think we need an inquiry into what’s happening at ICBC,” he said. “I have great respect for the people who work there, but they overcharge for the cost of insurance and have been for years.”

Chilliwack’s caped crusaders are back at it – luring online child molesters out of the darkness into the glare of public scrutiny. RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth confirmed the same group of teens had lured another adult to a public place with online promises of sex with a fictitious young female on Dec. 4. And then they pounced with video cameras whirring to post the adult’s shame on YouTube for all to see. But apparently there was a police officer in the parking lot, who stopped the filming and took a 24-year-old man away in a squad car. Police said the teenage crusaders are not committing a criminal offense, so there’s little they can do – except warn them about the dangers of confronting these adult predators, and hope no harm comes to them “We’ve warned them and we’ve spoken to them,” Hollingsworth said. “We don’t condone this.” Last month, the group – two 17-year-olds, an 18-year-old and one 20-year-old – caused a media sensation when it was learned they were dressing up like super-heroes to out online child molesters. Police said at the time that the youngsters admitted they had “made a mistake” and understood the dangers of their activities.
Five clinics for people with sexually transmitted diseases will be closed next month by the Interior Health Authority. The last client visits will be on Dec. 30, according to Anne Clarotto, the IHA’s director for program and prevention services. Staff will be reassigned in January to other areas. She said the decision comes after reviewing the program in the five cities that offer it – Kamloops, Kelowna, Penticton, Grand Forks and Cranbrook. She said the move will allow IHA to “refocus public-health nurses into promotion and prevention.”

New RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson takes part in a change of command ceremony in Ottawa yesterday.
NEW RCMP CHIEF ALREADY MAKING CHANGES OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Bob Paulson was installed yesterday as 23rd commissioner of the RCMP and already he has instituted sweeping new measures aimed at sexual harassment, which alleged victims say plagues the national police force. Paulson says one of the first things he did after taking on the commissioner’s job last month was to call what he described as an “extraordinary” meeting of the top brass. “I called all my deputies together,” he said after
a colourful ceremony at an old hangar alongside Ottawa’s Pearson airport. “ “We’ve centralized the oversight and the management of the process. ... so that it affords me and my senior partners the ability to be able to track and monitor just what the cases are and how they’re moving on timelines.” He said he’s also taken measures to increase the number of female recruits at the RCMP training depot in Regina to 35 per cent of the contingent, well above the labour-market availability of 26 or 27 per cent. He also wants to see more women in the senior ranks. “My view is, we bring more women into our decision-making process at the executive level, we have a much more representative decision-making body in the force.” Several female RCMP officers have come forward since Cpl. Catherine Galliford went public in November with allegations of harassment and sexual harassment within the force in B.C.

JUSTICES QUERY ACCUSER’S NIQAB IN RAPE TRIAL OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
The lawyer for a woman who wants to wear a niqab while facing her accused rapists fielded pointed questions from justices of the
Fraser Valley
Supreme Court of Canada yesterday. The high court is trying to determine whether the face-covering would constitute a breach of the fundamental right of defendants to face their accusers as part of a fair trial. An Ontario woman identified only as N.S. says her Muslim faith dictates that she wear her niqab in public, including during the trial of two men who allegedly sexually assaulted her.

