Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely with a recurrence of concussion-like symptoms, the Penguins said yesterday.
The Conservative government has pulled Canada out of the world’s only binding climate treaty. “We are invoking Canada’s legal right to formally withdraw from Kyoto,” Environment Minister Peter Kent said yesterday outside the House of Commons. “This decision formalizes what we’ve said since 2006, that we will not implement the Kyoto Protocol.” Canada signed Kyoto in the late 1990s, but neither the current Conservative government nor their Liberal predecessors met targets. The Tories have instead set a less stringent goal to lower greenhouse gases that is in line with the United States. The environment minister said the move saves Canada $14 billion in penalties for not achieving its Kyoto targets. New Democrat environment critic Megan Leslie disputed that dollar figure. She said there are no penalties under Kyoto, and pulling out saves the Tories from having to report that Canada is falling short of its Kyoto targets. “It’s like we’re the kid in school who knows they’re gonna fail the class, so we have to drop it before that actually happens,” Leslie said. Kent said Canada will now look ahead to a new global deal that forces all countries to lower greenhouse-gas emissions.

OCCUPY VANCOUVER PORT PROTEST FIZZLES VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
A plan to blockade Vancouver’s port by Occupy protesters on a West Coast day of action fizzled when the B.C. Federation of Labour denounced the demonstration. Protesters carried a large banner reading “Stop Port Expansion” spanning three lanes of traffic but only about 80 demonstrators straggled behind it yesterday. Occupy spokesman Maxim Winther said the federation’s lack of support means the movement has more work to do. “Regarding turnout today, I think it’s clear we need more time to educate the public and educate each other on what these issues are and to really find actions and issues that do galvanize the public.” At its peak in Vancouver several weeks ago, the Occupy Vancouver encampment in the city’s downtown drew thousands of people, including many members of the B.C. Federation of Labour. But the federation issued a statement against the port protest before it started. “The B.C. Federation of Labour does not support this action, or
any action by the Occupy Vancouver group at Vancouver area ports that seeks to prevent our members from carrying out their assigned duties and working safely,” the statement said. The group carrying banners and placards yesterday walked a few blocks between a park and an entrance to the port. Several dozen police officers, standing elbow to elbow, stopped protesters at the entrance while
two police wagons were stationed nearby if needed. Winther said many of the participants wanted to demonstrate their collective power and shut down the ports for the planned 12 hours, but the federation’s statement changed their plans. They were protesting because workers’ rights are under attack, with union busting and back-towork legislation both in the United States and in Canada, Winther said.

The civil claim against Knapp alleges he was negligent, and this caused or contributed to the collision.
BEAR CUB TRANQUILIZED IN DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
A little bear caused a big reaction when it showed up in downtown Vancouver yesterday. The black bear cub got caught in a garbage truck that had picked up a load in North Vancouver before driving to Vancouver. Police and conservation officers were called when the bear was spotted on top of the truck, which had stopped in a busy area near the city’s main post office. The cub was tranquilized and taken away to be released back into the wild.
DRIVER DIES AFTER CAR PLUNGES INTO RESERVOIR KAMLOOPS (Kamloops This Week)
A Kamloops woman is dead after the car she was driving plunged into a reservoir in the Okanagan, according to police. Police said emergency crews were called to a reservoir on McKinley Road in Kelowna just after 1 p.m. yesterday, after another motorist watched a grey Buick sedan slide off the road and down an embankment before crashing into the frozen water. The woman was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital, where she later died. Her name has not been released.

MAN ACCUSED OF MURDER WALKS FREE ALEX COOPER (Revelstoke Times Review)
For Stacey Thur, it was like Aug. 4 all over again. That day she learned her 20-year-old son Daniel Levesque died following an altercation in a Victoria apartment the night before. Last Friday, a little more than four months later, she learned Joshua Bredo, the man charged with second degree murder in connection with Levesque’s death, was being released from custody after the charges against him were stayed due to lack of evidence. “It saddens me but there’s nothing I can do,” Thur said. “It’s completely beyond my control.” Thur was told the news by two detectives from the Victoria police department, who travelled to Revelstoke to speak to her in person. the long process of a murder trial. The investigators had warned her that it would take a long time. Still, she wasn’t prepared for the news she received. “In my heart I most certainly do not believe it is over, in good ways and in bad,” she said. Victoria police said Bredo could yet be charged again for the crime. “Investigators are continuing the investigation, but (right now) they don’t have enough evidence to keep him in custody,” said spokesperson Const. Mike Russell. News of Levesque’s death shocked the community of Revelstoke and close to 1,000 people attended a celebration of his life at the community centre. He was described as a talented musician and poet, loving son and a great friend who would make people laugh.

