POLICE ARREST VANCOUVER MAYOR’S SON MARTIN VAN DEN HEMEL (Richmond Review)

Team Canada goaltender Mark Visentin raises his arms as the Canucks defeat Team Finland 4-0 to win the bronze medal at the IIHF World Junior Championships yesterday in Calgary.
The highest profile suspect in a local dial-a-dopeand-gun investigation linked to the foster son of Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has been taken into custody. Richmond’s Jinagh Navas-Rivas, 21, who lived with the Robertson family for two years until 2009, was taken into custody yesterday around 2 p.m, a day after Raymond Ma turned himself in to the RCMP. RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said investigators located Navas-Rivas, and opened a line of communication with him, after which a location was selected for him to surrender himself. He remains in custody. At virtually the same time, Vinh Hoang David Le turned himself in to the Vancouver Sherrifs Department. Le also remains in custody. As first revealed by The Richmond Review, NavasRivas was named as part of an 18-count criminal indictment on Dec. 23. In an investigation launched last June by the Richmond drug squad, police seized a quantity of cocaine, ecstasy and steroids, along with weapons. Navas-Rivas is charged with transferring a firearm and two counts of cocaine trafficking. After learning of the RCMP investigation on Dec. 29, Gregor Robertson issued a statement asking that Navas-Rivas turn himself in.

Longtime friends Missy Schalin and Sean Annan believe Enderby Fire Department Captain Dan Botkin didn’t die a hero. He was born one. The pair eulogized Botkin, 25, killed Dec. 29 on-duty in a fire and explosion at Sperlich Log Constructon, during Botkin’s public funeral yesterday at the Enderby Arena, which included more than 1,000 firefighters and emergency services personnel from across Canada. “He was Dan-tastic, as he would say, and for those of us who were blessed to know him couldn’t agree more,” said Schalin. “All of his friends and family vote him as an amazing person, husband, son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, touching each of us in such a unique way, teaching us it’s not the years in your life but the life in your years.” The uniformed firefighters and emergency personnel, which included RCMP in red serge, Search and Rescue, paramedics and volunteers, formed an honour guard at the Enderby Chamber of Commerce, and marched through the streets of Enderby under a mix of blue and grey skies, with a hint of sunshine, to the arena. The guard also included more than 30
fire trucks from various departments on hand for the funeral. Enderby Fire Chief Kevin Alstad escorted Botkin’s wife Miranda – the newlyweds married Oct. 29 – to her seat at the front of the stage which was adorned with her husband’s fire jacket and pictures of Botkin. “I have never heard Dan say one bad word about anybody,” said Alstad. “He was a solid, reliable person one could trust with his own life.”
While Alstad, Schalin and Annan eulogized their friend and colleague, a number of dignitaries were present to express their condolences. Among them were Enderby Mayor Howie Cyr, B.C. Fire Commissioner Rebecca Denlinger, Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster and, representing the Queen, B.C. Lt.-Gov. Steven Point. Botkin was laid to rest in the Enderby Cemetery.

POLL: ENBRIDGE PIPELINE HAS 48% SUPPORT IN B.C. VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)
Nearly half of British Columbians support Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway project, which would pass through the province, according to an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of the pipeline company. The survey, released yesterday, suggests 48 per cent of B.C. residents back the controversial $5.5-billion project – 14 per cent of those strongly. On the flip side, 32 per cent oppose it – 13 per cent strongly. Northern Gateway would carry some 525,000 barrels per day of Alberta crude to the West Coast for export to Asian countries. A much smaller parallel line would bring diluent – used to make oilsands bitumen thin enough to flow through pipelines – from the coast to Alberta. Regulatory hearings into Northern Gateway begin next week in Kitimat and the process is expected to take about two years, with more than 4,000 people set to speak. There has been vocal opposition to the project from First Nations, environmental and other groups, though Thursday’s poll suggests that sentiment may not be as widespread as has been thought. ForestEthics, one of the most vehement critics of Northern Gateway, quickly dismissed the Ipsos Reid poll as “bogus,” citing an independent survey by Forum Research last month that found half of Canadians oppose the project.
UNPAID GOLDEN EARS BRIDGE TOLLS HIT $4M MAPLE RIDGE NEWS (Black Press)
Many motorists using the Golden Ears Bridge would rather pay later, about $4 million worth, and are waiting till their car insurance becomes due before paying their fares. “For whatever reason, they don’t seem too worry about paying the interest on the overdue amounts and they just let it roll and, finally, they just clear it up,” said Ken Hardie of TransLink. With electronic tolls, they can delay paying their bills, which they get in the mail, and which are subject to two-per-cent monthly interest charges.