A niqab covers the entire face, leaving only the eyes visible, making it difficult for lawyers and juries to read any nuances in facial expressions during testimony. Justice Morris Fish joined others on the bench in suggesting there isn’t a single defence lawyer who would agree to allowing a witness to testify against their client without their face being clearly visible.
SHAFIA PAINTS HIMSELF AS LOVING, LENIENT DAD KINGSTON, Ont. (Canadian Press)
A man accused of killing his three daughters over family honour portrayed himself yesterday as a loving, benevolent and lenient father, even though his children were cruel to him. The picture Mohammad Shafia painted of himself as he took the stand at his murder trial was in stark contrast to evidence the jury has heard from Crown witnesses over the past six weeks. Court has heard that his children were afraid of him, begging authorities to remove them from the home, and that he cursed them as treacherous on wiretaps secretly recorded after their deaths. What Shafia meant, when he was recorded on the wiretaps saying that even if the girls came back to life 100 times he would “do the same again,” is that he would continue to give them good advice, he told court. When he was heard saying, “God’s curse on them,” he was really cursing himself, Shafia said. He also tried to explain what he meant when he said on the wiretaps, “May the devil (defecate) on their graves.” “To me it means that the devil would go out and check with them in graves,” Shafia said through an interpreter. “If they have done a good thing it would be good, if they did bad it would be up to God, what to do.” Shafia’s lawyer, Peter Kemp, suggested it was a common phrase in Dari, a dialect from Afghanistan and Shafia’s first language.
KENT CALLS FOR NEW CLIMATE DEAL OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Canada’s environment minister would like to see a new global treaty that binds all the world’s big polluters hammered out in the next few years. Peter Kent says 2015 would be a good target date – but a few years before or after that would work, too. Kent is in the South African city of Durban for UN climate talks. Countries are divided over whether to extend the Kyoto Protocol, which expires next year. The Conservative government says Canada will not extend its Kyoto commitment beyond next year.
LINK VOTE SUBSIDY TO FEMALE CANDIDATES: NDP’S DEWAR OTTAWA (Torstar)
New Democratic leadership candidate Paul Dewar wants to bring back the political subsidy the Conservative government axed after winning a majority this spring — this time with a feminist catch. He proposed yesterday that any party that nominated 50 per cent or more women candidates would receive the full $2-per-vote subsidy, parties nominating 40 to 49.9 per cent women candidates would receive $1.75 per vote and those who nominated between 30 and 39.9 per cent would receive $1.50 per vote.
JAPAN APOLOGIZES TO FORMER CANADIAN POWS OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Japan has apologized for the harsh mistreatment of Canadian prisoners of war after the disastrous Battle of Hong Kong in the Second World War. Some 1,975 Canadian troops were hastily sent to reinforce Allied troops defending Hong Kong, a British colony on China’s southern coast, as Japanese forces massed near the border in 1941. 267 captured men died in prison camps where they were subjected to what Canada calls “deliberate and systematic mistreatment at the hands of their captors.”

Britain’s Justice Secretary says murderers who single out disabled or transgender people as victims will face harsher sentences in the future. Ken Clarke said yesterday that those convicted of hate-related crimes against either group would face minimum 30-year jail sentences. Britain’s courts already impose harsh sentences for crimes motivated by racism or homophobia. Clarke said crimes motivated by hatred of specific groups “leave sections of society living in fear and at risk of unprovoked violence.”
President Dmitry Medvedev’s affection for going online has turned off-colour after an obscene characterization of a prominent opposition figure appeared on his Twitter account. The post describing popular opposition figure Alexei Navalny as a sheep engaging in an unprintable and unlikely sexual act sparked huge attention. The Kremlin says the message, a retweet of a posting by United Russia party ideologue and former parliament member Konstantin Rykov, was done by an unnamed member of the president’s technical staff. It added “the guilty will be punished.”
Jordan has asked the Arab League to be exempt from the bloc’s sanctions on Syria over concerns of the toll they will take on the kingdom’s already ailing economy, a senior government official said yesterday. The Arab League imposed economic sanctions on Syria last month to try to pressure Damascus to end its bloody crackdown on anti-government protesters. Syria is one of Jordan’s biggest Arab commercial partners, with bilateral trade estimated at $525 million in the first nine months of this year.
A leading international rights group urged authorities in Yemen yesterday to set 18 as the minimum age for marriage to improve girls’ opportunities for education and protect their human rights. Human Rights Watch said widespread child marriage in the Arab world’s poorest country jeopardizes Yemeni girls’ health and keeps them second-class citizens. A report by the New York-based group said approximately 14 per cent of girls in Yemen are married before the age 15, and 52 per cent are married before they are 18 years old.
New federal safety data shows texting while driving increased 50 per cent last year, despite a rush by states to ban the practice. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does an annual survey that watches drivers’ behaviour at selected intersections. The latest study caught less than 1 per cent texting or manipulating handheld devices. But it shows that activity increased to 0.9 per cent last year, up from 0.6 per cent the year before. The share of drivers speaking in headsets also increased, although hand-held cellphone use remained flat.

