PROTESTERS SAY THEY OFFERED $760K IN SERVICES

VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Occupy Vancouver protesters say they doled out almost as much in services as the city says it spent on dealing with the five-week encampment. Earlier this week, the city’s manager issued a report saying the protest cost taxpayers almost $1 million, but protesters say city officials chose to spend that much money by overreacting. Occupy spokeswoman Sarah Beuhler says the protest camp actually fed and cared for people the city or the province might otherwise have had to. She says the camp provided the equivalent of about $90,000 in sheltering costs and another $672,000 in primary medical care. The city says it spent $981,103, including $590,000 on police overtime to monitor the camp, more than half of it in the first week. City manager Penny Ballem said in the report that Vancouver’s costs were in line with those incurred in other major cities.

A hard landing by the Coastal Inspiration will leave the Duke Point ferry terminal out of service for months.

FERRY CRASH CLOSES TERMINAL FOR MONTHS

VICTORIA (Canadian Press)

The BC Ferry terminal at Duke Point near Nanaimo will be out of service for months after it was rammed by a ferry Tuesday. BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall says the docking facility suffered major damage, including to its ramp, when it was hit by the Coastal Inspira-

tion, which also had damage to its bow doors. She says it will take several months to repair the dock and at least one month to fix the bow of the Coastal Inspiration because a new part has to be made in Germany, where the ship was built. Marshall says the Coastal Inspiration’s sister ship, the Coastal Renaissance, will replace the damaged vessel on the mid-island route, which will connect Tsawwassen to Departure Bay at Nanaimo while the Duke Point terminal is closed for repairs. She says a preliminary investigation shows an electronic failure in a control system may have caused the crash, but that hasn’t been verified. The crash caused minor injuries to one passenger and one crew member.

The federal government’s new formula for health care transfers is expected to cost B.C. $256 million a year starting in 2014. The change is not related to Ottawa’s move to tie health funding to economic growth, which doesn’t take effect until 2018. Before that happens, the federal transfer is moving to a per-capita formula and ending dedicated funding aimed at certain surgical wait times and other priorities identified in past federal-provincial agreements. B.C. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said the funding formula change amounts to a substantial reduction for B.C., while Alberta’s transfers are expected to go up. Falcon wants the federal funding to reflect aging population in B.C. and some Atlantic provinces, and the extra costs that implies. Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced the new provincial transfer policy at a meeting with provincial finance ministers in Victoria Monday. Per-capita health transfers will continue to grow by six per cent per year for six more years. Increases after that are to match economic growth plus inflation, with a minimum annual increase of three per cent. Falcon praised Flaherty’s move

to connect health care budgets to the economy, to protect Canada’s triple-A credit rating. Falcon said B.C. will press Ottawa for two changes, a formula for population aging and incentive payments for “provinces that are undertaking innovation and are doing their bit to ensure that we will have a sustainable health care system.” NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston said Falcon has reversed his position on connecting health

budgets and economic growth. Premier Christy Clark made a similar suggestion during the B.C. Liberal leadership race last spring, and soon found herself under attack by rivals. “George Abbott and Kevin Falcon both said it was unrealistic to tie it to an artificial measure like that,” Ralston said. “They were saying that if you have bad times, you’ll be forced to find hundreds of millions of dollars in health care cuts.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS GRANDMA, HERE’S $500,000 VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Just in time for Christmas – a 59-year-old Kamloops mother and grandmother has won a 500-thousand-dollar lottery jackpot. Bonnie Marchand bought a 6-49 ticket in early December and matched the four numbers on the extra for the win. She says she’s struggled in the past to make ends meet and this will make Christmas a little brighter. Marchand says she bought a new sewing machine for herself, helped out some family members and invested some of her winnings.

CLINIC CLOSURES WILL BE COSTLY: NURSES UNION VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

The B.C. Nurses Union says the closure of five sex health clinics in the southern interior will end up costing the health care system more in the long run. The clinics in Kelowna, Kamloops, Penticton, Grand Forks and Cranbrook test for sexually transmitted diseases, but the Interior Health Authority says it’s closing them because they aren’t used much. Nurses Union President Debra McPherson says the alternatives, including family doctors, are inadequate and not as cost-effective.

