Metro police laid 399 impaired driving charges over the holidays, up from 308 over the same period in 2010.

METRO DUI CHARGES JUMP NEARLY 30% VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Despite B.C.’s tougher drunk driving laws, police in Metro Vancouver say they stopped more impaired drivers over the last two months compared to a year ago. Police say from Nov. 1 to Jan. 2 they laid 399 charges, up from 308 during the same period in 2010. The drunk driving law was challenged in court and a judge ruled parts of it unconstitutional, but has given the government six months to fix the law.

RCMP Superintendent Norm Gaumont says the number of impaired charges may have gone up because some people were confused by the court ruling and believed they wouldn’t be charged if they refused to blow into a breathalyzer. “We’re not backing off,” Gaumont said. “I wonder if people were confused about the Supreme Court decision and what it meant. To set the record straight – refusing to blow remains a Criminal Code offense.” He points out that officers also charged 63 people for refusing to blow from Nov. 1 to Jan. 2, compared to 37 last year. RCMP officers also handed out 332 three-day suspensions from Nov. 1 to Jan. 2, compared to 240 last year during the same time frame.

Thieves robbed a Terrace residence while the homeowner lay deceased inside late last month. The man’s son went to check on his father at his residence on Old Lakelse Lake Dr. on the morning of Dec. 30, discovered that someone had broken into the home, and then he found his father deceased, police said. “It is likely that it was known the man was deceased while the home was went through,” Terrace RCMP spokesperson Const. Angela Rabut said. After a thorough investigation involving the Terrace RCMP Forensic Identification Unit, Terrace RCMP, and the provincial coroner, it is determined that foul play was not involved, said Rabut. The death of the terminally ill 78-year-old man and the break and enter are not related, she added. Stolen were a black and white Mastercraft air compressor with an orange hose attached to it, two red plastic 20 L Jerry cans – one marked “STRAIT GAS”, and an orange gas powered weed whacker. Police continue to investigate the break and enter. If you have information about this crime contact the Terrace RCMP at (250)638-7400 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers by telephone at 1-800-222TIPS. PROSECUTORS SEE RISKS IN TV RIOT TRIALS JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)

B.C.’s plan to televise the trials of Stanley Cup rioters is causing concern among prosecutors, according to the president of the B.C. Crown Counsel Association. Samiran Lakshman warned the planned video broadcasts – if approved by judges – could jeopardize the cases against those rioters or others yet to be charged. “Not every witness will want to be broadcast on YouTube and the six o’clock news,” Lakshman said. “We want to make sure we don’t in any way endanger the prosecution or dissuade people from coming forward.” If courts approve the video broadcast of an accused who objects, “the defence may have another weapon in their arsenal that the right to a fair trial has been violated.” Attorney General Shirley Bond last fall ordered Crown to pursue video broadcasts in the riot cases. B.C.’s Criminal Justice Branch had initially opposed the idea. Bond and Premier Christy Clark have argued that the public nature of the hockey riot offences justifies a more public response. Crown counsel spokesman Neil MacKenzie said applications will be made on a case-by-case basis and

the aim will be to televise substantive appearances, including trial and sentencing. It’s expected the video feed would be streamed on the Internet to provide equal access. Judges will have to carefully weigh the implications of allowing a web-streaming camera in the court. Limiting the broadcasts to the sentencing stage – after rioters have either pleaded guilty or been convicted – may be one way to address many concerns, said

Bentley Doyle, communications director for the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C. “The timing of this is more for political optics than logical,” Doyle said. “Why are we bringing cameras into a system that is already hurting for money?” Broadcasting has been rarely used in B.C. Supreme Court, most recently for lawyers’ submissions in a reference case on Canada’s law against polygamy. No witnesses were recorded.

An intoxicated man thought he was doing laundry in his own home, but it took the Abbotsford Police to convince him otherwise on Monday morning. Const. Ian MacDonald said police received a call from a resident who had heard noises coming from downstairs at about 9 a.m. and discovered a man washing his clothes in her laundry room. The woman informed him he was in the wrong house, but he insisted he had just moved in. Police returned the man to his residence a few houses away. MacDonald said he was new to a neighbourhood where a few of the homes look the same and have the identical interior layout.

