A woman shot dead in her vehicle was a mother of four children, including a toddler who sat in the back seat of the luxury SUV while his mother was murdered. Police Const. Lindsay Houghton said 38-year-old Thuy Yen Vu was shot multiple times in a quiet southeast Vancouver neighbourhood and that her three-year-old son was taken into government care. “We’re working with the Ministry of Children and Family Development to return the child to the father and his siblings today,” he said yesterday, adding the woman’s oldest child is 17. “We still think there were witnesses that haven’t come forward,” Houghton said of Wednesday afternoon’s attack on the woman who was also called Jenny. Vu was not known to police and investigators are trying to determine her movements before she was gunned down while parked outside a home in her idling BMW. “We believe it’s targeted,” Houghton said. “So I wouldn’t be able to even know or speculate whether it’s a shock to the family.” Homicide investigators returned to the neighbourhood yesterday to continue the search for evidence and possible witnesses. Police do not have a description of the attacker.

B.C. SALMON HAD INFECTIOUS VIRUS DECADES AGO VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
There are indications that for decades now salmon in British Columbia may have been carrying a virus that wiped out stocks in Norway and Chile, but experts don’t know if it will have the same devastating results. Four pre-eminent fish scientists relayed their suspicions during an extraordinary meeting of the Cohen Commission, which has spent 21 months investigating the sharp decline of B.C.’s Fraser River sockeye. The commission reconvened after the alarming discovery by a Simon Fraser University professor of infectious salmon anaemia in two smolts in northern B.C. Kristi Miller, who heads a molecular genetics lab for the federal Fisheries Department, joined two other Canadians and a Norwegian on a panel appearing before the commission. “I clearly believe that there is a virus here that is very similar to ISA virus in Europe, but we really do need to get a fuller sequence to get more information about how similar it is,” said Miller. “Also, we have not established that it causes disease.” Miller gave evidence yesterday in the first of three days of the
special sitting to discuss infectious salmon anaemia. Her submissions came from research conducted in her Nanaimo laboratory. Miller told the inquiry that she has not only tested recent samples of fish, but went back into her massive archive and ran the same procedure on fish from 1986 and found a similar pattern. “Which suggests that not only
has this been here for at least 25 years, but it’s been here probably quite considerably longer than that,” she said. Some research indicates Pacific salmon could be resistant to the virus. ISA, an influenza-like virus, has killed millions of fish in Chile after it’s believed to have been transported from Norway, where it was first discovered in the 1980s.

the care and protection of aboriginal children. “Right now a child is taken away from us, or out of our home,” Underwood said. “Now we’re looking at a holistic approach, how do we surround the child with love and care. The parents need to be a part of that love and care. So instead of apprehending a child, we’re looking at ways of taking a look at the whole family.” McNeil said the agreement formalizes a 2008 arrangement with the South Island Wellness Society, chaired by Underwood and representing all the communities. She said the ministry continues to learn from years of efforts to delegate child care to aboriginal communities, such as the program that led to the death of Port Alberni toddler Sherry Charlie in 2002. Sherry was placed in the home of an uncle by a community childwelfare agency, despite his record of violent offences.

12 MINE WORKERS INJURED IN BUS CRASH CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR (Black Press)
A bus carrying workers from Myra Falls Mine, near Campbell River, rolled onto its side Wednesday evening, injuring 12 of 16 people on board. NVI Mining representative David Keiver said while 12 people were taken to hospital, the injured mine workers seemed to be in “good shape.” However, Black Press has learned that one man has more serious injuries – four broken ribs and a punctured lung – and will remain in hospital. Police said the accident is still under investigation, but winter driving conditions definitely played a part.

RCMP and city officials in Prince George aren’t disputing statistics printed in a national magazine showing the northern B.C. city leads the country in serious crimes – for the second year in a row. But RCMP Superintendent Eric Stubbs does take issue with a Macleans’ magazine headline calling Prince George the most dangerous city in Canada. He says there have been no homicides in the city this year and all 15 of the most prolific property crime offenders are now living under court-imposed conditions or are in jail.

