The highest profile suspect in a local dial-a-dopeand-gun investigation linked to the foster son of Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has been taken into custody. Richmond’s Jinagh Navas-Rivas, 21, who lived with the Robertson family for two years until 2009, was taken into custody yesterday around 2 p.m, a day after Raymond Ma turned himself in to the RCMP. RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said investigators located Navas-Rivas, and opened a line of communication with him, after which a location was selected for him to surrender himself. He remains in custody. At virtually the same time, Vinh Hoang David Le turned himself in to the Vancouver Sherrifs Department. Le also remains in custody. As first revealed by The Richmond Review, NavasRivas was named as part of an 18-count criminal indictment on Dec. 23. In an investigation launched last June by the Richmond drug squad, police seized a quantity of cocaine, ecstasy and steroids, along with weapons. Navas-Rivas is charged with transferring a firearm and two counts of cocaine trafficking. After learning of the RCMP investigation on Dec. 29, Gregor Robertson issued a statement asking that Navas-Rivas turn himself in.

Longtime friends Missy Schalin and Sean Annan believe Enderby Fire Department Captain Dan Botkin didn’t die a hero. He was born one. The pair eulogized Botkin, 25, killed Dec. 29 on-duty in a fire and explosion at Sperlich Log Constructon, during Botkin’s public funeral yesterday at the Enderby Arena, which included more than 1,000 firefighters and emergency services personnel from across Canada. “He was Dan-tastic, as he would say, and for those of us who were blessed to know him couldn’t agree more,” said Schalin. “All of his friends and family vote him as an amazing person, husband, son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, touching each of us in such a unique way, teaching us it’s not the years in your life but the life in your years.” The uniformed firefighters and emergency personnel, which included RCMP in red serge, Search and Rescue, paramedics and volunteers, formed an honour guard at the Enderby Chamber of Commerce, and marched through the streets of Enderby under a mix of blue and grey skies, with a hint of sunshine, to the arena. The guard also included more than 30

fire trucks from various departments on hand for the funeral. Enderby Fire Chief Kevin Alstad escorted Botkin’s wife Miranda – the newlyweds married Oct. 29 – to her seat at the front of the stage which was adorned with her husband’s fire jacket and pictures of Botkin. “I have never heard Dan say one bad word about anybody,” said Alstad. “He was a solid, reliable person one could trust with his own life.”

While Alstad, Schalin and Annan eulogized their friend and colleague, a number of dignitaries were present to express their condolences. Among them were Enderby Mayor Howie Cyr, B.C. Fire Commissioner Rebecca Denlinger, Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster and, representing the Queen, B.C. Lt.-Gov. Steven Point. Botkin was laid to rest in the Enderby Cemetery.

POLL: ENBRIDGE PIPELINE HAS 48% SUPPORT IN B.C. VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Nearly half of British Columbians support Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway project, which would pass through the province, according to an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of the pipeline company. The survey, released yesterday, suggests 48 per cent of B.C. residents back the controversial $5.5-billion project – 14 per cent of those strongly. On the flip side, 32 per cent oppose it – 13 per cent strongly. Northern Gateway would carry some 525,000 barrels per day of Alberta crude to the West Coast for export to Asian countries. A much smaller parallel line would bring diluent – used to make oilsands bitumen thin enough to flow through pipelines – from the coast to Alberta. Regulatory hearings into Northern Gateway begin next week in Kitimat and the process is expected to take about two years, with more than 4,000 people set to speak. There has been vocal opposition to the project from First Nations, environmental and other groups, though Thursday’s poll suggests that sentiment may not be as widespread as has been thought. ForestEthics, one of the most vehement critics of Northern Gateway, quickly dismissed the Ipsos Reid poll as “bogus,” citing an independent survey by Forum Research last month that found half of Canadians oppose the project.

A group of thieves absconded with 770 metres of underground copper from near the Westhills development in Langford, likely some time in the past month. After receiving a call from a resident about an above-ground power box sitting in a strange position on Wednesday, a BC Hydro crew discovered copper wire, thick as a thumb and weighing about 5,000 pounds in total, was missing. West Shore RCMP said the thieves entered underground service tunnels through manhole covers and removed the wire.