A group of thieves absconded with 770 metres of underground copper from near the Westhills development in Langford, likely some time in the past month. After receiving a call from a resident about an above-ground power box sitting in a strange position on Wednesday, a BC Hydro crew discovered copper wire, thick as a thumb and weighing about 5,000 pounds in total, was missing. West Shore RCMP said the thieves entered underground service tunnels through manhole covers and removed the wire.

DECEASED OWNER OF ROBBED HOUSE ID’D Criminals in Terrace reached a new low when someone broke into a home and robbed it while the owner lay deceased in his bed Dec. 29. George Yeast, 78, who owned Norco Septic Service until 2000, was terminally ill from cancer when he passed away, said his son Douglas. “He was really sick and we think the people that broke into the house while he was dead, we think they were watching him,”said Douglas. While his body lay there on the bed, the thieves rifled through his pants pockets – the pants were on the side of the bed. The thieves also took George’s late wife’s wedding ring set, a ruby ring with a distinctive setting, a set
of house and pickup keys from the house and, from the shop, they took a black and white Craftsman air compressor with an orange hose, an impact wrench, sockets and a Westward socket set. “There was nothing of any value, just sentimental stuff,” said Douglas. “Lowlifes are also a fact of life but you would almost think in a case like this even their group of friends would be appalled,” said Douglas. Yeast’s death and the break and enter are not related, police said. Also stolen from the shop on the property according to police were two red plastic 20 L Jerry cans - one marked “STRAIT GAS” and an orange gas powered weed whacker.

An 84-year-old American sailor found alive in the remote South Pacific told his rescuers his mast was so badly cracked that he couldn’t raise his sails without snapping it in two, Chile’s navy said yesterday. But aside from scrapes, bruises and general exhaustion, Thomas Louis Corogin was in good condition, the navy reported. Corogin, a lawyer from Port Clinton, Ohio, was apparently frustrated at having to give up on his seventh attempt to sail alone around the tip of South America, one of sailing’s most difficult feats.
When it comes to stating its case internationally, Israel is tired of playing it straight: It is recruiting gays and lesbians as unofficial envoys. In a bid to boost its international image, the country’s ministry of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs has established a cadre of diverse volunteers who speak about Israel around the world. In a recent post on its website, the ministry encouraged minorities and members of the gay community to step forward. Ministry spokesman Gal Ilan said yesterday that the goal was to highlight Israel’s diversity.
Russia’s top election official has shrugged off protesters’ calls for him to step down over alleged fraud during last month’s parliamentary ballot. An independent panel of experts in the U.K. says there is a strong case for changing British law to help terminally ill people die. In a report yesterday, the Commission for Assisted Dying described the legal status of assisted suicide in Britain as “inadequate and incoherent.” The commission said it would be possible to legally allow assisted suicide for terminally ill people under strict criteria: those who were at least 18 years old and who were making a voluntary choice free from coercion or mental health problems.

Two police commanders charged with gross negligence face prison terms. Khater’s speech came on the last of three days of sessions in which the prosecution lay out its case, following months of testimony by witnesses, aiming to show that Mubarak and el-Adly – who was in charge of the police – ordered security forces to use deadly force against protesters. STEPHEN HAWKING STILL DEFYING CRIPPLING DISEASE ON HIS 70TH B-DAY CAMBRIDGE, England (Associated Press)
British scientist Stephen Hawking has decoded some of the most puzzling mysteries of the universe but he has left one mystery unsolved: How he has managed to survive so long with such a crippling disease. The physicist and cosmologist was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease when he was a 21-year-old student at Cambridge University. Most people die within a few years of the diagnosis, called motor neurone disease in the U.K. On Sunday, Stephen Hawking Hawking will turn 70. “I don’t know of anyone who’s survived this long,” said Ammar Al-Chalabi, director of the Motor Neurone Disease Care and Research Centre at King’s College London. He does not treat Hawking and described his longevity as “extraordinary.” Hawking first gained attention with his 1988 book A Brief History of Time, a simplified overview of the universe. It sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. His subsequent theories have revolutionized modern understanding of concepts like black holes and the Big Bang theory of how the universe began.

the United States is going to maintain our military superiority,” Obama said. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta and several top military brass lined up on the stage behind him, underscoring Pentagon support for cuts that Panetta and others said they know will be criticized as too drastic. Panetta said that smaller military budgets will mean some tradeoffs and that the U.S. will take on “some level of additional but acceptable risk.” But Panetta said that at this point in history, in a changing world, the Pentagon would have been forced to make a strategy shift anyway.