IS PRINCE GEORGE CANADA’S MOST DANGEROUS CITY?
Call it a case of ridiculous red tape: The owner of Joe’s Atlantic Grill in Port Moody needs the city’s endorsement for a change to his liquor licence to allow for audience participation in live entertainment. “I’m allowed to have music and bands but you can’t clap or sing along,” said Peter MacDonald, who owns Joe’s. The slightly baffled council supported MacDonald’s request this week, which will now be handled by the province’s liquor control and licensing arm.

Two people were arrested in Port Moody in a wide-ranging meth-lab crackdown early yesterday. At 5 a.m., members of the regional Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Enforcement Unit executed search warrants in two apartments, where they found chemicals involved in the production of meth and MDMA, as well as some finished product. Police will not reveal the names of those arrested or which suites the materials were found in. But they did say they believe the labs are tied to B.C. biker gangs.

CANADIANS URGED TO GET OUT OF SYRIA
OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
The federal government is again urging Canadians to get out of Syria while they still can. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says it is becoming increasingly difficult for Canadian diplomats and consular officials to do their jobs under restrictions imposed by President Bashar Assad. “We are declaring a voluntary evacuation of all Canadians in Syria,” Baird said. “We will provide
specialized consular services to those who wish to leave. PLEASE “Our embassy in Damascus is also available to assist Canadians in LEAVE Syria, as well as their spouses and their dependent children with the needed travel documents, visas, between now and Jan. 14, 2012.” More than 5,000 Syrian citizens have been killed and “thousands and thousands and thousands” more injured in the country’s popular uprising against Assad’s authoritarian regime, Baird said. Canada and others have imposed tough sanctions on the country but Assad has steadfastly refused to relinquish power. Assad’s regime “has lost all legitimacy and its abhorrent behaviour will not be tolerated,” Baird said.

NEW POLICY HELPS FOREIGN CAREGIVERS OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
The federal government is making it easier for foreign nannies and caregivers to get open work permits. A special immigration program allows people to hire live-in caregivers from abroad when there are no Canadians available for the jobs. These people have to work for 3,900 hours or two years and then are eligible to apply for permanent-resident status. However, they couldn’t seek other work while awaiting permanent status. The change will give them open work permits as soon as they complete their two-year obligation and file their application for permanent residence.
TAXPAYERS GROUP SLAMS MACKAY HOTEL TRAVEL BILLS OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is accusing Defence Minister Peter MacKay of living like a king while attending conferences in Europe. The watchdog group has uncovered hotel bills through access to information laws that show the minister spent $1,452 a night for a two-night stay at a luxury hotel in Munich and $770 a night for three nights in Istanbul, Turkey. In the case of the 2010 Munich visit, the group says, the minister’s staff had rooms in the same hotel for $276 a night.

A group of animal rights activists sued the U.S. government yesterday to challenge the constitutionality of a law they say treats them like terrorists if they cause a loss in profits for businesses that use or sell animal products. Five activists represented by the Center for constitutional Rights filed the lawsuit in Boston, asking that the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act be struck down because it has a chilling effect on lawful protest activities. The law can be used to prosecute someone when a person “intentionally damages or causes the loss of any real or personal property used by an animal enterprise.”
Britain’s information commissioner says public officials must release messages held on their private email accounts to comply with freedom of information laws. Italy has re-established a friendship treaty with Libya and agreed to work to unfreeze remaining Libyan assets so they can be used by the new government. FORMER FRENCH LEADER CONVICTED OF CORRUPTION PARIS (Associated Press)
Anti-corruption crusaders, long frustrated by dirty dealings in the French political machine, rejoiced. “I see it as a historic and very important decision for the future of French democracy,” said Jerome Karsenti, a lawyer for the anti-corruption group Anticor, which had argued against Chirac as a civil party to the case. “This is a strong message from the court – a message to all politicians of responsibility. It’s also proof of a mature and transparent democracy that is today able to make a distinction and try a former president,” Karsenti added.