Kenney said it’s not only a question of “deep principle” for someone to show their face while taking the oath in front of their fellow citizens, it’s also a matter of legal concern. “I don’t know how we can verify that someone whose face is covered is actually taking the oath that the law requires of them,” Kenney said. “This is a public act of witness in front of your fellow citizens, in front of the law – and you should be willing to show who you are.” Kenney said he received complaints from citizens, MPs and citizenship judges to the effect that it’s difficult to ensure individuals whose faces are covered are actually taking the oath. He said those concerns prompted him to raise the issue during a recent meeting of citizenship judges in Ottawa. “I asked (the judges) if this was a widespread problem and I saw a lot of them said that it was,” he said.
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and the country’s budget watchdog still don’t see eye to eye on the deficit. In a new report, Parliamentary Budget Officer Kevin Page says the country is still facing a structural deficit that will persist past 2016-17. Page says while the government says all the deficit is cyclical – due to the under-performing economy – he believes about $10 billion on average is structural. A structural deficit remains despite the ups and downs of the economy and is more difficult to erase.
TORONTO ZOO’S SAME-SEX PENGUINS SEPARATED TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Toronto Zoo officials say same-sex penguins Buddy and Pedro have been officially separated and Buddy has mated with a female. Pedro has yet to get lucky, but officials say it’s not for a lack of trying. Zoo workers had described their bond as social – not sexual – saying the two simply had each other’s backs and preferred each other’s company to that of other penguins. Buddy, who is 21, had a female mate for 10 years and produced some offspring before his partner died.

Mikhail Prokhorov, one of Russia’s richest tycoons and New Jersey Nets basketball team owner, says he will challenge Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in next March’s presidential election. While he was cautious not to cross Putin’s path in the past, Prokhorov may pose a serious challenge to Putin, whose authority has been dented by the Dec. 4 parliamentary election and massive protests against vote fraud. Putin’s hand has been weakened by a significant drop of support for his party in the recent vote. Opposition parties and election monitors say that even that result was inflated because of fraud.
Italian financial market jitters worsened yesterday, as workers angry about government austerity reforms went on strike and held nationwide rallies while investors turned skeptical about an EU pact to save the euro. Some Fiat auto plants were idled and a performance at La Scala opera house in Milan was cancelled as unions kicked off the first of days of walkouts and demonstrations against the spending cuts and tax increases the government is seeking to restore investor confidence in the country’s financial future.
A private investigator working for Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World tabloid did not delete voicemails from the phone of a missing girl, a police lawyer said yesterday – casting new light on the critical event that sparked Britain’s phone hacking scandal. The tabloid allegedly listened to and interfered with messages left for 13-year-old Milly Dowler in 2002. The scandal exploded after the Guardian newspaper reported in July that the News of the World had eavesdropped on the murdered girl’s voicemails after she disappeared and may have hampered the police search by deleting messages.

