SOME B.C. DOCTORS THREATEN TO PULL SERVICE

A new agreement that supports obstetrical anesthesia 24 hours a day, seven days a week in B.C. was announced by the provincial government yesterday. While that news is welcome, the B.C. Anesthesiologists’ Society (BCAS) – which issued a media advisory Monday regarding its Tuesday morning press conference – said it simply illustrates an ongoing problem: the lack of any kind of process for the BCAS to communicate with government to resolve several issues, including the need for 24/7 anesthesiologists in B.C. obstetrics wards. Anesthesiologists still plan to withdraw elective services as of April 1, despite the province’s “convenient” announcement, said BCAS executive director Dr. Roland Orfaly. He said the timing of the Ministry of Health release was interesting. “The first we heard of it was at 10:15 this morning,” he said yesBEST PRICE ED ON NEW & US TIRES WHEELSIES AND ACCESSOR

The B.C. Anesthesiologists’ Society says doctors will withdraw elective services as of April. terday. The BCAS press conference started at 10:30 a.m. “We had no idea the government was even talking to anyone on that issue. We were certainly not part of the process.” Orfaly said the BCAS has been trying for years to create a process in which it can come to the table with government representatives to address issues including wait times for surgery to patient safety issues (including the need for 24/7 obstetrics anesthesiologists) to perioperative efficiency issues. “Right now, there is no process.
An agreement was signed two years ago today where they promised us there would be a process in place by 2011,” he said. “We’re still waiting.” Orfaly said instead of increasing ORs and funding, more could be done with existing resources. The Ministry of Health said the “milestone” agreement with the B.C. Medical Association paves the way for 24/7 obstetrical anesthesia services in all of B.C.’s tertiary care maternity hospitals to better support high-risk pregnant women and their babies.
Surrey RCMP descended on two homes and a vehicle yesterday as local police took part in a massive nation-wide sweep of organized crime. Targets were believed to be involved in murder, gun crimes, drug trafficking and other offenses. Nationwide, 67 warrants were executed as 900 police officers conducted a sweep in three provinces, including Ontario, Alberta and B.C. Surrey RCMP arrested a 24-year-old Surrey man on a Canada-wide warrant as part of the sweep. He is being held on drug-related charges, and may be flown back to Ontario. Toronto Police Service (TPS) say in a news release that in May, the TPS integrated gun and gang task force, in partnership with the London Police Service, Waterloo Regional Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police, entered into the joint-forces criminal organization investigation. Eventually, it spread to other jurisdictions including Saskatoon, Fort McMurray, Alta., and Vancouver, the release says. Project Marvel involves organized crime, attempted murder, firearms trafficking and importation, robbery, prostitution and other offences, it says. The early morning raids in Ontario, Alberta and B.C., resulted in about 60 arrests and close to 300 charges.