PROTEST ORGANIZERS ARE WORKING FOR THE WEST: RUSSIAN PM MOSCOW (Associated Press)
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin vehemently rejected opposition calls for a rerun of a recent parliamentary election, accusing those who organized massive protests against vote fraud of working to weaken Russia at the West’s behest. In blustery remarks likely to further fuel anger against his 12-year rule, Putin insisted yesterday that the Dec. 4 parliamentary election, which drew allegations of fraud and triggered the largest protests in Russia in 20 years, was a genuine reflection of the people’s will. He also put a positive Vladimir Putin spin on the protests that dented his power and threatened his bid to reclaim presidency in the March 4 vote, saying they reflected a rise in public activity that he welcomes. “The results of this election undoubtedly reflect the real balance of power in the country,” Putin said on a marathon TV show that lasted 4 1/2 hours. “It’s very good that United Russia has preserved its leading position.” Yet in a characteristic move, he accused protest organizers of working to destabilize the country on orders from the West. “That’s a well-organized pattern of destabilizing society,” Putin said.

GINGRICH ASSAILED BY REPUBLICAN FOES SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Associated Press)
Republican front-runner Newt Gingrich likened himself to Ronald Reagan and insisted in a campaign debate last night he can defeat President Barack Obama in 2012, adding it was laughable for his rivals to challenge his conservative credentials. But challenge him they did, within seconds, when former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum recalled that as House speaker Gingrich had to contend Newt Gingrich, who with a “conservative revolution” from the seemed an alsoranks of Republican ran in the earliest lawmakers. stages of the race, Gingrich, Santorum has emerged as a and former Massachusetts leader heading into Gov. Mitt Romney – who the final stretch runs second to Gingrich in of the pre-primary the polls in Iowa – joined campaign. four other White House hopefuls on a debate stage for the last time before Iowa’s Jan. 3 caucus. That made the stakes high, and Gingrich and Santorum were not the only ones eager to impress the television audience with their grit and conservative beliefs. “We’re getting screwed as Americans,” said former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, insisting that he, in fact, was a steadier conservative than any of the others on stage. Romney said his experience in private business made him the man to confront Obama in debates in
the fall of 2012. “And I’ll have credibility on the economy when he doesn’t,” he said. Gingrich, who seemed an also-ran in the earliest stages of the race, has emerged as a leader heading into the final stretch of the pre-primary campaign. His decades in Washington and his postcongressional career as a consultant have been the subjects of tough critiques from Romney’s campaign in the past week. The wild card in the Iowa race is Texas Rep. Ron Paul, with the small-government libertarian surpassing Romney in some polls of the state’s voters.
LONDON (Associated Press)
As the suspected source for the biggest intelligence leak in American history faces his first hearing today, U.S. prosecutors have their eye on another prize: the man who disclosed the documents to the world. When WikiLeaks’ disclosures of U.S. secrets exploded onto the scene last year, much of Washington’s anger coalesced around Julian Assange, the globe-trotting figure whose defiance of the Pentagon and the State Department riled politicians on both sides of the aisle. Pfc. Bradley Manning hasn’t attracted the same level of ire. The pair’s fates have been intertwined, however, even if the hacker says he didn’t know the private’s name until after news of his arrest emerged in 2010. Manning’s alleged disclosures put Assange at the epicenter of a diplomatic earthquake. Assange in turn has worked to drum up support for the imprisoned soldier – all while emphasizing that the way his antisecrecy site was set up meant he could not be sure if Manning was his source. Investigators have been scrutinizing links between the two as they explore the possibility of charging the Australian with serious crimes. A grand jury is studying evidence that might link Assange to Manning, but no action has yet been taken.