THREE TEENS PEPPER SPRAYED, MOTIVE UNKNOWN NANAIMO NEWS BULLETIN (Black Press)

There appears to be no motive behind a pepper spray attack against three teens in Lantzville yesterday. Police said the youths were camping in a wooded area behind Seaview Elementary School when one of them heard a noise. He stepped out to investigate and was pepper sprayed. The two girls with him came out to see what happened and were immediately sprayed as well. None of the victims was able give police a description of the attacker.

THIEF TARGETS HOCKEY TEAM’S LOCKER ROOM BLACK PRESS

The federal government is ending targeted funding arrangements aimed at surgical wait times, and switching to a per-capita formula.

Several members of the visiting Richmond Sockeyes ice hockey team had items stolen from their locker-room between periods of Tuesday night’s game against the Delta Icehawks at Ladner Leisure Centre. According to a report from Delta Police, an unknown suspect entered the locker room and stole various items – wallets and cell phones – from inside, and then left the scene. Police canvassed the area for witnesses with negative results.

NEW METRO RULES HIT DIRTY DIESEL MACHINES JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)

Owners of the most soot-spewing backhoes, excavators and other diesel equipment in Metro Vancouver must now register their machines and pay hefty annual fees. A new regional bylaw takes effect Jan. 1 that Metro hopes will prod equipment operators to upgrade to cleaner diesel technology to help reduce cancer, respiratory illness and other health risks from particulate pollution. The most polluting off-road diesel engines are classified Tier 0 and must be registered and labelled with a ‘T0’ decal to operate in Metro. They’re being charged $4 per horsepower for 2012, but Metro intends to steadily raise the fees in the years ahead and expand the rules to more machines. Fees that start now in the hundreds of dollars – for

SOUTH DELTA LEADER (Black Press)

a 100-horse excavator, for example – could be in the thousands within a few years. Owners who retire a Tier 0 machine or upgrade it to Tier 2 or better will be refunded 80 per cent of the fees paid in the previous three years. Diesel soot emissions are responsible for about twothirds of the lifetime cancer risk from air pollution in the region. Off-road equipment accounts for more than 40 per cent of diesel emissions in Metro and the machines have not been upgraded as swiftly as on-road diesel trucks, which make up about eight per cent of emissions. Ships are the biggest emitter at 43 per cent, but offroad machines are considered a bigger danger because they operate closer to where people live, work and play.

ALERT RAISED OVER HOSPITAL CHARITY SCAM NORTH SHORE OUTLOOK (Black Press)

The BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is warning North Shore residents after a pair of scam artists were found fraudulently soliciting donations for the hospital. The two men have allegedly been selling Starbucks coffee door-to-door at the reduced cost of a donation. The men allegedly encouraged North Vancouver residents to pay by debit card and then, in at least one case, later withdrew money from the victim’s account. The Foundation said in a release that they are not currently fundraising and any door-to-door solicitors the hospital does employ are easily identifiable by their foundation badges.

Japan has released a new long-term cleanup plan for its tsunami-hit nuclear plant that would take as many as 40 years to fully decommission while keeping the still vulnerable facility safely under control. Trade Minister Yukio Edano said the government plans to move through the process firmly and safely while paying attention to the views of the 100,00 residents displaced by the crisis at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. A March 11 earthquake and tsunami sent the plant’s three reactors into meltdowns, causing massive amounts of radiation to leak.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych says he will not intervene in the case of jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko despite renewed pressure from the West. Tymoshenko, now the top opposition leader, was sentenced to seven years in jail in October for abuse of office in a case that the European Union and the United States have condemned as politically motivated. The EU balked at signing a key co-operation agreement with Kyiv this week over her jailing. Tymoshenko, Yanukovych’s longtime foe, charges that he ordered her imprisonment in order to bar her from elections.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is imposing new rules aimed at preventing airline pilots from flying while dangerously fatigued, a move safety advocates have been urging for more than two decades. The rules issued yesterday would limit the number of hours a pilot can be scheduled on duty to between nine and 14, depending on the time of day. But cargo carriers, which do much of their flying overnight when people naturally crave sleep, are exempted. The FAA said forcing cargo carriers to reduce the number of hours their pilots can fly would be too costly.