President Barack Obama yesterday presented a rejiggered Pentagon strategy for absorbing hundreds of billions of dollars in defence budget cuts, saying the U.S. will retain the best-equipped military in American history but with slimmed down forces. The strategy hints at a reduced U.S. military presence in Europe and says Asia will be a bigger priority. It also emphasizes improving U.S. capabilities in the areas of cyberwarfare and missile defence. China is a particular worry because of its economic dynamism and rapid defence buildup. KABUL, Afghanistan (Associated Press)
President Hamid Karzai demanded yesterday that the U.S. detention centre at Bagram Air Base be handed over to Afghan control within a month, along with all Afghan citizens held by the coalition troops across the nation. A presidential statement said that keeping Afghan citizens imprisoned without trial violates the country’s constitution, as well as international human rights conventions. The prison, inside the sprawling U.S. base at Bagram north of Kabul, abuts a well-known public detention centre known as Parwan, which is run jointly by Afghan authorities and the U.S. military. It’s unclear how many high-value detainees are being held at the U.S. facility. Human rights groups have claimed that detainees were menaced, forced to strip naked and kept in solitary confinement in windowless cells. A statement from Karzai’s office said he issued instructions to a commission consisting of the ministers of defence, interior and justice, as well as other top government and judicial officials, “to complete their job regarding the handing over of the (Bagram) prison and other prisoners who are held by foreign forces.”

She’s got a $5 million US recording contract, but Melanie Amaro still sees herself as a nurse someday. The 19-year-old was studying nursing in college before her winning run on Fox’s The X Factor. Although she’s just signed a deal with Epic Records and is about to start working on her debut album, she said she still wants to pursue the ďŹ eld of nursing at some point. “To be honest, I still do want to do nursing because I want to help people,â€? she said. “But I think as of right now I want TRUSTING to pursue what I absolutely love, which HER OWN is my singing ďŹ rst. ... I’ll just probVOICE ably take classes while I’m on the road or something. I don’t know. Whatever comes my way.â€? If her singing career takes off like she did on The X Factor, she’ll likely never get the chance. Amaro won the talent competition last month on the strength of her big voice and ballad-style singing. But Amaro says people shouldn’t expect just slow, anthem-like songs on her debut. “I’ll still have the big ballads, but then I’m hoping to throw something out there that fans won’t expect so they’ll be like, ‘Oh my God, there’s like different stages of her or different like genres that she can do,’â€? she says. “So I can do lots of different types of genres of music and I wasn’t able to show that a lot on the show, but I’ll hopefully be able to do that on the
conďŹ dence. “(He said) trust my voice. ... He always told me like, ‘Girl, you can sing. You can sing. You really can sing.’ He was like, ‘I believe in you,â€?’ she recalled. “Just to hear words like that from L.A. Reid ... that’s really big for me, you know.â€?