CONSERVATIVE LEADERS CLOSE RANKS AHEAD OF EU SUMMIT MARSEILLE, France (Associated Press)
Europe’s conservative political leaders yesterday warned of dire consequences if an 11th-hour EU summit failed to save the euro from the crush of crippling state debts. With the 17-nation eurozone’s fate hanging in the balance, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy told a gathering of the centre-right European People’s Party that they needed to agree to tougher rules on national budgets. Sarkozy issued a grand call for action, and many leaders Nicolas Sarkozy admitted the situation was urgent, but it remained unclear how the negotiations today would proceed. “Never has Europe been so necessary, and so much in danger,” the French president said. Sarkozy and Merkel will bring to the EU summit a proposal to have European countries balance their budgets and to automatically sanction rule-breakers. They want to enshrine the tougher budget oversight in a treaty, either by changing the existing EU treaty or creating a new one for the 17 eurozone nations that other EU members could join as well.

U.S. PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN ENTERS AGGRESSIVE PHASE
WASHINGTON (Associated Press)
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has gone on the offensive against former House of Representatives leader Newt Gingrich, airing an ad that boasts of his “steadiness and constancy” while inviting comparisons with his opponent’s multiple marriages and late conversion to Catholicism. Romney also dispatched his surrogates yesterday to criticize Gingrich’s leadership ability and commitment to conservative principles. After months of coasting at the top of the Republican field, Romney’s new tactics reflect a campaign that has been shaken by Gingrich, who has amassed a sizable lead in Iowa polling with a month remaining until the state casts the first ballots in a nationwide nominating process to pick a challenger to President Barack Obama. Gingrich’s rise reflects Republicans’ growing belief that his bare-knuckle style has a better chance of defeating Obama. The president’s approval rating has plummeted over his handling of the economy. Voters are in a sour mood as an 8.6 per cent unemployment rate and home mortgage foreclosures dog the economy three years after the nation’s meltdown in the last months of George W. Bush’s presidency.

ABIGAIL BRESLIN GROWING UP ON SCREEN TORONTO (Torstar)
It’s been nearly six years since Abigail Breslin stole hearts and netted an Oscar nomination as idealistic child beauty queen Olive Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine. The poised and pretty 15-year-old who welcomed a reporter into a Yorkville hotel suite earlier this month in impossibly high-heeled Alice and Olivia boots and a cute crop top over an AllSaints lace skirt bore little resemblance to sweetly earnest Olive. Breslin is growing up and doing much of that onscreen, defiantly flashing a canary yellow bra to her horrified mom (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) and sharing her first cinema kiss in Garry Marshall’s star-studded rom-com New Year’s Eve, opening today. She plays Hailey, a teen who has no desire to stay home with Mom watching the countdown on TV with hats and noisemakers. Her plans involve the ball drop in Times Square and celebrating with her friends, including a special boy (Jake T. Austin). Breslin’s next role will complete her transition to young adult actress, co-starring in The Class Project as one of two Mississauga, Ont. sisters who killed their mother, drugging her with booze and pills, then drowning her in the bathtub, hoping to pass it off as an accident. Based on the book by the Toronto Star’s Bob Mitchell and filmed in Winnipeg, the movie is
due next year. It stars Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia) as the other sister and Oscar winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) as their mother. “It’s a much darker movie,” said Breslin. That’s not the case with New Year’s Eve, where, as with 2010’s Valentine’s Day, Marshall brings a huge cast of Hollywood luminaries together for a variety of intertwining stories that take place Dec. 31 in New York City.