South Korean intelligence reports indicated yesterday that North Korea was consolidating power behind Kim’s son, believed to be in his 20s. ACTIVISTS: OVER 100 VILLAGERS KILLED IN SYRIAN MASSACRE BEIRUT (Associated Press)

Syrian troops assaulting a northwest town with machine-gun fire and shelling have killed at least 100 people in one of the deadliest episodes of the 9-month-old uprising against President Bashar Assad’s regime, activists said yesterday. Tuesday’s attack on the town of Kfar Owaid in Idlib province showed the Syrian government was pressing ahead with its crackdown despite its agreement this week to an Arab League plan for bringing a halt to the bloodshed. “It was an organized massacre. The troops surrounded people then killed them,” said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. He said troops on the outskirts of the town surrounded and fired on crowds of civilians and activists trying to flee out of fear they would be detained. The group, which collects information on the crackdown from local activists, said 111 were killed in Kfar Owaid Tuesday. The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, also said more than 100 people were killed.

FEUD BETWEEN ROMNEY, GINGRICH INTENSIFIES

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Associated Press)

The fight between Republican presidential front-runners Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich is escalating, with attack ads dominating the volatile contest to challenge President Barack Obama next fall. Two weeks remain before Iowa casts the first votes in the battle for the nomination. After soaring to the top of the polls in recent weeks, former House speaker Gingrich finds himself struggling under more than $1 million in negative advertising, much of it paid for by supporters of Romney, the former Massachusetts governor. Both men criticize a new campaign finance system – fueled by deep-pocketed political action committees – that each benefits from. In Iowa, Gingrich vowed his White House bid would remain positive, while in the next breath he called the Romney camp’s tactics “disgusting.” Gingrich suggested at a campaign stop on Tuesday that his opponents “hire consultants who get drunk, sit around and write stupid ads.” Romney protested that he couldn’t control the independent PAC expenditures, but pointedly declined to disavow the ads. The former businessman is seeking to project a tough, pragmatic image, saying there’s “no whining in politics.” “I’m a big boy,” he said on MSNBC.

CRAIG EXCELS AWAY FROM BOND FRANCISE NEW YORK (Associated Press)

The time off from James Bond has been very good to Daniel Craig. In the three years since the release of Quantum of Solace, Craig has made his Broadway debut (A Steady Rain); starred in the Second World War-era tale of Jewish rebellion, DeďŹ ance; joined up with Steven Spielberg again (The Adventures of Tintin, following their earlier collaboration in Munich); and starred in the summer blockbuster Cowboys & Aliens. Now, he’s adding yet another major franchise to his plate, with David Fincher’s remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. At this point, the early misgivings of the “Blond Bondâ€? seem laughable. Craig has emerged as one of the biggest British movie stars. More than that, he’s already managed to prove that – maybe more than any previous guardian of the tuxedoed spy – he won’t be pigeonholed by the role. Craig has not just grown into Bond, but, perhaps, beyond it. “It’s a very fortunate time for me at the moment,â€? Craig said in a recent interview. “So I’m just trying to grab it with both hands.â€? Though the 43-year-old actor is known for being careful of his privacy, Craig comes across as relaxed. Self-deprecation is his fallback, and he often chortles sheepishly at his own wit. Fincher calls him the “giant planetary body,â€? of

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, around which the other characters orbit. The director is clearly taken by Craig, whom he compares to Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas – agile leading men with calm exteriors and smouldering eyes. “He’s obviously got a physical presence and a sense of menace,â€? says Fincher. “But he has this ability to be available for the other actor. It’s a selessness. It’s a movie star thing. It’s knowing how to create a conduit for the audience.â€?

Piers Morgan was an extremely handson tabloid editor who must have known that phone hacking was rife at his paper, a former employee claimed yesterday. Business journalist James Hipwell said voicemail interceptions were an everyday activity at Britain’s Daily Mirror tabloid. Hipwell told a British inquiry into media ethics that while he had no direct evidence that Morgan, the Daily Mirror editor at the time, was involved in phone hacking, he said it was impossible to imagine that Morgan had been kept in the dark. “Nothing happened at the newspaper without him knowing,â€? Hipwell testiďŹ ed. Morgan denied having any direct connection to hacking – although he refused to answer questions about how he came to hear a message left by Paul McCartney on the phone of his ex-wife Heather Mills. Morgan’s description of the message in a 2006 article led some to wonder whether he’d gotten it through hacking. Mills has said there was no way Morgan could have obtained it honestly, and yesterday emphasized that she had “never ever played Piers Morgan a tape of any kind, never mind a voice message from my ex-husband.â€?