B.C. CLIMATE GOAL UNCHANGED, MINISTER SAYS TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)
Ottawa’s decision to withdraw from the international treaty on climate change doesn’t change B.C.’s determination to reach its ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets, Environment Minister Terry Lake says. Lake spent last week at the international climate conference in Durban, South Africa, where the focus was on trying to extend the 2005 Kyoto Protocol. Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent announced Monday that Canada will be the first country to formally withdraw from the Kyoto agreement, because it places an unfair burden on developed countries while exempting China, India and other developing countries. Kyoto required Canada to cut greenhouse gas emissions by six per cent below 1990 levels by 2012. But by 2009, Canada’s emissions had risen to 17 per cent above 1990 levels, much of it due to expanded oilsands development in Alberta. Lake said in an interview yesterday he understands Ottawa’s position, because the second round of the Kyoto agreement would only apply to 16 per cent of the world’s emitters. “It doesn’t affect what we’re
doing here in B.C., which is to continue on with our goals of 33 per cent reduction by 2020 and 80 per cent reduction by 2050,” Lake said. With B.C.’s carbon tax in its fourth year, Lake said there has been a slight reduction in the province’s emissions. There is one more increase set for July 2012, with offsetting business and personal income tax cuts to keep it revenue neutral to the province.
“We have gone down, and part of that is due to our policies on carbon tax,” he said. “As it gets higher I think it changes people’s behaviour. It certainly changes industry’s behaviour.” Lake said there is still a lot of international interest in B.C.’s carbon tax, which remains almost unique despite the view of economists that it is the best way to put a price on carbon emissions.
The insults Christopher Groves yelled at members of the street community weighed into his one-year prison sentence, delivered by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Barbara Fisher yesterday. Groves, who was convicted of manslaughter for pushing Ariana Simpson under a bus, will also serve two years probation and 250 hours of community service. Justice Fisher explained her decision on the basis of promoting a sense of responsibility in Groves for his crime. “I am not sure (Groves) understands how serious his actions were,” she said. Fisher noted the letter Groves wrote, in which he said he accepted but didn’t agree with his verdict, and that he does not feel he deserves to continue to suffer. Fisher also referenced his belligerence on the night of Feb. 12, 2009 as a possible indication of his attitude to the drug addicted and homeless. When Simpson threw a straw at Groves, he was caught off guard and pushed the 20-year-old woman with both hands. The passing bus that crushed her was unforeseen by Groves, but objectively foreseeable, given that he pushed her into a lane of traffic, Fisher concluded. She called the act “very, very careless” and said her sentence aims to deter actions so careless.
Surrey’s Josh Boden, a former member of the B.C. Lions football team, has been found guilty of two sexual assaults. The 24-year-old was convicted in Vancouver Provincial Court last Friday. Boden was arrested – following a violent struggle – after Vancouver Police reported seeing him fondling a woman at two Vancouver SkyTrain stations in August 2009. After his arrest, he was also charged with sexually assaulting a woman during a separate incident in an office building.

Last year, community pharmacists administered more than 50,000 publicly funded flu shots. “Pharmacists have already given a significantly higher number of flu shots compared to last year,” said BCPhA deputy CEO Parkash Ragsdale. “We are hearing from our members that more people are choosing to get their flu shot from their

SHAFIA SON BACK ON STAND AT MURDER TRIAL KINGSTON, Ont. (Canadian Press)
A Montreal family accused of killing three children concocted a story that could help absolve them of guilt and told a surviving child to go along with it – but he slipped up, prosecutors alleged in court yesterday. Mohammad Shafia, 58, his wife Tooba Yahya, 42, and their son Hamed, 20, are accused of killing Shafia sisters, Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, and Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, Shafia’s other wife in a polygamous marriage, in 2009. Another brother to the girls, who cannot be identified by court order, was under cross-examination as a defence witness yesterday, Crown attorney Gerard Laarhuis pointed to an intercepted phone conversation the brother had with Hamed and their mother the night he was removed from the family home by authorities, which was also the night before the accused were arrested. He is heard saying they are “100 per cent caught,” a statement he says now he was just repeating from the police, and telling them what he told police in an interview that day. Laarhuis suggested they were trying to get their story straight. “The reason that you’re confirming this with Hamed and your mom is because you know there’s a problem with that part of the story,” the lawyer said.
DUNCAN TO MEET WITH ATTAWAPISKAT CHIEF OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan won’t be going to the troubled community of Attawapiskat, but he will meet the band’s chief halfway, in Thunder Bay. Duncan will meet Chief Theresa Spence in the northern Ontario city on Thursday in an attempt to clarify the federal role in resolving the crisis on her James Bay reserve. They are at loggerheads over Ottawa’s imposition of a third-party manager to control the band’s finances. Spence has said she will not co-operate with the overseer.
CANADA INVITED TO SOUTH KOREAN NUCLEAR SUMMIT OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Fighting the threat of “radiological terrorism” will once again preoccupy Canada and four dozen other countries and groups at a major summit next year on nuclear security. South Korea has high ambitions for the March meeting it is hosting, the follow-up to last year’s inaugural nuclear security summit that was chaired by U.S. President Barack Obama. The Harper government has yet to formally announce Canada’s participation in the two-day event in Seoul on March 26-27.
NO BREACH OF PRIVILEGE FOR MP IN PHONE SAGA OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
The Speaker of the Commons says he can’t find a breach of privilege in a telephone campaign aimed at a Montreal Liberal MP, but he calls the practice a reprehensible tactic. Liberal Irwin Cotler had complained that the Conservatives were trying to undermine him in his riding with a phone survey that suggested he had resigned or was about to resign. He claimed this was a violation of his privileges as an MP. Conservative MPs argued the phone campaign is just politics and the Speaker shouldn’t be involved.