EYE OF STORM DIRECTOR UNSURE ON CASTING HIS DAUGHTER
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
The Eye of the Storm stars Geoffrey Rush, Charlotte Rampling and Judy Davis – a blue-chip ensemble that would be beyond the wildest dreams of most filmmakers. But there was another cast member that director Fred Schepisi was initially uncertain about: his own daughter. “If you’re less than brilliant, you’re going to get killed, you’re not going to be treated as fairly as a normal actress. So it’s dangerous for me, dangerous for her, dangerous for the film, if you’re no good.” In his heart, Schepisi believed his daughter, Alexandra, would indeed be a good fit for the film, about adult siblings Basil and Dorothy (Rush and Davis) who return home to visit their ailing mother (Rampling). She plays a nurse. The director had the casting crew tape about two dozen actresses, narrowing the list to 10 and then four. He was still unsure. “I thought, I don’t believe I’m biased towards my daughter, but I am a father, I know enough about the world to know you have blind sides, so I showed it to all my heads of departments, creative team, other actors, my other producers and they all said: ‘If you don’t use Alex just ‘cause she’s your daughter, you’re an idiot.’”

RED CROSS: GAMERS WON’T BE PROSECUTED FOR WAR CRIMES GENEVA (Associated Press)
Gamers worried their actions on the virtual battlefield could land them at the Hague war crimes tribunal can relax. The International Committee of the Red Cross says media reports that it is investigating whether the Geneva Conventions apply to video games are false. The Swiss-based humanitarian group assured gamers yesterday that “serious violations of the laws of war can only be committed in real-life situations.” The ICRC says it is nevertheless interested in working with video game makers to promote a better understanding of international humanitarian law because some companies also develop war simulations for armed forces.
On her new TV special, Barbara Walters gets up close and personal with Donald Trump. Maybe too personal. “We started with his hair,” confides Walters. “He said, ‘Pull it and you can see that it’s not a hairpiece.’ So I did. And I still think it’s a hairpiece.” Trump – the follically perplexing reality star, businessman and sometime presidential candidate – is on Walters’ list of The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2011, which airs on Wednesday. It’s the 19th compilation of the year’s most prominent names in entertainment, sports and popular culture. Walters says she questioned Trump on his year of political adventures, which included commandeering the “birther” bandwagon by stoking doubt about President Barack Obama’s U.S. citizenship, and by teasing voters with the prospect of his stepping into the presidential race as a Republican candidate. “But he still is talking about

as an independent.’” Other “Fascinating People” include Simon Cowell, Katy Perry and New York Yankees star Derek Jeter, who tells Walters that he’d like to own an athletic team. “I told him, ‘You’re making a lot of money. You could buy one,’” reports Walters. “And he says, ‘Great. I’ll buy one with you.’ We made a deal.” Also on board are Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, from ABC’s comedy hit Modern Family, and the Kardashians. In profiling the Kardashians, Walters says she plays a game with them, quizzing them on who is the smartest, the nicest, the one Mom likes best. Speaking of sisters Kim, Kourtney and Khloe, Walters offers an explanation for all the popularity that’s been showered on celebrities who readily admit they have no talents worth celebrating. “They’re pretty women, they’re glamorous and they don’t know private from public,” Walters says. “And they’re part of a family – one for all and all for one – that people relate to.”

CANADIANS DON’T WANT CREDIT CARD SURCHARGES TORONTO (Canadian Press)
A consumer group survey suggests fewer than ďŹ ve per cent of Canadian credit card holders believe retailers should be able to charge them extra for using plastic. But the poll by the Consumers Association of Canada also suggests few Canadians are aware that the federal competition watchdog is pushing to have consumers pay a usage surcharge that is currently being paid for by retailers. The Competition Bureau is taking on rules made by credit card companies that charge retailers between 1.5 and three per cent per credit card transaction – but prevent them from jacking up prices to offset the extra amount. Retailers have applauded the bureau’s move, but consumer groups argue removing the rules would allow individual businesses to impose unfair charges. The consumers association says more than four out of ďŹ ve Canadians are opposed to the proposed changes.
BOC WARNS OF INCREASING RISK FROM EUROPE OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
The Bank of Canada is warning that Canadian mortgage holders are vulnerable to a potential shock from the economy as global ďŹ nancial conditions deteriorate rapidly. The central bank’s semi-annual ďŹ nancial stability review says bluntly that Canadians need to start worrying about the worsening debt mess in Europe, and its ability to hit home hard. Many Canadian households who have been piling up debt during the low-interest environment might ďŹ nd themselves unable to make their payments. The bank says it is so concerned about household debt, which is at record levels and is continuing to rise, that it is advising the government to keep a close eye on the situation. It notes it hasn’t been a year since Ottawa tightened rules for obtaining mortgages.