NEW EU PACT FACES U.K. CONCERNS LONDON (Associated Press)
British Prime Minister David Cameron warned that Europe’s new fiscal pact, aimed at fixing the euro, faces significant political hurdles, while investors and ratings agencies said the deal was insufficient to fix the continent’s debt problems. Cameron, who was the only leader among the 27 European Union members to refuse last week to consider a plan to tighten budget controls, warned the deal could clash with existing EU rules and that it could take months of negotiations to sort out the conflicts. As the political rift between Britain and euro countries created uncertainty about “No one quite knows the deal’s implewhere this new mentation, ratings organization outside agencies Moody’s and the European Fitch warned it did not treaties will go, and even properly address the what powers it will problem of lowering existing seek and how it will debt. act.” Stocks and the euro fell – British PM sharply as market confiDavid Cameron dence in the plan – and Europe’s ability to end the crisis – ebbed. The U.K.’s refusal of the new European fiscal pact threatens to leave Britain isolated on the fringes of the EU, while the 17 countries which use the euro currency – and almost all their neighbours – agree to consider a new pact to enforce deeper political and fiscal bonds. “This is new territory and does raise important issues which we will want to explore with the ‘euro plus’ countries,” Cameron told the House of Commons, referring to the block of 17 eurozone nations, and nine others who say they’ll either sign up to or consider the new pact. Cameron told legislators that unlike a new EU treaty, the plan for the pact doesn’t “carry the same dangers
for Britain – nonetheless, it is not without risks.” “I think we are going to see now, frankly, a period of great change in Europe. No one quite knows where this new organization outside the European treaties will go, and what powers it will seek and how it will act,” Cameron said. Britain’s government is worried that the new European pact would overlap with the existing EU treaty. In particular, Cameron’s office said it was not clear how EU institutions such as the European Commission, the EU’s executive based in Brussels, could be used under two different, possibly competing, regimes.

TEHRAN, Iran (Associated Press)
Iranian experts are in the final stages of recovering data from the U.S. surveillance drone captured by the country’s armed forces, state TV reported yesterday. Tehran has flaunted the capture of the RQ-170 Sentinel, a top-secret aircraft with stealth technology, as a victory for Iran and a defeat for the United States in a complicated intelligence and technological battle. President Barack Obama said yesterday that the U.S. was pressing Iran to return the aircraft, which U.S. officials say malfunctioned and was not brought down by Iran. But a senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said on Sunday that the country would not send it back, adding that “no one returns the symbol of aggression.” Iranian lawmaker Parviz Sorouri, a member of the parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee, said yesterday the extracted information will be used to file a lawsuit against the United States for what he called the “invasion” by the unmanned aircraft. Sorouri also claimed that Iran has the capability to reproduce the drone through reverse engineering, but he did not elaborate. State TV broadcast images Thursday of Iranian military officials inspecting what it identified as the drone. Iranian state media have said the unmanned spy aircraft was detected and brought down over the country’s east, near the border with Afghanistan.

U.S. President Barack Obama heralded the end of the divisive Iraq war yesterday, and warned Iraq’s neighbours that the United States would remain a major player in the region even as it brings its troops home. “Our strong presence in the Middle East endures,” Obama said. “And the United States will never waver in the defence of our allies, our partners and our interests.” Obama said other Speaking after a nations must not morning of meetings interfere with Iraq’s with Iraqi Prime Minsovereignty. While he influence Baghdad. stopped short of mentioning any countries by name, U.S. officials are closely watching how neighbouring Iran may seek to influence Baghdad after U.S. troops withdraw. Early signs of how Iraq may orient itself could come from how it handles troubles in Syria, where the United Nations says 5,000 people have been killed in a government crackdown on protesters. While Obama has called for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down, Iraq has been more circumspect, with al-Maliki warning of civil war if Assad falls and abstaining from Arab League votes suspending Syria’s membership and imposing sanctions. Those
positions align Iraq more closely with Iran, a key Syrian ally. Obama said he and al-Maliki were both deeply concerned by the Syrian government’s assault on its own people. And Obama said he was confident that the Iraqi leader’s approach to dealing with Syria was based on his own nation’s interests. “Even if there are tactical disagreements I have no doubt those decisions are made based on what’s best for Iraq, not considerations of what Iran would like to see,” Obama said. Al-Maliki’s trip came as the last American troops were preparing to leave Iraq ahead of a Dec. 31 deadline. Just 6,000 U.S. forces remain, down from a high of 170,000 at the war’s peak in 2007.

U.S. TOP COURT JUMPS INTO FIGHT OVER IMMIGRATION
WASHINGTON (Associated Press)
The U.S. Supreme Court agreed yesterday to rule on a politically charged law in Arizona targeting illegal immigrants. The immigration case stems from the Obama administration’s furious legal fight against a patchwork of state laws aimed at stopping illegal immigration. Arizona and other states say the federal government is not doing enough to address illegal immigration and that states on the border with Mexico are suffering disproportionately. The administration of President Barack Obama argues that regulating immigration is the job of the federal government, not states. Similar laws in Alabama, South Carolina and Utah also are facing administration lawsuits. Private groups are suing over immigration measures adopted in Georgia and Indiana. The court now has three politically charged cases on its election-year calendar. The other two are Obama’s health care overhaul and new electoral maps for Texas’ legislature and congressional delegation. In taking on the Arizona case, the justices said they will review a federal appeals court ruling that blocked tough provisions in the state’s law. One of those requires that police, while enforcing other laws, question people’s immigration status if officers suspect they are in the country illegally.