U.S. Federal accident investigators recommended states ban the use of cellphones and other electronic devices by all drivers except in emergencies. The National Transportation Safety Board’s recommendation followed a finding that the initial collision in a deadly highway pileup in Missouri last year was caused by the inattention of a 19 year-old-pickup driver who sent or received 11 texts in the 11 minutes before the accident. The pickup driver and a 15-year-old student on one of the school buses were killed; 38 others were injured. The NTSB makes an exception for use of phones in emergencies.
EU governments have endorsed a new agreement with the U.S. on the sharing of air passengers’ data for flights from Europe to America. The EU said yesterday the accord addresses European privacy concerns. It sets limits to what the data can be used for by U.S. authorities, and contains stronger data protection guarantees, it said. If endorsed by the European Parliament next year, the new accord will replace an agreement from 2007. That had to be renegotiated after the parliament criticized it as being too lax and allowing U.S. authorities too much insight into the private data of EU citizens.
Palestinians raised their flag yesterday at the headquarters of the UN cultural agency in Paris, a symbolic boost in their push for an independent state. Cheers rose alongside the red, black, white and green flag during a ceremony held in the rain. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was among those present. Palestine was admitted to UNESCO after an October vote that prompted the U.S. to cut off funds to the agency. The Palestinians are seeking full-fledged UN membership, but Washington has threatened to veto that move, saying a negotiated settlement with Israel should come first.
Former U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney says Iraqi leaders have progressed toward a stable society, but he’s worried about the failure of Washington and Baghdad to negotiate a “stay-behind” U.S. force there. Cheney says the emerging democracy is “not perfect by any means, but they clearly are much better off than when Saddam Hussein was in charge.” Cheney tells CBS’s The Early Show the Iraqi government is still working to organize. On Iran, he says the Obama administration hasn’t done enough to keep Tehran from developing a nuclear program.
International officials are urging Bosnia to finally form a government and pass a budget 14 months after it held elections. A council made up of ambassadors of the world powers overseeing Bosnia’s peace expressed disappointment yesterday with Bosnia’s political stagnation. The six parties that are supposed to form a government can’t agree on who will run which ministry, and the lack of a budget is threatening the functioning of state agencies. The lack of political will by the election winners to compromise and form a government has caused Bosnia’s credit rating to sink recently.

MEDVEDEV: RUSSIAN PARLIAMENT WILL MEET NEXT WEEK MOSCOW (Associated Press)
The new Russian Parliament chosen in a fraud-tainted election will go ahead with its first session, President Dmitry Medvedev said yesterday, showing no inclination to bend to unprecedented nationwide protests that drew tens of thousands into the streets. Medvedev acknowledged the vote-fraud complaints, but said lawmakers will meet on Dec. 21 anyway, ignoring demands that officials annul the election and start over. “The State Duma must begin work,” he said at a meeting with leaders of the four parties that won Parliament seats in Dmitry Medvedev the Dec. 4 vote. “We must continue working on our legislation because that is the whole reason behind having a parliament.” Leaders of two of the parties were openly critical of the elections after the meeting with the president. One maintained that the vote was “illegitimate.” Even with the reported vote fraud, PM Vladimir Putin’s United Russia reached only a narrow majority, losing about 20 per cent of its seats in the parliament and revealing voter frustration at ingrained corruption and the wide gap between everyday Russians and the country’s plutocrats.