FIVE JEWISH GRAVESTONES DESECRATED IN VICTORIA VICTORIA NEWS (Black Press)

Victoria police say five historic gravestones in Emanu-El Jewish Cemetery – all belonging to Holocaust survivors –were spray-painted with black swastikas and other images sometime between 8 p.m. on Dec. 30 and the early morning hours of Dec. 31. The case is being investigated by police as a hate crime, which potentially could result in hate crime charges in addition to charges of mischief, said Victoria Police Const. Mike Russell.

PEACE ARCH NEWS (Black Press)

Two Chinese nationals were detained by Surrey RCMP New Year’s Day following an alleged border-jumping incident near Peace Arch Park. Police say they were alerted to the two men – reportedly walking into Canada without passing customs – by U.S. Border Patrol, which had been shadowing the pair on the U.S. side. Intercepted by officers in the 17000-block of 0 Avenue shortly after 1:30 p.m., the men appeared to be Chinese citizens. The men were booked into cells and then turned over to the Canada Border Services Agency. BLACK PRESS

POLICE VOW FULL PROBE INTO DEATH OF B.C. MAN Mexican police have promised a thorough investigation into the shooting death of a B.C. man during an apparent home invasion. Police say Robin Wood, 67, of Salt Spring Island, B.C., was killed Tuesday when he stood up to two suspects who tried to rob a friend’s home in the town of Melaque, south of Puerto Vallarta. “He struggled with the attacker, he resisted the robbery, and he was shot in the chest,” Hugo Flores, of the Cihuatlan municipal police, said in a phone interview. Four emergency vehicles were dispatched when police got the call and they closed all the exits into the area so the suspects could not escape, Flores said. “We conducted an extensive search but were unable

to locate them, so we have now turned the investigation over to the state authorities, who will continue the investigation,” said Flores. There isn’t much to go on because the robbers were masked, but police said they would devote all their resources to finding the suspects. According to police, Wood was taken to hospital after the attack, where he died of a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest. An autopsy has already been conducted and all the information has been turned over to state authorities, who will also deal with the repatriation of his body. Residents of the island where the retired mechanic lived described him as a bright, likable man who got along with everybody and took life’s difficulties in stride.

The Christmas holiday week was a busy time for the members of the Hemlock Valley Fire Department. They responded to a call for a child who had fallen off of the trail into Sakwi Creek. The call ended well, however, thanks to a passing adult who pulled the youngster from the creek prior to the arrival of the rescue crew.

SHIPPING CONTAINER FIRE CLAIMS MAN’S LIFE NORTH SHORE OUTLOOK (Black Press)

A 53-year-old man is dead from apparent smoke inhalation after a fire burned in a North Van shipping container police say he was living in. On Jan. 3, at about 10 p.m., first responders arrived at a container located behind a business in the 200-block of Lloyd Avenue, after receiving a call from a passerby about smoke coming out of the structure. “It appeared the victim had been living in the container for up to a year, with a bed, chair, hotplate and television found inside,” said RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong.

55% WAGE CUT OFFERED CANADIAN PRESS

In this March 19, 2008 file photo, Prime Minister Stephen Harper waves from the cabin of an engine at Electro-Motive Diesel in London, Ont.

HARPER MUM ON LOCKOUT AT PHOTO-OP PLANT OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

The Conservative government is washing its hands of a nasty labour lockout at a locomotive plant in London, Ont., that was once used by Prime Minister Stephen Harper as a backdrop to tout business tax breaks. Electro-Motive Canada locked out 420 workers on Jan. 1 after making a take-it-or-leave-it offer that the union says included a 55 per cent wage cut. Electro-Motive is owned by heavy equipment giant Caterpillar Inc. through its Progress Rail subsidiary. “This is a dispute between a private company and

the union and we don’t comment on the actions of private companies,” Harper spokesman Carl Vallee said yesterday in an email. The prime minister showed no such reticence on Mar. 19, 2008 when he visited the Electro-Motive plant to showcase a $5 million federal tax break for buyers of the diesel locomotive-maker’s wares and a wider $1 billion tax break on industrial capital investment. Ken Lewenza, president of the Canadian Auto Workers which represents the unionized ElectroMotive employees, said the prime minister has a duty to make his views known. “Mr. Harper went around, shook workers’ hands and indicated to workers that they had a great future as a result of his announcement,” Lewenza said in an interview. “For him to pass this on as a bargaining dispute between the employer and the union is ridiculous. How do you hand a (corporate) partner a nice big cheque and then say, by the way, there’s no ground rules relative to the cheque?”