Funny man Dan Whitney, the Blue Collar Comedy crew member known as “Larry the Cable Guy, says Louisiana and Alaska are among the states that gave him great fodder for the second season of his History Channel show Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy, which premieres Jan. 11. The show takes quirky and humorous approaches to interesting people and places across the country. Season two opens with Whitney’s venture to the Alaska frontier, where he goes on a stakeout with authorities to catch illegal moose hunters, learns some moose calls and helps one of the state’s top moose scientists. Whitney said he also made an unannounced visit to the home of former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vicepresidential nominee Sarah Palin. “She was a good sport, ARETHA TALKS DREAM WEDDING
MICHELLE OBAMA TO APPEAR ON TEEN TV SHOW ICARLY
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
NEW YORK (Associated Press)
Teen star Miranda Cosgrove says she doesn’t usually get nervous about taping episodes of her Nickelodeon comedy, iCarly, but that changed when Michelle Obama taped an appearance. “I’ve been doing the show for a long time and I usually don’t get nervous, but having the first lady on the set, I was really nervous,” laughed Cosgrove, 18. Nickelodeon and the White House want to show support for U.S. military families with a cameo by the first lady on the show. On iCarly, Cosgrove plays Carly Shay, the daughter of an Air Force colonel who is serving overseas. In an episode titled iMeet the First Lady, Carly gets upset when her father’s return from active duty is cancelled because he is deployed again. Her friends decide to surprise her with a live feed to her father during an iCarly webcast. After Mrs. Obama sees the webcast, she praises Carly for being such a supportive daughter. Cosgrove said that despite being nervous about meeting Mrs. Obama, she found her approachable, calling the first lady a “nice, pretty normal person” who danced during a segment called “Random Dancing.”
Now that the Queen of Soul has found her king, she’s focusing on all the key details of her upcoming nuptials, including the place, the entertainment and, most important, the dress. “You know I am very hands-on. There is no way in the world anyone else could do my wedding other than myself, along with whomever I select to do various things,” she said. Franklin announced in a statement earlier this week that she was engaged to longtime friend Willie Wilkerson. In a phone interview from Atlanta, where her late father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, was to be honoured by the Trumpet Awards for his achievements, Franklin said Wilkerson’s proposal wasn’t entirely unexpected. “We were ... just kind of talking along those lines, and then it got very serious,” she said. “I just said, ‘Is that a proposal?’ and he said ‘yes.’ And that’s how that happened; we just kind of talked into it.” Now Franklin is starting to plan the wedding, including talking to designers Donna Karan and Vera Wang about her dress.
“I’d love to see what they would do custom for me, without me saying anything. They’re known for kick butt (dresses),” she said. She’s also scouting locations for the ceremony, which she estimates will include about 250 people. While she initially considered Miami Beach, Fla., for a June or

Aretha Franklin is leaning towards a June or July wedding.
July wedding, she’s now leaning toward “the exclusive Hamptons” in Long Island, N.Y., where friends have a house with a private beach. “I’m kind of leaning that way because it’s closer to home, and more friends could get there easily,” she said. And who would perform at the wedding of one of pop music’s top legends? Franklin said she hasn’t asked anyone but has her preferences. “I would love to have Smokey (Robinson) sing, my dearest, oldest friend,” she said, adding gospel singer Karen Clark and Stevie Wonder to her list. Franklin has two previous marriages. When asked why she was ready to try a third time at age 69, she said: “I like being married. It’s an institution that I like. So momentarily I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be married.” Franklin also said she’d like to have someone to lean on. “I need taking care of a little more, I think. Let someone else be strong,” she said. Wilkerson was a longtime friend before their relationship became romantic, which is proof, she said, that “sometimes what you’re looking for is already there.”

OTTAWA (Canadian Press)
Canadians appear to be on a collision course with harsh reality when it comes to their increasingly unrealistic expectations for retiring early and comfortably. As evidence mounts of underfunding in company pension plans, and rising household debt, a new survey conducted for TD Bank suggests Canadians haven’t adjusted their notions about retirement. The survey of respondents spanning three generations shows on average Canadians want to retire at 61, and the younger they are, the earlier they want to retire. Those in the 25-30 age group actually expect to call it quits at 59. The problem is that the survey also shows six in 10 Canadians have less than $100,000 in household assets, not counting any equity they may have in their homes. Sixteen per cent have no assets at all.
As well, 44 per cent of respondents reported they will have debt when they retire, and 13 per cent said their debt will be signiďŹ cant. The latest data from Statistics Canada shows Canadians on average owe 153 per cent more than their annual disposable income, a record high, although about 70 per cent is mortgage debt. The TD poll of 1,006 also found that most Canadians expect their retirement years will be a time to relax and enjoy life, with only 15 per cent saying they want to work as long as they are healthy. “Early retirement is only achievable if you take steps needed to get there,â€? said Cynthia Caskey, a portfolio manager with TD Waterhouse. “(But) to ensure their golden years are actually golden, it is extremely important for Canadians to get an early start on saving for retirement.â€?