CANUCKS COME BACK, BEAT CANADIENS IN SHOOTOUT
MONTREAL (Canadian Press)
Cody Hodgson scored in regulation time and again in a shootout as the streaking Vancouver Canucks opened a five-game road trip with a comeback 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens last night. Hodgson was the only scorer in the shootout after the Canucks (17-10-1) erased a 3-0 deficit to post their eighth win in nine games. Rookie defencemen Frederic St-Denis and Raphael Diaz and forward Erik Cole spotted Montreal a 3-0 lead by the 2:20 mark of the second period, but Vancouver stormed back with goals shorthanded by Mason Raymond, 4-on-4 by Hodgson and on a power play by Sami Salo. The Canadiens (11-11-7) lost in a shootout for the third time in their last four games and for a second game in a row. Montreal is 1-5 in shootouts this season. Montreal captain Brian Gionta left in the third period with an injury and did not return. Salo tied the game with 4:40 left in regulation time on a blast from the point after Alexandre Burrows drew a cross-checking penalty on Lars Eller. It was showdown between the Canadiens’ Carey Price, a B.C. native, and Roberto Luongo, who is from Montreal. Price was a standout early and Luongo had
strong moments later on as Canucks held a 31-23 shot advantage. The Canucks outplayed Montreal through most of the first two periods but found themselves in a hole when Luongo let in three of his first nine shots. It started with two near identical goals as St-Denis and Diaz. Both threw wrist shots from the point through traffic to score in the opening period. At the other end of the ice, Price stood on his head as Montreal killed a Vancouver two-man advantage for 1:26, facing eight shots in all over the two penalties. Only 2:20 into the second period, Cole blocked a Salo pass at the point, skated down the right wing and scored on a soft wrist shot. Raymond, in only his third game since returning from a back injury suffered during the Stanley Cup final, got one back shorthanded as he took Jannik Hansen’s pass and beat Price with a wrist shot at 8:37. It was the fifth short-handed goal allowed this season by Montreal, and the first the Canucks have scored. Raymond helped close the gap and he skated into the Montreal zone with the teams each down a man. His shot was blocked by the defence, but Hodgson followed with a goal on a wrist shot from the right circle 4:24 into the third.

FLYERS BEAT CROSBY-LESS PENGUINS 3-2 PHILADELPHIA (Associated Press)
Danny Briere, Wayne Simmonds and Scott Hartnell each scored to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins last night. Penguins star Sidney Crosby missed the first of two games as a precaution following a collision with teammate Chris Kunitz in Monday night’s loss to Boston. Doctors told Crosby there was no indication he suffered another concussion. The 24-year-old suffered from concussion-like symptoms that sidelined him for more than 10 months this year. He could skate on Friday. The Penguins could have used him. James Neal and Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh. The Flyers built a 3-0 lead and held on a night after they rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat Buffalo in overtime. The Penguins aren’t concerned that Crosby will miss much more than two games following his latest hard hit. The 2007 Hart Trophy winner has two goals and 10 assists in eight games since his return. He could be available when the Penguins host Detroit next Tuesday. The Penguins will re-evaluate Crosby over the next few days. Crosby visited with his medical team on Wednesday and underwent testing that ruled out a concussion. “He’s having today off and anticipates working out (Friday),” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. “That’s where he’s at right now.”