SANDUSKY WAIVES HEARING IN ABUSE CASE BELLEFONTE, Pa. (Associated Press)
Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky opted against a preliminary hearing in his child molestation case, sparing his accusers from making their claims in a packed courtroom yesterday but still vowing, in his lawyer’s words, to “fight to the death.” Sandusky’s lawyer, Joseph Amendola, said the move was tactical, and later told reporters the credibility of the Jerry Sandusky’s witnesses would be a lawyer said the key issue. He is charged with more than 50 counts that accuse him of sexually abusing 10 boys over the span of 12 years. Sandusky told reporters as he left the courthouse he would “stay the course, to fight for four quarters” and “wait for the opportunity to present our side.” His decision to waive the hearing, though unexpected, is not unusual in Pennsylvania.
At the hearings, prosecutors must show they have probable cause to bring the case to trial. Prosecutors in this case were expected to meet that relatively low bar. Amendola said Sandusky waived the hearing to head off a repeat of the child sex-abuse allegations, which “really would have left us with the worst of all worlds.” He said the decision had nothing to do with “cowardice or gamesmanship” and that the defence was not conceding guilt. Sandusky’s next court appearance, an arraignment, is scheduled for Jan. 11. He remains under house arrest.

GOP CANDIDATES TRADE NASTY BARBS
MANCHESTER, N.H. (Associated Press)
Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, the leading candidates in the contest for the Republican presidential nomination, are exchanging accusations of greed as the campaign to challenge President Barack Obama turns nasty in the final weeks before primary election voting begins. Gingrich has become the front-runner among Republicans, especially the deeply conservative voters who typically dominate the nominating process and who distrust Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist. Gingrich yesterday urged supporters and staff to refrain from attacks on his Republican presidential rivals. His campaign released a letter in which he pledged to run a campaign free of negative advertising, but he said he reserves the right to respond when his record has been distorted. On Monday, Romney called on Gingrich to return the estimated $1.6 million he received for providing strategic advice to Freddie Mac, the quasi-government agency that guarantees home mortgages. Gingrich countered quickly, saying that Romney should give back the millions he made at Bain Capital, a venture capital firm founded by Romney. Romney has been accused of making millions through massive layoffs and heartless cost-cutting at businesses acquired by Bain.

CONVICTED JACKSON DOCTOR ASKS FOR COURT-PAID LAWYER
LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)
The doctor convicted of killing Michael Jackson asked a court yesterday to appoint a publicly funded attorney to handle his appeal because he cannot afford to hire counsel. Dr. Conrad Murray filed an amended notice of appeal stating he is indigent and unable to pay for an appellate lawyer to try to overturn his involuntary manslaughter conviction. Murray’s filing states that a courtappointed attorney would decide how to frame the appeal after reviewing transcripts and rulings from the case. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that felony convicts have a constitutional right to assistance of counsel. A jury convicted Murray last month in Jackson’s 2009 death. Murray is expected to serve two years in jail, half of the fouryear sentence that Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor handed down on Nov. 29. Murray’s lawyers had sought to present evidence about Jackson’s finances, details of his deal for a series of concerts, and information about other doctors treating the superstar. But the judge stated the trial would be about Murray’s care of the singer.

big franchise films open nearly everywhere around the same time, but Tintin was that rare one that needed the goodwill of huge foreign audiences to sell U.S. crowds on a hero about whom, like Spielberg, most of them had never heard. “This is an international title,” Spielberg said in an interview at last summer’s Comic-Con, where they showed off footage of The Adventures of Tintin. “It was written and embraced by children of all ages in 55 languages, all over the world except in North America, and that is what motivated us to debut and give a full two months of Tintin to the world that created and embraced him.” So who’s Tintin? He’s an intrepid young reporter with an odd tuft of ginger hair who barrels and burrows into a story until he becomes the story, travelling the world in pursuit of crooks, treasure, mysteries and a grand good time. Tintin’s accompanied by his dog Snowy, and in most of the comicbook tales of Herge, the pen name of Georges Remi, by boozy seaman Captain Haddock. ADD YOUR