OPRAH VISITS HAITI UNDER TIGHT SECURITY PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Associated Press)
Martelly said he intended to meet with her. Lionel Lafortune, who was among several journalists trying to cover Winfrey, was detained by a guard as he took photos. An Associated Press journalist saw a private security guard grab Lafortune, who works for the newspaper Haiti Progress, and drag him into a small police station at the camp, where officers demanded that he erase the memory card from his camera and refused to let him leave.
Oprah Winfrey toured an encampment for Haitians displaced by a massive 2010 earthquake under tight security yesterday, with a local photographer detained as he tried to cover the event. Winfrey, escorted by security guards, walked among the tents with actor Sean Penn, who helped create an aid group that provides support to people who live in the encampment. Winfrey said Penn’s efforts will be featured in an upcoming program on her Oprah Winfrey Network. “This is part of the next chapter, MAKING A going around the world to see interesting and fascinating cases of profound DIFFERENCE examples of what can be done to make a difference in the world,” Winfrey told reporters at the encampment. Penn said he welcomed the interest of “the world’s most elegant woman” and expected it would help Haiti. The camp where his group works was built on a former country club golf course and has been home to thousands of people since the earthquake left much of the Haitian capital in ruins. “Everybody who has spent time in Haiti knows how important it is for the world to see what is going on here. ... We really appreciate that she’s here with us,” ASSOCIATED PRESS Penn said. Her representatives have not provided any ing 2010 earthquake at what was once a golf club details about her itinerary, though President Michel in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

CHRISTIAN BALE IN CHINA TO PROMOTE PROSTITUTE FILM
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Associated Press)
Maybe it was inevitable that whoever landed the lead in the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo would become Sweden’s next big export. Yet with or without a blockbuster role, Noomi Rapace always felt she would break out beyond the borders of her homeland. Two and a half years after the debut of Dragon Tattoo, the ďŹ rst of her three eyepopping turns as late author Stieg Larsson’s untamed heroine, Rapace has stormed into Hollywood in Robert Downey Jr.’s latest Sherlock Holmes adventure and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Rapace felt right at home among Downey’s ensemble for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, while she grew up on Alien, Thelma & Louise and other ďŹ lms from Scott. “Ridley Scott is one of my heroes since as long as I can remember. I kind of actually think that he saved me sometimes, because I always felt like an outsider in Sweden. I didn’t feel Swedish. I always felt like something is different with me,â€? Rapace said. “The Swedish people are quite

Christian Bale was in Beijing yesterday to promote a movie about 13 young prostitutes set during Japanese army’s brutal rampaging of China’s wartime capital, known as the “Rape of Nanking.â€? The Oscar winner plays an American priest in the ďŹ lm The Flowers of War, directed by one of China’s best known modern directors, Zhang Yimou. It is an adaptation of a Chinese-language novel by writer Yan Geling about 13 sex workers in Nanjing who volunteer to replace students as escorts for invading Japanese soldiers. The American priest leads a church that shelters prostitutes and young female students during the invasion. Historians say the 1937 massacre in the city now known as Nanjing resulted in the slaughter of at least 150,000 civilians. Bale praised the ability of the actresses to act fearful and upset. “Poor girls, they were always crying their eyes out,â€? he said. “When I ďŹ rst arrived, I felt: this is just not good. I don’t like that – the girls having to be upset for 10 hours a day ... But they were actually really good actresses because they could ... stop and kind of go ‘hahaha, we can be like that’ and I was so happy to see that.â€?