$50M JACKPOT CLAIM ON HOLD FOR ONTARIO DUO TORONTO (Canadian Press)

A couple from Hawkesbury, Ont., who hold the winning ticket for last weekend’s $50-million Lotto Max draw will be waiting a little longer for the loot. Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. requires that any prize claims by so-called “insiders” – which includes retailers – must be thoroughly reviewed.

FOUR ARRESTED IN 72,000 KG MEAT HEIST LAVAL, Que. (Canadian Press)

Apparently, the market for 72,000 kilograms of deboned chicken is fairly limited. So limited that Laval police say four men alleged to have illegally plucked a tractor-trailer full of the merchandise from a parking lot unwittingly tried to sell it back to the very person who originally owned it. A police spokesman says the truck was destined for Toronto when it disappeared from a Montreal parking lot on Monday. The next day, the owner of the plundered poultry received a call asking if he wanted to buy deboned chicken at $4.50 a kilo. The owner, suspicious of the offer, agreed to meet with the men, but not before telling Laval police about the meeting on Tuesday night. Const. Franco Di Genova says the owner identified the chicken from the logos on the boxes – about 350 of cases of which were recovered. Police arrived within minutes to make the arrests in the fowl felony. Four men between the ages of 27 and 54 face charges of possessing stolen goods and were released on a promise to appear at a later date. The tractor-trailer has not been recovered.

Activists accused the Syrian regime yesterday of misleading Arab League observers by taking them to areas loyal to the government, changing street signs to confuse them and sending regime supporters into rebellious neighbourhoods to give false testimony. Activists also said regime loyalists are painting military vehicles blue to make them look like police vehicles – a ploy that allows the government to claim it has pulled the army out of heavily populated areas. Syria’s crackdown on a 9-month-old uprising has killed more than 5,000 people.

Germany’s president says an angry call to a newspaper editor regarding a story on a private loan he received was a serious mistake, but is making clear that he has no intention of stepping down. Christian Wulff – Chancellor Angela Merkel’s candidate for the largely ceremonial presidency in 2010 – has faced questions over a 500,000 euro loan he received from a wealthy businessman’s wife before he became president. But pressure deepened this week with revelations he called the editor of Bild newspaper last month to complain about its plans to publish the original story about the loan.

Counting day arrived yesterday at the London Zoo, and no one was exempt – not even tarantulas. Each year the London Zoo has to take a detailed census of every living thing in its care to comply with its license terms. That means workers armed with clipboards and plenty of patience had to count every animal. It’s not easy when there are more than 18,000 animals at the site, and every one has to be accounted for. Zoo manager Mark Habben says the count is a challenging task because many of the animals are very fast moving and are adept at hiding in their enclosures.

Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has told his Socialist party that he will not seek re-election as its leader, according to the state TV network NET. Papandreou, who led his country’s government as Greece slipped into its crippling economic crisis, stepped down as prime minister in November to support, along with two conservative opposition parties, a coalition government led by technocrat Lucas Papademos. Papandreou was re-elected as the Socialists’ leader in November 2007 for a four-year term, and a new party vote for that position is now overdue.

A British judge sentenced two men yesterday to at least 14 years in prison for stabbing a black teenager to death in London almost two decades ago – a crime that exposed racism within the police. The murder of 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence in 1993 shocked the country and came to be seen as a festering racial injustice. Judge Colman Treacy called the murder an evil crime motivated by racial hatred. He sentenced Gary Dobson to 15 years and 2 months in jail, and David Norris to 14 years and 3 months. Three other suspects remain at large.

NORWAY KILLER IS NOT PSYCHOTIC, EXPERTS INSIST OSLO, Norway (Associated Press)

Prison psychiatrists monitoring confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik say he is not psychotic and he has not been put on medication, a prosecutor said in a court filing yesterday, adding fuel to calls to reassess whether he is legally insane. The original finding by two court-appointed psychiatrists has been fiercely debated by mental health experts and several lawyers representing the victims of the massacre that rocked Norway last summer have demanded the Oslo District Court order a second evaluation. But, prosecutor Anders Breivik Svein Holden said yesterday in a letter to the court that despite the new information he would not seek another evaluation. Breivik has recently been given access to media in prison and could try to manipulate new experts in ways that would be favourable to him, he said. Prosecutors say they would rather let experts testify at the upcoming trial. Breivik, 32, has confessed to setting off a bomb that ripped through Oslo’s government district on July 22, killing eight people, then opening fire at the summer camp of the governing Labour Party’s youth wing, killing another sixty-nine.