George Yeast, 78, who owned Norco Septic Service until 2000, was terminally ill from cancer when he passed away, said his son Douglas. “He was really sick and we think the people that broke into the house while he was dead, we think they were watching him,”said Douglas. While his body lay there on the bed, the thieves rifled through his pants pockets – the pants were on the side of the bed. The Federal Court of Canada has overturned a 2010 band council election in the Labrador Innu community of Natuashish and ordered a new vote. Justice Donald Rennie says there were major problems with the way the original vote was held. The problems include short notice of the vote, a lack of control of the number of ballots printed, uncertainty about custody of the ballot boxes and a large number of spoiled ballots. An 84-year-old American sailor found alive in the remote South Pacific told his rescuers his mast was so badly cracked that he couldn’t raise his sails without snapping it in two, Chile’s navy said yesterday. Corogin, a lawyer from Port Clinton, Ohio, was apparently frustrated at having to give up on his seventh attempt to sail alone around the tip of South America, one of sailing’s most difficult feats.

When it comes to stating its case internationally, Israel is tired of playing it straight: It is recruiting gays and lesbians as unofficial envoys. In a bid to boost its international image, the country’s ministry of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs has established a cadre of diverse volunteers who speak about Israel around the world. In a recent post on its website, the ministry encouraged minorities and members of the gay community to step forward. Ministry spokesman Gal Ilan said yesterday that the goal was to highlight Israel’s diversity.

Russia’s top election official has shrugged off protesters’ calls for him to step down over alleged fraud during last month’s parliamentary ballot. A chunk of the Titanic’s hull is among 5,000 salvaged artifacts from the world’s most famous shipwreck that will be auctioned in New York in April. The sale of the Titanic collection will nearly coincide with the 100th anniversary of the 1912 sinking of the ocean liner, which hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Guernsey’s auction house president Arlan Ettinger says this is its most significant auction planned. Items include a 17-ton section of the Titanic’s hull and the stand the ship’s wheel stood on. The collection was appraised in 2007 at $189 million.

An independent panel of experts in the U.K. says there is a strong case for changing British law to help terminally ill people die. In a report yesterday, the Commission for Assisted Dying described the legal status of assisted suicide in Britain as “inadequate and incoherent.” The commission said it would be possible to legally allow assisted suicide for terminally ill people under strict criteria: those who were at least 18 years old and who were making a voluntary choice free from coercion or mental health problems.

Although she’s just signed a deal with Epic Records and is about to start working on her debut album, she said she still wants to pursue the ďŹ eld of nursing at some point. “To be honest, I still do want to do nursing because I want to help people,â€? she said. “But I think as of right now I want TRUSTING to pursue what I absolutely love, which HER OWN is my singing ďŹ rst. ... Teen star Miranda Cosgrove says she doesn’t usually get nervous about taping episodes of her Nickelodeon comedy, iCarly, but that changed when Michelle Obama taped an appearance. “I’ve been doing the show for a long time and I usually don’t get nervous, but having the first lady on the set, I was really nervous,” laughed Cosgrove, 18. Nickelodeon and the White House want to show support for U.S. military families with a cameo by the first lady on the show. On iCarly, Cosgrove plays Carly Shay, the daughter of an Air Force colonel who is serving overseas. In an episode titled iMeet the First Lady, Carly gets upset when her father’s return from active duty is cancelled because he is deployed again. Her friends decide to surprise her with a live feed to her father during an iCarly webcast. After Mrs. Obama sees the webcast, she praises Carly for being such a supportive daughter. Cosgrove said that despite being nervous about meeting Mrs. Obama, she found her approachable, calling the first lady a “nice, pretty normal person” who danced during a segment called “Random Dancing.”

Now that the Queen of Soul has found her king, she’s focusing on all the key details of her upcoming nuptials, including the place, the entertainment and, most important, the dress. “You know I am very hands-on. There is no way in the world anyone else could do my wedding other than myself, along with whomever I select to do various things,” she said. Franklin announced in a statement earlier this week that she was engaged to longtime friend Willie Wilkerson. In a phone interview from Atlanta, where her late father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, was to be honoured by the Trumpet Awards for his achievements, Franklin said Wilkerson’s proposal wasn’t entirely unexpected. “We were ... just kind of talking along those lines, and then it got very serious,” she said. “I just said, ‘Is that a proposal?’ and he said ‘yes.’ And that’s how that happened; we just kind of talked into it.” Now Franklin is starting to plan the wedding, including talking to designers Donna Karan and Vera Wang about her dress.