CANADIAN HOUSEHOLDS GETTING POORER: REPORT OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Statistics Canada says Canadian households are continuing to pile on debt at record levels. Average debt compared to disposable income climbed to an all-time high of 153 per cent in the third quarter, almost three points higher than the previous quarter. Credit market debt – another measure of household ďŹ nances – also hit a record at 150.8 per cent, two points higher than in the previous period. As well, the agency says household net worth declined by 2.1 per cent to $180,100 from $184,700 due to the declining value of equity investments and pension assets. During the third quarter, the Toronto Stock Market index fell 12 per cent, Statistics Canada notes. One of the few pieces of good news in the report was that national worth, which includes ďŹ rms, increased by one per cent to $6.5 trillion.
FINANCE MINISTERS URGED TO EXPAND CPP OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
A group of pension experts, including a former chief actuary of the Canada Pension Plan, is calling on Canada’s ďŹ nance ministers to commit to expanding the CPP. In an open letter yesterday to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and his provincial and territorial counterparts, the group said a growing body of research indicates that many Canadians will likely have inadequate savings to maintain their standard of living in retirement. “Several recent studies project that a signiďŹ cant proportion of middle-income earners risk a non-trivial reduction in their living standards upon retirement,â€? said the letter signed by the CPP’s former chief actuary, Bernard Dussault, and ďŹ ve others. Canada’s ďŹ nance ministers are to meet in Victoria next week.

Blue Jackets Rick Nash and Marc Methot battle Vancouver’s Alexandre Burrows for the loose puck during the second period last night in Columbus.
CANUCKS FALL TO COLUMBUS IN SHOOTOUT
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Associated Press)
James Wisniewski had the last of Columbus’ three shootout goals and Steve Mason made several big stops in his first game after a 27-day benching to lead the Blue Jackets over the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 last night. Mason shut out the Canucks for two periods and finished with 30 saves. He stopped one of the two shooters he faced in the shootout while Mark Letestu, Rick Nash and Wisniewski all found the net against Roberto Luongo. Jeff Carter had the Blue Jackets’ power-play goal in the first period off assists from Wisniewski and Letestu. Maxim Lapierre scored for the Canucks, who had won four in a row, nine of 10 and their last five on the road. Columbus, with the worst record in the NHL, had lost its last two and five of seven. Mason, making his first start since Nov. 15, stopped
all but one of Vancouver’s first 29 shots before appearing to injure his right leg with 6:46 left in regulation. There was some contact between Mason and Canuck Mason Raymond, with the goalie repeatedly slamming his glove against the ice in pain after the whistle blew. Mason stayed down for several minutes before being helped off and replaced by Curtis Sanford, who had started a career-best 12 in a row before giving way to Mason last night. Only three minutes later, Mason returned to the ice and Sanford, who had made one save, went back to the bench. Mason, who later said he had cramping in his leg, seemed fine. He was very good all night. In the second period, he made big stops on consecutive hard shots by Kevin Bieksa and Dan Hamhuis. Late in the period, Mason sprawled on the ice to smother a shot by Alexandre Burrows. The Canucks nearly won in overtime when Chris Higgins’ slap shot trickled through Mason’s pads. All that kept it from crossing the goal-line was rookie defenceman John Moore’s right skate as he held off a forward trying to get at the loose puck. In the shootout, Letestu scored on a forehand before Mason stopped Cody Hodgson. After Nash faked a backhand and scored high on the stick side past Luongo, Burrows buried a shot against Mason. Wisniewski improved to 3-of-6 in shootouts when he slipped the puck past Luongo’s outstretched left leg for the winner.
JETS DOWN NHL-LEADING WILD WINNIPEG (Canadian Press)
Bryan Little scored with five minutes remaining in regulation last night to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. The loss halted NHL-leading Minnesota’s winning streak at seven games. It also ended the Wild’s road win streak at JETS seven games, the longest in the league WIN so far this season. Little’s 11th goal of the campaign 2-1 came at the end of a Wild penalty and extended his point streak to six games. Zach Bogosian had the other goal for Winnipeg, while Guillaume Latendresse replied for Minnesota. Ondrej Pavelec made 34 saves for the Jets, who have won eight of their last nine games at home. Niklas Backstrom stopped 25 shots in defeat. Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler assisted on Little’s goal, which came at the end of a slick passing play. Minnesota went on the power play with 1:06 left to go in the third when Bogosian was called for boarding and a game misconduct but the Wild couldn’t find a way past Pavelec. Backstrom made a couple of key saves late in the scoreless first period before Minnesota scored 4:39 into the second on a two-man advantage. Latendresse took a rebound off Mikko Koivu’s shot and put the puck over Pavelec, who rolled on his back to try to make the save. The assist extended Koivu’s point streak to five games. Dany Heatley, playing in his 700th NHL game, also assisted on the goal to extend his point streak to seven games.
MAPLE LEAFS EDGE HURRICANES IN OT TORONTO (Canadian Press)
The Toronto Maple Leafs halted their slide down the standings with a much-needed win over a struggling opponent. Tim Connolly’s second goal of the game 44 seconds into overtime gave the Leafs a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes last night. The Leafs centre went to the net and had an empty cage to shoot at when Joffrey Lupul’s shot dribbled past Cam Ward. It brought relief to the Air Canada Centre after a game the Leafs were in danger of blowing. Ward, who made 36 saves, broke his stick on a goal post in frustration after the winning goal. James Reimer finished with 17 saves for the Maple Leafs (16-11-3). It was his first victory since returning to the lineup following six weeks of concussion-like symptoms. Alex Ponikarovsky replied for the Hurricanes (9-18-4). The offence didn’t come until the late stages of the third period. Connolly broke a 0-0 tie by tipping home Clarke MacArthur’s shot at 15:46 before Ponikarovsky tied it at 18:06 on a power play. Lupul was in the penalty box when the former Leaf converted a cross-crease pass. It was the sort of game neither struggling team could afford to lose, which was reflected by the tight play. The Leafs carried the play offensively but weren’t able to generate many dangerous chances against Ward.