STREEP TAKES ON THE IRON LADY

CHINA CALLS BALE’S ACTIVIST VISIT EMBARRASSING

LONDON (Associated Press)

With hairdo, handbag and hubris, she dominated – and divided – Britain for a decade. Now a ďŹ lm about Margaret Thatcher is doing it all over again. The Iron Lady stars Meryl Streep as Britain’s ďŹ rst female prime minister, whose neoVictorian values and freemarket ideology helped transform a battered post-imperial country into an economically dynamic but industrially depleted and increasingly unequal society. But it’s the ďŹ lm’s focus on the personal, rather than the political, that has made Thatcher’s enemies apprehensive and her allies unhappy. The Iron Lady depicts Thatcher, now 86, as a frail, elderly ďŹ gure with dementia, holding imaginary conversations with her dead husband Denis (a genial Jim Broadbent) as she looks back on her life as a double outsider – both a woman and a lowly grocer’s daughter in a male-dominated, patrician Conservative Party. Streep’s eerily evocative, pitchperfect performance looks likely to earn her a 17th Academy Award nomination and possibly a third

Batman star Christian Bale should feel embarrassed for trying to visit a human rights activist while he was in China to promote a movie the country has submitted for an Oscar, a government spokesman said yesterday. Bale was physically stopped by government-backed guards from visiting blind activist Chen Guangcheng in eastern China last week. A CNN crew Bale was travelling with recorded the scufe with the guards, who enforce Chen’s house arrest. Asked whether the publicity has been embarrassing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said he thought the actor should feel embarrassed not China. He said Bale was invited by director Zhang Yimou to attend the opening ceremony of the ďŹ lm The Flowers of War. “But he was not invited to fabricate news or shoot ďŹ lm in a certain village,â€? said Liu. “I think if you want to make up news in China, you will not be welcome here.â€? Bale, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for last year’s The Fighter, said he wanted to shake Chen’s hand and tell him “what an inspiration he is.â€?

acting Oscar. But the intimacy of the movie’s portrait has led some Conservatives to accuse it of being disrespectful, distasteful, even faintly idolatrous. One lawmaker has demanded a parliamentary debate, telling the House of Commons he was disturbed by the ďŹ lm. “I just wonder why the ďŹ lm-

makers had to go so heavily on the mental illness, the dementia side, when Baroness Thatcher has had a very important life in the politics of this country and the world,â€? said Conservative legislator Rob Wilson. “It left me wondering about the humanity of the ďŹ lmmakers who are very subtly denigrating someone who was a great prime minister.â€? Thatcher rarely appears in public these days, and her inner circle releases little information. But her daughter Carol wrote about her mother’s dementia in a 2008 book. Conservative grandee Norman Tebbit also criticized the ďŹ lm, saying the former prime minister was nothing like the “half-hysterical, overemotional, overacting woman portrayed by Meryl Streep.â€? The ďŹ lm’s director rejects the criticisms, but says she’s not surprised by them. “Those two words – Margaret Thatcher – are provocative in this country,â€? said Phyllida Lloyd. “She still has the ability to set people on one another. People think of her either as St. Margaret who saved the nation, or the shedevil who ruined the lives of millions and bred a culture of greed.â€? The ďŹ lm opens in Canada Dec. 30.

CAW CALLS FOR REVIEW OF TRAIN PLANT PURCHASE TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Canada’s largest private sector union is calling on Ottawa to review the purchase of Canada’s only locomotive manufacturing plant by U.S.-based Caterpillar Inc. back in 2010. The Canadian Auto Workers union says hundreds of jobs at the Electro-Motive plant in London, Ont., are potentially at stake. In a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, CAW president Ken Lewenza said the future of the plant is in peril. “Government inaction and ineffective foreign investment rules could result in the end of more than 60 years of high value-added manufacturing and the loss of 800 good jobs, ....” Lewenza said. Caterpillar bought the London plant in June 2010, but within less than a year of the purchase three other locations in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil were slated to build EMD locomotives.