PORTER, WESTJET ENJOY RECORD TRAFFIC IN 2011 TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Two of Canada’s largest airlines reported some record passenger numbers in December as global economic concerns appeared to have little affect on the quantity of travellers. WestJet, the country’s second-largest airline after Air Canada, said it ew a record 1.4 million passengers in December as the airline reported a load factor of 80.9 per cent, tying its second-highest December load factor ever. Revenue passenger miles increased eight per cent from a year earlier as capacity – measured in available seat miles – grew 7.1 per cent over the same period. Toronto-based Porter, which offers routes in Eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, also reported a strong December. Its load factor for the month was 63.9 per cent, up 1.5 percentage points from December 2010 and a record for the airline.
CANADIAN ECONOMIC FEARS GROW: ECON CLUB TORONTO (Canadian Press)
A growing number of Canadians are more worried about the future of the economy, and how they’ll fare in the midst of what many consider a mild recession, according to a survey released by the Economic Club of Canada. The poll, conducted in December, found that only 25 per cent of respondents say they feel optimistic about the economic prospects in the coming year. That’s down from 36 per cent a year earlier who say they were optimistic, and down even further from the 54 per cent who said they were optimistic in the 2009 survey. The growing pessimism comes as most economists predict Canadian growth this year of less than two per cent, with minimal growth in jobs.

CANADA WINS WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY BRONZE MEDAL CALGARY (Canadian Press)
A depleted Canadian team dug into its reserves to beat Finland 4-0 and capture the bronze medal at the world junior hockey championship yesterday. Down three players due to injuries and a suspension, Canada extended the country’s streak of winning a medal in the tournament to 14 consecutive years. Goaltender Mark Visentin was the feel-good story of the game. He stopped a second-period penalty shot and made a no-look, around-the-back save early in the third. He finished with 27 saves for the shutout. Visentin was in Canada’s goal in last year’s final in Buffalo, N.Y., where Russia scored five third-period goals to win the gold medal. Visentin had finished Canada’s 6-5 semifinal loss to Russia on Tuesday because starter Scott Wedgewood was injured in the second. The Canadians trailed 6-1 early in the third in that game but a spirited comeback fell just short. The short-staffed Canadians needed a big game from their goalie yesterday to get a medal and the Phoenix Coyotes prospect delivered. Visentin was named player of the game for Canada. Quinton Howden scored two goals while Tanner

Three members of the Canadian bobsled team have been hospitalized in Germany after a crash in training yesterday when their sled slammed into the roof of the SLED track, the team’s head coach said. SMASHED The crash took place as the Canadian team was practising for a World Cup event in Altenberg. “I’ve never seen a sled so destroyed in one go in my 32 years in the sport,” said coach Tom de la Hunty. He said pilot Chris Spring of Calgary was taken to the University Clinic in Dresden to have a piece of wood removed from his lower back. Pushman Bill Thomas of Queensville, Ont., was in another hospital in Dresden and Graeme Rinholm of Saskatoon was in a hospital in Pirna, closer to the track. A fourth member of the crew, Tim Randall of Toronto, was not injured. Bobsleigh Canada chief executive officer Don Wilson said Thomas was essentially “battered and bruised” and resting comfortably in hospital while Rinholm had lacerations to his upper leg and buttocks area. Describing the crash he called “disastrous,” de la Hunty said it took place in corner 16 of the track, often described as one of the most difficult in the world. “He (Spring) must have made a mistake,” de la Hunty said. The sled, travelling at about 130 kilometres per hour, hit the wooden roof over the course and came crashing back down. It never left the track and came to a stop about 10 metres from the spot where Spring lost control, he said.
TORONTO (Canadian Press)
Jonas Gustavsson can count on getting another start for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The man known as The Monster stopped all 24 shots he faced last night for his second career NHL shutout as the Maple Leafs beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-0. With the Leafs facing a key stretch of schedule, coach Ron Wilson says the goaltender that wins will stay in net for the following game. Gustavsson was barely used during a mediocre 4-6-3 December as Wilson elected to ride James Reimer following his return from a head injury. But the backup now has consecutive victories to open an important homestand and should be back in net on Saturday when the Detroit Red Wings come to town. Phil Kessel, Tim Connolly, Mikhail Grabovski, Clarke MacArthur scored for the Maple Leafs (20-15-5), who moved into seventh in the Eastern Conference. The Jets saw their record fall to 19-16-5 and dropped below Toronto in the standings. Gustavsson’s only previous NHL shutout came as a rookie in December 2009, when he stopped 25 shots in a victory over Boston. He had made 65 appearances since then. The Swede faced a few tense moments in the third period before closing this one out, losing his trapper briefly during one sequence and standing tall on a late Jets power play.