never imagine I was going to end up with these people and doing movies with the best people in the world.â€? Rapace appeared in her ďŹ rst movie at age seven while living in Iceland before her family moved back to Sweden, and she has been acting steadily for the past decade. But it was her performance as computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo that was her exit visa. All three ďŹ lms adapted from Larsson’s bestsellers became worldwide hits, with Hollywood quickly jumping in for David Fincher’s English-language remake of Dragon Tattoo, opening just days after Sherlock Holmes. The world of Lisbeth – with her tattoos, piercings and anarchic spirit – was not unknown to Rapace, who went on her own rebellious tear in her early teens. “There was a gap there when I was not into acting and I was against everything. First, I was into doing judo and kung fu. Then I was drinking a lot,â€? Rapace said. “So I kind of lost track for a while, then I came back, I pulled myself together and I decided when I was 15 that I’m going to get sober and I’m going to become an actress.â€?

FOOD PRICE HIKES TO SLOW IN 2012: RESEARCHERS GUELPH, Ont. (Canadian Press)
A new study says Canadians may find some reprieve at the supermarket cash register next year as the rise in food prices slows down. In a report released yesterday, two University of Guelph professors say prices for food will inch ahead by less than the current inflation rate. The 2012 Food Price Index forecast estimates that general food prices will rise about two per cent at most. The cost of meat products will jump about three per cent, compared to a rise of about five per cent in 2011, while the price of fresh vegetables will go up one to three per cent in 2012, versus a jump of 10 per cent this year. Also, baked goods prices are expected to rise three per cent, from seven per cent this year. Food prices have been on the upswing in recent years as raw materials prices surge affected by soaring costs for fuel used to transport goods.
GREEK MINISTER VOWS TO CUT SPENDING ATHENS (Associated Press)
Greece will cut spending further but it won’t impose new taxes, its finance minister said yesterday, adding that talks with international debt inspectors on a second rescue package were at a “difficult and critical” stage. Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos spoke after meeting in Athens with officials from the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund on how to keep his debt-strapped nation afloat. Greeks have already seen several rounds of tax increases in more than two years under austerity measures. Salaries and pensions have also been slashed as the country struggled to meet the terms of its first international bailout, granted in May 2010. ADD YOUR

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby warms up for a game in Montreal on November 26
CROSBY OUT INDEFINITELY WITH CONCUSSION-LIKE SYMPTOMS
PITTSBURGH (Canadian Press)
Sidney Crosby is back on the shelf again – his comeback stalled indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms. “Frustrating, I don’t think that even describes it,” Crosby told reporters. Still the Pittsburgh Penguins star looked for positives yesterday, saying he is feeling “much, much better” than he did after being levelled by big hits in successive games Jan. 1 and Jan. 5 that triggered his 10-month absence from the game. He also said he felt worse only a few weeks before the Penguins opened training camp in mid-September. “It’s much different than previously going through that stuff,” Crosby said. “I’m way better off than I was dealing with this stuff 10 months ago or whatever it was.” Still it’s a setback for the NHL’s biggest star, only three weeks since making a spectacular comeback. “I just figured it was better to be cautious here and not take any chances. That’s kind of where I’m at right now,” Crosby said. “I’m not (feeling) bad. And I’m not happy about watching. But I’ve got to make sure with these sort of things that I’m careful.” Crosby had two goals and 10 assists through eight games, and his comeback appeared to be a major suc-
cess until he experienced headaches following a 3-1 loss to Boston on Dec. 5. After sitting out a pair of road games as a precaution, Crosby was expected to return to practice yesterday. But instead he sat out the training session and told reporters after that he won’t practise or play until he is symptom-free. He wouldn’t guess when that might be. While Crosby absorbed several hits against the Bruins, including an elbow to the head from David Krejci, none appeared to be worrisome. He passed a concussion test last Tuesday, then went through a full practice Wednesday. Crosby missed 61 games over the second half of last season and the first quarter of this season with a concussion that resulted from punishing hits in successive games Jan. 1 and Jan. 5. But, unlike his 20-game layoff to start this season, Crosby is experiencing headaches and other symptoms. He will miss a third consecutive game, and his 23rd this season, tonight against Detroit. It was only three weeks ago yesterday that Crosby lit up the Islanders – and the NHL – with a stunning two-goal, two-assist comeback performance in his first game since Jan. 5.