MICROSOFT BOWS OUT OF CES TRADE SHOW NEW YORK (Associated Press)

Microsoft is pulling out of the International Consumer Electronics Show, the largest trade show in the Americas. It’s joining Apple in saying that it prefers to put on its own events when the time is right to show off its products. Microsoft said the next show, to be held Jan. 9-12 in Las Vegas, will be the last show at which it has a booth or the CEO delivers the customary kick-off speech. The software company has been one of the biggest U.S. supporters of the event, which gathered nearly 150,000 people this year. Microsoft says it will continue to use CES as a place to connect to customers, but it won’t have a booth because its product milestones don’t align with the show’s January timing. ADD YOUR

BURROWS SCORES EARLY WINNER AS CANUCKS DOWN RED WINGS

VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Alex Burrows scored what proved to be the winner in the first period last night as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 in a battle of two of the NHL’s hottest teams. Burrows, who has been lighting it up with the Sedin twins in recent games, gave the Canucks a 3-1 lead with an artful tip of a hard pass to the goalmouth by Daniel Sedin. It was Burrows’ fourth goal in as many games and tied Daniel Sedin for the team lead with 13. Chris Higgins and Cody Hodgson scored 21 seconds apart earlier in the period to give Vancouver a 2-0 advantage, prompting Detroit coach Mike Babcock to call a time out. Alex Edler completed the attack for Vancouver, which got a 38-save effort from goalie Roberto Luongo. Todd Bertuzzi and Drew Miller scored for Detroit. Vancouver (21-11-2) won its third straight game and 12th in 15 starts to close to within a point of Northwest Division-leading Minnesota Wild. The Red Wings (21-11-1), who are chasing the Chicago Blackhawks in the Central Division, lost for only the second time in seven games. Higgins scored his second goal in three games and 10th of the season when he buried Mason Raymond’s

rebound to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. Raymond unleashed a hard shot when he was sent in alone by Kevin Bieksa’s long pass down the side boards. Hodgson doubled Vancouver’s lead 21 seconds later after a Detroit turnover in the neutral zone. He skated Jannik Hansen’s pass into the slot and banged the puck behind Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard. Bertuzzi drew the Wings to within a goal when a prone Luongo appeared to lose the puck in a scramble in his crease and the former Canuck jammed it home to make it 2-1. Burrows restored the two-goal advantage with his back-to-the-net tip-in to give Vancouver a 3-1 lead at the first intermission. The Red Wings drew to within a goal entering the third period after a long thirdline shift in the Canuck zone. Miller, with his fifth goal in six games, tipped a shot by a falling Darren Helm over Luongo after Danny Cleary did most of the work in the corner. Niklas Kronwall almost tied it near the end of the second period when he blasted a rebound from the deep slot into Luongo’s pads. Edler provided some insurance early in the third period by depositing Hansen’s rebound behind Howard while the Canucks were shorthanded to make it 4-2.

FORSBERG DENIES SWEDEN THREW OLYMPIC GAME STOCKHOLM, Sweden (Associated Press)

Peter Forsberg is backtracking on comments he made in a TV interview suggesting Sweden threw a group-stage game at the 2006 Turin Olympics to get an easier draw in the second round. The 3-0 loss to Slovakia meant Sweden, which went on to win the gold medal, faced Switzerland instead of Canada in the quarter-finals. In an interview that aired Sunday, Forsberg told Swedish broadcaster SVT that he “saw no reason to win the game” against Slovakia. “But there was no order from any coach that we should lose,” Forsberg said. “Maybe we discussed within the group that it’s probably better if don’t go out and tire ourselves out too much.” The International Ice Hockey Federation asked the Swedish federation for an explanation, and on Wednesday, Forsberg said his comments were taken out of context. In a statement to Swedish news agency TT he said no coach or player “talked about not doing their best in the match against Slovakia.” The former Colorado Avalanche player said he didn’t mean to put Swedish ice hockey “in a bad light” and that he hadn’t phrased himself properly. “What I meant to say was that even for someone like me, with a winning mentality, it is sometimes difficult to find full motivation for a match that doesn’t have to be won at any cost,” Forsberg said.

2006 GAMES

BLACKHAWKS BEAT CANADIENS 5-1 CHICAGO (Associated Press)

Andrew Brunette and Patrick Sharp scored 21 seconds apart midway through the second period, and Corey Crawford made 20 saves in his first start in more than two weeks as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-1 last night. Viktor Stalberg scored midway through the third period and Jonathan Toews and Bryan Bickell added late goals for NHL-leading Chicago. The Blackhawks rebounded from a 3-2 loss at Pittsburgh on Tuesday, improving to 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. Andrei Kostitsyn scored a power-play goal for Montreal, which lost its fourth straight – including the last three since interim coach Randy Cunneyworth replaced Jacques Martin last Saturday. Crawford hadn’t played since being pulled early in the second period of a 4-3 shootout loss to Phoenix on Dec. 5 after allowing three goals on 16 shots. Backup Ray Emery finished that game, then made six consecutive starts and won five straight before losing to the Penguins. Montreal backup Peter Budaj blocked 23 shots in his first start since Nov. 30. Carey Price had started the Canadiens’ previous nine contests. Kostitsyn’s power-play goal, on a deflection from just outside the crease, opened the scoring at 5:35 of the second.