The youngest player at selection camp took his release from the Canadian junior hockey team the hardest. RESEARCHERS FIND HINTS OF ‘GOD PARTICLE’ GENEVA (Associated Press)
PAKISTANI POLICE UNCOVER CHAINED REHAB PATIENTS KARACHI, Pakistan (Associated Press)
Pakistani police discovered drug addicts held in chains at an Islamic seminary that offered rehabilitation services, and said yesterday that young children were also sometimes shackled at the institution. The parents of around 60 young men at the seminary in the southern port city of Karachi paid it to treat their children through a regime of Islamic instruction and worship, or simply to take them off their hands. Patients who tried to escape or were dealing drugs were chained together, police ofďŹ cer Akram Naeem. Some children as young as eight were also taking regular Islamic instruction at the seminary in the southern city of Karachi, said policeman Rao Anwar Ahmed. He said they too were sometimes chained, if they were disobedient. Police arrested an administrator at the complex during the raid Monday night, which was reportedly due to a tip off. There is little or no state help for drug addicts in Pakistan, and other seminaries in the country offer similar treatment. Some mental patients are also chained at institutions around the country and in other developing nations.
Scientists hunting for an elusive sub-atomic particle say they’ve found “intriguing hintsâ€? – but not deďŹ nitive proof – that it exists, narrowing down the search for what is believed to be a basic building block of the universe. The researchers added that they hope to reach a conclusion on whether the particle exists by next year. The latest data show that the mass of the Higgs boson – popularly referred to as the “God particleâ€? – probably falls within a particular range, in the lower end of the spectrum that can be produced by smashing protons together in the massive machine being used to track it down, researchers from two independent teams said yesterday. The two teams said their data indicates the particle itself may have a mass of between roughly 114 and 130 billion electron volts. One billion electron volts is roughly the mass of a proton. The most likely mass of the Higgs boson is around 124 to 126 billion electron volts, the teams said. The revelations Tuesday were heavily anticipated by thousands of researchers who hope that
the particle, if it exists, can help explain many mysteries of the universe. British physicist Peter Higgs and others theorized the particle’s existence more than 40 years ago to explain why subatomic particles – building blocks of the universe – have mass.
13
Both of the research teams work at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva. CERN runs the $10-billion Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border, a 27-kilometre tunnel where high energy beams of protons are sent crashing into each other at incredible speeds. Fabiola Gianotti, an Italian physicist who heads the team running the so-called ATLAS experiment, said “the hottest regionâ€? is in lower mass ranges of the collider. She said there are indications of the Higgs’ existence and that with enough data it could be unambiguously discovered or ruled out next year. The Higgs boson is hard to ďŹ nd not because it is especially tiny, but rather because it is hard to create, said physicist Howard Gordon of the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y., who works with the ATLAS experiment. Frank Wilczek, a Nobel laureate and physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said ďŹ nding the Higgs boson would tie up a loose end of the so-called standard model of physics, which requires a Higgs-like particle exist. Proving the Higgs exists would be “a vindication of the equations we’ve been using all these years,â€? he said.
NO PROOF YET