CLOONEY PICKS UP 3 GLOBES NOMINATIONS BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Associated Press)
Silent film is taking over Hollywood’s awards scene. The silent-era tale The Artist heads the Golden Globes with six nominations, among them best comedy or musical, and acting honours for its French stars, Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. Tied for second-place with five nominations yesterday are the 1960s racial tale The Help and George Clooney’s Hawaiian family story The Descendants. Both films are up for best drama, while Clooney was nominated for best dramatic actor and The Help earned acting slots for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain. Also competing for best drama: Martin Scorsese’s Paris adventure Hugo; Clooney’s political thriller The Ides of March; Brad Pitt’s baseball chronicle Moneyball; and Steven Spielberg’s epic War Horse. Joining The Artist in the best musical or comedy category are: the cancer story 50/50; Kristen Wiig’s wedding romp Bridesmaids; Woody Allen’s romantic fantasy Midnight in Paris; and Michelle Williams’ Marilyn Monroe tale My Week With Marilyn. Dujardin, who won the best-actor prize for The Artist in its premiere at last May’s Cannes Film Festival, was nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy. He plays a silent-film star whose career nosedives as talking pictures take over in the late 1920s. The film has virtually no spoken dialogue and is shot in the
boxy, black-and-white format of the silent era. Clooney has three nominations. Besides best dramatic actor as a neglectful dad tending his daughters in The Descendants, he’s up for directing and screenplay for The Ides of March. For the acting prize, Clooney will compete against his Ides co-star Ryan Gosling, who plays a presidential candidate’s aide. Gosling had a second nomination for best musical or comedy actor as a ladies man in the romance Crazy, Stupid, Love.

HOWARD STERN NOW A JUDGE ON AMERICA’S GOT TALENT
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Howard Stern will be joining the judges’ panel on America’s Got Talent, and the NBC summer talent show will uproot itself from Los Angeles to accommodate the New York-based shock jock, the network said yesterday. NBC confirmed rumours of Stern’s selection to join fellow Talent judges Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne. Stern, whose daily radio show airs on Sirius XM, is replacing Piers Morgan, who departed after last season to free up his schedule. Last winter Morgan launched a weeknight interview program on CNN. “Howard Stern’s larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to America’s Got Talent starting this summer,” said Paul Telegdy, NBC’s president of alternative and late night programming. “He’s a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable.” The show bills itself as TV’s only talent competition show that is open to any age and any talent. Auditions began in October. But now, with Stern aboard, production of the live broadcast of the show will relocate to New York.

CANDY SPELLING MOVES OUT OF GIANT HOME ON REALITY TV LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)
Granted, it’s a problem that maybe one per cent of Americans could ever face: a 30-day deadline to move out of a 56,500-square-foot home after two decades of filling it with “stuff,” as owner Candy Spelling puts it. The widow of TV producer Aaron Spelling (Dynasty, Charlie’s Angels and scads more shows) takes on the task with such can-do spirit that it’s easy to admire her, if not quite sympathize with her. The process, involving 30 moving vans and meticulous planning by the uberorganized Spelling, is detailed in HGTV’s two-part Selling Spelling Manor, which debuted last night. The second episode airs on Jan. 2. Spelling, whose husband died in 2006, sold the French-style house on 4.7 acres for $85 million US in July. The buyer was British heiress Petra Ecclestone, 22, daughter of sports entrepreneur Bernie Ecclestone. As Spelling, her staff and movers scurry to pack up Spelling Manor (as the family dubbed the estate), viewers get a peek at some of its five kitchens, 27 bathrooms and bowling alley, arcade, and silver storage and gift-wrap “specialty areas.”