TEBOW STRIKING A BALANCE BETWEEN WORK, CHARITY

There’s a quarterback Tim Tebow can’t wait to meet while in Buffalo for a pivotal late-season game. A special guest showing up at his request. Tebow is bringing in Jacob Rainey, a prep player from a private school in Virginia who had part of his leg amputated after a severe knee injury. Tebow is looking forward to chatting with Rainey before and again

after the Denver Broncos’ game against the Bills on Saturday. For as dedicated as Tebow is about improving on the field, he’s just as devoted to his engagements off it. That’s why losses really don’t linger. He’s already turned the page after the Broncos’ home loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. Tebow has become the centre of the football Tim Tebow universe since guiding the Broncos from the brink of playoff extinction back into contention. Denver leads the AFC West after rebounding from a 1-4 start.

Tebow’s name and image have been popping up all over as he’s appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, been mentioned at a Republican debate and spoofed during a Saturday Night Live skit in which the show mocks his faith. Tebow doesn’t mind all the attention. It gives him a platform for his causes, such as the Tim Tebow Foundation’s “Wish 15” program. “Ultimately, that’s what’s important. As hard as it is to say it, that’s more important than even winning or losing the game,” he says.

PRINCE HARRY HEADING BACK TO AFGHANISTAN LONDON (Associated Press)

Britain’s Prince Harry has said he will be deployed to Afghanistan for a second time – almost four years after his previous secret mission was cut short when details leaked, according to a newspaper report yesterday. The 27-year-old Harry, who is third in line to the throne, told guests at a military awards ceremony Monday night that he would likely return next year, The Sun newspaper reported. “I can’t wait to get out there,” Harry was quoted as saying. Harry served as a battlefield air controller in Afghanistan for 10 weeks from Dec. 2007, but was sent home early after details were made public – first by an Australian celebrity magazine and later on the Drudge Report website. The prince returned to Britain in November after two months of combat helicopter pilot training in the U.S. At the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, California, Harry flew Apache attack helicopters in the desert close to the Mexican border. During training at the Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field in southern Arizona, he fired missiles and rockets.

A truck driver who won a $300,000 Lamborghini in a convenience store contest crashed the sports car six hours after he got it, and now plans to sell the 640-horsepower convertible because he cannot afford the insurance or taxes. “I already had offers on it. I’m going to sell it,” David Dopp said yesterday. “I have bills more important than a Lamborghini. I’ve got a family to support.” Dopp, a 34-year-old truck driver for Frito-Lay, spun out of control just a few hours after taking the keys to the Murcielago Roadster that he won in a contest sponsored by Maverik convenience stores. The lime green convertible was being held by his insurance company in a Utah towing yard. It will be sent to an authorized Las Vegas dealer for repairs next week. Dopp said the damage “isn’t super bad” – a punctured oil pan and wheel and a few dents and scratches on the front and rear ends. The father of six said he couldn’t afford to pay taxes on the car or the insurance, which runs $3,500 every six months. “That’s why rich people own

them,” he said. “The poor people like me don’t.” Dopp was taking family members and friends on joy rides the first evening. He said he took a curve at about 72 kph and “hit some black ice and spun out.” The car jumped a curb and went through a fence before coming to a rest about 75 feet off the road. Neither Dopp nor his passenger was injured. “My heart pretty much fell out,”

13

Annette Dopp told KSL-TV. “They said they were OK. Then (came), you know, that feeling when your heart drops and you’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh. What do we do now?”’ The Lamborghini was the envy of Santaquin, a town of 9,000 about 88 kilometres south of Salt Lake City. Police say the Lamborghini’s high-performance summer tires weren’t suited for icy conditions and the car is simply too powerful – and exceptionally light with carbon fiber body parts. Dopp wasn’t ticketed. He said he’ll be more careful the next time he gets behind the wheel.