Michele Bachmann, meanwhile, announced yesterday that she was withdrawing from the race after finishing last in Iowa. Bachmann, an extreme conservative, spoke at length about her reason for entering the race: congressional passage of Obama’s overhaul of the U.S. health care system. She said it “endangered the very future” of the United States.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who finished fifth in Iowa, declared his intention to continue campaigning. It was widely believed he, too, would leave the race, but he wrote on his Twitter feed yesterday: “Here we come South Carolina!!!” As the returns were counted, they showed a near tie through most of Tuesday night and into yesterday among Romney, Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul. The count from all 1,774 precincts showed Romney with 24.55 per cent support and Santorum with 24.54 per cent. Paul, who drew a younger crowd with his libertarian views, drew 21.5 per cent of the votes.

POLYGAMIST LEADER JEFFS HAS PHONE PRIVILEGES HALTED

HOUSTON (Associated Press)

Texas prison officials have suspended indefinitely the phone privileges of convicted polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs while they investigate whether he violated rules with improper telephone calls. Officials believe the calls Jeffs made to two people on his phone list were broadcast on a speakerphone to his congregation, a violation of the prison phone rules. “At this point, he’s unable to make phone calls pending the outcome of the investigation,” Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said yesterday. He said the inquiry would likely wrap up within the next week or so. Jeffs is serving a life sentence plus 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting two of his underage brides. The charges followed a raid in 2008 on a ranch that’s home to followers of his Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Each of the Christmas Day calls lasted 15 minutes, the maximum duration before calls are cut off. People on the list have gone through a registration process and also are made aware of the rules that stipulate the calls must be to a single person, be made to a land line, not to a cellphone, and can’t be to a business or an international number.

FASHION EDITOR MENTORS DESIGNERS ON PROJECT RUNWAY TORONTO (Canadian Press)

When Marie Claire editor-in-chief Joanna Coles was asked to mentor on the new series Project Runway All Stars, she relished the chance to let contestants know what women want in clothes. Wearable fashion that suits many lifestyles is a big focus for Marie Claire and it should be a priority for more young designers as they face an increasingly conglomerated industry, she says. “I think many of them are very, very artistic, but you need to have a real sense of what the market will stand if you WHAT want to go on and be the next Michael WOMEN Kors,â€? Coles said in a recent telephone WANT interview from her Manhattan ofďŹ ce. “I think that the marriage of art and commerce in fashion is under-respected. It’s under-respected in the culture, and I think many of the designers – certainly in the ďŹ rst series of Project Runway they were in – were so intent on showing off their creative skills that they wouldn’t think about the needs of being commercial, the needs of actually growing a customer base and having loyal customers, which as any designer knows is absolutely crucial.â€? Debuting Jan. 9, Project Runway All Stars features 13 past contestants from the Emmy Award-winning Project Runway series. Among them is Austin Scarlett, who came in fourth on season 1; Kara Janx, the fourth-place ďŹ nisher from season 2; and Mondo

Prizes include a designer’s boutique in select Neiman Marcus stores, $100,000 in technology and ofďŹ ce space from HP and Intel, $100,000 US cash from L’Oreal Paris, and a feature spread in Marie Claire for which the winning contestant will serve as guest editor for one year.

Given that astounding popularity, the author doesn’t sound like he’s losing any sleep over how viewers will receive The Firm TV series, debuting Sunday. “I’m not worried because I’m convinced the show is going to be a success. But also, personally, I’ve had so much success because of that one book that nothing could, you know, worry me about it now,â€? Grisham said in a recent interview. “What we’re doing now ... to me is just pure fun to watch it on TV.â€? The author’s stamp of approval is all over the series, which picks up 10 years after lawyer Mitch McDeere and his wife Abby entered the witness protection program at the conclusion of The Firm.