HARP, WELCH’S BOOMING VOICE SET FLORENCE + THE MACHINE APART NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Florence + The Machine are more like FLORENCE + the machine: There’s no question who dominates. Florence Welch was first signed as a solo artist, and the CD booklet for their latest album, Ceremonials, has 14 pictures of Welch. But her band plays an integral part in her sound: “She has definite ideas about what she wants and she feels like she can trust us to deliver the goods,” said harpist Tom Monger. And if the band ever has a breakout player, Monger might be it. Welch calls his addition to the band, which now stands at seven, “a total fluke”: Shortly after recording Dog Days Are Over from the band’s album Lungs, which included a keyboard sound simulating a harp, Welch was sitting in a studio when Monger walked by, carrying something that Welch said “looked like a telephone box wrapped in a blanket.” She wondered what it was, and Monger told her it was a harp. She quickly invited him in, and The Machine soon had a new member.
WITCHY WOMAN
But he’s not your parents’ kind of harp player. He takes the instrument out of the parlour and plays with strength and aggression. “There is still this kind of stigma or stereotype to the harp being a romantic instrument

played by ladies in long dresses and very regal settings,” he said. “That doesn’t have to be the case.” Leave all that to Welch, who has drawn comparisons to Stevie Nicks for flowing onstage outfits and a witchy woman persona. The Ceremonials opener, Only If For a Night, is about a ghost (the singer finds it “so strange, so surreal, that a ghost should be so practical”). In Seven Devils, she talks about how “all your love will be exorcised.” She proclaims on Shake it Out that “it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back.” Florence + The Machine’s first album, which sold more than three million copies worldwide, was a quilt with a number of different producers, including Paul Epworth, whose work with Adele helped take the British singer to the top of the pop world this year. She and Epworth took a different approach for Ceremonials, which was released last month. Welch feels it represents her varied influences, which range from Hole and Nirvana to Kanye West and Jay-Z, and Beyonce. Rihanna and Lady Gaga are also favourites, as are Spiritualized. And Kate Bush.

SCOTIABANK REINS IN ECONOMY OUTLOOK TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Scotiabank says the Canadian economy is likely to mimic the slow growth of the U.S. next year as household spending is squeezed by a weak jobs market and record consumer debt. The bank predicts that domestic economic growth will come in below two per cent for the year, driven mostly by demand in the resource sector and public infrastructure. Canada will suffer from output growth in the United States which the bank says will struggle to reach two per cent in 2012, even with interest rates at historic lows. The estimates are similar to a report from TD Bank released Wednesday which saw the bank downgrade its economic growth expectations to 1.7 per cent next year. Scotiabank also suggests that emerging economies will experience moderating growth, with China at nine per cent and India at eight per cent.

HURRICANES RALLY TO BEAT CANUCKS 4-3
RALEIGH, N.C. (Associated Press)
Drayson Bowman scored two goals to lead the Carolina Hurricanes past the Canucks 4-3 last night. Tuomo Ruutu added a deflected goal and an assist, and Jaroslav Spacek scored his first goal since being acquired by the last-place Hurricanes. They scored four straight goals to rally from a 2-0 deficit, then held on to give Kirk Muller his first coaching win on home ice and snap a slide in which they had lost 16 of 20. Alex Burrows and Mason Raymond each had a goal and an assist, Kevin Bieksa also scored and Henrik Sedin had two assists to reach 700 career points for the Canucks, who entered 9-1-1 in their previous 11. Cam Ward made 33 saves for the Hurricanes. Cory Schneider stopped 37 shots for Vancouver. Carolina rallied from two goals down by scoring three times in a 4:45 stretch that spanned the second intermission. The Hurricanes took a 3-2 lead 37 seconds into the third on Bowman’s second goal, which came when he switched from the backhand to the forehand and whipped the puck past Schneider from the circle. Spacek, picked up in a trade with Montreal for Tomas
Kaberle, made it 4-2 when he scored on a 6-on-4 situation with Carolina on a power play and with a second extra attacker because of a delayed penalty on Vancouver. Spacek took a feed from Ruutu and blasted the puck past Schneider. Burrows scored on a rebound with 11:20 left to pull the Canucks within a goal, but Ward was impenetrable after that – including a sprawling reach across an otherwise wide-open net to rob Keith Ballard with about 6 1/2 minutes remaining. That helped the Hurricanes improve to 2-5-1 since Muller took over 2 1/2 weeks ago for the fired Paul Maurice. Carolina’s comeback started with 4:08 left in the second, when Bowman pulled the Hurricanes within a goal at 2-1 off a pretty pass from Anthony Stewart. Ruutu made it 2-2 when Bryan Allen’s slap shot clicked off him with 51.6 seconds left. The Canucks skated without left-winger Daniel Sedin, a late scratch because of a stiff back. He leads the team with 34 points and has 22 goals, three behind twin brother Henrik for the club lead. Henrik Sedin reached his latest career milestone midway through the second, when his pretty pass from behind the net set up Raymond’s goal that made it 2-0. Bieksa scored Vancouver’s first goal roughly 5 1/2 minutes in with a blistering one-timer that a screened Ward had no chance of stopping.