Physicists at the Large Hardon Collider are increasingly conďŹ dent that they have narrowed down the Higgs boson.

Gold and Silver Coins Selling for Highest Prices in Over 30 Years Due to Weak Economy and It’s Happening Right Here in Chilliwack! By DAVID MORGAN STAFF WRITER ICC will be placing ads in newspapers, radio and running television spots this week asking people to bring in any old silver and gold coins made before 1968 and U.S. coins made before 1970. Those that bring in their coins will be able to speak with collectors one on one and have their coins looked at by a specialist. With the help of these ICC members, offers will be made to those that have coins made before 1968. Offers will be made based on silver or gold content and the rarity of the coins. All coins made before 1968 will be examined and purchased including gold coins, silver coins, silver dollars, all types of nickels and pennies. Those that decide to sell their coins will be paid on the spot. If you are like a lot of people you might have a few old coins or even a coffee can full lying around. If you have ever wondered what they are worth now might be your chance to find out and even sell them if you choose. They could be worth a lot according to the International Coin Collectors also known as ICC. Collectors will pay a fortune for some coins and currency for their collections. If it is rare enough, one coin could be worth over $100,000 according to Eric Helms, coin collector and ICC member. One ultra rare dime, an 1894S Barber, sold for a record $1.9 million to a collector in July of 2007. While that is an extreme example, many rare and valuable coins are stashed away in dresser drawers or lock boxes around the country. The ICC and its collector members have organized a traveling event in search of all types of coins and currency. Even common coins can be worth a significant amount due to the high price of silver and gold, says Helms. Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes can be worth many times their face value. Recent silver markets have driven the price up on common coins made of silver. Helms explains that all U.S. half dollars, quarters and dimes made before 1970 contain 90% silver and are sought after any time silver prices rise. Right now it’s a sellers market he said. The rarest coins these collectors are looking for include $20, $10, $5 and $2 1/2 gold coins and any coin made before 1850. These coins always bring big premiums according to the ICC. Silver dollars are also very sought after nowadays. Other types of items the ICC will be purchasing during this event include U.S. currency, gold bullion, investment gold, silver bars, silver rounds, proof sets, etc. Even foreign coins are sought after and will be purchased. Also at this event anyone can sell their gold jewellery, dental gold or anything made of gold on the spot. Gold is currently trading at record high prices. Bring anything you think might be gold and the collectors will examine, test and price it for free. If you decide to sell, you will be paid on the spot – it has been an unknown fact that coin dealers have always paid more for jewellery and scrap gold than other jewelers and pawn brokers. So whether you have one coin you think might be valuable or a large collection you recently inherited, you can talk to these collectors for free. If your’re lucky you may have a rarity worth thousands. Either way there is nothing to lose and it sounds like fun! 12-11H THR15