STREEP SAYS PLAYING THATCHER IN IRON LADY WAS A CHALLENGE

DERMATOLOGIST TO AUCTION OFF CELEBRITY GIFTS

LONDON (Associated Press)

She’s a double Oscar winner with a knack for accents, but Meryl Streep says playing Margaret Thatcher was a challenge – although her own experience helped her understand the struggles faced by Britain’s ďŹ rst female prime minister. Streep is transformed into the divisive politician who reshaped Britain in The Iron Lady, which had its European premiere in London yesterday. “It was extremely daunting, because I’m from New Jersey,â€? Streep said. “And yet as an outsider, I felt something of what she might have felt.â€? Streep, who won Academy Awards for Kramer Vs. Kramer and Sophie’s Choice, said her experience as one of a handful of women at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire helped her understand Thatcher’s isolation. In 1970, Streep spent a term at the men-only college, which became coeducational in 1972. “There were 60 of us and 6,000 men, and I had a little ashback to

The once high-ying dermatologist to the stars who gave massive doses of painkillers to Michael Jackson is auctioning off hundreds of gifts and mementos from his clients to stave off bankruptcy. Dr. Arnie Klein is selling off everything from Cher’s 2005 Bentley to Jackson’s hats and shirts, to Elizabeth Taylor’s Matisse to a Princess Diana memorial Beanie Baby from Elton John. The Jan. 23 auction, expected to fetch about $700,000 US, will be run by Bonhams’ in Los Angeles. Klein ďŹ led for bankruptcy last January according to Los Angeles court records. A $25,000-a-day practice dwindled to sometimes $500 a day, his former accountant, who is suing Klein for defamation, told the Los Angeles Times. Allegations of Klein’s massive Demerol painkiller prescriptions for Jackson started shortly after the singer’s death in 2009. He denied them but they were documented during the trial last year of Jackson physician Dr. Conrad Murray. The California Medical Board subpoenaed him to testify on Dec. 15 about his treatment of Jackson, a client and friend.

to get a 17th Oscar nomination for her performance as Thatcher, who led Britain from 1979 until 1990. As prime minister, Thatcher fought a war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, saw the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall and the implosion of communism and was branded the Iron Lady by Soviet journalists for her steely resolve. She presided over the decline of Britain’s industrial might and trade union power and the birth of a free-market culture with new winners and many new losers. That historical drama is only glimpsed in The Iron Lady, which depicts Thatcher, widowed after the death of husband Denis, looking back on her life as a provincial grocer’s daughter rising to the top of a party dominated by men. Streep said while the ďŹ lm has been called a political biopic, “I was interested in it precisely because it wasn’t really that.â€? “It’s a subjective imagining,â€? she said. “It’s not the God’s-eyeview chronicling this side, that side, the politics of it. It’s a very deep look at a whole life – from the end of it.â€?

PENSION PLAN HEALTH FELL IN 2011: INDEX TORONTO (Canadian Press)

The health of defined benefit pensions took a turn for the worse in Canada in 2011, a trend that is expected to continue this year, according to business consultancy Towers Watson. The Toronto-based firm said yesterday that low interest rates and plunging stock markets weighed heavily last year on defined benefit plans, which attempt to guarantee a certain level of post-retirement income. Data from the firm’s tracking index found that the funded ratio of a hypothetical defined benefit plan in Canada declined 16.2 per cent from 86 per cent at the start of last year to 72 per cent at year-end. “DB plan sponsors will continue to feel the impact of the double-whammy we experienced in 2011 – a combination of declining long-term interest rates and poor equity market performance,” Ian Markham, Canadian retirement leader at Towers Watson, said in a release.

AIRLINE FARES JUMP ON NEW EU EMISSIONS RULES NEW YORK (Associated Press)

Within days of new European rules on carbon emissions produced by passenger jets, two major airlines say they will raise fares. Delta began adding $6 per round trip to the price of tickets sold in the U.S. for travel to Europe. And Lufthansa said it will raise prices but not right away. Under European regulations that took effect this week, airlines flying in and out of Europe must get certificates to pay for the carbon dioxide emissions produced by their flights. They will get free credits to cover most flights this year but must buy or trade for credits to cover the rest. Lufthansa said it would have to buy at least 35 per cent of the certificates it needs based on past emissions and recent growth. It put the cost at 130 million euros ($168 million) in 2012. ADD YOUR

All-star | Ottawa Senator Erik Karlsson was first among defencemen yesterday with 585,000 votes in fan balloting for this year’s all-star game in the Canadian capital. Voting was set to close last night.