PARISE, HENRIQUE LEAD NJ PAST TAMPA TAMPA, Fla. (Associated Press)
Zach Parise and Adam Henrique both had a goal and two assists to lead the New Jersey Devils past the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4 last night. Parise, Henrique and Ilya Kovalchuk each scored in the second period as the Devils broke open a tie game after both teams scored twice in the first. Petr Sykora and Dainius Zubrus had the other goals for New Jersey, which had lost five of seven. Steve Stamkos had two goals for the Lightning, losers of seven of eight. Steve Downie and Blair Jones also scored, while Tampa Bay goalie Dwayne Roloson was replaced by Mathieu Garon early in the second after allowing three goals on 12 shots. Parise scored 56 seconds into the second on an odd-man rush to make it 3-2. After Kovalchuk had a breakaway goal at 5:42, Henrique gave the Devils the three-goal advantage during a short-handed two-on-none with 6:37 to go in the period. Parise assisted on two of the second-period goals. Stamkos had a power-play goal at 9:29 of the third, and added his 18th goal of the season in the final minute with the Lightning net empty. The centre had not scored a goal in his previous five games. Sykora put the Devils up 1-0 on a backhand rebound just 28 seconds into the game, ending a personal seven-game goalscoring drought. It also gave the right wing 39 points (18 goals, 21 assists) in 39 career games against Tampa Bay.

SEAHAWKS BEAT STAGGERING RAMS SEATTLE (Associated Press)
Doug Baldwin picked a national stage to remind the rest of the NFL what they passed up in last April’s draft. Baldwin, an undrafted rookie out of Stanford, blocked a first-quarter punt that was returned by Michael Robinson 17 yards for a touchdown, then caught a 29-yard TD pass from Tarvaris Jackson in the third quarter as the Seattle Seahawks pulled away for a 30-13 win over the staggering St. Louis Rams last night. Seattle (6-7) won for the fourth time in five games and kept alive its slim hopes for reaching the post-season. Marshawn Lynch topped 100 yards rushing for the fifth time in the last six games, finishing with 115 on 23 carries. He scored a touchdown in his ninth straight game on a 16-yard run with 2:57 left to put away Seattle’s 13th win in its last 14 games against the Rams. Seahawks fans threw bags of Skittles into the end zone as Lynch celebrated his ninth rushing touchdown this season, and he tied a franchise record with nine consecutive games with a TD. Baldwin finished with seven catches for 93 yards and Steven Hauschka was 3-of-4 on field goal attempts for the Seahawks. Sam Bradford started for St. Louis (2-11) despite a high left ankle sprain that’s bothered him for nearly two months and forced him to miss last week’s game at San Francisco. Bradford was 12 of 29 for 193 yards, was intercepted by Brandon Browner on the first play of the second half and nearly picked off on a handful of other throws.

LOS ANGELES KINGS FIRE HEAD COACH TERRY MURRAY
The Los Angeles Kings fired coach Terry Murray yesterday after a slow start to a season of high expectations. Murray was replaced by assistant coach John Stevens, who will serve as an interim head coach. Murray was behind the longstruggling Kings’ bench for their best moments in the past decade, leading Los Angeles to consecutive
playoff appearances after an eightyear absence. Murray has the highest winning percentage (.560) of any coach in Los Angeles franchise history, but the Kings lost both of their first-round playoff series while under his direction. And he clearly has struggled to reach his current club, which is mired in mediocrity after entertaining hopes of contending for the Stanley Cup. Los Angeles has lost four straight games to drop to 13-12-4, culminating in a lifeless effort in a 2-1 home loss to Dallas on Saturday. The Kings have sunk to 11th place in the Western Conference standings while scoring just 65 goals, second-fewest
11
in the NHL. Stevens, Murray’s longtime associate and the Philadelphia Flyers’ former coach, will take over when the Kings open a four-game road trip tonight in Boston. Murray lost his job largely because the Kings have struggled to score goals despite adding Mike Richards and Simon Gagne in the off-season while boosting the club’s payroll to its highest level in several years. Los Angeles general manager Dean Lombardi believes his club has the talent to compete with the NHL’s best teams, but just three players have scored more than five goals this season, and most of the Kings’ forwards are mired in scoring slumps.