Canadians appear to be on a collision course with harsh reality when it comes to their increasingly unrealistic expectations for retiring early and comfortably. As evidence mounts of underfunding in company pension plans, and rising household debt, a new survey conducted for TD Bank suggests Canadians haven’t adjusted their notions about retirement. The survey of respondents spanning three generations shows on average Canadians want to retire at 61, and the younger they are, the earlier they want to retire. Those in the 25-30 age group actually expect to call it quits at 59. The problem is that the survey also shows six in 10 Canadians have less than $100,000 in household assets, not counting any equity they may have in their homes. Sixteen per cent have no assets at all.

As well, 44 per cent of respondents reported they will have debt when they retire, and 13 per cent said their debt will be signiďŹ cant. The latest data from Statistics Canada shows Canadians on average owe 153 per cent more than their annual disposable income, a record high, although about 70 per cent is mortgage debt. The TD poll of 1,006 also found that most Canadians expect their retirement years will be a time to relax and enjoy life, with only 15 per cent saying they want to work as long as they are healthy. “Early retirement is only achievable if you take steps needed to get there,â€? said Cynthia Caskey, a portfolio manager with TD Waterhouse. “(But) to ensure their golden years are actually golden, it is extremely important for Canadians to get an early start on saving for retirement.â€?

Revenue passenger miles increased eight per cent from a year earlier as capacity – measured in available seat miles – grew 7.1 per cent over the same period. Toronto-based Porter, which offers routes in Eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, also reported a strong December. Its load factor for the month was 63.9 per cent, up 1.5 percentage points from December 2010 and a record for the airline.

A growing number of Canadians are more worried about the future of the economy, and how they’ll fare in the midst of what many consider a mild recession, according to a survey released by the Economic Club of Canada. The poll, conducted in December, found that only 25 per cent of respondents say they feel optimistic about the economic prospects in the coming year. That’s down from 36 per cent a year earlier who say they were optimistic, and down even further from the 54 per cent who said they were optimistic in the 2009 survey. The growing pessimism comes as most economists predict Canadian growth this year of less than two per cent, with minimal growth in jobs.

Three members of the Canadian bobsled team have been hospitalized in Germany after a crash in training yesterday when their sled slammed into the roof of the SLED track, the team’s head coach said. SMASHED The crash took place as the Canadian team was practising for a World Cup event in Altenberg. “I’ve never seen a sled so destroyed in one go in my 32 years in the sport,” said coach Tom de la Hunty. He said pilot Chris Spring of Calgary was taken to the University Clinic in Dresden to have a piece of wood removed from his lower back. Pushman Bill Thomas of Queensville, Ont., was in another hospital in Dresden and Graeme Rinholm of Saskatoon was in a hospital in Pirna, closer to the track. A fourth member of the crew, Tim Randall of Toronto, was not injured. Bobsleigh Canada chief executive officer Don Wilson said Thomas was essentially “battered and bruised” and resting comfortably in hospital while Rinholm had lacerations to his upper leg and buttocks area. Describing the crash he called “disastrous,” de la Hunty said it took place in corner 16 of the track, often described as one of the most difficult in the world. “He (Spring) must have made a mistake,” de la Hunty said. The sled, travelling at about 130 kilometres per hour, hit the wooden roof over the course and came crashing back down. It never left the track and came to a stop about 10 metres from the spot where Spring lost control, he said.

Jonas Gustavsson can count on getting another start for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The man known as The Monster stopped all 24 shots he faced last night for his second career NHL shutout as the Maple Leafs beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-0. With the Leafs facing a key stretch of schedule, coach Ron Wilson says the goaltender that wins will stay in net for the following game. Gustavsson was barely used during a mediocre 4-6-3 December as Wilson elected to ride James Reimer following his return from a head injury. But the backup now has consecutive victories to open an important homestand and should be back in net on Saturday when the Detroit Red Wings come to town. Phil Kessel, Tim Connolly, Mikhail Grabovski, Clarke MacArthur scored for the Maple Leafs (20-15-5), who moved into seventh in the Eastern Conference. The Jets saw their record fall to 19-16-5 and dropped below Toronto in the standings. Gustavsson’s only previous NHL shutout came as a rookie in December 2009, when he stopped 25 shots in a victory over Boston. He had made 65 appearances since then. The Swede faced a few tense moments in the third period before closing this one out, losing his trapper briefly during one sequence and standing tall on a late Jets power play.

He wrote that Bild had already agreed to a one-day delay on Dec. 11, and that Wulff’s spokesman – who the president fired just before Christmas without giving reasons – provided and then retracted responses before Wulff called Diekmann. Bild reported Dec. 13 that Wulff received a 500,000 euro ($650,000) private loan from the wife of a wealthy businessman and friend, apparently at below market rates, in 2008.