PRONGER OUT FOR THE SEASON WITH A CONCUSSION PHILADELPHIA (Associated Press)
The Philadelphia Flyers will have to find a way to keep winning games without captain Chris Pronger. BRAIN The NHL club announced yesterday that Pronger will miss the rest of the season INJURIES and the playoffs with “severe postconcussion syndrome.” Veteran forward Scott Hartnell called that news “devastating.” “He’s a presence in the room and on the ice,” Hartnell said after the Flyers’ 4-3 win in Montreal last night. “He was a big factor in our run (to the Stanley Cup final) a couple of years ago. When he’s in the lineup he brings a lot of intangibles. We’re upset about it.” The decision came after 37-year-old Pronger was examined in Pittsburgh by doctors John Maroon and Mickey Collins, who also treated Penguins star Sidney Crosby. “Chris will continue to receive treatments and therapy with the hope that he can get better,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement. Pronger has missed the Flyers’ last 11 games since coming down with what the team first described as a virus and later changed to post-concussion symptoms. Without him, rookies Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon have filled in and it hasn’t hurt so far as the Flyers have won seven games in a row and nine of their last 10. The Flyers are also missing NHL scoring leader Claude Giroux and rookie Brayden Schenn to concussions.
FALCONS CLINCH WINNING SEASON IN WIN OVER JAGS ATLANTA (Associated Press)
Matt Ryan threw three touchdown passes in less than three quarters of work, John Abraham had 3 1/2 sacks and the Falcons clinched a fourth straight winning season with a 41-14 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars yesterday. “Hopefully we can play like we did tonight for the next couple weeks,” Ryan said. This one was over by halftime. Atlanta (9-5) led 27-0 when the teams trotted to the locker room, Blaine Gabbert and the shellshocked Jaguars (4-10) saddled with a net passing total of minus-1 yard, the Falcons well on the way to strengthening their hold on an NFC wild-card spot. Gabbert had one of his worst games in a miserable rookie season, coughing up the ball twice on hits by Abraham. Both fumbles led to Atlanta scores, with defensive tackle Corey Peters scooping up the second one and trotting to the end zone early in the third quarter for a touchdown that ended any thought of the Jaguars getting back in the game. “It wasn’t just me,” Abraham said. “The whole team was able to get to the quarterback.” Ryan was 19 of 26 for 224 yards and three touchdowns, with a season-high rating of 137.3. Roddy White caught two of the scoring passes, Julio Jones the other.

25 YEARS
OF WILDLIFE CARE & REHABILITATION
teers, assisting with the day-to-day operational duties such as feeding, cleaning and general care. Particularly during the busy spring and summer months, numerous volunteers are needed to ensure all the critters’ needs are tended to. Volunteers come from all walks of life – including the Abbotsford Police Dept., visitors to Canada from Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, and University students taking advantage of Government funding for work programs during their off-season. Elizabeth also enjoys feedback from volunteers who are arranged with Pacific Pathways (a facility for adults with disabilities). Whether volunteers provide hands-on care or behind the scenes help with food, etc. their aid is essential, and appreciated. Elizabeth’s Wildlife Center has provided an educational and wonderfully fulfilling opportunity to give back, to our community and beyond.