EX-FRENCH PM SHAKES UP PRESIDENTIAL RACE PARIS (Associated Press)
EDINBURGH ZOO’S NEW PANDAS MAKE THEIR MEDIA DEBUT EDINBURGH (Associated Press)
The ďŹ rst giant pandas to live in Britain in nearly two decades made their highly anticipated U.K. media debut yesterday and appeared to be settling in well at Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo. Tian Tian and Yang Guang – or Sweetie and Sunshine – had already met at their enclosure’s partition where they sniffed around and put their paws up at each other, zoo ofďŹ cial Alison MacLean said. The arrival of the 8-year-old panda bear pair has set off a ripple of excitement, and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland is anticipating high demand among visitors. These pandas are expected to spend 10 years at the zoo, and ofďŹ cials are keeping their ďŹ ngers crossed for a fruitful romance. So were there any signs that giant panda cubs could be on the way? “It’s the million-dollar question really, isn’t it?â€? MacLean said. “They seem to get on extremely well together but we have to spend a bit of time and just make sure that the female is in season and receptive to the male. And then when she is, that’s the point when we’ll open the door. “And after that, it’s kind of down to them.â€?
Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who gained international renown as France’s spokesman against the war in Iraq, has shaken up the presidential campaign by announcing he’ll run as an independent. The announcement Sunday night on French television is likely to complicate life for both the Socialist candidate, Francois Hollande, and President Nicolas Sarkozy, who runs the UMP party that Villepin served under. By positioning himself as a centrist, Villepin could siphon votes from both the other candidates. But the move was primarily seen in France as a ďŹ nger in the eye of Sarkozy since the two men – despite inhabiting the same conservative side of the political spectrum – are bitter rivals. Villepin was acquitted in September of charges he took part in a smear campaign against Sarkozy. On Sunday, he criticized Sarkozy for not protecting France’s interests at a recent EU summit and imposing several rounds of budget cuts.
With growth slowing and difďŹ cult budget cuts likely ahead, both Hollande and Sarkozy have tried to paint themselves as beyond partisanship – possibly because they fear both established parties will be blamed for country’s high debt levels and poor economy. Sarkozy has not even ofďŹ cially declared his candidacy yet, saying that in this time
13
of crisis, he needs to focus on being a leader, not a candidate. Villepin, too, said his candidacy will eschew party politics and distanced himself Sunday from the UMP. “I am not for the republic of parties. I don’t believe that truth lies on the right, on the left or in the centre, he hold TF1 television. He said that France had been humiliated by “the law of the markets that keep imposing on us more austerity. The election will take place over two rounds in April and May.

HEAT COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP
DAN KINVIG (Abbotsford News)
The Abbotsford Heat’s record this season suggested they were a very good team, but local fans hadn’t seen much first-hand evidence of that until this past weekend. Heading into a Friday-Saturday set with the Lake Erie Monsters, the Heat had made most of their hay in the standings on the road, where they’d posted a stellar 14-3-0-0 record. At the not-so-friendly confines of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, the Heat were just 2-5-1-0. Thus, winning both weekend games against the Monsters represented a significant momentum boost for the Heat. Hot on the heels of Friday’s 2-0 win, they posted a 3-1 victory on Saturday. “It was great for the guys, emotionally,” Heat head
coach Troy Ward said. “They felt good about the fact they played hard enough and consistent enough to get four points at home.” If Heat fans were concerned with the state of the team’s goaltending after workhorse starter Leland Irving was recalled by the Calgary Flames earlier in the week, newcomer Danny Taylor calmed those fears in a big way. Taylor, signed by the Heat on Dec. 2, posted a 38-save shutout on Friday, and turned aside 24 of 25 shots in Saturday’s win. “The word I’d use to sum up Danny is consistent,” Ward said. “You felt like he was in control back there – you didn’t feel like he was squirming all over the place.” Krys Kolanos and Dustin Sylvester scored the Heat goals on Friday, and Brett Carson, Lance Bouma and Sylvester tallied Saturday as Abbotsford improved to 18-8-1-0 on the season. With 37 points, the Heat are third overall in the AHL, but the two teams ahead of them – the Oklahoma City Barons (39 points) and the Houston Aeros (38) – also happen to reside in the West Division.