OWNERS, PLAYERS SIGN NEW NBA CBA NEW YORK (Associated Press)
NBA basketball is back. Calling it a “new beginning in a way,” commissioner David Stern announced that owners and players ratified a new collective bargaining agreement yesterday, the final step to ending the five-month lockout and paving the way for training camps and free agency to open today. The 10-year deal promises owners savings of perhaps a quarter billion dollars a year but largely leaves intact the soft salary cap system that the players fought hard to maintain. Stern and deputy commissioner Adam Silver announced the deal during a press conference, putting an end to nearly two years of difficult negotiations that resulted in the second shortened season in NBA history. A 66-game schedule will begin on Christmas and run through April 26, forcing every team to play on three straight nights at least once. Owners approved the deal, which allows either side to opt out after six years, by a 25-5 vote. The players’ association said 86 per cent of the more than 200 players who voted electronically approved the deal. Owners also agreed to an expanded revenue sharing plan, and Stern called the agreement of both plans “a watershed moment” for the league.

Three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols agreed yesterday to a $254 million US, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, a person familiar with the deal said. Pujols’ contract is only the third in baseball to break the $200 million barrier, following Alex Rodriguez’s $252 million, 10-year deal with Texas before the 2001 season and A-Rod’s
$275 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees before the 2008 season. In addition, the Angels agreed to a five-year contract with C.J. Wilson, a deal worth about $75 million, a person familiar with that deal said. Pujols has spent all 11 of his major league seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, becoming a franchise icon second only to Stan Musial. Albert Pujols St. Louis also offered him a 10-year deal, but he chose to leave the Gateway City for California. “He left a pretty good impact over there, I don’t think fans will soon

JERUSALEM TO CLOSE WALKWAY LEADING TO DISPUTED SHRINE JERUSALEM (Associated Press)
Jerusalem municipal officials said they will shut down a walkway to a contested shrine at the heart of the IsraeliPalestinian conflict, a move liable to touch off a new round of violence between Muslims and Jews. Any work in the area around the Old City compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary draws fierce condemnation and sometimes violence from Palestinians, many of whom suspect Israel wants to harm Muslim shrines. An official with the Muslim clerical body that runs the complex warned that protests were liable to break out this time, too. The municipality says the wooden walkway leading to one of the hilltop site’s gates – built as a temporary structure after a centuries-old ramp was damaged in a 2004 snowstorm – is a fire hazard and structurally unsound and must be replaced. In a letter released yesterday, Jerusalem city engineer Shlomo Eshkol informed authorities of his plan to block access to the walkway to all but security forces. The shutdown could take place immediately after a one-week public comment period.
Indian authorities have filed charges against Tibetan Buddhism’s third most important leader following an investigation into $1.35 million in cash discovered at his headquarters in northern India, police said yesterday. The money was found last January during a police raid on the Karmapa’s monastery. It was in nearly two dozen currencies, and the Karmapa’s aides said it had been donated by his followers, who came from all over the world. But the amount of cash, which included a large sum of Chinese yuan, concerned police, who said the sums were too large to be merely from donations. The raid on the Gyuto Monastery was unprecedented and particularly surprising since the Karmapa, Ugyen Thinley Dorje, is revered by Tibetans and Buddhists. India has gone to great lengths to provide asylum to Buddhist leaders who have fled Tibet, including the Dalai Lama. The Karmapa, 26, is seen as one of the Dalai Lama’s potential successors as the leader of Tibetan Buddhism.
On Wednesday, police filed charges against the Karmapa and three of his followers in a local court at the end of the investigation, said Sumedha Diwedi, a superintendent of police. The court will soon examine the evidence submitted by the police and decide whether the Karmapa and his followers should be tried on the charges. $1.35M A spokesman for the

Tibetan government-in-exile said he was sure no Indian laws had deliberately been broken. While the Karmapa was charged with conspiracy and knowledge of undeclared money, the three followers face the additional charges of cheating and forgery of documents. If convicted, the Karmapa faces up to two years in prison, and his followers up to 10 years.