LUONGO MARKS MILESTONE IN STYLE AS CANUCKS BEAT WILD VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo celebrated his 700th NHL game by blanking the Minnesota Wild 3-0 last night as the Canucks took the overall lead in the standings. Luongo blocked 28 shots for his second shutout of the year – both over the Wild – and the 57th of his career. The Canuck netminder, who made 33 saves Dec. 19 in a 4-0 win over Minnesota, wasn’t severely tested but was good when he had to be. The Canucks got goals from first-liners Daniel Sedin and Alex Burrows while Manny Malhotra fired into an empty net in the final minute. Vancouver (25-13-3) has 53 points, one more than Western Conference rival Chicago and the New York Rangers atop the East. The Canucks, winners of seven of their last 10 starts, could have a short stay in the NHL penthouse because other leading clubs have games in hand. The Wild (21-14-6), who led the Northwest before a rash of injuries in December, lost for the 10th time in 11 games and are five points behind Vancouver in that division. They’ve now lost 10 straight to the Canucks at Rog-

ers Arena. Vancouver took a 2-0 first-period lead after Minnesota’s Nick Schultz broke in on Luongo but grazed the post on an odd-man rush. Daniel Sedin, with his fifth goal in six games and 18th of the season, opened the scoring with Vancouver’s NHL-leading 44th first-period goal. His shot from above the face-off circle eluded goalie Josh Harding who was screened by Burrows, who made it 2-0 three minutes 42 seconds later. The Canuck forward fell into Harding’s net but managed to finish a three-way passing play with the Sedin twins. Luongo preserved the lead in the scoreless second period. He got a shoulder on a Pierre-Marc Bouchard blast and snagged Cal Clutterbuck’s power-play shot headed for the top corner. Later in the period he stood his ground against Devin Setoguchi on another odd-man rush and found Nate Prosser’s blue-line drive through heavy traffic. He got a glove on a Setoguchi shot from the slot with four minutes remaining. Burrows almost made it 3-0 early in the third period when Daniel Sedin’s shot hit him in front of the net and glanced off the post.

TODAY’S BEST ATHLETES…

LOU’S 700TH GAME

CANADIAN JUNIORS EYE BRONZE MEDAL CALGARY (Canadian Press)

The disappointment was still in the eyes of the Canadian players a day after their semifinal loss at the world junior hockey championship. As they prepared to play Finland for the bronze medal, furrowed brows and grim WORLD expressions indicated Tuesday’s 6-5 JUNIORS loss to Russia was still on their minds. But they will have to let it go for Canada to avoid finishing out of the medals at the tournament for the first time in 14 years. Finland, a dark horse which has improved since the competition got underway, will certainly be motivated to win bronze today after falling 8-1 to Canada in the tournamentopener in Edmonton. Russia will play for its second straight title in today’s goldmedal game against Sweden. As per his usual practice, Canadian head coach Don Hay wouldn’t reveal whether it will be Scott Wedgewood or Mark Visentin in Canada’s net because he tells his starting goalie the night before the game. While Wedgewood admitted he was sore after Russian defender Alex Khokhlachev crashed into him in the second period Tuesday, he said he would be able to play. “You’ve got to win a game to get a medal now,” Wedgewood said yesterday. “We’ve got to take pride in that and it still means something to us.” Canada will be down to 11 forwards for today’s game after faceoff specialist Boone Jenner was suspended for spearing Russian captain Evgeni Kuznetsov in the second period of the semifinal. Canadian winger Devante Smith-Pelly broke his foot in the tournament-opener.

ELLER SCORES 4 AS HABS TOP JETS 7-3 MONTREAL (Canadian Press)

Lars Eller had four goals and an assist as Montreal bounced back from a poor road trip with a convincing 7-3 win over Winnipeg. Eller scored his fourth goal of the game on a penalty shot 11 minutes into the third, spinning around to beat Chris Mason for his third tally of the period. Montreal, which went 1-5 on the trip, won for the second time in nine games – the last eight since interim coach Randy Cunneyworth took over for the fired Jacques Martin on Dec. 17. Josh Gorges, Tomas Kaberle and Michael Cammalleri also scored for the Canadiens, who improved to 6-7-6 at home. Carey Price made 24 saves. Lars Eller Andrei Kostitsyn and Erik Cole each had two assists. Blake Wheeler had a goal and an assist, including a powerplay tally 17:51 into the second to draw Winnipeg within 3-2. Tim Stapleton’s sixth goal gave the Jets a 1-0 lead 3:41 in. Andrew Ladd scored the Jets’ final goal with 6:57 left.