Pearson and Mark Scheifele had the others before 18,595 spectators, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Finland’s Sami Aittokallio stopped 40 shots. Canada was down to 19 players for the game. Defenceman Scott Harrington did not play. He suffered an “upper-body” injury in a game against the U.S. on Saturday, but played in Tuesday’s semifinal. Forward Boone Jenner, the tournament leader in faceoffs won, was serving a onegame suspension for spearing Russian captain Evgeni Kuznetsov in the semifinal. Winger Devante Smith-Pelly broke his foot blocking a shot in the first game of the tournament. Canada had played in the tournament final every year for the previous decade and had won five gold in that span. The Canadians were playing for bronze for the first time since winning it in Russia in 2001. Finland was coming off its own heart-breaking game, falling 3-2 in a shootout to Sweden in their semifinal after leading for almost three periods. Sweden beat Russia 1-0 in overtime to win the gold medal. It was the country’s first title since 1981 and just their second in the history of the tournament. Ottawa Senators prospect Mika Zinbanejad scored the overtime winner at 10:09.

Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters advanced to the semifinals of the Brisbane International with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Iveta Benesova yesterday. Clijsters won the Brisbane title in 2010 and, after missing the 2011 edition, now has an 8-0 record in the Australian Open tuneup. She raced to a 5-0 lead before
NHL | Daniel Alfredsson, Milan Michalek, Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson will start during the NHL’s all-star game on Jan. 29, Benesova, who ousted Samantha Stosur in the second round, launched a comeback with a run of three straight games. Benesova held her opening serve and had an early break-point chance in the second set before Clijsters shifted up a gear and dominated the remainder of the match to earn a semifinal meeting against Daniela Hantuchova, Kim Clijsters who got a walkover in the quarterfinals when 13-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament on Wednesday after injuring her ankle.

Clijsters had a tough three-set win over Ana Ivanovic in the second round, but didn’t let Benesova get too close in the quarterfinals. “I’m very satisfied with the way that I played,” Clijsters said. “In my previous match I lost my focus a bit. I was really focussed on not letting that happen today.” Francesca Schiavone will meet Kaia Kanepi in the other women’s semifinal. Schiavone saved two match points before coming back for a 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-3 win over Jelena Jankovic.

Germany’s president and its biggest-selling newspaper traded blows yesterday on whether he tried to prevent it from publishing a report on a controversial private loan, adding to the embattled head of state’s troubles. President Christian Wulff has faced intense pressure to explain himself since it emerged that he left an angry message Dec. 12 on the voicemail of Bild newspaper’s editorin-chief Kai Diekmann the day before the story appeared. Wulff insisted in a television interview Wednesday that he hadn’t tried to block the report and had merely asked for it to be delayed a day so that “we could talk about it, so that it could be correct.” But Diekmann expressed “astonishment” about that in a letter yesterday to Wulff. He wrote that Bild had already agreed to a one-day delay on Dec. 11, and that Wulff’s spokesman – who the president fired just before Christmas without giving reasons – provided and then retracted responses before Wulff called Diekmann. Bild reported Dec. 13 that Wulff received a 500,000 euro ($650,000) private loan from the wife of a wealthy businessman and friend, apparently at below market rates, in 2008. He used the money to buy a house.

Assad agreed to the Arab peace plan on Dec. 19, but the Arab League has acknowledged that its plan has failed to stop violence. Activists have reported nearly 400 deaths since the monitors began work last week. The Local Coordination Committees, an opposition group that tracks deaths in Syria, said up to 20 people were killed in violence yesterday.
MONITORS IN SYRIA HAVE MADE ‘MISTAKES’: QATARI PM Arab League sanctions against Damascus. About 100 Arab League observers are in Syria to assess whether President Bashar Assad’s regime is abiding by an Arab peace plan that requires the government to remove security forces and heavy weapons from cities, start talks with opposition leaders and free political prisoners. The League claims it has won some conces-

Qatar’s prime minister said Wednesday the Arab League observer mission in Syria has made “some mistakes” and he was turning to the United Nations for help. Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad bin Jassem Al Thani discussed the month-long mission with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York amid mounting criticism that the observers are simply giving the Syrian regime cover for its ongoing crackdown on a nearly 10-month-old uprising. “We are coming here for technical help and to see the experience the UN has, because this is the first time the Arab League is involved in sending monitors, and there are some mistakes,” he said, according to Kuwait’s state news agency. Asked what kind of mistakes, he replied: “This is the first experience for us. I said we have to evaluate what sorts of mistakes we have (made). There is no doubt for me. I can see there are mistakes, but we went there not to stop the killing, but to monitor.” The Arab Gulf nation of Qatar has been at the forefront of criticism of Syria and has pushed for