After a brief orientation at Elizabeth’s Wildlife Center, it is apparent how organized and efficiently run it is. From incubators and intensive care rooms, to recovery pens for those at the stage of recovery where they are being readied for release, Elizabeth has made exceptional use of her space, and is very well outfitted to adapt to the needs of the various species of wildlife needing her expert care. It is her humble personality and heart-of-gold that has led the Center to its 25th Anniversary. Elizabeth Melnick, founder and primary caregiver at the Center, is a qualified registered nurse and wildlife rehabilitator. What first began as a rescue center from her home, expanded into Elizabeth’s backyard with construction of aviaries and small housing facilities. Elizabeth is incredibly grateful for her many volunteers – donating time, products, services and support – that have made it possible for her to operate over the years. Local Veterinary Clinics, including Gladwin, Whatcom Road, Abbotsford, Elwood, and Clayburn to name a few, have been instrumental in providing consultations, advice and surgeries, often at their own expense. Recently Rona Home and Garden provided a crew and materials to construct an additional pen, and currently an anonymous crew is constructing a walkway on the property. Power Pros Electrical has improved the electrical service, and Abbotsford Community Foundation and Canada Trust have also supported the Center. In addition, there are numerous hands-on volun-

GREEK CIVIL SERVANTS WALK OFF JOB TO PROTEST AUSTERITY ATHENS (Associated Press)
Greek civil servants walked off the job for three hours yesterday to protest austerity measures that include pension and salary cuts and the suspension of tens of thousands of workers on partial pay. The work stoppage was to leave hospitals with emergency staff and shut down other public services from noon to 3 p.m. About 1,000 pensioners marched through central Athens to protest outside Parliament. Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, meanwhile, was meeting with Greece’s debt inspectors from the International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank and European Commission. The country is negotiating the terms of a second massive rescue package, worth 130 billion euros ($169 billion), with the eurozone and private bondholders. On Wednesday, the IMF’s top official in Greece urged the country to fire excess public servants and impose further cuts on workers’ pay rights to reduce the size of the public sector and make the economy more competitive. Poul Thomsen warned the government it would not be able to reduce its budget deficits unless it focused on spending cuts, arguing that the country’s taxpayers had reached the limit.
Germany’s president tried yesterday to defuse criticism over a private loan he received before becoming head of state, saying he regrets that his handling of the issue may have created the “wrong impression.” Christian Wulff has faced questions about his integrity this week over the 500,000 euro ($650,000) loan made at below market rates by a wealthy businessman’s wife, a longtime friend. He received it in 2008, when he was governor of Lower Saxony state. Before he was elected president last year, opposition lawmakers in the regional legislature asked him if he had had business relations with Egon Geerkens, a former jeweler and investor. He said he hadn’t, but didn’t mention the loan from Geerkens’ wife. Wulff, who was long a deputy leader of Angela Merkel’s conservative party and was the chancellor’s candidate for the presidency, said he had answered the questions put to him and had seen no need to mention the private loan. “I recognize that the wrong impression could arise here. I regret that,” Wulff said in a statement yesterday – his first com-
ment since the mass-circulation Bild daily reported on the loan and asked in a headline Tuesday: “Did Wulff deceive Parliament?” Wulff used the money to purchase a new home. The money was repaid before he became president, with help from a bank loan. “It would have been better if ... going beyond the concrete questions, I also had mentioned this private loan agreement with Mrs. Geerkens,
because I had and have nothing to hide,” Wulff said. The primary role of Germany’s largely ceremonial president is to serve as a moral authority. Egon Geerkens was quoted Thursday as telling the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung that he had derived no business gain from his long friendship with Wulff, and noting that he had already given up his business activities at the time of the loan. “It was a purely private loan from my wife for a friend,” he said, according to the report.