KEYSTONE ‘WHISTLEBLOWER’ ALLEGES SHODDY MATERIALS ALONG ORIGINAL PIPELINE WASHINGTON (Canadian Press)

A former inspector for a company that did work on TransCanada’s original Keystone pipeline is accusing the Calgary-based company of a cavalier disregard for the environment. Mike Klink was an engineer for construction company Bechtel Corp., a contractor that worked on the first portion of the Keystone pipeline that carries Alberta oilsands crude to refineries in the American Midwest. It was completed in 2010; the controversial Keystone XL would extend that pipeline to Gulf Coast refineries. In an opinion piece published over the weekend in

Welcome back | The return of grey wolves has dramatically altered the landscape in portions of Yellowstone National Park, as new trees take root in areas where the predators have curbed the size of foraging elk herds, a new study reports. Nebraska’s Lincoln Journal Star, the 59-year-old Klink says he raised a series of concerns about alleged sub-standard materials and poor craftsmanship along the pipeline. Klink says he was fired by Bechtel as a result, and filed a federal complaint about his dismissal in 2010. TransCanada spokesman Terry Cunha disputed Klink’s assertions, saying he “appears to have made a number of allegations against his previous employer and others, none of which have been proven.” Klink says, however, that he noticed substandard building materials, construction methods and safety standards as he inspected the pipeline. “Cheap foreign steel that cracked when workers tried to weld it, foundations for pump stations that you would never consider using in your own home, fudged safety tests, Bechtel staffers explaining away leaks during pressure tests ASSOCIATED PRESS as ‘not too bad,’ shortcuts on the steel and rebar that are A former inspector for a company that did work on essential for safe pipeline operation and siting of facilities TransCanada’s original Keystone pipeline is alleging on completely inappropriate spots like wetlands,” he wrote. the company cut corners as it laid down the pipe.

AFGHAN LEADER WELCOMES TALIBAN OFFICE IN QATAR KABUL, Afghanistan (Associated Press)

Afghan President Hamid Karzai yesterday welcomed a possible deal that would allow Taliban insurgents to open an office in Gulf nation of Qatar with the aim of holding talks with the United States. “Afghanistan agrees with negotiations between United States of America and the Taliban which will result in the establishment of an office for Taliban in Qatar,” a presidential statement said. It said establishment of the office could lead to an end of the bloody Afghan conflict. The likelihood that the Taliban will remain a potent fighting force after most foreign forces leave by the end of 2014 is driving the U.S. and NATO to seek even an incomplete bargain with the insurgents that would keep them talking with the Kabul government. On Tuesday, the Taliban announced that they had reached a preliminary understanding to open the representative office, an unprecedented step toward peace negotiations that might lead to a winding down of the 10-year conflict. The statement did not say when the office would open.

of NATO’s bombing campaign to oust Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

The prosecution in the Hosni Mubarak trial said yesterday it has concluded that Egypt’s ousted president, his security chief and six top police officers were the “actual instigators” of the killing of more than 800 protesters during last year’s popular uprising that brought down his regime. Mubarak and his seven codefendants are facing charges of complicity in the killings and could face the death penalty if convicted. Wednesday’s hearing coincided with the second day of voting in the third and final round of parliamentary elections that began on Nov. 28. Even before the final round, Islamists led by the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s largest political group, were assured of a majority in the new legislature. The Mubarak trial brings out conflicting visions. Reformers and the victims’ families clamour for a full measure of justice, while many others want the turbulence to end so that Egypt’s battered economy can move toward stability. On Wednesday, chief prosecutor Mustafa Suleiman said the defendants clearly authorized the use

of live ammunition and a shootto-kill policy against peaceful protesters. He also complained that the prosecution had to launch its own probe after security authorities ignored the prosecution’s requests for help in the inquiry. Prosecutors interviewed hundreds of witnesses, physicians and police officers to build its case. Suleiman said the decision to use live ammunition was taken

on Jan. 27 last year, just before the most violent day of the 18-day uprising that forced Mubarak to step down on Feb. 11. Dubbed the “Friday of Rage,” Jan. 28, 2011 also saw the deployment of army troops in Cairo and across much of the nation, as well as the yet to be explained disappearance of security forces. The prosecution also showed video of the violence taken by TV stations. They showed police officers loading up their weapons with live ammunition and police and fire engine trucks chasing protesters and running them over.
