Thieves robbed a Terrace residence while the homeowner lay deceased inside late last month. The man’s son went to check on his father at his residence on Old Lakelse Lake Dr. on the morning of Dec. 30, discovered that someone had broken into the home, and then he found his father deceased, police said. “It is likely that it was known the man was deceased while the home was went through,” Terrace RCMP spokesperson Const. Angela Rabut said. After a thorough investigation involving the Terrace RCMP Forensic Identification Unit, Terrace RCMP, and the provincial coroner, it is determined that foul play was not involved, said Rabut. The death of the terminally ill 78-year-old man and the break and enter are not related, she added. Stolen were a black and white Mastercraft air compressor with an orange hose attached to it, two red plastic 20 L Jerry cans – one marked “STRAIT GAS”, and an orange gas powered weed whacker. Police continue to investigate the break and enter. Metro police laid 399 impaired driving charges over the holidays, up from 308 over the same period in 2010.

Despite B.C.’s tougher drunk driving laws, police in Metro Vancouver say they stopped more impaired drivers over the last two months compared to a year ago. Police say from Nov. 1 to Jan. 2 they laid 399 charges, up from 308 during the same period in 2010. The drunk driving law was challenged in court and a judge ruled parts of it unconstitutional, but has given the government six months to fix the law.
RCMP Superintendent Norm Gaumont says the number of impaired charges may have gone up because some people were confused by the court ruling and believed they wouldn’t be charged if they refused to blow into a breathalyzer. “We’re not backing off,” Gaumont said. “I wonder if people were confused about the Supreme Court decision and what it meant. To set the record straight – refusing to blow remains a Criminal Code offense.” He points out that officers also charged 63 people for refusing to blow from Nov. 1 to Jan. 2, compared to 37 last year. RCMP officers also handed out 332 three-day suspensions from Nov. 1 to Jan. 2, compared to 240 last year during the same time frame.

he Internet is like the world’s largest mall, says Merlyn Horton, where many products and experiences can be found all in one place. For a long time, parents have dropped their kids off at the mall entrance, advising them to be careful, and then leaving them unsupervised. But Horton, founder and executive director for Safe Online Outreach Society (SOLOS), maintains parents should be active participants in their children’s online activities, engaging
them in conversation about online culture and communication as early as Grade 1. “As soon as they know how to use a mouse, parents should be teaching their children what a powerful piece of equipment (the Internet) is.” Horton adds that children and teenagers cannot be blamed for misconduct on the Internet if there have been no ground rules or precautions. “It’s a whole new level of society that if parents are not present in, the youth have to navigate on their own.” In the early 2000s, danger involving the Internet was largely predator-focused. Law enforcement and parents were concerned with those who might seek out their children and teenagers online. Horton says that risk has now shifted, in that the
concern should be with how young people are conducting themselves online. Since the advent of Facebook and YouTube, and with the increasing popularity of smart phones, teens are using the technology in their pockets to socialize, construct their identity, and experiment with their sexuality. The three most common issues parents now bring up when talking with Horton are potential gaming addiction, the discovery of sexual content their children have sent to peers or received from others, and online harassment. When SOLOS was first created in 2000, collaboration with corporate businesses and the society was low. A
young Guatemalan family new to Abbotsford has found confidence and a sense of community after working with a local volunteer. Marvin Interiano, 27, and his partner Estela Reyes, 28, were paired with a volunteer from the Host Program run by Abbotsford Community Services soon after their arrival a year and a half ago. The Host Program offers a one-on-one matching program for immigrant and refugee newcomers to the community. Following a screening process, which includes an interview and criminal record check, volunteers are paired with families based on similar interests and their age. They generally spend an hour or two together each week doing different activities.

She also talks to her two young sons in English. “Kathleen has been a nice teacher and a nice friend.” When Kathleen started with the Host Program, she was recruiting volunteers at Columbia Bible College. The process influenced her to put her own name forward. The application process saw Kathleen go through a criminal record check, describe her interests, and do a two-hour training session where she learned about sensitivity to culture and cultural differences. “I really enjoy the volunteer process because you make a friend and become a part of a new family,” said Kathleen. “It’s in you already to do. It doesn’t take any extra learning to become a friend with someone.”
